PUBLISHER’S NOTE

WOW! How did we get here so fast!? I know they say time speeds up when get older, but seriously the speed at which this year has flown by is ridiculous don’t you think?! I have spoken to so many people feeling the same way recently, and my true belief is that this year has been a year with so much going on that people have not even had time to catch their breathe in the middle of it all. If we think back, it all started with the FNQ Floods in December 2023, then there was the carnage that it left behind and the immense clean up to get people’s lives, businesses and communities back on track. Everyone doing their little bit to assist in whatever way they could. Then it was as if nothing happened, and everyone was back into the machine of business and life and trying to keep the wheels turning in our community. We experienced the loss of many big names in our community and so too around the world. Cost of living pressures hit many hard too, but everyone kept just getting on with it as we do up here in FNQ. We just get on with it, without complaint. As one of our clients has always said to me, “when the going gets tough, it’s foot to the metal and all guns blazing!” … and it feels like that is exactly what our community has collectively done in the past 12 months. All of those lows have been beautifully intertwined with so many high points and big high five moments for our region, and the emotional toll that this has taken on people I think it’s worn many out. People are exhausted and rightly so. And “Christmas can’t come fast enough” is the collective chant I hear coming out of everyone’s mouths. I feel you, I really do. But as I sit back writing the final Publisher’s Note for 2024 and think about all our community has endured over the past year. I sit back with the greatest sense of pride with how we have continued to support one another and lift each other up and rise to each and every occasion despite the hurdles. How bloody good are the people of Far North Queensland? I mean really … I am not too sure those southern folk could cop what we’ve had thrown at us and continue to show up, stand up, fight back and do it all with a smile and a “she’ll be right attitude” – I’m just not sure they’re

It’s a Man’s Issue

DR CURTIS RAYMENT

DrCurtis Rayment recently hosted workshops at three Cairns schools to educate students about ‘It’s a Man’s Issue’.

In conjunction with Dr Jack Bryant, Curtis visited around 900 students at Cairns State High School, St Augustine’s College and Mary MacKillop College, reporting very positive outcomes and levels of engagement.

In December last year, the Zonta Club of Cairns Inc. hosted an event at the Cairns Regional Council, so final year medical student Curtis could inform schools, sporting clubs and other organisations about the program he established for 12–18 year-old-boys and girls after he became enraged about the rape of a female friend and the issues surrounding that.

Zonta club past president Carol Shipway said Curtis and Jack delivered workshops that engaged boys and girls to tackle the problems of high rates of rape and violence against women and girls, toxic male cultures, coercion, consent, respect and healthy relationships, with the aim to reduce social ills so prevalent today.

“Zonta Cairns avidly supports the program as part of its campaign 16 Days of Activism and undertook to widely promote the program and workshops to schools and other organisations in the region,” Carol said.

Other organisations including Cairns Safer Streets also endorse the program, with the workshops being held in November and December.

Visit www.itsamansissue.com and Instagram for further information.

Food Plays Crucial Role in Economy

Managing Director

Food manufacturing in Far North Queensland (FNQ) plays a pivotal role in the region’s economy, leveraging its rich agricultural resources and unique tropical climate to produce a diverse array of food products. From processing local fruits and vegetables to creating value-added products, the food manufacturing sector is integral not only to FNQ’s economic landscape but also to its cultural identity.

Further to the south, on the Sunshine Coast, the Government is funding the construction of “Turbine”. It is set to become Australia’s leading industry-based food and beverage research, education and commercialisation facility with the precinct expected to gain national and international recognition as a blueprint for collaborative manufacturing. This end-to-end collaborative food and beverage precinct is a world first, providing lucrative opportunities for businesses at all stages and sizes to build, scale and export, all under one roof.

There have been many conversations about the feasibility of building a similar government funded facility in Far North Queensland. A Government funded facility would stand in competition to the many privately owned manufacturing facilities in the region. While there are many advantages to a central, shared facility in the region it is not commercially viable without the production of its own in-house product. This case has been proven by the demise of the FNQ Food Incubator in January of this year.

Upon the closure of the FNQ Food Incubator, many of the clients who had intended to use the commercial kitchens were left high and dry desperately seeking a new venue who could accommodate them.

AgriFood Catalyst has worked side by side with those new food manufacturing businesses to find the facilities they need and to support those facilities to welcome them. As a result, we are building a database of food manufacturing facilities in the region who are willing to share their expertise, infrastructure and resources.

AgriFood Catalyst is working closely with the Department of Agriculture and industry organisations such as FNQ Growers, and the Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers to support privately owned manufacturing facilities in the region to be commercially viable and work with emerging manufacturers. That support is taking the form of training and resources about food handling practices, industry developments and intellectual property.

Through collaboration with manufacturers in the region, we are also connecting the ecosystem of food manufacturers from the farm gate for fresh ingredients, to support services such as food scientists for recipe development and shelflife testing, to marketing, export opportunities, packaging suppliers and more. With this support, we believe that we will see our local food manufacturing industry flourish and grow in the years to come. If you would like to work with us to support the food manufacturing industry in our region please email us at taste@agrifoodcatalyst. com.au.

Food manufacturing in Far North Queensland is a dynamic and essential component of the regional economy. With its diverse agricultural base, focus on value-added production, and commitment to sustainability, the sector is well-positioned for growth and innovation. As local producers continue to adapt to market trends and consumer preferences, AgriFood Catalyst and the FNQ’s food manufacturing industry will play a critical role in shaping the region’s economic future while celebrating its rich agricultural heritage.

Trust Your Gut: Unlocking The Power Of A Healthy Gut!

Co-Founder and Pharmacist

The gut microbiome is a hot topic right now, and for good reason. This complex ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms in our digestive tract is vital to our overall health. From digestion to mental well-being, a balanced microbiome is key to feeling your best. Let’s explore how nurturing your gut can transform your health from the inside out!

Understanding the Gut Microbiome

The gut microbiome consists of beneficial bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microbes in our intestines. They break down food, synthesise vitamins, and regulate the immune system. When balanced, these microbes support optimal health; when disrupted, they can contribute to a range of health issues.

The Link Between Gut Health and Wellbeing

1. Digestive Health

A diverse gut microbiome aids digestion by breaking down complex carbs and fibres, improving nutrient absorption, and preventing issues like bloating and constipation.

2. Immune Function

Did you know that around 70% of your immune system resides in your gut? A healthy microbiome strengthens immune responses, reduces inflammation, and protects against infections. Imbalances, on the other hand, can trigger chronic inflammation and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriasis.

3. Mental Health

The gut-brain axis connects your gut and brain. A healthy gut influences mental well-being by producing neurotransmitters like serotonin, known as the “feel-good” hormone. Disruptions

in gut bacteria have been linked to anxiety and depression.

Nurturing Your Gut Microbiome

So, how can you cultivate a healthier gut microbiome? Here are some practical tips to get you started:

1. Eat a diverse diet, rich in pre- and probiotics, protein and healthy fats

Variety is key for a healthy gut. A diet rich in different fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes supports a diverse microbiome. For a food rich in protein, fibre and healthy fats, try Hemp Foods Organic Hemp Seeds by adding them to a smoothie, sprinkling them onto oatmeal or yoghurt or topping a salad to give a mild nutty flavour. They also bake wonderfully into muffins or breads.

If you’re considering supplements, explore our selection of pre- and probiotics at WholeLife Pharmacy & Healthfoods. Our favourites include:

• Activated Probiotics BIOME Daily™ Probiotic

•Activated Probiotics BIOME IBS™ Probiotic

2. Include fermented foods

Fermented foods are rich in probiotics that boost gut health, replenish gut flora, and improve digestion and immune function. Incorporate foods such as yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and miso into your diet. Here are some of our favourites:

• Peace, Love and Vegetables Super-Kraut

Kim-Chi

•Kehoe’s Beetroot Cashew Cheese

Check out the large assortment of fermented food items on offer in-store at WholeLife Pharmacy & Healthfoods.

3. Minimise processed and sugary foods

Processed and sugary foods can upset the balance of your gut microbiome, promoting the growth of harmful bacteria. Reducing your intake of sugary snacks and beverages can help maintain a healthy microbial balance. Our WholeLife Pharmacy & Healthfoods stores offer a wide range of whole, unprocessed foods and snacks, as well as low sugar drinks.

4. Stay Hydrated

We all know the importance of drinking plenty of water! Being well hydrated is essential for maintaining the lining of the intestines and supporting digestion. It also

helps in the removal of waste and toxins from the body. Flush that bad stuff out!

If you’re someone who sweats a lot, try a hydration supplement with electrolytes, like Pure Sports Nutrition or Switch Hydrate or X50 teas.

Are you all about efficiency? Accomplish two things at once with Aloe Vera of Australia Natural Aloe Juice. This pure cold-pressed blend hydrates while also promoting a healthy digestive system.

5. Manage Stress

Chronic stress can negatively impact gut health by altering the microbiome and increasing intestinal permeability. Practise stress management techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or regular exercise to support a balanced gut environment. Look for our premium 6mm yoga mat in store.

6. Get Quality Sleep

Adequate sleep is important for so many reasons and that’s no different for gut health. Poor sleep patterns can disrupt the microbiome, leading to imbalances. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to support both your gut and overall health. Talk to your WholeLife Pharmacy & Healthfoods pharmacist about nutritional supplements or sleeping aids to help you.

Gut health is more than just a buzzword or fad; it’s the foundation of overall well-being. By prioritising your gut health through diet, hydration, stress management, and sleep, you can help unlock a range of benefits that extend far beyond digestion.

Come to WholeLife Pharmacy & Healthfoods for everything you need for a happier, healthier gut—and a healthier you!

5 Strategies for Connection and Closeness

BIANNKA BRANNIGAN

In the rhythm of everyday life, it’s easy for even the closest couples to feel like they’re drifting apart. With so many demands on our time, finding ways to stay connected can feel like a challenge. But in reality, building closeness doesn’t always require grand gestures; small, intentional actions often have the biggest impact. Here are 5 strategies for greater connection and closeness.

Shifting from complaint to request

Letting your partner know up front what you need from them will support you to get what you need and take the guessing work out of the equation for your partner. It might look something like this… “Right now, I need you to listen without asking any questions and put your arm around me” or “can you come and help me do X”. The thing is…we can’t get angry for something we haven’t asked for. In saying that, there will be times that despite your best efforts to let your partner know what you need, they may not respond with generosity and you will feel hurt, angry, unheard etc. For this, you will need to have a good process of repair to help you move back into closeness.

Speaking out with love

First…before you respond to something your partner did or didn’t do…notice how you are feeling. If you’re not the greatest fan of your partner at this point, take some space for yourself to get regulated and remember love. Remember that the person you are

about to talk to, is the person that you love – remember what you want…“If I do or say X, will that bring me closer to my partner or further away?”

Utilise a Repair Framework

If the topic feels tricky, lean into a framework like the one I teach to couples below.

1. Ask your partner if they are willing to listen – if they’re not in a good head space, make a time for when you’re both regulated to talk.

2. If your partner is ready to listen, follow the next four steps;

a. Describe what you saw/heard about the situation/event – just database information – no more than a few sentences.

For example: “you left your wet towel on the bed again”

b. Describe the story you made up about it

“when you leave your wet towel on the bed, the story I make up about it is that you don’t care about how much work that creates for me and you really don’t care about me”

c. How you feel about it

“And that makes me feel sad and angry”

d. What you would like to happen in the future

“I would really like it if you could hang your towel in the bathroom so that the bed sheets don’t get wet and smelly which creates additional work for me. I would rather spend that time hanging out with you doing fun things”.

3. Then let go of the outcome… Your partner may or may not hang the towel in the bathroom but there’s more chance of that happening now as your

partner has a greater understanding of your perspective.

Responding with generosity When listening to your partner, your primary goal is to restore your partner’s feeling of harmony and to feel better. First listen without interruption…really listen so you can understand what is happening for them. Responding with generosity is about being curious to your partner’s experience – “what’s that like for you” – even when you’re behind their pain and suffering… In this sense, you are being curious and asking them how you can support them – “what do you need from me right now”, “How can I do this differently in the future” and take responsibility…rather than becoming defensive.

Cherishing

Appreciate your partner. Keep a gratitude journal of all the beautiful things they bring to the relationship and let them know. Do this throughout the day. This also means appreciating the efforts your partner is making in doing their life differently – even if they’re not doing it 100% as you requested. Cherish your partner’s efforts. Believe in them!

Cherishing means talking about your relationship in positive regard and protecting what you have both worked so hard to achieve.

Chamber Committed to Business Community

: (07) 4031 1838

: info@cairnschamber.com.au

Chief Executive Officer

Cairns Chamber of Commerce

The Cairns Chamber of Commerce is committed to supporting our local SMEs by informing, connecting, and most importantly, listening to the needs of our business community.

Right now, a key challenge is finding both skilled and unskilled workers. With unemployment at an all-time low of 2.8%, we’re all fishing in a pretty small talent pool. Issues such as housing continue to add yet another level of complication to the situation.

Through the Growing Workforce Participation fund (funded by the Queensland Government), we have conducted numerous workshops and seminars focused on diversifying our workforce. Our recent session on Intercultural Engagement in the Workplace was a hit, offering deep insights into how we can better connect with colleagues enabling businesses to build a strong, diverse and inclusive workforce and better understand their customers.

The seminar on Bridging the Generation Gap was fascinating and opened everyone’s eyes as we delved into the five distinct generations that make up both our workforce and customer base. The focus was on how employers can transform their teams by adapting their leadership, communication, and engagement strategies to better connect with each generation. Local small business panellists shared valuable insights, offering real-life examples of the challenges they’ve faced and the successes they’ve achieved along the way.

As the host of the Cairns Regional Jobs Committee (RJC) which is funded and supported by the Queensland Government, we’re proud to have partnered with government on initiatives like the Meeting of the Minds, Careers Advisors Forum, and Parents & Pathways Seminar. These events help align education pathways with industry needs, giving both students and

career changers a clearer direction.

Health Care and Social Services continues to be our region’s largest employer, and we are focused on showcasing the diverse career opportunities across this sector to school students and those considering a career change, through an industry immersion day. Following the success of our Maritime and Marine Careers Expo and Aviation Open Day, we’re excited to announce the #GOHealth Careers Expo in March 2025. If you’re interested in sponsorship, exhibiting or attending as a school, get in touch with us at rjc@ cairnschamber.com.au to learn more.

The Federal Government is currently reviewing Australia’s migration policy. To ensure our local businesses are heard, we collaborated with the Department of Home Affairs to host a forum where industry sectors such as Agriculture, Hospitality, and Aged Care, shared their thoughts on how this policy can better address regional workforce gaps. This was also an excellent platform for our business community to table the need for the Federal Government to address the complexities and costs involved when utilising the migration system to attract an overseas worker.

In early September, the Cairns RJC teamed up with industry workforce and industry skills advisors from ACS to co-host a roundtable focused on the future of the workforce in the ICT, finance and business sectors. The event brought together local businesses and industry stakeholders who shared their insights, challenges, and big ideas on workforce development and vocational training. The discussions covered everything from emerging trends and the evolving skills landscape to how training programs need to adapt to keep pace with future demands.

In collaboration with Cairns Aviation Skills Centre and APN, we graduated 19 individuals in an Australian first Customer

Service Excellence course delivered by Aviation Australia. The skills learned although delivered by a first-class aviation trainer are transferrable across all industry sectors. Should you have current vacancies especially in the lead-up to Christmas, these 19 candidates are ‘work ready’. To access their resumes please contact John Carlyle from APM Cairns.

Our CEO Patricia O’Neill and President Enver Selita recently returned from Parliament House in Canberra as part of the TNQ Delegation where along with Advance Cairns and Tourism Tropical North Queensland, they met with both Government and opposition to advocate for the key priorities for our region. The meetings were very positive and we look forward to hopefully sharing some successful outcomes in the next few weeks. The delegation certainly had a significant presence in the corridors of power as many strangers stopped and stared at the impact of the sight of the orange scarves and ties donned by the 30+ individuals. We certainly had impact. We were very clear in collaboration with Cairns Regional Council with delivering the messaging around the much-needed funding to complete the Cairns Water Security project. This is our region’s number one priority from the Federal Government to ensure it lessens the burden on rate payers.

As we now look at the city gearing up for the Christmas festivities, the team at the Cairns Chamber will be welcoming a well-earned rest. We have delivered some significant training via our workshop webinars and topped the year off celebrating our Business Community at the Business Excellence Awards where we had over 400 guests enjoy the annual night of nights.

We take this opportunity to thank you for your support of Cairns Chamber of Commerce and wish you all a fantastic Christmas with your families and a prosperous 2025.

Cairns Young Chamber: Wrapping Up a Vibrant 2024

Chair, Cairns Young Chamber : (07) 4031 1838 : yc@cairnschamber.com.au

As 2024 draws to a close, I can’t help but reflect on what an incredible year it’s been for the Cairns Young Chamber.

From networking nights and inspiring panels to innovative new events like Mindful Mornings, we’ve celebrated growth, connection, and opportunity in ways that truly showcase the strength of the young professional community in Cairns.

Here’s a look back at some of our brightest moments and an invitation to join in on the fun in 2025.

A year of firsts and fresh energy

This year kicked off with big changes as I stepped into the role of Chair, following in the footsteps of Ben Cole, whose leadership built a strong foundation for CYC’s continued growth. Alongside our dynamic committee — including new members like Jessica Hampton, Rebecca Shield, Kaytlin Campbell and Georgia McRoberts — we set out to elevate the overall experience for our members.

A standout initiative this year was our launch of Mindful Mornings. This fresh concept combines wellness and professional development, with the first event — a yoga and coffee morning at the Novotel — proving an instant hit. Led by Claudia Richardson from Kynd Studios and generously sponsored by ADhesive Communication, attendees stretched, caffeinated, and networked their way into a brighter day.

Celebrating connection and community

Throughout the year, we’ve hosted events that encouraged meaningful networking, sparked new ideas, and celebrated our vibrant community:

• Chat and Cheers networking nights: From our speed networking at Crystalbrook Flynn to collaborating with the Queensland Law Society at Salthouse, we held a bunch of mixers throughout the year that brought together a cross-section of Cairns’ brightest minds.

• Thought-provoking panels: We explored everything from homeownership, health and wellbeing and entrepreneurship with local leaders like Samuel Kennis, Cassy Perin and David Dall’Alba.

• Young Leaders Breakfast: Partnering with Ergon Energy and the Business Liaison Association, we inspired the next generation by connecting high school students with young professionals during a morning of shared stories and practical advice.

These events showcased the unique value of CYC: creating spaces where young leaders can grow, connect and thrive.

Celebrating the year

To cap off the year, we hosted our most prize-packed event yet on November 15, thanks to the generosity of incredible local businesses like MacDonnell’s Law, ELA, Crystalbrook Flynn, Cairns

Adventure Group, Wolf Lane Distillery, ADhesive and Vitality Pharmacy. With games, laughter and a spirit of celebration, it was a night to remember and the perfect way to reflect on a year of growth.

Looking ahead

As we gear up for 2025, our mission remains clear: to empower young professionals and create opportunities for leadership, connection and development in the Cairns region.

If you’re a business owner, why not consider sponsoring your aspiring leaders through events, sponsorships or memberships.

At just $50 for professionals and $25 for university students, a CYC membership is an investment in both individual growth and our region’s next generation of leaders.

To the young professionals of Cairns: If you’ve been considering joining us, there’s no better time. Together, we’re building something extraordinary.

On behalf of the entire CYC committee, thank you for being part of our journey this year.

Until next time,

ROSIE MITCHENER

Regional Development Australia Tropical North (RDA) : (07) 4041 1729 : info@rdatropicalnorth.org.au

Theupgrade of major roads throughout Far North Queensland, feasibility studies to address regional gaps, and economic development strategies are among the many millions of dollars of projects championed by Regional Development Australia (RDA) Tropical North over the past 15 years.

RDA Tropical North is celebrating our 15th anniversary this year and marked the occasion with Senator Nita Green opening a function for past Board members and stakeholders on October 22 reflecting on the multiple milestones and successes achieved.

Our independent organisation has a proud history of brokering regional development solutions to create jobs and grow the Far North Queensland economy as a backbone organisation for the region.

Over the past 15 years RDA Tropical North has been driven by community leaders volunteering their time to collaborate with communities and work across all levels of government to advocate for funding for projects and feasibility

studies that steer our region towards a prosperous and well-planned future.

During that time the RDA Tropical North Board positions have been held by 43 community leaders with Deputy Chair Cr Brett Moller celebrating the significant milestone of 15 years volunteering for RDA.

We recognised Cr Moller’s service with an award at our celebration evening and presented recognition awards to Bill Shannon for 10 years of service and Dr Allan Dale for eight years of service including serving as the second Chair of the organisation.

Many of the significant projects have assisted with developing and improving key road infrastructure throughout the region, including part of the team that brokered the 10-year $8.5 billion commitment to enhance the Bruce Highway’s safety, efficiency and capacity and advocating for the $276 million Stage 1 Cape York Region Package, the most significant infrastructure investment in that region since Federation.

Water security is another key area that we have championed, most recently with the completion of the Detailed Business Case for the Lakeland Irrigation Area Scheme and taking the lead in 2020 to deliver the inaugural RDA Tropical North Regional Water Summit to develop a joint advocacy vision.

This year we tackled the housing crisis with the Tropical North Queensland Housing Summit which we organised with the Torres Cape Indigenous Councils Alliance (TCICA) and FNQ Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQROC) to bring together more than 100 housing and accommodation stakeholders to discuss the steps forward.

It is fitting that in our 15th year we released a five-year strategic plan for the region, the Tropical North Queensland Economic Development Strategy 20242029, developed in collaboration with FNQROC to create a dynamic economy, build resilience and increase liveability.

RDA Tropical North looks forward to the next 15 years as we engage not just in our backyard, but across Northern Australia and the Indo-Pacific region to seek effective strategies for the Tropical North to thrive economically, socially, environmentally and culturally.

Advocating for Far North Queensland: Canberra Delegation Delivers Impact

Chief Executive Officer

Advance Cairns

As the dust settles on the State election and the Crisafulli Government embarks on its 100day campaign, Advance Cairns has shifted our focus to the Federal stage. We recently joined forces with the Cairns Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) to lead a delegation of more than 25 business and regional leaders to Canberra.

Representing Far North Queensland’s diverse interests, the delegation, spearheaded by our Chair Nick Trompf and CEO Jacinta Reddan, included Cairns Regional Council Mayor Amy Eden and regional representatives. Together, we engaged in over 30 meetings with senior leaders from the Australian Government, Opposition, and crossbench, amplifying the unified voice of our region.

The delegation brought together a cross-sector of industry from aviation leaders advocating for the sustainable fuel sector, through to education and health stakeholders championing expanded medical programs and tourism opportunities in Cairns — each voice added depth to our collective priorities.

For members, participating in the

delegation offered an invaluable opportunity to influence decision-making at the highest levels of government. This was a powerful opportunity to make an impact as we head into the Federal election next year.

The discussions focused on critical areas for our community: water security, health, infrastructure, regional connectivity, tourism growth, and defence. Highlights included attending the Minister for Northern Australia’s annual statement to Parliament, where the delegation was referenced from the floor. The Speaker of the House also acknowledged the delegation during Question Time, with several parliamentarians showing their support by wearing TNQ-branded scarves and ties. Additionally, we participated in the Regional Australia Institute’s progress report on regional ambition, further emphasising the importance of advancing regional priorities on the national stage.

Key advocacy included securing additional funding for Cairns’ water future, investments in aviation and tourism infrastructure, and expanding healthcare and education offerings. We also championed climate resilience strategies, workforce solutions, and defence initiatives to position Cairns as a

hub for Northern Australia.

The 2023 floods following Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper served as a stark reminder of our region’s vulnerability to natural disasters. Many communities are still recovering. This delegation provided a platform to urge the Federal Government to accelerate investments in climateresilient infrastructure and disaster planning, emphasising the need for a new national digital asset base and landuse planning to mitigate risks and a close examination of the effectiveness of the reinsurance pool.

For Advance Cairns members, the delegation reaffirmed the value of being part of an organisation that not only advocates for the region but ensures stakeholders are at the decision-making table. The influence and ability to reach key leaders would not have been possible without the ability to collaborate and I want to thank Cairns Chamber of Commerce CEO Patricia O’Neill and TTNQ’s Mark Olsen whose columns you also read elsewhere in this issue.

Here's wishing you all a safe and peaceful Christmas and we look forward to an action-packed 2025.

Key Steps for Buying or Selling a Business

CHLOE MOES

Senior Associate Commercial & Property Law Team (working with Director Michael Huelin) WGC Lawyers : (07) 4046 1178 : cairns@wgc.com.au

Buying or selling a business is a significant decision that requires careful planning, strategic thinking, and expert guidance. Understanding the key steps in the process is essential and with the right guidance and expertise, you can navigate the process with confidence.

FOR THE BUSINESS OWNER READY TO SELL

If you are looking to sell your business, the first step is determining its value and ascertaining your sale price. You should sit down with your accountant to review the financials as most businesses are sold based on profit or turnover. As well as ensuring the accuracy of your financials, your accountant may also be able to provide advice about the value of your business in consultation with your selling agent or business broker who will have knowledge of the current market.

Next, you should consider what the structure of the sale will be. Will you sell the business assets, or transfer shares or units in your company or unit trust if your business is structured through either of these entities? It’s important that you discuss the structure of the sale with your accountant, so you understand the tax implications of each option. The sale of shares in a company will generally not incur stamp duty which can be an attraction for a potential buyer.

Once the structure of the deal is decided, it’s time to consult with your commercial lawyer to prepare the sale agreement and guide you through negotiations with the buyer. Once negotiations are complete and the agreement is signed your commercial lawyer will take care of the finer details, from preparing the necessary documentation to transfer the business assets to determining the employee leave entitlement adjustments and conducting the final settlement.

FOR THE ASPIRING BUSINESS BUYER

Buying an established business can be a smart move, provided you’ve done your homework. First, be sure to engage the help of an accountant and a commercial lawyer. It is crucial that you obtain advice about your

proposed purchasing entity to ensure the right structure is used or established for you, and you understand the tax benefits or limitations. It is standard practice that the seller’s lawyer prepares the sale agreement. Therefore, it is essential that you have your own lawyer review the terms to ensure that all your required conditions are included, and the agreement reflects the deal you negotiated.

Much like buying a property, buying a business follows a similar process and it is quite common for business sale agreements to include a period after the agreement is signed to obtain satisfactory finance to fund the purchase and conduct your due diligence enquiries. Due diligence is a critical phase where you will thoroughly review the business financials, customer base, and assets. Your accountant and lawyer will both play a role in assessing the due diligence findings, to ensure that you are well informed prior to satisfying the condition and proceeding with the purchase of the business.

Once all conditions are met and you are satisfied with the results of your due diligence enquiries, it’s time to finalise the deal. Your lawyer will ensure that all steps are taken to transfer the business assets free of any encumbrances at settlement and will deal with all necessary settlement adjustments, including the adjustment of employee entitlements. Once settlement is complete, you will then be the proud owner of your new business.

If you’re planning to buy or sell a business, we strongly recommend consulting the experienced team at WGC Lawyers to guide you through the process.

Wishing everyone a happy and safe festive season, and all the best for 2025!

Face Treatments For Everybody

: senseofbeauty.com.au

Visit our DMK beauty salon in Cairns and let us pamper you with exceptional service, top-quality products, and warm hospitality. Trust us to make you feel good, look great, and embrace your confidence.

There are so many facial treatments on the market these days, sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. At Sense of Beauty we only use DMK products due to their globally proven results over many many years. These are just some types of facial treatments available at specialist DMK clinics across the world. There is a treatment to suit all skin types and conditions.

FACE TREATMENTS FOR EVERYBODY

Enzyme Therapy – Restores skin to its peak condition

DMK is the only company in the world to utilise the beneficial effects of transfer-messenger enzymes. Enzymes are living substances that regulate health and work with certain minerals in the body to form a natural system of antioxidants that fight corrosive free radicals. Properly formulated, they can remove dead protein, toxins, and other effluvia from the epidermis using a process called ‘reverse osmosis.’

DMK Enzyme Treatments work with the skin. The enzymes aim to strengthen the structural integrity of the skin to create a healthy environment for cells to live and thrive.

A-Lift® (Aesthetic Lift) – Skin fitness program

DMK A-Lift® is a 12-week program designed to revise the signs of ageing and the health of your skin. By removing redundant skin cells and tightening facial muscles, the DMK A-Lift® Treatment works by stimulating the underlying structures of the skin. It gives the face its workout, similar to how you would tone and tighten the body with exercise, restoring a healthy youthful appearance.

Bihaku – For a luminous complexion

DMK Bihaku Skin Brightening

Treatment is a professional program designed to help regain a brighter, more even, and radiant complexion.

Eye Fusion – A real eye opener

Whether you suffer from wrinkles, fine lines, puffiness and dark circles or merely dull skin around the eyes, the DMK Eye Fusion Treatment will revitalise your appearance.

Hydradermaze – Clear the way for acne free skin

Hydradermaze is an advanced treatment program designed to help clear acne and congestion.

Instant Lift – Instant ‘pick me up’ for skin

A firm, tighten and brighten skin instantly with the DMK special occasion treatment. The perfect accessory for a wedding or party!

Liquid Laser – A non-invasive treatment of wrinkles or fragile skin

Liquid Laser is a light, non-invasive treatment that focuses on strengthening, firming, and rebuilding the skin. Great for fine lines, superficial wrinkles, fragile, weak or dehydrated skin.

MelanoZone – Sophisticated revision of uneven skin tone

It evens out your skin tone and colour, in addition, to restore a healthy, natural glow. The MelanoZone Treatment helps to suppress and inhibit further melanin production. It is compatible with all skin conditions and tones and can be used on any area of the face or body.

Muscle Banding – Age management

Muscle Banding is about acting in advance to prevent the onset of ageing. The DMK Muscle Banding Program not only lifts and firms the skin; it can

also help to restore optimal skin function, which is the key to healthy, firm skin.

Pro Alpha Six-layer Peel – A resurfacing procedure for those wanting dramatic results

Pro Alpha Six-layer Peel is an integrative aesthetic approach to skin restoration. This professionally applied treatment revises the damaged skin and works to re-establish structural integrity. The Pro Alpha Six-layer Peel is an exclusive blend of AHAs and BHAs, used systematically in layers. The strength of the formulation is tailored by your therapist to suit your skin colour, texture, sensitivity, and condition. The procedure takes seven days. Recommended for uneven textured skin, wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation, sun-damage, and scarring.

Pro Peel – Energise your skin

Revitalise thickened, rough, sundamaged, sluggish or congested surfaces with this 6-8 week progressive resurfacing and rebuilding procedure.

RP (Remodelling Procedure)

RP is based on the rebuilding of healthy and attractive skin on both the body and face. RP revises the skin by focusing on the underlying cause of sun-damage, premature ageing, loose sagging, and wrinkled skin.

Studios Embrace ‘Kynd’ Philosophy

Kynd Studios founder and head teacher Claudia Richardson proudly embraces the ‘Kynd’ philosophy at her Edge Hill studio.

Due to the resounding success of her current studio, she is thrilled to announce the opening of a new studio in Stratford in January.

“Our original flagship studio in Edge Hill is a cherished local hub where we’ve built strong community ties,” Claudia said.

“It features a welcoming, intimate space designed to feel like a second home where clients can focus on personal growth and wellbeing.

“We’re thrilled to be opening our second studio in Stratford this January. The new space will allow us to welcome more members into our Kynd community and offer more classes, more variety, to create more impact and to continue to give back to our Kynd community and to the local community even more!

“The decision to open another studio was driven by the growing demand for our unique approach to movement and wellbeing, as well as our desire to reach and support more people in our community.

“The new Stratford studio will mirror the warm and welcoming atmosphere of our original studio but with more space and elevated facilities to enhance our clients’ experiences.

“It will be an elevated movement and community experience like nothing else Cairns has seen.”

Claudia discovered her love of yoga and pilates at a young age.

“I discovered my passion for movement-based disciplines early in life and have dedicated myself to exploring the transformative power of yoga and pilates,” she said.

“I’ve spent over a decade honing my craft, gaining experience working for and with leading wellness companies in Australia and I established Kynd Studios to share my passion and help others achieve the incredible mind, body and spirit transformation that I have thanks to these practices.”

Claudia has been teaching yoga, pilates and barre in Cairns since 2015.

Kynd Studios opened as its own purposebuilt boutique yoga and pilates studio in the heart of Edge Hill in 2021.

The studio offers a blend of Yoga and Pilates classes, along with barre, yin, breathwork and meditation sessions.

“Our classes are designed to cater to a wide range of needs, focusing on both physical fitness and mental wellbeing,” Claudia said.

“We offer a complete mind, body and spirit transformation. We offer life-changing practices that create an impact in every area of your life.

“We have a dedicated team of the most experienced yoga and pilates teachers in Cairns, creating tailored classes to our community seven days a week.

“We aim to provide a holistic experience that supports both the body and mind.”

Claudia said Kynd Studios’ classes offer a wide range of benefits, including improved strength, increased flexibility, reduced stress levels and increased energy and vitality.

They also offer increased productivity, balance, a greater sense of purpose, confidence, strength, flexibility, adaptability and a like-minded community, encouraging you to live your best life.

Kynd Studios are inclusive and welcome everyone, with clients ranging from 16-70 years of age.

Claudia has a special interest in pregnancy and postpartum support and is also a postpartum doula. She also runs ‘mums and bubs’ classes, which are taking a short break until the Stratford studio opens.

“These classes are specially designed to help new mothers regain strength and flexibility while bonding with their babies in a nurturing and supportive environment,” Claudia said.

“What makes our Kynd mums and bubs classes unique is that they are carrier-friendly! I found after having my son that there was no way he would let me put him down to do pilates so I decided that barre was a perfect fit for an upright workout.”

Claudia wanted to create something that encompassed everything she stood for –kindness.

In 2020, she studied Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, with one sutra standing out to her – one of kindness, compassion, joy and acceptance. She decided to spread this sutra’s message.

If you would like to embrace Claudia’s ‘Kyndness’ message, she has some advice for you: “Come along, you have nothing to lose and incredible lifechanging experience to gain.”

CAIRNS DISTRICT CRIME PREVENTION UNIT

Mobility Device Rules and Property Security

SERGEANT CARY COOLICAN

Cairns Police Crime Prevention

Co-ordinator

If you are checking off the Christmas wish list for the family, please ensure you take time to do your research when considering electric scooters, skateboards, or bicycles for gifts this year.

Choosing the right product for your child is important as there are strict rules around personal mobility devices (PMD).

It’s important to note that to ride a personal mobility device, you must either be at least 16 years old or at least 12 years and supervised by an adult while riding the device. Note, children under 12 years must not ride personal mobility devices.

It’s important to note, electronic scooters, skateboards or bikes are limited to footpaths, shared paths, bike paths and local streets, or on road bike lanes where the road limit is 50km/hr or less.

Key rules to follow:

· Always wear an approved helmet that is securely fitted and fastened.

· Know where you can ride.

· Speed limit of 12km/hr on footpaths and shared paths unless otherwise signed.

· Maximum speed limit of 25km/hr on bike paths and roads.

· PMD riders must be 12-years-old or more.

· 12 to 15-year-olds MUST be supervised.

· No doubling. Passengers are not allowed.

· Warn pedestrians as you approach. Devices with handlebars must have a bell.

· Use lights and reflectors after dark.

· Park your PMD in a safe space out of the way of other path users.

· Leave your phone alone when riding and do not carry it in your hand.

· General road rules apply.

· Don’t drink and ride.

Parents also need to be aware that crashes can happen anywhere including footpaths, bike paths, shared paths, car parks and roadways. There is an obligation for those involved to stop, remain at the scene, and give assistance to those that are injured. This includes mobility devices such as e-scooters and bicycles.

E-scooters and e-bikes are designed for use by one person only so carrying another person, even a child, when riding a personal mobility device, is an offence. Please stay safe! For more information about e-scooters and rules, go to: Qld Streetsmarts: https://streetsmarts. initiatives.qld.gov.au/initiatives/pmd-rules/

When riding on roads and paths, you must ride with due care and attention. This includes being considerate of other riders, drivers and pedestrians around you. All riders, including

children, should be familiar with basic road rules.

Marking your property makes ownership clear and will often deter theft as marked property is more difficult for a thief to offload. Clearly marked property helps police identify property and return it to the rightful owner.

Because e-scooters are usually small in size and weight, it can make them an easy target for offenders to physically pick up and carry or ride away. Thieves may use cutting implements to remove locking devices, so it’s important that owners record serial numbers, photograph their ride, and are proactive about storing and securing their property.

Consider installing a small GPS or tracking system, to help locate valuable items that could be lost or stolen. Engrave, microdot, mark, and photograph valuables such as jewellery.

Personal safety and property security are our priority so please keep a record of your valuables, along with serial numbers, photos and identifying markers. For more information and a property identification fact sheet, head to our website: https:// www.police.qld.gov.au/safety-andpreventing-crime/property-identificationand-recording/property-identification

Hollywood star Adrian Grenier has arrived in Far North Queensland for his latest project, You, Always supported by Screen Queensland.

While principal photography will largely be on location in tropical Far North Queensland, production will also take place at Screen Queensland Studios, Cairns utilising the facility’s stateof-the-art sound stage and production offices.

Produced by Brisbane-based Jaggi Entertainment You, Always is a heartfelt romantic comedy starring Adrian Grenier as Ethan (Entourage, The Devil Wears Prada) and Jessica De Gouw as Dr Jen Bell (The Union, The Portable Door). The film follows Ethan, a devoted best friend who finally realises he’s been in love with Jen all along — just as her world is turned upside down by the arrival of a charismatic author Patrick, played by Desmond Chiam (Joy Ride, Mortal Kombat 2). Also joining the cast is comedian Yasmin Kassim (One Perfect Match), Spencer McLaren (The Secret Life of Us, Fake) and Cairns newcomer Adyn Kingi.

Minister for Education and the Arts, John-Paul Langbroek said the Queensland Government was proud to support the production of You, Always which is expected to generate approximately $3.5 million for Queensland and create 100 new jobs.

“Queensland is the best place in the world to live and the wonderful beauty of tropical Far North Queensland will be showcased to the world through You, Always,” Minister Langbroek said.

“This is the sixth movie Jaggi Entertainment has filmed in Far North Queensland and we know each time the camera rolls it provides a welcome boost to our economy and supports local jobs for Queenslanders.

“This is a 100 per cent Queensland-made production and our government is proud to continue supporting our talented film industry professionals.”

Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney said that the project is supported by the agency’s Screen Finance Fund and Post, Digital and Visual Effects (PDV) Incentive and marks the first project to receive funding from the new North Queensland Production Incentive.

“This incentive will help drive more film and series production in the North Queensland region, securing employment and training opportunities for local screen practitioners while increasing regional economic expenditure and stimulating wider business and tourism benefits for regional communities.

“You, Always joins a strong slate of films brought to North Queensland by Jaggi Entertainment, including Netflix smash Love is in the Air, which highlights the appetite Australian and international audiences have for seeing our northern tropics on screen and the opportunity that exists for the screen industry to continue to capitalise on this demand through increased local production.”

Jaggi Entertainment producer Kylie Pascoe said that the opening of Screen Queensland Studios, Cairns earlier this year enhances the extraordinary experience of filming in Far North Queensland, complementing the company’s established passion for creating Jaggi Entertainment films in the region.

“We couldn’t have done it without the invaluable support of Screen Queensland. Their commitment to fostering local talent and businesses for productions has been instrumental in making this film a reality.

“Filming in Far North Queensland has allowed us to capture the stunning natural beauty of what Queensland has to offer, it’s truly a privilege to create this story in such a unique and inspiring location.”

Steve Jaggi, producer on the film, said he is thrilled to bring You, Always to life here in Cairns.

“The region’s breathtaking landscapes and vibrant community have been the perfect setting for this production which we will be presenting on a world stage. The support we’ve received from locals has already been amazing and it’s exciting to see this story come together in such a remarkable part of Queensland.

“Being able to show Adrian Grenier what Queensland has to offer is also something Jaggi Entertainment is immensely proud of.”

Adrian Grenier said that filming You, Always in Cairns is an absolute dream.

“The natural beauty of Far North Queensland provides such a stunning backdrop for this story, and the warmth of the local community and the Jaggi Entertainment family has been incredible.

It’s exciting to bring this project to life in such a special place, and I can’t wait for audiences to see it. Wrapping just before the holidays makes it feel even more magical — it’s the perfect way to end the year.”

You, Always is written by Ansley Gordon and directed by Christine Luby, with producers Steve Jaggi and Kylie Pascoe leading the project. Jaggi Entertainment is one of seven recipients of Screen Queensland’s $3 million Business Enterprise fund.

Airport Flying High for Festive Season

International passenger numbers at Cairns Airport are exceeding pre-pandemic levels, positioning 2025 as a bumper year with Cathay Pacific’s return just around the corner, the launch of a new domestic service this week and further historic airline arrivals in the pipeline.

In early December Jetstar operated its first ever direct flight from Cairns to the Sunshine Coast, connecting two of Queensland’s most sought-after destinations in a welcome development for regional travellers who frequented the popular route under Bonza. Cathay Pacific will commence its highly anticipated seasonal service on December 17, extending through to March 29. This will be followed by commencement of Cairns’ first direct fight to Christchurch with Jetstar on April 1, and Fiji Airways’ inaugural service from April 10.

It comes amid significant commercial developments at Cairns Airport, aimed at enhancing customers’ experience leading into the festive season and beyond. A series of new stores and services have opened in the domestic terminal, including:

• AMUSE Beauty Studio, offering a raft of globally recognised makeup, skincare and fragrance brands

• The Edit, a boutique experience featuring clothing, footwear and jewellery

• New Travelex store, expanding options for currency exchange and travel cards

Cairns Airport Chief Executive Officer Richard Barker said Cairns Airport was

ready for a busy holiday season, closing out a successful year with more milestones on the horizon.

“In 2024, we welcomed Singapore Airlines’ widebody A350 services and AirAsia Indonesia began flying to Cairns Airport for the first time. International passenger numbers are consistently tracking above 2019 levels, with more than 12,000 travellers passing through our international terminal on average each week,” he said.

“Cathay Pacific’s return in a couple of weeks will deliver almost 27,000 seats across the season, offering ideal connectivity for the thousands of visitors expected to celebrate Chinese New Year in Tropical North Queensland, and it is fantastic to have Jetstar operating a direct route from Cairns to the Sunshine Coast up to four times per week, ahead of the Christmas holidays.”

Mr Barker said additional team members would be deployed to assist with security screening processes at peak times during the holiday travel period.

“Over the three weeks leading into Christmas, we expect more than 270,000 passengers to travel through Cairns Airport,” he said.

“If you’re planning to leave your vehicle at Cairns Airport, we recommend that you consider pre-booking parking online. Our new stores will also help to take the stress out of pre-Christmas travel, with a variety of quality products and brands perfect for gifting.

“I would like to thank our community for their patience and understanding at this exciting

and busy time of year. Together with the team at Cairns Airport, we wish everyone a safe and enjoyable festive break.”

The Cairns Airport Making Christmas a Little Brighter campaign is in full swing.

Cairns Airport was named Major Airport of the Year 2024 at the Australian Airports Association (AAA) National Airport Industry Awards, and Airport of the Year at the Australian Aviation Awards, both for the second consecutive year. The award submissions highlighted the efforts of the Cairns Airport team to rapidly reopen the aerodrome in the wake of the unprecedented December 2023 flood, the worst recorded since 1910.

More information about Cairns Airport is available at cairnsairport.com.au

A BRIEF SNAPSHOT

• From Tuesday 3 December, Jetstar began operating up to four flights per week to the Sunshine Coast.

What was the highlight of 2024 for you in

My greatest highlight for 2024 was by far, witnessing the resilience and generosity of the community supporting those affected by Cyclone Jasper and the subsequent weather event. While the devastation was tragic and heartbreaking, our community banded together in a remarkable way and the heart-warming stories that emerged remind me how very special the Cairns region

Looking forward to 2025, what are your biggest goals?

My biggest goal for 2025 is to invest into upand-coming leaders within our community. I am within proximity of a cohort of remarkable human beings that are young and eager to serve and make their mark on our community. They inspire me to keep toiling away and through their eagerness to make a difference keep me accountable to do my bit.

Do you have any advice or messages for the Cairns community as we head into 2025?

I am not quick to give advice however, if anything, I would encourage people to look past the dollar value of things and make choices around what will benefit more people and generate opportunity for our collective future. Community and relationships are better when we look beyond the transaction to what might inspire or bring healing where there is struggle or pain.

surgical robot to our hospital. We also aim to expand our engagement with philanthropists and grow our support network further. Enhancing our volunteer programs and strengthening our social enterprises to keep things sustainable are big priorities, too. We want to keep pushing forward to ensure Far North Queensland has access to the best possible health care. Do you have any advice or messages for the Cairns community as we head into 2025?

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Foundation — your generosity has made an incredible difference. Your impact has been truly felt, from funding vital equipment to advancing research. We’ve come a long way, but we can still do so much more to ensure we have the best health care close to home. Everyone has a different capacity to give, and whether you volunteer, donate, hold an event, or participate in one, every effort makes a meaningful impact, is valued, and is deeply rewarding. Giving back doesn’t just help others; it brings a sense of fulfilment and connection. So, pick a cause close to your heart and get involved — you won’t regret it.

Highlight/biggest achievement- successfully and smoothly merging ClearSkincare Clinics into SILK Laser Clinics and being able to employ all team members in the acquisition to continue to service our beautiful FNQ clients.

Did you have any memorable projects or moments this year?

Creating a successful, well educated, motivated and determined team ready for clients to make a positive change in their confidence and appearance. Additionally, opening up FNQ’s first ever medical laser training course. Class4 Laser Training helps our students develop their skills without going down to Brisbane for training and for clients/models to support the education of the next generation of laser techs at a great affordable price.

What was the highlight of 2024 for you in Cairns?

I don’t know if I can call it a highlight necessarily, but one of the biggest challenges and some of the most rewarding work I’ve undertaken this year has been to do with Cyclone Jasper.

It’s been an enormous challenge for our community and there is still a massive amount of work that is ongoing but getting through the bulk of it with the community and helping a whole host of individuals with much of the work I did in relation to resolving insurance issues successfully and it has been extraordinarily rewarding.

I’ve got my fingers crossed that we have a very quiet cyclone season this year.

Did you have any memorable projects or moments this year?

In June of this year, I visited Alexandra Bay School in the Daintree. The students there are massive Lego fanatics, I thought it would be a good idea to bring a little bit of Lego cheer for the kids.

Between Jabalbina Aboriginal Corporation and myself we pooled together $700 worth of new Lego for the school, and I convinced Channel Nine’s Lego Masters program to get involved and contribute some set pieces and a special message

What was the highlight of 2024 for you in Cairns?

The highlight of 2024 was the incredible opportunity to deliver real results for the people of Cairns by being elected as Mayor. It’s a real privilege to drive initiatives that address our community’s most pressing challenges. Securing funding for the Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project was a significant milestone. It’s not just an investment in infrastructure; it’s a lifeline for families and businesses feeling the pinch of rising living costs. By ensuring a sustainable water supply, we’re setting Cairns up for future growth and affordability.

Did you have any memorable projects or moments this year?

Delivering on my 100-day plan was a standout moment. It wasn’t just about ticking off promises; it was about bringing a sense of urgency and accountability to Council. Perhaps the most memorable moments though are engaging directly with the community. Whether it was at local sporting events or discussing big-picture issues, hearing firsthand from residents reminded me why I stepped up to this role - to make a difference.

People take for granted the talent, qualifications and diversity we have in Cairns. (I know I did). We have some well-educated professionals steering the ship with FNQ being at the forefront of their mind. Trust that these people are out making a difference, and they need help. Looking forward to 2025, what are your biggest goals?

I’m looking forward to preparing for my transition to retirement from politics, and finally handing the baton on to the next Member for Leichhardt and ensuring there is a seamless transition and that the good work that I’ve started on behalf of our community can continue under the leadership of the next Federal Member for Leichhardt.

Do you have any advice or messages for the Cairns community as we head into 2025?

I’m not typically one to give broad sweeping advice to the community per se, the way I look at it is that I’m here to listen and act on the needs of our community and it’s a practice I’ve been doing for many years now.

I’d just say to everyone, really take time to slow down this holiday season, it’s been a rough year for many people and I hope the community takes the time to care for one another, be kind to each other and celebrate the fact that we’ve overcome quite a great deal of trials and tribulations.

Development Area process is a major focus. It’s not just about building homes; it’s about creating a thriving community with jobs, schools, and green spaces. It’s time to face the housing crisis head-on and ensure families have an affordable, quality range of options.

I’ll also continue pushing to secure the final piece of funding for our water infrastructure from the Federal Government. With cost-of-living pressures hitting households hard, we need to make sure essential services remain affordable and sustainable for generations to come.

Do you have any advice or messages for the Cairns community as we head into 2025?

Cairns is an incredible place, not just because of its natural beauty but because of the spirit of its people. As we move into 2025, my message is simple: Stay engaged and stay hopeful. Big challenges like crime, housing and the cost of living can feel overwhelming, but by working together, we’re making progress.

Be proud of how far we’ve come and know that your voice matters. Whether it’s providing feedback or joining community initiatives, your input is shaping Cairns for the better. Let’s make 2025 the year we face challenges with courage and achieve even more.

Starting and completing our home renovations. It was stressful at times, but so rewarding. Also, being on the commentary team for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Taupo, New Zealand. What an honour!

Did you have any memorable projects or moments this year?

Some of the best memories I’ve collected this year would have to be the holidays I got to experience. A solo trip to Bali for a little RnR, a big family trip to Queenstown, NZ to celebrate my dad’s birthday and a recent trip to Melbourne rocking

I think it’s time for more physical goals. Maybe another crack at the Great Pyramid race or lace up my Hokas for another Half Marathon. Do you have any advice or messages for the Cairns community as we head into 2025?

I hope the holiday season gives people the chance to slow down and take some time to recharge and energise. Life post-Covid has become so busy and I think we all forget that it’s OK to say stay home and have down time.

What was the highlight of 2024 for you in Cairns?

Without a doubt, the highlight of 2024 was winning Queensland Hairdresser of the Year. It was such an incredible moment for me personally and professionally. This award isn’t just about recognition — it reflects the passion, creativity, and dedication I bring to my craft every day. It also honours the amazing team I have at Tokunai Hair, as their support and shared vision push me to achieve more. It was truly a career-defining moment and a celebration of everything I love about this industry.

Did you have any memorable projects or moments this year?

Absolutely! Being finalists in the Queensland Salon Team of the Year at the Australian Hairdressing Industry Awards was a standout moment for us — it was such an honour to have our team’s hard work and creativity recognised on such a big stage. Another highlight was our incredible team training retreat to Bali, which we called Hairvana. It was a perfect blend of education, inspiration, and bonding. Sharing that experience with my team in such a beautiful setting was unforgettable, and it really brought us closer while re-energising our passion for what we do.

Looking forward to 2025, what are your biggest goals?

For 2025, my focus is on growth, both personally

and for Tokunai Hair. One of my biggest goals is to continue pushing the creative boundaries and entering more industry awards, showcasing the incredible work my team and I produce. I’m also passionate about expanding our training programs — both in-salon and externally — to inspire the next generation of stylists. Another key goal is enhancing the client experience at Tokunai Hair, building on our reputation for transformative colour and styling. Lastly, I’d love to host another team retreat, taking Hairvana to the next level, because those moments of connection and inspiration fuel everything we do. 2025 is all about elevating our craft, team, and the experiences we deliver. Do you have any advice or messages for the Cairns community as we head into 2025?

To the Cairns community, I want to say thank you for your ongoing support and love — it’s because of you that businesses like mine can thrive. As we step into 2025, I encourage everyone to invest in themselves, whether that’s through self-care, personal growth, or simply taking time to enjoy the little things. For those looking for a fresh start or a boost of confidence, don’t be afraid to try something new — whether it’s with your hair or in life. Let’s continue to uplift and support each other, building a stronger, more connected community. I’m so excited to see what we can all achieve together in the new year!

What was the highlight of 2024 for you in Cairns?

The biggest highlight was the launch of our new children’s book, My Mate Jed, explaining stroke to children. It was presented to an enthusiastic audience at Into the Blue, our event to celebrate World Moyamoya Day on May 6, 2024. This book was co-written with Crystal Leonardi, and is the third in her series, including My Brother Sebastian, and My Friend Alice. Did you have any memorable projects or moments this year?

The most memorable for me was the ability to gift nearly $50,000 to Macquarie University Neurosciences, who have committed to collating a database of genetics testing for Moyamoya patients. We have to date gifted $107,500 for the research, training and support for this rare

disease, we want to know why we have this disease, not just locally, but nationally as well. Looking forward to 2025, what are your biggest goals?

In May 2025, we are bringing the Smokey Blue Rally to Cairns! This is an interactive Treasure Hunt, it’s fun for all ages and all capabilities, and is lots of fun! What was the highlight of 2024 for you in Cairns?

2024 began with significant challenges as Cairns and the surrounding communities faced the worst flooding in a century. Remarkably, there was no loss of life in Cairns. I could not mention the floods without mentioning our neighbouring communities however such as Degarra and Bloomfield in the Douglas Shire, which did in fact lose a life of a long-term resident through the catastrophic event. The way our communities banded together is a testament to our community’s preparedness and solidarity. Despite these hardships, the resilience of our community shone brightly. This “nevergive-up” spirit inspired the Cairns Chamber of Commerce to introduce a “Resilience Award” at the 2024 Business Excellence Awards. This award recognised a business that demonstrated strong leadership, tenacity, and a solutionsfocused vision in the face of adversity.

Did you have any memorable projects or moments this year?

The Emerging Leaders program continues to be a standout project for me. This program educates the next generation of regional leaders on the opportunities and challenges facing Far North Queensland. It serves as a succession plan for our region, ensuring that the right skills, knowledge, and expertise are retained and developed locally. These emerging leaders have shown tremendous growth over the past 10 months, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have on our community.

Another memorable initiative was the Customer Service Course, which the Cairns Chamber of Commerce partnered with APM Employment Services and Cairns Aviation Skills Centre to launch. This course saw 19 individuals complete an Australian-first specialised customer service training program, equipping them with the skills and confidence to succeed in the workforce while

addressing critical skill and labour shortages. Delivered by Aviation Australia, this course, typically offered to cabin crew, was modified to meet the rising demand for customer service skills across all industries. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s rewarding to see the tangible benefits of these educational programs. Looking forward to 2025, what are your biggest goals?

As we move into 2025, our focus will be on leveraging the opportunities presented by the upcoming Federal Election. This period is crucial for fast-tracking some of our key regional priorities. One of the most important projects is the Cairns Water Security Project, essential for the sustainable growth of our region. Additionally, we are advocating for the expansion of the CQUniversity campus to include laboratories that will support the study of allied health. This expansion is vital for addressing the tight labour market in our healthcare sector and providing more opportunities for local students to pursue careers in this critical industry. It goes without saying, that we are so looking forward to another successful year of listening, informing and advocating on behalf of our business community as well as connecting them to opportunities to assist them in prospering in 2025.

Do you have any advice or messages for the Cairns community as we head into 2025?

To our business community, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support of the Cairns Chamber of Commerce. Your dedication and collaboration are what makes our work possible. As we head into 2025, I encourage everyone to continue supporting local suppliers and businesses. Let’s stay safe and hopeful for a drier wet season. Together, we can overcome any challenges that come our way. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Our Awards program goes from strength to strength each year. We have no shortage of talented business women in Cairns and we are immensely pleased to shine a light on them.

I’m a big advocate in supporting local small businesses. They are the back bone of our community and play an important role in our local economy.
