CITY & STATE’S cover story this week presents the Winners & Losers of 2020 as compiled by the editorial staff. Among the winners chosen was the Black Lives Matter movement. BLM pushed for social justice long before the police killings of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky this year. Those tragedies and others involving Black people slain by cops fueled the movement’s call for change and set in motion police reforms in New York City and New York state. While the movement still has a lot of work to do on the issue of systemic racism in policing, BLM got lawmakers to take action and offered hope that change is possible. That’s why the editorial staff decided that the movement, as a whole, deserved the recognition. As for the losers this year, some of our editorial staff picks, from New York City Hall all the way up to the White House, deserve the “L” sign on their foreheads – as Jim Carrey demonstrated while impersonating another big winner, President-elect Joe Biden, on “Saturday Night Live.” This week’s issue also features our annual Responsible 100, which honors New York’s business, nonprofit and academic communities working at the forefront of the Corporate Social Responsibility movement. City & State will celebrate the honorees on Dec. 16 at the 2020 Responsible 100 Virtual Luncheon.

Already, the reopening of schools threatens to widen the racial disparities already made worse during the pandemic, as 12,000 more white students returned to classrooms than Black students, and remote learning remains a struggle for many. De Blasio announced a plan to address achievement gaps caused by the pandemic beginning next year.
INDOOR DINING ON THE WAY OUT A RETURN TO SCHOOL IN NYC
Several weeks after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio closed schools – a decision made when the city hit a 3% positivity rate threshold – some schools have reopened for the second time this year. This time, schools that can accommodate it can have students return for full-time in-person instruction, rather than a hybrid model with parttime remote learning. Students who chose to remain fully remote can
remain so. Students in 3-K, pre-K, kindergarten and elementary school were the first to head back, with special education students attending District 75 schools returning next. The city has promised more aggressive testing in schools to ensure they remain safe. As of yet, the city has not released a plan about middle and high schools, which remain entirely remote after they shut down last month. Of course, there is no guarantee that schools won’t close again under potential state restrictions,
On Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that beginning on Monday, indoor dining will be forced to shut down in New York City, as COVID-19 cases continue to spike throughout the state. Throughout the rest of the state, indoor dining capacity will decrease from 50% to 25%. Earlier in the week the governor said that if hospitalization rates didn’t stabilize soon, he would need to hit the brakes on indoor dining. He cited new federal guidance about the high-risk nature of indoor dining, especially in

But the pandemic has ushered in a flood of such closings, as small business owners face financial devastation and an uncertain path to recovery. New York magazine paid tribute here to 500 businesses that have been forced to close their doors for good since the start of the pandemic.

Previously, parts of the state would shut down as part of Cuomo’s microcluster strategy, based mostly on infection rate. Now, regional shutdowns are on the table if a region hits 90% capacity in hospitals.
RACE FOR THE 22ND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT DRAGS ON
As electors prepare to cast their votes to officially elect President electJoe Biden, the race for the 22nd Congressional District upstate remains undecided. In the latest development, a judge ordered a partial recount of over 2,000 disputed absentee and affidavit ballots. The ruling represented a victory for Rep. Anthony Brindisi, who hopes to pick up more votes to overcome the 12-vote margin between himself and Republican Claudia Tenney, who wanted the results certified as is. The recount will include recently discovered ballots that had never been counted, like the 55 found in Chenango County. The fate of a stained ballot, which drew debate over whether the mark was chocolate or blood, was also decided: Herkimer County election officials will count the vote.

RANKED-CHOICE VOTING UNDER ATTACK
Just weeks before the first scheduled ranked-choice voting election in New York City is meant to take place, some city lawmakers questioned the city’s preparedness to implement the new system and expressed outrage about the plan. At a City Council hearing, several lawmakers said the city should try to postpone ranked-choice voting, asserting that city officials have failed in their responsibility to educate voters, especially in Black and Latino communities, with a special election weeks away and the pandemic causing other complications. Soon after that, some of the lawmakers who made the criticism filed a lawsuit that could postpone implementation for an undetermined amount of time. In addition to seeking a stay for the upcoming February special elections, the complaint is also seeking a permanent injunction until a judge

Democratic Rep. Max Rose, who recently lost his reelection campaign to Republican Nicole Malliotakis, appears to be entering the growing pool of candidates running for New York City mayor in 2021. Rose filed with the Campaign Finance Board, declaring that he has formed a mayoral campaign committee. However, Rose isn’t the only politician presumed to be in the running for mayor; there have also been whispers about former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang. Recent reports have suggested that Yang will officially announce his candidacy next month.

Early Thursday morning, cab drivers gathered in Lower Manhattan to embark on a multistate caravan to Washington, D.C., where drivers rallied outside the U.S. Capitol for an extension of the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program – a federal unemployment benefits program for self-employed workers and independent contractors. That program, which provides assistance to more than 1.5 million people in the tri-state area, is set to expire at the end of this month. As of last month, revenue for the taxi industry in New York City was down 81% year-over-year. Struggling to pay rent, insurance and loan payments – and, in some cases, even for meals – drivers are being forced to compete for hard-to-find fares just to make a fraction of what they brought in before the pandemic. They may be giving up a day of work, but for Dorothy Leconte, making the trip to D.C. to rally for federal unemployment assistance is worth it. “I get frustrated with this country,” Leconte, a yellow cab driver for over three decades, said. “The trillionaires, the billionaires, the millionaires – they look at little people (like they’re) nothing. They say, ‘You are from a Third World country, you don’t deserve no more than $60 a day to survive.’” Sixty dollars a day in fares has become the norm for some drivers. Before the pandemic – and before increased competition from ride-

hail apps like Uber – Leconte said drivers could easily make $60 an hour. Leconte said she made around $220 a week after taxes under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program. And while an extra federal unemployment assistance benefit providing another $600 a week helped her stay home from work through most of the spring and summer, that benefit expired at the end of July. Since then, she’s had to go back to driving. Leconte has been back at work since August and has yet to make anywhere near enough money to pay her bills. “I have to come to work and risk all of the problems,” she said of the risk of contracting COVID-19 while driving. Leconte’s ex-husband, who was also a cab driver, died from COVID-19 in late March, she said. Leconte has also taken work driving for Amazon Flex and delivering groceries – but that work is low-paying, demanding and time-consuming, she said. That’s why Leconte and other drivers – along with groups that represent them such as the New York Taxi Workers Alliance – are calling for a “people’s stimulus” from the federal government that would include extending Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, reinstating the extra $600 in weekly unemployment benefits, and approving another round of stimulus checks, along with other measures. – Annie McDonough

A Q&A with Bronx borough president candidate

You chair one of the most powerful committees in the City Council, you’re eligible to run for reelection, and you were considered to be a candidate for speaker. Why leave the council? I love my borough. I love the Bronx. I’m a product of my borough. I went to public school here. Had my first job in the Bronx. I was born and raised and never left. And I’m raising my family. I have a 6-year-old. But today, we’re currently in this health pandemic which has ravaged my borough. And I’ve seen it firsthand. I lost my dad to this pandemic. I’ve lost friends to this pandemic. I’m seeing small businesses in my communities close because of this pandemic. Neighbors are literally at the brink of homelessness because of what this pandemic has done to the economy. And with the upcoming term limits (making Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. leave office) there’s going to be a leadership change in the borough, and citywide. I have a proven track record of addressing the core issues that I feel like the Bronx is currently facing, such as affordable housing, health care, reviving the economy and job creation. I see what’s happening in the borough, and I feel like I have this experience and this knowledge, and this love that I have for my community, my borough, I felt the need to throw my hat in the ring and run for borough president. There’s a high demand for housing in the Bronx. But you opposed the Southern Boulevard rezoning and even supported downzoning
certain areas. As borough president, would you support building more housing in the borough? And if so, where? I stood up to the Southern Boulevard rezoning because when I looked at it, about 90% of the empty lots that they were proposing to upzone were privately owned. And I felt, in my heart, there’s no way that I’m going to give away this power to developers. Because that’s the power council members have when we vote on these projects. There’s no way I’m just going to give this up, and just take the developer and the city’s word that they’re going to do the right thing by the community. I believe in responsible development. The way to do it is to really not rush into things, analyze it, get community input, and ensure that the local elected leaders are part of the conversations and build responsibly. Lately we’ve seen elected officials arguing for an end to member deference on land use projects. Do you think the local council member should have the final say? I believe in member deference because who knows their community better than the local member? The people in the community elected that official so that they can represent them and be their voice in City Hall. But when there’s

I’m seeing small businesses in my communities close because of this pandemic. a project that affects an entire borough then I think it’s fair for other members to voice their opinions and vote how they choose. And the example I give you is the Bronx jail. I voted “yes” for the closure of Rikers. But I strongly believed in my heart that the Bronx jail did not belong on the tow pound (lot). I strongly believe that it belonged behind the courthouse. And I voted that way. So I think it can be taken on a case-by-case basis. As of July, you had about $323,000 in your campaign account, much more than any of your opponents. I imagine a lot of donors with real estate ties want to get in front of you since you’re the Land Use Committee chair. Are you declining any sort of contributions for this race? In almost five years on the council, I’ve approved over 7,000 units of 100% affordable housing and mandated a 15% homeless setaside. I turned down the Southern Boulevard rezoning because I felt that 90% of the empty lots were privately owned. And I believe that if I were to approve it, it would displace my constituents. I’m also the co-sponsor of a racial impact study for rezonings. So just to be clear, donations that I get, whether they’re from real estate or not, will never influence my decisions when it pertains to me voting or speaking out for my community or my borough. The borough president has traditionally been close to the Bronx Democratic Party. Are you seeking county support? I think everybody is, right? I’ve been meeting with district leaders, community leaders, of course my colleagues in government in the city and the state and learning about their needs and their wants and, as a borough president, how can I truly represent their communities, and how I can be of help and bring resources to their communities.

“May you live in interesting times.” And boy, did 2020 prove why it’s such an awful thing to wish on somebody. On paper, 2020 was 12 months, just like any other year. But let’s be real, it felt more like a decade, at least. January was a lifetime ago, back before social distancing, Zoom parties and entire countries shutting down. Those times are but a distant memory, with photos of maskless crowds like relics of a time long past. The biggest story at the beginning of the year – the
impeachment of President Donald Trump – was just the first chapter in the epic saga that has been 2020. The year was pretty terrible for just about everybody but Jeff Bezos. But as always, some people still managed to land some victories in this terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year. Though don’t worry, some other people probably had an even worse 2020 than you did. And that’s what landed them here, on City & State’s Winners and Losers of the (very unusual) Year.

At the beginning of 2020, the governor seemed to be succumbing to the much-feared curse of the third term. His approval ratings were underwater. Pesky progressives were challenging him more than ever in the halls of the state Capitol. A massive state budget deficit loomed. Then COVID-19 struck. Less politically astute leaders might’ve leaned on the experts to help them deal with a deadly pandemic and present the facts to the people. Not Cuomo. Even his critics liked that a micromanager like him wanted to step up. He made it look relatively easy to get state legislators to overwhelmingly approve legislation granting him the power to rule by decree for the duration of the emergency. It was the worst and the best of times. Hundreds were dying every day. There was widespread fear that the coronavirus would overwhelm the hospital system. Tough decisions had to be made. Many of those made by the governor would be

called into question later, but not too many naysayers were piping up when “bending the curve� was the daily goal. Gubernatorial briefings became must-watch TV. #President Cuomo was trending. A petulant president was helping Cuomo’s approval rating rocket to the stratosphere. Conservatives were saying he was doing a bang-up job, and talk began of a dark horse candidacy for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. New normal indeed. Not everything worked out for the governor in the end. Republicans went back to demonizing him. Cuomosexuals on the political left moved on to other kinks. Not everyone liked how the governor incorporated his artistic aspirations into his professional work. The state budget deficit is bigger than ever and the coronavirus is staging a comeback. But now he has an Emmy, a bestselling book and a buddy headed to the White House. Pretty good ending for a New York Tough kind of year.

JAMAAL BOWMAN & NICOLE MALLIOTAKIS Out with the old, in with the new. These two incoming members of Congress are the only ones in New York to have successfully unseated an incumbent representative. Jamaal Bowman’s victory was particularly noteworthy, as he not only beat the powerful 30year incumbent Rep. Eliot Engel during in the June primary, he won with a solid 15 percentage-point lead. The middle school principal from Yonkers – who is getting into politics for the first time – proved that a progressive upset isn’t out of reach for candidates other than AOC, even in the suburbs of New York. And Engel did himself no favors throughout the race, getting slammed in the media for staying away from his district early on in the pandemic and getting caught on a hot mic at a press conference saying, “If I didn’t have a primary, I wouldn’t care.” On the flip side, Republican Nicole Malliotakis’ success seemed more likely, given that she was running against a freshman Democrat in Trump-loving Staten Island. But her victory still represents a big boost for her political profile. Going from an unsuccessful run for mayor and a powerless tenure in the Democratic-led state Assembly to becoming the sole Republican in the New York City’s congressional delegation is nothing to sneeze at. And she’s already positioned herself as an antidote to progressive politics, saying she could form an “anti-socialist squad” in Congress.
ANDREA STEWART-COUSINS Underestimate the state Senate majority leader at your own peril. Not only does she have the biggest state Senate conference in practically forever, she has a long history of making her critics look pretty foolish. This includes flipping five longtime Republican districts upstate during the 2020 elections despite millions of dollars spent by the GOP to make Democrats pay for all the progressive reforms they’ve passed since she took command of the chamber two years ago. Believe it or not, the election results suggest voters actually like the new limits on cash bail, police reform, tenant-friendly rent laws, abortion rights, and efforts to prevent climate change from becoming yet another man-made disaster in the state. You might even say that the first Black woman in state history to lead a legislative conference knows a lot more about getting things done than the old boys’ club that used to run the show. Things aren’t always easy with a sometimes unwieldy Democratic conference, but Stewart-Cousins’ members just can’t stop professing how much they love having someone in charge who unites them behind a common cause. We’ll have to wait and see where that leads in the upcoming year, once testy issues like the budget, marijuana legalization and criminal justice reforms could once again tax party unity, but Stewart-Cousins has shown more than once that the era of Democratic dysfunction is long gone in Albany.

BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTESTERS
Socialism is alive and thriving in New York, infuriating the Republican minority and centrist Democrats alike. The New York chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America proved this year that it wasn’t just a one-hit wonder, securing another seat in Congress and four more seats in the state Legislature, unseating several longtime incumbents in the process. Two years after AOC’s historic victory, Rep.-elect Jamaal Bowman, state Sen.-elect Jabari Brisport, and Assembly Members-elect Marcela Mitaynes, Phara Souffrant Forrest and Zohran Mamdani won with the support of a new generation of left-leaning voters – and that’s not even counting Emily Gallagher and Jessica González-Rojas, a couple of DSA members who won without the organization’s endorsement – further deepening the far-left blue streak in New York politics. And for the first time, powerful establishment politicians are taking their young, inexperienced challengers seriously. In years past, candidates may have scurried away from the “socialist” label, but suddenly, it seems like all these young candidates can do is win.
Black Lives Matter was a prominent social justice movement long before this year, but in 2020, protests against systemic racism and police brutality took on a new force. Following the killings of Black people by police this spring – including George Floyd in Minneapolis and Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky – protesters took to the streets across the country, demanding justice: the arrests of the officers involved and wide-scale reform of local police departments. In New York, overwhelmingly peaceful protesters turned out not only in all five boroughs, but large and small cities and towns across the state. Though the movement’s calls for change weren’t answered in their entirety, the state passed a series of police reform measures, including a repeal of 50-a, a provision that kept police personnel records secret, while New York City passed its own measures, including a law banning police chokeholds, and diverted some funds from the NYPD. But organizers say New York still has a long way to go. Activists are calling for more substantial cutbacks to police budgets and for additional reforms, such as limiting police involvement in responding to individuals experiencing mental health crises. While protests have died down since this summer, the Black Lives Matter movement will continue to shape New York policy into the future. “We’re quiet, but we’re not asleep,” Anthonine Pierre, a spokesperson for Communities United for Police Reform, told City & State this fall.

THE BIGGEST LOSERS
Over and over again this year, native New Yorker President Donald Trump has made massive missteps, and his personal attorney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, has completely fumbled his response to them – whether it was Giuliani shouting about alleged voter fraud in the presidential election as hair dye or some other mystery liquid seeped past his temples, or before that, when Giuliani held a press conference at a landscaping company clearly mistaken for the Four Seasons luxury hotel chain, where he began ranting about various conspiracy theories and undermining the president’s legal strategy. The list goes on. Yet despite all of his blunders, Giuliani has remained a major part of Trump’s legal team. Trump, on the other hand, has made even worse decisions this year (and yes, that includes keeping Giuliani on staff). The president failed to create a cohesive response

to the COVID-19 pandemic and helped fuel mistrust in the U.S.’s health system, jeopardizing public safety. The president encouraged protests against state coronavirus restrictions, despite warnings from public health experts not to do so. He also attempted to convince the public that he was the true victor of the presidential election and filed several lawsuits alleging that ballots were fraudulently cast – widely criticized for being devoid of any real evidence and hinging on the word of some outrageous star witnesses. Now, as the Trump presidency comes to a close, Giuliani has reportedly been begging for a preemptive pardon – though he has disputed this claim. And Trump himself is facing an extraordinary number of investigations once he leaves his post at the White House. Lucky for him, he’s got a guy willing to represent him, so long as he’s willing to pony up $20,000 a day.

BILL DE BLASIO
He was given a second chance – and blew it. The former New York City Council member made this same list last year, when he became the first city lawmaker in memory to be suspended from the City Council. He’d reportedly harassed staffers, made offensive comments and retaliated against anybody who cooperated in an investigation. Oh, and he also used public funds for a family wedding in the Virgin Islands. But that’s all in the past! This year, King made history once again when he was the first city lawmaker in memory to be EXPELLED from the City Council. Turns out King basically ignored his punishment from the year before, sidelining the office monitor and never paying his fine. He reportedly retaliated against staffers – again – and when he gave an aide a generous bonus, he demanded a $2,000 kickback. King showed no remorse and denied or rationalized everything until the very end, but his fellow council members had seen enough, and kicked him to the curb for good.
When the book is written on how New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio managed the crises of 2020 (and unlike a certain governor, he’ll have the sense not to write it himself), it very well may start on Saturday night, May 30, when de Blasio defended the New York City Police Department officers who drove their SUVs straight into Black Lives Matter protesters in Brooklyn. Yes, the mayor soon walked it back, but that shocking night was emblematic of how a man who once might have joined the protesters in the streets ended up on what felt like the wrong end of a national argument about police brutality – and a staff who refused to stand behind him. This year, one of the hardest in the city’s history, de Blasio found himself mayor of the one place in the country, maybe the world, most afflicted by the coronavirus. No leader could have avoided the pandemic, but there’s general agreement that an earlier serious response (“If you love your neighborhood bar, go there now”) and more decisive action (Will schools close or won’t they?) could have lessened the death toll and saved New Yorkers from nervous breakdowns. The mayor who thought he could be president-elect now can’t even get his wife elected borough president, and he’s spent the year billions of dollars in the hole, desperately asking for help from Washington leaders who would rather forget all about him. Many New Yorkers feel the same way.

Some among them even thought that they had a chance to regain a significant chunk of the ground they’d lost in the state Senate to the Democrats in 2018. While the coronavirus pandemic sucked months’ worth of political oxygen away from the 2020 campaign, the biggest civil unrest in decades gave Minority Leader Robert Ortt and state Senate GOP Campaign Committee Chair Pamela Helming an opening to make Democrats pay for all those progressive reforms they enacted over the past two years. Sure, the libs had money to work with, but the Republicans had the cops on their side and, as the campaign reached the final stretch, millions in campaign cash through a super PAC funded by conservative donor Ronald Lauder. The super PAC made the same case President Donald Trump was making nationwide about mythical antifa super-criminals run amok. Election night results made it look like the strategy worked, but a deluge of left-leaning absentee ballots meant Democrats ended up picking up seats and scoring their supermajority that cuts the GOP out of the legislative redistricting process. If there is a next time for Ortt and Helming, they might want to wait until all the votes are counted before declaring victory – though we all know who was the brains behind that idea.
As protests against police brutality continued across the nation at the end of the summer, sparked by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, some news came out of Rochester on Sept. 2. A Black man, naked at the time of his arrest and experiencing a mental health crisis, had been suffocated to death by police. And what’s more, Daniel Prude died two months before Floyd, yet his death only hit the papers when his family publicly released body camera footage that showed police covering Prude’s face with a hood and kneeling on his back. That it took months for details to emerge sparked outrage and accusations of a cover-up. Police treated the death like a drug overdose, despite the medical examiner’s conclusion otherwise, and kept quiet about it for months. At the center of the outrage was then-Police Chief La’Ron Singletary and Mayor Lovely Warren. One weathered the backlash, the other didn’t. After a week straight of protests, Singletary abruptly announced that he would retire, along with the entire command staff. But the situation worsened when the city released a trove of documents that bolstered the claims of a cover-up. Among apparent evidence, a top deputy in the police department suggested in a June email to Singletary that going public with Prude’s death might cause “potentially violent blowback” as protests against police brutality rocked the nation. Singletary’s response? “I totally agree.” In light of the new information, Warren fired Singletary before his scheduled retirement. He reportedly learned of the decision on social media.

FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT IN 2020 FOR THE PAST several years, City & State has closed out the year with a list of leaders in the private sector who are actively seeking to help New Yorkers and make our state a better place. It was a nice, uplifting feature that reminded us all that there’s more to life than making money as we brainstorm our own New Year’s resolutions. But 2020 was different. As we shut ourselves in our homes and lost family, friends and neighbors to a deadly pandemic, and as the federal government abdicated responsibility, it fell on state and local governments and private institutions to do the responsible thing and pick up the slack to help New Yorkers in their time of need.
City & State is pleased to announce the 2020 edition of The Responsible 100, our annual list honoring individuals whose work is making life better in communities in New York City and across the state. The leaders recognized below work in government, business, health care, education and nonprofit organizations, among other fields. Tell us about your work. I manage DoorDash’s career accelerator programs for women of all backgrounds and people of color. What does social responsibility mean to you? Social responsibility is about centering the needs and lives of people on the margins (BIPOC, Trans folks, people with disabilities, etc). It’s an acknowledgment that the advancement of the most vulnerable populations needs to be a part of our business strategy. I achieve this by helping the company connect to the people and stories of those within the local economies we wish to empower. What’s the best advice you ever received? You are only as successful as the people you bring up and along with you.

We have often been the only source of outside help for a homeowner, local nonprofit or religious institution trying to restore their building. We also advocate to officially landmark buildings and neighborhoods that matter to diverse communities and try to protect these from inappropriate development. Social responsibility in my work is focused on opportunity and collaboration: for small businesses and entrepreneurs to grow and collaborate with like-minded makers and innovators; for local residents, through collaboration with local workforce development entities, to access jobs near to where they live that pay well and provide career pathways in sectors relevant to today and the future; for students, in collaboration with local high schools and colleges, to interface with businesses through internships and experiential learning opportunities. What’s the best advice you ever received? Vacant, abandoned buildings from another era are an opportunity, not a burden.

Tell us about your work. I co-founded The Doe Fund’s Ready, Willing & Able program, which for 30 years has provided paid work, continuing education, career development training, social services and housing to homeless and formerly incarcerated men.
What does social responsibility mean to you? At both the individual level and organizational level, we are accountable to each other and responsible for making our communities -- however we define them -- places where everyone can live with dignity and respect.
What does social responsibility mean to you? It means providing solutions to the systemic crises our nation faces: poverty, recidivism, and racial and economic injustice. It also means providing a continuum of care. That’s why we’ve pivoted key programs in response to COVID-19, from our street cleaning crews performing enhanced disinfecting services, to emergency stipends for graduates facing eviction or unemployment, to vocational training for a workforce that has gone remote.

I had a teacher, Al Pola, who always pushed me to tackle something harder than what I had mastered and to make volunteering a part of my plan. Those two things combined have shaped who I am.
Tell us about your work. My position entails general oversight of J Strategies along with Julie Miner (my business partner), strategic input on the direction of the firm, and oversight of our largest client, who often focuses on alliance development and community relations work.

What does social responsibility mean to you? Community engagement and active support of diversity is at the heart of social responsibility. It’s critical to not just build awareness within the communities we work in and within our J Strategies family, but to support diversity as well.
What does social responsibility mean to you? There are many parallels to draw upon between the times of today and the times of the 1960s – I believe it would not be in keeping with the missions of Ponce Bank and PDL Community Bancorp to ignore and turn a blind eye to the events of today.
What’s the best advice you ever received? “A fulfilling life is one serving others. But the highest form of respect is to not do for others what they can do for themselves.”
What’s the best advice you ever received? When in doubt, abstain. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. If your gut tells you to be careful, you should be.

What does social responsibility mean to you? Socially responsible people don’t separate their work and personal lives. The same ethical framework that an individual exhibits personally they also exhibit professionally. We all have an obligation to work together to benefit society at large. What does social responsibility mean to you? It means living and working in a way that recognizes, respects and cares for all members of our society. There are so many people with unmet needs; social responsibility compels us to do better in meeting them.

Tell us about your work. I oversee global academic programs at a university with a global footprint. What does social responsibility mean to you? It’s a balance between progress and the welfare of the environment and society. I achieve social responsibility in my work by actively seeking out partners, new hires, and students that are interested in the greater good over their own benefit. What’s the best advice you ever received? The greatest impediment to creativity is our impatience. This advice from Robert Greene’s “Mastery” regularly encourages me to try things in multiple ways through a variety of lenses. While your first idea might rule supreme, you’ll never know until you’ve exhausted all other options.

I am able to help clients comply with employment laws by preparing and reviewing policies and procedures, providing anti-harassment and (diversity, equity and inclusion) training, and conducting workplace investigations, among other services. In 2020, this has included navigating employers through COVID-19 – maintaining safe workplaces, keeping employees healthy, and properly accommodating employees’ needs. What’s the best advice you ever received? The best advice I’ve received is that even if something seems to be working, we should not become complacent. Things that have worked in the past are generally comfortable, perhaps easier, and likely worked because of the social constructs that existed when they were put in place (or perhaps they helped to create those constructs). Rather, we should try to look for better ways. Sometimes this means rethinking whether the “status quo” remains relevant.

The second half of my life, I discovered why I should be significant.” Being successful is a personal end. Being significant is transcending and carries weight in social responsibility.

Inclusivity must become instinctive behavior for leaders at all levels. What’s the best advice you ever received? Pay three genuine compliments a day. So often, we silently admire others when giving verbal affirmation costs us nothing. And when acknowledging a job well done to a peer or recognizing a total stranger for something you notice – whatever it may be – say it out loud. You may be lifting that person up just when they need it most.
President New York League of Conservation Voters Tell us about your work. We educate, engage and empower New Yorkers to be effective environmental advocates. We are the only nonpartisan, statewide environmental organization in New York that fights for clean water, healthy air, renewable energy, open space and a livable climate through political action. Best advice you ever received? I have been lucky enough to have many mentors throughout my career. I have received tremendous advice from each of them about effective advocacy. One overarching theme I have heard from them all: to be successful, you must be able to explain the positive societal impact of the issue you are fighting for to New York state residents. I keep that in mind for every issue that I work on.

I am an engagement executive with more than 26 years of experience with significant system integration and consulting experience, including 21 years at UCI, where I lead our public sector practice. What’s the best advice you ever received? It has come from modeling the behavior of leaders throughout my profession. What’s the best advice you ever received? Mike Bloomberg used to say, “If you ask someone for something in a meeting and they say ‘yes,’ stop talking. Stop selling. Say thank you, shake hands and leave.” That always resonated with me.
