Joe Doolan

Head of Environmental Affairs TD Bank Joe Doolan is head of environmental affairs for TD Bank. In this role, Doolan leads TD’s environmental initiatives, working closely with executives and business partners, as well as the bank’s U.S. employee base, to embed environmental health and wellness into TD’s business operations. With more than a decade of financial services experience, Doolan understands the important role environmental responsibility plays in driving profits. Prior to his role as head of environmental affairs, Doolan held a variety of roles within TD Bank, including retail market manager and store manager in the greater New York City area. Doolan has held multiple roles in other financial services industries before joining TD in 2007. Doolan has had the opportunity to sit on the boards of numerous community organizations across New York City. He holds a master’s degree in business administration from Hofstra University and a bachelor’s degree in human resource management from Binghamton University.

Kathryn Garcia Commissioner New York City Department of Sanitation

Appointed in March 2014 by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia leads the nation’s largest municipal waste management agency and its 9,700 uniformed and civilian employees. Under her direction, they keep New York City healthy, safe and clean by collecting, recycling and disposing of waste, cleaning streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. After her appointment, Garcia set an ambitious long-term goal for New York City: contribute zero waste to landfills. By efficiently leveraging the agency’s annual $1.4 billion budget, the department disposes of more than 3.2 million tons of refuse each year, recycles more than 600,000 tons of material – and is expanding its programs to make our city more sustainable. Previously, she served as chief operating officer at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. Garcia earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Vincent Sapienza

Acting Commissioner New York City Department of Environmental Protection Since joining the New York City Department of Environmental Protection in 1983, Vincent Sapienza has dedicated his career to protecting and improving New York City’s critical water infrastructure. Prior to his current role as acting commissioner, Sapienza served as deputy commissioner for the department’s Bureau of Engineering Design and Construction, where he managed the city’s water and wastewater capital improvement programs, including the construction of the $3.2 billion Croton Water Filtration Plant in the Bronx. He has also served as deputy commissioner of the department’s Bureau of Wastewater Treatment, where he oversaw the collection and treatment of wastewater for New York City and led the effort to create the New York City Wastewater Resiliency Plan. Sapienza began serving as the acting commissioner of the DEP on July 1, 2016. Sapienza is a New York state licensed professional engineer and holds a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and an master’s degree in business administration from Hofstra University’s School of Business.

Mark Chambers

Director New York City Mayor’s Office of Sustainability Mark Chambers is an urbanist, an architect, and the director of sustainability for Mayor Bill de Blasio and the city of New York. In this role, he leads the development of policies and programs that enhance the near-term and long-term sustainability of New York City, as outlined in One New York: The Plan for a Strong and Just City. Most recently, Chambers served as the director of sustainability and energy for the government of the District of Columbia, where he led an interdisciplinary team to creatively manage energy supply and demand, as well as water and waste resource conservation efforts across the district’s municipal portfolio of buildings and properties. He holds a graduate degree in public policy and management and an undergraduate degree in architecture, both from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He lives in Washington Heights with his wife and two children.

Kurt H. Becker

Vice Dean for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship New York University Tandon School of Engineering​ A physicist by training, Kurt Becker’s research focuses on low-temperature plasmas and their technological exploitation. He holds numerous patents on the stabilization of atmospheric pressure plasmas. At the New York University Tandon School of Engineering, Becker promotes faculty research that forms the basis for new technologies. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and was named to the National Academy of Inventors’ board of directors last year. He is a recipient of the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award from the Research and Development Council of New Jersey as well as the SASP Erwin Schrödinger medal of the University of Innsbruck. Proudest Achievement: To be able to work with faculty, students a​nd​staff at NYU Tandon o ​ n​innovative technologies in service to society​, especially as they impact climate change, energy efficiency, and clean and renewable energy.


Michael Bobker Executive Director CUNY Building Performance Lab

Michael Bobker founded the CUNY Building Performance Lab in 2006. The lab plays a critical role in supporting the sustainability of the built environment by improving energy efficiency in existing commercial and public real estate implemented through applied research, building staff training and practice-based education and internships. The lab runs an internship program that has trained more than 100 CUNY students for careers in building systems, energy management and property services. Bobker has more than three decades of experience working on a wide range of technology engagements with energy systems in city buildings. Proudest Achievement: To have been able to create, inside New York City’s public university, an institutional center and base for the examination and improvement of building performance.

Jo Brett U.S. President Pret A Manger

As its U.S. president, Jo Brett oversees 76 Pret A Manger stores, which serve freshly prepared sandwiches, salads and wraps made with preservative-free, ethically sourced ingredients. Brett is responsible for upholding high standards of environmental stewardship throughout the company’s supply chain and carrying out the organizational commitment to sustainable farming while reducing energy consumption and improving waste practices and animal welfare. Offering its customers a balanced range of natural and nutritious foods is another core organizational value. In New York, Pret partners with City Harvest to provide over 600,000 meals to the hungry every year. Proudest Achievement: I am very proud and grateful that this year marks my 20th year at Pret, having started as an assistant manager in London and working up to my current role as U.S. president.


Bright Power provides practical and cost-effective energy solutions to building owners and operators in New York and across the nation. The firm has worked on more than 19,000 buildings throughout the country, conducting energy audits as well as designing and managing the implementation of energy efficiency improvements. Bright Power specializes in multifamily apartment buildings, offering a suite of ongoing managed services designed to save clients energy, money and time. The firm’s energy management solutions include an energy scorecard, benchmarking software, energy audits, energy procurement, solar energy, fuel conversions, onsite generation, heating system upgrades and green building.

Stuart Brodsky

Director, Center for the Sustainable Built Environment New York University’s Schack Institute of Real Estate Stuart Brodsky directs the development and administration of the curriculum for green and sustainable buildings at New York University’s Schack Institute of Real Estate. Prior to joining the university, Brodsky was a senior member of General Electric Capital Real Estate’s Global Sustainability team, where he led the design and integration of sustainable practices for GE’s $80 billion investment portfolio. From 1999 to 2008, Brodsky led the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program, overseeing its adoption as the U.S. standard for tracking and rating the energy performance of commercial buildings. He also worked on the development of the Building Owners and Managers Association Energy Efficiency Program, among other initiatives. Proudest Achievement: Energy Star for commercial buildings.

Tria Case

University Director of Sustainability City University of New York Over the past decade, Tria Case has played a key role in the development and implementation of numerous public solar programs throughout New York state. At CUNY, she steers the university’s efforts to reduce its energy consumption. She secured funding for a $1 million revolving loan fund to support sustainability projects, and is currently working on addressing the soft costs of adopting solar. Case was previously the director of environmental business services at the Empire State Development Corp. Following Superstorm Sandy, she created the Smart Distributed Generation Hub to integrate distributed resources into emergency power and resiliency deployment. Proudest Achievement: Building the New York City Solar Roadmap and this month surpassing 100 megawatts of solar in NYC.

Sammy Chu Chief Innovation Officer Edgewise Energy

Sammy Chu is the chief innovation officer at Edgewise Energy, a Long Island clean technology startup focused on deploying next generation behind-the-meter distributed energy resources. A local leader in promoting market adoption of energy efficiency, Chu was the founding director of the town of Babylon’s Long Island Green Homes program, which was the first property assessed clean energy program in the country. A champion of inclusive, sustainable economic development, Chu was instrumental in creating workforce opportunities for individuals from traditionally underserved communities during the planning of the Wyandanch Rising development, a seminal Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design neighborhood development project. Proudest Achievement: I’m proud to have contributed to the creation of PACE financing.


Ellen Friedman Partner Nixon Peabody

As co-leader of Nixon Peabody’s energy and infrastructure projects team, Ellen Friedman is responsible for the development and financing of energy and infrastructure projects, particularly in renewable energy, where she works with lenders, tax equity investors and developers of clean, efficient and sustainable energy resources. Friedman is currently advising the New York Green Bank on the development and implementation of numerous green initiatives and financing programs throughout the state. In 2016, her work was recognized by the Energy and Natural Resources Expert Guide and the Guide to the World’s Leading Women in Business Law, among other publications. Proudest Achievement: Helping clients to create long-lived, clean and efficient energy generation.

A pioneer in the field of urban agriculture, Gotham Greens has built and operates more than 170,000 square feet of urban greenhouses in New York and Chicago. Its pesticide-free produce is grown using ecologically sustainable methods, such as solarpowered rooftop greenhouses. Its recirculating hydroponic methods save land and water while eliminating agricultural runoff and chemical pesticides. The proximity of greenhouses to the market reduce emissions related to transportation. By reconnecting people to the food chain, the company seeks to act as positive manifestation of urban revival, economic development, environmental education, wellness education and community building.

Ja Kao

President Onyx Renewable Partners Ja Kao is president of Onyx Renewable Partners, a renewable energy development company established with funds managed by Blackstone Energy Partners, focused on greenfield development and mergers and acquisition opportunities in the North American solar and wind sectors. Prior to joining Onyx, Kao was a managing director at Blackstone Advisory Partners, where she led the renewable energy investment banking practice, covering wind, solar and other technology companies. In that role, Kao structured many tax equity financing transactions for major solar and wind projects. She serves on the board of directors of the American Council On Renewable Energy.


Nick Knapp

Managing Director CohnReznick Capital Markets Securities LLC Nick Knapp specializes in structuring and negotiating tax equity investments, with a focus on wind and solar projects. He has served as a financial adviser on more than 50 structured equity and lease transaction closings in the renewable energy industry – with projects ranging in size from 5 megawatts to 500 megawatts – as well as lead mergers and acquisitions adviser for solar and wind portfolios. Knapp was previously a transaction adviser at General Electric Energy Financial Services, focusing primarily on renewable energy investments. He has also worked in KPMG’s New York office, where he provided clients with business due diligence in the renewable energy and real estate industries. Proudest Achievement: Bringing about a dozen first-time institutional tax equity investors into the renewable energy market to allow for solar and wind projects to be constructed, which otherwise would not have happened but for these specific investors.

Jessica Lappin President Alliance for Downtown New York

Jessica Lappin is the president of the Alliance for Downtown New York, an organization that manages New York City’s largest business improvement district and provides service, advocacy, research and information to advance lower Manhattan as a model 21st century central business district. She has successfully advocated for incentives to improve the business climate, expanded free public Wi-Fi, instituted a solar-powered recycling program and secured nearly $15 million in resiliency funding. Lappin previously served two terms in the New York City Council, where she worked to expand recycling efforts and spearheaded the development of four new waterfront parks. Proudest Achievement: Committing myself to making New York a better and easier place for people to live and do businesses.

Mark M. MacCracken CEO CALMAC

Mark M. MacCracken is the CEO of CALMAC, one of the largest manufacturers of thermal energy storage equipment in the world, with more than 4,000 installations in 60 countries. In four decades at the firm, MacCracken has assisted in the design of hundreds of systems that create ice at night to cool buildings during the day. Recent installations in New York City include: Rockefeller Center, Google, Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and the Bank of America Tower. MacCracken was the principal investigator on research projects with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, NASA and National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Proudest Achievement: Being elected chairman of U.S. Green Building Council’s board of directors by my peers in sustainability.

Patricia Malone

Executive Director, Center for Corporate Education Stony Brook University Patricia Malone is the executive director of the Center for Corporate Education at Stony Brook University. She has facilitated numerous forums – including three with the U.S. Department of Labor for Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development grants as well as New York state Energy Research and Development Authority focus groups – on skill gaps, transitional professionals and emerging clean energy jobs, as well as the university’s role in workforce and economic development. Malone has also conducted clean energy, manufacturing and aerospace labor market intelligence and development projects for the New York state Department of Labor, New York state Energy Research and Development Authority and the governor’s regional economic development councils. Proudest Achievement: Creating the “From Wall Street and Beyond” Project Management Certification Program because it has assisted almost 2,000 professionals in transition due to the financial crisis.

Matthew R. Mahoney Vice President for External Affairs Suez North America

Matthew Mahoney is responsible for crafting the public policy and legislative agenda at Suez North America, a global environmental services company that operates 16 water and waste water utilities, as well as 90 municipal water and waste water systems, through public-private partnerships across the U.S. Mahoney is also responsible for maintaining relationships with stakeholders in the political, nonprofit and advocacy spheres. Prior to joining Suez North America, he was the associate commissioner for public affairs at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, Mayor Michael Bloomberg appointed Mahoney as the community recovery director for Manhattan. Proudest Achievement: Working in the mayor’s office during the 9/11 attacks and working at New York City Department of Environmental Protection during Superstorm Sandy.


Paul Meyer Senior Vice President WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff

Paul Meyer has more than 35 years of experience in the construction, operation and maintenance of major building systems, including building commissioning, energy auditing, energy modeling, sustainability and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design project administration. A former member of the Energy and Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group of the U.S. Green Building Council, Meyer has taught the LEED rating system at the Advanced Energy Center of Stony Brook University. Meyer has worked on more than 150 LEED registered projects, including several new construction platinum-level projects. He has also served as the co-chairman of the Advocacy Committee for the U.S. Green Building Council’s Long Island chapter. Proudest Achievement: I used to be deathly afraid of public speaking and when I was named an assistant professor at Farmingdale College, I knew my personal work overcoming that fear was worth it.

Les Neumann Managing Director and CEO iCANny

Les Neumann is the managing director and CEO of iCANny, a nonprofit New York state certified business incubator that supports entrepreneurs in the greater Hudson Valley, with the aim of accelerating the commercialization of new energy, financial or medical technologies. In recruiting a global cadre of experienced business executives, technologists and service providers, Neumann has bucked the traditional paradigm of geographically restricted incubation and acceleration, advancing his organization’s mission to facilitate the licensing of their innovations worldwide, while stimulating local investment, economic development and job creation. Neumann is a co-founder of iCLEAN, an incubation partnership recognized by the New York state Energy Research and Development Authority. Proudest Achievement: Being at the constant forefront of technology development.


Gil Quiniones President and CEO New York Power Authority

Gil Quiniones is responsible for developing and implementing the vision and mission of the nation’s largest state power organization. Prior to joining the New York Power Authority, Quiniones served as senior vice president of energy and telecommunications for the New York City Economic Development Corporation. He was also a co-founder of Con Edison Solutions, the utility’s unregulated energy services company. Quiniones is on the board of directors of the Electric Power Research Institute and the New York state Energy Research and Development Authority. He also served as co-chairman of the New York Energy Highway Task Force, which was charged with rejuvenating the state’s energy system. Proudest Achievement: Creating the momentum and infrastructure to provide sustainable and affordable energy, stewardship of natural resources and innovative technology to propel the use of renewables in alignment with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Reforming the Energy Vision.

John Rhodes

President and CEO New York State Energy Research and Development Authority John Rhodes was appointed president and CEO of the New York state Energy Research and Development Authority in 2013. Prior to entering government, he served as the director of the Center for Market Innovation at the Natural Resources Defense Council. Rhodes also spent three years as chief operating officer at Good Energies, an investment firm focused on renewable energy and energy efficiency. He serves on boards of several nonprofit organizations, including the Alliance to Save Energy, Urban Green Council, New York Institute for Special Education and American Federation for Aging Research. Proudest Achievement: Driving nation-leading initiatives such as NY-Sun, New York Green Bank, the Clean Energy Fund, the Clean Energy Standard and an offshore wind strategy.


Dana Schneider

Managing Director, Energy and Sustainability Services Jones Lang LaSalle Inc. Dana Schneider is an expert in energy performance optimization, focusing on the development and implementation of energy and sustainability programs for a broad range of clients and project types. She has led assignments on more than 80 million square feet of properties in the Northeast alone, including the energy retrofit of the Empire State Building, which received a LEED Gold for exisitng buildings certification in 2011. Schneider serves as a technical resource expert for the Clinton Climate Initiative’s Climate Positive Development Program and has served as a member of the Real Estate Roundtable Sustainability Policy Advisory Committee and the Real Estate Board of New York’s Sustainability Committee. Proudest Achievement: My energy and sustainability work at the Empire State Building. Having the opportunity to lead the continuing energy efficiency and sustainability work in my favorite building in the world has truly been a dream come true.

Camilla Seth

Executive Director, Sustainable Finance JPMorgan Chase & Co. At JPMorgan Chase & Co., Camilla Seth focuses on conservation finance, stakeholder engagement, external partnerships and policy development. She is the executive director of the sustainable finance group and manages the firm’s partnership with The Nature Conservancy. Previously, Seth was the founding director of programs and operations at the Global Impact Investing Network, organizing institutional investors around collaborative investment. She also served as vice president of environmental affairs at Citigroup, where she managed environmental initiatives across the investment bank and directed global environmental philanthropy. Seth has also managed climate change and biodiversity protection initiatives for the Surdna Foundation. Proudest Achievement: I am very proud of helping to create NatureVest. Being able to imagine, design and then help guide the development of this platform for channeling private capital toward conservation is extremely gratifying.

Daniel A. Spitzer Partner Hodgson Russ LLP

Daniel Spitzer practices environmental, land use and municipal law, with a focus on renewable energy, sustainable development and real estate development. In representing municipalities, investors, developers, landowners and financing entities, Spitzer has worked on numerous wind farms, solar projects, landfill gas to energy, geothermal, biomass, storage and energy efficiency projects. He has successfully litigated environmental and renewable energy cases, including a case of first impression upholding a municipality’s right to regulate power generating facilities based on greenhouse gas emissions. Spitzer speaks and writes extensively on energy topics, including renewable energy, green building and other clean technology industries. Proudest Achievement: Helping an impoverished rural community prevent a massive regional landfill from being sited in their community.


Mari Jo Winkler

Chairwoman and Co-founder Producers Guild of America East’s Green Committee Mari Jo Winkler is a co-founder and chairwoman of the Producers Guild of America East’s Green Committee, which promotes sustainable practices in film and television production. She helps maintain a website providing information on best practices and tools for sustainable production, in addition to volunteering with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment as a consultant to recruit films and television shows to participate in the New York City Film Green sustainability designation program. Winkler has served as a production manager on numerous films, including “Dan in Real Life,” “Catch Me If You Can” and “Cold Mountain.” Proudest Achievement: Trekking to advanced base camp at 21,000 feet on Mount Everest in Tibet on a film scout.

Richard C. Yancey Executive Director Building Energy Exchange

Richard C. Yancey is the founding executive director of the Building Energy Exchange, an independent nonprofit organization that connects the New York real estate and design communities to energy and lighting efficiency solutions through education, exhibitions, technology demonstrations and research. He has more than two decades of experience as a practicing architect in Seattle and New York, leading a wide range of award-winning commercial, institutional and residential projects. Yancey was named a Top Ten New York Energy Entrepreneur in 2015 and Top Ten Clean Tech Leader of New York in 2013 by Breaking Energy. He also served on the New York City mayor’s Climate Action Plan Technical Working Group. Proudest Achievement: Opening the Building Energy Exchange, New York’s first and only center of excellence dedicated to building energy efficiency, and working with amazing people to cut greenhouse gas emissions from New York City’s buildings.
