USS POTOMAC: SPECIAL WORLD TRIP

Come with us on the USS Potomac to explore the SF Bay, and how it became a very busy hub of WWII. You’ll see shipways where newly constructed boats and ships were built and launched. We’ll cruise past the old Naval Air Station, which was a major facility of aircraft repair, and from where Jimmy Doolittle loaded their B-25s aboard the USS Hornet, for our first bombing run over Tokyo. While we’re cruising about the Bay, learn how FDR used the Potomac in a bit of subterfuge leading up to his meeting with Winston Churchill, to discuss the Atlantic Charter. Tea, coffee, water and boxed lunch will be provided. Docents will be on hand to give tours of the ship. The Bay is often colder than the shore, so dress warmly and bring extra layers! Deck may be slippery, so please wear flat shoes with non-skid soles.

HOLIDAYS AT FILOLI GARDENS/MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HERITAGE TRIP

Next stop will be at the Museum of American Heritage (MOAH) which features exhibits that present 19th and 20th century electrical and mechanical inventions. You will see how these inventions shaped America displayed in a century-old home and garden! MOAH’s collection of 5,000+ artifacts are displayed in a permanent and rotating exhibits which emphasize invention and technology from 1750–1950. Date

BEGINNING NOW

Facility Preservation Fee On May 2, 2017, the Orinda City Council approved the Facility Preservation Fee. This is an administrative fee similar to the existing Per Player Fee for Sports Leagues in which a 3% charge will be added to each department transaction (excluding sports facility rentals). The funds generated by this fee will be used exclusively for the maintenance and preservation of non-sports specific recreation facilities, particularly the Orinda Community Center, and help supplement the limited resources available in the General Fund. The Orinda Community Center was built in 1925 and has experienced periods of renovation through the years. However, we have experienced several decades of deferred maintenance and several building amenities have reached, or are nearing, the end of their useful lives, including the roof, the windows, the HVAC systems, and much of the flooring. And as more time passes, the more costly the projects will be. Although Orinda’s current economic state cannot support the entire cost of the maintenance, the City is committed to improving energy efficiency and is working with agencies that can provide assistance with design, implementation, and financing.
