ORINDA CAMPS INFORMATION

Choose your own adventure camp guide! Step 1: Select your week Step 2: Find your age Step 3: Choose your adventure! Full-time care and programming available from 7:30 am–6:00 pm, Monday–Friday starting at $380* for Camp Orinda and $440* for adventure camps**. • Fees are $205/$235.75 (NR) for AM Camp only, or PM Camp only, held at the Orinda Community Center. • Fees are $410/$471.50 (NR) if you choose both an AM and PM Camp.* FREE Lunch Bunch (12:00–1:00 pm); registration is required.** Don’t miss our 2019 Enrichment Program! Weeks 2–5. See page 12 for details.

• AM Extended Care (7:30–9:00 am) and PM Extended Care (4:00–6:00 pm) options are available for an additional $15/$17.25 (NR) each. *Must register for Extended Care. **Material fees may apply and will be collected at registration. All camps will have a 3% facility preservation fee applied.

Get Paid to Have Fun! Have you ever wanted to work with children? Do you function well in a fast-paced, action-packed environment? Do you want to go on fun trips to Waterworld, Six Flags, Sky High and more? Camp Orinda may be the perfect opportunity for you. The City of Orinda is looking for motivated, responsible, outgoing and fun-loving individuals to join our team as camp counselors this summer. Applications and additional questionnaire can be found on our city’s human resources page at: cityoforinda.org. Applications are due 3/15/19. We will contact applicants shortly thereafter to schedule interviews.

A 3-hour class for students who will enter Kindergarten or Transitional Kindergarten in the Fall of 2019, we proudly present “Our Fabulous Five Senses!”, featuring our 4-week kindergarten preparation curriculum, lovingly taught by an Orinda kindergarten teacher with over 40 years of experience in Orinda Kindergarten classrooms! This unique class has been specially designed to ease incoming K-kids into school with a love of learning and a positive jumping start on socialization! The morning exactly mimics a regular kindergarten school day. Our Five Senses theme features a fun look at exactly how we see, hear, touch, smell and taste, and also how we use our senses to make sense of our world! Our busy mornings will feature many stories, crafts and other senses-related readiness activities in beginning reading, writing, math and science. Lots of fun and study for our newest students! Every student will receive quality instruction in singing, drawing and woodworking, learning several songs, making directed drawings in a sketchbook, and building many crafts and wood projects to take home, including a loop viewer, a working banjo, an animation flipper and so many more! WEEKS: 1–9 The City offers morning extended care from 7:30 am–9:00 am. Staff provides games, activities and crafts for your child until it is time for their morning camp. At 9:00 am all campers will be dropped off at their morning camp (this only pertains to camps taking place at the Orinda Community Center). Space is limited, sign your child up today and choose your own adventure! WEEKS: 1–9 Let us create a full day camp for you, as you choose your own adventure! At the conclusion of each lunch bunch, staff will drop your child off at their afternoon camp. Lunch Care is provided FREE! WEEKS: 2–9 Camp Orinda is back and better than ever! Each summer, Camp Orinda offers the best full-day traditional camp experience for active kids, looking for adventure. Each week features fun camp themes, games, crafts, sports, and more designed to keep your camper engaged, learning, and having fun. Each week also includes two awesome field trips, all expenses paid, to places kids love throughout the Bay Area including: Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Sky High, Exploratorium, and more. Dive into the deep blue sea! We’ll explore the deep, searching for giant squid, mermaids, and most importantly—fun! Field trips: Antioch Aquatic Center, Silliman Aquatic Park.

WEEK 3, SUPERHEROES

Welcome to the jungle, and plains, and forests—welcome to Nature Week! This week we’ll learn about nature, animals, and the natural world around us. We’ll take “nature walks” through the park, learn about local plant and animal life, make fun nature collages and visit our animal friends at the Oakland Zoo and Curiodyssey in San Mateo! Field trips: Oakland Zoo, Curiodyssey.

The city needs your help! With your awesome powers only you can save the day and defeat the forces of evil! Campers learn about their favorite comic heroes while creating their own adventures using their strongest special power—imagination! Field trips: Cal High Pool, Hurricane Harbor.

WEEK 4, FANTASYLAND

Dragons, Knights, Queens, and Kings await in Camp Orinda Fantasyland! Bring your wildest dreams to life with the magic spells and potions we’ll cook up this week. Field trip: Lake Anza. No camp July 4 and 5.

Camp Orinda: Counselor in Training (CIT)

WEEKS: 5–8 New this summer! Counselor in Training Camp (CIT) Camp is perfect for teens interested in having fun while developing leadership skills. CIT Camp is built on three pillars—Leadership, volunteerism, and fun! Over the course of each weekly session CITs learn and develop the skills necessary to be not only great camp counselors, but leaders. When they’re not learning leadership skills and helping the community, CITs get to have fun, attending two field trips each week with Camp Orinda. Cooking, Kids Italian Dinner

WEEK: 3

It’s time to cook again. Come and join us for a five-day Italian dinner camp. Half way through our camp we will make a shopping list for our ingredients and go to Safeway to purchase the ingredients for our next day’s class. We will learn to make Fettuccine Al Alfredo, Foccaia (bread) Bowtie pasta with Bolognese sauce to Cannoli (stuffed cookie shells with cream and chocolate chips and everything in between Mange’ Mange’. Kids love to eat what they cook and make new friends in the process. Please let the instructor know about any food allergies before class begins. A $25 materials fee due at registration. AGES 6–12Y

WEEKS: 2, 5, 7, 8 For Campers Ages 11–16, entering 6th grade. Our CIT Program is for older campers who are interested in taking on more responsibility and developing leadership skills. CITs are teamed up with an experienced instructor to assist a group of younger dancers; CIT’s will learn how to lead dance warm ups, stretches and story dances. WEEK: 4 Learn fun and easy folk dances from Europe! Children ages 6–10 will learn a warm up exercise, basis of rhythm, clapping and learning to circle o the right and left. No experience necessary! Each day children also participate in other group activities such as ball games, music activities, parachute, and relay and circuit races. WEEK: 4 How many teeth do babies have? Kids? Adults? Have you ever had a cavity? Root Canal? Braces? X-ray? Come learn the answers and other cool dental procedures. Enjoy coloring parts of the tooth like enamel, dentin, pulp, and gums. You will prepare and fill a tooth cavity. We provide you with a model of a mouth to experiment on. Mad Science, 3, 2, 1 Blast Off

WEEK: 1

Yes we are Rocket Scientists! And you can be too! Blast to the top of the class with an in depth look at all things ROCKET! This action-packed week will focus solely on rockets and the physics of rocket flight. After learning the model rocket safety code, campers will build a number of different rockets and participate in the launching, mission control, propulsion, and finally recovery of the rockets they build. Campers will be divided into three groups: altitude trackers, launch preparation, and launchers. Every camper will have an opportunity to try all three. The topics will not necessarily follow this order. However, each of these topics will be included at some point in the camp. A $35 materials fee due at registration. AGES: 7–12Y

WEEK: 1

Shake up a flask of fun in the lab as a junior chemist! These five half days of chemistry are packed solid with cool reactions. We’ll explore and create exciting chemical reactions, make colorful concoctions and bubbling brews. Amaze yourself with magical temperature changing baggie science or growing ghost crystals. Study the chemistry involved in not-so-simple things like chalk and soap, and even experiment with the chemistry used by artists, spies and detectives! Chemists bring home a project each day. Mad Science, Eureka

WEEK: 8 Inventing means curiosity, practicality, necessity, cooperating and dreaming! Join us as we take students on a historical journey with a hands-on approach learning about some of the worlds’ greatest inventors from Leonardo da Vinci to Tesla to Thomas Edison to the Wright Brothers. We challenge our class to use their imaginations and creativity to survive on a deserted island by designing devices to capture food and water, by building bridges, shelters and even a boat to make it off the island. We will put our heads together to imagine the future in space focusing on creating inventions to protect space ships from damaging space rays and designing a safety capsules for payloads returning from space. These are only a few examples. While Thomas Edison said “invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration,” this camp is 100% FUN! An additional $35 materials fee will be added at registration. CAMP DESCRIPTIONS

Musical Theater Camps

WEEKS: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 Children of all abilities are invited to be a part of our polished productions of musicals that are fun, challenging, and engaging. Self-esteem skyrockets as members learn to develop character, vocal technique, presentation, and dance skills. Participants are expected to independently study their lines, songs, blocking, and attend all rehearsals. Most costumes are supplied, but parents are required to provide the basics. Show days and times are subject to change. Parents are asked to volunteer 2–4 hours helping with set up/break down, backstage, or bringing scenery back to Oakland. You may pay a $65 parent helper opt-out if you do not have time to help. There will also be a fee for show tickets. No refunds once program begins. All full-day participants MUST enroll in Extended Lunch Care.

Plays for ages 4–8 last approximately 40 minutes with about 4–6 songs and the children may be prompted during the play if needed. We do not hold formal auditions with the 4–8 group. The process is low key and designed to be fun. Teachers will invite anyone to sing a song on their own but it is not a requirement. Everyone will get a part whether they sing alone or not. Plays for ages 6–10 last approximately 50 minutes with about 6–8 songs. Plays for ages 8–14 last approximately 1 hour 15 minutes with about 10–12 songs. Participants of the older groups are expected to independently study their lines, songs, blocking, as scheduled and to attend all rehearsals.

We teach all campers how to rally throughout the week so that they can go home and play tennis with their family and friends. Our teaching methodology is customized to meet the needs of every level of player in this camp, regardless of age. We want the kids to have an amazing experience and love tennis. WEEKS: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Welcome to Paragon Jr. Tennis! The Orange/Green Ball Jr. Tennis Camp is for beginners/intermediate/semi-advanced players who either have the skills to rally and compete or still need to develop these skills from the ground up. As always we do our best and divide groups into similar levels so that they feel comfortable and happy with who they are with. More advanced technique is taught within this camp including topspin and backspin, volleys and overheads, serving, and of course ground strokes. Match play for singles and doubles is also introduced in this camp and suggestions are made to parents on what the next steps could be if their child wants to play at the USTA level. WEEKS: 6, 7 Become inspired as you work on scripts, short stories, memoirs, essays, comic novellas, and poetry. Students will receive daily prompts to help create new work, or they may bring writing that they are developing to class for feedback. This camp culminates in an online teen creative writing magazine showcasing the writers’ works. Be published online! Camp is for ALL LEVELS of writers. A $10 materials fee due at registration. REFUND AND TRANSFER REQUESTS

Registration may be cancelled up to 5 days prior to the scheduled camp for a refund minus a processing fee of $5 for credit cards or $20 for checks. Requests less than 5 days prior to the start of the camp are subject to approval by Recreation Staff. No refunds after the program has begun. VISIONS IN EDUCATION CLIENTS

General Registration Information

On May 2, 2017, the Orinda City Council approved the Facility Preservation Fee for the Parks and Recreation Department. The fee is similar to the existing Per Player Fee applied to Sports Facility rentals for sports facility maintenance. This fee is currently applied as a tax to each department transaction (excluding sports facility rentals) in order to provide transparency in how the fee is collected. The funds generated will be used for the preservation of recreation facilities, particularly the Orinda Community Center, and help supplement the limited resources available in the General Fund. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is required for all camps prior to participation. Register early as some camps fill quickly or may be cancelled due to low enrollment. You will be notified if a camp is cancelled, or if there is a change. CANCELLED CAMPS

Camps not meeting the minimum enrollment 10 days prior to the start of camp will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued.
