My First Art Class Ages 1.5–5Y
Debbie Madison
Explore five art stations each week where making a mess is part of the process. You have fun, we clean up! Glitter, glue, paint, collage, play clay; we do it all. Art projects continue to change all year long. Process rather than product is emphasized. Art experiences are age-appropriate with the children having the freedom to explore materials at their own pace and in their own way. The class ends on a musical note with singing and dancing and having too much fun. This is a parental or caregiver participation class. $15 materials fee due to the instructor on the first class. INTERNATIONAL CREPES WORKSHOP
ASIAN APPETIZERS FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Crepes can be found in one form or another around the world, and they can be served as an appetizer, snack, salad, main entrée, or dessert. Let’s try crepes of milk and cream from the West, and crepes of coconut and nectar from the East. Let’s try fillings of cheeses and wines from Europe, and fish sauce and toddy from Indochina. Learn how to make different batters and fillings and try your hands on various techniques in spreading and stuffing crepes. We will hands-on prepare most popular crepes from both worlds, such as Blintzes and cheese sauce, Chinese Muu Chu, French sweet crepe suzette with fresh seasonal fruits, Thai and Vietnamese moon crepes. Bring your sharp chef’s knife, cutting board, hand towel and your own beverage. Materials fee of $12 is due to the instructor.
Holiday Seasons are here and it’s time to offer your best to families, friends, and love ones. Instead of cold cuts and potato chips, let’s make your own special hors d’oeuvres, appetizers, and snacks to serve at your holiday party. Varieties of delicious morsels: easy, simple, and attractive are combined to create these cocktail hors d’oeuvres and finger food offerings. Ingredients and techniques of both worlds are infused in hands-on preparing one of a kind snacks, appetizers, and hors d’oeuvres such as Indian Stuffed Bread, Crunchy Noodles, Yakitori, Salmon Rolls, Lemongrass Nuggets, Chocolate & Coconut Pockets, etc. Some dishes can be prepared a lot in advance and frozen for several meals. Bring your sharp chef knife, cutting board, hand towel and beverage. Materials fee of $12 is due to the instructor.

Beginning Obedience is the foundation for all training goals. We teach you how to motivate your dog to want to learn the basics of heel, sit, and down. We teach how to shape the “leave it” and “come” commands, and the command “wait” to prevent your dog from bolting through doors. This is a critical step in developing a healthy bond, and puts your dog on the road to a more meaningful life. The first class of the session is mandatory, and you come without your dog. Appropriate for dogs 20 weeks and older. Please bring a copy of your dog’s vaccination records for the instructor to keep. Minimum age for handler is 18. Barcode Dates

Literature I Charles Dickens, the Prose Shakespeare Ages 18Y and up
Jerry Bryant
I Charles Dickens and His Novels. Charles Dickens is the English prose story-teller. He’s sentimental, moralistic, and melodramatic. His heroines can be saccharine stereotypes, his heroes improbably virtuous prigs, his villains caricatures. But no novelist is more inventive of character and action, no one sets a scene better, no one renders more vivid impressions, no one can produce more excitement, pathos, sadness, happiness, indignation, approval, than Charles Dickens. In this course we’ll look at these characteristics as they appear in three of his earliest novels: Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, and The Old Curiosity Shop. The castle, built in 1908, boasts a long colorful history. This 1.5 hour event includes light refreshments and time to revel in the whimsy of this museum-like seaside treasure. With its square towers and walls made of rectangular concrete blocks, this architectural oddity looks like something out of a Shakespeare play. In the aftermath of the 1906, this castle was constructed so that it could stand up to both fire and earthquake. The result was this fortress-like concrete compound in Pacifica. The Castle does have stairs and wheelchairs and walkers do not fit through some of the doorways. After the tour a hosted lunch is included at a nearby restaurant. Activity Level: 3

PARKS & FACILITIES
MORAGA WAY The long awaited, highly anticipated, new Art and Garden Center is open. Escape into the Wilder hills surrounded by open space. This new facility, with it’s picturesque setting, is the perfect venue for any gathering. The approximate 6,500 square foot “L-shaped” building consists of a single room and three adjacent rooms separated by two partition walls and a small lobby area separating the spaces. The three adjacent rooms can also be used as a grand room impeccably suited for a spirtual retreat. With an open and exposed industrial style ceiling, natural light glistens through the windows and radiates through the room, with the honey-chesnut luxury vinyl tile planks flowing from one end of the room to the other. As you walk throughout the rest of the building, the polished concrete flooring offers high light reflectivity and maintains the bright, clean, and industrial space.
& Garden Center
If you have held a private event in one of the city facilities and have pictures you would be willing to share, please send them our way! We would love to see how you transformed the room. Please email them to orindaparksrec@cityoforinda.org. 45

REGISTRATION | FALL/WINTER 2019
General Registration Information Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is required for all classes and camps prior to participation. Register early as some classes fill quickly or may be cancelled due to low enrollment. You will be notified if a class is cancelled, or if there is a change. CANCELLED CLASSES
Classes and activities not meeting the minimum enrollment 2–4 days prior to the start of class will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued. REFUND AND TRANSFER REQUESTS
A 3% facility preservation fee applies to all classes. SINCE AUGUST 2018
Facility Preservation Fee On May 2, 2017, the Orinda City Council approved the Facility Preservation Fee for the Parks and Recreation Department. The fee is similar to the existing Per Player Fee applied to Sports Facility rentals for sports facility maintenance. The Parks and Recreation Department implemented the fee with the Fall/Winter class registration beginning August 1. This fee is currently applied as a tax to each department transaction (excluding sports facility rentals) in order to provide transparency in how the fee is collected. The funds generated will be used for the preservation of non-sports specific recreation facilities, particularly the Orinda Community Center, and help supplement the limited resources available in the General Fund. To learn more, visit http://orindaparksandrec.org/400/Facility-Preservation-Fee
Registration may be cancelled up to 5 days prior to the scheduled class for a refund minus a processing fee of $5 for credit cards or $20 for checks. Requests less than 5 days prior to the start of the class are subject to approval by Recreation Staff. No refunds after the program has begun. MEDICATION
If medication is needed (prescription or over the counter) for underage participants, a supplemental Parental Consent & Directions to Staff for the Self-Administration of Medications Form is recommended. Form available on our website (orindaparksandrec.org) or at the office. Parks and Recreation Forms can be downloaded at www.orindaparksandrec.org/328/Forms-and-Documents.
