Studies show that students who play bridge practice math and reasoning skills and perform better on standardized tests than those who do not. Aristocrats Kids ’N Dance Staff
Children of all abilities are proud to be a part of our polished mini-productions of musicals that are fun, challenging, and engaging. Cast members learn to develop character, vocal technique, presentation, and dance skills. The Orinda Little Theater (4–8 year olds) sing, dance and perform a short play. The Youth Theater presents plays lasting about 40 minutes with about 4–6 songs and the cast for 8–14 year olds present plays lasting about 1-1/2 hours with 10–12 songs. Participants are expected to independently study their lines, songs, and blocking (as scheduled) and to attend all rehearsals. In addition, parents support the quality of our productions by committing a required six hours of time (or pay a $60 opt out fee). Most costumes are supplied, but parents are required to provide the basics. Please have child prepare a song for the first day of class (except for Orinda LIttle Theater). Children do not have to know how to read for the Orinda Little Theater shows. Please read refund policy carefully, but absolutely no refunds or credits are issued once this program begins. History of Civilization: Northern Renaissance Ages 18Y and up
James Hadley
This popular multimedia lecture series tours the civilization of Northern Europe from 1300–1600. Vaneyck and Durer, Shakespeare and Luther, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, as well as assorted composers, architects, saints, and soldiers are part of this popular program. The lectures put the great creative accomplishments of the period in a context such that the connections between them and the history of which they are a part of may be understood. The visual arts, music, literature, and history are all here, treated from a thoroughly interdisciplinary point of view. Extensive use is made of slides, literary excerpts, and recordings. Honoré de Balzac and The Human Comedy Ages 18Y and up
Dr. Jerry Bryant
Balzac is accepted as perhaps the main founder of European literary realism, the first novelist to descend into the streets where he minutely observed the lives, loves, conflicts and revenges of ordinary people, regarding it all as the human comedy. In this course, we’ll look at Balzac the man and four of his most celebrated novels: Eugenie Grandet, Père Goriot, Cousin Bette, and Cousin Pons, in that order. Dr. Bryant taught English and American Literature at California State University, East Bay, for some 30 years before his retirement. He has been teaching at the Orinda Community Center for several years.

Writing Your Family Story Ages 18Y and up
Ann G Thomas
How much do your children and grandchildren know of your family history? Family membership matters and knowing our family’s stories is the manual for membership. It has always been the job of the family’s elders to pass on the stories to the next generation. In this class we learn how to write our stories in fun and interesting ways. If you’ve begun writing your family’s stories or are new to this type of writing and would like to begin, this is a class for you. We will learn how to write about our family history in scenes that will capture the interest of those who come after. We will explore what makes family members come alive on the pages, what details to include, and how our writing will capture and communicate the strengths and values of our family. This class is a gift to ourselves and to the children and grandchildren who follow.
