Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda Libraries present:

Lamorinda Reads! 2013 The Lamorinda Libraries are thrilled to present the 2013 Lamorinda Reads book, A Hologram for the King by acclaimed Bay Area author Dave Eggers. Talking about books with friends, family, and neighbors promotes reading, encourages the exchange of ideas, stimulates critical thinking, and sparks public conversation. One City, One Book programs are designed to foster community discussion about books by encouraging an entire community to read the same book at the same time, or, in our case, three communities at one time.

Orinda Library Hours Mon–Thurs 10:00 am–8:00 pm Fri–Sat 10:00 am–6:00 pm Sun 1:00 pm–5:00 pm

Thanks to the generosity of the Orinda Community

All beginning January 15 and culminating in An Evening with Dave Eggers, February 28, 2013.

For more information—One City/One Book tab, www.ccclib.org or contact the Orinda Library. Sponsored by Friends of the Lafayette, Moraga & Orinda Libraries and several generous donors.

History of European Civilization James Hadley

These popular multi-media lecture series provide a grand tour of European civilization. The lectures put the great creative accomplishments of the period in a context such that the connections between them and the history of which they are a part of may be understood. The visual arts, music, literature, and history are all here, treated from a thoroughly interdisciplinary point of view. Extensive use is made of slides, literary excerpts, and recordings. Age of Elegance: Late 16th to 17th Century

Rembrandt and Rubens, Charles 1 and Louis XIV, Milton and Moliere, French chateaux and English estates, and a wide variety of baroque composers are included. Location: Library, Auditorium Barcode Dates Day Time Res/Non

Dr. Jerry Bryant

Dr. Bryant taught English and American Literature at California State University, East Bay, for some 30 years before his retirement. He has been teaching at the Orinda Community Center for several years. Gustave Flaubert and His War Against the Middle Class

Unlike Balzac, Flaubert felt a real animosity against the French middle class in the mid-nineteenth century—their materialism, their greed, their vulgarity (as he saw it), and especially their pious refusal to educate girls in the realities of the male world that left them unprotected against the wiles of predatory men, and victims of their dreams of romantic fulfillment. Called the founder of Naturalism, Zola wrote voluminously with the idea of making his novels a kind of scientific experiment, setting his characters in an environment or social system, and then resolving the question of temperament and environment mathematically, giving us the idea his novels are dryer and more mechanical than they are in the reading. Writing Your Family Story

Adult Classes | Literature, Martial Arts, Music

Ages 18Y and up

Orinda Karate-do Ann G. Thomas

How much do your children and grandchildren know of your family history? Knowing our family’s stories is the manual for family membership. It has always been the job of the family’s elders to pass on the stories to the next generation. If you’ve begun writing your family’s stories or are new to this type of writing and would like to begin, this is a class for you. We will learn how to write our stories in fun and interesting ways, to capture the interest of those who come after. We will explore what makes family members come alive on the pages, what details to include, and how our writing will communicate the strengths and values of our family. This class is a gift to ourselves and to the children and grandchildren who follow. Location: Library, May Room Barcode Dates Day Time Res/Non
