With “Melophobia” earning them a Grammy Award nomination in 2015 for Best Alternative Music Album and “Tell me I’m Pretty” winning the award for Best Rock Album at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, Cage the Elephant has been able to sustain their success with more than 5 million listeners monthly. I remember vividly 2013 USA swimming nationals, it was before my 100 fly event and I was trying to get myself pumped up. My brother was next to me bobbing his head for his next race when I ask him “Can I listen?” so he gives me his Ipod and headphones and tells me to brace myself and starts playing “In one ear”. This was very different to the music I was used to, from Kesha, Britney Spears and Justin Bieber to Cage the Elephant. For the first time in my life I was introduced to a whole new world and I was loving it. From then on Cage the Elephant became my go to band, and it would Halo by Cage the later dictate the music I would listen to in the future. Elephant What is the best thing about Cage the Elephant? MN speaking The best thing about cage the elephant is how different their music is. Cage the Elephant will always have a song that speaks to my mood, and that’s the best thing about them. I don’t have to look any further than them. CG speaking Is there a song that speaks to you the most? VD speaking Yeah it’s actually my favorite song from them, it’s Cigarette Daydreams. I love that song so much. There is this part in the song that says “You were only seventeen. So sweet with a mean streak” and honestly just that part of the song was why I was so excited to turn seventeen. MN speaking I think my favorite song is “Shake me down” because there is this part in the song that says “Taste the blood, broken dreams, lonely times in deed” and as a artist I’ve seen this first hand for a lot of my peers and it just really speaks to me. CG speaking How has their music affected you? MN speaking As an artist when I try feeling inspired, or I’m looking for a vibe, I will often

look at Cage the Elephant songs because they really execute their vibes really well so yeah, I would say their music has affected me. Cage the Elephant lead singer “Matt Shultz” came from a poor background and was sometimes teased for this, with him and his brother being called "Poor Boys" by other kids at their school. A lot of their music speaks about economic difficulties, as well as other major topics the 21st century speaks about such as sexual orientation, abusive relationships, social injustice, drug and alcohol abuse, and rebellion. And what teenager doesn’t like a little bit of rebellion? Would you say Cage the Elephant changed the 21st century music? I would definitely say that. I think they paved the way for a lot of other indie bands like Catfish and the Bottlemen, Atlas Genius, Tama Paula, I think they made it like mainstream music, and they made it like common and I don’t know I just feel like they helped so many other artist become big and get known. There you have it folks, I think we can officially say that Cage the Elephant has been a representative of the 21st century music and will continue to do so. Lets give a round of applause to our interviewees VD and MN. Make sure to check out GCE’s radio station and continue to cage! Until next time! *End*
