Rep. Tom Reed was already on track to wrap up his term at the end of this year. But just to add a little more chaos to this election season, he decided to resign early and set off a frenzy among Republicans. These three candidates will now have to fight it out for support among the various county chairs.

The United Federation of Teachers’ boss won reelection for a fifth term, but by a narrower margin than in previous elections: 66% of the vote. After two particularly rocky years of pandemic teaching in New York City, it’s no wonder some members were ready for a change.

VICKIE PALADINO If someone throws a pen at a screen in New York City Council chamber, but no one sees, hears or remembers it, did it really happen? Republican Council Member Vickie Paladino alleged that her progressive colleagues “threw objects” at a Zoom video screen when she voiced her support for law enforcement after the subway shooting. Several council members and staff said the incident never happened.

HERCULES REID Can Hercules Reid go from Zero to Hero? Just like that, the Assembly candidate got some muscle in the upcoming special election with a key endorsement from the Zeus of the Big Apple, Mayor Eric Adams. Central Brooklyn residents may not be in love with the mayor, but he did get a whopping 72% in Assembly District 58 in the 2021 primary. And Reid will need all the help he can get if he wants to go the distance.

New York CIty Mayor Eric Adams said Gracie Mansion is filled with ghosts – and that’s expected, for a guy that thinks the city has “a special energy” from the gems and stones in the city’s bedrock. But Hizzoner is on to something – Gracie is home to the fireplace beside which Alexander Hamilton died after his duel. Maybe Adams could hold a seance and ask if the Ghost of Post Past can haunt Rupert Murdoch and get the tabloid back on this side. Read on for last week’s Winners & Losers.
