DISNAR PER LA STORICA /A dinner for the Historical Regatta Un comitato di cittadini vuole riavvicinare il pubblico alla Regata Storica. La redazione intervista Saverio Pastor del comitato "Disnar per la storica" uno che di voga se ne intende e che da oltre 40 anni a Venezia fa il “remér”, l'artigiano specializzato nel realizzare forcol e e remi per la voga alla veneta /A committee of citizens has thought up an initiative that would bring the public closer to the world of the regattas, Our staff did an interview with Saverio Pastor, one of the committee responsible, someone who knows a great deal about rowing as he has been a “remér” in Venice for over 40 years, an artisan specialised in producing forcole3 and oars for Venetian-style rowing.

a sera del 26 agosto, in una ventina di punti diversi della città prederanno vita grandi tavolate autoorganizzate, predispote da società remiere ed associazioni locali e rivolte ai propri concittadini.

Le tavolate saranno libere e gratuite e si svolgeranno proprio una settimana prima della Regata Storica. L'iniziativa prende non a caso il nome di Disnàr per la Storica. Un comitato di cittadini ha pensato a un'iniziativa che contribuisse a riavvicinare il pubblico al mondo delle regate, la cui stagione culmina proprio con la Regata storica, la prima domenica di settembre.

Saverio come mai avete pensato di organizzare questi disnàri?

Abbiamo visto che la gente ha voglia di socialità e le feste di sestiere4 funzionano per questo: c’è voglia di stare assieme, di trovarsi e mangiare in compagnia; ci siamo quindi chiesti se si poteva organizza-

re qualcosa di questo tipo finalizzandolo alla promozione della Regata Storica.

La Regata Storica ha quindi bisogno di promozione?

Assisto alla storica dai primi anni '70. Erano gli anni di regatanti entrati nel mito della voga: gli Strigheta, i Ciaci, i Fungher e i Crea. E poi dei Vignotto, dei D’Este, dei Redolfi.

Ognuno di questi nomi corrisponde ad un viso, ad una persona ma ne parlo al plurale perché ognuno di quei nomi identifica una famiglia, una stirpe ma anche un nugolo di tifosi e di sostenitori, di persone che amavano seguirli nelle loro avventure sportive. Quel mondo animava il Canal Grande che si riempiva all’inverosimile, zeppo di barche di ogni fatta, dimensione e colore. Era una giornata attesa tutto l’anno: era la festa della voga, del mondo del remo, di Venezia.

Ne parli al passato: non è più così?

Infatti: ci si trovava al mattino di buon’ora per arrivare, a remi, in

n the evening of 26 August, in about twenty different locations in the city, a series of get-togethers will be organised by local rowing societies and associations, designed to encourage their fellow citizens to participate.

Anyone can take part in these social events, which will also be free of charge, and will take place precisely one week before the Historical Regatta. And indeed, the event is named DisnĂ r per la Storica.

A committee of citizens has thought up an initiative that would bring the public closer to the world of the regattas, the season of which culminates with the Historical Regatta, on the first Sunday in September.

Saverio what made you decide to organise these disnĂ ri?

We saw that people wanted to socialise and local parties tend to work for this very reason: people want to get together, to gather and eat in the company of others; so we wondered ( venezia ) MAGAZINE

whether we could organise an event like this that would also promote the Historical Regatta.

Does this mean that you think the Historical Regatta needs to be promoted?

I have been attending the Historical Regatta since the early 1970s. In those years, its competitors went down in the rowing history books: the Strigheta, the Ciaci, the Fongher and the Crea. And then we also had the Vignotto, the D’Este and the Redolfi.

Each of these names corresponds to a face, to a person, but I talk about them in the plural because each one not only identifies a family, a bloodline, but also a whole host of fans and supporters, of people who loved to follow them in their sporting adventures.

That was the world that animated the Grand Canal, filling it unbelievably full of boats of every kind, size and colour.

It was the event everyone waited for all year long, a

Quali erano i momenti più intensi e partecipati di questa giornata?

Il finale ad esempio: visti passare i nostri eroi, si mollavano gli ormeggi per immergersi in un mare di barche impazzite, ognuna con direzioni diverse, spesso bloccate da veri e propri ingorghi e dai cordini tesi a protezione della zona della Machina.

Ma come fare per riportare la gente in Canal Grande?

Ci ho pensato per tre anni senza trovare persone che mi

wonderful day of celebration: it was the celebration of rowing, of the world of rowing, of Venice itself.

You are speaking in the past tense: is this no longer how it is?

Indeed: we would get together early in the morning and then row to the Grand Canal where we would try and find a good position before the pageant left, armed with lots of food and drink. In the end, the Canal would calm down, becoming flat, smooth, perfect; anyone who tried to upset the balances by diving in to the water or leaving their moorings would be knocked over by the water jets sprayed by the ever-alert firemen. The pageants played a political and social role – and also contained an element of criticism directed at the authorities. Over the years, it also underwent a series of significant changes: passing from vociferous groups of rowing boats to motor boats, with smoke that would fog and “perfume” the air, before finally achieving the calm that has reigned for the past few years now.

So would you say that the event has remained the same, but you note that fewer people are taking part in it?

Over the last few years the event has lost its edge and the number of spectators attending continues to fall. The decline in attendance appears to be uncontainable and dramatic.

It is unthinkable that we could lose such an event, and the emotions that accompany it. It is simply unthinkable that we

Quindici realtà tra città, estuario e isole hanno risposto con entusiasmo al nostro appello dando la disponibilità e l’adesione al progetto. Per partecipare basterà portarsi il proprio cibo e una bevanda che, volendo, si potrà condividere col vicino di tavola.

Can you tell us about the most intense moments of this day?

The ones that drew the biggest crowds?

The final, for instance: once we had seen our heroes go past, we would leave our moorings to plunge into a sea of boats gone mad, each with a different direction, often blocked by real traffic jams and by the lanyards rigged up to protect the Machina5 area.

But what can be done to bring the crowds back to the Grand Canal?

I thought about this for three years without finding anyone who could help me resolve certain doubts and problems.

Then, in 2015, I found the right friends to help me face this challenge. With this event we

would like to arrange for many of us to return to the banks of the Grand Canal to watch the Historical Regatta from the boats.

How will this evening work?

Fifteen locations, including mainland and islands have responded with enthusiasm to our appeal, confirming their availability and their willingness to participate in the project. To participate, simply bring your own food and a drink which, if you like, you can share it with the others at your table.

L

a storia del sistema difensivo della laguna di Venezia ha inizio con le opere difensive costruite alle bocche di porto nel XVI secolo dalla Repubblica di San Marco, per proseguire, solo dopo tre secoli, con i forti costieri dei litorali di Lido e di Pellestrina realizzati dagli austriaci durante la loro seconda dominazione (1814-1866). Gli austriaci, inoltre, continuarono nella trasformazione della destinazione d’uso di molte isole della laguna di Venezia da conventuali a militari (processo avviato dai francesi con le soppressioni napoleoniche) finché, con l’annessione del Lombardo-Veneto al Regno d’Italia, l’esercito sabaudo decise di fortificare pesantemente anche la terraferma mediante l’edificazione del Campo Trincerato di Mestre; edificazione che, nel Nove-

cento, fu coeva anche del progressivo riammodernamento delle difese costiere in previsione della Grande Guerra.

Questo immenso patrimonio, per vastità geografica (interessa tutta la laguna e l’entroterra, da Cavallino a Chioggia, da Malamocco a Zelarino) e varietà temporale (dal XVI secolo alla Grande Guerra) rappresenta una delle più importanti aree strategiche mondiali, è destinato a diventare - assieme agli altri forti edificati dalla Serenissima nel bacino del Mediterraneo - un sito del Patrimonio Mondiale UNESCO denominato Le opere di difesa veneziane tra XV e XVII secolo, e costituisce il più importante patrimonio culturale di proprietà della Città di Venezia dopo i Musei Civici.

he defensive system of the Venice lagoon began to take shape with the defensive works built at its inlets in the sixteenth century by the Republic of San Marco and was reinforced, after three centuries, with coastal forts at Lido and Pellestrina constructed by the Austrians during their second rule (18141866). The Austrians also continued the transformation of the many islands of the Venice lagoon from convent to military use (a process initiated by the French under the Napoleonic suppression) until, with the annexation of Lombardy and Veneto to the Kingdom of Italy, the Savoy army decided to also heavily fortify the mainland with the building of the Campo Trincerato at Mestre; construction that, in twentieth-century, occurred at the same time as ( venezia ) MAGAZINE

the progressive modernization of coastal defences in anticipation of the Great War. This immense estate, for its geographical vastness (affecting the entire lagoon and the hinterland, from Cavallino to Chioggia, from Malamocco to Zelarino) and temporal variety (from the sixteenth century to the Great War) is one of the world's most important strategic areas and is destined to become (along with other forts built by the Venetian Republic in the Mediterranean basin), a UNESCO World Heritage site known as The works of Venetian defences between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries and,

after the acquisitions made by the City of Venice in the early twenty-first century, constitutes the most important cultural asset owned by the City of Venice after the Civic Museums.

re, e che il grande ingegnere capo del Comune di Venezia, Eugenio Miozzi, volle costruirvi all’interno il Casinò e il Palazzo del Cinema per non avere spese di esproprio?

E’ proprio così. La cittadella dell’intrattenimento del Lido era il gigantesco Forte Quattro Fontane, e oggi ne rimangono molte tracce: prime fra tutte le fattezze del Casinò, che è stato costruito sopra il blockhaus austriaco e ne mantiene la forma; poi, il vero e proprio “forte a mare”, tuttora esistente e perfettamente conservato sotto il piazzale antistante.

Per chi ne volesse sapere di più, se ne dibatterà in una conferenza organizzata dall’Istituto Italiano dei Castelli il giorno dopo l’inaugurazione della Mostra del Cinema, venerdì 9 settembre alle ore 17, presso l’Hotel Quattro Fontane al Lido (www.facebook.com/istitutocastelli.veneto).

Domenica 4 settembre sarà aperto tutto il giorno il Forte Gazzera e il suo Museo delle attività umane tradizionali dell’entroterra veneziano, con la possibilità di effettuare picnic previa prenotazione (it-it.facebook.com/Forte-Gazzera163936473660289/).

A proposito di manicaretti, il Forte Bazzera a Tessera ospiterà dal 9 al 20 settembre la tradizionale Sagra dea Sbrisa, il fungo di ceppaia. In un contesto paesaggistico unico, si potrà gustare il delizioso fungo e altre specialità culinarie immersi nella laguna di Venezia, ma con il vantaggio di poterla raggiungere dalla terraferma in

Conclude il mese l’iniziativa a Forte Carpenedo, in via Vallon a Mestre (www.fortecarpenedo.it), dove sabato 24 e domenica 25 settembre ci sarà una splendida rievocazione storica della Prima Guerra Mondiale, con visite guidate, esposizione di divise e allestimenti militari d’epoca, a cura delle Sentinelle del Lagazuoi. On Saturday, September 17th Forte San Felice in Chioggia will be open as part of the European Heritage Days event, with guided tours available upon reservation from 3pm to 6pm (www.comitatofortesanfelice.it). The month will conclude with an initiative at Forte Carpenedo, in via Vallon in Mestre (www.fortecarpenedo.it), where on Saturday, September 24th and Sunday, September 25th there will be a splendid historical commemoration of the First World War, with guided tours and exhibitions of the military uniforms and equipment of the time, curated by the Sentinels of Lagazuoi.

IN GIARDINO PER STAR BENE /Being in the garden makes you feel healthy

Quando natura e bellezza generano benessere. /When nature and beauty create wellbeing.

L

o sapevano gli antichi e tutti noi l'abbiamo verificato: immergersi nella natura, passeggiare in un giardino o coltivare delle piante sono attività che possono migliorare l'umore e ridurre lo stress. Un positivo ruolo rigenerante e terapeutico confermato da studi scientifici condotti a partire dagli anni ottanta: ma non solo perché la garden therapy può decisamente migliorare la qualità di una degenza in ospedale e favorire i processi fisici di guarigione, stimolando la sensazione di benessere, concorrendo a potenziare le terapie in atto e riducendo la quantità di farmaci.

Pratiche note da tempo che a Venezia venivano già applicate presso l'ospedale psichiatrico di San Servolo dove varie attività manuali fra cui anche la coltivazione di orti e camp i dell'isola erano spesso affidate a pazienti.

Esperienze di ergoterapia o

terapia occupazionale, per recuperare o mantenere le competenze della vita quotidiana e lavorativa, di cui le cartelle cliniche riportano gli esiti positivi.

Ma negli ultimi anni sono principalmente due le esperienze più significative di healing garden sorte a Venezia. Nel maggio 2008 è stato infatti inaugurato il Giardino Alzheimer presso il Centro Diurno della Residenza IRE alla Giudecca su progetto dell'architetto Patrizia Valla . Affacciato sulla laguna meridionale, accanto al giardino storico in cui godere della brezza all'ombra di grandi pini domestici, è uno spazio aperto di facile accesso ed insieme protetto, semplice e ordinato, fruibile e stimolante, dove sollecitare l'orientamento spazio temporale oltre che il riconoscimento delle forme e dei colori. Recinzioni in corda e pavimentazione in tavolato di legno creano un legame con l'ambiente marino dando la

he ancients knew it and we have all confirmed it: immersing oneself in nature, walking in a garden or cultivating plants are activities that can improve mood and reduce stress. A positive rejuvenating and therapeutic role confirmed by scientific studies conducted since the eighties, as garden therapy can significantly improve the quality of a hospital stay and facilitate physical healing processes by stimulating the feeling of well-being, helping to enhance the therapies in place and reducing the quantity of pharmaceutical drugs required.

Practices that have long been known in Venice were already being applied at the psychiatric hospital of San Servolo, where various manual tasks including the cultivation of vegetable gardens and fields of the island were often entrusted to patients.

therapy, to restore or maintain everyday work and life skills, have reported positive outcomes in medical records.

But in recent years two of the most significant experiences of healing gardens have arisen in Venice. In May 2008 the Alzheimer Garden at the Day Centre of the IRE Residence at Giudecca designed by the architect Patrizia Valla was inaugurated. Overlooking the southern lagoon, next to the historic garden where one may enjoy the breeze in the shade of the pine trees, it is an open area easy to access and at the same time protected, simple and uncluttered, enjoyable and stimulating, where spatio-temporal orientation and recognition of shapes and colours are favoured. Rope fences and paved with wooden planks create a bond with the marine environment, giving the reassuring idea of

Ancor più recente, il Giardino terapeutico creato nel luglio 2013 all'Ospedale San Camillo al Lido di Venezia all'interno del parco già esistente, in quella stretta lingua di terra racchiusa fra la laguna nella zona di Malamocco e la profonda spiaggia sul mare Adriatico protetta da alte dune sabbiose su cui crescono piante pioniere.

Primo progetto in Italia pensato specificamente per pazienti ricoverati in Neuroriabilitazione, questo Giardino terapeutico è stato progettato e donato dall'architetto paesaggista Paolo Sgaravatti e dalla garden designer Benedetta Piccolomini .

Facilmente accessibile anche da pazienti in carrozzina o con disabilità fisiche, si presenta come uno spazio accogliente, ordinato e armonioso in cui tutto è stato pensato per essere bello, funzionale e

The first project in Italy created specifically for inpatient neuro-rehabilitation, this therapeutic garden was designed and donated by the landscape architect Paolo Sgaravatti and the garden designer Benedetta Piccolomini .

ove eravamo rimasti?

Ah sì, a Mazzorbo e alla mia promessa di condurti in barca per canali, terre emerse e “ghebi”…

Qui siamo nel cuore della Laguna Nord, al centro di un bacino di oltre 500 chilometri quadrati, con soltanto poco più del 15% tra barene e isole, tutto il resto è acqua. Le sue origini naturali sono molto antiche, qui c’era già questo paesaggio prima che gli Egiziani cominciassero a costruire le piramidi. Ma in realtà la Laguna, così come la vediamo oggi, ha subito mutazioni secolo dopo secolo, anche per mano dell’uomo. Però nel suo insieme è stata fin dall’epoca romana una zona per l’industria delle saline, la caccia, la pesca, l’orticoltura e perfino quale apprezzata località turistica. Sul serio! Ben prima della invasione turistica dei nostri giorni, Vitruvio ne celebrava il clima, Marziale la paragonava a Baia (nei Campi Flegrei, la località vacanziera decisamente più in voga a quei tempi) e Pli-

nio il Vecchio racconta dei canali facilmente navigabili, in fondo molto simili a quelli dove ti sto portando adesso. Guarda quella pianta, lì tra terra e acqua, si chiama Salicornia: un bel fusto sottile ma carnoso, chiamata “asparago di mare” è verde in primavera, poi avvicinandosi la fioritura fra tarda estate e autunno, vira verso il rosso bruno.

In passato era utilizzata anche per ottenere il carbonato di sodio, indispensabile per la lavorazione del vetro a Murano. Ha il sapore degli spinaci e si consuma appena scottata in acqua e condita con poco sale e limone.

Ci si può preparare un ottimo risotto utilizzando, al posto del classico brodo, l’acqua filtrata della cottura dei “caparossoli” o delle “bevarasse” (cioè dei due tipi di vongole più comuni a Venezia). Da cucinare “a risotto” con tostatura iniziale e aggiunta a metà cottura della Salicornia sminuzzata. Da mantecare fuori fiamma con poco burro e prezzemolo, una macinata di pepe e… occhio al sale, perché gli ingredienti sono natu-

Its natural origins are very ancient; this landscape was already here before the Egyptians began to build the pyramids. But in fact the Lagoon, as we see it today, has undergone changes century after century, some man-made. But as a whole this has been an area for the salt industry, hunting, fishing, horticulture and popular tourist destinations since Roman times. Seriously! Sapori d’eccezione, prelibatezze iodate da usare con sapienza, da raccogliere sempre e soltanto con estrema parsimonia, con rispetto e magari con il consiglio di un esperto.

Superata l'isola di Torcello, eccoci nell’area dove si trovavano isole che non ci sono più. Qui sorgevano Costanziaco e, poco più in là, Ammiana.

Erano centri abitati importanti all’epoca della fuga delle popolazioni di Altino dalla furia delle invasioni barbariche. In effetti, in poco più di

Così siamo arrivati al limite Nord della Laguna di Venezia, più in là c’è il fiume Sile e poi la terraferma. Fa buio, attracchiamo a Lio Piccolo, beviamo un’ombra ché ti riporto a casa.

uesta romantica leggenda nasce dallo strano bassorilievo che si trova sulla facciata del palazzo Mastelli , anche se ormai è semplicemente identificato come casa del cammello o, meglio caxa del camélo. Il bassorilievo raffigura infatti un cammello e il suo cammelliere.

A quanto pare ella non si è mai presentata a casa del ricco mercante.

Il palazzo è legato anche ad un'altra leggenda: esso era originariamente l’antica dimora dei mercanti Rioba, Santi e Alfani , provenienti dalla Morea (Peloponneso) attorno al 1112.

Essi sono tutt’ora raffigurati dalle statue poste agli angoli del campo e nella fondamenta.

La leggenda vuole che le statue sarebbero gli stessi mercanti, pietrificati a causa della loro disonestà .

his romantic legend is born from the strange bas-relief found on the facade of the Palazzo Mastelli , which even today is simply identified as the House of the Camel or caxa del camélo. The bas-relief indeed depicts a camel and its driver.

Legend has it that a rich oriental merchant, who had left his homeland to travel to Venice, carved a camel with its driver on the facade of his new Venetian home so that his beloved, who had not accepted his proposal of marriage, could easily recognize it: " I therefore leave with a broken heart, and I will try to forget you, but if one day you wish to come to me in Venice, you can simply ask where to find the house of the camel".It seems she never ame
