Orinda SUMMER Enrichment Program
Elementary Program 1st–5th Grade: A Run Through the Jungle
Rainforest Adventures Entering Grades K–5
Jim Bartleman, Program Director
Welcome to the Rainforest Adventures! Our program, taught by some of the finest teachers in Orinda’s school district, has featured a high quality summer enrichment experience for Orinda’s school children for almost three decades! Join us for Summer Enrichment 2014 as we take a ‘Run Through the Jungle’ to study one of the world’s most interesting and yet least understood places: the Rainforest! Even though they contain more than half of the world’s plants and animals, we are just beginning to explore and understand these amazing places that are home to amphibians, birds, insects, mammals, plants and reptiles that are truly astonishing—such as butterflies with an 8 inch wingspan, plants that build structures to water themselves (bromeliads) ants that cut leaves to build structures, unbelievably beautiful orchids, and fascinating versions of monkeys, song birds, cats, dolphins, frogs and snakes. Spend a busy summer with us as we make models of many of the above creatures and plants and learn the cultures of native peoples and those who live nearby. As always, we will build, paint, draw, cartoon, write about, craft, sing, dance, learn languages and math as we journey from high in the rainforest’s canopy, down through the understory, and then to the forest floor. Be wildly enriched on our expedition through one of the world’s most captivating places! For those interested in staying for an afternoon sports program, we now offer a lunch transition ‘lunch bunch program’. Location: Elementary School TBD
Kindergarten Program: The Gentle Jungle A self-contained 3-hour class. We proudly present, “The Gentle Jungle,” featuring our 4-week Arts and Kindergarten preparation curriculum, lovingly taught by kindergarten specialists, especially designed to ease incoming K-kids into school with a love of learning! The morning mimics a regular kindergarten school day. Our “Rain Forest/Jungle” theme gently takes us into a world of amazing animals and absolutely fascinating plant life not widely seen or appreciated, with lots of fun and study for our newest students! Jungle-themed activities in writing, math, science, beginning reading skills, music and art, and featuring very up close looks at butterflies, frogs, bugs, monkeys, birds and jungle-y plants! All woven together in a visual and performing arts style! The vast new ‘jungle’ of the school world welcomes you! No camp 7/4 Barcode Dates

Grade-specific self-contained 3-hour classes. We present “A Run Through the Jungle.” Our elementary age students journey into the truly fantastic world of incredible animal and plant life that is the Rain Forest. We study and delight to the amazing eco-system that is home to a staggering number of Earth’s living things. Our program in each classroom features these elements: • Drawing and Painting the Rain Forest—Each student has a summer Rain Forest sketch book and receives expert drawing instruction twice weekly—animals, plants and jungle features. Students take home a full sketch book at program’s end. • Jungle Science Journals—Keep a journal, writing science facts and learning illustrating and labeling techniques. • Rain Forest Art—Create jungle-themed art works, in a variety of media, to take home and grace your jungle! • Modeling Life in an Eco System—Receive instruction to model several creatures and the structure of “canopy-to-floor” rain forests. • Rain Forest Music—Hear music from Rain Forest native people and have many opportunities to learn songs with animal and jungle themes. • Jungle Wood Projects—Create quality wood construction projects—toys, games or instruments. • Fun!—We pack fun into every minute! We strive to put a handson fun into each day, with an emphasis on student investigation, creation, and expression. To us, that is truly enriching to students! Hilary Ford
Enrich your child’s world with a delightful hour of science, sculpting and children’s literature! We will learn interesting facts about a different animal each day, sculpt it out of clay, and wrap things up with a story about the critter du jour. Basic sculpting and glazing techniques will be taught to assist in the creation of these future family heirlooms. A new group of animals will be studied each session, so the class is fresh and exciting for continuing students. Students will create four critters, M–Th, and return the following week to glaze projects. A $20 lab fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of camp. Each session covers a number of writing techniques and genres. We also explore the various parts of speech and how they build the foundation of solid writing. Highlights of the week include: filling your personal writing journal with ideas and inspiration, making connections with literature, exploring nature and Orinda’s public art on daily walks, and sharing your original work at a reading for family and friends.
