Meet Our Awesome Mascot

Auggie

It’s hard to resist a character as warm, wonderful, and woolly as Auggie—Fort Saskatchewan’s charming mascot. Auggie’s job is to make sure everyone who crosses his path feels that they are part of the Fort Saskatchewan flock. No matter how big or small you are, feel free to give this cuddly sheep a friendly hug or high five (or three). Auggie’s full name is Augustus, after Fort Augustus, the North West Company fur

trading post built here in 1795. He’s a natural choice to link Fort Saskatchewan’s lively past with our vibrant present. Don’t ewe agree? Look for Auggie’s guest appearances at events throughout the year, including the Fort Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce Trade Show & Sale, Legacy Park Family Festival, Canada Day Celebrations, the Farmers’ Market, Co-op’s Movie Under the Stars, Neighbour Day and the Santa Claus Parade.

Follow Auggie (@AuggieFtSk) on Twitter to learn about events in Fort Saskatchewan. You can invite Auggie to your special event by calling the Sheep Hotline: 780.992.6261. 8

Sheep Grazing

Our Best-Loved City Sheep

Join the Finnsheep Flock! Hours: 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Thursday to Sunday, and statutory holidays, from June 6 to September 7, 2015. Subject to change without notice

Locations: The area next to Legacy Park (100 Avenue and 101 Street),

Our city's eco-friendly lawn mowers are the centre of attention from June through September. People come from around the globe to mingle with the sheep as they do what comes naturally. Now world famous, the flock had humble beginnings back in 1992 as a certified work crew keeping the river valley parks space neat and trim. The sheep are an irresistible delight to Fort Saskatchewan residents and visitors alike. It’s quite the sight to see a shepherd in the city, herding the flock of about 50 warm, friendly, and fuzzy sheep. Border Collies work to help keep the flock together. 24

CULTURE

You’re welcome to come up close and meet the living lawnmowers. The quiet sheep love attention and you can expect the whole flock to surround you! The sheep keep park grass trim and neat, and their manure improves the soil. The friendly sheep symbolize the perfect mascot for Fort Saskatchewan— a community known for friendliness, warmth and hospitality. The animals always return to the farm healthy and well fed. In fact, the sheep thrive so well on park grass, they have to be loaded into two trailers to go home, though they fit in just one upon arrival!

At the Fort Heritage Precinct in Peter T. Ream Historic Park (100 Avenue and 101 Street), Around the Rotary Amphitheatre in the river valley.

Don’t Miss This Wonderful Start to a Season of Delight!

There’s nothing like a wintertime parade to kick off the festive holiday season!

Every November, Santa joins the array of colourful floats making their way through the downtown core, happy to greet the many excited children and photo-snapping adults. Previous years have seen more than 1,000 spectators and nearly 40 parade entries. Watch out for the Mayor, dressed in costume and of course, Auggie—Fort Saskatchewan’s beloved City mascot.

Remember to bring your letter for Santa! Volunteers of the Chamber of Commerce walk the parade route to collect the letters, which they deliver to Santa so he can personally answer each one. Be sure to return Santa’s cheerful wave and collect some candy, then follow the sound of sleigh bells through downtown starting at 99th Avenue at 108th Street and winds through the city centre. Join jolly Santa Claus and his hard-working elves at this celebration of a most magical season. It’s a charming start to this season of delight!

Experience History Up Close! Discover our history at the Fort Heritage Precinct. Enjoy the view as you walk through a picturesque historic village and North West Mounted Police (NWMP) Fort located on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. Our site features eight heritage buildings and the 1875-1885 NWMP Fort that are filled with period pieces to delight and intrigue you.

Tidbits of Life at the Fort: • The government of the North West Territories paid the NWMP 75 cents/day for prisoner maintenance. • The first hanging in the North-West Territories occurred on December 20, 1879 in Fort Saskatchewan. • Between 1916 and 1960, there were 29 hangings at the Provincial Gaol in Fort Saskatchewan • The Mounties were active athletes, competing on both NWMP and civilian teams. Mounties played cricket, tennis, football, hockey, baseball, and rugby. The fiercest competition was between the men at Fort Saskatchewan and the men stationed in Edmonton. • The 275 men of the NWMP took with them on the March West – 20 Métis Cart Drivers, 114 Red River Carts, 67 Wagons, 311 Horses, 124 Oxen, 18 Bulls, 52 Cows and 40 Calves. • The NWMP were more than just policemen. They were lawyers, prison guards, blacksmiths, carpenters, farriers, veterinarians, doctors, post masters, and fire fighters. • When Reveille was played, you could hear the NWMP singing ‘Charlie, Charlie, get up and dress yourself. Charlie, Charlie, get up.’ • During one patrol, A.M. Jarvis travelled 3,218 km going from Fort Saskatchewan to Fort Resolution and back. He traveled mostly by dogsled. 42

CULTURE

Prepare to realize the impact the North West Mounted Police had on Canadian identity and western development as you wander through the interactive exhibit. Downtown Public Art Breathing Creativity into the Heart of the Community

Mural The Mural depicts the story of a fort on the North Saskatchewan River beginning with Aboriginal peoples, explorers, and fur traders. By 1875, the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) built a fort which came to be called Fort Saskatchewan. Settlers followed and stayed to establish commerce, trade, and industry

Olive Over twenty years of the wildly popular sheep grazing program in Fort Saskatchewan is now enshrined in a bronze sheep statue fondly named “Olive” after the longest serving member of the grazing crew who retired to farm life after the 2012 season.

Inspector Jarvis The life-sized bronze statue of Inspector Jarvis is located at the Fort Heritage Precinct overlooking the 1875-1885 North West Mounted Police Fort. Inspector Jarvis was to find the perfect spot for a new NWMP Fort and he chose a site about 30 kilometres downstream of Fort Edmonton. The fort, originally named Sturgeon Creek Post, was soon changed to Fort Saskatchewan.

The Babysitter - Mountie & Muriel There is nothing more fun than watching a sheep dog at work. The Babysitter statue celebrates the sheep dog doing his job. The sheep dog was named Mountie because he keeps all of the sheep in line, just like the NWMP. The lamb is named Muriel for two reason. One, because Muriel is Celtic for sweet and adorable and two, because she is named for the first female mayor of Fort Saskatchewan. 48

Our Historic River Valley

Our Historic River Valley In 1913, the same year ‘G’ Division was transferred to Edmonton, the Alberta Government began to build a gaol (jail) in Fort Saskatchewan. It was used to hold criminals sentenced to two years less a day, as well as prisoners awaiting trial. Between 1916 and 1960, 29 prisoners were executed here. The prison operated an 800 acre farm to grow the inmates’ food, a gymnasium to maintain fitness, and carpentry, autobody and license plate shops.

The City of Fort Saskatchewan entered history well over 200 years ago with its original industry of canoe building. Near the mouth of the Sturgeon River was an ideal location for raw materials and the First Nations people named the area "Birch Hills."

fort quickly changed to Fort Saskatchewan and although the railway’s plans changed, the fort positioned the community as a key northern police garrison. During the 1885 Riel Rebellion, the Seventh Company of the 65th Montreal Rifles protected the fort. The police fort was enlarged to become ‘G’ Division headquarters, but in 1913, the division was transferred to Edmonton.

In the late 1700’s, the North West Company and Hudson’s Bay Company arrived in the area that came to be Fort Saskatchewan. They established fur trading posts but by the early 1800’s, the fur trade was no longer profitable. The North West Company and Hudson’s Bay Company relocated to Edmonton, eventually merging as one company in 1821. In 1874, the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) arrived here after a grueling march across the prairies. Led by Inspector W.D. Jarvis, 19 men of ‘A’ Division wintered at Fort Edmonton. In the spring of 1875, Jarvis looked for a strategic down-stream location to build a NWMP fort and thinking the railway would cross the river here, built Sturgeon Creek Post where modern-day Fort Saskatchewan is located. a place to locate its nickel refinery in the early 1950s. Alberta’s natural gas deposits, needed for the ammonia leach process, was also a factor in attracting this company to the area. The community grew even more and welcomed additional industries after Sherritt Gordon Mines moved here in 1954.

Old Gaol

One of Alberta's oldest Euro-Canadian communities, the settlement grew and became an agricultural distribution centre for the region. In 1904, Fort Saskatchewan became a town. Travelers to and from Edmonton had to make their way along a rough dirt trail that snaked around swamps and woods until the much celebrated 1905 arrival of the Canadian Northern Railway. The railway station was built near the town centre, near several grain elevators and a stockyard. In 1911, an addition was built on its west side to accommodate the community’s growing population and it became a significant stop on the transcontinental line from the east and an important transportation hub for this fertile farming district. It served Fort Saskatchewan until the late 1980s.

The Courthouse at the Museum provides a structural reminder of the city's long tradition of law and order. It was constructed in 1909 as part of the government's ambitious program to develop the administrative and legal infrastructure of Alberta shortly after the province's creation. The courthouse originally heard both the criminal proceedings of prisoners from the Provincial Gaol and the disputes and issues of the local citizenry. The main floor also served as a residence for a member of the Alberta Provincial Police. 1909 Courthouse

Fort Saskatchewan Prairie Careful, Efficient & Friendly We are a professional, fully insured moving company with competitive rates and a hardworking crew.

One of Three Remaining Native Prairie Remnants in the Capital Region

Fort Saskatchewan Prairie, located in West River's Edge Park on the western edge of our city and bordering the south side of the North Saskatchewan River, is one of three remaining native prairie remnants in the Capital Region. The City of Fort Saskatchewan acquired this 13 hectare parcel of land to protect its natural heritage for the community and visitors to enjoy. The Prairie’s main entrance gate is located southwest of the Red Coat Landing boat launch, next to the West River’s Edge Wetlands Conservation Area. Thanks to a grant from BP Canada Energy, interpretive signs were added throughout this natural landscape to guide and educate visitors about the native plants and animals that still live here. One sign honours Dr. G. 77

H. Turner who was one of the first doctors here in early 1900. He was an avid botanist, finding and naming 10,000 different plants in the area. He dedicated his collection to the University of Alberta Herbarium for conservation. Botanists from the Edmonton Naturalization Group, have collected seeds from rare plants in Fort Saskatchewan Prairie to grow in their nursery and to help preserve the species. While walking in the Fort Saskatchewan Prairie, you might come across deer, porcupine, skunks or a moose. Several kinds of birds come through on migration and nest here either in the trees or on the ground. To protect this natural preserve, only foot traffic is permitted. Also there are no campfires allowed and dogs must be kept on a leash.
