Researchers within the NHS and Harvard recommend that your child should get moving for 3 to 5 hours a day, including 60 minutes of vigorous exercise. This isn’t just important for your child's physical health, but also critical to the development of their brain, their body, their sensory systems, and their social and emotional skills Pressures on timetables, resources and space mean this can be difficult within schools and nursery settings This is where The Little Gym steps in

HOW TO GET A SCHOLARSHIP OR BURSARY
whether they are academic superstars, winners on the sports fields or masters of art, music or drama. They raise schools’ results, add silverware to their trophy cabinets and lustre to their reputation. So many schools offer financial assistance to attract the brightest and most talented – and most private schools are run as charitable foundations with obligations to extend their provision to a limited number of children who merit places but whose parents cannot afford the fees.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Most private schools offer financial assistance in the forms of scholarships or bursaries for pupils who are either very able or can demonstrate the need for monetary support. The sums available can vary hugely and are given for different reasons but in a city such as London, where wealth and poverty live side by side, many parents see these awards as the route to a different way of life for their children.
Private schooling these days is out of the financial reach of most people –particularly those with more than one child to consider. For decades, fees have risen steeply in relation to salaries. And now, in the midst of a cost of living crisis and with rampant inflation, professional families,
whose children may have traditionally had a private school education, are on the lookout for cheaper alternatives.
London’s top private schools have been running projects for the last two decades to raise funds for their bursary pots. Grand statements have been made by heads of prestigious schools such as Westminster, St Paul’s and King’s College School that their institutions must move towards ‘needs blind’ admissions – where lack of family wealth is no barrier to a child being admitted as long as they are at the required academic level. These days, almost one-third of pupils educated in UK private schools receive some form of scholarship or bursary.
Good schools want able children –
Almost all private secondary schools offer scholarships in order to attract especially talented pupils. Awards are typically given for academic prowess, sporting or artistic skills – or a combination of all of these. They are often highly competitive but are usually worth more in kudos than cash. The financial benefit of a scholarship is rarely equal to more than 10 per cent of fees these days and sometimes as little as £100 in vouchers for art supplies for an art scholar.
More generous scholarship funds do exist at the most ancient of public schools such as Eton, Winchester et al as they have had centuries in which to accrue moneys from investments, grateful old boys and philanthropists to boost the scholarship pot. Even a prized King’s Scholarship from Eton is worth just 10 per cent of fees. Harrow School offers a number of scholarships each year to boys from West and North West London that cover not only 100% of the fees for five years at Harrow but also to study in years 7 and 8 at a nearby prep school.
Scholarships may not always cover the costs but if the school really wants an applicant who cannot afford the fees, they
CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 23 EDUCATION
WE GET HELP FROM THE EXPERTS AT THE GOOD SCHOOLS GUIDE TO ASSESS ACCESS TO SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES AT LONDON PRIVATE SCHOOLS
Alleyn’s School
will make sure to offer additional means tested bursaries on top. This is not an unusual situation, and we would suggest that parents are as open as possible with the school regarding fee assistance that might be needed to enable your child to attend. Younger schools, not to mention schools which aren’t charities, tend to have less generous scholarships or bursaries. In such cases, a scholarship may be little more than your name on a board and a year’s supply of football socks.
If you have time to put in the research and are willing to cast your net wide, you can find specialist scholarships in everything from chess or physics to tennis or sailing. Choir schools, of which London has a decent handful, offer scholarships worth 10 to 50 per cent of the fees to children with exceptional musical and singing potential. The government still runs a national Music and Dance Scheme which enables talented pupils to secure substantial help (sometimes 100 per cent of fees) at eight specialist schools, four of which are in or within touching distance of London.
BURSARIES
Bursaries enable capable children of less well-off families – those who would otherwise not be able to afford the fees – to attend private school. For the most suitable candidates, bursaries can be worth up to 100 per cent of fees – and in some cases, if they cover trips and uniform, even more. They are nearly always means-tested; a process which sees the applicant family undergo a thorough investigation of their
financial circumstances by the school bursar or an external auditing company.
The family income threshold for some degree of fee assistance can be surprisingly high. St Paul’s School offers support to families with an annual household income of less than £126,000. St Paul’s Girls have upped their family income threshold this year to £140,000. City of London School can offer a bursary to a family with a net household income of £70,000. So, it’s definitely worth exploring, although your income is just one of things that will be checked. Schools may well look at the value of your assets and assess other outgoings such as holidays. Each school has its own rules and ways of making their decisions and some are more transparent about these
than others. It can never hurt to enquire about bursarial assistance at any school that interests you.
WHAT NEXT?
The most important thing is to be realistic about your child and your financial circumstances. If your child is doing nicely, about average in his state primary, enjoying his sport or music but not exactly an Emma Raducanu or a Sheku KannehMason, then he is probably not destined for a scholarship. If you have a semi in London and a cottage in Dorset, keep a boat and a string of horses and ski in Courchevel every winter, you are unlikely to be taken seriously as a candidate for a bursaryhowever bright your child.
So, if your child is able, if you are not rich and you want a private education for them, then inform yourself. The Good Schools Guide’s books on schools in North London and South London carry details on which schools offer what fee assistance and our educational consultants can provide bespoke advice based on your family’s particular situation. Schools want to see their scholarship and bursary funds go to good use and they may just view your child as the ideal recipient. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know.

THE SUNDAY TIMES
United Kingdom School of the Decade THE SUNDAY TIMES THE WEEK
BRIGHTON COLLEGE PREP KENSINGTON IS OPEN
Brighton College Prep Kensington has officially opened as a leading preparatory school for boys and girls aged 2 to 13 in the heart of London.
As part of the award-winning Brighton College family of schools, named the ‘United Kingdom School of the Decade’ by The Sunday Times, Brighton College Prep Kensington will build upon this tradition of excellence in the heart of the Capital.
In an environment of academic excellence and opportunities beyond the classroom, the school celebrates the uniqueness of every child, fostering kindness, curiosity and confidence as they grow. The schools’ unique location, in a row of Grade-II-Listed Victorian houses just a short walk from South Kensington station, brings Brighton College to London, and gives children unparalleled access to experience London as their classroom.
Brighton College Prep Kensington provides an education modelled on the successful core curriculum of Brighton College – including the SUPER-curriculum, Story of Our Land, and the Home Economics and Lifetime Health (HEALTH) programme. The Pelican Pathways programme encourages students to excel academically, but also learn skills like teamwork and kindness, and actively participate in their school community and beyond.
With the Natural History Museum, the V&A, Hyde Park and the Science Museum on the doorstep, plus many more aweinspiring London landmarks (174 museums and art galleries in Kensington alone!), pupils have access to the best educational and cultural highlights as part of daily school life and allows the school to enjoy London as an extension of the classroom, bringing learning to life through unique, enriching experiences.
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths (STEAM) is a core part of the curriculum at Brighton College Prep Kensington, giving children the opportunity
to problem solve, think creatively and develop the critical thinking skills they will need for the future. Specialist facilities include a state-of-the-art Makerspace, fully equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, and a vast array of tools with which they are able to test and stretch their creative abilities.
The school encourages creativity in all forms in both the curriculum and through enrichment opportunities. Pupils from Nursery to Year 8 benefit from Music and Drama teaching in twice-weekly music lessons, and the opportunity to take part in a wide range of ensembles and music groups. Private tuition in many other instruments is also available with specialist teachers from the Royal College of Music.
Brighton College Prep Kensington promotes sports opportunities for all children, whatever their ability. The focus within the curriculum is on key sports with additional opportunities to enjoy gymnastics, badminton, and karate to name a few. Weekly swimming lessons at Imperial College are taught from Year 1 onwards.
Brighton College Prep Kensington offers a bespoke education experience for Years 7 and 8. With a blend of Brighton College curriculum, personalised pastoral tutoring, and specialist instruction, students are prepared for the next steps in their educational journey. Placements for leavers include Brighton College and other top senior schools in London and beyond.
The school’s exceptional facilities include a two-acre secret garden, a state-of-the-art
Makerspace, Science laboratories, dedicated Music space, and access to the top-class sports facilities at Imperial College London. The garden is unique in this part of London, and enables all pupils to be outside daily, come rain or shine, whilst also using the spaces for outdoor learning and Forest School. Waterproofs and wellington boots are provided!
Headmistress, Lois Gaffney, joining the school as former Deputy Head at Brighton College Prep Singapore, says: ‘I believe education needs to be exciting and dynamic to prepare pupils for the modern world. As teachers we should inspire children to explore, embrace opportunities and challenges, and work with others to be a part of society, not apart from it.’
Brighton College Prep Kensington is located a short walk from South Kensington and Knightsbridge stations. The school offers a bespoke door-to-door bus service from Reception, complete with chaperone, for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.
For 2024 applicants, the deadline to apply is Tuesday, 31st October. Open Mornings for interested parents are available on 7th October and 3rd February. All enquiries and tour requests can be sent to admissions@brightoncollegeprepkensington.co.uk. Brighton College Prep Kensington is part of the Cognita Schools Group.

SURREY SCHOOL PILOT AGRO-ECOLOGICAL GARDEN PROGRAMME
The staff and students at Frensham Heights School in Surrey are working with Worthy Earth on a pilot agro-ecological kitchen garden. Worthy Earth is a collection of small-scale vegetable gardens based in Hampshire and Oxfordshire. The vision is to create a network of small gardens which can provide free produce for the local community whilst equipping future generations with the knowledge to care for the land and grow their own food.
The project at Frensham Heights is the first to launch within a school environment. What started as an extracurricular project for Year 7 has now become firmly entrenched within the Key Stage 3 curriculum, with plans to involve younger and older students. This is a hands-on learning programme designed to give students an awareness of the social reality of food production, leaving them better equipped to make decisions in a world with ecological responsibilities.
INQUIRING MINDS AT LEIGHTON PARK
Leighton Park School has been celebrating this year’s Fryer Project Qualification (FPQ) Expo 2023, the culmination of a two-year ‘Approaches to Learning’ programme. It was designed to showcase the school’s commitment to fostering a spirit of inquiry and aims to develop critical thinking and practical skills, essential for lifelong learning.
This year, the qualification engaged all Year 8 students, who were encouraged to choose their own research titles and questions, enabling them to delve into areas of personal interest and passion. Moreover, they had the opportunity to present their findings before an audience comprising fellow students, teachers, and proud parents during an evening of academic celebration.
The chosen titles reflected a wide range of interests, including ‘Will nuclear fusion ever be commercially available?’, ‘How does media manipulation work?’, ‘Picky eaters: nature or nurture?’, ‘Why do humans love cats so much?’, and ‘Should we have a global currency?’. Jenny Powlesland, Head of Teaching and Learning reflected: “We teach our students really rigorous research skills so they produce a fully footnoted, bibliography, referenced, dissertation at no less than a thousand words… and of course they present at the expo so they’re getting confidence at public speaking as well; they love it!”
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!
At Cranleigh Prep, pupils have been experiencing an enriched education for some time to include trips, visitors and curriculum collapse days. World Book Day, Maths Puzzle Day or LAUNCH day (Learn And Understand New experiences that Challenge their Horizons) are designed to go beyond the curriculum to inspire and motivate.
This year’s LAUNCH theme was Lights, Camera, Action. The day was filled with activities themed around the film industry – from camera work, film editing, special effect make-up to karate kid lessons, stop-motion animation, acting and what it is like to work in the stunt industry.
The Science department taught the pupils about the history of shadow puppets and how Hagrid was made to be tall with forced perspective; the IT department ran stop-motion and green-screen session alongside young film crews and photography specialists; the Drama and English departments ran a Young Film Academy; the dance teacher taught La La Land and Grease dances plus there was a talk from a stunt woman and especial masterclass on make-up scars, boils and bruises and monologue acting.
DOWNSEND CELEBRATES INAUGURAL GCSE RESULTS
In its first-ever full set of GCSE examinations, Downsend School has achieved impressive results, following its transition from Prep School to an all through school for girls and boys up to age sixteen. 97% of all students achieved grades 9-4 overall, and 21% of all grades were 9-8.
Committed to its ‘Future Skills’ Vision, Downsend focuses on instilling a global perspective in its students, and inspiring a generation of young people to have emotional intelligence and skills to lead, to question, and to make changes, in today’s rapidlyevolving world.
Speaking about his pride in the students’ accomplishments, Headteacher Ian Thorpe said, “As a school that recognises the crucial importance of Future Skills, we know that the problem-solving skills, creative thinking, collaboration, resilience and communication skills developed by our students here at Downsend will have an enduring impact on their adult lives, and we can’t wait to see all the incredible things they will go on to accomplish.”

NEW BOARDING HOUSES FOR BEDE’S
Robin Fletcher, CEO of the Boarding Schools Association (BSA) recently gave the new boarding house at Bede’s the seal of approval. The grand opening welcomed both current and alumni pupils from old Dorms House, contractors, Sunninghill, Bede’s Estates team, Governors and house staff for the occasion.
Bede’s boasts five stunning boarding houses, two of which have been recognised by the Institute of Chartered Surveyors for their Outstanding Design and Innovation. The latest addition to the boarding portfolio was a project started before the pandemic. The new development features inspiration from its location next to the South Downs and includes modern facilities, accommodating 70 beds with scope for higher capacity, as well as a 170 square meter atrium, learning spaces, flexible spaces for meetings and conferences, offices, kitchen facilities, and storage areas. It also uses an eco-friendly heat source as part of the Trust’s pledge to reduce its carbon footprint and create a greener environment for their community. There is a focus of nature and the environment throughout the house, featuring wood finishes and floor to ceiling windows.
NEW JUNIOR SCHOOL BUILDING FOR NOTTING HILL AND EALING
Notting Hill and Ealing High School’s new junior school building is on track to be completed this Autumn. Sustainability has been at the heart of the project which, when finished, will provide a fully accessible building including 14 new classrooms, specialist teaching spaces for music, art, science and computing, a light-filled library and a hall with performance seating. With a science garden, forest school area and dedicated play area for Reception pupils, the outside space is integral to making learning a hands-on experience.
The building has a sustainable wooden frame, south-facing photovoltaic panels on the saw tooth roof to catch the most sunlight and supply electricity, north-facing roof lights for daylight with limited solar gain, a highly insulated and airtight building fabric, air source heat pumps, a heat recovery system to keep the warmth in the building while allowing fresh air in, and noise-reducing sustainable wooden cladding inside.

ALL CHANGE ST ANTHONY’S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS BECOMES IVY HOUSE SCHOOL
Following the purchase of 17 Alpha Plus Group schools and nurseries by Inspired Education Group, St Anthony’s School for Girls will start the new school year as Ivy House school. It is also moving towards a coed system. Changes will be gradual, with boys not accepted in Years 5 and 6 this coming academic year. The school will also become non-denominational, although a plan is in place with the Diocese to continue to support families who are Catholic.
DULWICH PREP EXPANDS
From September 2025, pupils at Dulwich Prep will be able to stay at the school and take their GCSEs. The option to avoid 11+ and Common Entrance exams could prove very popular while those wishing to continue on that track will be fully supported.
A NEW FALCONS TAKES FLIGHT
Falcons School for Girls is now Falcons School, a fully co-ed school for boys and girls aged 2-11. Head Sara Williams-Ryan is focused on maintaining the current academic high expectations and sharing the school’s methods with the new intake of boys.
TURNING HEADS
Joe Smith is St Benedict’s School’s new Head, joining from The Oratory School, near Reading, where he has been Head since 2017. He studied English at the University of Liverpool and prior to his headship at The Oratory School, he led its prep school.
Mark Snell takes up the role of Head at Eaton House Belgravia succeeding Huw May. He arrives for Eaton House Schools’ 125th anniversary year from Wetherby School.
Susan Wijeratna has started work as the new Head of Latymer Upper School. She arrives from Eton College as the school celebrates the Latymer Foundation’s 400th year, as well as realising the ambition of outgoing Head, David Goodhew, to offer bursaries to one in four pupils.
WILDFLOWER GRANT FOR HIGHFIELD AND BROOKHAM SCHOOLS
Highfield and Brookham Schools has been awarded a £4,250 grant from the South Downs National Park Trust as part of its Bee Lines scheme, which aims to protect, nurture and support busy pollinators. The nursery, pre-prep and prep school, which sits in 175-acre grounds on the rural borders of Hampshire, West Sussex and Surrey, will use the cash to extend its wildflower-planting project. The grant will cover the hire of a specialist rotavator for two weeks and 15 kilos of wildflower seed mix which can cover more than 6,500 square metres of land.
The South Downs National Park Trust set up its Bee Lines scheme to establish or restore pollinator habitats, with grant applications open to any businesses within Britain’s newest national park.
Pupils at Highfield and Brookham Schools undertake regular green activities, such as building hibernaculum for wildlife and growing their own vegetables, dovetailing with the school’s ongoing eco programme, which is underpinned by its impressive biomass boilers which provide 85% of its heating and energy needs.

SCHOOL DIRECTORY
If you are considering the private route, our schools directory provides some basic information and contact details to help you on your way to choosing a school. Check websites for open days and registration deadlines as some schools will operate a first come first served system, while others might assess.
PRE-PREP/PREP/PRIMARY DAY SCHOOLS
Choosing a first school can be overwhelming. Old hands will tell you that league tables and statistics (and tittle tattle) are only part of the story – an open day, tour or show around will give you the feel for a place and the opportunity to ask questions.
SECONDARY DAY SCHOOLS
London has some of the best secondary schools in the country and as a result it can feel a bit frenzied as families head towards 11+ exams. But, if you ignore the tittle tattle, stay honest about your child’s ability and character, and do your research, you will find a school where your child will flourish and be happy.
PREP BOARDING
You may be considering a move out or prefer your child has a countryside education. Our prep boarding list has distance in mind, with journey times from London under an hour.
SECONDARY BOARDING
As your children become more independent, distance is not quite so key, so our directory reflects this, taking in further flung counties such as Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Dorset. And some quintessential English boarding schools.
SEN SCHOOLS
Amongst the most sought after schools in the capital, places are hard to come by and come at a cost. Research is key as parents of neuro-diverse and children with special educational needs will know, one size does not fit all.
You’ll find all the schools within our directory on The Good Schools Guide website: those which are reviewed are marked with a .
Ivy House School thrives as a distinguished, co-educational, and non-denominational school for children aged 2 to 11.

GROUNDED. INSPIRED. HAPPY.
A real education is about so much more than accumulating facts and passing tests. Being able to apply knowledge, critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration to realworld problems and situations is getting so much closer. Add in an environment where teenagers can grow up grounded, balanced and happy and you’ve found a refreshing, modern education which prepares children for their futures, not just their exams. Get in touch at hello@frensham.org to find out more.

HOW TO FIND A TUTOR
Anyone who has been through entrance exams knows that finding a good tutor is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Don’t think that your friends will share theirs either – the contacts of a tutor with a great track record are often a closely guarded secret. But whether you’re looking for exam preparation or your child needs help with understanding the curriculum, the points to consider are the same.
ASSESS THE GOAL
• Evaluate your child’s academic performance and any specific challenges they face. Do they struggle with a particular subject, need help with exam preparation, or require assistance in developing study skills?
• Engage in open communication with your child. Are they feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or lacking confidence in their studies? Their input is valuable in determining whether a tutor is needed.
• Consider your child’s long-term educational goals. Do they need a tutor to address a temporary issue or ongoing support to excel in a particular subject?
WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A TUTOR
• Ensure the tutor has appropriate qualifications and expertise in the subject area your child needs assistance with. Check for relevant degrees or teaching certifications.
• Look for tutors with a proven track record of success. Ask for references or
reviews from other parents or students who have worked with them.
• Each child is unique, so find a tutor whose teaching style aligns with your child’s learning preferences. Some children thrive with a structured approach, while others benefit from a more creative and flexible approach.
• Determine the tutor’s availability and whether it matches your child’s schedule. Flexibility in terms of session times and location can be crucial.
• Consider whether you prefer in-person or online tutoring. London’s traffic can be a challenge, so online sessions might be more convenient for some families.
• Discuss the tutor’s fees upfront and ensure it fits within your budget. Keep in mind that quality education is an investment in your child’s future.
QUESTIONS TO ASK
• Ask about the tutor’s teaching philosophy and approach. Do they adapt their methods to cater to individual students?
• Inquire how the tutor assesses a student’s progress. Regular assessments are essential to track improvement.
• Discuss how the tutor plans to communicate with you regarding your child’s progress and areas that need improvement.
• Check whether the tutor provides additional learning materials,
resources, or practice tests to support your child’s learning.
MONITOR PROGRESS
• Stay actively involved in your child’s tutoring journey. Schedule regular check-ins with the tutor to discuss progress and address any concerns.
• Encourage your child to share their thoughts on the tutoring experience. Are they finding it helpful, or do they have any concerns?
Evaluate your child’s academic performance over time to determine if the tutoring is yielding positive results. Be patient; progress may take time.
The right tutor can make a significant difference to your child’s academic success, confidence, and overall learning experience. By carefully considering your child’s needs and diligently researching potential tutors, you can find the perfect fit to help your child thrive in London’s educational landscape. Word of mouth and Google can be your friends here but The Good Schools Guide has also reviewed over 50 tutor companies.

AS THE CO-FOUNDER OF ECO-FRIENDLY FAMILY BRAND, KIT & KIN, EMMA BUNTON SHARES HOW HER FAMILY HAS HELPED TO SHAPE HER BUSINESS.
CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 53
“I’m extremely future focused and want to make decisions that protect the world our children will grow up in.”
Out of all The Spice Girls, it seems fitting that Baby Spice would go on to be the co-founder of an eco-nappy range which has moved into sustainable skincare, clothing and cleaning ranges. Kit & Kin’s recent move into eco-cleaning gives Victoria Evans the perfect opportunity to ask Emma about family life, Spice Girls Reunions and saving the planet.
Kit & Kin is now six! Tell us about the latest developments.
We’ve achieved so much. We have launched in over 30 different countries, won 55 industry awards, and helped so many parents switch to gentle and more sustainable solutions for their family. The strapline for Kit & Kin is ‘protecting your world naturally’ and that reflects our approach to everything we do.
We’ve recently just launched a plant-based refillable cleaning range, which I’m so proud of,
as it’s entirely free from harsh chemicals. The range comes in beautifully designed bottles and refill pouches to save on unnecessary plastic, while the naturally derived, biodegradable ingredients ensure they are kinder to families and the planet.
You’re clearly business savvy, but what made you choose skincare as a sector to build a business?
We actually started with sustainable eco nappies and biodegradable wipes, then developed a gorgeously natural skincare range for mother and baby, the cutest organic cotton babywear and now have just launched eco cleaning.
It all started as my children had such sensitive skin when they were little and I found mainstream products seemed to aggravate it further. Becoming a mother made me think about the future much more, so I wanted to create gentle products that were also better for the environment. Our aim is to create products that
FEATURE 54 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
parents can really trust; no long, confusing ingredients list, just simple products that are made using natural and sustainable ingredients and materials.
How much do you think customers have changed in their desire to be more sustainable during the last six years?
It’s so encouraging that there is so much more conversation and awareness about making more sustainable choices. We’re all busy parents which can make it difficult to prioritise sustainability, but I believe everyone is trying their best to be more mindful and less wasteful. It’s clear customers are actively seeking out and looking to switch to eco-friendly products, and even these simple swaps can make a real difference.
How has parenthood shaped the decisions you make for Kit & Kin?
I’m extremely future focused and want to make decisions that protect the world our children will grow up in. I completely understand that all parents want is the best for their little ones, therefore everything we create is with this in mind. Everything we do at Kit & Kin is kinder to your family, kinder to the planet and gives back, as every product we sell protects acres of precious rainforests through our partnership with the World Land Trust.
I find it so incredibly rewarding knowing that what we offer at Kit & Kin makes parents’ lives that bit easier and helps look after the planet.
Who is better at household chores - you or Jade?
We each have our own little quirks around the house. Jade is quite meticulous, often cleaning up around us and is constantly tidying away, whereas I like to crack on and get stuff done.
Do you get your children to do chores?
Absolutely! It’s important being part of a family that you work together as a team, and for the kids to learn life skills for their future too.
What’s the secret to a successful relationship? Love and laugher, and lots of it.
What have you found the hardest about being a parent?
Knowing you can’t protect them forever from difficult things in the world.
What has been most rewarding about being a parent?
Seeing what amazing people my children are growing up to be.
Does Girl Power mean the same to you now as it did when you were starting out with The Spice Girls?
The ethos behind ‘girl power’ remains the same, as it’s just so important for girls and women around the world to have the ability to reach their full potential. At Kit & Kin, we’re helping to fund educational scholarships, healthcare and family planning clinics in rural Guatemala through our partnership with the World Land Trust. It’s a project that I’m really passionate about and one where we can really make a difference to the lives of these women.
Three words to describe yourself. Loyal, loving and indecisive!!
This may be tricky but tell us one thing people don’t know about you.
I’m very flexible and I love jellied eels!
Where’s your dream date night?
Dinner at my favourite local restaurant and walking home on a beautiful evening.
Where’s the one place in London you’d always recommend friends with kids to go to?
A stroll down Southbank is always such an incredible experience, as you get to take in the London landmarks and watch incredible artists as you walk by.
The last book you read?
Jane Fallon’s Queen Bee
Signature dish?
Jade is definitely the chef in our house, however I make a great pasta broccoli dish, which the kids absolutely love.
What would you take to a desert island?
Sunscreen, a good book and enough ingredients to make a few good margaritas.
What’s your proudest moment?
Meeting my children for the first time.
When will we see The Spice Girls back together?
I would love us to work together again soon. It’s one of my happy places, on stage with my girls!

Chicken and chorizo sausage rolls
Once you’ve made these, there’s no going back to bought sausage rolls as they are so tasty… so why not double up and put a batch in the freezer ready to cook another day.
1 tbsp olive oil
1 red onion, finely chopped
½ red chilli, finely chopped
2 tsp fennel seeds
2 garlic cloves, crushed or grated
1 tbsp sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar
200g chicken mince
175g cooking chorizo sausages, skins removed
2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley
320g sheet ready rolled puff pastry
1 egg, beaten, for glazing
Flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
MAKES 8
PREP TIME 30 minutes
COOKING TIME 30 minutes
Dairy-free/nut-free / for gluten-free, use gluten-free pastry and chorizo sausages
1. Heat the oil in a saucepan and add the onion, chilli and 1 tsp fennel seeds. Cook for about 5 minutes until the onion has softened. Add the garlic and vinegar and cook for a further minute or until the liquid has cooked away. Remove from the pan and put in a large mixing bowl to cool.
Recipes from The Flexible Baker by Jo Pratt, £20 The Quarto Group Photography: Malou Burger jo-pratt.com
2. Add the chicken mince, chorizo sausage meat and parsley to the bowl. Season with salt and pepper and mix well. It is best to do this by hand, so everything is evenly mixed. If that doesn’t appeal, you can briefly mix in a food processor but don’t over mix as it will become too pasty.
3. Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Line a baking tray with baking parchment. 4. Unroll the pastry and cut into two long strips. Divide the sausage filling between the centre of both strips and brush the beaten egg along one long side of each. Roll the other side of pastry over the filling and press down to seal. Using a sharp knife, cut each roll into 4, giving you 8 sausage rolls in total.
5. Put the sausage rolls on the baking sheet, sealed side down and brush with beaten egg. Sprinkle over the reserved fennel seeds and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and crisp. Serve warm or cold.

How did you come up with the idea for ZIG+STAR?
I was on maternity leave from Topshop, where I was Head of Buying, in 2017 with my third child Ziggy. I’d experienced first-hand the frustrations of shoe shopping for my own children and, being a footwear specialist, decided to take matters into my own hands. For me there was a big problem to solve. I’d seen what overconsumption was doing to our planet and footwear is a particularly difficult product to deal with once it’s been used. I wanted my product to not only be durable and easy to recycle, but I decided to offer end of life solutions to ensure they never end in landfill: for every pair you send back to us to be donated or recycled, we give you £5 off your next purchase. Our mission is a simple one: no ZIG+STARs to ever end in landfill.
What makes ZIG+STAR special?
As a mum, I always felt buying kid’s footwear came with a compromise between good fit or good design. Everything felt heavily gendered and played to outdated stereotypes, and sustainable credentials were few and far between. So, I decided to create what I wanted for my own kids, cool, unisex styling with great podiatrist approved fit and a strong sustainable mission. Plus, I recognised the waste that came with quick growing children, so I created sustainably designed shoes that actually grow with the child - a first for the kids’ footwear market and a pretty unique concept in the kids market generally.
Where do you see ZIG+STAR in five years’ time?
Kids grow quickly, that’s a lovely fact of life. But perfectly usable products end up sitting there going to waste as they no longer fit. At ZIG+STAR we believe there is a lot more than
who is?
ALI MCALEAVY?
footwear that needs our attention. I have so many ideas for other kidswear product that will help reduce our environmental footprint and I’m excited about what the future holds!
Your favourite shoes as a kid?
When I was about five or six, I had a pair of red leather T-bars that I adored. I remember the feeling of putting them on for the first time and never wanting to take them off. I get messages now from parents saying the same thing about my shoes and it’s just the loveliest feeling that I might be part of those special childhood memories.
Another woman in business who you admire and why.
Amy Powney from Mother of Pearl for her single-minded commitment to building a brand ethically and sustainably. The documentary, “Fashion Reimagined”, following her journey, is inspirational.
Three words to describe yourself. Positive, open-minded, and always busy!
Tell us one thing people don’t know about you. I had dinner with Neil Armstrong, and he was lovely. Still can’t quite believe that myself!
Where would your favourite date night be? A gig at Ally Pally so I can walk home after!
Where’s the best place to take kids in London?
Camden for a pootle along the canal followed by vintage shopping and ice-cream in Stables Market.
If you had 24 hours on your own what would you do?
Vintage jewellery shopping. My kids will tell you I’m obsessed, they’ve had to drag me away
from many a shop window. Followed by the theatre which I will happily do on my own!
Best advice anyone has ever given you. No problem is unsolvable.
Last book you read?
What About Men by Caitlin Moran… I love everything she writes but this was a brilliant, eye-opening read, one I would recommend to parents of both girls and boys (in fact everyone should read it!).
Signature dish?
I’m a terrible cook but if it’s a one pot dish I can’t go too wrong. I’d say tom yum soup.
What would you take to a desert island? A library of podcasts, my favourite way to unwind a busy mind.
What’s your proudest moment?
Being stocked in Selfridges feels like a big achievement. But my brilliant, individual kids are what I’m most proud of.
What’s next for Ali McAleavy?
I’m currently working on an exciting new product for next year which I can’t wait to launch. We have some great new partnerships in the pipeline, and we are growing quickly so next on the agenda is building a ZIG+STAR team!
