Well, well, well, who would have thought that we would still be here 10 years after creating our first edition of City Kids Magazine. When we started, there were no parenting apps, a few parenting websites and we were all only just getting started with Instagram.. Sadly, there were many more print magazines which have disappeared from the shelves over the last couple of years.

Building a magazine was a totally new path for me – I had never worked in publishing  –but I knew that there was a gap in the market for a magazine which talked to me; sharing all that London has to offer for families and giving me information on schools and nurseries in West London. Now, we cover London and the Home Counties and write about so much more: food, interiors, fashion, podcasts, holidays and lots of finds that we love.

We want to thank all those who have picked up the magazine and told us how much they’ve enjoyed our content. We also want to thank all the advertisers who have trusted us to share their campaigns. Without you, and your faith in us, we would not have survived massive rises in paper costs, a pandemic, or been able to grow like we have.

Loaded Sweet Potato Wedges

This is the most wonderful sharing platter for all the family or when you have a bunch of hungry kids to feed. It’s packed with flavour and super easy to put together. Gather round and tuck in.

PREPARATION TIME 20 minutes

COOKING TIME 55 minutes

SERVES 4

Vegetarian and gluten-free

1kg sweet potatoes

2 tsp smoked sweet paprika

3 tbsp olive oil

1 small red onion

Juice of 1 lime

1 tin beans, such as red kidney, black, borlotti or cannellini beans, drained and rinsed

75-100g grated mature cheddar cheese

1 large ripe avocado, peeled and diced

Handful of Sweetie Drop Peppers (I use Cooks& Co)

Handful sliced Jalapeños (optional)

200ml sour cream

Handful of coriander leaves

Lime wedges, to serve

1. Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7.

2. Cut the sweet potatoes into wedges and sit in a large roasting tray. Sprinkle over the smoked paprika and drizzle over the olive oil. Season with a good pinch of salt and toss around until the potatoes are coated in the oil. Roast in the oven for 50 minutes until they are golden and starting to crisp at the edges, turning a couple of times throughout for even cooking.

3. Meanwhile, thinly slice the red onion, put into a small bowl and mix with the lime juice and pinch of salt. Set aside for the onion to soften and mellow in the acidity of the lime.

4. As soon as the wedges are cooked, scatter the tinned beans and grated cheese over the top and return to the oven for a further 5 minutes or so for the beans to heat through and the cheese to melt.

5. Carefully transfer the roasted wedges, borlotti beans and cheese onto a large serving platter, unless the roasting tray is ‘table-friendly’ and if that’s the case, they can stay where they are. Scatter over the diced avocado, sweetie drop peppers, jalapeños and season with salt and a twist of freshly ground black pepper. Finish by spooning over dollops of sour cream, scattering over coriander leaves and arrange a few lime wedges on top.

Cherry Streusel Cake with CreamCherry

This irresistible cake is wonderfully straight forward to prepare and can be served as a dessert with the delicious cherry cream or enjoyed over a few days as a tea-time treat. Better still it is perfectly suitable to serve anyone who is gluten-free.

PREPARATION TIME 30 minutes

COOKING TIME 50 minutes

SERVES 8-10

Gluten-free

425g tin pitted black cherries

50g caster sugar

200ml double cream

1 tbsp kirsch, optional (cherry liqueur)

BASE

115g unsalted butter, soft

115g caster sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract or paste

3 large eggs

75g desiccated coconut

75g polenta

1 tsp baking powder (gluten-free if required)

STREUSEL TOPPING

85g porridge oats (gluten-free if required)

65g unsalted butter, diced

25g caster sugar

65g coconut flakes

1. Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with a piece of baking parchment.

2. Drain the cherries, reserving the liquid. Sit the drained cherries on a plate lined with some kitchen paper to absorb any excess liquid.

3. Put the cherry syrup in a wide saucepan with the 50g caster sugar. Bring to the boil and leave to reduce to a more syrupy consistency and you have about

100ml in quantity. Set aside and leave to completely cool.

4. For the base, beat together the butter, sugar and vanilla for a few minutes using an electric mixer until you have a light and fluffy consistency. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then beat in the desiccated coconut, polenta and baking powder. Spread the cake batter into the base of the prepared tin then scatter the cherries on top.

5. To make the streusel topping, put the oats, butter and caster sugar in a large bowl. Add the coconut flakes, crushing them in your hands as you add them, to break then into slightly smaller pieces. Rub

everything together with your fingertips to make a rough crumble mixture and scatter on top of the cherries. Put in the oven and bake for 50 minutes until nicely golden and the centre feels firm when lightly pressed.

6. Cool in the tin for about 30 minutes before serving warm or cool completely on a wire rack.

7. To make the cherry cream. Lightly whisk the double cream until it starts to form soft peaks. Stir the kirsch, if using, into the cooled cherry syrup, then fold this through the cream giving you a pretty pink cherry flavoured cream and serve with slices of the cherry streusel cake.

CHOOSING AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL IN LONDON

London is a haven for just about every global nationality. It’s one of the reasons why the capital is also home to a great variety of schools.

When it comes to truly international schools (ie those not teaching the National Curriculum for England), the large number of French families living in London means there is a particularly wide selection of French schools and many superb bilingual programmes on offer. The American curriculum is taught at several schools too. And if you are looking for the International Baccalaureate route, there are several London schools teaching parts of the programme or offering an IB diploma as an alternative graduating pathway alongside the French Bac or US high school diploma.

EDUCATION IN LONDON

The National Curriculum for England, or something very similar, is taught in nearly all mainstream state and private schools and is reliable, sound and well-known at home and abroad. To make matters even more appealing for the internationally minded, there are almost no schools in London that don’t have at least some children from overseaswhether temporary expats or permanent immigrants. The constant presence of children coming from or heading off to foreign schools means there is a degree of flexibility in the culture and a blurring of the lines between international schools and not-international schools.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS

The truly international schools in London are those that carry official accreditation and teach different curricula and systems. Most have some degree of academic selection for applicants and all are private (and therefore charge fees) representing a small but important feature of London’s private school eco system. Beyond these, most private schools in the capital (and elsewhere in the UK) have a broadly international ethos. A handful may describe themselves as ‘international’ but tend to be just another posh London prep school teaching something akin to the National Curriculum and the syllabus for the Common Entrance exam, albeit with a high proportion of international pupils.

The proportion of expats in London private schools varies enormously but it is rare to find a popular school in central London without at least two or three expats or dual nationality students in each class and, quite often, they equal and, very occasionally, outnumber the British students. The curriculum in these schools is almost always along the lines of the

STATE SCHOOLS

Nearly 40 per cent of London’s population were born elsewhere, so it makes sense that state-funded education should automatically be international in approach. The nationalities and backgrounds in the area where you choose to live will have a massive influence on the demographic of the local schools, as entrance for many is based on your home address.

The more popular the state school, the higher the price of the houses that fall into the catchment, which can shrink to a radius of a few hundred yards. Parents often weigh up the savings in private school fees against the extra cost of the mortgage, and competition for houses next to the best state schools is ferocious. This is understandable because the standard of state schools varies enormously and whilst many are very successful in both academic and pastoral terms, there are, unfortunately, some shockers to be avoided.

ALL ABOARD!

THE CITY KIDS GUIDE TO BOARDING SCHOOL

Despite uncertainty about private school fees, boarding schools are increasingly in the mix when parents make choices about the next step in their child’s education. But with many options available, we thought we’d give you a rough guide to the considerations. As Tom Rogerson, Cottesmore School Head says, “Make sure that you understand which type of boarding it is that you want; there are many different permutations of boarding offerings in 2024. Be really sure that the school you choose embodies that choice. Cottesmore, for example, is a full boarding school and everything we do feeds into that culture.”

Traditional/full boarding: well-known institutions such as Charterhouse, Eton, Marlborough (and many more), these schools provide full-time residency

during term time. However, with exeats scattered across each term, the reality is that you will still be able to see your child every two to three weeks. Geared up to keep their pupils occupied, these schools offer a wide range of activities and outstanding facilities to stave off boredom and homesickness. The fees are a serious commitment.

Weekly boarding: students stay at school full-time during the week and typically return home after sports matches on a Saturday. This strikes a balance between the structure and support of boarding life and the comfort of home during the weekends.

Flexi-boarding schools: increasingly popular arrangements mean these schools are in high demand. Students stay on

campus for specific days or nights during the week allowing for the convenience of ‘sleepovers’ with their friends while maintaining regular family time. This also means parents can enjoy the best of both worlds.

State boarding schools: State boarding schools, funded by the government, provide both weekly and full boarding options. Typically, day pupils outnumber boarders in most state boarding schools. With annual costs ranging from £12,000 to £18,000, state boarding options are significantly lower than the fees of private secondary schools which can start at around £40,000 per year for full boarding; parents are only charged for board and meals. Tuition costs are covered by government funding, as is the case for all pupils attending state schools.

SINGLE SEX OR CO-EDUCATIONAL

With all the options above, you will also have to decide if you’re looking for a girls’ or boys’ school or a co-educational setting. Some of the more traditional boys’ schools admit girls in sixth form or are re-thinking their offering to move to a coeducational model.

So when you’ve considered the type of boarding you’re looking for, what next?

ACADEMICS

There’s something to be said for having teachers on tap, especially when it comes to public examinations as pupils get older. Small class sizes are the norm and a focused environment contribute to academic success and personalised support for pupils. Make sure to ask how high achievers are stretched or how pupils are encouraged when they hit bumps in the road.

MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Long-gone are the days of large dormitories, awful food and a stiff-upper lip. These days boarding schools prioritise the holistic development of their pupils,

nurturing their academic abilities but also their resilience and social skills. Through the various activities on offer, pupils can explore their interests at their own pace and build lifelong friendships. Boarding schools also understand that some children do get homesick when first transitioning to their new life. Pastoral care teams, counsellors and peer support groups are in place and you should ask the school about these.

FACILITIES

It is true in life, as it is with fee-paying schools, that you do tend to get what you pay for, but with sometimes eye-watering fees, be sure that it is being spent in the areas which are important to you and your child. Impressive facilities, modern classrooms, well-equipped science labs, libraries and sports grounds are a given, but ensure that you get a feel that the teachers are happy, supportive and will go the extra mile. Also be honest as to whether your child will make the most of what you’re

paying for! Although the environment is likely to encourage children to try new pastimes, consider whether yours will make the most of it.

LOCATION

Depending on which type of boarding you choose, evaluate the school’s location, transportation options, and proximity to home to determine if it meets your family’s needs and preferences.

THE POWER OF OUTDOOR EDUCATION

FRENSHAM HEIGHTS’ HEAD ANDREW FISHER RUMINATES ON HOW OUTDOOR EDUCATION POSITIVELY AFFECTED HIS OWN LEADERSHIP STYLE AND HIS HOPES TO REPLICATE THE SAME FOR HIS STUDENTS.

Over the final week of January in the cold Surrey Hills, I took to the outdoors and camped in several unusual places around the school campus: hidden in the woods, right next to the carpark, high on an exposed side of the theatre and in a suspended tent dangling from the high ropes course. Why? To raise awareness and funds for a local charity, but on a higher level, to show that taking risks to support others is a great life lesson. Modelling behaviours, even those that are slightly more extreme, is one of the best ways to influence young people. Teaching is so much more than the ‘in classroom’ experience and outdoor education has

always been an essential part of my life and educational career. So, my winter camping challenge was not just a personal adventure. By grabbing people’s attention, raising the profile of the school charity (local cancersupport charity The Fountain Centre) and raising over £10,000 in the process, I hope I have appealed to the imagination and intuition of my students and shown that leading comes in all shapes and sizes.

My lifelong love of outdoor education began in 1977 when I attended Timbertop; Geelong Grammar’s yearlong outdoor centre in the Victorian highlands of Australia. Timbertop was established in 1953 and was largely modelled on the work

of Kurt Hahn, founder of Gordonstoun. Still a mandatory experience for Year 9 at the grammar school, the students spend a year at the isolated rural campus following a unique blend of indoor and outdoor learning – with a strong emphasis on personal development.

Here I learnt that I was stronger than I ever could have imagined, both physically and mentally. I learnt that I could plan and manage risk successfully. Essentially, I learnt who I was, how I functioned and what I could achieve even when I thought it impossible. The experience had a resounding effect. Throughout my school career, I have continued to be part of

outdoor education or when leading, have made it part of the school’s culture. Outdoor adventures have taught me an enormous amount about leadership, authenticity and trust. I can clearly remember the views from the mountains, the tears of rage from getting lost and the incredible freedom of walking with a few friends in true wilderness - the references back to those experiences remain strong even now, 47 years later.

At Frensham Heights, I have made sure that outdoor education is an intrinsic part of our curriculum, from Forest School in the early years through to incredibly challenging high-altitude expeditions for the older students. The programme for all activities begins with learning the specific skillset needed to prepare the students for their experiential learning – the real adventures. As their practical skills develop and their experiences widen, students develop massively in confidence, empathy, resilience, collaboration and communication. They take turns leading, running the budget, standing up and making critical decisions. Our main outcome is to develop the students’ self-confidence and sense of pride, their ability to step out of their comfort zones and not be afraid to make mistakes. To learn to deal with both

success and failure and to get back up and try again each time. To be authentic and learn to trust, both themselves and others.

Self-knowledge and the willingness to be open about your own strengths and weaknesses, especially when you are the one leading, are essential. I have never held with the tags put on leadership styles but being an ‘authentic’ leader is probably as close to the truth as I have got. If you are open and lead by example, show fragility and strength, can manage risk but not be afraid and live with values and morality; then you can be both authentic and naturally bring others with you at the same time. This style of leadership allows those who doubt, or who are yet to lead themselves – to see and understand that truth and self-reflection are key. By being openly and honestly an authentic leader, one is ideally growing similar leaders for the future.

I hope that my winter camping will be

memorable, will make some think about taking risks, and has raised the profile of The Fountain Centre. Perhaps most importantly, I hope that in the years ahead my students of today will have grown into adults who think they too can take a risk and can show their authentic selves to others as they lead.

LOUISE LIVINGSTON, HEAD OF TRAINING AT THE MARIA MONTESSORI INSTITUTE DISCUSSES WHAT SCHOOL READINESS MEANS AND HOW PARENTS CAN BEST SUPPORT THEIR CHILD IN THE EARLY YEARS.

It’s a rollercoaster of emotions as many parents eagerly await news about school placements, so it’s no surprise that some anxieties arise. This often turns to excitement once you have your child’s place, which can then turn to panic as you can wonder whether your child is truly prepared for the routine of school life.

Recent research reveals a disparity between teacher and parent perceptions of “school readiness”. In a survey by YouGov, teachers reported that more than half (54%) of children starting reception are not “ready for school”. In contrast, 89% of parents surveyed said they felt their child was ready, suggesting a vast difference of opinion about what is needed to be “ready for school”.

In the survey, the teachers questioned expected a few academic skills, such as holding a pen, the ability to recognise letters and numbers, and being familiar with a nursery rhyme or two. However, they also identified confidence, independence, and social skills, citing examples such as children being able to verbalise their own

needs, dressing, eating, and using the toilet independently, playing, the ability to share and take turns, understanding instructions, and being able to focus on a task for a short amount of time.

The Montessori approach to child development emphasises preparing adults, be they teachers or parents, to support children in a way that encourages independence, concentration and social skills. From birth onwards, we honour children’s drive to do things for themselves so that they can become self-confident, problem-solvers and independent thinkers.

Here are some examples of how parents can adopt a Montessori approach with their children:

MOVEMENT: Encourage movement from a young age; for example, you could place toys such as a rattle just out of a baby’s easy reach so they have to move to get it. As your child gets older, avoid using the buggy when they could walk and take them to large spaces where they can move freely and climb and balance.

SCHEDULES: Whenever possible, avoid always fitting your child into your schedule – they need time to play in a self-directed way at their own pace, using their own ideas.

CONFIDENCE: Enable your child to help with household tasks such as hanging out washing or tidying up; this will support independence and confidence. Show them how to do it and let them try.

INDEPENDENCE: Step back and let children do things by themselves as much as possible – from putting shoes on to cleaning themselves after eating – again, show them how to do it, and then let them try.

LISTEN: Take time to listen when your child is trying to communicate with you –even from a very young age – and respond

even when your child cannot say words for themselves – they will increase their vocabulary from hearing you say things.

If you can actively support your child’s development from the start, you can help them prepare for school and contribute to their long-term success and happiness, which is what every parent wishes for. We know that a child is more likely to fulfil their potential when they feel safe and secure, so by supporting their social skills and independence from their earliest days, as well as in the months leading up to the start of school, you can help them be confident and independent on their first days.

Remember that school settings should adapt to your child’s diverse and unique needs and that they should recognise that every child in their school is different. All classrooms should be open, friendly, and fully inclusive environments for parents and children to support individual development so that children leave school equipped with the life skills needed for a well-rounded journey through school and beyond. In Montessori, the teacher or “guide” will closely observe, giving each child the right level of challenge. The teacher will then continue to support them holistically by modelling courtesy and asking each child to contribute to the community by caring for the environment and each other.

UNLOCKING POTENTIAL AT KEW COLLEGE

FOOTBALL ARRIVES AT ST BENEDICT’S SCHOOL

St Benedict’s School in Ealing will be introducing football to their sports programme at the start of the new academic year in September 2024. This marks a new chapter for the school’s sports provision. Traditional winter sports; rugby, fencing, netball and hockey will continue to be an important focus of their sports programme alongside football.

Speaking of the recent developments, Headmaster, Joe Smith said: “We are extremely excited by this new sporting chapter for St Benedict’s and much work is taking place behind the scenes to ensure that football is integrated as seamlessly as possible into the school, and into the games provision.” The addition of football continues to build on a programme of sporting excellence within the school and will evolve significantly, year on year.

INSPIRED LAUNCHES THE NSOULI SCHOLARS INITIATIVE

The Nsouli Scholars Programme, launched by Inspired Education Group, will provide 50 children at any one time with a fully-funded, exceptional secondary education. The new initiative comes in addition to the existing 2,200 Inspired students already benefiting from scholarships and bursaries. The ambition is that the scholarship will provide hundreds of children with an opportunity to receive exceptional, transformative education. This scholarship pays tribute to Nadim M Nsouli, the visionary founder of Inspired, whose commitment to redefining education has set a new standard for excellence in global education.

Together, the Inspired existing scholarship and bursary programmes and the Nsouli Scholars initiative will result in an annual €56 million of community giving by Inspired.

Eligible students for the ‘Nsouli Scholars’ Full Scholarship must showcase excellence in academic performance and excel in at least one of the other two pillars defining an Inspired education: Sports, and Performing & Creative Arts. Additionally, applicants must be 13 years of age or above, and demonstrate strong personal qualities for future success, including integrity, leadership, ambition, boldness of vision, exceptional drive, and a capacity for hard work.

HUGE NUMBERS RISE TO CROSS-COUNTRY CHALLENGE

An incredible 1,200 pupils from 19 schools converged on Highfield and Brookham School for its annual cross-country competition. Children from independent and state schools from across Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex took part tackling tricky routes ranging from just over three-quarters of a mile to just under two miles consisting of woodland trails, varied terrain and plenty of mud. They also had to deal with the additional challenge brought about by a deluge of rain which fell on the course in the days leading up to the race.

Suzannah Cryer, Head of Highfield and Brookham School, said: “Our annual cross-country competition is always a popular event on the sports calendar, a fact borne out by the incredible number of runners representing an amazing number of schools. To say conditions for the young runners were difficult would be an understatement, with persistent wet weather before and during the race adding to the degree of difficulty of an already challenging course, but the children showed great strength of character and real resilience as they put their best feet forward in the name of their respective schools.”

Pupils from St Hilary’s, Edgeborough, Amesbury, Churcher’s College, Westbourne House, Aldro, Feltonfleet, Highfield and Brookham, Twyford, Hall Grove and Royal Grammar School Guildford won races.

LATYMER CELEBRATES 400 YEARS

Latymer Upper School’s 400th anniversary celebrations are in full swing with a host of events lined up throughout 2024. A specially commissioned play by acclaimed playwright and Latymerian Ruby Thomas entitled ‘Love. Liebe. Lyubov.’ takes to the stage at Richmond Theatre on 8th and 9th March. Based on the Johanneum Exchange which was founded by former Head Frederick ‘Wilkie’ Wilkinson, the play tells the story of ‘an experiment in friendship’ coming shortly after the end of WWII and explores the themes of connection, communication and tolerance across  divides.

PENNTHORPE PUPILS UNVEIL ART IN JOHN LEWIS

Pennthorpe recently showcased a ‘Seasonal Spectacular’ Art Exhibition, embracing the beauty of nature and the enchantment of the changing seasons. The exhibition was a collective effort showcasing the artistic talents of Pennthorpe’s children led by Mrs Rachel Shadlock, Head of Art & Design. The display provided a visual journey through the landscapes of the seasons, as envisioned by the young artists. Inspired by the vibrant colours, textures, lifeform and transformations that define the seasons, the installations in store comprised sculptures, collages and ceramics. Children from Reception through to Year 8 contributed artwork to this extraordinary showcase. In addition, some of the older Pennthorpians integrated their Design and Technology (DT) pieces to complement the immersive experience.

AS HE SETTLES INTO HIS NEW ROLE AT ST BENEDICT’S, JOE SMITH TALKS AMBITION, WELLBEING AND EUROVISION.

was born and brought up in Norfolk, where my dad was a farm manager and my mum a primary school teacher. I read English at Liverpool University, and when I finished I didn’t know what I wanted to do, and needed to pay off my student loans, so thought I’d do a PGCE and see what happened. I discovered that I enjoyed teaching English and seemed to be quite good at it. Being able also to coach sport was a bonus. That said, there are lots of teachers and academics in my family: my grandfather was a headteacher, as was his brother: I think he was the founding head of the first Catholic secondary modern in London.

My first job was at Colfe’s School in South East London, where I stayed for three years (a few of my cohort are now Heads). I then spent 12 happy years at Monkton Combe School in Bath, where I was Head of English then ran a boys’ boarding house as a housemaster. I was appointed Head of the Oratory Prep School (2-13) near Reading in 2010 and moved from there to become Head of the senior Oratory School (11-18) in 2016. I oversaw the school’s successful transition from a boys’ school to co-education. St Benedict’s was of course a huge draw: a highly successful, high performing school which was also Catholic, an aspect which means a lot to me personally. I’m 51 (ye Gods!) and it just felt the right time to move on and seek a new challenge, and after 25 years in the country we were keen to return to city life, not least with the children now older.

friends at the weekends and in the school holidays: if I hadn’t been a teacher, I’d have liked to have been a chef or food writer. I’m a big sports fan: cricket (member of MCC), rugby and football (West Ham) primarily, but I’ll happily watch pretty much any sport. I also love music (incidentally my cousin represented Great Britain (Royaume-Uni) in the Eurovision Song Contest) and theatre and I am looking forward to being closer to the heart of the action.

Everyone’s been really friendly and we’re enjoying exploring the local area. We have two dogs, so have discovered the local parks – Pitshanger, Hanger Hill, Montpelier. My sister lives in West Ealing, so she’s been brilliant at showing us the ropes – we’ve even benefited from the glut of produce from her allotment at Pitshanger! I’ve been tapped up for the Ealing Half, but don’t hold your breath: not sure my knees would manage it. My daughter loves the Chinese supermarket in Dickens Yard, and I’m enjoying visiting the local food shops.

of the word: truly fulfilled young people, with a clear sense of who they are, but with a profound humility about them. Seeing young people change and grow is an immense privilege. Those moments when something happens – Wordsworth calls them “spots of time” - and you see it in a young person’s eyes, make all the less exciting bits of the role worthwhile. To be honest too, I was a bit lazy at school and probably underachieved: it wasn’t until I got to university that I grew up and the penny dropped.

So, I do have a real passion for young people making the most of their talents and the opportunities that school presents them with. I don’t think we will know for a long time - if ever - the long-term effect of the pandemic on young people. So many of those unquestioned tenets of society - such as when you’re young you go to school, even if you grumble about it at times - were wrenched away from our children.

I’m married to Debbie, whose professional background is in market research, and we have three children: Seb, 22, Imogen 20 and Tom 16. I love cooking for family and

I want St Benedict’s to become an even happier (it is this already) school. This may sound unambitious, but I don’t think it is: I mean “happy” in the deeper sense

In leadership I do want people to feel empowered to make decisions and act on them. I can’t stand being treated in an overly deferential way – “Headmaster this, Headmaster that”: we’re all professionals and all in the same business of educating young people, and my role just happens to be Headmaster, whereas yours is something else. Appoint and promote great people and let them get on with their job, in a nutshell. A good school like ours is created by passionate and committed staff, who genuinely care about the young people they work with (we probably all had teachers who didn’t actually seem to like children); a healthy, kind culture and skilled and supportive governors. Good, courageous leaders.

Tell us about Love Ocean.

Love Ocean is an ocean conservation inspired ‘commerce for a cause’, personal care and wellness brand for the whole family. Our mission is to put ocean conservation front of mind in every family bathroom all over the world. Using an easily recognised powerful yet playful cue via our whale tail bottles we are positively uniting children and parents, motivating behaviour change and leading consumers to a whole new paradigm where refill and reuse are the new normal.

The inspiration came from overcoming my fear of the sea which then became a deep love and admiration for the sea and its power to heal us psychologically and physiologically. I always remembered the iconic Matey bubble bath from my own childhood, the children’s bath brand from the 80s, and I felt there was a gap in the market for a modern-day equivalent, that could be remembered not only for its eyecatching packaging design, but also for its important mission and purpose.

What’s the most challenging thing you’ve faced while being in business?

Raising investment as an early-stage female founded business. It’s much harder raising investment as a woman. I just don’t think we have the confidence that

men have going into those conversations. I constantly felt like I didn’t know my numbers well enough and that I would say the wrong thing. I also think we are too honest as women – we don’t inflate the numbers or exaggerate hugely on what we think we will achieve.

What have you learned about yourself whilst running your business?

I underestimate myself constantly. I outsourced so many of the business functions in the early days because I felt I just didn’t know how to do it, but it was just fear of stepping outside of my comfort zone. I have realised I am a quick learner and once I put my mind to something I can usually find my way through.

What advice would you give people trying to live a more sustainable life?

Start with two small things – like refilling your kids bubble bath bottle and buying a glass washing up liquid bottle and swapping to 5L washing up refill.

Tell us something no one knows about you. I have ADHD, only recently diagnosed age 47, and it explains a lot! I just thought I

had a collection of really unhelpful traits and habits like poor time management and organisational skills and an either all in or all out approach to work and life in general. What I didn’t realise is what an incredible superpower ADHD is when it comes to setting up a business. The ability to problem solve and think outside the box, and the ability to tolerate high levels of risk

Where’s your favourite date night spot?

The Chestnut Horse Pub in Easton, Winchester; fantastic food, a great cosy pub setting, and only 100 metres from my front door!
