This issue is, as always, dedicated to sustainability, going green, being ecoconscious and making ethical choices. There’s lots of noise surrounding this huge issue, so we’ve attempted to quell the overwhelm you may feel by filling our pages with brands committed to improving the planet for future generations. From the companies we rely on to feed our families, to schools using electric buses to ferry pupils from A to B, we’ve found plenty of green choices for you. On this, the range of eco-friendly period products now available is remarkable. If you’re keen to cut waste, removing your contribution to the 200,000 tonnes of menstrual waste products disposed of each year is a great place to start. See The Knowledge on p52.

In education, we take a look at international schools and why they could work for your family (p29) and we speak to Rosey Davidson, a.k.a. Just Chill Baby Sleep about her latest book. Our Spring issue always takes in things to do at Easter, and you could do a lot worse than to try Jo Pratt’s chocolate treats. Bon appétit!

As a parent, I know I have spent a lot of time over the years questioning the amount of chocolate I should let my children eat. However, the one time of year I ease up on the rules is Easter. Embrace chocolate and have fun with the kids making these super easy chocolate treats.

Chocolate Crackle Eggs

This classic recipe is ideal for cutting into egg shapes for Easter and decorating with colourful icing pens or sprinkles. Don’t worry if you don’t have egg shaped cookie cutters, simply cut out a template with a piece of card and cut out shapes using a knife.

100g unsalted butter

100g dark chocolate, 70% cocoa solids

100g marshmallows

150g Rice Krispies

Egg-shaped cookie cutters

Icing pen to decorate

MAKES 10-12 depending on the size of your cutters

1. Line the base and sides of a deep baking tray, about 22x30cm with non-stick parchment.

2. Put the butter, chocolate and marshmallows in a large wide saucepan and melt everything together over a low heat, stirring occasionally until you have a smooth, sticky chocolate mixture.

3. Remove the pan from the heat and add the Rice Krispies, stirring until they are completely coated.

4. Spoon into the baking tin, then press into the edges and flatten on top with the back of a spoon. Set aside for about 1 hour to set.

5. Using your egg-shaped cookie cutters cut as many shapes as you can (the trimmings are a nice treat to nibble on whilst you decorate the eggs!).

6. Use the icing pens and be as creative as you like making your chocolate crackle eggs look fun and colourful for Easter.

16 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK FOOD BY JO PRATT

Cheeky Choccy Egg Pots

These are super rich so serving in small pots is a must!

125g dark chocolate, 70% solids

150ml double cream

150ml ready-made custard

Finely grated zest ½ orange (optional)

Approx. 100g chocolate mini eggs

6 espresso cups or egg cups

MAKES 6

1. Break the chocolate into small pieces and put in a small heatproof bowl. Rest the bowl over a pan of gently simmering water, so that the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water. Stir occasionally until the chocolate has melted. Alternatively, you can gently melt the chocolate in the microwave, stirring once or twice, until all the chocolate has melted. Set aside and leave to cool for about 10 minutes.

2. In a separate larger bowl, whisk the cream until it just starts to form soft peaks, then fold in the custard. Add the melted chocolate and gently fold everything together until you have a smooth mousse consistency.

3. Pop a mini egg in the base of each espresso or egg cups as a little surprise when you eat them, and spoon or pipe the chocolate mousse on top. You can now serve these straight away whilst they are super soft and fluffy, or alternatively, you can pop them in the fridge to chill for at least 30 minutes for the chocolate to firm up.

4. Before serving decorate with more mini eggs on top.

Creative Thinking

SOPHIE CLOWES TELLS US WHY CREATIVITY MATTERS TO OUR CHILDREN, AND TO US.

or a joke. Really, creativity is just an outward expression of an inner feeling. Which, effectively, makes it a form of therapy with benefits.

In an attempt to codify creativity, James Kaufman, an American Professor of Educational psychology, has introduced the four C model. We all fit into one of four levels, ranging from mini-c where levels of creativity are kept personal, through little-c, to Pro-c where creativity is part of people’s paid work, to Big-C folk who are eminent creatives in their given field.

We have more wonky bowls, plates, jugs and mugs in our house than uniform ones. None of them can go in the dishwasher, they don’t stack neatly and, frankly, they’re all a little amateur. This is because they are handmade, mostly by me, but also by other family members, none of whom has much talent nor technique when it comes to clay. But oh what useful and joyful expressions of love they are - a beautiful reminder of time and place that we use every day.

Our wobbly tableware was born out of curiosity, a desire to learn a new skill, to become absorbed in a non-competitive actual-life activity that would (mostly) result in a tangible outcome. It was a laying down of tech and a non-competitive, non-graded, see-where-thisleads-us option that feels like an increasingly rare privilege for both us and our children. The biggest surprise takeaway was the connection and therapeutic effect.

Creativity, according to good old Wikipedia, is the forming of something new and valuable (I don’t think this is, in our case, referring to financial value…), either tangible, such as a painting, or intangible, for example, an idea

Are you familiar with Jon Batiste? He is the living, breathing, dancing, singing, sartorial and musical king of the Big-Cs. He is positively hopping with creative vibes and his artistry is magnetic. His creativity seems urgent and joyful, an authentic playfulness that is irrepressible and something that I look upon slack-jawed with wonder and appreciation. I am not, nor ever will be, a Big-C.

And here’s the glitch: our education system is mostly set up to be competitive, to produce A* students from the get-go, where academic achievement is prized above all else, with winor-lose sport taking the top slot outside the classroom. From birth, our children are set on a path of achievement that so often results in disappointment or burn-out. Their individual creativity is all-toooften stifled if they aren’t an obvious Big-C candidate.

At this year’s Brits, Michaela Coel warned, ‘I think it’s important to not assume that your formal education is going to give you the tools you need to be the creator you want to be.’

Whichever way we look we see that creativity is a source for good and something that we should practice regularly and often to help

our equilibrium. The Creative Act: A Way of Being is a Sunday Times bestseller by music producer Rick Rubin. Over the years Rubin has thought deeply about where creativity can be found. He suggests that, ‘being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.’ He believes that, ‘Creativity has a place in everyone’s life, and everyone can make that place larger. In fact,’ he goes on to say, ‘there are few more important responsibilities.’ In other words, we shouldn’t leave it as a cure to our ills but use it as a preventative measure.

For those who lay claim to having missed out on any creative gene at all, your protestations are in vain. Enter Dr Becky Kennedy, a clinical psychologist, mother of three and the creator of Good Inside, a wildly popular parenting forum. Dr Becky’s work is based on her knowledge of attachment, mindfulness, emotion regulation and Internal Family Systems theory. And it’s this last one which is of particular interest here.

This relatively new form of psychotherapy is an evidence-based practice that has been effectively used to treat, amongst other things, anxiety, low self-esteem, depression and, most effectively, eating disorders - a proliferation of problems that, sadly, are already showing up in primary school.

Internal Family Systems theory is based on the idea of the Self as an energy within each person that is the pure essence of who they are, and of internal ‘Parts’ which are ‘families’ forced into bad roles or painful feelings. The idea is to help clients access Self so that they can heal wounded Parts. Bear with me on this… Self is made up of eight identified characteristics, one of which is

- ta-dah - creativity, the others being: curiosity, calm, clarity, connectedness, confidence, courage and compassion.

Although this is a long explanation to just get at one mention of creativity, it is interesting that all the markers of Self go so neatly hand-in-hand. To be creative we need a little bit of confidence, we need compassion for when it goes wrong, we need courage to try again, we need to stay calm and be curious, have some clarity of purpose and remain connected to the creative task but also, hopefully, forge connection with our co-creators

So, the next time your inner critic tells you that you aren’t creative, you absolutely, categorically are. And it follows that it is psychologically healthy to exercise that creativity whenever and however you can. Creativity points us to the things that make us human and, also, to the things that make us as happy as we can be in circumstances outside our control.

Suleika Jaouad, a creative luminary, is a journalist, author, speaker and artist, and a lover of pranks. She is also the founder of The Isolation Journals, a creative community of over 100k which seeks to transform life’s interruptions into creative grist. “When you’re suffering… it can feel like you’re alone…Often the impulse in those moments is not to share or create but to hide.” But through much personal sorrow she has continued to create and to inspire. She is married to that Big-C maestro Jon Batiste!

This country’s love of creative TV shows proves that we already know the importance of the creative journey. Bake Off, Junior Bake-off, MasterChef, Junior MasterChef, Grand Designs, The Sewing Bee, All that Glitters, Handmade,

24 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
FEATURE

The Great Pottery Throw Down, the music talent shows, even Strictly… They all champion enthusiastic crafters and grafters. And what we become completely caught up in is, the journey, where their craft works as therapy and makes them understand themselves better and how, therefore, they can be happier.

Creativity is about looking deep within and pulling something of ourselves out, to be placed in the wild or safely with those closest to us. On a deeper, philosophical level, for small children it’s about stamping their very presence on the world and for adults it’s about leaving a tangible part of us in the world for when we are no longer alive, for our children and their children to know us by. But mostly, it’s about bringing joy, to ourselves as well as to others.

For Big-C creatives, their work just spills out of them. For others, it’s a little harder but the advice from every corner seems to be to encourage it out, not minding the result. Suleika Jaouad reckons that the playful act of fabrication is a kind of magical thinking that we’re trained out of as adults, but that is in some way contagious. And in a recent interview in The Times, the film visionary Baz Luhrmann cited the best advice he’d give as, ‘Don’t wait for permission to be creative.’

So how to get started?

With childlike enthusiasm. Many creatives, particularly writers, recommend The Artist’s Way - a relatively old book by Julia Cameron that demystifies the creative process, helping the reader discover and recover their

creative self. There is also The Artist’s Way for Parents , focusing on parents and their children, new-born through to age 12. According to Cameron, ‘Every child is creative - and every parent is creative. Your child requires joy, and exercising creativity, both independently and together, makes for a happy and fulfilling family life.’

Oliver Burkeman is a writer and advocate of Cameron’s Morning Pages where she suggests emptying your thoughts onto the page in a daily practice. Burkeman says, ‘There’s something transformative about achieving a third-person perspective on the contents of your mind by externalising them on paper.’ He thinks the value comes ‘from putting that whole control-focused, goal-achieving mental machine to one side for a bit.’ Similarly, the idea of a daily drawing, which can be provoked by a prompt such as suggested by Inktober. When it comes to our kids, do not seek perfection nor try to impose perfection on your child’s creative practice. Let them dream nonsense and escape the banality, effort and drudgery of the everyday.

A creative practice brings light relief to everybody, whatever their age and stage. Use it as prevention, or if you must, a cure to the darkness. Get your hands dirty, let your mind wander and don’t fixate on the finished result. Singing, table scaping, mangadrawing, gardening, writing, knitting, crocheting, baking, pickling, sketching, joke-telling are all good starting points. You could engage in the ultimate creative act and conjure up a new human. Or just get your wobble on at a pottery wheel for smashing results.

ARE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS ON YOUR RADAR?

VICTORIA EVANS FINDS OUT WHY A GLOBAL APPROACH COULD BE THE RIGHT CHOICE

As parents, we all want the best for our children and choosing schools is no easy decision. We want to give our kids the tools and opportunities they need to succeed in life; we want them to be happy, and if at all possible, we’d like to have some school parent friends on our wavelength! For some globe-trotting parents, an international school is an obvious choice, but increasingly, international schools are on the checklists of parents who are looking for a broader, more modern and inclusive education.

So why should you have a look? Let’s start with the most obvious reason.

An international school will give your

child exposure to different cultures. Your child will be surrounded by students from all over the world, giving them a unique opportunity to learn about different cultures, customs, and perspectives. This kind of exposure is invaluable in today’s globalised world, and it will help your child to become a more open-minded, tolerant, and understanding person.

Schools in the UK, and especially in London and the South-East are renowned for their world-class education, and international schools are no exception. They offer a curriculum that is based on the British system, but with a global perspective. This means that your child will receive a high-quality education that will prepare them for university and beyond. Some will also offer qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate and SATs.

Some international schools offer a completely bilingual education, which means that your child will be taught in both English and another language. This

is a great opportunity for your child to learn a new language and to become more proficient in it. Starting them young means a second language becomes second nature. They will probably never lose this skill which will reap dividends in the future, not only academically, but socially as well.

International schools offer a sense of community. Because the students come from so many different countries, they are all united by a common bond - the desire to make friends quickly, to learn and succeed. This in turn, creates a supportive and inclusive environment that is perfect for children to learn and grow in.

Finally, many international schools have unrivalled facilities such as sports stadia and extra-curricular activities that encourage your child to develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed during their school days and beyond.

We asked a range of international schools for their view on IB and the opportunities afforded by their pupils.

International schools provide an opportunity for students to meet peers from all over the globe. This promotes a school culture of open-mindedness and embracing diversity that contributes to a strong sense of community. International schools are open to everyone! From local families to families relocating from far-off destinations, international schools provide a welcoming atmosphere regardless of where a student comes from. IB is beneficial to students because it encourages the holistic development of the child. The IB learner profile is a child who is reflective, open-minded, inquisitive, caring, communicative, balanced, knowledgeable, principled, a thinker, and a risk-taker. Additionally, the flexible nature of the IB curriculum means that students can study a wider range of topics and have the autonomy to choose which subjects they wish to pursue more in-depth.

HEAD OF MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS AT TASIS

International schools can serve a mix of local and international students and families, regardless of nationality. The students are exposed to a multicultural environment, high-quality education and facilities, and an international curriculum. This enhances their opportunities for global networks and prepares them for university studies abroad.

In today’s global and interconnected world, schools and universities play a vital role in equipping students for their future as global citizens. International education has a lot to offer, including improved language skills, cultural awareness and understanding, impressive resumes for universities and future employers plus networking opportunities and global lifelong friends and connections.

RICHARD PARKER HEAD OF SCHOOL AT INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF LONDON

The strength of the IB curriculum is in the development of individual student enquiry and encouraging children, from a young age, to explore and understand concepts rather than learning by rote. This focus on self-motivation starts in the Primary Years Programme and allows students to follow their passions, best exemplified by the Middle Years personal project and the extended essay (4000-word research project) for the IB Diploma.

As an international school with many local as well as overseas students, our home language programme is coupled with a communications course for native English speakers to underscore the diversity and multiculturalism inherent in our school community.

CHRIS BEDDOWS HEAD AT DWIGHT SCHOOL LONDON

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is ahead of the game in terms of education throughout the world because it encourages students to think critically and solve complex problems by leading and engaging with their own learning and collaborating with others. An IB education opens doors to world class universities and continues to be valued, understood and recognised by more families who want their children to develop key life skills and be engaged and thoughtful learners, as opposed to recalling and memorising facts. At Dwight School London, our world class educators harness the IB to develop students who are culturally aware and able to engage with people in an increasingly globalised, rapidly changing world.

FRANÇOISE ZURBACH HEAD AT EIFA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

International schools are the ideal environment for an education open to global trends and evolutions. In particular, international schools offering a second language immersive curriculum, foster an education preparing children to the future. Mastering two or more languages is highly valued in the professional world. International studies also equip children to learn develop understanding and skills to

interact with other cultures. They become understanding and tolerant of others, and aware of the world in general whilst gaining self-confidence and a sense of responsibility towards self and others. Most children in the UK are introduced to a foreign language at nine and in many cases, their level will never reach a professional fluency level. Our experience with toddlers has re-enforced the idea that exposure to multiple language promotes cognitive listening, social interaction and adaptative skills in young children. The IB Diploma teaches students to ask challenging questions, to be culturally aware, to think critically and to learn in a flexible environment crossing national boundaries. The IB encourages pupils to deepen their interests and seek out what inspires them.

It is an excellent preparation to university studies with its multi layered approach to assessments including group work, coursework, practical work and a theory of knowledge essay that develops analytic and critical thinking.

CREATIVE AND DIGITAL ARTS CENTRE STAGE AT ACS HILLINGDON

With the video streaming industry booming, there has never been a better time for students to consider a career in film or the creative industries, as sites such as Netflix are on a continuous recruitment streak. Andy Groark, Digital Arts Course Leader at ACS International School Hillingdon tells us how ACS Hillingdon is championing a creative and digital curriculum and, in doing so, preparing students for a future full of opportunity.

CAN YOU GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF THE CREATIVE AND DIGITAL CURRICULUM AT ACS HILLINGDON?

ACS Hillingdon delivers success through its diverse and rigorous curriculum, offering students the only opportunity in the UK to study the International Baccalaureate (IB) Career-Related Programme (CP) focused in Digital Arts. Less than 45 UK schools offer the CP, with the majority focusing on business or engineering streams. Here, students learn about coding, animation, photography, 3D modelling, game design, visual effects, computer programming, and film making - all skills that are highly valued by today’s and tomorrow’s employers in the creative industries.

WHAT MAKES YOUR COURSES WORLD LEADING?

At ACS Hillingdon, apart from

accomplishing academic achievement, we harness personal wellbeing and develop a sense of global responsibility in every student. Above all else, we focus on enabling students to become lifelong learners. When you come to ACS Hillingdon, you don’t just leave with a qualification, you get a deeper understanding of the origins and the techniques that are embedded in your chosen specialism, as well as access to industry-standard facilities and experience opportunities not available in most, if any, schools. All this, combined with the fact we also work closely with globally recognised partners, ensures we have a unique offering that prepares students for whatever comes next in their lives.

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIPS STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM AT ACS HILLINGDON?

One partnership we are particularly proud of is our relationship with Creative Media Skills Institute which is based in Pinewood Studios - the location responsible for the production of box office hits including James Bond, Jurassic Park and Star Wars. When visiting Creative Media Skills Institute, our students learn specialist skills from the brightest brains in the industry and put them into practice within authentic learning workshops. In my experience,

there’s no one better placed to teach young people about the realities of the workplace than the people working in it already, and getting young people in a hands-on, industry-led environment such as this is vital for their development.

HOW DO THESE PARTNERSHIPS PREPARE YOUNG PEOPLE FOR THE EVER-CHANGING WORLD OF WORK?

Digital arts is a practical industry, and, it is critical that students who hope to secure jobs in this field are able to gain real-life experiences. So, while it’s important that they can rehearse and refine their skills in the classroom, they also need lots of opportunities to put them into practice and discover what the real possibilities and applications are, and what skills they might need to develop to get where they want to go. If we are to ensure students leave us as empowered individuals, with the academic and emotional intelligence to empathise and engage with tomorrow’s big issues, then learning authentically is key. It’s our aim that students at ACS Hillingdon are ready for challenges of the dynamic, everchanging world of the creative industries.

EDUCATION

INTRODUCING WETHERBY ARTS SCHOOL

Wetherby Arts School, a co-educational senior school for pupils aged 11-18, is opening in 2025 and taking enquiries now. Based in a 60,000 square foot performing arts educational space at Emberton House, Olympia, Wetherby Arts forms part of the £1.3 billion regeneration of the West London cultural and entertainment district.

Like other schools in the Wetherby group, Wetherby Arts will combine strong academics, pastoral care and outstanding facilities, with added emphasis on the performing arts. In addition to traditional subjects, a significant portion of the timetable will be devoted to the arts, without compromising on academic rigour. The school will support a wide range of arts-based GCSE and A-Level options, alongside vocational qualifications.

In a ground-breaking partnership with the BRIT School, Wetherby Arts will also widen access to the creative industries for children resident in the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

Outstanding Curriculum

Education and innovation go hand in hand at Wetherby Arts School. Passions and talents are nurtured, and pupils can develop and thrive both artistically and

academically. A creative approach to teaching will challenge pupils to achieve academic excellence as well as fostering an inclusive atmosphere where every pupil feels valued.

The school will offer a broad curriculum covering the core subjects of English, Maths, Science, Technology, Languages and the Humanities with pupils expected to take at least nine GCSEs before transition to A-Level and university. An extended day will help to provide a broader creative curriculum that is innovative and industry-focused, responding to the needs and skills gap of the growing and thriving creative industry, worth a £115 billion a year. Students will have dedicated entrepreneurship lessons and opportunities to produce and promote live performances, exhibitions, TV programmes, podcasts and other media.

Exceptional Facilities

In addition to a broad and exciting curriculum, state-of-the-art facilities will enable pupils to explore the visual arts; photography, film, art and digital media. From the specialist photography lab to a film studio and digital technology suite, resources will allow pupils to be at the cutting edge of visual design. In turn, qualifications in game design, media, art and photography will be available at

Wetherby Arts.

From behind the scenes to centre stage, music, drama, dance and musical theatre form the Performing Arts at Wetherby Arts. Pupils will learn in high-spec studios with access to a purpose-built theatre. Alongside GCSEs in Dance, Music and Drama, vocational qualifications in Music Technology, Theatre Technology and Musical Theatre will be on offer.

Enrichment

The activities and projects that envelop the curriculum are an essential part of the offer at Wetherby Arts. From Community Arts Projects that generate socially-focused artistic work, to a range of co-curricular clubs that encompass health and fitness, academic enrichment, charitable work and volunteering, societies and competitions, pupils will be engaged and busy!

Arts Afternoons are built into the school day, so that all pupils extend their knowledge and learning beyond lesson time, making best use of the exceptional facilities.

Furthermore, a new celebration of creativity and community - ArtsFest - will be hosted and developed by Wetherby Arts School. A week of exciting artistic projects will feature the talents of local residents and pupils.

The Arts in Context

Whilst not all pupils will choose to pursue a career in the arts, they will all benefit from the skills that are gained through studying the creative arts. Research has shown that creative learning can enhance wellbeing, improve health and increase happiness, whilst allowing pupils to develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills and the ability to interpret the world around them. Perhaps most importantly, the arts increase social awareness and responsibility, enabling pupils to become critically reflective members of society.

Registrations open in May 2023 for children in Alpha Plus schools and in June 2023 for all other pupils. 2025 entry will begin in Y7, Y9, Y10 and Y12. Entry will be by competitive examination on traditional exam subjects and by audition or portfolio.

PUPILS BREAK THE RULES FOR CHARITY

Pre-prep and prep pupils at Highfield and Brookham Schools raised £1,100 for charity after being allowed to break the rules! Wearing at home clothes, temporary tattoos, wigs and sparkly face paint in exchange for a small cash donation they raised the money for Liphook Food Bank and Highfield Highreach Holidays.

Highfield and Brookham have long fostered strong community links and the need for the food bank, which is based at Liphook Junior School on Avenue Close, is greater than ever with the current cost-of-living crisis, while Highreach Holidays provides a week-long break each summer for children with mental and physical disabilities.

Highfield Head Suzannah Cryer said: “We are incredibly proud of the associations we have with the local community and any time that we can give something back and lend a helping hand is treasured by all of us.”

ST BENEDICT’S CAMBRIDGE OFFERS

Three Sixth Form students at St Benedict’s School in Ealing have received conditional offers to study at Cambridge University. Alice Jenkins has an offer to study Medicine at Christ’s College; Thomas Gordon has an offer to study Engineering at Pembroke College, and Eleanor Bowden has an offer to read Anglo Saxon, Norse and Celtic at Fitzwilliam College.

The Headmaster at St Benedict’s, Andrew Johnson, said: “This is brilliant news and I offer my warmest congratulations to our successful Cambridge candidates. Not only have they demonstrated huge commitment to their chosen subjects, they have also made an outstanding contribution to the life of the school – as prefects, in the performing arts, and leaders of various activities - and I have no doubt they will all excel at university and beyond. I am also proud of our other students who were interviewed, and, indeed, all those who are working hard to gain places at other universities.”

ELECTRIC DREAMS AT DWIGHT

Dwight School London has launched an electric bus service as part of its ongoing mission to reduce its overall carbon footprint while also lowering operational costs. The switch from petrol buses to electric, will enable Dwight School London to reduce its annual carbon emissions from school transport by as much as 33%. The new electric bus route forms part of the school’s wider sustainability initiative, aligning with its Development Plan towards the reduction of scope 3 carbon emissions.

Chris Beddows, Head of the School, said: “We place innovation and sustainability at the heart of our school’s mission, vision and values. We are thrilled and immensely proud to be the first school in the whole of the United Kingdom to add this electric vehicle to our fleet of school buses and our whole community is excited by this new initiative. As a school who takes pride in taking action for the betterment of the world, the electric bus will help make the world a greener place and signify to our students that the climate is something that is hugely important to us as a school. The Zeelo electric bus was showcased to the students and there was a real buzz of excitement and interest which spilled back into the classrooms.”

SCHOOLS AWARDED FOR SUSTAINABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

BRIGHTON COLLEGE’S KENSINGTON MOVE

Brighton College and education provider Cognita are joining forces to establish a preparatory school in Kensington for boys and girls aged two to 13, opening in September 2023. The green campus, currently Princes

Garden’s Preparatory School, will be known as Brighton College Prep Kensington.

Brighton College, recently named ‘United Kingdom School of the Decade’ by The Sunday Times, has eight prep schools in the Brighton College family of schools, bringing significant experience established over almost two centuries. Brighton educates children from three to 18 and is consistently one of the highest achieving schools in the country.

This is the first time a leading independent school outside London has established a prep school in the capital. Richard Cairns, Head Master of Brighton College, believes that it offers something totally unique: “Brighton College has demonstrated that children can get superb results without hot housing, in an environment that values kindness and mutual respect above all else. Parents want their children to be curious, to be confident and, above all, to be kind. It is an approach that convinced The Sunday Times to name Brighton as its School of the Decade, and it is one we know will resonate with London parents. As we have shown in Singapore, we can also draw on the expertise and experience of Cognita, an

Period Power

Our guide to eco-friendly period products for tweens, teens and you!

It’s no secret that the small things we do on the daily can make a big difference to our planet. According to Global Citizen, tampons, panty liners and pads contribute to over 200,000 tonnes of waste. Choosing eco-friendly and sustainable period products will cut this figure, making a huge impact. A cup, reusable pants and washable pads are the way forward. All hail the companies on a mission to making these items the norm.

If you feel a bit ‘ick’ about the process and you want to dip your toe gently into this world, you can start with the pants as a safety net, giving you and your girls an extra layer of confidence. Most brands now cater for light, moderate or heavy flow, and have collections for tweens and teens. Their websites are also a mine of information on periods and sustainability.

Tell us about your new book

My book is a nurturing guide to the first year of baby sleep. It is designed to support and empower parents, covering every conceivable challenge they may encounter. I include practical methods, tips and straight forward, actionable advice.

Did you enjoy the writing process?

I wrote the book during the first year of my son’s life - he is the youngest of my three. So, the writing process was a juggle - three kids and a business to run! However, I really loved it. I felt like the book flowed out of me. It was already written in my head, I just had to get it down onto paper.

What is different about your approach to supporting parents?

I believe in flexible parenting. We need options, we need support, and we need to feel like we can find our own approach amongst the guidance. There really is something for everyone in my approach. There is no right or wrong when it comes to baby sleep, just what works for you.

How did you start your journey as a sleep consultant?

When my eldest child (age 10) wasn’t sleeping I needed something to change. I was in a desperate situation. I got some support from various avenues and brought it all together. It changed EVERYTHING. I knew I needed to help others in the same way, so I got a qualification, and the rest is history.

Can you remember your first clients and how it felt to help them?

I had already helped many friends and family, but my first ‘official’ paid clients felt

like a real milestone. There is nothing like someone telling you that you’ve changed their lives for the better.

What piece of advice would you give anyone desperate for a good night’s sleep? Keep it simple. Look at where baby sleeps, is there anything disturbing them? Look at routine - is baby sleeping too much, or not enough during the day? Look at how they settle - is this sustainable? Can you tweak something to get a more settled night?

Three words to describe yourself. Honest, practical, and determined.

Tell us one thing people don’t know about you

I had a short stint modelling nappies as a baby.

Where would your favourite date night be?

A trip to a spa followed by some gorgeous seafood and some bubbles.

Where’s the best place to take kids in London?

I love taking my kids to Granary Square at Kings Cross. Playing in the fountains when the weather is warm is so fun. Handyside Gardens Park and Camley Street Natural Park are also hidden gems. There are also so many lovely places to eat.

If you had 24 hours on your own what would you do?

I’d do some pilates, go for a walk, take myself out to lunch and visit a gallery.

Last book you read?

Three Women by Lisa Taddeo.

Signature dish?

My kids love my chicken pie. Can’t beat it.

What would you take to a desert island?

A comfortable roll out mattress, pillow, and eye mask. Good sleep is essential.

What’s your proudest moment?

Honestly, I am proud every day when I get messages from those who I have helped. There is nothing quite like it.

What’s next for Rosey Davidson?

Bringing good sleep to more people. Honestly, that is my ultimate goal. I don’t want anyone to feel tired, alone, and hopeless. Its is never too late, and you will sleep again.
