TECH JOBS HOLD KEY TO NEW YORK'S FUTURE By James Oddo and Marissa Shorenstein
Students graduating from a job retraining program on Staten Island this week are the embodiment of how New York can sustain its recovery from the worst financial crisis in our lifetimes. Just take graduate Prince-Michael Lewis, a 25–year-old who, a few months ago, was earning $10 an hour packaging and shipping items for an online retailer. Today, he’s qualified to get a job designing that website himself that pays six times that amount. The program, run by the College of Staten Island and AT&T, offered 10 young adults from Staten Island the opportunity to receive high-tech IT training, real work experience, mentoring and certification to apply toward a new career. While it’s one small program, it’s part of a much larger and unprecedented partnership taking place between the city and its business community. The goal: making sure New Yorkers are qualified to participate in today’s new job market. New York emerged from the financial crisis a changed city in many ways – one far less reliant on Wall Street
and instead bustling with entrepreneurship and new businesses fueled by increasingly sophisticated technologies. Over the past several years, New York City’s booming tech sector has created 300,000 tech jobs, providing more than $30 billion in wages. But to put our economy on solid footing once again, we need more than the creation of better paying jobs. We need workers with the talent and skills to fill them. That’s the challenge that tech companies like AT&T and others face here and across the nation. In order to accomplish this, we need school systems to teach the skills necessary to participate in the workforce of the future. But even that isn’t enough to bridge the gap. Programs that retrain current workers are critical to filling the 125 million tech jobs (no, that’s not a typo) the economy is creating across the nation. New Yorkers can take comfort in knowing their city is, as always,

ahead of the game. Last year, the de Blasio administration announced a public-private partnership to start providing computer science education to every public school student. Local companies, universities and foundations are investing significant resources in programs that introduce young people to coding and provide internships and mentorship for young men and women. And postgraduate job training programs like the one we offered at the College of Staten Island will increasingly offer residents like Prince-Michael a better chance at competing for the jobs they really want. To be sure, we still have a long way to go. But as long as leaders in business, government and academia continue to act on the opportunities and challenges of a new economy, we will keep moving in the right direction. Libby Wayman is the Global Director of Innovation for Ecomagination. Prior to joining NYPA, Anderson was the Project Office Manager for Hess Corporation, leading projects in the areas of refining, offshore oil and gas production, corporate risk, electricity expense reduction, biofuel strategy and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. Anderson serves on the board of directors of the Smart Electric Power Alliance and the Building Energy Exchange, both educational nonprofit entities focused on promoted clean and efficient energy. She serves on the board of the New York State Women in Communications and Energy and formerly served as its president. Anderson received an MBA from NYU and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Boston University. She was named one of City & State's 40 under 40 Rising Stars in 2012 and one of Diversity Journal's Women Worth Watching in 2015. Michael Hartofilis was a business major at the University of Maryland from 2002-2006. Hartofilis started Greenlight Energy in 2009 with the intention of providing alternative energy solutions for his group medical insurance clients. Greenlight Energy has since expanded its reach to service over 50,000 residents with carbon neutral natural gas and green electricity supply in New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania. When it comes to solar energy, Hartofilis believes that knowledge is power, and misconceptions about renewable energy are severely stunting its growth. For this reason, he has been committed to working with advisors from various industries to ensure that they can be an energy resource for their clients. Hartofilis attributes his passion for renewable energy to his two young sons, Henry and George (with a third due in August). “I am passionate about renewable energy because it provides for my children's future in more ways than one ... Everyone has a role in saving the plant. I've come to find that my role may be to help others identify theirs. I'm passionate about working with others to address misconceptions regarding renewable energy, and changing their perception,� Hartofilis said.
Renee McClure was born and raised on Long Island, her foundation being built on church and family life. She received a B.S. in computer science from NY Institute of Technology and a Masters in the Ministry from California School of Ministry. She started out at an early age with a goal in mind: to own her own company. At the age of 13 she started her first business selling terrariums. Her entrepreneurial spirit has continued with various ongoing initiatives. An employee of National Grid for over 30 years, McClure's expertise lies within IT and community engagement. The foundation of technological skills and passion for the community has provided a win-win combination. She currently is the manager of community and customer management covering Brooklyn. McClure is the community chairwoman of Alliance of Black Professionals at National Grid, vice president of the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College, co-chairwoman of the MWBE Committee, executive board member for the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and an executive team member of the New York chapter of American Blacks in Energy.

Ana Roca Castro is the founder of Latinos in Tech Innovation and Social Media, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the empowerment of the Latino community in the areas of education, health, business and inclusion through the use of tech innovation and social media. RESHMA SAUJANI
Reshma Saujani is the founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, a national nonprofit organization working to close the gender gap in technology. Through its Summer Immersion Programs and Clubs, Girls Who Code is leading the movement to inspire, educate, and equip young women with the computing skills to pursue 21st century opportunities. Started in 2012, the organization has grown to reach 40,000 girls in every state by the end of 2016. Reshma began her career as an attorney and activist. In 2010, she became the first Indian American woman to run for U.S. Congress. During the race, Reshma visited local schools and saw the gender gap in computing classes firsthand, which led her to start Girls Who Code. Reshma has also served as Deputy Public Advocate for New York City and ran a spirited campaign for Public Advocate in 2013. Reshma’s TED talk, “Teach girls bravery, not perfection,” has more than one million views and has sparked a national conversation about how we’re raising our girls. She is also the author of the groundbreaking new book, “Women Who Don’t Wait In Line.”

Dr. Katepalli R. Sreenivasan is the dean of engineering and executive vice provost for science and technology at New York University. He is a physics and mathematics professor, as well as the NYU Tandon School of Engineering Eugene Kleiner Professor for Innovation in Mechanical Engineering. Sreenivasan holds memberships in the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Italy’s Accademia dei Lincei. His many other honors include a Guggenheim fellowship, the Otto Laporte Memorial Award of the American Physical Society, the UNESCO Medal for Promoting International Scientific Cooperation and World Peace from the World Heritage Centre in Italy, and the Multicultural Leadership Award of the National Diversity Council. Before coming to NYU, he served from 2003 to 2009 as the director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. Prior to that, he taught at the University of Maryland as the Distinguished Glenn L. Martin Professor of Engineering and Professor of Physics and served as the Director of the Institute for Physical Science and Technology. At Yale, he held a variety of posts, including teaching in the department of engineering and applied science and being named the Harold W. Cheel Professor of Mechanical Engineering (1988-2002). He also held joint appointments in the departments of physics, applied physics and mathematics; chaired the mechanical engineering department (1987-1992); and served as the acting chairman of the council of engineering (1989). He has been a visiting professor at Caltech, Rockefeller University, Cambridge University, and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, among other institutions.

Solar One provides innovative outreach and education programs that help New Yorkers invest in energy efficiency and renewable upgrades. Whole Buildings, an education and training program, works with an entire building community to save energy and promote sustainable living. Everyone – residents, superintendents, building owners and property managers – benefits because saving energy means saving money and protecting the environment. The program also provides training in water conservation, recycling, and maintaining a healthy living space.

At BNMC Inc. Paul Tyno is responsible for executing the campus Energy Innovation Plan and further developing its overall energy strategy as a collective effort. That effort strives to integrate energy efficiency, demand management, grid modernization, alternative transportation and renewable energy in fostering a sustainable, growing community. Tyno has led multiple energy services companies to become integral resources collaborating with utility companies, RTOs/ISOs, program participants, federal and state regulatory agencies, trade associations, economic development organizations, and affiliate service providers. He has been deeply involved in the electricity industry and dynamic load management arena for a number of years. He was a founding member of a prominent third-party provider of demand management resources and a key contributor to another. In both instances he was responsible for designing and implementing complex demand response/load management programs and related demand-side management solutions in new and existing markets. Tyno recently completed his third term as chairman of the Peak Load Management Alliance. He is a registered party (on behalf of the BNMC) and active participant in the New York REV Proceeding invited to sit on the Market Design and Platform Technology working group.

Trevor Wilkins and Logan Cohen co-founded KÜDZOO with the mission to connect the high mobile usage among millennials and the need for engagement in and out of the classroom. KÜDZOO works to close the opportunity gap in a fun yet challenging way. KÜDZOO was inducted into Princeton University’s Alumni Entrepreneurial Fund. Wilkins and Cohen were named Forbes 30 Under 30 in Education in 2016. EdSurge has named KÜDZOO a “tool builder” and “grade-based Bitcoin.” Through KÜDZOO, they see not only an innovative way to recognize student achievers, but a path to build a community-wide engagement for education. Graduating with a degree in sociology from Princeton University, Wilkins focuses on the use of technology to enhance the connection between success in the classroom and real life rewards. He is a Jefferson Award recipient and was named to JET Magazines 40 under 40 of 2015. Trevor was named Forbes 30 Under 30 in education for the class of 2016. Cohen received dual degrees in finance and international business from Florida International University. She focuses on user acquisition, application design and functionality to engage users and brands. She was named Forbes 30 Under 30 in education for the class of 2016.
Antonia (Toni) Yuille Williams is the Director of Public Affairs-Brooklyn for Con Edison Company of New York. Her responsibilities include external affairs: community outreach, corporate affairs, relationship management, reputation management, strategic giving, employee communications, volunteerism and special events. Williams is civically engaged in many community organizations. Currently she is on the boards of the Brooklyn Public Library, Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, The Brooklyn Arts Council, BRIC Arts Media Brooklyn, The Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, New York City Technical College Foundation Board and The Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College. She was also appointed to former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s panel on the role of Brooklyn in the 19th century abolitionist movement. She is a member of the Brooklyn Chapter of the Links, where she was the former first vice president, and is the former first vice president of Jack & Jill of America Brooklyn Chapter.
