The epitome of a tropical paradise

Locals have always known that Palm Cove is a sensational beach, and thanks to a recent global award the rest of the world now knows too.

The idyllic beach was named the 2024 best beach in the world by the editors and readers of Conde Nest Traveller magazine, beating out 33 other beaches including stunning locations in Greece, Fiji and Hawaii as well as five other Australian beaches.

“Palm Cove is a deserving winner of the accolade as best beach in the world,” said Tourism Minister and State Member for Cairns Michael Healy.

“It is an idyllic setting, with pristine white sands, avenues of coconut palms, ancient paperbark trees, framed by the World Heritage-listed rainforest and the Coral Sea. But it is also the world-class restaurants, cafes, resorts, shops and the friendly laid-back vibe of Palm Cove that makes it so unique.”

State Member for Barron River Craig Crawford says this award is great news for tourism throughout the region.

“Locals have always known how spectacular Palm Cove is, and they should be very proud to have this beach officially recognised as the best in the world,” he said. “This announcement will help drive even more awareness and put a spotlight on Tropical Far North Queensland.

“This is great news for tourism at Palm Cove. We already attract a high number of visitations from cold Victorians wanting to escape their winter. I’ve spoken to a lot of very excited tour operators and small businesses about how this award will boost tourism and help create jobs for locals.”

There is just so much to love about Palm Cove. The gorgeous beach is picturepostcard perfect thanks to its uncrowded and long stretch of golden sandy beach, palm-fringed shore and the sparkling blue Coral Sea. It’s here where you can easily spend hours relaxing, breathing in the fresh sea air, picnicking, swimming, fishing off the jetty and enjoying the water sports on offer. People of all ages love spending time here soaking up the sun or keeping cool under the coconut palm trees.

The quaint beachside village is also home to a range of excellent and award-winning accommodations including luxurious beachfront resorts, family-friendly apartments, boutique holiday houses and camping facilities.

“It’s amazing to be named best beach in the world,” said Melaleuca Resort manager Margaret Coop, who has lived in Palm Cove and managed the resort with her husband Stephen for 17 years.

MARGARET COOP MELALEUCA RESORT MANAGER
“It’s great for Palm Cove but also for the area.

“Our guests call Melaleuca a home away from home, and that is the vibe that Palm Cove also gives off. It’s casual but not too casual, warm and friendly – you walk down the street and people say hello and look you in the eye.”

The Reef House Adults Retreat at the popular beach has been the recent recipient of a number of awards. It was named the number one luxury hotel and number one hotel in Australia and South Pacific at the 2024 TripAdvisor Awards. It also recently won the best five-star luxury accommodation at the Australian Tourism Awards and the Queensland Tourism Awards.

The coastal township is also renowned for being home to world-class restaurants with award-winning chefs, cosy cafes and casual

eateries serving an eclectic range of cuisines highlighting the region’s sensational fresh, local produce. Whether it’s overlooking the sunny beach or enjoying seeing the moon rise over the ocean, dining here is always a pleasure.

As both locals and tourists love to shop, the hospitable seaside community doesn’t disappoint. Boutique clothing stores for both men and women, art galleries, gift stores and souvenir shops can be spotted as you meander through the suburb on its cobble-stone pathways. You can find stunning beach fashions, swim wear shops and mini supermarkets among the treasure trove of shops.

“When Conde Nast Traveller announced that Palm Cove was the world’s best beach for 2024, my first thought was ‘Why did it take so long?’,” said Annie Gillow, owner and manager of Annie’s at the Beach and the Beach Catwalk clothing boutiques. “Of course, we are all very proud and can only agree. Where else can you spot dolphins frolicking about 20 metres in front of you?

“Driving around the corner into Williams Esplanade at Palm Cove is always a wow moment. The mesmerising postcard blue Coral Sea, the palm trees, the view of the two islands (Double Island & Scouts Hat), the enormous Melaleuca paperbark trees that have literally been built around buildings and proudly grow through the roofs of other buildings always seems surreal, and you never tire of that view.

“I’m a true loyalist of Palm Cove and love the place, the village feel and its natural charm. Palm Cove has been my life for the last 18 years, and I just love the place.”

The appeal of the coastal community may be its relaxed atmosphere, but it’s also a great portal to exploring the Great Barrier Reef and the ancient rainforest with tours available to suit all adventurers.

Shane Dennis of Ray White Cairns Beaches is a Palm Cove businessman who others might easily envy.

“My office is based on the esplanade in Palm Cove, and I have the best view every day,” he said. “When you combine the beautiful esplanade and the other elements that make up Palm Cove, there’s not much better.”

Mr Healy says he will always have a close connection with the area.

“Palm Cove has a special place in my heart because it was where I first lived while working at the old Travelodge Palm Cove resort when I moved to Cairns more than 40 years ago,” he said. “I love the people and the place; it holds some wonderful memories and has a fantastic future.

“With the Double Island resort lease back in the state’s hands and Wangetti Trailing opening up, I’m more than confident that Palm Cove’s best days are ahead.”

Luma Swim

Luma Swim, the brainchild of local designer and model Lucy C Miller, brings a splash of vibrant elegance to the beach with a black bikini and coordinating one piece. Vibes of the sea, the sun, sand, low humidity and fresh breezes epitomise a Palm Cove winter, reflected here under the iconic palm trees and meandering path between Nu Nu Restaurant and the Coral Sea.

Tropical friendly fabrics combined with individual and clever boutiquestyle choices are the secret to always looking fresh and sun-touched.

Jade wears a Lulu Life two-piece pantsuit teamed with a cute Baku bandeau bikini. The postcard-blue frangipani print of this matching set screams “carefree beach holiday”.

The joy of this print is that it opens up to having almost endless accessory choices.

To complete the look, we added on-trend accessories - chunky platforms, a Louenhide crossbody bag and tasteful jewellery, creating perfection in readiness for that beach getaway.

Tristan rocks this super-fine cotton shirt by True North. This quirky palm tree print is so wearable for any casual beachside bar or beach wedding and is offset with these winter-white, bamboo cotton shorts. We’ve kept it simple and relaxed with Havaianas as thongs are very accepted at this beach-side location.

To complete this duo’s impressive coastal statement, we added Szade and Reality sunglasses.

All fashion items are available at Annie’s at the Beach and Beach Catwalk boutiques at Palm Cove, which are proud to be supporting Australian designed fashions.

Palm Cove Perks Up: Buzzing Café and Convenience Store Now Open!

Palms Supermarket and Cafe Veivers have opened to rave reviews in the beachside suburb.

The supermarket and cafe have proven to be extremely popular since opening their doors in April - for their convenience, friendly staff, fresh produce and delicious coffee and ice cream.

Customers are thrilled about the new establishment, with comments on social media praising their friendly staff, delicious coffee and generous ice cream scoops. Reviewers promised a return visit and recommendations to their friends.

The supermarket and cafe are becoming increasingly popular and a go-to place for locals and tourists alike, from shopping for the everyday essentials to a hangout place for a casual coffee and a bite to eat.

Owner Yadwinder Manesh said the new premises on the corner of Veivers Rd and Triton St is designed to cater to both locals and tourists and offer them the convenience of a one-stop

shop with a wide range of local produce from Far North Queensland suppliers including Mungalli Milk, Baked on Red Hill, The Peanut Project, Global Gourmet Yoghurt as well as local Kombucha, juices and fruit and vegetables.

Yadwinder and his wife Manju are eagerly working with local businesses to incorporate additional products in both the supermarket and the cafe in the near future.

“Our vision is to make this supermarket and cafe one of the standouts in Australia fit for our beautiful beach,” Yadwinder said.

Popular drawcards at Cafe Veivers include premium brands Prana chai and Vittoria coffee, which is very smooth with just the right amount of bitterness.

The cafe offers the ideal location to enjoy locally made cakes, smoothies, juices, milkshakes, pies, sausage rolls, croissants and sandwiches. Palm Cove is the perfect spot for cooling down with delicious ice cream – indulge in flavours such as butterscotch or mint choc chip.

Yadwinder said his barista staff had more than 30 years’ experience between them and all live in the beautiful northern beaches.

“We have a really passionate crew,” he said.

“They’re friendly, helpful and they enjoy what they do.

“Response from locals has been great. Customers love our coffee and the supermarket and the cafe have been a great addition to Palm Cove.

“I love the beach, it has a good vibe and a great community spirit.”

In line with the beautification of the Palm Cove area, the supermarket features an eye-catching mural painted by local artist Atlantis Wade Lewis.

Be sure to check out this fabulous new addition to Palm Cove, the perfect spot for enjoying a refreshing ice cream or a delicious coffee as you soak up the atmosphere at the best beach in the world!

Funds Raised Towards Surgical Robot

In an extraordinary show of community support and generosity, a fundraising dinner hosted by the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation has raised more than $749,250 for the ‘Donate for DaNi’ campaign.

The funds will be directed towards acquiring a surgical robot, a groundbreaking addition to Cairns Hospital that promises to revolutionise surgical care in the region.

The invitation-only Starlit Soiree, held on the disused runway at Cairns Airport, featured an exquisite tasting menu crafted by acclaimed Nu Nu Restaurant MasterChef Nick Holloway, complemented by premium wines and a dazzling performance by The Marias.

The event brought together an array of dedicated supporters, including prominent community leaders, philanthropists and health care advocates, all united by a common cause.

Foundation CEO Gina Hogan said she was overwhelmed by the outpouring of generosity from the community.

“The success of this event brings us significantly closer to our $4.3 million target for the surgical robot,” she said.

“This state-of-the-art technology will enhance surgical precision, improve patient recovery times and reduce complications. Moreover, it will attract top medical talent to our region, ensuring better health care for all.

“With the community’s continued support, we are confident we will reach our goal and bring this life-changing technology to Cairns Hospital.”

Gina paid tribute to Kenfrost Homes, which donated a staggering $450,000 and the Chapman Foundation which donated $100,000.

“The stunning amount raised adds to $1,023,000 already raised through previous fundraising events by Trinity Advisory and Nu Nu Restaurant, as well as numerous other donations from our generous supporters,” she said. “This also means the campaign has raised 41 percent of the $4.3 million goal.

“Each of these contributions, large and small, has been vital in driving us towards our goal. The Foundation extends its gratitude to all attendees, donors and event partners who made the night a resounding success. Each contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to transforming healthcare in our community.”

Are These Losing Strategies Harming Your Relationship?

If you’re interested in healing a relationship that often feels like it’s on the brink…or if you’re interested in making a great relationship, greater, you first need to stop doing the things that are causing disharmony and disconnection. The losing strategy profile is a great way to understand how our behaviour may be impacting our partner and the overall relational esteem of the relationship.

There are five losing strategies, outlined below that many of us play out in our relationships, sometimes consciously, but mostly unconsciously…getting us less of what we really want in our relationships– to feel seen, heard, loved and connected.

Often our losing strategy profiles come packaged up – like a combo! So, for example, we might attempt to control (or manage) our partner’s and if that fails, we might follow up with letting them know exactly what we think of them without filter or respect to their boundaries (unbridled self-expression) or we might shut down our connection to them (stonewalling). I encourage you to stay focused on your losing strategy profile, and not your partner’s…as tempting as that may be.

Here’s a summary of each losing strategy profile and how they can impact your relationship.

1. Being Right

The question to ask yourself is this “do I want to be right or do I want to be

married?” Shifting the energy we place on being right to building relational esteem and doing what is best for our relationships will serve us to build greater connection and trust in our relationships. Objective evidence (e.g. “it’s written right here!”) is great for solving a crime or when presenting a case for the best way forward at work, but it is not helpful at home. We might feel some satisfaction in proving our point, but this will be short-lived as our partner will unlikely want to feel close and connected to us.

2. Controlling Your Partner

When we are hurting or feeling uncertain, it is tempting to want to control our partner so that we feel more at ease in the relationship. The need to control your partner can manifest in various ways, from making decisions for them to attempting to manage and manipulate their behaviours and choices. You can express your needs and boundaries lovingly but we can’t make anyone do anything…and have a happy relationship. No one likes to be controlled.

3.

Unbridled Self-Expression

Telling our partners, in the greatest of detail, how miserable they make us, using unsavoury language and name calling might make us feel better at the time but I can guarantee, it will not engender a generous response from our partners. Communicating our needs and giving feedback to our partners is still important but do it in a way that encourages a sense of vulnerability between the two of you.

4. Withdrawing/Stonewalling

Withdrawing or stonewalling involves pulling away from interaction and refusing to engage with your partner, especially during conflicts. This strategy can manifest as silent treatment, avoiding conversations, or physically leaving the room. Withdrawal can occur suddenly following an argument or slowly over time where you stop sharing your lives with each other. Instead, practise turning towards your partner. Giving feedback, for example, “I really want to hear what you have to say but I’m finding it really difficult to stay here when you talk to me in that way”; is far more beneficial for your relationship than shutting down or turning away.

5. Retaliation

Retaliation involves responding to perceived slights or hurts by trying to hurt your partner in return – you hurt me, so I will hurt you. This strategy often includes passive-aggressive behaviours, holding grudges, engaging in tit-fortat actions, backhanded comments, withholding, humiliating, making fun of etc. If you are angry, let your partner know what your boundaries are - but don’t act it out.

Were you able to get a sense of your losing strategy profile? If your relationship feels like it’s on the brink or you want to make your great relationship greater, connect with Biannka, Couples Therapist at hello@ biannkabrannigan.com or www. biannkabrannigan.com

WHOLELIFE PHARMACY & HEALTHFOODS

Winter Travel Health Essentials: Gear Up For A Chilly Adventure

: wholelife.com.au

Co-Founder and Pharmacist

Australians love to travel, and although our most sought-after destinations tend to boast tropical beaches or crystal clear swimming holes in the Mediterranean Sea, chilly climates are having a moment in the spotlight.

Embarking on a winter adventure is an exciting departure from the norm, but with colder temperatures comes an increased risk of illness. Follow our tips to get prepared and ensure you stay healthy on your next chilly adventure!

8 MUST-HAVES FOR THRIVING IN THE COLD

1. Travel-handy Hand Sanitiser: Ward off winter bugs and prevent the spread of illness with a small, convenient hand sanitiser that clips onto your bag and goes everywhere you go!

2. Thermal layers: Layer up to ensure you stay warm down to the core.

3. Immune Support Supplements: Load up on your probiotics, Vitamin C, Zinc, Elderberry and Echinacea.

4. Portable heat packs

5. Electrolyte tablets: Support hydration and lost electrolytes from cold weather activities. Our current favourite is the Hot Hydration Electrolyte Powder by Hydralyte, helping you to stay toasty warm while hydrating!

6. Cold and flu relief, in case the cold gets the better of you.

7. Sun Protection: Even in cold weather the sun can pack a punch! Remain sunsafe wherever you go.

8. Healthy Snacks: Nuts, dried fruit, and protein bars will help you maintain energy and nutrient levels.

TRAVEL VACCINATIONS

Before embarking on your overseas adventure, ensure your vaccinations are upto-date.

It’s always best to consult your health professional about your vaccination requirements before travelling, as your immunity to certain diseases may have lapsed and you may require a booster. Pharmacists in many states are now able to provide a larger range of travel vaccines, which can be more economical than visiting the GP.

At WholeLife, our pharmacists are available to advise on, and administer, a wide range of travel vaccines, including:

• Influenza

• COVID-19

• Typhoid

• Hepatitis A and B

• Pneumococcal

Travellers can also bring diseases back with them when they return home to Australia, so getting vaccinated before travelling is important in protecting your own health as well as the health of others.

JET LAG

Before travel:

Shift sleep and wake times gradually by 30 minutes per day, starting 3 days before departure, to match the destination time zone.

Inflight:

• Set watch to destination time.

• Keep hydrated; avoid alcohol, tea and coffee.

• Sleep at destination’s nighttime; use ear plugs and an eye mask.

On arrival:

• Maximise sunlight exposure during the day – keep active with a light walk.

• Establish new routine for meals and activities.

• Adults may consider 1-3 caffeinated beverages in the morning, but avoid caffeine after midday to ensure a good

night’s sleep.

• Delay sleep until night time, or take a short half-hour nap if you’re feeling sleep deprived.

• Stay in the dark during night time at new time zone, even if you’re unable to sleep.

TRAVELLING WITH MEDICINES

People taking regular medications can consult our WholeLife pharmacists for assistance in managing medications while away. It is important to:

• Consider the amount/s of medications that you’ll need to take with you, to ensure you have enough for the duration of your trip

• Keep medication in original packaging, preferably in your carry-on luggage in case of lost baggage.

When travelling outside of Australia with medications it’s also important to check the local regulations beforehand, as many countries place restrictions on medications you can bring in.

Commonly restricted medications include:

• amphetamines, such as ADHD medications

• medicinal cannabis (including oils, creams, edibles)

• opioid-based painkillers, such as codeine

• anti-anxiety and antidepressant medicines

• sleeping pills

• medications containing pseudoephedrine, such as cold and flu tablets

Come visit your local WholeLife Pharmacy & Healthfoods to check off all the essential travel items on your list. Our pharmacists are always available and happy to discuss medication and vaccination requirements with you, ensuring you receive advice tailored to you and your specific travel plans.

To take a product out of the paddock and turn it into a shelf stable food or beverage that is not only environmentally sustainable but is also commercially viable is no mean feat. Thousands of food entrepreneurs attempt to do just this every year. Sometimes they have too many tomatoes left after the season, sometimes they want the legacy of their family recipe to live on for generations to come, sometimes they want to share their passion for food with the world, and sometimes they have had a brilliant idea and with a little encouragement from friends they are willing to risk it all. No matter where they start, very few can succeed on the journey without some assistance.

To commercially scale a shelf stable product requires a lot of expertise. From food scientists to develop the recipe and determine the shelf life; to marketing experts who can design a brand with packaging to suit. It is rarely wise for a new venture to invest the money required to establish a full capacity manufacturing kitchen before they have completed their proof of concept and secured sales contracts. The option of trialling a product and building the business organically is essential if the enterprise is to be environmentally and financially sustainable. A shared kitchen facility can make that product trial affordable and successful.

The Qld Food Incubator fields emails and phone calls every day from farmers looking to value add, stakeholders in the Indigenous food industry, and passionate food entrepreneurs looking to commercially scale. In the past, the enquiries would be fielded by the FNQ Food Incubator and the commercial kitchen of the Food Manufacturing Hub. Since those two entities have ceased trading and sold off their equipment, there is a gap in the market

to support our new food manufacturers. As the Bunda St facility only catered to vegan, wet condiments, the team and I have always nurtured a database of shared commercial kitchen facilities to cater for a broad range of products. That database is growing slowly but please email info@qldfoodincubator.com.au should you wish to add your kitchen to the list.

To support the industry further, the Qld Food Incubator is working with Government stakeholders such as the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries; farmers and their member bodies such as FNQ Growers; industry organisations such as the Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers; and food manufacturers to develop a shared kitchen facility for the commercial development of shelf stable products. Could the Mossman Sugar Mill precinct be repurposed to process surplus crops from the region? Could kitchen facilities at the TAFE be developed to support food manufacturing businesses? Could a privately owned kitchen be supported to service the needs of our industry? What other ideas do you have for a facility to support our food manufacturing industry? Please email info@ qldfoodincubator.com.au if you would like to work with us to develop the food manufacturing industry taking our fresh products from the paddock to the shelf stable food and beverage business.

Regional Priorities in the Spotlight

Chief Executive Officer

Cairns Chamber of Commerce : (07) 4031 1838 : info@cairnschamber.com.au

Just like that, we have hit the halfway line of 2024 and what a whirlwind it has been.

We hit the ground running when the Cairns Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with Advance Cairns and Tourism Tropical North Queensland, joined a delegation of regional stakeholders to Brisbane Parliament. We arranged meetings with ministers and shadow ministers, to spotlight regional priorities and discuss funding needed to build a more sustainable and robust future for our region. Focus areas included health, crime, connectivity and water security.

We strive to ensure Cairns remains a safe haven for tourists, a magnet for new residents and a thriving community for businesses and current residents. We have been working closely with the State Government and Cairns Regional Council to address the ongoing crime issues. We successfully lobbied the Qld Government to implement a program

allowing eligible businesses in Far North Qld to access funding for targeted security measures to protect their premises.

We were pleased to see this delivered by Government in the form of a $5000 grant. The delegation effort also brought an additional $128.5 million in funding for the Cairns Water Security project. Following our delegation to Brisbane, we are gearing up for a trip to Canberra, to continue regional advocacy at a federal level.

Our 2024 Emerging Leaders Program is in full swing. These emerging leaders have already participated in industry immersion days across sectors such as Construction, Manufacturing, Aviation, Health and Education, gaining invaluable insights into the significance of these sectors.

The 2024 Cairns Regional Jobs Committee is a group of leading local industry experts addressing our unique jobs and skills challenges.

This is an initiative of the Qld Government run by The Cairns Chamber and draws on a diverse range of industries to ensure we understand our region’s skilling needs.

The Cairns RJC and the Chamber of Commerce played a significant role in developing the newly released Workforce Development Plan, produced by Jobs Queensland for the Aviation, Maritime

and Marine industries. This collaborative effort, unveiled at the Maritime Jobs and Careers Expo, highlights our region’s capacity for cross-industry collaboration. We actively participated in the consultation process for the Queensland Skills Strategy, which emphasises the need for a robust training system to produce a skilled workforce, increase training opportunities, support disadvantaged groups, improve apprenticeship completion rates, and strengthen school-to-industry pathways ensuring we address the current shortfall in workforce across our business sector.

We have also hosted workshops to help businesses navigate employment law, onboarding, training and retention strategies. These workshops were well supported by SMEs eager to learn and a desire to do better, to be better for both their customers and staff.

The success of the RJC is dependent on input from local business leaders and industry experts. Please contact us via the RJC website and subscribe to our newsletter at www.cairnsrjc.com.au.

Lastly, mark your calendars for the 2024 Business Excellence Awards (BEX) on October 18 at the Cairns Convention Centre. We are calling for nominations and sponsorship opportunities are also available. Please call Alannah on 07 4031 1838 for further information.

Lakeland’s Powerhouse Potential Cemented

Chief Executive Officer

Regional Development Australia Tropical North (RDA) : (07) 4041 1729 : info@rdatropicalnorth.org.au

Lakeland’s potential as a horticultural powerhouse for Northern Australia has been cemented with the delivery of the Detailed Business Case for the Lakeland Irrigation Area Scheme in Far North Queensland.

Regional Development Australia (RDA) Tropical North led the development of the proposal in consultation with Cook Shire Council, the Western Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation and Lakeland growers. It was supported by funding from the Federal Government’s National Water Infrastructure Development Fund, an initiative of the Northern Australia and Agricultural Competitiveness White Papers.

The Scheme had involved extensive stakeholder consultation over the past four years and the search can now begin for a proponent to undertake the Detailed Design phase necessary for State Government approval before construction can start.

This exciting project was borne from the Lakeland growers whose entrepreneurial nature and best practice environmental methods led to the vision for agricultural expansion to develop new industries in Cape York Peninsula.

One of the major success stories will be direct Indigenous involvement for the Western

people resulting in the development of Indigenous-led businesses across agricultural supply chains on Indigenous land.

The Lakeland Irrigation Area Scheme will be a game-changer for a sparsely populated and under-resourced region by allowing growers to cultivate diverse, higher value crops that would lead to improved investor confidence in the region.

Studies unequivocally demonstrate that the project will provide substantial social and economic benefits to the broader Cape and Torres region by accelerating population growth which is necessary for the region to become self-sustaining and economically viable.

This means infrastructure like schools, medical facilitates, retail shops such as supermarkets and services including child care will have the required population base to make them viable. RDA Tropical North will advocate for the Queensland Government to establish an independently chaired Mobilisation Taskforce consisting of State and Federal representatives, Cook Shire Council, Western Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation, growers and RDA Tropical North.

This taskforce would identify a proponent, such as Sunwater, and determine the policy foundations for developing the project

appropriately which could mean making it a Coordinated Project.

It would also put impact assessment arrangements in place, negotiate final cost estimates and cost sharing arrangements between governments and the private sector, and ensure all ancillary planning is in place to maximise social, economic and environmental benefits.

The State Government also needs to support Cook Shire Council in planning for the expansion of Lakeland, amend the Mitchell Catchment Water Resource Plan to accommodate the Scheme, and seek funding support through the National Water Grid Authority.

Acting now means that water could flow by 2031 to bring much needed industry, jobs and infrastructure to the communities of Cape York Peninsula.

Accessible Tourism Initiatives Introduced

Chief Executive Officer

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) : (07) 4015 1201 : ceo@ttnq.org.au

Anaccessible rainforest canopy walkway and a kayak launcher are among 46 new Tropical North Queensland initiatives to result from Queensland’s Year of Accessible Tourism.

The Queensland Government’s $12 million investment in making tourism more accessible is enabling a rapid shift in the Tropical North’s appeal to visitors of all abilities.

Tropical North Queensland has a long history of offering accessible experiences in our dual World Heritage areas and in 2022 launched an Accessibility Hub on the destination website to assist travellers select activities and itineraries suited to their ability.

This portal allows people of all abilities to fulfil their dream for travel with wheelchairfriendly beaches and rainforest boardwalks identified as well as products such as Quicksilver’s water-powered lift to lower people into the water to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef.

The Queensland Year of Accessible Tourism in 2023-2024 has helped many more Tropical North Queensland operators to modify their premises, introduce new products, and better communicate how their business was accessible.

Eight operators were able to modify their infrastructure under the Boosting Accessible Tourism Experiences Grants. This included adding new fishing gear to allow people of all abilities to join Cairns Reef Fishing Tours and the introduction of an audio tour at Herberton Historical Village.

Etty Bay Cabins and Caravan Park received an Accessible Tourism Infrastructure Grant to refurbish a cabin into an accessible family cabin, while Access Project Grants of up to $250,000 were awarded to five of our operators.

This resulted in a boost to infrastructure with accessible modifications at Cooktown Museum, Hook-A-Barra and Strait Experience.

The Daintree Discovery Centre is building a 70m accessible canopy walkway linking the Discovery Theatre to the Interpretive Centre and Cobbold Gorge Tours received funding for an all-terrain wheelchair, modified coaster bus and accessible kayak launch pontoon.

The key to being accessible is to be helpful and provide the information necessary to understand how there is extra assistance available for people who have an accessibility challenge whether it is a temporary injury

like a broken leg, someone with a pram or in a wheelchair.

The bulk of funding for our region was delivered in the communications space with 31 products receiving the Access Starter Grant of $5000 to upgrade their website and other methods of communicating their accessibility to potential visitors.

Tropical North Queensland has gained a higher profile in the accessibility space following visits by influencers including twotime World Para Surfing champion Sam Bloom, the inspiration behind the movie Penguin Bloom starring Naomi Watts, who was hosted by TTNQ and was very impressed with the variety of activities she could do with her family.

We look forward to seeing the projects that received funding start to roll out over the coming year and further increase Tropical North Queensland’s reputation as an accessible destination.

Chief Executive Officer

Advance Cairns

The next 12 months will be an extraordinary time with State and Federal elections on the horizon. This presents a material opportunity to ensure that all sides of politics hear the region’s push for initiatives that drive wide economic benefit. There has never been a more important time for us all to be engaged and understand what this can mean for the future of the region, not just for ourselves but for our communities and future generations.

I was pleased to represent the region at the Budget briefing at Parliament House in Brisbane to drill down into what the 2024-25 State Budget means for Far North Queensland. We were delighted to see the region receive funding for the Cairns Health and Innovation Centre and the Cairns Water Security Project. Both these projects are essential – if we don’t have an adequate water supply and if we don’t have a comprehensive medical and health service, we simply cannot thrive.

Funding from the State Government for

these projects is evidence of the power of working together and is the result of the combined efforts of a range of key partners. We were very pleased to support Cairns Regional Council in advocacy for their water security project which will ensure that the cost burden is not borne exclusively by ratepayers. We will now be turning our attention to the Federal Government to match that funding.

In coming months we will see funds flow to vital projects including the duplication of the Cairns Western Arterial Road between Redlynch Connector Road and Captain Cook Highway, the Cairns Marine Precinct - Common User Facility ship lift project, and the expansion of TAFE Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef International Marine College.

While we celebrate these recent achievements, we recognise that our work is far from complete. With the State election taking place in October, we will be continuing to raise awareness across all shades of politics to key priorities including:

• General Aviation: An Australia-first Cessna Caravan pilot training simulator and a 10,000m² common user hangar.

• Road Connectivity: Upgrading access to the northern beaches (Cairns Western Arterial Road and Captain Cook Highway), the Tablelands (the Barron River bridge in particular which is in urgent need of replacement, and the Palmerston Highway), and inland connections via the Gulf Savannah Way.

• Food and Water Security: Supporting the Lakeland Irrigation Area Scheme and Etheridge Shire Agricultural and Irrigation Precinct project.

Advance Cairns is the peak independent advocacy and economic development organisation for Cairns and Far North Queensland. While Advance Cairns takes the lead, our success depends on the collaborative support of our stakeholders and members. Together, we can sustainably drive growth and prosperity for our region.

Keeping it Local –Harding Property Law Grows

The Harding Property Law team pride themselves on providing high quality customer service and achieving the desired results for their clients.

Harding Property Law is a small local firm focused on transactional property law work including conveyancing and leasing.

The team assists people to buy and sell houses, apartments, commercial buildings, farms and everything in between.

They have just expanded their offering to existing and new clients in the areas of wills, estates and litigation/ disputes, with a long-term professional colleague and friend, Joshua Auld, joining them this month.

Legal Practice director James Harding said Harding Property Law goes above and beyond to assist people with their legal matters and offer personalised service.

“We answer the phone and get back to people quickly,” he said.

“Our sole focus is helping and supporting our clients whether that be achieving their goal of owning their first property, leasing a new commercial space or helping them with a property dispute they are having.

“We treat every matter like it is our only matter, so each client gets the care and attention they deserve. Property is a big deal so we are here to help and make what can be a scary process into an exciting and easy one.

“Also, we bring our dogs to work every day!”

James loves the variety his job offers. “We love that every day can be a little different, and you never know who is going to call and need us to help them,” he said.

“Buying and selling houses, especially those doing so for their first time, is a stressful and emotional time. Our clients are always so grateful for our care and support, and that makes the last two years of hard work worth it for us.”

James has been a lawyer since 2013.

For the first half of his career he worked in a small Cairns-based property law firm, with the firm joining a national company in 2018.

“I enjoyed this for a few years and it really taught me that regional practitioners like myself could compete, and sometimes exceed, the expertise and service offering of the big cities,” James said.

“In early 2022, I had decided to turn my professional focus back to Cairns and start my own practice. My wife Morgan and I both left our jobs in May 2022, got married in June, then started HPL on

August 1, 2022 right after our honeymoon.

“People always think it is hard and say ‘I couldn’t work with my husband/wife’ but we think it’s a massive point of difference for us. After almost two years of spending almost 24/7 together sometimes it feels like we share a brain. Clients love that they can speak to one or both of us and know they will always get the help they need.”

James and Morgan have lived in Cairns most of their lives, having completed their schooling and tertiary study here.

“Conveyancing and property law can be very localised, so we have no plans to leave Cairns, except for an occasional holiday,” James said.

What started as a husband-and-wife team two years ago quickly expanded into a six-person team.

“We are really excited to have welcomed Josh Auld and Kes Spannenburg to our team and it feels like the right time to be expanding as we have just moved to a bigger and better office space on Spence Street.”

It’s time to meet the new team members!

Joshua Auld is a senior wills and disputes lawyer with seven years’ experience. Josh specialises in wills and estate and litigation, which complements the property practice perfectly. He will be able to support clients in what can be a very difficult and stressful time.

Kes Spannenburg, a graduate lawyer, has just joined the team. After completing her Practical Legal Training (PLT) with Harding Property Law last year, Kes worked in another local firm, however she ultimately decided she wanted to work with the HPL team. After working in conveyancing for a few years she is perfectly suited to the team and looks forward to helping clients achieve their goals.

Big Changes For Australian Workplaces In 2024

This past year has brought significant updates to Australian employment laws, impacting both employers and employees. John Hayward, Director of WGC Lawyers, breaks down the key changes:

RIGHT TO DISCONNECT

Starting Soon:

• Non-small businesses (15+ employees) - August 26th, 2024

• Small businesses (<15 employees)August 26th, 2025

What it Means:

Employees have gained the lawful right to “switch off” after work. They can refuse to answer emails, calls, or messages from employers or third parties outside of their designated working hours, unless the refusal is unreasonable.

Reasonable Refusal Factors:

Whether an employee’s refusal is justified depends on, the reason for the contact, whether or not the employee receives compensation for after-hours availability, the employee’s job role and responsibilities, personal circumstances, and other factors may also be considered.

FIXED-TERM CONTRACTS:

Effective since: December 6th, 2023

Restrictions:

Employers can no longer offer fixedterm contracts exceeding two years (including extensions) or renewed

contracts deemed substantially similar to previous ones for the same role. Exceptions include training programs, awards allowing fixed terms, and specific situations like peak demand periods.

Breaching the Rules:

Fixed-term contracts which exceed these limits will be deemed as permanent positions. An employee in these circumstances will be entitled to relevant notice periods, redundancy payments, and unfair dismissal rights.

Employer Obligations:

Employers must provide a Fixed Term Contract Information Statement to all employees on such contracts. Failure to comply with these regulations or neglecting to provide the Statement may result in penalties.

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE:

Effective Since: July 1st, 2024

Increase:

The National Minimum Wage rose 3.75% to $915.90 per week ($24.10 per hour). Minimum award wages also saw a 3.75% increase.

Both changes are effective from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2024.

SUPERANNUATION

GUARANTEE INCREASE:

Effective Since: July 1st, 2024

Increase:

Superannuation guarantee contributions rose from 11% to 11.5% for salary and wage payments. It’s scheduled to further increase to 12% on July 1st, 2025.

DEFINITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

Commencement Date:

To be determined by the Australian Government (expected August 26th, 2024 or earlier)

Clarification:

New definitions for “employee” and “employer” will be added to the Fair Work Act.

These definitions will focus on the true nature of the working relationship, considering all aspects of the relationship including both the terms of any contracts but also the practical realities of the relationship, instead of just solely relying on the terms of any written agreements.

These changes are significant and will impact most workplaces across Australia. Employers and employees should become familiar with these changes to ensure a smooth and compliant work environment.

Happy new financial year to all!

CAIRNS DISTRICT CRIME PREVENTION UNIT

Implement Basic Measures to Help Prevent Crime

SERGEANT CARY COOLICAN

Cairns Police Crime Prevention

Co-ordinator

Fear of crime is not necessarily reflective of the actual probability of being a victim of crime, yet it can be debilitating nonetheless. By implementing basic preventative measures, you can reduce your fear and opportunities for offenders to target you and your property. By regularly assessing our home security, improving security and changes to our everyday behaviours, you can prevent crime.

Homes with windows or doors left open or unsecured are more likely to attract a potential offender. Offenders are looking for cash or credit cards, small valuable items such as jewellery and electronic items which can be quickly sold for cash. In recent years we’ve seen cars stolen after car keys were stolen from plain view on kitchen benches, desks and bedside tables.

Ensuring all doors, windows and security screen doors are key locked, you are well on your way to having a secure home. Conduct regular checks to ensure all doors and windows lock,

consider improving outdated doorknobs and ensure house and car keys are secured out of sight.

Reviewing your home security using a layered approach is a straightforward way to securing your home on a budget. We have an instructional video and information sheets to help https://www. police.qld.gov.au/safety-and-preventing-crime.

Community and businesses are encouraged to register CCTV security cameras with Police as part of the Community Camera Alliance (CCA). This assists police when looking for vision where offences occur. For more information go to: https://www.police. qld.gov.au/safety-and-preventing-crime/ community-camera-alliance

Local police invite you to join our myPolice Facebook Page which aims to provide prevention information, crime alerts, warnings, and matters of interest for the greater Cairns area. All members of the community are encouraged to share our links and help

police by providing timely information about offences and problems in the community. https://www.facebook.com/ myPoliceGreaterCairns/

Police are making it easier for you to report some types of crimes or updating an existing report online. If you don’t need police to attend immediately, you can fill out an online form to report some types of crime, traffic incidents and complaints. You can update property lists or add information using this format. Similarly, you can withdraw your complaint, or ask for an update. https://www.police.qld.gov.au/policelinkreporting.

You can still report directly to police by phone. If a crime is happening now, a life is threatened, or the offender is still in the area, you are encouraged to call Triple Zero – 000. If not, call Policelink on 131444 for non-urgent reports or you can report information anonymously to Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.

Why Sponsorship?

Danae Jones is Managing Director of PR & Marketing firm Danae Jones Consulting Pty Ltd : danae@danaejones.com.au : www.danaejones.com.au

There is no question in business that we get asked to contribute to so many organisations and sponsor so many causes. And it’s sometimes easier to just say no so people stop bothering you and asking you to put your hand in your pocket.

But I’d like you to think about it differently for a moment. Have you ever sat down and really thought about what organisations, charities, not for profits or causes align with you and your business? The cause doesn’t need to be associated with your industry, but the organisation might embody a whole heap of goodness that is important in life and to you and your team emotionally.

I encourage you to sit down with your team and take the time to brainstorm this. Then choose one or a handful of entities you wish to support.

Now I don’t want you to think that you need to contribute significantly to all of these organisations, it might be something considered quite small for you, but could be received as something very big for that organisation.

If you don’t have surplus cash to donate, consider in-kind support. This could be demonstrated in a variety of ways – here are just a few ideas:

1. A member of your team sitting on their Board or Committee and offering your skill sets to that organisation on a pro bono basis

2. Offering to initiate a third-party fundraising event to help raise funds for the organisation. It could be something as simple as you decide to chip in $1,000 and you ask your team to come up with a fun way to match the donation. It might be a morning tea or a dress a certain colour day to work in return for gold coin donations from your staff. This might be a regular activity that you run over a period of 3 months to build up the fundraising

bucket for the organisation before you do the official hand over.

3. It could even be something as simple as purchasing tables at one of the charity events throughout the year and encouraging all your big spending clients to come along and also help raise money for the cause.

My point is, sponsorship does not have to be for big business, everyone in business can get involved in some way shape or form and attract a mutual benefit from it.

Sponsorship Marketing has been defined as: “A corporate sponsorship is a form of marketing in which a corporation pays for all or some of the costs associated with a project or program in exchange for recognition.” Source: Investopedia

Sponsorship is a Marketing and PR tool just like any other form that you can use in your business to help you achieve your desired goals.

Before entering into a sponsorship agreement you need to first be clear about your reasons for doing it, how much you want to spend on it, and what you want to

achieve from it. Do you want to do it as part of your marketing mix, or do you just want to do it because it makes you ‘feel good’ (i.e. contributing to your child’s school or sporting team) with no expectation of anything in return.

Once you are clear on what you do or don’t want to get out of it, then you can start to work up your sponsorship plan. Let’s assume you do want to achieve recognition from the sponsorship – then you need to develop a sponsorship strategy so you achieve best BANG for BUCK.

Just some benefits of Corporate Sponsorship include:

• Improving your public image or perception in the marketplace as a ‘good corporate citizen’

• Increase your degree of influence

• Increase your brand awareness

• Increase employee satisfaction

• Increase sales

• Assist with market research

• Target a niche group

The key to the most successful Corporate Sponsorships is ‘mutually beneficial’ agreements.

Building on acreage offers the alluring opportunity to create expansive, luxurious retreats that are perfectly integrated into their natural surroundings. With the freedom of space homeowners can enjoy benefits such as privacy, serenity, space for a large shed and can even fulfil the dream of growing their own vegetables and keeping a horse.

The Neater Homes Team specialise in designing and constructing custom homes that transform these vast spaces into personalised sanctuaries. Such was the case with this stunning, sprawling home recently completed by the Neater Team, in Kewarra Beach. The custom C-shaped creation was inspired by

the company’s signature collection designed by the company’s founder Col Neate, the Hinchinbrook Range. This home capitalises on the acre property’s extensive frontage and stunning mountain views ensuring that natural light floods the interior, making almost all rooms accessible to the stunning vistas.

Its features are aligned with those of the Hinchinbrook designs which exude resortstyle ambiance, seamlessly blending tropical outdoor living with spacious internal living areas and bedrooms. Pavilion roofs and pedestal-based columns add a touch of grandeur and create a timeless aesthetic, while tall doorways, raised ceilings clad with VJ board or timber, and large windows framing

SPassion for Sweet Treats Recognised

areeta Zandbergen’s passion for creating gluten-free sweet treats has been recognised with a finalist spot in the Cairns Business Women’s Club’s Businesswoman of the Year Awards.

The proud owner of Sweet N Sanity in Mareeba is a finalist in the Sole Entrepreneur category.

The talented chef hand makes all of her desserts, and the range has grown with the business, which opened just over two years ago.

Sweet N Sanity offers a range that is gluten, dairy and refined sugar free. Classic desserts are on offer, including carrot cake, cheesecakes, cupcakes, brownies and tiramisu, as well as birthday cakes, hampers and platters.

All of Sweet N Sanity’s desserts are gluten free.

“I always wanted to have a dessert business but the direction to go gluten free was made when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease,” Sareeta said.

“My diagnosis meant that I had to adjust my diet, which altered my business plan.

“I wanted to create a variety of gluten free treats that didn’t lack texture or flavour and could be shared with others.”

Sareeta uses locally grown produce as the hero flavour in her desserts.

“We are fortunate to have such an abundance of amazing produce in our region,” she said.

“The tiramisu on the menu uses coffee from Jaques coffee plantation, mango cheesecake is made with delicious mangoes from the Golden Drop Winery’s mango farm, vanilla bean from Divine Vanilla, coconut from Beach Harvest and pineapples from Pinata Farms.”

Sareeta said food is her passion and creating her own desserts is her dream job.

“There’s such an amazing feeling when I see a customer’s face light up when they receive their desserts,” she said.

Country Girl at Heart

Rebecca Magro is a true country girl at heart – she lives and breathes country.

Rebecca has embraced her passion and now proudly operates Cowgirl Country in Yungaburra.

She began selling cowhide products at Mareeba and Yungaburra markets.

After some incredibly successful sell-out days, she realised the popularity of her products and set up shop at the old post office building in Mt Molloy.

She quickly outgrew her premises and then found the perfect space – a two-storey wooden barn in Yungaburra.

Cowgirl Country officially celebrated its grand opening in March. It now features an extensive showroom hosting the largest range of hides in Far North Queensland, showcasing cowhides and exotic hides with everything from antelopes to zebras, as well as uniquely created pieces of rustic furniture and art.

The shop is truly a feast for the senses – you will be overwhelmed by the sights and smells. It’s more than just a shop – it’s an unforgettable experience.

There is a huge range of items, including taxidermy animals, cowhide products, rugs, bags, purses, caps, jewellery, rifle cases, picture frames and mirrors, as well as horns, wagon wheels and lariat wreaths.

Cowgirl Country features a range of merchandise from Rebecca’s subbusinesses, Cowkid Country and Cowboy Country, including shirts, jackets, caps, bags, keyrings and stickers.

“I’ve committed myself 100 percent to the business,” Rebecca said.

“I love everything about it – I love cattle, horses, and creating beautiful things – I have a real creative streak.”

Cowboy Country

Rebecca’s dedication has been recognised with a finalist spot in the Cairns Business Women’s Club’s Businesswoman of the Year Awards. She is a proud finalist in the Sole Entrepreneur category.

“It’s a huge surprise for me and a real honour,” she said.

“It’s an honour to have come from such humble beginnings and be up against such incredible businesswomen – it’s mind-blowing.”

Rebecca was recently a finalist in the Tablelands Regional Council people’s choice category for customer service and business.

She takes great pride in customer service and giving her customers a fantastic experience while they browse her shop.

Upon entry to Cowgirl Country, you will be greeted by her mascot, Dolly Pugton.

Rebecca has spent many long days and nights working on her passion, her heart and soul, even her “blood, sweat, tears and swear words”.

In fact, the only time she stopped working was when she was forced to due to being bitten by a Juvenile Eastern Brown Snake.

Rebecca was taken by ambulance then a rescue helicopter to Cairns for treatment.

“The doctor said I should buy a Lotto ticket,” she said. “I’ve got a lot of stuff to do. I definitely wasn’t meant to die yet.”

In an act of gratitude, Rebecca raffled a set of horns, with funds raised going towards the Mareeba Ambulance and LifeFlight, who received $1000 each.

Rebecca loves raising funds for community organisations – on market days she accepts gold coin donations for parking on her property to be given to various charities. The award-winning Wild River Mountain Distillery is on site on market days, as well as live music; proceeds from raffles and sausage sizzles go towards whichever charity or non-profit organisation is on site for the month.

Rebecca, who has spent the majority of her life on the Tablelands, is a country girl through and through.

“I love the fresh air, the laidback yet hard-working, rewarding way of life, the genuine people and the outdoors,” she said.

Cowgirl Country will be opening a cafe in the very near future. Craft workshops will also be held on site – keep an eye out on their Facebook page for further information.

True Inspiration

Lorelle Haag is a true inspiration – proof that you can achieve anything you want if you have the passion, the determination and you work hard to achieve your goals.

After five months of hard training seven days a week and a very strict diet, Lorelle, 58, has been awarded the 2024 Natural Bodybuilding Australia (NBA) Oceania Masters Figure Pro Card at the NBA National Body Building Competition in Melbourne.

At the Nationals she placed first, second and fifth and also received her Pro Card.

She competed in the NBA Queensland Titles competition two weeks prior, placing with two firsts, a second and a fifth.

Lorelle then competed in a different Body Building federation - I Compete Natural (ICN) Brisbane/ Qld Titles - winning the 50+ title again and second in the Open age category and second in under 57kg open age. She also competed in the ICN national titles, placing first, second and fourth.

Overall she competed in 13 categories and came away with placings in all (five x first, five x second, one x fourth, one x fifth), plus her Pro Card.

Lorelle has been training seriously in the gym for about 13 years. Her husband Pete was the one who introduced her properly to the gym many years ago.

“I could see and feel the benefits of weight training for all my injuries and ailments,” Lorelle said.

“I became hooked on improving my body strength, fitness level and all over body composition.

“I was 50kg, slim, with no muscle or strength and injury issues. My first ever goal was to compete when I turned 50, which I did.

“I did three competitions in two years and hadn’t competed again until now.

“Before I started this comp prep I was around 63kg, still slim but strong muscle mass, better body composition, improved injury pain

and I feel and look better now in my late 50s than I did in my 30s.”

Lorelle has turned her passion of training and strengthening her own body and mind into her fulltime work.

She has now been a Personal Trainer (Just4UPT) for the past three years, helping many clients strengthen their bodies in general or because of injury, gaining muscle, losing weight, increasing self esteem, confidence and a positive mindset.

“I’m a firm believer that no matter what age or what injuries you may have you can always do some sort of exercise, movement and diet to improve your body strength, balance, weight and mindset,” Lorelle said.

“I am proof that anyone in the older age bracket or has illness or injury can improve body composition, body strength, muscle mass, bone density and all-over better health.”

“I had Hodgkins’s Lymphoma as a 13-year-old, have had two knee operations, torn ligaments, a broken wrist, fractured lower back, have a bulging disc and Spondylolisthesis of the spine. This just shows you can do anything if you want it bad enough.”

Lorelle would like to challenge herself and take her recent success further by competing overseas.

“This is something I never thought possible for me, especially at my age, but I have worked so hard for so long and feel I could now take it to the next level,” she said.

Lorelle is seeking sponsorship to help her with the cost of travelling and competing further either in Australia or overseas this year or next year. Funds raised would go towards accommodation, car hire, hair, tan, make-up and bikini.

If you would like to get on board and help Lorelle out or if you would like to organise a complimentary consultation to discuss your fitness goals or personal training sessions, please phone her on 0427 134 107.

Som’s Dream a Reality

“This happened with support from the Cairns community,” Som said.

Som Tamang’s brother Amber was among 9000 people killed in Nepal during the earthquakes in 2015.

Amber was the President of Batase School and the head of Som’s humanitarian organisation, Friends of Himalayan Children. Both the children’s hostel and the school in Batase Village were destroyed in the earthquakes.

Som visited Batase recently to mark the ninth anniversary of the earthquake and also to visit his sick father.

Unfortunately while on a trek in Nepal, his cousin Bijay passed away. Bijay was a ‘shining light’ of the community, a trekking guide for Take on Nepal and a carer for children living at the hostel.

In amongst the sadness, one positive thing Som loves doing is visiting the hostel and the school, that have now been completely rebuilt since the earthquakes.

The standard of education has improved significantly thanks to Som’s efforts through Friends of Himalayan Children. Children used to finish school at grade five, they now continue their education until grade 10.

“This happened with support from the Cairns community,” Som said.

“I would not have been able to rebuild the children’s hostel following the earthquake and continue the education of children in my village without the support from Cairns residents.

“I really want to say thank you and show my gratitude to the community.”

While in Nepal, Som also shared his recently published biography, Himalayan Dreams, penned by Cairns journalist Kirsty Nancarrow.

“I first interviewed Som in Cairns for the ABC in 2015 when he was mounting the first of many aid

missions back to Nepal to help Batase and other remote villages that were left without food, shelter and power after the disaster,” Kirsty said.

“Having reported on many natural disasters, I knew the impact would be long term, so I volunteered for a month in Som’s village, teaching in the makeshift Batase School in late 2016.”

Kirsty was inspired to write Som’s biography and she returned to Nepal at the end of 2018 to gather interviews for the book.

“Som escaped from slavery as a child and knew the power of education to change lives,” she said.

“He helped save a generation in his village from human trafficking and child marriage.”

Som had envisioned a biography for many years, so he is proud his dream has become a reality.

“I would like readers to see that there is light at the end of the tunnel,” he said. “Continue what you want to do and you will get there in a matter of time.

“If you have a good cause you need to keep going. Dream big and it will become a reality. You need to stay strong and have good people around you.”

* Kirsty and Som will be guest speakers at the Forum for Business Growth Lunch at Ochre on Friday, July 26 at 11.30am - visit www.f4bg.com.au. An author talk with Som and Kirsty will be held at the Cairns City Library on Friday, August 2 at 10.30am

* The book is available from Himalayan Dreams in The Pier or through www. kirstynancarrow.com.

* Tax deductible donations can be made to help complete Grades 11 and 12 via https:// donations.rawcs.com.au/28-2023-24
