MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Winter’s arrival may tempt you to curl up on the couch with a good book, but remember, it is a great time to get out and get active. Fort Saskatchewan offers many opportunities for residents of all ages to stay active and engaged through both registered and drop-in programming. As you browse this guide, I’m sure you’ll find several options that catch your eye. It may be fitness, culture, or art classes, but there is something for everyone.

Our Culture and Recreation teams are always busy looking for new programs, and they’re always listening when you say you’ve enjoyed previous offerings. Of course, this Leisure Guide will also connect you with the many community groups who provide their own options for you to play, learn, and exercise. On behalf of City Council, I trust you’ll find Fort Saskatchewan in winter is still a great place to work, live, and play!”

FUSED PILATES YOGA Get the best of both worlds in this combination class. Fusing the toning benefits of Pilates with the flexibility benefits of yoga lets you enjoy a well-rounded wellness experience.

HATHA AT NOON The goal of practicing hatha yoga is to bring together opposites in your life and create balance. During hatha yoga, you use physical postures, or asanas, to align your body and allow energy to flow freely. You also learn breathing techniques, which also help regulate the flow of energy and enable you to master your mind and attain balance.

GENTLE HATHA In our busy society relaxation is seldom practiced yet is a wellness skill needed to combat stress on the mind and body. Slow progressive movement using modified yoga asanas suited for a wide range of abilities, flexibilities, and mobilities will make this class an enjoyable way to regain or build your strength, range of motion and balance. Gentle Hatha Yoga has many benefits to offer to both mind and body. Treat yourself to this class, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. Participants are asked to bring a blanket. No prior yoga experience is necessary.

MIND BODY FOR ATHLETES

YOGA FOR ATHLETES STRENGTHFLEXIBILITYBALANCE A stretch class focusing on breath awareness and range of motion to reduce risk of injury in sport.

PRENATAL YOGA Suitable for all stages of pregnancy. No prior yoga experience necessary. Build focus, strength, balance, flexibility, awareness of body-mind-spirit interconnectedness, and trust in your inner knowing that will serve you through pregnancy, labour, birth and beyond! Our prenatal yoga practice interweaves pranayama (breath), asanas (poses), meditation, and time to share our collective wisdom, so expectant moms can ease into the changes of pregnancy, feel prepared for labour and birth, and connect with others on the journey. Bring a water bottle, pillow and blanket. NOTE: A fun prenatal partner yoga practice (with practical applications for labour and birth) will be planned for one of the classes.

A balanced body can reduce the risk of injury in sport and leisure. This class will focus on range of motion, breath awareness and core stability.

What would our predecessors have done in the event of a teething baby, broken bone, or infection in the time before doctors? We will be exploring the connections between the remedies of our ancestors and the herbal medicine we use today, and we will learn how to bridge the old with the modern. Learn how to bring (and make!) some of Baba’s remedies into our modern day medicine cabinet that we can use for ourselves and our families.
