QUICK FACTS • Harbour Pool would remain in use if a new aquatic facility was built at the DCC. • Construction cost of a new pool is estimated at $35 million in 2017 dollars. • Operation costs including paying off the debenture debt over 20 years are estimated at $4.1 million annually in 2017 dollars. • Timeline to build if approved by Council is 2018 – 2021

October 16, 2017 Do you support building a new aquatic facility at the Dow Centennial Centre? The Recreation and Parks Master Plan Update in 2015 identified a new pool for spontaneous uses such as warm pools, slides and water play features was desired by the public. During the municipal election vote you can let Council know if you support a new pool. Information about the question and the proposed project can be found on fortsask.ca/election. Information is also available at all City facilities.

Welcome to the 2017 FALL PROGRAM SEASON! MAYOR’S MESSAGE There are several reasons why I love being a Fort Saskatchewan resident but one that tops the list is the changing of the seasons. Fall is fast approaching and when the leaves turn I will take some time to stop and appreciate the wonder of it all. If lifestyle change tops your list of things to do this Fall, well then this Fall Leisure Guide will be perfect for you. It provides high quality recreation, art and culture programs to encourage individual and family wellbeing. From pre-school to senior there is something for everyone in our community. We believe that physical health and well-being are interconnected, and that active living is a key component of a thriving city. Each season we try to offer something new, yet at the same time continue offering the programs from past seasons that our residents love. Please take the time to look through and find an activity that interests you! Our recreation team is always interested in hearing from you. Your feedback is important to us so feel free to email your suggestions for new or improved services to rec@fortsask.ca. Gale Katchur

Front and back crawl skills are refined with a focus on breathing, hand positions and body roll while endurance is built to 75 metres. Swimmers will be introduced to elementary back stroke, ice safety and throwing assists.

SWIM KIDS 7

Swimmers continue to develop and build endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke. Skills that are introduced include breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entries. Endurance is built to 150 meters.

SWIM KIDS 8

All strokes are refined and endurance is built to 300 meters. Swimmers are introduced to breast stroke, feet-first surface dives, dangers of open water and rescue breathing.

SWIM KIDS 9

This level continues to refine all strokes while building endurance to 400 meters and encouraging fitness. Swimmers also work on head first surface dives and they learn about wise choices, peer influences and self rescues.

SWIM KIDS 10

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance. Endurance is built to 500 metres. Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others and further develop surface dives.

ANCESTRAL WINTER REMEDIES (14 YRS+)

Fall is the time to prep for winter like the proverbial ant or grasshopper, and our ancestors knew how to make like the ant! Being well-prepared for a long prairie winter in a time when there was no indoor heating, refrigeration, hospitals or antibiotics was literally a matter of survival. Putting away herbs and remedies to deal with colds, flus, and having effective strategies for winter ailments was almost as imperative as food, firewood and shelter. Explore what our great grandmothers would have done to doctor the family when in need. We will explore some of the old wisdom that we can still use today, and prepare some home remedies effective for keeping us healthy for winter! Fort Heritage Precinct NWMP Fort Program Space 29537 Sep 28 Thu, 6:00 – 8:30 pm Instructor: Dionne Jennings $40

We will be exploring the connection between the remedies of our ancestors and the herbal medicine we use today, and will learn how to bridge the old with the modern. Learn how to bring (and make!) some of Baba’s remedies into our modern day medicine cabinet that we can use for ourselves and our families.
