Who was up and who was down last week
LOSERS THE BEST OF THE REST CORDELL CLEARE & YUDELKA TAPIA
Even though both suffered primary defeats in June, the pair will almost certainly be heading to Albany in January. Cordell Cleare as the county committee’s choice to replace former state Sen. Brian Benjamin in Harlem, and Yudelka Tapia as the insiders’ pick to fill retired Assembly Member Victor Pichardo’s seat in the Bronx.
MEISHA PORTER
The New York City schools chancellor got the go-ahead from a federal appeals panel to enforce a vaccine mandate for school workers. Sure, she may catch flak from disgruntled staff, but at least vaccinations are rising.

ERIC GOLDSTEIN Would you eat a chicken nugget with metal in it for $67,000? Maybe. Would you serve the nuggets to kids for that price? No way. And that’s where New York City Department of Education executive Eric Goldstein went wrong, according to federal prosecutors, who said he pocketed the bribe to get the tainted nugs back on the menu. That crossed a line, even in this city of street meat, dollar slices and dirty water dogs. THE REST OF THE WORST RAY SANCHEZ
One of New York City’s largest homeless shelter operators got the boot from the Department of Homeless Services. Aguila Inc. will no longer run the men’s shelter at the Park View Hotel. CEO Ray Sanchez failed to reform the notoriously problematic but politically connected nonprofit.
KEVIN HENDERSON
If you’re in law enforcement and lose the support of your union, you know you’re toast. Ontario County Sheriff Kevin Henderson resigned over allegations he made sexual, homophobic and racist remarks. With subpoenas issued, he stepped down.

MARY BASSETT There is just something about the former New York City health commissioner that left-leaning legislators and medical professionals can’t help but love. Progressive cred and progressive bona fides are the source of much praise for her nomination as state health commissioner. She also has an established track record of handling disease outbreaks without withholding nursing home data from elected officials and the public.
OUR PICK
OUR PICK
WINNERS
It’s always election season in New York. We’re not even through the 2021 elections, and yet the 2022 cycle is already barreling toward us. State Sen. Brian Kavanagh got some bad news last week as socialist Alana Sivin declared her intention to primary him. Kavanagh won’t be the only Democrat facing a progressive challenger in 2022. But before we get ahead of ourselves musing about winners and losers of the future, let’s take a moment to appreciate all the wins and losses of the past week.
