PUBLISHER’S NOTE

It’s October and it’s hard to believe we are already thinking about Christmas festivities, but here we are!

Business owners and managers are exhausted, skilled staff shortages are weighing heavy on them, and the mental health burden on society is certainly front and centre as post COVID data begins to flow in and the rate of mentally unwell people in Australia and right here in FNQ becomes more prevalent. While October might be Halloween and Christmas preparations for so many of us, it is also a very important time of year, it’s Mental Health Awareness month.

So while I could be hyping you up about what’s inside this fabulous spring edition, I’d much rather dedicate this space to talk about a topic very close to my heart – mental health.

Here’s the thing, mental health is something we all have, it’s not a dirty word, some of us are just more mentally healthy or mentally fit than others at different stages of our lives. Your mental state can shift quite quickly just with a few unexpected events in your life occurring, or it can shift gradually without you even realising.

If you’re noticing someone in your life who is not their usual self, check in. It’s easy for us all to get caught up in our own world’s and just brush certain behaviours off in others, or even get offended by it sometimes and take it personally (i.e people cancelling on you, not returning your calls or text messages etc). Often people don’t even know they’re becoming mentally unwell, they just feel off and don’t want to socialise, or connect, so they push everyone and everything away as they are unable to cope with any more than just putting one foot in front of the other some days. But it’s up to us as friends, colleagues and family to do our very best to take

notice of changes in body language and behaviour in those closest to us, and to genuinely check in without judgement.

If you are going to check in with someone, you’ve also got to be prepared to assist, or refer people onto the many wrap around services in our community. People don’t always have to be looking sad, or depressed to be mentally unwell. They could be the absolute opposite - over the top happy, constantly on the treadmill of busy-ness and to the average Joe they look like they have it all together and under control. But to those who know them, if it’s a little bit more than usual, then stop and ask yourself if there’s more to the story. And don’t do what’s easy for you and brush it aside, lean in and make some caring enquiries.

Holding space for people and meeting them where they’re at and being willing to put our own lives on hold for a moment and sit with someone, talk with them, and genuinely listen and try and understand, is the most powerful thing you can do for someone. What’s the old saying … “a problem shared is a problem halved.” Sometimes people just need to sit with others they know and trust to unload and get things off their chest. It’s up to us to take the time to allow people to do that. So if I was to ask you to do anything this October, it’s to give your time to people with no strings attached. Time – it’s the greatest gift we can give anyone in this life. Give it to people you care about. It’ll be therapy in itself, for them and you㴀 … bringing some colour into what was once a wintery grey season, and shine some light into both your hearts as you enter this magical season of spring.

Far North Home to Successful Farmers

Managing Director

: 0417 779 917

: lara@agrifoodcatalyst.com.au

Far North Queensland is home to some of the best farmers in the world. They invest millions every year to reduce farm waste, choose environmentally responsible processing and packaging options, value add to underutilised crops, improve soil quality, decrease water consumption, embrace the latest and most innovative ag technology, and care for their staff.

If you spend time talking to a farmer, they will tell you about their passion for taking care of their farm and the land it is on.

With such a high calibre of farmers in our region how do we recognise the best of the best, the cream of the crop? Who is not just growing quality crops but also is farming sustainably, being innovative and leading their industry and their community?

For more than a deca`de, that benchmark has been set with the annual Charlie Nastasi Farmer of the Year Award.

Charlie Nastasi was a stalwart of the Far North Queensland farming community throughout his life. Charlie and his wife Lucy grew tobacco and then pumpkins, sweet potato and other vegetables on their farm in Biboohra which was first established by his father Salvatore Nastasi in the 1940s.

In 1975 Charlie planted 3600 mango trees. As his neighbours moved onto greener pastures, Charlie bought their farms and planted more, creating a flourishing 73-hectare farm of 17,500 Kensington Pride, Kensington Red, Keitt and the family’s own Pearl mango trees.

In 1999, Charlie saw an opportunity to value add to their mangoes, creating new income streams and protecting the farm business against fluctuating fruit

prices. The Golden Drop Winery not only became the first commercial winery in North Queensland, but also a flourishing agri tourism venture.

Today, Charlie’s sons Sam and Dino continue their father’s legacy not only running the farm but also leading the industry by participating in a number of programs to care for the Great Barrier Reef including achieving Hort360 Reef Certification. Grassy interrows, earthworks to prevent erosion and loss of topsoil, scouting to improve efficacy of chemical use, and retaining riparian vegetation are some of the ways the Nastasi family looks after their farm, and in turn waterways leading to the reef.

On September 13, 290 members of the Far North Queensland farming community came together in Mareeba at the FNQ Growers Gala Dinner, to learn who would be honoured as the 2024 Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year. FNQ Growers President, Mr Joe Moro, was impressed by the quality of finalists. “Our growers are leading the world with their innovation and industry leadership, and we should be very proud of them,” he said.

The 2023 Charlie Nastasi Farmer of the Year was Lorraine Stopford from Rocky Creek Orchards on the Atherton Tablelands. Lorraine was the first woman to win the title and was honoured to showcase the role that women play on farm. “Until 1994, Australian women were not allowed to list their legal occupation as ‘farmer’, so to be awarded the Charlie Nastasi Farmer of the Year Award is a huge deal,” she said.

Nominations for the 2024 Award were received from throughout the Far North Queensland region. Four finalists were selected from the nominations

to be assessed by the judges for their innovation, industry leadership and community contribution. Finalists included Joe Zappala growing papaya and sugar cane, Deb Nucifora growing mangoes, Claude Santucci growing lemons and sugar cane, and Bradley Moulton growing lemon myrtle.

After a presentation on the farm business of each finalist, Lucy Nastasi joined Mr Moro on stage to present the 2024 Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year award to Deb Nucifora. Deb is active in the community as well as in her mango business with 17,000 trees in the orchard. A hard working volunteer and business manager, Deb attends every Australian Mango Industry Association conference and is always looking for opportunities to develop the Deb’s Gold Mangoes brand. Outside of her farming business, Deb is also heavily involved in the community as a volunteer with the Paddy’s Green Rural Fire Brigade and the President of Mareeba Flexi Choice, providing services to people with a disability.

Deb was joined by her husband John, children and grandchildren as she celebrated the win and joined in the bidding for the charity auction. Donations of fruit and vegetables were auctioned off to the highest bidder, raising almost $23,000 for charities including the Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation, Down Syndrome Queensland and the Black Cockatoo Foundation to support mental health.

Winning bids came from many industry stakeholders, some of whom had travelled from as far away as Western Australia to join the celebrations. Nominations for the 2025 Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year will open in July.

Almost $2m Raised Towards Surgical Robot

ALMOST $2 million has been raised in the Donate for Dani campaign, a vital fundraiser to secure a cutting-edge surgical robot for Far North Queensland.

From large corporate donations to community-driven efforts, the unwavering generosity of individuals, businesses, and organisations across the region has transformed a vision into tangible progress. With $2 million raised, the campaign by the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation is now well on its way to securing the $4.3 million needed to purchase and commission the state-of-the-art surgical robot, affectionately named “DaNi.”

DaNi will provide surgeons at Cairns Hospital with unparalleled precision and capabilities, allowing for minimally invasive procedures, quicker recovery times, and significantly improved patient outcomes. This technology will ensure that patients in Far North Queensland no longer need to travel vast distances to access world-class surgical care.

“This monumental fundraising effort reflects the incredible heart and resilience of our community,” Foundation CEO Gina Hogan said.

“Every dollar donated is a testament to the belief that world-class healthcare should be accessible to everyone, right here in Far North Queensland.

“While this is an ambitious target, we already have $869,128.91 in the bank for this cause, which was fundraised by Rod and Sue Sherrington over four years

at their Trinity Advisory Christmas lunches,” she said. Mr Sherrington was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of 46 after being told it was highly unlikely, he did have it.

“I was lucky that my specialist, Dr Stefan Antoniou said it warranted further investigation. My dream is that no one, regardless of their financial situation, should have to travel outside Cairns for the treatment I had,” Mr Sherrington said.

“We are immensely grateful for the support of individuals, local businesses, and major donors who have all come together to help us reach this milestone. But we’re not done yet. We need everyone’s continued support to push us over the line,” Mrs Hogan said.

The Foundation has called on the public to maintain this momentum and help achieve the remaining target. There are still multiple ways to contribute, whether through direct donations, corporate partnerships, or community fundraising initiatives.

For more information or to donate to the Donate for Dani campaign, visit www.fnqhf.org.au or contact the Foundation directly.

SkyHaven Set To Transform Cairns Airport

Apurpose-built accommodation precinct is taking shape at Cairns Airport.

“SkyHaven” - the expansive new development, positioned on a central 20,000m2 site, is aimed at addressing the region’s critical shortage of quality, short-term accommodation.

Leading Cairns-based property developer MiHaven, through its subsidiary Tropical Airport Accommodation Pty Ltd (TAA), has secured a long-term lease from Cairns Airport to develop the precinct, which will cater to a range of industry and community requirements, including much-needed accommodation for skilled workers.

The first stage will include construction of 183 self-contained units, as well as guest amenities such as meeting and conference spaces, a café and two swimming pools and outdoor entertainment areas.

Cairns Airport Chief Executive Officer Richard Barker said the project would enable various local industries to grow their operations, and strengthen the capabilities of key community providers, such as health services.

“We have heard from various organisations and sectors that there is a desperate need for more short-term worker accommodation in our region. This precinct has been strategically planned to assist businesses across Tropical North Queensland, including those based at Cairns Airport,” he said.

“A number of airport-based organisations need to fly in workers for vital aviation maintenance works and other services, but they are constrained by a lack of accommodation options. Providing short term accommodation at Cairns Airport will enable operators to house skilled workers for several nights, up to a number of months.

L-R: Sarah and James Mort – MiHaven Founders

“We believe this development will assist greatly in alleviating the staffing pressures affecting many local organisations. MiHaven have an extensive and proven track record in this sector and we are thrilled to have them take the initiative to create and deliver this project.”

Work is set to commence on the site by the end of this year with construction of the first tranche of accommodation due for completion within two years. It is the final piece of the Cairns Airport business park precinct, which commenced 20 years ago and provides a base for a range of commercial operators and government agencies.

MiHaven’s Co-founder James Mort said, “Sarah and I are delighted to have this opportunity to create a truly Cairns-based project with all consultants and contractors being deployed locally from Cairns. This is Cairns through and through, directly investing more than $60 million into our economy.”

Key local organisations have already expressed overwhelming interest in the development, Mr Mort said.

“This is not a ‘build it and they will come’ project. If anything, we will probably say, why did we not build more at the time, given the

overwhelming response we have received to date, even before we could make this project public,” he said.

Cairns Airport has been commercially operating for over 40 years including an international terminal, with annual passenger numbers of over 4.2 million and a significant General Aviation maintenance operation, but until now, there has been no short-term accommodation provided at the airport. This facility will effectively address the accommodation needs of aviation staff, airlines, travellers, and government departments with large, mobile workforces. It will provide safe, secure, and selfcontained lodging in a central location.

MiHaven is a leading B Corp registered social enterprise based in Cairns, which includes MiHaven Training’s RTO operations. This project will enable MiHaven to continue to deliver training and employment outcomes, with a particular focus on opportunities for First Nations people. James Mort is committed to creating an Indigenous training and employment program including an onsite construction training program, providing 5 new Indigenous apprenticeship opportunities, including a purpose-built onsite training facility for the delivery of the theory study.

“SKYHAVEN”THE EXPANSIVE NEW DEVELOPMENT, POSITIONED ON A CENTRAL 20,000M2 SITE, IS AIMED

AT ADDRESSING THE REGION’S CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF QUALITY, SHORT-TERM ACCOMMODATION.

MiHaven proposes to develop the project in three stages, with Stage 1 + 2 comprising 183 self-contained studios, 1- and 2-bedroom apartments developed immediately, and Stage 3 is currently earmarked to be 200 + beds purpose-built student accommodation servicing the needs of CQU’s Airport based pilot training school and Aviation Australia’s Aviation Engineering School, also based at Cairns Airport, to later follow.

Key trends driving short term accommodation investment in Cairns include:

• Significant upgrades to infrastructure: $270 million upgrade to Cairns Convention Centre

• $55 million Cairns International Airport

Terminal improvements

• $360 million expansion of the Marine precinct

• $250 million Cairns Hospital Precinct expansion

Supply constraints:

• A limited supply of new hotels which is driving demand for existing assets

• No new major hotel/short term accommodation developments in the pipeline

Sustainability and Refurbishments:

• Investors are focusing on sustainable practices and refurbishments to meet modern traveller expectations.

• Most hotels near the airport (aside from Crystalbrook Collection) are of an asset age of at least 25 – 35 years (requiring significant refurbishment)

Market Recovery:

• The post-COVID recovery is leading to increased occupancy rates and higher investor interest.

MiHaven has been directly engaging with all key stakeholders since the inception of this project and has received widespread industry support with expressions of interest indicating strong demand for the 183 Serviced Apartments. Several aviation airport-based companies have committed to long-term accommodation agreements (i.e. over 12 months) to secure units to accommodate aircraft engineers, pilots and other travelling contractors.

James Mort said “This is not a build it and they will come project. If anything, we will probably say why did we not build more at the time, given the overwhelming response we have received to date, before we could even make this project public.”

The project is shovel ready with construction aimed to commence in late 2024 and is expected to be completed by late 2026/early 2027.

Managing Spring-time Hay Fever

: wholelife.com.au

Co-Founder and Pharmacist

Watery eyes, runny or blocked nose, asthma, sneezing, itchy throat—are these symptoms that sound familiar to you around this time of year?

For many, spring is the best time of the year; flowers are in bloom, the air is comfortably warm and the days are growing longer.

But for many, spring is a time synonymous with allergic rhinitis—better known as hay fever.

At best, hay fever is inconvenient and irritating. At worst, it can manifest as dangerous, debilitating allergic reactions. Either way, it’s important that if you suffer from it, you’re managing it as best you can to ensure your own safety and quality of life.

So, why are allergies worse in spring?

Pollen is the primary culprit associated with spring-time allergies. With trees and flowers in bloom, the pollen count in the air increases considerably.

Pollen is a powdery substance produced by plants when they reproduce. It is picked up and carried by the wind to other plants to fertilise them. The pollen that is most often responsible for causing allergies comes from trees, weeds and grasses, but it can also be found in mould. When it circulates through the air in higher quantities during spring, it makes its way into our bodies and in some people, can trigger allergic rhinitis or asthma by irritating the nasal passages, eyes, and lungs.

How do I know if I’m experiencing hay fever?

Chances are … if you know, you know.

Plenty of people experience hay fever and unfortunately, even if you’ve never experienced it before, you can develop it at any point.

Symptoms of hay fever can include:

• A runny, itchy, or blocked nose

• Sneezing

• Itchy, watery, red eyes

• Itchy ears, throat, or roof of mouth

• Coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath (particularly in people who suffer from asthma)

• Itchy skin or rash

What can I do to manage hay fever?

1. Avoid your triggers

If you experience hay fever in spring, it’s likely you’re reacting to the pollen content in the air and while there’s no way to avoid this completely, there are a few things you can do to minimise your exposure to it.

• Leave your shoes at the door

• Regularly wash your clothes

• Keep your space clean. Vacuum your floors regularly and consider using an air purifier

• Wash your pets—pollen and dust can accumulate in their fur!

• Shower when you get home; wash the day, and the pollen, off!

• Keep your windows closed

• Regularly check your local weather forecast for pollen counts and forecasts, so you can plan accordingly

2. Consider medication

Plenty of people require medication to help them through spring and there are a range of options to consider.

WholeLife pharmacists and other health professionals are always happy to discuss medication options with you, to ensure you’re getting the most appropriate support for your allergies, and to be certain you’re using your chosen medication safely and effectively.

Antihistamines like Zyrtec and Claratyne block your body’s response to histamine—a chemical released by your immune system as an allergic response. Some antihistamines may cause drowsiness, so make sure you read labels carefully and discuss options with your pharmacist or health professional.

If your primary symptom is nasal congestion, antihistamines are not always effective. Nasal sprays can be helpful in this regard, relieving congestion, postnasal drip, and sinus pressure. They’re available from a range of brands, including Rhinocort and Nasonex. You could also consider a saline spray or nasal wash, such as the FESS nasal spray or FLO Sinus Care Kit, to flush out, and relieve pressure in, your sinuses.

It’s important to remember that nasal sprays work most effectively when used preventatively and consistently. If you know you suffer from allergies in spring, start using a nasal spray 1-2 weeks prior to the start of the season. This will help to stave off inflammation and will prevent some of your worst symptoms before they begin. Once you’ve started, don’t stop! Consistency is key—make sure you’re using your nasal spray daily throughout the season.

3. I tend to get seasonal asthma. What can I do about that? Asthma is another common reaction to increased pollen levels in the air during spring. If you’re predisposed to asthma, you could notice that it worsens and even if you don’t suffer from asthma chronically, you could develop symptoms around this time of year.

Symptoms to look out for include:

• shortness of breath

• coughing

• wheezing upon exhalation

• chest tightness or pain

If you notice these symptoms, we advise seeking medical advice from a healthcare professional. There are a range of prescription and over-thecounter medications that will help alleviate your asthma symptoms and prevent flare-ups.

Spring is undoubtedly a beautiful, albeit challenging, time of year that everyone deserves to enjoy! Thankfully, there are a range of treatment options available to help you manage your hay fever. Pop into your local WholeLife store if you suffer from allergies—our pharmacists would be happy to help tailor a medication plan to your specific needs.

Chief Executive Officer

Cairns Chamber of Commerce

The Cairns Chamber of Commerce is committed to supporting our local Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) by informing, connecting, and most importantly, listening to the needs of our business community.

Right now, a key challenge is finding both skilled and unskilled workers. With unemployment at an all-time low of 2.8%, we’re all fishing in a pretty small talent pool. Issues like housing and wage parity continue to complicate the situation.

The Federal Government is currently reviewing Australia’s migration policy. To ensure our local businesses are heard, we collaborated with the Department of Home Affairs to host a forum where industry sectors such as Agriculture, Hospitality, and Aged Care, to name but a few, shared their thoughts on how this policy can better address regional workforce gaps. This was also an excellent platform for our business community to table the need for the Federal Government to address the complexities and costs involved when utilising the migration system to attract an overseas worker. Working closely with Cairns Regional Council, we will continue to advocate for the remaining funding required from the Federal Government to complete the Cairns Water Security project. Crime prevention and the protection of local businesses continue to be top priorities, ensuring Cairns stays a safe and vibrant place to live and work.

We were fortunate to attend the Tourism Events Queensland blueprint to the 2032

Olympics in Brisbane recently, where we gathered information around procurement opportunities for Cairns businesses to tap into, leading up to and after the 2032 Olympics.

Through the Growing Workforce Participation fund (funded by the Queensland Government), we have conducted numerous workshops and seminars focused on diversifying our workforce. Our recent session on Intercultural Engagement in the Workplace was a hit, offering deep insights into how we can better connect with colleagues enabling businesses to build a strong, diverse and inclusive workforce and better understand their customers.

The seminar on Bridging the Generation Gap was fascinating and opened everyone’s eyes as we delved into the five distinct generations that make up both our workforce and customer base. The focus was on how employers can transform their teams by adapting their leadership, communication, and engagement strategies to better connect with each generation. Local small business panellists shared valuable insights, offering real-life examples of the challenges they’ve faced and the successes they’ve achieved along the way.

As the host of the Cairns Regional Jobs Committee (RJC) which is funded and supported by the Queensland Government, we’re proud to have partnered with government on initiatives like the Meeting of the Minds, Careers Advisors Forum, and Parents & Pathways Seminar. These events help align education pathways with industry needs, giving both students and career changers a clearer direction.

Health Care and Social Services continues to be our region’s largest employer, and we are focused on showcasing the diverse career opportunities across this sector to school students and those considering a career change, through an industry immersion day. Following the success of our Maritime and Marine Careers Expo and Aviation Open Day, we’re excited to announce the #GOHealth Careers Expo in March 2025. If you’re interested in sponsorship, exhibiting or attending as a school, get in touch with us at rjc@cairnschamber.com.au to learn more.

In early September, the Cairns RJC teamed up with industry workforce and industry skills advisors from ACS to co-host a roundtable focused on the future of the workforce in the ICT, finance and business sectors. The event brought together local businesses and industry stakeholders who shared their insights, challenges and big ideas on workforce development and vocational training. The discussions covered everything from emerging trends and the evolving skills landscape to how training programs need to adapt to keep pace with future demands.

Currently we are gearing up for our highly anticipated Business Excellence Awards Gala Ball. Having received extremely high-quality submissions across all award categories, coupled with an incredible entertainment lineup, this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. Even if you haven’t entered, come along and enjoy the business community’s biggest networking event of the year! Have you booked your table yet? Many have and we are filling the room fast, so don’t miss out on this incredible night of nights. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Fresh Faces, Real Impact and What’s Next

: (07) 4031 1838 : yc@cairnschamber.com.au

Chair, Cairns Young Chamber

It’s been a lively few months at the Cairns Young Chamber. We've welcomed some fantastic new committee members, thrown a few events (including one at Edge Hill Bowls Club that got a bit competitive), and launched fresh initiatives to support young professionals in Far North Queensland.

If you're curious about what we've been up to — or thinking of getting involved — here's the scoop.

Meet the new committee members

We’re excited to introduce some fresh faces to our committee, including:

• Jessica Hampton – Our new Committee Manager and an Architectural Graduate at CA Architects. Jessica’s blend of creativity and precision is already helping to keep things running smoothly.

• Rebecca Shield – Joining us as Social Media Manager, Rebecca also works as a Support Experience Coordinator at Mission Australia. With her on board, expect a wave of dynamic, engaging content that truly reflects our vibrant community.

• Georgia McRoberts – Our Events Manager. Georgia also shines as a Business Development Manager at the Cairns Convention Centre. She’s set to create epic events that aren’t just fun but also foster new connections within our community.

• Kaytlin Campbell – Our newest Memberships Manager. Kaytlin is a People and Culture Business Partner at Crystalbrook Collection. We’re excited to see how her expertise will help us grow and engage our member base.

We’re also bidding a fond farewell to Jemma Walker, who has been an incredible asset to the committee over the past two years. Her contributions have been invaluable, and we’re grateful for the lasting impact she's made.

Out and about

The past few months have been a whirlwind of activity. In August, we hosted a social event at Edge Hill Bowls Club, giving young professionals a chance to mingle and channel their inner 'Crackerjack'. It was a fantastic evening of relaxed networking.

We've been busy in the broader community as well. The CYC co-hosted the Young Leaders Breakfast in partnership with Ergon Energy and the Business Liaison Association, bringing together passionate high school students from across Cairns to hear from a panel of inspiring young leaders. Helping to moderate this event was a personal highlight for me, as we delved into practical advice and shared experiences that resonated with the students in the room.

I also had the pleasure of representing CYC at JCU’s Heroes in Business Panel alongside Nikki Giumelli, Ben Cole and Emma Hall. We shared career insights and tips with Year 11 and 12 students — a great opportunity to connect with the next generation and offer some real-world advice.

Finally, Kayla Child and I led a workshop for Carey Group’s Early Professionals Program, focusing on the power of networking, especially when you're just starting out. Big thanks to Carey Group for having us!

Mindful Mornings with the CYC

We’re shaking things up with our new 'Mindful Mornings' series — a unique blend of networking and well-being. Our first event, a Yoga and Coffee Morning at Novotel, is set to be a hit.

Led by Claudia Richardson from Kynd Studio and sponsored by ADhesive Communication, it's a refreshing way for young professionals to start the day. While this event is still on the horizon as I write this, I have no doubt it’ll be a success — keep an eye on our social media for highlights.

Looking ahead

As we look forward, our focus remains on fostering connections and creating opportunities for young professionals in Cairns. We’re growing, evolving and staying focused on what matters — building a thriving, supportive community.

If you’re a business owner with aspiring leaders in your team, consider sponsoring their yearly membership. It's just $50 for professionals and $25 for university students — an investment that opens doors to invaluable experiences and connections.

We're always on the lookout for new ways to engage with our community. Got a suggestion or keen to partner with us? We’d love to hear from you — feel free to reach out!

Together, we’re building a bright future for the next generation of leaders.

Housing Crisis on the Agenda

: (07) 4041 1729

: info@rdatropicalnorth.org.au

Chief Executive Officer

Regional Development Australia Tropical North (RDA)

The investor shift from long-term to holiday rentals, collaborative housing models, and modular housing solutions were the top issues raised at the Tropical North Queensland Housing Summit.

Organised by Regional Development Australia (RDA) Tropical North, Torres Cape Indigenous Councils Alliance (TCICA) and FNQ Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQROC), the Summit brought together more than 100 housing and accommodation stakeholders to discuss the steps forward to ease the region’s housing crisis.

The three organisations will work through the learnings from the Summit to choose key solutions that we can raise together with the relevant governments to advocate for policy change.

Among the issues raised was the high cost of building and insurance in the north delivering poor investment returns, the unwillingness of current occupants to move to smaller premises once their lifestyle changed, and land availability and funding leading to a short supply of social and affordable housing.

Ideas shared at the Summit include initiatives such as prohibiting holiday rentals outside tourist areas to release short-term residential rental accommodation stock.

Our region could also follow Noosa’s lead

where their Mayor successfully wrote to property owners asking them to release their property to the long-term rental market to support essential workers, resulting in 64 properties becoming available.

Student accommodation is in short supply in Cairns, but developers cannot meet this demand as they need to build complexes with at least 400 units to be financially viable. Alternate methods of financing smaller developments need to be investigated.

Community housing is also lacking and incentives to bring Tier 1 Community Housing Service providers to regional Queensland should be identified. These are currently all based in the southeast corner due to the scale of housing stock.

The community housing sector undertakes substantial work but needs a lead agency to give them avenues to aggregate their efforts and to connect them to social investors and social impact bonds.

To reduce the need for community housing, community education needs to be delivered about collaborative housing models for the elderly, essential workers and women over 55.

Freeing up smaller affordable properties could also help. First home buyer grants could focus on two-bedroom units as the first purchase choice for couples with no children. Once

the couples upsize to accommodate growing families, these affordable properties would be available to singles and couples with smaller budgets.

We also discussed advocating to the Queensland Government to work with Indigenous communities to understand the whole of life cost of modular homes and adapt construction methods to reduce maintenance costs and increase the home’s lifespan. A good example of construction adaptation was showcased by QBuild, with the modular timber homes manufactured at the Cairns Remote Accommodation Apprenticeship Centre.

Indigenous councils require completion of their Local Government Housing Action Plans, ensuring the State also provides capacity for delivery of these plans by councils. A new National Partnership Agreement on Remote Indigenous Housing would support overcrowding in remote communities and potentially ease the homelessness situation in Cairns with remote community residents returning to communities if adequate housing was made available.

Incentive Event a Boost for Tourism

: (07) 4015 1201 : ceo@ttnq.org.au

Chief Executive Officer

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ)

Cairnsis basking in the success of hosting Australian Next 2024 which last month brought 80 business events buyers and 15 media from around the world to understand why there is nothing like Australia for their next incentive.

Corporate incentive events are favoured by large international companies to reward and motivate their high achievers. These lavish events result in a massive boost for the tourism economy. The Amway China incentive, for example, brought 6000 delegates to Cairns in 2019 with each spending almost seven times as much as the average leisure visitor.

The international delegates at Australia Next met with 96 Australian industry representatives, including 18 Tourism Tropical North Queensland members, and experienced the best of Cairns with many seeing the Great Barrier Reef for the first time.

Australia Next showcased the region’s expertise and natural beauty after a decade of strong investment in infrastructure. It will leave a legacy of understanding from around the world, including emerging markets, whose key business events buyers will be exposed to the vibrant ‘Cairns & Great Barrier Reef’ brand story that builds

on our destination’s natural assets.

In addition, we hosted the New Zealand delegation on a pre and post event famil showcasing incentive offerings in Cairns and Port Douglas. Tourism Australia delivered this year’s event in partnership with Tourism Tropical North Queensland and Tourism and Events Queensland with the assistance of grant funding received from the Australian Government under the International Tourism Recovery Program administered by Austrade.

Business events in our region not only inject at least $130 million per annum to our economy, they lift the profile of our region globally, driving trade, investment, tourism and our region’s liveability story.

Business Events Cairns & Great Barrier, in partnership with the Cairns Convention Centre and leading event hotels, utilised the funding provided by Cairns Regional Council and the State Government to help bring in $52 million of this business for our destination over the past year.

With the refurbished Cairns Convention Centre in operation for the first full year, Tourism Tropical North Queensland embarked on a two-tiered approach of increasing awareness of ‘Cairns &

Great Barrier Reef’ as a business events destination.

We did this through marketing activity to inspire and inform decision-makers, targeted partnerships, educationals, and site inspections supported by a bid fund.

In line with Tourism Australia, we focused on key markets and aviation access, targeting New Zealand, North America, Singapore, the UK and Europe in addition to our domestic markets.

We partnered with the Cairns Convention Centre through their Discover Cairns program to host a Professional Conference Organiser educational to celebrate the Centre’s expansion and significantly supported the annual MCI Conference.

This resulted in 60 key representatives across the association, corporate and incentive sectors in the region for three days.

Australian Next and this year’s calendar of conferences and incentives will further build on our destination’s profile for business events as the delegates return home to share stories of their Cairns experiences with colleagues and clients.

Critical Time to be Informed

Chief Executive Officer

Advance Cairns

With the State election just weeks away, there has never been a more critical time for us all to be engaged and informed about the commitments those vying to lead the next Queensland State Government have set out. It is important to understand the potential impact this can have on the future of our region and for our communities. The choices made in this election will shape Far North Queensland’s trajectory for years, if not decades, to come.

Having spent most of my career in Hong Kong, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for the democracy that we enjoy in Australia and ensure I never take this for granted. The lack of resources for traditional media has meant that many of us operate in an information vacuum. It is critically important that we ensure that our vote at the coming election is lodged based on an informed and objective assessment of the options.

At Advance Cairns, we have been actively engaging with all sides of politics over the past months, championing initiatives that will drive widespread economic benefit across our region. In advocacy and economic development, collaboration is key. It is the glue that ensures change takes hold and has enduring impact.

I was pleased to attend the Developing Northern Australia conference in Karratha, in Western Australia’s remote north Pilbara region, to learn that Cairns will play host to next year’s event. Supported by the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia, Cairns Regional Council, Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Advance Cairns and Regional Development Australia Tropical North, this conference will serve as a vital platform to showcase the opportunities and ambition within our region. It also presents a chance to draw on best practice from across Northern Australia, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable economic growth.

One of the key takeaways from the conference was the shared challenge of resource scarcity across Northern Australia. This underscores the importance of maximising our existing resources and emphasises that our success relies on collaboration.

In the coming month, our focus shifts from State Parliament to Federal Parliament, when a delegation of nearly 30 business leaders from across the region travels to Canberra to advocate for priorities crucial to unlocking our region's full potential. Led by Advance Cairns, the Cairns Chamber

of Commerce and Tourism Tropical North Queensland, we will meet with senior leaders from the Federal Government, Opposition and cross-benches. Our collective mission is clear: to highlight the funding required to realise the untapped potential of Australia’s most internationally connected region. The strength of the region will be underpinned even further through the fact that our delegation coincides with that of FNQROC – the organisation representing 12 councils from across the region. Together we will ensure that the priorities and voices of the region will be heard.

It is this strength in our collective voice – whether advocating across Northern Australia for broader initiatives or for investments in health, marine, aviation and roads in the Far North – that will bring dividends.

For more information on the key areas we believe are crucial for our region’s future, please visit our website at www.advancecairns.com. And as you cast your vote on October 26, make sure it is an informed one.

OVERHAUL!!!

Queensland’s landmark property legislation begins 1 August 2025!

Discussion has been rampant since the introduction of the (then) Property Law Bill 2023 aimed at modernising and simplifying property laws in Queensland.

Revamping 50 years of legislation in a rapidly evolving landscape is no simple task but, finally, the (now) Property Law Act 2023 (“Act”) will replace the outdated Property Law Act 1974 beginning 1 August 2025 and introducing several key reforms to enhance transparency and efficiency in Queensland property transactions.

1. Key Objectives – Simplification and Modernisation

The primary objective of the Act is to make property laws more accessible and easier to understand for the public.

The Act consolidates various provisions related to property into a cohesive framework while simultaneously abolishing obsolete estates and rules, such as the abolition of quit rent and escheat for dissolved corporations (you probably have no idea what these… which is exactly the point).

These changes reflect the evolving nature of property ownership and the desire for all stakeholders to understand the framework under which their – often most valuable assets – are governed.

2. Enhanced Consumer Protection

One of the significant changes is the introduction of a statutory seller disclosure scheme (those who have ventured into the New South Wales and Victorian property markets will be familiar with this).

This scheme mandates sellers of freehold land must provide comprehensive information about the property to potential buyers before any contracts are finalised to increase transparency and reduce disputes arising from undisclosed issues.

Consumer protection is a central theme of the Act and, by requiring detailed seller disclosures, the Act ensures that

buyers have all information necessary to make informed decisions. This includes details of any encumbrances, easements, or other legal interests affecting the property.

The Act also outlines clear procedures for the creation and disposition of interests in property, further safeguarding the rights of buyers and sellers.

3. Impact on Property Transactions

Introduction of the Act is expected to have a significant impact on property transactions in Queensland. In particular, the statutory disclosure scheme is expected to foster a more transparent and consumer-friendly property market.

4.

Relationship with Other

Legislation

The Act explicitly states its scope is to all land, property, and associated documents within Queensland providing a clear and consistent legal environment for property transactions.

5. Future Steps

Looking ahead, we can expect to see release of new forms and precedents from the Depart of Justice and Attorney General in October 2024 to allow stakeholders an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new framework.

6. Conclusion

The Act represents a significant step forward in the evolution of property laws in Queensland and all stakeholders should seek to familiarise themselves with it as soon as possible. As the overhaul begins, we recommend contacting the expert team at WGC Lawyers to assist in understanding and implanting changes to your property.

The Power Of Video

Danae Jones is Managing Director of PR & Marketing firm Danae Jones Consulting Pty Ltd : danae@danaejones.com.au : www.danaejones.com.au

Video is gaining momentum online like never before and if you aren’t producing video content to promote your brand, than you’d be wise to give it some consideration as it really could bring you the attention on your social media platforms that you desire.

The algorithms that work in the background on social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc, have been set to like video content over text. So if you’re wondering why you can be on Facebook and have someone’s video delivered to your news feed time and time again when it isn’t event Sponsored/ Boosted, this is why.

Did you know that video achieves three times more reach for you on social media platforms?

After a recent release of video content surveys globally the CEO of Animoto, Brad Jefferson (an online video creation company) said “Businesses need to learn to ‘speak video’ fluently if they want to connect with their customers on social media.”

Another important note is once the video content is created, where to put it?

Video can boost SEO and website rankings

A video on your website’s page improves its quality in Google’s eyes and increases visitors’ time on your page. This can mean a higher ranking on a search engine results

page (SERP). A higher SERP position is what you’re aiming for.

Leverage multiple channels

You don’t have to put that video on your website only though, share it with clients and prospects through your eMail Marketing and also post it on other platforms, and even reedit to suit if required on the following:

• Instagram and Facebook Reels & Stories.

• LinkedIn

• YouTube

• Webinars / Guest Speaking spots you undertake

There is no question that video is dominating and the Wyzowl survey results confirm this. It is proven through multiple pieces of extensive research and analytics that it has also become a preferred way for people across the world to consume.

In the Wyzowl survey, when consumers were asked: “Where both text and video are available on the same web page, how would you prefer to learn about a product or service?”

- 80 percent said video

When companies were asked ... “Does your business use video as a marketing tool?”

- 63 percent said yes

That means the other 37% of companies either don’t have a video strategy or they’re late and now need to play catch up.

Animoto’s survey of 1,000 customers and 500 marketers about the state of social video marketing found some key insights. Video is BIG, especially on mobile devices.

- 84 percent of consumers say they watch social video content on mobile devices - 81 percent of marketers say they optimise their social videos for mobile, which includes things like planning for sound-off viewing - 39 percent of marketers create videos in square and/or vertical formats.

According to the customers in the survey, this is what they are more likely to share:

- What’s funny - What’s emotional/ inspirational - What’s educational

And what they are more likely to like:

- What’s funny - What’s emotional - “Behindthe-scenes” looks at the company

The bigger finding which is something I have been preaching for years is, people are over the hard sell and hard-sells simply don’t work anymore.

For business owners and managers you will always want to know about your return on investment and how many sales have been converted through your marketing activity. With online video content Wyzowl’s research shows that 64 percent of consumers say they watched a marketing video on Facebook that influenced a purchasing decision within the last month.

So how does your ability to influence purchasing decisions with consumers online stack up? If you feel it needs some work, it’s not too late. It is important to note that a lot of the stats I have quoted have a dominant American consumer base. But we follow America when it comes to marketing every single time, we are literally only a year behind them these days at most. So start your planning now and getting ahead of the game with your video content.

Creating quality, engaging and effective online video content is not easy and this is exactly why companies such as marketing & video production agencies and editing software such as Quik, Capcut, Animoto, Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple iMovie, After Effects amongst many others exist.

It takes time, patience, creativity and a solid content strategy to make sure your videos and other content work to serve your marketing needs. Having a professional produce it for you does not have to cost the earth either, so don’t be afraid to reach out to video producers locally as many of them now have online video content packages that they offer which are very affordable.

Safer Together Cairns

SERGEANT CARY COOLICAN

Cairns Police Crime Prevention

Co-ordinator

Did you know that connected communities are safer communities? Whether connected via shared locations, common ideas, backgrounds or lived experiences, or just community connections and social relationships via social media. Having those connections is essential to empowering individuals to promote a safe and inclusive community.

Joining community groups, looking out for your neighbours, and building resilience in numbers, helps bring people together to tackle common issues faced. Whether it be residents in your street or unit complex, colleagues in the workforce, other businesses in your field, organisations or institutions, all individuals connect by sharing a common purpose, and communities then strengthen, grow, and thrive.

Busy lives, larger populations, and a desire for a safe space in the privacy of your own home has seen community spirit dwindle over the years. To help reignite communities, local police have launched Safer Together Cairns, which is a Queensland Police Service community safety initiative designed to reduce community fear of crime and increase feelings of safety among our community.

We have new enhanced resources which focus on personal and property safety, and we aim to empower residents to participate in safeguarding their neighbourhood and building a more resilient greater Cairns community.

While local police conduct patrols and apprehend perpetrators, we also want to share our insights into how opportunistic offenders operate and how you can help protect your own property and stay safer together.

Tips and information included range from home and vehicle security tips, security checklists for renters and seniors, information for victims of property crime, personal safety information, general crime prevention information and neighbour information cards.

You can also join the CCTV Community Camera Alliance by registering your closed circuit television (CCTV) with local police. This initiative is an opportunity for you to assist local police via the registration of your CCTV, which then makes it much quicker for officers to identify potential homes and businesses that have CCTV in the area where an offence has occurred. This can save countless hours door knocking and

searching local streets for CCTV.

We have a suite of resources from a drop down menu, which includes translated resources in English, Japanese, Nepalese, Swahili and Chinese. We have added some practical safety strategies and crime prevention videos that provide you a step by step guide on how to maximise your home and vehicle security and personal safety in general: https://www.police.qld.gov.au/safetyand-preventing-crime/safer-together/safer-together cairns

Similarly, we have a link to the QPS stolen vehicle portal so you can check stolen vehicles and help police by report sightings in our community. Safer Together Cairns is a one stop location where you can view crime data, locate support for victims of crime and contacts for other organisations, view crime data, and even report offences online.

A Five-Step Routine for Reactive Skin

: (07) 4032 3121

: senseofbeauty.com.au

Visit our DMK beauty salon in Cairns and let us pamper you with exceptional service, top-quality products, and warm hospitality. Trust us to make you feel good, look great, and embrace your confidence.

‘Reactive skin’ is another way to say sensitive skin.

The International Journal of Cosmetic Science defines it as a skin condition characterised by abnormally high reactivity to environmental factors. Do you have it? Sensitive skin can occur at any age. It’s important to be aware of what triggers your skin’s overreaction because irritants will vary from one person to another.

There is no definitive list of symptoms to diagnose reactive skin, but dermatologists look into a few telltale signs such as skin that becomes blotchy or red when exposed to certain elements, like specific skincare formulas and UV rays. Sometimes, you may experience a feeling of tightness, stinging, burning, and itching.

How to choose products for sensitive skin

It can be tricky to use over-thecounter and regular off-the-shelf skincare products for sensitive skin. That’s because they may contain

irritants, like alcohol and fragrance. For best results, consider looking into specially formulated products, like those made by DMK Skincare.

Once you find the right products, it is important to use them religiously and follow a skincare routine for reactive skin:

Cleanser

Use a gentle and effective cleanser that can remove impurities and unclog pores without causing dryness. Check out DMK Deep Pore Cleanser for normal to oily skin, or a gentler formula like the DMK Milk Cleanser.

Oils

Avoid astringents or alcohol-based oils. Look for one with a calming ingredient that can balance the pH levels of the skin, soothe your skin, and remove remaining dirt or makeup or sunscreen residue.

Serum

Serums target specific skin concerns like dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. If you have very sensitive

skin, try DMK skincare products like Beta Gel, a versatile serum that also works on reactive skin.

Moisturiser

Use a non-comedogenic and fragrance-free water-based, gel, or cream moisturiser, which will hydrate your skin and minimise irritation.

Sunscreen

Yes—you need sunscreen even if you have sensitive skin. Just make sure it is broad-spectrum, safe for sensitive skin, and non-comedogenic, like DMK Soleil Defence SPF 50+.

All the products you need to calm sensitive skin can be found at DMKskin. Our solutions won’t just fix the symptoms. We solve the problem from the root, making sure that your skin’s function is restored to homeostasis to stop being reactive. Moreover, we’re focused on restoring your confidence by helping you regain control of your skin. When you’re ready to start your DMK Skincare, we’d love to hear from you at Sense of Beauty.

AKT Hair Trendz: Welcome to the Beginning of Beautiful Hair

In the heart of Freshwater, a hair salon is redefining the art of beauty. AKT Hair Trendz, owned by the dynamic duo Adele and Kelso Tavares, isn’t just a place to get your hair done — it’s a sanctuary where transformation meets relaxation, and where every client’s unique vision comes to life.

A Touch of South African Flair

Step into AKT Hair Trendz, and you’re immediately enveloped in an atmosphere of warmth and sophistication. The soft pink hues and soothing ambience create a welcoming retreat from the outside world. But it’s not just the decor that sets this salon apart — it’s the wealth of experience and passion brought by master stylist Adele.

With 26 years in the industry, Adele’s journey from South Africa to Australia is as colourful as the transformations she creates. “I worked in an upmarket South African salon for 20 years,” Adele recalls with a smile. “But bringing that experience to Freshwater has been a dream come true.”

More Than Just a Haircut

At AKT Hair Trendz, every service is an experience. From precision cuts to daring colour transformations, each treatment is tailored to the client’s unique needs and desires. “We believe in building long-term relationships with our clients,” Adele explains. “It’s not just about the cut or colour — it’s about understanding each person’s hair journey and being part of their vision.”

The salon offers a comprehensive range of services, blonde expertise, balayage, keratin smoothing, perms, and even wedding packages. But what truly sets AKT Hair Trendz apart is their commitment to ongoing education. “We are constantly learning and upgrading our skills to the latest styles, and precision cutting techniques, but mostly we love sharing our knowledge,” Adele says. “Whether it’s a quick styling tip or an in-depth lesson on blow-drying techniques, we want our clients to feel confident about their hair every day, not just when they leave the salon.”

A Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

In a world where conscious consumerism is on the rise, AKT Hair Trendz stands out with its commitment to quality and sustainability. The salon exclusively uses and sells products that are 100 percent Australian-made, free from sulphates and parabens, and never tested on animals.

“We’ve dedicated countless hours to sourcing the finest products,” Adele says proudly. “Our clients deserve products that are not only effective but also align with their values.”

A Salon for Everyone

Inclusivity isn’t just a buzzword at AKT Hair Trendz — it’s a core value. The salon caters to clients from all walks of life, offering a specially modified basin for those with mobility challenges and ensuring a welcoming space for everyone, including the LGBTQ+ community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“We want everyone to feel at home here,” Adele says. “Beauty knows no boundaries, and neither do we.”

The AKT Hair Trendz Experience

What can you expect when you book an appointment at AKT Hair Trendz? Picture this: You’re greeted warmly as you enter, and you’re

offered a variety of soothing teas, coffees or a juice.

As you settle into the chair, Adele or one of her skilled stylists takes the time to truly listen to your hair dreams and concerns.

Then, the magic begins. With expert hands and an artist’s eye, your stylist works to bring your vision to life. All the while, you’re relaxing in an atmosphere that feels more like a high-end spa than a typical hair salon.

“Our goal is for every client to leave feeling like a million dollars,” Adele says. “But more than that, we want them to leave with the knowledge and tools to maintain that feeling long after they’ve left our chairs.”

A Cut Above the Rest

With its blend of expertise, passion, and genuine care for clients, AKT Hair Trendz isn’t just a salon— it’s a destination. Whether you’re looking for a quick trim or a complete makeover, you’ll find more than just a new hairstyle. You’ll discover a team that’s dedicated to making your hair dreams a reality, one strand at a time.

For your convenience they offer two late nights a week until 7pm.

Their loyalty program keeps on giving and a referral means everyone gets a $30 hot towel treatment on the house.

Back To Where It All Began

Passionate respected journalist, trusted newsreader and proud Queenslander Sharyn Ghidella has returned to Network 10 as a presenter for Queensland’s 10 News First

Since September, Sharyn has been presenting Queensland’s 10 News First bulletin from the network’s Brisbane studios.

A much-loved, veteran journalist of 38 years, Sharyn is bringing her extensive experience and passion for news back to the network where she first made her mark.

Sharyn said: “Returning to 10 News First feels like coming home. Network 10 provided me my first opportunity to work in a metropolitan newsroom and I have nothing but fond memories of my time there in the early 90s.

“To be returning to present a new local news service, with even more content relevant to Queenslanders, represents an exciting opportunity for me.

“Viewers recently have been very vocal about what they want in a news service, and 10 News First is tailoring its new local bulletin to meet those viewer needs.

“10 News First has long been committed to keeping its audience informed about the issues and events that matter to them, both at home and overseas, and I can’t wait to join this dedicated and highly professional team in the Queensland newsroom.”

Erin Edwards, Executive Editor 10 News First Queensland, said: “Sharyn is a masterful journalist. She deep dives into every story to give Queenslanders the facts without fuss. Sharyn loves Queensland. She understands Queensland.

“We can’t wait to start a new chapter at 10 News First Queensland.”

Martin White, Head of Broadcast News, Paramount Australia and New Zealand, said: “This is a great day for 10 in Queensland. We’re firm believers in local journalism and giving our audiences the best possible content – which aligns perfectly with Sharyn, Brisbane’s number one newsreader.

“We’re thrilled to welcome her back to 10 and can’t wait to get started.”

10 News First presenter, Sandra Sully, will hand the reins over to Sharyn next month.

Sharyn thanked Sandra for building 10 News First into the powerhouse that it is, acknowledging her as one of the best in the business.

Sandra Sully said: “I’ve known Sharyn for many years, and I’m thrilled to be handing the Brisbane bulletin over to another Queenslander. It’s wonderful to have our local news in such good hands, and I’m delighted to welcome Sharyn home to 10. I can’t wait to see the great things she and our local Queensland team will do together.”

Sharyn’s career is a testament to her dedication and passion for journalism. Growing up in the North Queensland town of Babinda, Sharyn’s early years were marked by a deep love for reading and a burgeoning interest in journalism.

In 1983, Sharyn moved to Brisbane to pursue a Bachelor of Business, Communications. It was during this time that she discovered her passion for journalism and news writing.

An internship at North Queensland Television (NQTV) marked the beginning of a swift ascent through the ranks, moving from their Cairns newsroom to the Townsville studios in 1989. Here, Sharyn honed her skills in producing, reporting, and reading—all essential elements of storytelling.

By 1990, at 24 years old, Sharyn was recruited by Brisbane’s Channel 10 newsroom as an on-the-road reporter and update presenter.

In 1992, Sharyn transitioned to the Nine Network in Sydney, starting as a reporter before being promoted to present Daybreak, an early-morning news program. Sharyn soon became the regular newsreader on the Today Show.

In 2007, Sharyn joined the Seven Network and presented the network’s Brisbane bulletin since 2013. Sharyn recently departed Seven after an illustrious 17-year tenure with the network.

Sharyn’s career comes full circle when she returns to the 10 News First Brisbane news desk in September.

Big Talk One Fire Marked 17 Years With

Biggest Ever Festival In Lush Parklands Venue

UMI Arts’ 17th and biggest-ever iteration of its free, family-friendly First Nations festival, Big Talk One Fire, drew large crowds for its free program of activities, dance and music, culminating in a stellar performance by fan favourite and 2023 Australian Idol winner Royston Noell.

Big Talk One Fire took place in the lush Munro Martin Parklands on Saturday, 7 September 2024.

With support from the Cairns Regional Council and a host of local sponsors, UMI Arts’ Big Talk One Fire comprised an art and craft market and activities for kids, food stalls, workshops, and storytelling alongside an exciting program of stage entertainment crisscrossing musical and dance genres.

According to UMI Arts’ Artistic Director Lisa Michl Komanggén, OAM Big Talk One Fire is one of the organisation’s much-loved events. It also plays an integral role in achieving the organisation’s mission to preserve, strengthen, maintain,

and celebrate the rich diversity of Indigenous arts and culture.

“For the past 17 years, Big Talk has brought people together for a joyful afternoon in beautiful surroundings.

“UMI Arts is always immensely proud to present this allinclusive event that delivers the best of North Queensland Indigenous culture to a large and varied audience within the gorgeous inner-city venue, Munro Martin Parklands,” Ms Michl Ko-manggén said.

“Always a highlight of Big Talk One Fire is our concert featuring local Indigenous bands, traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural dance and pop-up visual art and markets,” she said.

“We thank everyone from across the city and region who joined us last month in learning about and celebrating the strength and vibrancy of this region’s First Nations people, arts and culture,” she said.

Dedication to Guiding Recognised

“I’m truly humbled by this recognition,” Jo said.

APASSION for Girl Guides has been recognised, with local businesswoman Jo Lees, owner of Jo’s Scissors of Gold in Oceana Walk Retail Arcade, being honoured with the prestigious Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

The award was presented on Friday 13th September by the Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young.

Jo, who has been involved with the Girl Guides since the age of seven, was recognised for her decades of commitment to empowering young girls and fostering leadership skills in the Cairns area.

The OAM is one of the highest honours granted to Australian citizens, celebrating exceptional service to the nation and to community.

“I’m truly humbled by this recognition,” Jo said.

“Ordinary people like me just do what we love each day, and to be awarded something as prestigious as the OAM is overwhelming. I have always believed in giving back to my community, especially to the youth through Girl Guides, and it’s been a joy to serve for so many years.”

The award follows nearly two years of review, with the nomination remaining a surprise to Jo until shortly before the public announcement. Her family, including her 91-year-old mother, attended the ceremony, marking a special moment for everyone involved.

As well as a prominent member of the Girl Guides for many years, Jo’s hair salon, Jo’s Scissors of Gold, has been an established Cairns institution for almost sixty years and is situated in Oceana Walk Retail Arcade between Lake St and Grafton St.

Formerly known as Mr Leonard’s Golden Scissors, Jo began her apprenticeship as a hair stylist there in 1967, before taking over the business some twenty years later. The salon has served the Cairns community for over five decades, with Jo’s passion and commitment endearing her to many and earning a loyal clientele.

“We are very proud to have Jo as a longstanding tenant of Oceana Walk and congratulate her on this very esteemed and deserved award,” Jamie Gray, owner of Oceana Walk Retail Arcade said.

“We have wonderful tenants at the shopping arcade, all of whom are passionate about the Cairns community and celebrate being locals.”
