FOREWORD Welcome to the December/January edition of CairnsLife Magazine. For our cover story this month we spend a day on location with rising star Grace Taylor, the 2015 Face of Cairns Central. At just fifteen years old, Grace is taking the modelling world by storm, securing a lucrative three year contract with Chic Management in Sydney, and preparing to launch into the 2016 Sydney Fashion Week. From high fashion to politics, we also spend time on the road with Queensland Treasurer the Honourable Curtis Pitt MP, for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at a hard working day in office. We have a special supplement for our 50+ readers titled Boomers, Zoomers and Seniors, where we talk retirement, travel, health and fitness, and profile a Cairns couple who are a shining example of life getting better with age.

Our regular Grumpy Old Man Danny Betros is back, and we sit down with Cr Linda Cooper for our final Lunch with a Councillor. We also chat with Cairns brothers Ray and David Murphy, who have each achieved the title of ‘Rookie of the Year’ in their chosen fields. Opening up competition on the trans-tasman route, Philippine Airlines commenced flights from the Philippines to New Zealand via Cairns on the 1st of December. This is exciting news for travellers, with another direct flight option from Cairns to Auckland, as well as Cairns to Manila. See our back cover for further details. As we reflect on the year that was, we would like to thank you, our readers, for your support and enthusiasm in 2015. On behalf of all the team at CairnsLife Magazine, I’d like to wish you a safe and happy festive season, and a prosperous year ahead. Enjoy.

Cover Story

Amazing

Grace

Michelle Stacpoole spends the day on location with the 2015 Face of Cairns Central Grace Taylor, and talks modelling, working with Instagram idol Steph Claire Smith, and what’s next for the rising superstar…..

Grace Taylor did not intend to enter the 2015 Face of Cairns Central competition.

“I am going to do my certificates in Business, Hospitality, Fitness, and Workplace Health and Safety, to lead into working in marketing,” says Grace.

It was only when the Cairns teenager was spotted in the audience by talent scouts and encouraged to participate that she considered putting her name forward.

On location in Palm Cove for the CairnsLife Magazine cover shoot, Grace seems relaxed and unfazed by the attention.

“I was watching the competition when I was approached, and I thought it might be fun,” says Grace.

Citing Alexis Friend and model Gigi Hadid among her idols, the fifteen year old still enjoys just ‘hanging out’ with her friends…. and listening to rap music.

Impressing judges with her elegant poise and enviable 179cm frame, Grace took out the competition and secured a three year modelling contract with Chic Management in Sydney. Grace joins the agency with the likes of high profile models including Samantha Harris and Catherine McNeil, who were originally signed by the Director of Chic, Ursula Hufnagel. “Chic are very excited to now represent Grace. We believe that she has the look that will move her into a global superstar, and we can’t wait to introduce her to the international market,” says Ursula. Since winning the competition in July, life has been a whirlwind for the Cairns State High School student. Securing the role of Fashion Ambassador for the Amateurs Racing Carnival, which included a series of media appearances, fashion shoots and parades, Grace also headed the ‘Race Style for me’ Spring Racing campaign for Cairns Central. The highlight so far however was working alongside model Steph Claire Smith. With over 820,000 Instagram followers, Steph is the first of a new generation of model – the Insta Famous model. Styled by fashion icon Romy Frydman of StyleMeRomy, Grace and Steph modelled this season’s latest trends for Cairns Central’s ‘Summer of Me’ fashion campaign. “That was pretty cool,” says Grace.

“Grace is pretty grounded. She hasn’t let it all go to her head,” says her mother, Tania. Joining Grace for the CairnsLife Magazine fashion shoot is 2015 Face of Cairns Central runner-up Mary Anderson.

Don’t worry about what anybody else thinks. Just be yourself Cairns Central Marketing Manager Louise Struber said the centre was excited to include Grace in key fashion campaigns and community partnerships, giving her the opportunity to get one step closer to her dreams of becoming a model. “We are so excited to provide Grace with this opportunity. The centre has a passion for nurturing and uncovering local talent, providing platforms for them to launch their careers,” she says. While Grace seems set for a career in modelling, she intends to finish high school and further her studies in the field of marketing.

Signed by Dally’s Models in Brisbane, the sixteen-year-old Smithfield High School student has plans to balance her modelling with tertiary studies in veterinary science. “Dallys Models are extremely thrilled to represent Mary Anderson with her upcoming modelling career. Mary was a stand-out at this years ‘Face of Cairns Central’. Such a great competition which builds in momentum year after year,” says Thomas Sidney, Model Manager Dally’s Models. Both girls are looking forward to the opportunities unfolding for the year ahead. With strong family support and a balanced outlook Grace is excited about her prospective launch into the 2016 Fashion Week. When asked what the biggest thing that she has learnt on this journey so far is, Grace responds with a candor and insight beyond her years. “Don’t worry about what anybody else thinks. Just be yourself,” says Grace. It seems certain that the star of amazing Grace will continue to shine for many years to come.

GRUMPY OLD MAN with

Danny Betros

As you get older you really do become less tolerant of idiots and annoying behavior. As you go about normal life activities there are people you come across that you can’t help wondering how they made it this far and are walking upright on two legs and breathing on their own. A month or so ago we had one of those perfect Sundays. No wind, clear sky, warm temperature. So the wife and I decided to head for Trinity Beach. Pulled up on the southern end, got out my chair with my Sunday paper, all relaxed, my wife went to sleep, and then THEY arrived. The invasion of the bogans. Three hotted up utes /cars over-revving, loud sh*t gothic crap music as an assault on everyone’s ears, and one with hunting dogs in a cage on the back snarling frothing and barking at anyone who came within 50 metres. They came equipped with standard issue; esky’s full of VB, tattoos, black singlets and typical girlfriends who were wearing their much younger and smaller sister’s clothes. The noise was exceptional. The “look at me” generation had arrived, and they got everyone’s attention. So here’s the scene. Families everywhere, mums relaxing, kids playing, designer white yapping fluff dogs everywhere, and the head bogan decides to let his attack dogs out for a run. What could possibly go wrong? The dogs took off straight to the water barking at everyone and everything on the way. The great chase was on. Dogs chasing other dogs; dogs barking at people. People barking back at dogs and the bogan to get rid of his dogs. Mothers grabbing their designer

THE WAR ON STUPIDITY

fluff dogs and then their kids (in that order) to shield them from the animals. I think the dogs even tried to bite a jetski that was moored near the beach. It was like a scene from a computer game where you have to wipe everyone from the beach. Agro everywhere. To get away from the ruckus my ice cream stomach clock went off and I said to my wife “Let’s get out of here and get an ice-cream”. I needed a calming walk to negate the feeling of my blood boiling over this assault on my Sunday peace and quiet. Surely it couldn’t get any worse. Walking along at Trinity the path is narrow with heavy vegetation in parts. As we were going along, people coming the other way were saying “Watch out for the dog sh*t”. Before I knew it we had stumbled across a massive steaming pile of fresh crap perfectly positioned in the centre of the narrow pathway. Not a bit to the left or right, but right in the centre. This dog (or small horse) would have had to have stopped, done the circle, assumed the position and dropped its load while its owner would have been right beside it, probably with a proud stupid grin on their face. Judging by the size of the pile it had to have an owner because anything that big would be grazing or had a saddle on it. People were stepping in it around the edges, small kids leaving “sh*t prints” on the path for metres beyond. If it wasn’t so disgusting it would have been funny. I would love to meet the dog owner just to satisfy myself that they are from this planet. Who does that with their dog and then just walks away? Upset the rest of our day, and really turned me right off my chocolate ice cream.

In My Opinion

In your opinion, how has your secondary school benefited from the inclusion of Year 7 in 2015, and what structural improvements have been undertaken to accommodate the subsequent growth in student numbers?

setting has seen the creation of a culture of engagement and learning through Junior Secondary initiatives such as innovative student centred curriculum, wider curriculum choices, specialised learning programs and attendance programs. These initiatives have focused on catering for the social, emotional and academic needs of our students which have seen them respond with academic results consistently exceeding school targets with continual improvement. Parents and community engagement have also benefited through inclusion in curriculum innovations through the Tropical North Learning Academy and community forums around the literate futures of our learners. Structural improvements have also included the designation of a Junior Secondary precinct as a way to support the transition for our Year 7 students.

staff strive to respond to the needs of younger boys, in particular our focus has been on subject differentiation, learning enrichment and ELearning. Our specialist staff and facilities allows us to continually tweak what we do in an effort to respond to the needs of the young adolescent. We created a designated precinct for the Year 7’s which has given them a space within the College that they can call home. Furthermore, the end of 2014 saw the culmination of a nine million dollar upgrade including the replacement of the old “J-Block” and new Science labs and Hospitality/Food Technology blocks. The Year 7’s have settled very well into Saints and I have no doubt that in 2020 when our first cohort of Year 7’s graduate, they will do so with ‘strong minds and gentle hearts’.

The inclusion of the Year 7 cohort in 2015 at the Tropical North Learning Academy - Smithfield High School has seen a wealth of benefits for all stakeholders. From a school point of view the expansion has seen a more defined visible presence of Junior Secondary which has enabled greater collaborative empowerment around key areas of data analysis, professional practice, knowledge and engagement. This expansion has allowed specialised teams to foster specialist Junior Secondary pedagogy and curriculum to support and enhance the success of junior secondary learners. This collaborative empowerment has better enabled the inclusion of high yield strategies to meet the needs of our learners. From a student point of view the inclusion of Year 7 into our high school

This year the inclusion of Year 7 into St Augustine’s College has seen our older boys take a lead role in extending the family spirit that is intrinsic to our College life. It is heartening to walk around the College and see our older boys help the younger boys, not only via our “Saints Mates” program but by doing ‘good things quietly’. This family spirit ensures that students are supported in their transition to Secondary School and throughout their time at the College. Indeed, as a College we acknowledge that the transition of Year 7 into secondary school is not a one off an event. It involves a continual process of seeking to improve our practices to ensure the best learning outcomes for students. The inclusion of Year 7 has seen our

Lunch with our Councillor’s

Linda Cooper

Linda Cooper is a dynamic personality. Originally from Perth, Linda always wanted to pursue a career in journalism, however gained her formal qualifications in hotel management instead. It was when a fill in role for a couple of hours on breakfast radio shortly after arriving in Cairns quickly turned into a full time gig with the HOTFM radio show Rabbit and Coops, that Linda established her presence. Fast forward nearly two decades and Linda is now in her second term as Councillor for Division 6, representing residents in Brinsmead, Crystal Cascades, Kamerunga, Park Ridge, Redlynch, and Whitfield. For Linda, moving from media to council was a natural progression. “Working in the media, you deal with the community on a daily basis,” she says. “You are also dealing with the civic leaders as well. You get a great appreciation of the network that makes everything work,” she adds. Linda’s ability to network, combined with her passion for charity work, has led her to sit on several boards and committees such as the Public Art Advisory Committee, the Cairns Regional Gallery, and the Redlynch Multi-use Sports Facility Committee. “Sometimes it’s just being that connector to make things happen. It is above and beyond

Words by: Michelle Stacpoole

It’s those emotional connections that actually build the communities the physical council role, but I think it’s imperative to what you do as a community representative,” says Linda. While representing her constituents Linda has delivered on the Brinsmead to Redlynch Connector Path. At a cost of just under $2 million, the 5 kilometre cycle way provides a safe, car-free route for children riding to schools, as well as encouraging an active lifestyle for residents of the area.

trail, adding another dimension to an already iconic trail area. “Residents of Division 6 obviously benefit because it’s literally in their backyard, which is great for accessibility, but I daresay it won’t hurt their property values either,” says Linda. “We are very lucky to have such a huge range of outdoor exercise facilities across the region,” she adds. Linda’s focus has not all been on fitness and recreation. Securing funding to upgrade the Salli and John Mitchell Park in Jungara Ave, Linda enlisted the assistance of their son, Cairns basket baller James Mitchell. James was a primary school student when his parents died tragically, and Linda felt it was important that he be involved in the plans for the park refurbishment. “It’s those emotional connections that actually build the communities,” says Linda. “It’s doing the things in the communities that aren’t all about the hard infrastructure,” she adds.

“That project was a massive one to get over the line,” she says.

Planning to run for re-election in March, Linda hopes to be able to continue working for the community.

Another notable project that Linda spearheaded was the acquisition of land above Bel Air Estate earmarked for residential development. Rezoned as Open Space, the land now forms the Green Arrow

Living by her motto of “Live hard, work hard, play hard…or go home”, I don’t see this energetic councillor slowing down anytime soon.

It’s a Labour of Love

i n t e r v i e w

Words by Michelle Stacpoole

Curtis Pitt is a comic book fan.

The Queensland Treasurer and Member for Mulgrave admits to being a bit controversial in that he likes both Marvel and DC comics, alluding to the friendly rivalry that exists between the two comic universes. “Above all else though I’m a mad Star Wars fan. I cannot wait until the 17th of December,” he laughs, referring to the impending release of the next movie in the Star Wars franchise. Given this revelation, it is not surprising that before entering into a career in the public service and politics, Pitt was the regional marketing manager for Birch Carroll and Coyle cinemas. “I’m still a movie buff. Any chance I get for mum and dad to babysit the kids, I’ll take Kerry to see a movie,” he says. It’s 7.30am when I meet Pitt at the Communities for Children Christmas meeting. With an itinerary for the day that stretches well into the evening, I ask him how his young family copes with the long hours and travel required for his role in the public eye. “I have the most supportive wife in the world. Kerry is an extraordinary woman. She has to put up with an awful lot while I’m away, so I’m very, very fortunate,” he says. To ensure that when he is home he gets the opportunity to spend uninterrupted time with Kerry and his children, six-year old son Tristan and daughters four-year old Layla, and two-year old Kobi, Pitt often disconnects from political life by leaving his phone in another room. He also Facetimes his family at least three times throughout the day. “I don’t get a lot of time with them, but it’s that old saying, quality versus quantity. I’d still love a bit more quantity, but I do make the most of every second I get,” he says. The Pitt’s journey into parenthood has not been without its challenges, with the stillbirth of their first child Isabel in 2008. United in their grief, the devastating experience brought the already close couple even closer. Acknowledging that the grieving process was absolutely necessary, taking life one day at a time enabled Pitt to slow down and reset his focus on the future. “I’ve always got to be thinking about Isabel in everything I’m doing, because I think if we hadn’t lost her I may still be doing this job, but I probably wouldn’t be. My whole life was changed in a big way,” he says.

15

The Pitt’s established the Ride for Isabel, an annual bike ride to raise money for Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Support (SANDS), a charity providing support and assistance to families who have experienced the death of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth, newborn death or other pregnancy loss, and of which Pitt is the Patron. Pitt considered his role as Mental Health Minister in the former Labor government as a perfect fit, given his passion for opening dialogue on things people don’t like to talk about, particularly around mental health issues. “People’s emotional well being is the foundation well and truly about how so many things factor into our lives,” he says. Pitt’s insight into the realisation that there is always a backstory at play in daily life is reflected during a mid morning engagement at Balaclava State School. “It’s always important to think behind the problem and think about what else could be making somebody do the things they do,” he says to a class of year six students. At the school to announce the funding for maintenance and upgrades to schools across Far North Queensland, Pitt also talks to students about the importance of adaptability in a changing world, with new career opportunities constantly being presented. When I ask Pitt about his career adaptability over the years, he recounts a discussion he had decades ago with the then Queensland Premier Wayne Goss. According to Pitt, Goss, who at that point in time already had a successful career as a lawyer before becoming premier, told him that he will have more than one career in his lifetime, and that he will need to be flexible. It was a poignant moment for Pitt, and looking back he feels that he has never been wedded to any particular job.

“I don’t think work is just something you do to make a living. I think you have to be passionate about what you do, but if I went and did something else tomorrow, I’d go and give 110% to whatever job it is,” he says. Following his father’s footsteps into a career in politics may not have been something Pitt always considered (his father is former Member for Mulgrave Warren Pitt MP, who served in ministerial roles for Premiers Wayne Goss, Peter Beattie and Anna Bligh before his retirement), but it is something he is very passionate about. “Politics is all about people. That’s why I love what I do. If you

take away everything, it just comes back to people and making sure that there’s a degree of happiness in what they’re doing. Every road leads back to that point, and it always comes back to that common element – making sure that people are at the heart of your decision making,” he says. Pitt’s approach as that of a modern politician working as a broker between agendas has seen him unify with federal LNP member for Leichardt Warren Entsch in a bipartisan fight to see Cairns secure the lucrative Australian Defence Department’s Pacific Patrol Boat Replacement tender. If successful, the bid will create hundreds of jobs in Cairns, and lead to new capital investment in the area. As we leave his afternoon appointment at Norship Marine, where the Courier Mail received the exclusive story on the bipartisan alliance, Pitt talks about the importance of securing what is referred to as ‘The Cairns Solution’. “This is a three decade story for what we can achieve. The bid is that important,” he says. Pitt’s pride in North Queensland is evident. He may be the Treasurer, Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, as well as Acting Minister for the Education, Tourism, Major Events, Small Business, and the Commonwealth Games portfolios, yet at the heart of it all he is a proud kid from Gordonvale. “I’m in a unique role because senior people generally aren’t from regional Queensland, and particularly not from as far north as Cairns,” he says, citing former Treasurer and Member for Cairns Keith Delacy, as the last example twenty years ago. “Being at the cabinet table is a great thing in itself, but being part of the leadership team with myself, Jackie Trad and Annastacia Palaszczuk, means that on the big decisions, we’ll always have a strong voice at the table,” adds Pitt. As we drive to the next appointment on the Treasurer’s agenda, a meeting with Port stakeholders after Pitt helped broker the compromise on responsible dredging permits for Trinity Inlet, I refer back to our earlier conversation on Star Wars, and ask him what character he most relates to. “Probably Mace Windu. We share the same hairstyle,” laughs Pitt.

GSL:

A GOOD START TO LIFE

STARTED FIVE YEARS AGO AS A VISION AND NOW, IT’S A THRIVING REALITY. “WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?” MUSED LYNDSEY KOTSCH, DIRECTOR OF GSL. “GSL WAS MY BABY IN THE BEGINNING; NOT ANYMORE.”

Lyndsey is a qualified educator and Occupational Therapist. She is joined by her husband, Rudolf, who is also a Teacher and Nettie Herselman, who brings a wealth of experience in HR Management. “Together with our admin team, support team and intern psychologists, we are a crew with a mission.” GSL started out in 2011 as a social venture, with a concept around supporting vulnerable children and young people, living in our community. Our definition of ‘a good start to life’ means: • living in a safe and nurturing home, • attending and learning at school, and • enjoying and being a part of community The most vulnerable children and young people are those who have, or are at risk of developing, a disability and/or mental health disorder, and have behaviours that challenge others. “In our short history we have shared in the lives of many,” Lyndsey reflected. “We have given families and their children a break from each other when they’re feeling tired; provided care when relationships are not at their best; and, mentored and worked to build skills in parents and their child so their family could come back together. We have provided therapy for parents and young children preparing for school entry;

specialist tutoring for students of all ages; holiday programs with a touch of disabilityfocused support for school aged children and their families; and school leavers programs for young adults with additional needs getting ready for adulthood. It’s been an amazing five years!” And now the team are preparing for more. “GSL is now a Host Provider for people who have individualised funds under Your Life, Your Choice” “We are very excited about the National Disability Services Scheme, and, we are getting ready.” In 2016 GSL is moving into multiple sites in McCormack Street, Manunda. “We’ll be able to spread out,” laughed Lyndsey. “We’ve been so cramped in our current premises on Martyn Street – we’ve practically been working on each other’s knees!” “It’s going to mean big changes,” reflected Lyndsey “but we’ve always known growth and change and been able to keep the needs of local families as our priority. In this way, nothing will be different.” Visit us on www.gslservices.com.au

We were very fortunate growing up

Ray David Murphy PH O T O B Y: MI C K FUH RI M A N N

Pride I NTE RV I E W

of Cairns

Brothers Ray and David Murphy chat to Michelle Stacpoole about football, real estate, their plans for the future and what it means to be Rookie of the Year The close bond between Ray and David Murphy is evident when we start chatting, as they laugh and joke around with each other while discussing injuries inflicted in the name of brotherly love.

While David would like to play football professionally, he is enjoying his time as a cadet assistant valuer at property valuation firm Herron Todd White. “I’m hoping that at the end of this year I do get a formal offer to play for a NRL club, but if that doesn’t happen then I’m still happy doing what I’m doing here,” he says.

“The reason David’s got so many scars is not just from football,” laughs Ray as he recounts a story from childhood involving watermelon, a race to the kitchen and stitches from when he “may or may not” have tripped David.

Both Ray and David credit their hard working parents Bill and Sharyon for instilling a strong work ethic and always encouraging them to follow opportunities as they are presented.

“Oh yeah, he was terrible. Mum and Dad thought that he was the golden boy, but behind the scenes he was always stirring me so I looked like a devil child,” adds David.

“We were very fortunate growing up,” says David.

Sibling rivalry aside, the Murphy boys are on the path to success, each receiving accolades in their chosen fields. Ray has won The Cairns Post Rookie of the Year Award for both 2014 and 2015, awarded to the agent who has been working for less than a year and has sold the most real estate advertising packages. He also took out the coveted The Cairns Post Auction Champion Award. At just twenty-four years old, this is a considerable accomplishment. “The main achievement was the auctions award, because I was against people who have been selling property for twenty-five years,” says Ray. A career in real estate was not always on the cards for the eldest Murphy brother, initially accepted to study business at Griffith University. A keen traveller, he decided instead to move from their home town of Hervey Bay to Cairns, where he landed a job as a receptionist at Re/Max and quickly worked his way up to his current role as General Manager of New Business and Development. “I’ve found my passion. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else,” says Ray.

“Our parents were our best role models. Mum and Dad have earned their success themselves, and we appreciate that you have to work hard to get what you want,” adds Ray. For David, being scouted straight from high school to play for the Bulldogs in the NRL set him on his path. Released from his contract with the Bulldogs after twelve months to enable him to move to Cairns, David was picked up by Northern Pride, and received the Rookie of the Year Award for 2015. “I played 22 games in my first year, so I think that’s why I won it. You don’t normally play that many in your first year in the cup,” says David, referring to the Intrust Super Cup, Queensland’s premier rugby league competition. Understanding that a career in rugby league has an expiry date, twenty-yearold David is thinking long term, studying a business degree majoring in Property Economics. “You’ve got to have a back up plan,” he says.

21

CairnsLife

Always looking ahead, the Murphy brothers have a five-year plan. David hopes to be a registered property valuer and playing football professionally, while Ray aims to continue his real estate success opening his own agency, either with Re/Max or out on his own. Supporting each other in their endeavours, the brothers are complimentary in their praise. David cites Ray’s strong work ethic and generosity among his qualities, while Ray acknowledges David’s determination is a key to his success. “He is very focused, and when he wants something, he will work toward it,” says Ray. I have every confidence that the title of Rookie of the Year is merely the beginning for this dynamic duo.

Advancing Cairns

We are approaching

the Season M A R K M AT T H E W S / / C H I E F E X E C U T I V E / / A D VA N C E C A I R N S We are approaching ‘the season’. The wet season, the festive season, the silly season. Maybe we are already in it. Year end provides a time for reflection, renewal and perhaps reward, for family, friends, staff and others. A time for preparation for the year ahead, planning your business and personal development, and if you ever succumb to it, making new year’s resolutions. There’s a much darker side to the year end, and it’s often something overlooked in our merriment and congratulations. It’s also the violent season, where domestic violence incidents rise considerably. So much for all that fun and frivolity. But such issues are not only occurring around this time of the year, they just increase markedly. We rarely consider domestic violence issues at work – it’s something that may happen at home, or outside of the workplace, and not the problem of the work team or leadership. Or is it? For a business, domestic violence is a productivity issue, a safety issue, and a reputation issue. If business leaders see it in this context, then it surely becomes a serious issue for business.

Distractions, disruptions, and poor attendance all impact business operations.

your culture. Culture and strategy go hand in hand.

Open workplaces may present a risk to staff who are victims of domestic violence through harassment or stalking during business hours.

So how can your culture support domestic violence issues? How do your colleagues in your business respond to issues of domestic violence, particularly where there are perhaps clear signs of issues? What happens when an issue is raised with you or your staff ? How will you handle it?

Cases that attract media attention may also present reputational risk for a business. Whilst perhaps not directly related, where employees are named as staff of a particular businesses, all of a sudden, the business becomes part of the case. Collateral damage perhaps. So what can you do? Firstly, your business culture is the foundation for success. Not just in terms of staff welfare, but also in terms of staff performance. Management consultant Peter Drucker coined the term “culture eats strategy for breakfast” I would contend that culture eats strategy for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Strategy is the goals, objectives and activities of your organisation. Culture is the values, practices and behaviours. You must have organisational alignment – both culture and strategy are interconnected. Your organisational culture is probably your only sustainable point of difference. Anyone can steal your strategy. Nobody can copy

23

CairnsLife

It comes back to an issue of leadership within organisations. The conversation must start somewhere. Providing a protective environment within the workplace where issues can be discussed and not discriminated against is also key to success. Continuing the conversations, developing policies that respond to issues, providing leave for affected staff, and understanding the local resources available for referral are all positive measures. Workplace programs such as white ribbon accreditation provides training and resources to actively prevent and respond to domestic violence. I wish you Seasons Greetings, a safe, sharing and compassionate Christmas and New Year. White Ribbon Program www.whiteribbon.org.au

Becoming Nicole; The Transformation of an American Family Author: Amy Ellis Nutt The inspiring true story of a transgender girl, her identical twin brother, and an ordinary American family’s extraordinary journey to understand, nurture, and celebrate the uniqueness in us all, from the Pulitzer Prize–winning science reporter for The Washington Post When Wayne and Kelly Maines adopted identical twin boys, they thought their lives were complete. But it wasn’t long before they noticed a marked difference between Jonas and his brother, Wyatt. Jonas preferred sports and trucks and many of the things little boys were “supposed” to like; but Wyatt liked princess dolls and dress-up and playing Little Mermaid. By the time the twins were toddlers, confusion over Wyatt’s insistence that he was female began to tear the family apart. In the years that followed, the Maineses came to question their long-held views on gender and identity, to accept and embrace Wyatt’s transition to Nicole, and to undergo an emotionally wrenching transformation of their own that would change all their lives forever.

The disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a middle-aged man, almost a quarter-century apart: what could connect them? Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago . . . and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it.

5

Six of Crows Author: Leigh Bardugo

On September 2, 2013, at the age of sixty-four, Diana Nyad emerged onto the sands of Key West after swimming 111 miles, nation to nation, Cuba to Florida, in an epic feat of both endurance and human will, in fifty-three hours. Diana carried three poignant messages on her way across this stretch of shark-infested waters, and she spoke them to the crowd in her moment of final triumph:

1. Never, ever give up.
2. You’re never too old to chase your dreams.
3. It looks like a solitary sport, but it’s a Team.

Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price-and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone... A convict with a thirst for revenge. A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager. A runaway with a privileged past. A spy known as the Wraith. A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums. A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes. Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction--if they don’t kill each other first.

Mark Matthews GETTING STUFF DONE Mark Matthews, Chief Executive of Advance Cairns, gives Cairns Life an insight into the book at the top of his reading list. I was drawn to Sam Harrop’s Getting Stuff Done for two reasons. Firstly, here’s a local guy taking a big step to publish a book.. truly taking his title to heart! Go for it Sam! And secondly, we all struggle with distractions, important or otherwise, and I wanted to know if Sam provided ideas that would keep me focussed on outcomes. Getting Stuff Done is a practical 7 step guide to planning, focusing on the right things and keeping that focus on results. Sam prefaces this guide with a call to accountability for outcomes, not just responsibility for actions. The 7 steps that follow is the framework to achieve accountability and results. We all get busy doing ‘things’ which we believe are important. Sam asks right up front ‘why?’ you want to achieve something. Being clear on ‘why?’ improves your chance of success and helps you develop the changes you need to achieve it. My favourite quote from the book is “Make peace with imperfection, focus on progress.” I have often said similarly, you don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going. We are often victims of our desire for perfection, missing the opportunity to learn and develop a product or service as we execute. In the Natural Resource Management world, it’s called Adaptive Management. One of the things I liked about Sam’s book is the easy to read style which could apply to any business small, large or solo, and to your personal life. It’s a practical guide to Getting Stuff Done. Gardening

MAGNIFICENT

Tree Frogs with Matt Mitchley

Have you ever wondered where all the frogs have gone? Maybe you would like to entice them back to your garden with the help of a little water.

A favourite habitat of the Whitelipped tree frog (Litoria infrafrenata) and the Green tree frog (Litoria caerulea) happens to be our own backyard. Although we are fortunate to have these wonderful amphibians live with us, unless you have a creek in your garden they might need a little encouragement to stay year round. Frogs need a suitable place to court and lay their eggs. With all the advice we are given in the Far North about removing mosquito breeding sites and avoiding a ‘free for all’ for cane toads, our frogs have few places around our homes to successfully breed.

Matt Mitchley is a registered Horticulturalist with the Australian Institute of Horticulture and the owner of Designer Garden Company www.designergarden.com.au

45

There are endless choices and inventive ways to create the perfect water feature that encourages frogs, and this can be achieved without having breeding sites for mosquitos and cane toads. Toads generally can’t jump higher than 30cm and although they can climb,

CairnsLife

they cannot walk up flat or slippery surfaces like frogs can. Mosquitos will lay their eggs in any standing body of water, so small native and locally available fish like the Spotted Blue-eye and Rainbowfish can be employed to consume every egg and wriggler- they are nature’s own mosquito defenders. Water bowls and features on the market these days are inexpensive, light and easy to move and there are also many ways to make your own. They come in all shapes and sizes and if you can find a site in your garden that has some morning sun and afternoon shade, with a few water weeds and fish, you will create the perfect environment to entice frogs back to your garden. As we are approaching our wet season, now is the perfect time to get into your garden and make your very own frog habitat.

This month we will look at the 457 temporary business visa program and its requirements. The 457 Temporary Work (Skilled) program is available for employers to sponsor overseas workers to work in Australia in a skilled position on a temporary basis. The employer may chose the length of the visa sponsorship for the visa applicant, anywhere up to a maximum visa time of 4 years. There are three steps to the 457 program process. The first involves lodging a sponsorship application to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). The sponsorship approves the sponsoring business as a sponsor and this sponsorship, when approved, stays in place for five years. There is a list of sponsorship obligations attached to the 457 program that the employer must comply with and these obligations apply to the main applicant and any accompanying

family members. The employer must also meet training requirements for the sponsorship. The second step involves lodging a nomination application nominating the position to be filled. The nominated position must meet a minimum skill level and be on the gazetted list of occupations. In addition there is salary threshold that must be met and it must be shown that the nominated salary is the market salary rate and what would be paid to an Australian Citizen filling the same position. The final step of the 457 visa is to lodge the visa application nominating the person to be sponsored for the position. The visa applicant must have the skills, qualifications and employment background to match those required for the nominated position. The visa applicant is also required to meet English language proficiency, licensing, health and character requirements and also hold private health insurance.

Employers should seek advice from a registered migration agent to discuss their eligibility for the 457 Temporary Work (Skilled) visa program.

Oasis 312 From the moment you enter via the New Guinea Rosewood gate house, it is apparent that the Oasis 312 is a home of superior quality. With its resort style layout, the 312m2 property by Dixon Homes gives the feeling of being on holiday. Permanently. “The concept is modernizing a Balinese style home,” says Andrew Thomas from Dixon Homes. “Where the Balinese style of detached pod type rooms is less functional, we’ve revolutionized that,” he adds. By taking the essence of Bali living and modernizing it for families, Dixon Homes have presented a four bedroom house that wraps around a central outdoor space. With the focus of the home being the swimming pool and alfresco area, the New Guinea Rosewood bi-fold doors on all living spaces allow for a seamless flow of inside out living. The master suite has an oversize walk in robe, stunning feature wall and luxurious ensuite opening onto the pool area. The kitchen contains a fully integrated fridge, Caesar stone concrete bench tops and a butlers pantry. A separate guest suite offers privacy for visitors, and full length glass louvers allow for cross ventilation throughout the home. Located on a 600m2 block at Castleton Entrance, Smithfield Village, the Oasis 312 offers a relaxed lifestyle with all the luxuries.

Journey our

At Samsara you’ll often hear us talking about experiencing the journey. This isn’t just a theoretical concept this is actual too. We literally travel to the four corners to uncover the best, most interesting, intriguing and exciting homewares to bring to our showroom. Much of our stock is completely unique, sourced from the less travelled areas of Asia and the Indian Subcontinent. All of our pieces are selected because of their intrinsic beauty and inherent quality, and with these values in mind, the arrival of a fresh container is always an event for us. Carefully un-packing these wonderful artefacts and exposing them for the first time to their new home in the Australian sun is always exciting. Our most recent delivery is no exception, bringing with it over three-hundred fantastic pieces from deep within the southern Chinese provinces of Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan amongst others. From traditional high gloss lacquered, to intricate handprinted frescos, the furniture items we now have available are a feast of tactile and visual pleasure. Including hand crafted furniture, genuine period Chinese antiques and traditional style porcelains, we delight in inviting you come and share our enthusiasm for this fantastic collection and join us on our perpetual Samsara journey.

If you don’t change you don’t grow

WHAT’S TRENDING

for 2016?

Maggie from Posh Lifestyle shares her views on what’s happening with home furnishing trends around Australia for 2016. I saw this comment once which says it all. “Retailing is all about change, because consumers change and so do their tastes. If you don’t change you don’t grow”. As the year draws to a close, we can’t help but start looking ahead. So, what will be the ultimate in home style for 2016? It’s time to shine It is throw back time to modern designs from the 50s, 60s and 70s and will make a huge impact in room décor. Embrace the retro bling! Choosing items that have been recycled or repurposed will be very popular. The coming year is your home’s chance to shine with a touch of metallic. From acid wash metallic cow hide rugs to brass cylindrical vases for your flowers through to brushed brass side tables, there aren’t many homewares or interiors products that don’t work well in metallic tones. Metallics should be considered the jewellery for your home with things like drawer handles and copper catchalls through to candle jars. Bringing the outside in Nature, especially in the tropics, has a calming effect and adding greenery inside can add life all around you. Another important trend is considering sustainability when making purchases. Solar energy has taken off and the whole world is becoming more aware of the effect humans have on everything around us. “We all long to be connected back to nature and back to food, and to learn and teach our children where food really comes from.” Practical items become features The practical parts of your home no longer have to be boring, as more interesting designs become

accessible. It’s all about creating conversation. People want something they can socially share to start that conversation. Many interior designers are shifting towards the reinvention of everyday items as a way of reinvigorating living spaces. Connection makes life seamless The connected home – or smart home, as it’s been dubbed – is all about making life easier. You’ll see technology create lifestyle changes that couldn’t have been imagined even a few years ago. A trend we are seeing is the demand for smart home products that solve specific problems related to safety, security or in-home convenience. Accessories are art Accessorising a room is now a form of self-expression in more ways than one. Emerging in 2016 is the appreciation of living art - people are moving away from traditional patterns to abstract and expressive designs. This is the time to get really creative with the accessories in your home. Colours are interesting 4 trend-setting colour palettes recently released are: Throwbacks to 60s and 70s and Futuristic inspiration. This is inspired by a growing focus on space travel and research. The dark blues and purples are contrasted with flashes of red, pink, coral and space age metallics. We are looking back to the 60s and 70s. Browns and caramels are making a comeback, as are the more vibrant retro colours. creating a look that suits your personality: “Colour combinations can be used in unexpected ways to help create a more youthful and playful space.” Nature, with soft greens, beige and grey. These colours together creates a beautiful, tranquil setting that’s easy to live with in most rooms within the home.” White on White White is timeless especially in the tropics. It will never date. As you can see 2016 will be an exciting year for change and innovation.

It was during a two-year cooking sojourn through South East Asia that chef Ferdi Salvana indulged his creative flair for plating his own style of Asian food.

affordable family friendly environment. “I wanted to do all different Asian cuisines while combining with my own style,” says Ferdi.

“Although I’ve done European style cooking, my passion has always been Asian cuisine,” says Ferdi.

“That’s why we call it modern Asian cuisine, because it’s blending all the different cultures of Asia together,” he adds.

Wherever I’ve worked I’ve always had that Asian influence in what I cook

Mr Soy Boy is open for breakfast daily for group bookings of 10 or more, and lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday. The menu offers handcrafted delicacies such as hand made spicy sausage and house smoked bacon, along with the more traditional Asian fare of roast duck, wok stir-fries, and Pan-Asian curries. Ferdi’s house made small goods are also available for purchase.

Training in Melbourne at fine dining restaurants under high profile chefs such as Michelin starred Dean Cambray, and James Tan at the Crown Casino; Ferdi spent time as the junior sous chef at the renowned Versace Restaurant on the Gold Coast, and was the sous chef at the five star Bedarra Island Resort. It was the tropical climate that ultimately attracted Philippines born Ferdi to Cairns, where he established the kitchens at local restaurants C’est Bon, Mangosteens and, more recently, Villa Romana.

Moving forward, Ferdi is keen to focus on developing his business in the catering field. “I did some master classes and worked in Luang Probang in Laos. That’s where I learnt how a small environment can cater for big numbers of people with only minimal staff,” he says.

A desire to go back to his passion of providing high quality, modern Asian cuisine led Ferdi and his wife Lanya to establish Mr Soy Boy in Earlville. Open since September, the restaurant reflects Ferdi’s unique vision in a relaxed and

A group of local artists have joined together to bring the Mexican festival of Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) to Cairns. Although different in origin to Halloween, the festival shares several similarities, including the decorating of images with skeletons. Co-ordinated by professional make-up artist Sara Homes, the group wanted to use this symbolic event to showcase their various areas of expertise. “We wanted to introduce our work to prospective clients and the general public in a fun and visually spectacular way,” says Sarah. Sarah has ten years experience working in fashion and television in Melbourne, and was drawn to the visual impact of the festival. According to Sarah, the festival in its traditional format is a celebration in which people can remember the passing of loved ones and celebrate how much a part of us they still are.

We would like to see Day of the Dead a regular part of the calendar here in Cairns, and it’s Mexican roots help us embrace the multiculturalism that Cairns is renown for,” she adds. Symbolizing mortality, morality and the circle of life and death, the skulls are whimsical and colourful, and not intended to be frightening. “The production and photo-shoot was a great success, providing a fantastic array of images and experiences,” says Sarah.

The team: Sarah Holmes is a professional makeup artist, and for the last 10 years has been working on projects in television, commercials and media, making her work bold, eye catching and colourful. Lindy, owner of Pure Style Photography moved to Cairns from country Victoria 4 years ago. She is extraordinarily passionate about portraying her vision through camera and lens. Evert, a FNQ local who specialises in landscape and portrait photography, aims his ideals in the industry with cutting edge shoots and unique ideas. Jessie, owner of ‘Forever Yours Bouquet’ is a new small business owner. Creating custom bouquets and flower arrangements, her flowers are handcrafted from various papers, giving her clients a great keepsake item for their special occasion. Carly Barfoot has been a professional makeup artist for the last 8 years. Her business Makeup by Carly has blossomed into a high clientele base for Weddings from Cairns to Port Douglas, and her infectious personality and smile exudes a love for the craft. Ashlee Piper has had over 10 years experience in the hairdressing industry. Performing in all areas from fashion cut and colouring, weddings, photoshoots and fashion magazines puts her in high demand.

Jazz Up North Series Ellington’s Orchestra and now shares her famous talents in her home town.

The highly anticipated Jazz Up North Series for 2016 has been announced featuring a coveted line-up including the likes of Harry James Angus (of The Cat Empire fame) and revered songstress Kate Ceberano, to name a few. Next year’s jazz programming is special – it marks 10 years of the Jazz Up North Series, which is focused on bringing the best contemporary and traditional acts for the genre to the North. “We have you, the audience, to thank for that,” says Tanks Arts Centre programmer Roz Pappalardo about reaching the 10-year milestone. “Every player who walks through those Tank 5 wrought iron doors, from sound check to the last note of the night, is captivated by the sound, the lights and most importantly, YOU, their rapt audience. I am excited to continue to bring you a bevy of legends, emerging and established, as we move into the next ten years.”

The mid-year programming is another fantastic example of the music the Jazz Up North Series brings to Cairns. On Friday 3 June Juliana Areias, dubbed the ‘Bossa Nova Baby’ comes to Tanks for the first time. The Perth-based singer and songwriter brings a new edge to traditional Brazilian rhythms in a show that has been selling out nation-wide. One of the most highly anticipated shows for the series is that of Harry James Angus from The Cat Empire on Friday 26 August. If you have seen one of his solo performances you will already be familiar with his stories of buried bones, murderous stove cooks, sentimental corporate bankers and mystical cricket players. This show promises to be that and much more and is set to sell-out.

What will also make this series very cool indeed is the new climate control that is currently being installed in Tank 5. The venue that we have all come to love, even on those tropical nights, will soon be cooler than ever.

Steve Clisby, who is no stranger to performing at Tanks and is now a household name, heads back to the North on Friday 9 September. He was the best kept secret in Australia until his appearance on The Voice last year where he captivated audience with his soulful voice.

Across the years there have been some incredible, sold-out performances as part of the Jazz Up North Series and the 2016 program looks set to continue that tradition in its 10th year. Kicking off the programming on Friday 15 April is the incomparable Kate Ceberano. Much awarded and much loved, Kate is considered a treasure on the national music scene and has been defying genres for the past four decades. This will be an unforgettable sparkling performance that is guaranteed to sell out well in advance.

Wrapping up the program is George Washingmachine on Friday 21 October. From classical violin to rhythm and blues, and from musical theatre to Shakespeare, his talent knows no bounds. He will be performing with gypsy jazz ensemble Feel the Manouche. The Jazz Up North Series subscription is on sale now at Ticketlink. Visit www.tanksartscentre.com for more information.

CAIRNS PERFORMING

ARTS CENTRE

By early 2018, Cairns will have a purposebuilt, state-of-the-art regional performing arts centre. More than triple the size in floor space of the Cairns Civic Theatre, the Cairns Performing Arts Centre (CPAC) will address the shortfalls of the existing facility and provide a greatly enhanced audience experience, as well as back-of-house technical components expected of a modern performance space. As well as the 941-seat main auditorium, CPAC will include a 400-seat studio theatre. Added to this is an outdoor performance space with room for more than 2500 people (seated), just across Florence Street in the redeveloped Munro Martin Parklands. This combination of better facilities, increased audience capacity and technology to share experiences across the three venues, will ensure Cairns can attract the very best in terms of touring shows while providing a platform for our home-grown performers to showcase and hone their skills.

Wine Review

INE of the month MICHAEL RYAN BRANCH MANAGER AT MORGAN’S CAIRNS Photo By Mick Fuhrimann

Winemaker and avid oenological researcher John Wilson contends that Edmund Mazure was the first to make sparkling red wine in Australia in 1888. Sparkling red wine is a uniquely Australian concoction and remains the only wine style we can call our own. Predictably, my European mates think it is some sort of bizarre antipodean joke, however I think both Alessandro and Max (le frog) are big closet drinkers of the stuff. After all, what’s not to like?? But even in Australia, opinion is polarised and it has taken the style almost 30 years to recover from the “Cold Duck” abomination of the 70’s and 80’s. Personally I love sparkling red wine. I love that it is our unique style and I love the mouth feel of chilled red wine with a delicate fine bead of bubbles. There – I’ve said it. The style is also a great drink for the tropics, refreshing, lusciously crisp and thankfully, cold. Despite the fact that this wine style has been around for so long, recent years have seen a surge in popularity. This has led to a broadening of the quality spectrum with the key to class being the integrity of the base wine. The great

examples, which are made in the bottle as per methode champenoise, even go as far as adding a dosage of liquer port to add complexity and palate weight. The best sparkling reds are a wonderful blend of premium Shiraz grapes (although other varietals are used) and quality winemaking.

Bests Great Western Sparkling Siraz. From the same region as the revered Seppelts stable of sparkling reds, this is a wonderful example of a bells and whistles sparkling shiraz. It is brimming with unctuous dark berry fruits with peppery spice and hints of chocolate. Extended maturation on lees adds complexity with a truly indulgent dosage of Bests Liqueur Muscat to stamp that palate weight. The bubbles lift and clean on the finish. Better leave one under the Christmas tree for Santa..

Justin Hohlne It was a desire to create a neighbourhood meeting house for locals to enjoy casual yet refined dining that led Sam Byrd and his father Buddy to open NOA restaurant last year. With strong backgrounds in restaurants and hotels, NOA is the second restaurant venture in Edgehill for the duo. “Basically, NOA was Sam’s idea; he is the drive behind it. With a great team around us and a very supportive community it has become our second success here at Edgehill,” says Buddy. The pair are the original owners of Ozmosis Café, which they sold in 2012 to focus on their new venture. Joining Sam and Buddy is Chef Justin Hohlne. fine dining restaurant at Perisher Blue in the Snowy Mountains, Justin is an advocate of the concept of the ‘small plate’ and the sharing of food around the table. Creating a menu that draws on local ingredients and seasonal produce put together with care and attention, Justin believes that success as a chef can come down to a lot of hard work.

It is also always learning and thinking of something new to try out, as well has having a good team around you, he says.

NOA’s Apple Cider Sorbet Ingredients 175g caster sugar 425g water rind and juice of a lemon 120mls cider 1 egg white, lightly whisked Method 1. For the stock syrup, add sugar and water in a saucepan. Dissolve the sugar and add the rind of the lemon and boil for 2-3 mins. Drain the syrup and discard the rind.

2. For the sorbet, add the lemon juice and the cider to the syrup and place in the freezer for 30 mins to cool. From there either pour into an ice cream maker and churn for 30-40 mins, adding the egg whites after 10 mins. If you don’t have an ice cream machine, leave in the freezer until it starts to freeze around the edges. Use an electric beater to whisk the mixture and add the whites, then return it to the freezer and repeat until firm.

Where’s

Wally? WORDS BY: M ICHE L L E S TA CP O O L E PHOTOS COU R TE S Y O F S U NL O V E R RE E F C R UI SES

How do you get up close and personal with a Humpheaded Maori Wrasse without getting your hair wet? It’s a question I’m about to find the answer to as I board Sunbird, the catamaran operated by Sunlover Reef Cruises out to Moore Reef. Cruising in air-conditioned comfort on the two hour journey to the outer reef I meet Iris, a dive instructor with over 15 years experience. Iris has sought me out to conduct a safety briefing on Seawalker Platform Helmet Diving. The yellow wristband given to me when I checked in gave me away as a Seawalker guest. According to Iris, Seawalker Platform Helmet Diving is ideal for people who can’t swim very well yet still want to explore underwater, enabling breathing through the nose and mouth. “It’s a great experience to be underwater, and with the amount of fish out there it’s like you’re in a large fish tank,” she says. During a detailed safety briefing complete with laminated picture cards on the do’s and don’ts of helmet diving, Iris explains that the helmet, although weighing 38kg above water, is merely 4kg once submerged. My shoulders breathe a sigh of relief. Once berthed at the pontoon on Moore Reef, I meander over to the dive station to prepare for my underwater adventure. Kitted out in a wetsuit, weight belt and these funny looking bootie things on my feet, I descend the stairs with a sharp intake of breath as I find myself chest deep in cool water.

“It’s meant to be 26 degrees in the water today,” says Vance, the dive instructor who guides me to my helmet.

lunch and indulge in more than my fair share of fresh prawns before meeting Pablo, a Marine Biologist and my Snorkel Safari guide.

As I submerge and equalize, the heavy feeling of the helmet dissipates, and I am able to take in my underwater surroundings while breathing freely.

My fear of sinking to the bottom post smorgasbord over-indulgence is abated, as Pablo requests that myself and the three other snorkellers on the tour hold onto a circular life buoy as he guides us out over the reef.

Resembling a conga line of NASA astronauts, my tour group slowly makes its way along the platform while schools of Trevally, Trigger Fish, Spangled Emperors and other species dart about us. When I reach the end of the platform I see him. A large Humpheaded Maori Wrasse named Wally. Listed as an endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the wrasse can grow up to 1.3m in length. Pausing near my helmet while the underwater photographer snaps away, Wally appears unfazed with the interaction.

He really is very curious and friendly,” says Iris later. As I make my way back to the stairs I manage to catch a glimpse of a spectacular Lion Fish, inconspicuously observing the scene from his position beneath the platform. With my twenty-minute tour complete and my hair still dry, I make my way to the buffet

Pausing to point out and discuss various corals, tropical fish, giant clams, and sea cucumbers, the 40 minute tour takes us out to where the reef drops off before we start circling back. On our way back to the pontoon we come across four large Bumphead Green Parrot Fish gnawing at the coral. According to Pablo, this is a rarity. “I’ve been snorkelling this part of the reef for over six months and I’ve only seen them four or five times,” he says. Back at the pontoon I head to a quiet corner to relax and dry off before heading down to the Underwater Observatory - just in time for the fish feeding frenzy. As my four hours on the reef come to an end, I board the Sunbird and head for one of the comfy couches inside. Looking around with heavy eyelids, I notice that I am not alone, as my fellow sun-kissed travellers settle in for a snooze on the trip back. Succumbing to the gentle lull of the waves, my eyes eventually close while visions of Wally, the Humpheaded Maori Wrasse, swim in my head. The writer travelled as a guest of Sunlover Reef Cruises

BE READY, CAIRNS Complacency kills

A shelter is your last resort

To stay or go? One of the key decisions you and your family or household will face in the event of a cyclone or other natural disaster is whether to evacuate. This is not a decision you want to be making at the last minute under the intense pressure of an emergency situation! In most cases, the safest thing to do in a cyclone is to shelter in place – that is to stay at home and ride it out with your household.

Cyclones develop off the Queensland coast every year. Fortunately, very few make landfall, and fewer still directly impact Cairns. It’s Murphy’s Law, however, that the one time you aren’t ready for a cyclone is the one time you will need to be! Complacency is a significant risk factor in Cairns when it comes to cyclones. Even people who have lived here only a short time can become “immune” to cyclone warnings assuming the latest storm won’t develop into a full-blown cyclone or that it will change its track to miss the city. Complacency comes in many forms, becoming more widespread each year we don’t have a cyclone or other major disaster. Just because the last one was “a long time ago” or has been forgotten, doesn’t mean it won’t happen again. What can start out simply as “waiting just a bit longer” to pack up the kids’ trampoline can quickly escalate to arriving at the supermarket when the shelves are empty or, tragically, not leaving home early enough to stay with family or friends outside the affected area. Being prepared is the key.

This means:

• Knowing the risks • Preparing your property before the wet season • Having an emergency plan for yourself, your family or household and your pets • Having an emergency kit with at least three days of supplies • Knowing your evacuation routes

In the Cairns region, evacuation is only advised if a storm surge is expected with a cyclone – not for wind alone. So if you live in a storm tide inundation area you need a plan to go somewhere safer. You should also consider evacuating if you live in a pre-1982 home or feel concerned for your safety. If you need to, or decide to, evacuate the best option is always to go to family, friends or colleagues outside threatened areas. If staying home, decide which room to shelter in. The best option is an internal room with few or small windows, such as the bathroom. Use mattresses and other bedding to protect yourself and make sure your household emergency kit is in the room for the duration of the event. It’s strongly advised to include everyone living with you, even young children, in preparing a household emergency plan. Your plan should identify where you will go if you decide to evacuate, the best route to get there and an emergency meeting point in case your home is cut off. Write these details down and add contact information for everyone in your house, as well as emergency contact details (school, doctor, vet, emergency services), and key information such as medication you might need and insurance.

These shelters are ONLY for people who have been advised to leave their location because of likely inundation caused by storm surge. If you live outside these areas you will be turned away. Proof of address is required for admission to shelters or other places of refuge. Public Storm Tide Cyclone Shelters are configured to accommodate the greatest number of people possible and to keep them safe. Comfort is not a priority. If you are admitted to a shelter you will be allocated a standard plastic chair. This 1.3m2 of space will be your home until the cyclone has passed. You will need to provide your own food, water and medication, and keep them, and all your personal belongings in a bag which fits under your chair. There are no cooking facilities. There are no showers. Pets are not allowed. Alcohol is forbidden. And you will need to sleep in your chair.

It might sound silly today to have this information documented in one place, but it will make sure you don’t forget things in the “panic” caused by a disaster.

What is storm surge ?

Can you survive for three days? You and your household will need to fend for yourselves. This means providing your own food, water and power for a minimum of three days. A well-stocked emergency kit will be your life-line.

You should have:

Storm surge is a rise in the ocean level caused by high winds pushing on the ocean’s surface and lower than normal air pressure from the cyclone. As a cyclone reaches the coast, huge winds may whip up the sea and push the dome of water over low-lying coastal areas. In other words the sea may reach much further inland than it does during high tide. If a storm surge coincides with a high tide the sea can travel even further inland, up to several kilometres. The damage caused in New York by Hurricane Sandy is a good example of what can happen when storm surge strikes. The height of the surge is strongly influenced by geographic factors such as the shape of the seabed and coastline, the intensity and angle of approach of the cyclone to the shore and prevailing currents. The Bureau of Meteorology gives advance warning of likely levels if a storm surge is expected, as part of its tropical cyclone advice and warning system. Emergency authorities will warn people in affected areas.

Being prepared for disasters – being more resilient – is a shared responsibility. As members of communities throughout Cairns, we all need to make our own preparations for whatever nature may bring. So be ready! If a cyclone, or other natural disaster, hits it could be 72 hours or more before basic services are restored. Cairns is a long way from other major sources of supplies and is also easily isolated. Roads will be impassable, water and sewer pipes will be broken, power lines will be down and shops and service stations are likely to have been destroyed, or at the least inundated with water. Communication channels will be dead ATMs won’t work, credit cards will be useless, and mobile phones will no longer provide the answer to all questions. Add to this, your home may be damaged to a greater or lesser extent.

There are three key ways to find out if you are in a storm tide surge zone.

Don’t wait!

Meter/power box: check the inside of your meter/power box cover for a storm surge sticker in red, orange or yellow.

Research and experience show that people who follow the advice provided, get ready early and follow their plan manage better during a disaster and start the recovery process more quickly.

On-line: use the Storm Tide Property Search tool on Council’s website (visit www.cairns. qld.gov.au/disaster then select tools). Maps: pick up a free map book at your nearest Council customer service centre. If you’re still not sure, call the Cairns Disaster Management Unit on 4044 3344.

Now is the time to write that plan, get those supplies, clear the yard and be ready to follow emergency instructions should they be issued.

Builder

New homes are your best chance in

cyclone SEASON It’s probably an opportune time to consider whether your home will be able to stand up to cyclones and future weather patterns similar to what we have experienced in the last few years. Is your current home built to cope with the kind of extremities of weather that we experience in North Queensland and do you understand what the cyclone ratings mean?

Maintenance of your home is one of many important factors that will affect the strength of cyclone resistant construction; dangerous trees overhanging your home may cause damage during high winds; insufficient site drainage may undermine footings and land stability.

The advantage of building a new home is that it is constructed to the current strict cyclonic building codes from the walls to the roof to the windows and even the tie down for a water tank. Although these engineering requirements will add to the cost of your home construction in a cyclonic area, it will give you peace of mind when a cyclone is nearby. There’s a reason why most of the newer buildings are still standing and it’s mainly the older buildings that have been affected by cyclones in the past 30 years. After cyclone Althea (Townsville on Christmas Eve, 1971) and cyclone Tracey (Darwin early on Christmas Day 1974) the Australian Building Codes were revised and much work was done on testing for cyclonic design wind speeds. As a result of this work stricter building codes were introduced in mid 80’s. All new construction must adhere to these compulsory standards. There are 5 categories for rating cyclones that range from Category 1 (mild) to Category 5 (most extreme). In cyclonic areas there are generally 3 categories for housing construction. These range from Category 1 (41 metres per second - a mild cyclone) to Category 3 (60 metres per second - an extreme cyclone). We should really be calling them by their correct description which is ‘design wind speed for housing construction depending on the surrounding terrain’ as that would save a lot of confusion. I say generally because the certifying engineer may deem it is necessary to design to a higher wind speed. These design wind speeds are also determined by the surrounding terrain. If there is some solid protection by the surrounding terrain within, say 500 metres, then it will help with protection of the home. If the home is out in the middle of a flat cane paddock, on the beachfront or on the edge of a hillside then it’s very open and will have little or no surrounding protection. So while the construction may be further from the coast than a built up suburb, the design wind speed could differ.

77

CairnsLife

My advice …. Talk to an experienced local builder or engineer and make sure you have taken all appropriate precautions. Building a new home is the best way to ensure you have the latest cyclonic construction methods covered.

Cairns Fertility Centre Established in 2009, Cairns Fertility Centre (CFC) is a dedicated reproductive specialist and gynaecological clinic, servicing Cairns and the surrounding region.

Founded by Dr John Yovich, Medical Director from PIVET Medical Centre in Perth and widely acknowledged for his pioneering IVF work in Western Australia, CFC is headed by Dr Sunthra Lingam. Dr Lingam had his undergraduate medical training and later postgraduate Obstetrics & Gynaecological training in Malaysia. He then underwent fellowship training in Reproductive Medicine under Dr Yovich in Perth. He has since completed his Masters in Reproductive Medicine from UNSW. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists ( RANZCOG ).

Dr Lingam acknowledges that in the field of fertility treatment a large number of patients receive a happy outcome however it can be challenging to others. “ Fertility treatment is a science, a bit of art as well, but it is still a science, and science is not exact,” he says “Unfortunately we can’t assist all couples, but we try to assist as many as we can” he adds. To ensure patients receive the best possible results, the clinical team works closely within the scientific team at CFC. “It’s not just clinical science, the laboratory also plays a major part. In fact the laboratory where fertilization occurs, is the key to success,” says Dr Lingam. Along with the laboratory, the Cairns Central Day Hospital (CCDH) is housed with the CFC. This enables CFC to fully integrate the various clinical, laboratory and procedural services under one roof. According to Dr Lingam, the team at CFC find their field of practice very rewarding.

According to Dr Lingam, offering fertility treatment in Cairns enables patients to access quality care without the additional expenses associated with travel.

“Every time a patient falls pregnant and the pregnancy continues and they bring their babies to term, it’s a unique moment. Every baby is special,” he says.

“Fertility treatment is not a short treatment. When you do an IVF cycle, it can take nearly two weeks or even longer, so if patients were to travel elsewhere it’s a significant cost with travel and accommodation” he says.

“We share in their joy.”

With us being here, it reduces the need for patients to go south he adds. 81

Passion The public have been so supportive and really love the relaxed atmosphere we’ve created Community Training Australia, founded by Toni Mehigan in 2004, is one of Australia’s leading Registered Training Organisations (RTO #31905) that provides Vocational Education and Training in the Community Services. The Rainforest Campus in Cairns is the most recent Campus to open in Australia. The Campus Manager is Anne Riley, who believes in the positive results that she gets from her Cairns students, be it in the classroom, in the field, or in the graduation ceremony. The courses available at The Rainforest Campus include Counselling, Child Care, Youth Work, and Case Management. With the high rate of graduates, Anne Riley is very pleased to be helping Cairns locals become involved in the helping professions. “The public have been so supportive and really love the relaxed atmosphere we’ve created,” she says. At Community Training Australia, there is extraordinary importance placed on each student’s individual needs, and the student support facilities are specialised to help students through what may be a new transition into the life of Vocational Education and Training. This way, Community Training Australia ensures that students feel comfortable with the ways they are learning, which allows the RTO to deliver high-quality course programs that include theoretical classes, as well as integrated-placement learning. Throughout the course, small classes and one-on-one tutorials are offered, depending on the students’ preferences.

85

As well, Community Training Australia offers student counselling, career guidance, tutoring, language and literacy support, and the opportunity to travel overseas while completing the course. Career guidance at Community Training Australia does help students to explore what they really want from their diploma. Plus, throughout the courses, staff can help students to look at their career options and/ or ambitions, and collaborate with one another to determine which course of action students could take to follow their chosen pathway. Often, past students have spoken with the RTO about their professional success, and kept in contact after graduating. Sometimes, it might be as simple as wanting to pursue further study (with Community Training Australia or maybe even at a tertiary institution). Otherwise, there are many avenues that students can take once their studies are completed. Those who study with the facility may decide to engage in indigenous services, multicultural services, youth services or aged care, just to name a few options. Thinking of

changing industries? Eva Grabner

In an ever fluctuating economy, I am speaking to more and more people interested in changing industries. It is always a question I ask candidates with a history in one industry ‘Are you open to changing industries?’; if they are, ‘What industries?’. This is an insightful question in itself, as I am always curious as to how ‘open’ they actually are. Have they thought about it before? I myself was faced with this nearly a decade ago. After nearly 20 years in hospitality and tourism I was burnt out and tired of the long hours, low pay and expectations on people in this industry. After moving from Europe to the US and working on 5 star cruise ships for 10 years, Australia’s culture around hospitality and tourism was shocking. It was (and still is in some cases) mediocre in its delivery yet expectations were extremely high. People in this industry do it for the love and not the pay, and it is the pay in hospitality that needs serious attention. The old saying ‘If you pay peanuts, expect monkeys’ is mostly true. I was desperate to get out of a declining industry but with no idea where to move next. HR was the obvious choice as I had HR skills and experience and had managed large teams. But what was there for me outside of hospitality?

mind, so after careful consideration and dialogue with the owner of a local agency, I decided to accept their offer of employment and so my career in a new industry began! The rest, they say, is history. I was mentored by an amazing woman and respected industry leader for three years before moving to Sydney and working for a very strong and respected Executive Recruitment firm, I soon realised that most recruiters are passionate about their jobs. When you think about it, what better job is there in the world than finding amazing leaders for businesses and placing leaders into their dream jobs? It’s the best job in the world. Hands down, and I love it! If you’re thinking about changing careers, speak with someone; a mentor, a recruiter, a friend, or someone you respect and is likely to help you think outside the box. You never know what crazy idea may unfold!

Firstly, I had to consider the following: 1. Was I willing to take a pay cut? 2. What was I passionate about? 3. What skills did I have? 4. Do I need to undertake further education? 5. Who in my network could provide advice and guide me? 6. Does my resume adequately reflect my experience?

Be open to something new; you never know where a new road may lead.

I spoke with a trusted recruitment agent about my dilemma. She then suggested ‘recruitment’. Recruitment wasn’t an industry I had even considered or was interested in (or was I?). I do, however, have an open

The Cairns Chamber’s recent Business Confidence and Growth Survey results were very positive. Most notably, 68% of respondents would advise others that now is a good time to invest in Cairns. 82% of respondents’ businesses performed either the same, stronger or much stronger than the previous 12 months. Profitability and turnover have also increased with 72% of respondents expecting an increase in profitability in the coming 12 months. Dream WORDS BY: MICHELLE STACPOOLE

The moment I walk into Tim and Lorraine Weaver’s stylish inner city apartment it is evident that the couple are keen travellers. Their passion for traversing the globe and immersing themselves in foreign cultures is reflected in the numerous artworks, prints and ornaments that adorn their walls and shelves. “That’s the Last Emperor’s Wife,” says Tim, describing an original parchment he purchased in China, now hanging alongside some prints Lorraine collected during a trip to Egypt with her belly dancing class. “I got waylaid by art students when I was coming out of Tiananmen Square, and they took me to this place where the lecturer in art told me that the state allows them one day in a year to sell off their artwork to get western currency, and that was the day,” he elaborates. Not surprisingly Tim 71, and Lorraine 61, both from Melbourne, met while on holiday in Townsville, when cupid’s arrow struck at a Valentine’s Day party. Planning to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary next year with a luxurious European sojourn taking in cities such as Helsinki, St Petersburg, Rome and Venice among others, the Weaver’s are a wonderful example of life getting better with age, especially with your best friend by your side. The couple moved to Cairns in 1989, where Tim, a graphic designer, worked predominantly in print and media until taking the position of Client Services Manager at Business Leisure Travel (BLT) two years ago. Lorraine, a registered nurse, has worked for 22 years at the Cairns Private Hospital, and is currently the After Hours Nurse Manager. While Tim and Lorraine had often toyed with the idea of living closer to the city for work, it wasn’t until their beloved Dobermans passed away that they felt they could trade their property in Gordonvale for something smaller.

Weaver Renting an apartment overlooking the inlet for a few days during a mini break, the couple enjoyed the convenience of inner city living. “We’d just get up and go on the balcony for coffee, and then meander down and go somewhere for breakfast and lunch, and I thought “I like this lifestyle, why aren’t we doing it?”,” says Lorraine. Tim and Lorraine sold up and eventually settled on an apartment at the then recently completed Wallamurra Towers in Abbott Street, where they have resided for the past five and a half years.

“We love it. It’s like being on permanent holiday even though we work,” says Lorraine. For the Weaver’s, while they enjoy the benefits of being in such close proximity to the esplanade, restaurants, and all the vibrancy that Cairns has to offer, the move to the city was more than just a lifestyle choice. The saving on fuel and wear and tear to their vehicle has been substantial, and according to Tim, living so close to essential services means that if they were unable to drive it wouldn’t be an impediment - an advantage when they start to look toward retirement. When it comes to retiring, while Tim and Lorraine have a wish list of sorts, they are yet to decide on a plan. “I would like to think that we would be staying in town, if not this, then something very similar. Whether or not it’s here or whether it’s on the Sunshine Coast I don’t know,” says Lorraine. Tim points out that the big argument for pending retirees when they move to a unit is the additional cost of body corporate fees. “If you own your unit, then you’ve only got body corporate fees and rates, but if you’re paying it off then you’ve got three lots of payments,” he says. Tim’s love of Penang and Malacca formed the idea that he refers to as his “mythical move” – to retire in Malaysia. The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) Programme launched by the Malaysian government offers non-Malaysians a ten year renewable visa. According to the MM2H website www.mm2h.com, the programme is primarily attracting

91

people who wish to retire in Malaysia, offering a lower cost of living, economic stability, good infrastructure, first class medical facilities, and direct flights to most Australian capital cities, along with the ability to bring your own vehicle into the country. “There is a tax implication if you’ve still got property and what have you here, you are still under the Australian Tax laws, but if you’ve sold everything up and went over there and had some money at your disposal you could live very well,” says Tim. While retirement is something that Tim and Lorraine have looked into, it is quite a few years down the track for the dynamic duo, who still enjoy the challenges of working and leading an active lifestyle. “We don’t think of ourselves as in our sixties or seventies. We don’t feel that. So I think because we’re active and we still work, we’re fairly young in our outlook and maybe that’s what keeps us young,” says Lorraine. While ensuring sensible food choices and regular exercise are part of their routine, the avid walkers acknowledge that aside from the occasional aches and pains that come with ageing, they are fortunate to be in good health, and this is paramount to their outlook on life. Keen to see more of the world while they are still able to, Tim and Lorraine understand that international travel is not for everyone. At this point in life, they believe it is about whittling down commitments to free yourself up and discover what you can do.

“It may not be the trip outside the country. It might be down to Tassie, or Melbourne or up to Ayers Rock. Or not at all. It’s about what’s important to you,” says Tim. And on the Weaver’s plans to discover more a little closer to home….. “I love Australia. We’ve done a fair bit, but we haven’t been all over,” says Tim. “Yes, that’s reserved for when we can’t get insurance to get out of the country,” laughs Lorraine.

Travelling into

Retirement

B Y SAN DY SI R I AN N I

One of the best things about retirement has to be the ability to get up and go wherever you like, whenever you like. Now that the “Babyboomers” have come of age it has been identified that travel is one of their top priorities, and why not? As a result there is a growing trend in the market as consumers look for something a little bit different, more exotic and nostalgic. Smart travel providers are realising the potential of this ever growing market and with so many different options to suit everyone, the only thing holding you back is to trying to decide where to go. Having sat down with a group of lovely retirees, I was able to determine four main reasons why travel in the later years was so rewarding and important. For many it was their chance to tick things off that “bucket list”, to explore and realise lifetime dreams. For others it was more nostalgic, to visit the family, rekindle old friendships and revisit old places. Sort of an homage to the past and a nod to the present. Then there are those that like to do family trips with the grandkids, making special memories while they can and for others, the chance to indulge in that special interest; gardening, a love of castles, War History, culinary pursuits. Small group trips seemed to be the preference either on an arranged tour, or a small group travelling independently together. One thing that was prevalent was the desire to have everything organised so there were no hidden surprises. Budget accommodation on the whole was out and comfortable, reputable hotels were in. I am not saying all travellers stay in five star hotels, but on the whole the feeling was that they had done the hard yards through their working lives, so why not relax and enjoy the fruits of their labour?

Boomers, Zoomers & Seniors

The feeling that they should get on and do those adventurous trips while they were mobile and fit enough to enjoy them was also a popular thought. Asia, Africa, Canada, South America, all those more active destinations were top of the list as were longer trips in excess of 4 weeks to see as much and do as much as they can. The Europe River Cruises could wait until they were a little older and less mobile as traditionally these are a little less active. There are no limits to where you can go, the only limits on travel are those we impose on ourselves. With this in mind there are so many options to cater for every style of traveller. Small group, intimate tours of no more than 10 or 12 that are perfect for singles looking to go away. While not all companies embrace the single traveller there are many who will happily pair up a single with a travelling mate, or waive the single supplements on some tours so the cost isn’t ridiculous. A very popular option for small groups is organising a bespoke tour to meet your specific requirements. This way you can tailor make your itinerary and your guide can amend it as you go along to suit your needs. Cruises are extremely popular as they offer an all-inclusive option, provide plenty of opportunities to meet others and have entertainment and activities all organised. Again there is the ability to choose your level of luxury, from family friendly 3 star cruise companies to the luxury of the mega liners and majestic sailing vessels. Or why not charter your own yacht with a group of friends. River cruising, ocean, expedition, large ship, small yacht. It’s all there to be realised.

We are lucky out of Cairns to have direct flights into Asia which will connect to pretty much everywhere. If you need to, or like a stop, there are now so many options for a few days layover to break your journey. Some people like to break a journey, others prefer to get to their destination as quickly as possible. Economy, Premium Economy, Business Class, First Class, the choices are all there depending on your budget, and itineraries can be tailor made to suit your requirements.

The perennial rail is perfect for travellers with lots of time and a penchant to rekindle those old, romantic days of train travel. The Venice-Simplon Orient Express, Rovos Rail, Belmond, Golden Eagle and the Ghan…all bring to mind visions of excess, fur, suit and tie extravagance and the finer things in life. While the Rocky Mountaineer, Glacier Express, Trans-Mongolian and Andean Explorer all cater to those a little more wild at heart.

what we are missing. Often it is those around us that alert us to what we are missing. They notice the television blaring loudly, that conversation has been mis-understood and even that certain sounds are not being heard at all.

What better gift to give yourself or a loved one for the New Year than better hearing

Research has shown that in order to lead a fulfilled life human beings value their relationships, their ability to communicate and their independence. Diminished hearing also diminishes this desired quality of life.

comments Joanna Magee director of the family practice AUDiOHEALTH. Better hearing reconnects people to those they love, wipes the frown off a face, removes confusion from mis-understood conversation and reduces frustration which occurs from the effort of straining to hear. In fact it will reduce stress, reduce tiredness and increase the quality of life. Recent research indicates that reversal of cognitive decline is possible when the brain’s neural pathways are strengthened using amplification. The old adage of use it or lose it certainly applies here.

One of the main obstacles to taking action has been identified as vanity, and yet a person struggling to hear has more impact on their self-esteem and on how they are perceived by others than a person who obtains assistance and is fully engaged in life. It is true to say that ‘A hearing loss is more conspicuous than a hearing aid!’ This is particularly true with the new styles being so tiny and deeply seated into the ear canal that no one can see them at all. Being an independent clinic gives our clients more choice and we work closely with each person to find the best solution for them. For those seeking discretion, the new invisible-when-worn hearing device sits right down next to the eardrum and is totally out of sight, yet, it is packed full of features thanks to the latest miniature computer chip delivering rich, natural sound quality and clarity in background noise.

I’ve been involved with hearing healthcare for over 30 years and with three generations of family involvement our family are blessed to have a vocation that puts smiles on faces, repairs relationships and empowers people to take more control of their lives. I have experienced the dynamics change in a relationship when the hearing impaired person can now function well and regains control of their position in the family.

So there is no need to develop those frown lines further by wrinkling the brow when straining to hear, and there is no need to appear old and out of it when it is easier than ever to obtain assistance and join in with friends, family and colleagues. Share in the fun, hear the punch line in the joke, don’t miss another piece of important information and give everyone else a rest by having the television and radio played at a comfortable level.

Helen Keller once famously said “that not being able to see isolated her from objects but not being able to hear isolated her from people!”

So this year if your resolution is to improve your quality of life then better hearing is only a phone call away. There is a free trial offer on the new award winning hearing devices so come and hear the difference for yourself. To take advantage of this offer Call AUDiOHEALTH on 4041 7860 or call into the clinic at 125 Grafton Street (opposite the cinemas) or a visiting clinic at Atherton, Yungaburra, Innisfail or Mission Beach. Our friendly staff can help you with advice or you can book a free initial consultation.

When we don’t hear well we lose some of our ability to communicate effectively and as we grow older our hearing gradually diminishes and this can occur so slowly and assiduously that we are unaware of how far from normal it has declined. As we don’t hear some sounds there is nothing to remind us of

Retirement Villages & Lifestyle Resorts Retirement Villages

Lifestyle Resorts

Weighing up the differences! It could be argued that Queensland is the most popular state to retire to; it’s not surprising therefore that Queensland boasts the larges number of retirement communities in Australia. The majority of these are situated in the South East, however most towns and cities, including Far North Queensland, boast one or two entities of their own. Unfortunately, in most people’s minds, these Retirement-based developments are all generally lumped together in one basket; in reality nothing could be further from the truth! Let’s start with the legal difference; Retirement Villages operate under State-specific Retirement Villages Acts, while Lifestyle Resorts are governed by the Manufactured Homes Act relevant to the particular State in which they are built. To explain - when you buy a home or a detached or semi-detached unit in a Retirement Village you are buying the 99 year leasehold of it, therefore it will never belong to you despite sometimes paying dearly for the benefit. Upon your demise the home reverts back to the park owner and is resold. A Lifestyle Resort in a Manufactured Homes Park is a very different kettle of fish - you actually buy the home and, in Queensland, sign a perpetual lease for the land that the home is built on. You are entitled to sell the home at any time and ownership of it can be bequeathed upon your demise. While you can expect to pay some type of Weekly Fee in both entities there are a large number of financial differences which need to be considered before deciding which type of development to choose.

In a Retirement Village you will pay what is commonly known as an Ingoing-contribution which, in general terms, is the price that you pay for your home or unit. If you decide that you no longer want to live in the village or upon your demise you (or your estate) will be liable to pay an Exit Fee, sometimes also referred to as a Deferred Management Fee. This varies from Village to Village but essentially is calculated as a percentage charged per year of occupation capped on a number of years. Therefore if the village charges 6% on 6 years, you will be expected to pay 36% of the sales price received for the home. Furthermore, in some villages, you will also be charged full or partial Capital Gains Retention (if your Ingoing was $300,000 and the unit sells for $350,000 the $50,000 difference will be owed to the village owner) and in many cases you will also be required to upgrade the kitchen at your cost prior to sale. It is important to note that you don’t have to be retired to live in a Lifestyle Resort, provided that you are over the age of fifty. You will generally purchase or pay for the construction of your home or unit and, once you move in, will pay a Weekly Site Fee

101

which generally includes all ongoing charges other than electricity, excess water, insurance and telephone/internet. This fee is adjusted by C.P.I. each year and there is usuallly also a Market review done every 2, 3 or 5 years. • Benefits of choosing a Lifestyle Resort include: • Homes are owned outright and can be bequeathed; you or whichever agent you or your estate employs, can sell the home at any time and you keep any capital gain made on the transaction without the added burden of any Deferred Management/Exit Fees. • The principal home does not form part of the Centrelink asset test which results in higher levels of pension and a resultantly greater rental benefit payment. • Operating as a Leasehold resort has its own benefits - not only is the purchase of the home exempt from Stamp Duty or Conveyance charges, Centrelink will regard the owner as a ‘renter’ and those on a pension may also be eligible to receive rental assistance. • Guests (including grandchil-

CairnsLife

dren) are free to stay and pets are permitted; this is governed by pertinent conditions in the Living in Harmony document that protects all residents and maintains a harmonious environment. The Manufactured Homes Act itself and its enforcing body, the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal, gives owners the protection of strict conditions governing the Lifestyle Resorts and the Weekly fees charged by each respective development.

Without a doubt one of the most important and valuable assets in anyone’s life is their home; we all strive to possess one, spend our whole lives paying for it and, just when we should be able to enjoy the full benefits of our labours, battle through our twilight years trying to maintain it! Downsizing into a smaller, more manageable home with no garden maintenance and resort-style facilities is therefore incredibly attractive to most people approaching retirement, however this can be fraught with hidden pit-falls and it’s therefore imperative that you do your homework before making what is undoubtedly one of the most crucial decision of your life!

Margaret Culloty Margaret Culloty moved into her perfect little villa at Mercy Health Coral Sea Gardens Village after her neighbourhood of 41 years became less friendly. “I just got sick of it and decided it was time to move,” the 67-year-old said. Fortunately, Margaret knew exactly where she wanted to live. She used to work at Mercy Place Woree, formerly known as Mary Potter Nursing Home, and first saw the villas when her job was transferred to Mercy Place Westcourt.

“I looked at the villas and thought: I’d love to live in one of them,” Margaret recalled. “They were just perfect.” Margaret, who now volunteers for the pastoral care team at Mercy Place Woree, said the move had brought her peace of mind. “It certainly has,” Margaret said. “I’ve had the best sleep in 12 months since I’ve been here.”

I love living here: I love the views and I love the privacy, it just suits me.”

Kathleen moved into the Mercy Health Bareki Apartments after her husband died and she was facing the prospect of a heart operation. “My wonderful family wanted to take care of me but I like my independence, and here I am secure knowing my in-home emergency call system is there if ever I need it,” Kathleen said. “I’m enjoying Cairns and the village lifestyle at Bareki Apartments.”

The couple moved into the Mercy Health Bareki Apartments in 2012 after Kate broke her hip and Ned fell over at the hospital. “We then realised if we were both in the doldrums, we’d have no one to look after us,” Ned said. BO OM

ZO O M

ZO O M

Zoomers No, I’m not talking about the latest snappy little sports car, but Baby Boomers and the subculture just below that demographic, Zoomers

While Boomers are the largest demographic that continues to influence the economy, determined to suck the marrow out of life and certainly not moving over willingly until they are dragged kicking and screaming into retirement, Zoomers appear to be a relatively new sub-culture emerging behind the Boomers and probably because they are the children of Boomers. Why Zoomers? Because they enjoy life with ZIP! Zoomers are trend-setting Boomers or on the cusp of Boomers at just below 50, who are breaking new ground, redefining aging and reinventing retirement. Speaking of retirement, the trend now seems to be a growing number of people are not retiring at age 65. Experts feel this trend will continue and the idea that 65 is a magic number signifying the end of incomeearning years will be permanently wiped out of our future, particularly as health care improves and general attitudes to taking care of ourselves also improve. So what implications are there for either of these demographics in the event of relationship breakdown? Boomers are more at risk of financial disaster in relationship breakdown, either once retired or working towards it. A lifetime of savings and hard work all carefully planned can be reduced by half after a long marriage and child raising, leaving a very different future ahead. A comfortable retirement for two may not be achievable to the same

standard on separation, not to mention the emotional upheaval and ripple effect through the family when a long marriage breaks down. Relationships not only with children but also with grandchildren can feel the pain. Mediation is a far better option for resolution of issues than litigation at any age, but even more important for the Boomer. Generally speaking after a very long marriage, significant contributions aside, the Boomer is looking at an equal division of assets. Yes sir, that superannuation you cuddled and fed over the years in your name alone? It’s on the table as an asset for division, whether it is in the transition to retirement phase, fully vested or still getting topped up as much as the rules will allow. Superannuation is treated in a property division as property and can be split between the parties to even up asset division, making it fairer for a spouse who has not worked for many years outside the home and has been unable to contribute to superannuation. There are some funds that require expert valuations before their value can be determined; particularly if there has been significant military service . Where such a fund may be converted to a pension due to injury, that income stream can be considered and valued. It’s complicated stuff, hence the need for an expert valuation. It is even more difficult if the funds are in a self-managed superannuation fund. Again expert advice is needed.

But what of the Zoomers? Those youthful beings with no intention of retiring in 20 years let alone right now? Although they may have a longer income earning period to recover financially from the property aspects of a relationship breakdown, there are the same issues likely to be raised, the same need to resolve disputes as a Boomer in a civilized fashion but often with the addition of a continued role as a parent. Did you hear me say civilized again? This is where getting sound advice and utilising alternate dispute resolution once more comes into play. More than ever, Booming or Zooming, it’s important for parties to keep it classy, keep it civilized and endeavour to keep away from the cost and uncertainty of litigation. That superannuation fund will be around a bit longer, but the relationship between people who are still parenting can be fragile and easily damaged if not approached in the right way. Boom or Zoom, breaking up is never easy to do and family lawyers know that its true. Always seek expert and specialised advice before making any decision.

Parent Migration All applicants for parent visas must meet the balance of family (BoF) test. This means that parents must have either: at least half of their children permanently resident in Australia or more children permanently resident in Australia than in any other single country overseas. There are two visa categories for parents wishing to migrate to Australia: the parent category and the contributory parent category. The differences between the two categories are that there are more visa places available each migration program year in the contributory parent visa. The contributory parent visa classes are given much higher priority and therefore processed faster however these classes are subject to a substantially higher second visa application charge and higher assurance of support bond with a longer bond period. A mandatory Assurance of Support (AoS) bond is payable for all parent classes. The AoS is a legal commitment by a person to repay to the Australian Government certain welfare payments paid to migrants during their respective AoS period. An AoS is also a commitment to provide financial support to the person applying to migrate, so that they

If you are an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, who is settled in Australia, and has a parent living overseas wishing to migrate here then the parent visa categories are available.

will not have to rely on social welfare payments. The AoS period is 2 years for the parent visa classes and 10 years for the contributory parent visa classes. Parents whose age is equivalent to a person who is eligible for an Australian age pension, in most cases, are able to make an application for an aged parent or aged contributory parent class while here in Australia and remain in Australia during the visa processing. Otherwise applicants need to apply for the offshore categories. The contributory parent visa is split into temporary and permanent visas. A parent can either apply directly for permanent residency or they can chose to apply for a temporary visa, and then within two years apply for the corresponding permanent visa. The advantage of doing this is that the substantial second visa application charge is spread across two visa applications and potentially a two year period. If you are intending to migrate to Australia you should the assistance of a Registered Migration Agent who can give advice and guidance on the right visa option for you.

Ridiculously Relevant

Marketing

Get set to kick start your business in 2016 by learning how to make your marketing efforts ridiculously relevant with advice from local yet global business guru, Andrew Griffiths, at the Cairns Chamber of Commerce’s business luncheon to be held on 23 February 2016. Marketing used to be simple, we just didn’t realise it at the time. Today both the message and the mechanism need to be ridiculously relevant. Get these aspects wrong and your valuable niche market will find another business that actually is getting it right. This is equally applicable to small businesses and giant corporations alike and sadly, many of both are getting it very wrong every day. The world has changed, and it will continue to change. Getting your message heard and taken seriously has always been the key to marketing success, but how we go about this needs to reflect where we are heading not where we have been.

Welcome to world of Marketing 2020. Andrew Griffiths is certainly well known in Cairns. In the last 15 years he has built a global reputation as an author, with 12 books sold in over 60 countries. Fitness after Fifty with Scott Payne

The best time to start is now!!

Whether it’s making the most of your twilight years or lifting up your grandkids without hesitation, exercise at any age is an essential part of our life. Although our goals maybe different as we age, exercise is used to enjoy our favourite sports or to simply maintain mobility and health. But where do you start? Exercise doesn’t mean you have to be up at 5am down the esplanade for boot camp. Exercise could simply mean engaging in activities that you enjoy and having a trusted Health Professional to support and guide you. The National exercise guidelines suggest we exercise for at least 150 – 300 minutes of moderate cardiovascular activity per week for strong heart and lungs. In addition, 2 sessions of resistance training per week will assist in improving your bones and muscles.

Sitting is now considered the new smoking. Exercising for one hour a day is not enough to ward off the effects of inactivity. However, variety is the spice of life. Getting in the garden, having an active hobby or volunteering in the local community are some of the key factors to having a healthy lifestyle. Like a doctor would prescribe medications, Accredited Exercise Physiologists consider your health history and activity levels to design an exercise plan to suit your individual needs. With any condition great or small, exercise is a positive source of intervention. The best time to start is now!! For more information contact Senior Accredited Exercise Physiologist Scott Payne from Complete Health and Fitness Solutions on 0400 008 602 – creating independence for quality of life.

Activities like swimming, brisk walking and cycling will aid you in reaching your cardiovascular goal. Resistance exercises like body weight training or utilising household items will help you maintain your strength and mobility.

Residential

Land with Rick Carr

The Cairns residential land market is recovering from a period of uncharacteristically slow demand for new residential allotments following the Global Financial Crisis (GFC).

In overall activity terms, there were 677 new residential land allotments sold during 2014-15, more than double the rate of 274 lots sold during 2010-11. However current sales levels are still well below the average underlying demand for land in Cairns estimated to be in the vicinity of 950 new residential lots per annum. In addition, it appears that the rate of growth has tapered over the last twelve months, in part due to buyer resistance to increased asking prices. Meanwhile buyers have plenty of choice. There is a current supply of 736 lots available for purchase in the Cairns market, located across 51 different land estates in active stages of development. We are also starting to see lots being introduced to the market off the plan, a phenomenon not seen for some time. New lot construction, which had been especially quiet following the GFC, has now ramped up again as market conditions have improved. However new lot construction is also being constrained by a lack of development finance, higher infrastructure charges and a lower number of active residential land developers. These conditions are destined to feed through into higher development costs, and hence higher land prices, in future land developments. Land prices currently start at about $130,000 per allotment and extend mostly through to about $280,000. The current median allotment price is $219,000. The median allotment price has progressively risen by 33% since 2012, though this represents movement from a low base due to there being a significant volume of receiver stock being sold on the market at low prices during 2012.

109

Median land prices in individual areas stand at approximately $145,000 per allotment in the Southern Corridor, $235,000 on the Northern Beaches, and $250,000 in Central and Western Cairns. Land prices have escalated the most significantly over the last three years in the Central, Western and Northern areas of Cairns, where the land supply is more limited. Land prices in these locations, and the Northern Beaches in particular, have also been influenced by speculation over the prospective Aquis development. The Southern Corridor land market has seen less severe price rises over the last three years due to its larger developable land supply and greater competition between developers. The outlook based on current trends is for continued increases in both sale volumes and prices as the market benefits from our slowly improving economy.

Rick Carr has been the Research Director at independent property advisors Herron Todd White in Cairns since 1998. He is also well known as the author of the CairnsWatch monthly economic and market indicator publication, and as an independent expert commentator on the Cairns property market.

SOCIAL NORMS I would argue there’s no such thing as normal. Without watering down my argument, I’d like to paraphrase a fictional character who has historically been depicted as rather, abnormal. I refer to none other than Da da da dum, click, click, Morticia Addams. While she might be creepy and somewhat kooky, she does make a valid point about normality. She said “Normality is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly.” However in spite of Ms Addams’ truth bomb, society has insisted on the creation and upholding of social norms from time immemorial. I suppose that our herd mentality is, at least partially, to blame. We’re social creatures who so desperately want to fit in, thus we create idealised models of appropriate beliefs, behaviours and values to abide by. To be fair, I’m a big supporter of some behavioural rules, such as the wearing of clothes (I’m yet to appreciate why some men succumb to the overwhelming need to expose their wedding tackle to the world after a few beers?!) but I strenuously believe that some other rules are downright nonsensical. A moot point occurred as I was perusing the fine arts, craft and produce at the Palm Cove Markets recently. As I was sauntering down Williams Esplanade, I noticed a street artist, or more accurately,

a living statue smeared in brown paint, complete with a hazel tulle skirt and a floral crown. Presumably she was depicting a woodland nymph or so I thought. I was tempted to ask her but as she was pretending to be a statue that option seemed intrusive. One thing’s for sure however, she attracted a healthy crowd. As I scanned the spectators enchanted faces, they all had one thing in common; an expression of awe. In the past, I too would have shared their awe-struck state, but now I was intrigued as to why we are compelled to watch, let alone be entertained by a living human being pretending to be a lifeless, stone cold statue? Isn’t this just an artsy way of watching grass grow? Or perhaps, the fun part is waiting for the living statue to somehow fall out of character via a sudden twitch or sneeze? In any event, we’re waiting to see if the human will behave as a human. LOL. Nonetheless, when you break it down, watching a breathing mortal strive to be as lifeless as petrified wood is a curious experience albeit, the masses consider it commonplace. Another example is more universal, spanning far beyond the precincts of the Northern beaches. I always find it curious and a little bit sad, that it is perfectly acceptable, and often preferable, to answer the question “How are

you?” with “Good thanks” even when we may be far from OK. Far too often honesty is sacrificed in the interests of saving face and smoother social interactions. Then there is the bikini vs. lingerie quandary. The wearing of a bikini in public is entirely acceptable but once it’s replaced by a brassiere and panties, it suddenly becomes taboo. This may sound irrational but I would much rather tell my parents that I modelled in a swimsuit shoot rather than one of the lingerie variety. However, with any luck I’ll be spared the agony of this sort of soul searching dilemma. Finally a loyal HotFM listener recently phoned in regarding a social norm enshrined in our legal system that he eloquently described as “historical anachronism.” He apparently did not understand, nor did he WISH to understand why a judge, dressed in a black gown and wig, had the audacity (his words) to lecture him on proper and suitable attire. In an attempt to lighten the mood, I suggested that the colour black is eternally stylish! He immediately fired back “Yes, if you’re in mourning Morticia!”
