Christmas in Cairns SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO? MORENE RUMBLE ASTUTE FINANCIAL
This year, I’ll be off to the Gold Coast for Christmas to spend time with family. As we all live in different parts of the country we use this time of year to stay connected which is so important to us. Family is everything to me. Last year it was Christmas in Cairns and who
knows where next year will take us, a new destination perhaps? Keeping with the festive season tradition, I will be over indulging in all things food, drink and sleep, with the occasional swim and walk thrown in for good measure.
BEC & DALE JACKLEY JACKLEY’S BAKEHOUSE
We are Cairns locals and love it here, but being small business owners we can’t pass up the opportunity for a quick getaway while the shops are closed. We are heading to Port Douglas this year with the kids – close enough to get there and back quickly, yet far enough away to feel like a mini holiday! We have the
best getaway spots in our own backyard here in Far North Queensland, and it’s great being able to escape so easily and still only be a short drive from home. We have family in Cairns, so most years we choose to hang around, but every so often it’s good to shake it up!

Cairns for sure!! Thousands of people visit Cairns at Christmas because it’s a great place to relax with family and friends, so why would I go anywhere else?! We usually get the family to stay over at our house on Christmas Eve, so we can enjoy watching our granddaughters open their presents on Christmas morning. I love cooking and go all out at Christmas,
sourcing our best local produce like prawns, mangos and lychees and I make my famous ham baked in bread dough in between swims in the pool! For us, it’s really about spending time with the family, and there’s no place I’d rather be than in our own home in this beautiful city; eating and drinking and making memories.

LIFE Grumpy Mum
CHRISTMAS CRAZY MICHE L L E S TA CPOOL E
As we rapidly approach the end of yet another year, I find myself teetering in that space between the need to keep it together to get the family through the last couple of tiresome weeks of our insanely busy schedule, and my desire to lay on a chaise in the sun drinking margaritas while watching pods of dolphins swim by. I feel like I’m currently in no-mans land. That zone where you are desperately clawing through mud, digging deep to find the energy to keep going, knowing the glorious end is in sight. So what is it about this time of year that sends me a little bit loopy? Aside from the fact that I’m bloody exhausted, there is something about the “silly season” that brings my hot mess mum to the forefront. When it comes to releasing my Christmas crazy, there’s a few things I’ve discovered that have the ability to tip me right over the edge. 1. Letting the kids decorate the tree. I don’t know what it is, but watching a five year old put Christmas baubles on the tree makes my left eye twitch. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that their sense of style is influenced by talking trains and primary colours, while their idea of aesthetics is to group decorations together according size. Every year I have to quieten my inner Shaynna Blaze and allow them to express their creativity….
and then discreetly adjust it all when they’re not looking. 2. Attempting online shopping One glorious year when I was on maternity leave, I did all my shopping online in October (yes, October), and sat gloating in the weeks leading up to Christmas about how organized I was. Every year since, karma has kicked my butt. Not only do I not seem to be able to find the time to sit online for hours to source bargains, but on the rare occasion that I do find something suitable, I always seem to be unable to get the right size/ colour/shape/free delivery option. 3. Christmas catch-up’s Around this time of year I start to panic about all the people who I have been meaning to connect with over the past six months but haven’t been able to for one reason or another. So I begin this mad rush to book up our family calendar with drinks, play dates, lunches, coffee, etc until there is literally no free space, and my kids start whining, “Do we haaaave to go out today?” Is it any wonder we’re exhausted! So if you see me flapping around in a maddened rush on Christmas Eve, it’s ok. I’ll find my inner calm after Santa’s been and gone. It’ll be sometime in that space between Christmas and New Year’s Eve when I’ve got no idea what day it is, where I am or who I’m supposed to be with. michelle@cairnslifemag.com.au

Richie BATES WORDS BY SUZY GRINTER PHOTO BY BEV WILSON
“I’m a member of the Cairns Cycling Club, but I’ve been involved in sporting clubs wherever I’ve lived; Melbourne, Townsville, Alice Springs, Cairns, always participating on the committee, or as a coach or a referee. You can’t help but end up in a leadership role when you take an interest, and that’s probably why I ran for Council. “I lived in Yorkeys Knob for quite a few years and was on the residents’ association there. I enjoy representing people, trying to achieve good outcomes for them. I feel very comfortable in that role, so when it was suggested I run for Council, I thought it I’d give it a go. “My parents were very interested in politics; current affairs were always a subject for discussion at the dinner table, and as kids, we were encouraged to participate,” says Richie.
“
Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race.” HG Wells said, but it could just as easily have come from Richie Bates, Cairns Regional Councillor for Division 5, and an avid cyclist to boot.
people and get an excellent feel for what’s going on in the community. There was a powerful message for me in the number of people alone and lonely, or having mobility difficulties. “A special memory was knocking on the door of a high set Queenslander during November. An elderly lady with mobility problems opened the door. She said enthusiastically, “I’m so glad you’re here”, and I was momentarily delighted she recognised me. “Could you help me put up the string for my Christmas cards?”. “I had to laugh at myself. She wasn’t at all interested in who I was, but we did end up having a great chat about Council while I set about my allotted task,” laughs Richie.
Richie ran on the Val Schier team in 2008.
I was disappointed briefly when I didn’t get in to Council, but it was one of those things you look back on and feel immensely pleased you did.
“Even though I didn’t win, I came out of it thinking it had been a worthwhile and rewarding experience. There were challenges, but also opportunities for personal growth.
In 2011, Richie hadn’t given much thought to running again, but when Bob Manning asked him to run with his team, he welcomed the diversity in the Unity team’s politics.
“I knocked on every door in my Division. It took six months, and was a real eye opener. You meet so many

And it’s working – we’re seeing projects implemented all over the region and sound financial management underpins everything we’ve done,” says Richie. Cycling keeps Richie fit and on the ball, ready to face the pressures of a working day. “Cycling’s becoming a huge phenomenon in Cairns. There’s more cyclists per capita here than anywhere else in the State. “Governments at all levels are supportive, investing in development of facilities in recognition of the benefits to health, and as a congestion-easing transport solution. Gabby, Richie’s partner, was born in Holland, where children learn to ride a bike almost before they learn to walk and cycling is the transport mode of choice. “She always loved cycling, so it wasn’t long after we met that she started joining me. She’s been racing ever since. I’ve created a monster,” laughs Richie. “You mean, Gabby beats you in the triathlons?” I asked. I can’t be sure, but I think Richie answered, “On yer bike, Suzy”.

Seventeen years later someone came to Cairns to give Buddhist teachings and my intuition told me I had to go. That was it
”
Long before she became a Buddhist nun, Marise was a masseuse par excellence on the northern beaches of Cairns, a divorced mum with kids to raise and regular clothes. Ordained in Nepal by the late His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche in March 2001, Venerable Rinchen is the resident nun and coordinator of Cairns Buddhist Centre. Marise no longer exists. Sitting cross legged on the floor, Rinchen is dressed in maroon and bright orange robes and a huge smile I remember so well. She looks no different to eighteen years ago, but she’s an entirely different person. “As a child, and throughout my youth, I wanted to understand the world, and I couldn’t. From the age of 7 or 8, I wanted to be a missionary, but my family was not religious, and didn’t encourage such thoughts. “I was drawn to Catholicism with all its statues and icons, and later to spiritualism, mixing with mediums and psychics, in a world of crystals and auras. My life was peppered with magic and spirits, witches and fairies. “Then I got married, had children, and tried to become something of
a normal person. Marriage and motherhood didn’t leave much space for spiritual practice, but I still maintained and nurtured my interest in astrology and studied herbal medicine for years,” said Rinchen. A traumatic life event saw Rinchen end up at Chenrezig, a Buddhist Centre near Eudlo, triggering a sensation of past life memory.
“Nowadays, I teach meditation and relaxation, supporting the Palliative Care Team in Gordonvale, the Cardiac Rehab team and the Heart Failure Clinic as a volunteer. We have a wellbeing group here that is connected to the oncology unit and we are trying to expand so people with chronic illness can come and learn relaxation and meditation,” says Rinchen.
“Seventeen years later someone came to Cairns to give Buddhist teachings and my intuition told me I had to go. That was it,” Rinchen says.
“I’m often called to Cairns Hospital or the Palliative Care Service in Gordonvale for help if they have a patient who is facing death and frightened.
When Rinchen returned from Nepal in 2001 as an ordained nun, she still had to massage to earn a living, because nuns are not funded in the west.
“I don’t necessarily come to them from a Buddhist perspective, it’s about compassion and how to help them find some peace. But Buddhism has given me a greater depth of understanding, and a context to put it in, so I try to take that wisdom to make the person feel calmer.
“Death has always intrigued me and Buddhism changes one’s perception of death in a positive way. Having met up with Dorothy Risdale from Melbourne, who had a small volunteer group working in palliative care. I felt I would like to get involved in palliative care. I became a volunteer, and when Dorothy retired, I took over her role, and we became Maitreya Hospice Care Inc., operating for ten years, until funding ran out in 2010.
CairnsLife 17 Magazine
“On a lighter note, when someone’s dying, they lose all their wrinkles. They look like they did in their youth, as if all their cares and tribulations are fading away,” says Rinchen. I found this in itself, quite comforting.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK M AYO R B O B MANNI NG
With 2016 drawing to a close, it is timely to reflect on the past 12 months and what we have achieved as a Council and as a community. Pleasingly, this year has been all about delivery – the completion of a host of community-based projects and the realisation of two signature projects which have added to the liveability of our city and the wellbeing of its citizens. The opening of the re-developed Munro Martin Parklands stands out as a highlight for me because this new community space is a key element in our evolving cultural fabric, and furthers our objective to be the arts and cultural capital of the North. I’m extremely proud of what we have achieved. Not only have we created an amazing tropical parkland that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors year round, but an outdoor performance space that, in 18 months’ time, will be complemented by the opening of the new Cairns Performing Arts Centre which is currently under construction. The other signature project opened this year is the re-developed Tobruk Memorial Pool – a project that had been crying out for action for many years, and now provides this community with a Fina accredited 50 metre, competitionstandard pool in a state-of-the-art complex. It was an honour to officially open this wonderful facility with Victoria Cross recipient Corporal Ben Roberts-Smith, and Rat of Tobruk Henry Tranter, and to see the community enjoy their first experience at the new pool. In the suburbs, we have completed a number of projects to improve sporting and recreational facilities (Walker Road Sporting Precinct, the Martyn Street netball facility, Alley Park); residents are seeing new infrastructure such as footpaths and kerb and channelling being delivered as part of our expanded
CairnsLife 18 Magazine
($6 million) Suburban Enhancement Program and we continue to roll out our cycleway and pathway program such as the Freshwater to Redlynch cycle connection, the long-awaited 920-metre path along Stoney Creek Road, and the commencement of the Mann Street cycleway. We have achieved what we set out to do this year and much more, and all without placing undue burden upon our ratepayers, as was demonstrated when we brought down a modest 1.5% rise in rates as part of a balanced budget that also featured a record capital works program of $178.5 million. Just a few weeks ago, Council received a report which highlighted that out of the $330 million the organisation spends each year, 91 per cent was spent in the local area through materials, services and employment. Council spent $199 million on locally purchased goods and services, including materials and local contractors for the extensive capital works program. The report shows that 10.8 jobs are created for every $1 million Council spends. In total, it’s estimated that 3244 people were employed in Cairns as a result of Council spending. That’s good news to my ears. This year has been a positive and productive one. We have achieved much and kept our promises. I am just as buoyed for 2017, particularly to see some of the private commercial developments start to take shape – the much-anticipated Cairns Aquarium will open its doors, the extensive upgrade by the Ghassan Group to Rydges Tradewinds will start, and Nova City will start to transform our CBD, giving confidence to others to invest in Cairns. May your festive season by happy and safe, and may we all share in a prosperous new year.

Your barking questions answered Barking dogs are a constant source of irritation in our neighbourhoods but many dog owners aren’t aware their pet is causing a nuisance because their pooch mainly barks when they are away from home. Council recently ran a barking workshop to give dog owners some ideas to help address problem barking. Here are some of the questions (and answers) that came up. If you want to watch the session, it’s available on our Facebook page or website. What is the biggest mistake dog owners make in terms of barking? Many people inadvertently “teach” their dog to bark. Dogs bark to get your attention and don’t necessarily distinguish between good attention and bad attention. If your dog is barking in the backyard, for example, and you go outside and yell at him, you are “rewarding” the bad behaviour and the next time he wants attention he will bark. It’s therefore really important to work with your dog so he understands when he is being reprimanded. The first step is identifying why your dog is barking. Is he barking to get attention? Is there someone or another animal moving past your property? Is there something unusual in your yard or the next door neighbours? Are other dogs barking? Once you know the reason for the barking you can associate unwanted behaviour with a clear reprimand and then start working on changing the behaviour. If you address problem behaviour as soon as possible you can prevent a habit forming that is much harder to break.
I’m thinking about getting a new dog, what steps should I take to avoid barking problems? When a new dog comes into the household, everyone is excited and the pooch gets lots of attention. Dogs then come to expect the same level of interaction, and if they don’t get it they will let you know the only what they can - by barking. Rather than creating a situation that you then have to undo, get your pooch into your family’s routine as quickly as possible. This should include “alone” time, so your dog learns it’s ok to be at home without constant attention. Failing to do this can lead to anxiety. An anxious dog will bark out of fear of being left alone, both when you are at home and especially when you leave the house. With a good routine and practice at being alone, your pet will be much happier and better equipped to cope when left to his own devices.
Does walking my dog daily really stop him barking? Exercise is crucial. Outside your fence everything is new and exciting. Your pooch will see, hear and smell new things. This extra stimulation will help wear him out mentally and the walk or run will tire him out physically. Taking your pet to a dog off-leash area is a great option as your pooch can burn off some energy and socialise with other dogs. Dog owners should also consider obedience training. This not only ensures your dog is well behaved out in the community it can also assist in discouraging barking at home. When added to your daily exercise routine, some simple obedience commands will ensure your dog is “working” every day.
I’ve tried all kinds of tips and tricks but none of them work. What can I do? You can’t teach your dog not to bark in a couple of hours. One of the biggest mistakes dog owners make is to abandon a really sensible, training approach because it doesn’t “work” in a couple of days. You need to be consistent and persistent. For instance, if your dog barks whenever you leave the house, make a concerted effort not to reward the barking by talking to him or patting him. Be calm, leave the house and close the door. Do this consistently and your dog will realise he won’t get your attention and consequently change his behaviour. But if you cave in just once, you will undo all your hard work and need to start from the beginning.
Should I use a barking collar? There are three kinds of barking collars - sound collars that emit and a high-pitched sound, electronic collars that deliver an electric shock, and citronella collars that spray scent onto the dog’s face. The RSPCA is opposed to all of these collars as they inflict pain, involve punishment and can be used to abused animals. If your dog is not responding to barking training it’s good to talk to a dog behaviourist who can help you determine why your dog barks and how to address it.

Passion and planning joined performance to create the highly successful motorcycle retail business that has grown from a small wrecker’s yard to two huge retail outlets, the envy of dealers around the State.
“But it’s time we retired, and hit the road. I think we’ve earned it,” says Wayne.
Wayne and wife Rhonda are both ardent motorcyclists, and it seems, living the dream has worked well for them, and their family and team of dedicated staff over the past 32 years in business in Cairns. “Times might be tough, but we’re doing well. We’ve got a really good business here, long
Both businesses are about to go on the market; the long established 1500 sq.m. retail outlet and workshop in Water Street and the newer Harley Davidson shop in Sheridan Street. “We’ve built the business over 32 years, the location’s good, and although we’re probably leaving at a time when Cairns is going into a growth surge, it’s time for us to bear the fruits of our labour. Our loss is someone else’s gain, as they say.

“We bought a tiny wrecking business, doubling turnover in the first year, going from strength to strength and taking on new franchises over time. So now we have Suzuki, Triumph and KTM here, and Harley Davidson moved to our other shop opened three years ago. The 1500 sq.m. warehouse is probably bigger than anything similar in regional Queensland and houses a fully equipped service workshop. It boasts one of the biggest ranges of helmets in the State and a huge range of clothing, accessories and tyres, at very competitive prices. “Living above the business was great for us, and the proximity to work and the city centre makes life so easy.
“Both our boys lived here at the shop for over 20 years, and have worked in here for a long time, so they’re ready to try something new now. I’m quite pleased, as we won’t be drawn back into the business,” Wayne laughs. “It’s an exciting time to be going into business in Cairns with cranes on the horizon, development happening all around and plenty of foreign investors showing interest,” says Wayne. “We’re so lucky here in Cairns – we’ve got such good roads. Rhonda and I did a lovely trip around the beautiful Tablelands and out to Innot Hot Springs last weekend; a taster for what’s to come with retirement,” says Wayne.

ARTS CENTRE
THE LIVING END Successful rock bands that first emerge on to the music scene generally make their mark across the soundwaves with loud, statement songs that turn into classic anthems sung with full force at pubs and backyard parties for years to come. Australian punk rock legends The Living End are one of these bands, and after a five-year break the trio are back with a brand new album. Shift is the band’s seventh studio album and was released in March this year, which saw them embark on a massive US and Australian tour. Old fans will remember the fast, loud, statement anthems like Second Solution/Prisoner of Society, West End Riot and All Torn Down from their 1998 self-titled debut album. A noticeable ‘shift’ in their sound came about with the release of their second studio album Roll On (2001). Whist still punk rock in nature with their signature fast loud style, hit singles Roll On and Pictures in the Mirror had a more polished feel, and now sixteen years on their latest album Shift is their most mature record yet. “You just get to a stage where you want to try different stuff,” explains Cheney. “It’s natural as a musician and as a writer. We all knew this would be a stronger album if we could show restraint rather than rage on some of the tracks.”
THE LIVING END STARING DOWN THE HIGHWAY TOUR
THURSDAY 23 MARCH These icons of Australian rock are staring down the highway to a new regional tour and the Tanks is set to go off. 2016 will be a year to remember for these longstanding rock kings. Headlining festivals around the country and scoring nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Australian Live Act at the ARIA Awards, they’ve reclaimed their throne after a five-year hiatus. Since forming at high school and busking the streets of Melbourne, The Living End has topped the singles charts, scored four platinum albums, been awarded APRA’s Australian Song of the Year and have been awarded six ARIAs. They’ve played world tours, ute musters and every festival everywhere. Don’t miss these rulers of psychobilly sounds. Be quick, this will sell out. Triple j faves The Bennies are the official support act on The Living End’s regional tour.

Their album’s first single Keep On Running featured as the theme song to the Channel 7 AFL Finals campaign, and the band shared the stage with Sting during the 2016 AFL Grand Final. Spurred on by such successes, the band announced an extensive regional tour Staring Down The Highway, stopping in at sixteen locations including the Tanks Arts Centre in March 2017. “We always make a point to get out to the regional areas every time we’re on the touring cycle of a record. The Living End was always a live band, first and foremost; writing and recording was secondary. We have an incredibly loyal live following and we want to tour everywhere.” It’ll be the boys first time playing at the Tanks Arts Centre, and a return back to the tropical far north is welcomed by Cheney who has been playing sold out shows across the US in much chillier climates. “I’m looking forward to wearing shorts, getting some warm rays and drinking a cold Aussie beer,” Cheney says. I’m also expecting maximum enthusiasm from the good people of Cairns.” With triple j faves The Bennies supporting them on their regional tour, both new and old fans of these iconic punk rockers can expect a good mix of new & favourite tunes. “The advantage of having seven records is that we have a lot of material to draw from,” explains Cheney. “We obviously have our staple songs that have had lots of airplay, but to be honest some of the tunes off Shift have been the best received. We go out on a limb every night to not play the same show as the night before; this is something I’m proud of. We don’t play it safe onstage; the wheels could come off at any moment. That’s how a rock ‘n’ roll gig should be - live!!!” Catch The Living End when they hit Tanks Arts Centre on 23rd March 2017. Tickets available through ticketLINK. While the Face of Cairns Central has been helping discover local models for eight years, this year’s competition was the most significant in the history of the event. It was the first time a male model was in the winner’s circle, a supermodel joined in the event and half the senior finalists were indigenous. There were also a record number of entries this year (130), and it was also the first time the competition included a category for children aged five to eight. Supermodel Samantha Harris, one of the most influential indigenous models in Australia, joined in the event, which saw indigenous model Jarron Andy, 23, win the Autumn/Winter Face of Cairns Central and 15-yearold Lily Rose named the Spring/Summer winner. Ava Harper was the mini winner
(ages five-eight) and MauiCarpenter-Reed the junior winner (ages 9-12). “I loved being in Cairns to be a judge this year,” Samantha said. “The event was amazing and very well planned. It was also so refreshing to see so many indigenous models in the model search – it made me very proud to see these kids getting out there and having a go.” Cairns Central Centre Manager Christie-Lee Jackson said the centre was thrilled to have had Samantha’s support and to have had such a huge indigenous participation. The centre collaborated with Cairns Indigenous Art Fair in the lead-up to the program to encourage indigenous participation, which resulted in half the senior finalists being indigenous.

“The competition provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for aspiring Cairns locals to gain modelling and fashion industry experience from some of the most influential figures in Australian fashion,” Ms Jackson said. “Fashion is at the heart of what we do here at Cairns Central, so we love launching a talented local who shares our passion into the world of modeling.” Lily won a 12-month contract with CHIC management, which manages the careers of some of the world’s leading names in modelling such as Alyssa Sutherland, Catherine McNeil and Samantha Harris. “Lily was an immediate standout with her statuesque appearance and confidence on the runway,” said Robert Hannan, senior agent at
CHIC management who was also a judge at the event. “We look forward to supporting Lily throughout her development, watching her go from strength to strength, developing a unique look that will see her move on to the international modelling scene.” Jarron won a 12-month contract with Dally Models in Brisbane, which has been involved in the event since its inception. “Jarron is the first indigenous male model to be signed by Dallys,” said Dallys’ agent Thomas Sidey. “He’s talented, has that real typical Aussie bloke look and the fact that he has an indigenous heritage is something none of the other guys have. He’s a trailblazer, and he’ll be sure to inspire other indigenous male models.”

Lovers of high-quality jewellery know there is one long-standing and trustworthy business in Cairns that is renowned for supplying the city with some of the world’s best jewellery – Evert Fine Jewellery. Evert’s, which specialises in opal, diamond and fine jewellery, has been providing exceptional jewellery to locals and visitors for 26 years. The locally owned business is also well known for its unique designs, outstanding industry knowledge and excellent customer service. The family-owned business has more than 55 years’ experience in the jewellery industry. It started from humble beginnings in the small country town of Winton in central Queensland when Vince Evert Senior mined Queensland Boulder Opal and had the vision and passion to bring this unique opal to the world. He pioneered the mining and cutting techniques of this rare gem and showcased it throughout the world before opening a local retail store with his daughter Mary and her husband Joe Mohun in 1990 at 26 Abbott Street, which is still showcasing this product today. Along with the highly-prized Boulder Opal, the shop also has a huge range opals from throughout the country

and an enormous selection of high-quality jewellery brands. Evert has recently partnered with the international jewellery giant Swarowski to open an exclusive Swarovski Boutique alongside its retail store on 63 Abbott Street (opposite DFS). It also has a store in Port Douglas. The local jewellers have been showcasing Swarovski for 10 years and the recent opening of the Swarovski Boutique is a huge coup for Cairns as it’s the first boutique outlet Swarovski has opened outside a major city. Described as a “beautiful crystal paradise”, the exciting new boutique has been welcomed with open arms by locals and visitors who consider it to be a must-see shop, especially now when looking for perfect Christmas presents. To celebrate the opening, Swarovski Boutique is giving everyone who visits the store the opportunity to enter a draw to win a New Year’s Eve stay in the heart of the city at the newly renovated Abbott Boutique hotel. THIS TIME OF YEAR IS BUSY - THERE IS A BUZZ OF HOLIDAYS IN THE AIR. SAR A H & D A R R E N AL CO R N
As you dream of the holidays and a break from the routine, your loyal fourlegged friend is gazing up at you, almost reading your mind and ever hopeful that they will be included in the trip! Guilt sets in, as you want a holiday but it is hard to leave your best fur mate behind. Many people are discovering the joys of taking their furry friends with them on holidays. Whether staying with family or in one of the huge range of pet-friendly accommodation options, owners can share their holiday fun with their fourlegged mates. And if your holiday is a bit bigger than a road trip – air travel for your pet is an easy option. There are a few questions people often ask about their pets travelling by air: Will my pet travel along side of me? Animals (except for qualified service dogs) travel in a temperature and pressure controlled cargo cabin of the plane. Your pet will need to travel in an airline approved crate. For the right fit, it should be large enough for your pet to lie down comfortably, turn around and stand freely with good ventilation on each side. Crates must be IATA approved, safe, comfortable and durable. There are crates for all shapes and sizes that are available for either hire or purchase.
Sarah & Darren A lc o r n a r e th e Owne rs o f Do g t ai ne r s C a ir n s .
Can I give my pet a treat before they fly? To avoid travel sickness, it is recommended you allow them plenty of water prior to their departure but please don’t feed your pet for at least eight hours before their travel time. Your pet will also have access to water on the flight. Do I have to sedate my pet to travel? Preferably not. The latest studies show that sedation causes far more trouble than it is worth.
Can my pet’s favourite toy or blanket travel with them? Your pet can take their favourite blanket or a small soft toy in the travel crate with them – it helps to create a sense of security for your pet during travel. How long before take-off do I need to have my pet at the airport? Most airports servicing domestic flights require pets to be at the airport 90 – 120 minutes before departure. What happens after the flight? Pets are the first cargo off the plane. Depending on the service you have chosen, you can collect your pet yourself or the pet will be delivered to you at a specified time and date. All airports vary in their collection points, so check with us when you make your booking. Once you’ve chosen the right holiday destination for you and your pet, it’s time to start considering anything special you’ll need to do to prepare your pet for the trip. Here are our top tips for travelling by air with your pet! • Your pet must be medically fit to travel. If you are uncertain of your pet’s health, then a veterinary examination is recommended. Ask your vet to recommend a vet in the destination you are heading to. • Ensure your pet has an ID tag with a number where you can be reached while you’re away. This may mean getting a new tag done with your mobile phone number on it. • Be sure to pack some comfort items from home for your pet, whether they are cuddly toys or special blankets. • Pack a copy of vaccination certificates and other medical records, any medications your pet is currently on, leashes, harnesses, towels/poo-bags and grooming equipment if you think it will be needed.
Need help to get started on a plan? At Dogtainers Cairns, pet transport is what we do all day every day, our expertise is second to none. We can coordinate a specialised plan to suit any animal travelling to any destination around Australia or the world. Our aim is to arrange a fuss-free travel plan so that you and your pet can enjoy the holiday you’ve dreamed of.

Every 5 or 6 months something changes here The ever-changing stalls of the Cairns Night Markets have been the social hub for many Cairns locals for 18 years. A vibrant, fast-paced atmosphere filled with delicious smells, friendly faces and plenty more to offer, the Cairns Night Markets has a wondrous reputation for being the place to go for all your after-dark food needs, some light shopping and, of course, the well-known massages. For the past 8 years since taking over, Mark Stanley has worked hard at ensuring the Cairns Night Markets meet their internationally recognised reputation. His dedication has resulted in an average 2.5 million in foot traffic each year, making Cairns Night Markets the buzzing attraction that we see today. “Every 5 or 6 months something changes here,” Mark explained, adding that “local products or perhaps even produce is the future.”

Mark envisions the markets focusing primarily on locally owned, handmade stores in future. He encourages anyone thinking of opening a business to consider leasing a stall by accessing their website. With his vision, he hopes to see more locals selling their handmade wares throughout the markets. With a low vacancy rate, it is advisable to book ahead. At the time of publishing only 2 of the 131 lots were vacant.

The Cairns Night Markets are almost ready to launch their Chinese website, ensuring that independent travellers don’t miss the opportunity to experience the sights, smells and shops. Mark has a strong desire to draw more tourists into the markets, giving local stallholders more traffic and travellers something to write home about. The best aspect of the markets, Mark says, is the “dinner and dessert”. He says this is the most popular attraction at the markets and often is a starting point for many on a night out. Being right on The Esplanade, the markets are a prime location and the hours of operation add something rich to the nightlife of Cairns.

Mark claims that between 6:30pm and 8pm the markets are bustling at their busiest peak. This is the most common time customers come down and grab a bite to eat while browsing the stalls What Cairns Night Markets have to offer is not only something unique, but something ever-changing. While today the markets offer psychic readings, indigenous crafts and natural healing among numerous other exciting stalls, next month may tell a very different story. CELLARDOOR

“The Montessori approach is internationally acclaimed and part of the educational landscape at Tropical North Learning Academy at Trinity Beach State School” explained the principal of the school, Matthew Denzin. “It offers a specially designed learning environment that is filled with wonderful materials that will interest young children and encourage their independent exploration and discovery.” Over the last two years an emerging Montessori community has begun to take hold on the Northern Beaches with the thriving Meriba Montessori Infant and Toddler programs engaging parents and children from 0-3 years of age five mornings a week. From 2017 students entering into Prep will now be eligible to enrol in a Montessori 3-6 classroom – a first for Cairns and the Far North Queensland Region!!” The program will operate within the same timeframes as a traditional school, five days a week. The comprehensive program is based on five key learning areas: practical life, sensorial, language, maths and cultural studies and is aligned with the Australian education curriculum. The Montessori Early Years program is based on the understanding that children have a natural love of learning. The program recognizes that the early years of life are the cornerstone of learning when a child develops fundamental CairnsLife 58 Magazine

skills that enable them to thrive and become caring, confident and independent young people. With the understanding of each unique child in mind, the various learning environments - including the classroom, the veranda and the garden - are designed for much growth in independence by allowing learning to occur at every child’s individual pace through creative ‘play’ and specifically designed activities and tools to experiment with and engage their senses. Older children within the group are mentors to aspire to and learn from and the specially trained teacher’s role is to guide the child’s ‘mind in its work of development’ and trust the children’s own individual limits.

HEAD CHEF DAN’S NEW SPIN
AT TRINITY BEACH TAVERN W O RDS B Y N A R E L L E D E J ON G When he’s not chasing cyclones, Head Chef Daniel Gliddon is busy cooking up a storm in the kitchen at Trinity Beach Tavern. And he couldn’t be much happier! With that stunning blue ocean view, a friendly, skilled team, and a new menu to put his tantalising spin on - there’s not much to complain about! Trinity Beach Tavern Manager Steve Searles has made a wise move appointing Dan as Head Chef with his list of impressive credentials, including Sous Chef at the ‘Waterbar & Grill Steakhouse’ and many memorable years with ‘Donninis Ciao Italia’ restaurant. He is a life-long local with the knowledge and skills to serve up quality local seafood with tropical flavours, as well as succulent chargrilled steaks and the much loved classic pub meals to fulfil the appetites of all local families and tourists. “I’m putting my final touches on the Tavern’s new summer menu at the moment which will be available soon”, Dan said. “I’m looking at adding a zesty quinoa salad to our Atlantic Salmon and a Pulled Pork Burger for the lunchtime crowd.” Dan wouldn’t get much time to kick back and enjoy his love of sports or tracking down cyclones with how busy this popular tavern can get! With over 250 meals served many nights that’s plenty of well fed patrons coming back often and spreading the word. Brekkies are also popular on Sunday mornings with hearty dishes such as Tuscan poached eggs on crusty sour dough, as well as Corn and Zucchini Fritters and scrumptious pancakes. “Lunch times are getting even busier with more workers in the area enjoying our great options.” They are spoilt for choice with delicious dishes such as fresh fish and chips, Vietnamese green pawpaw salad and scrumptious burgers including the Trinity Chicken Ciabatta, and soon the tangy Pulled Pork burger to tempt all! What better way to spend a summer afternoon with friends chilling out on the spacious balcony overlooking this idyllic beachfront while savouring a tasty delight from Dan and team with a cold beer or cocktail? Or maybe an evening meal with the family in air conditioning with the kids kept happily entertained in the Kid’s Zone? No doubt all locals look forward to enjoying ‘Dan the Man’s’ spin on this family Tavern’s menu while relaxing and dining out the ‘Trinity Beach lifestyle way’.

The focus of these balances is the endocrine glands which are all connected to each other. Rather than addressing only the gland/s directly involved in your issue, Kinesiology aims to find and resolve all hormonal pathways contributing to your problems. Stress affects endocrine glands such as the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, adrenals and pancreas. Kinesiology can balance the endocrine system and help keep your hormone levels stable and restoring the balance. It can access and resolve emotional, mental and physiological stresses involved in your issue. If you follow the treatment schedule all areas that are contributing to your physical symptoms can be addressed. You could find yourself sleeping well and waking up refreshed.

STAYING ON TRACK OVER THE SUMMER HOLIDAY SEASON JAN I NE NO O P ETCH
Can you believe it? We are at that time of year again where we are all busy winding up the year and attending frequent social occasions. Now is as important as ever to keep up your fitness and wellness routine. It is very easy to slip into, “I will do it in the New Year” or “when then kids go back to school” However you can stay on track during this crazy time of year. Our Tips: Schedule your workout sessions into your diary ahead of time and don’t book any appointments into those timeslots. You are more likely to attend sessions booked and paid for than if you just attend casually. Join a great encouraging studio. If your friends won’t come with you, buddy up with someone at the studio. Get their mobile number and text each other if either one doesn’t show up to class. Some of us are not early risers but exercising early is really a fantastic time to workout. You will feel motivated and kick-start your metabolism. Try an early class, we live in such a beautiful region, rising early is also great for your mind. Going Away? Get yourself up ½ hour earlier you can still have a lie in if you feel like you need a rest from the daily routine rush, but get up 30mins earlier and go for a 20-30min brisk walk. Walking is a great way to clear the mind and enjoy the change in surroundings, alternatively find a studio in your holiday destination. Social Occasions Eat before you go- will be less likely to eat excess unhealthy food, or take a plate of healthy filling food yourself to share with everyone. If you have a blowout – that’s ok! Just get back on track at the next meal. Preparation is the key – Plan your weekly meals and shop accordingly.
Junk Food – If you DON’T buy it – you are not going to eat it! So just leave it out of the shopping trolley! How can Pilates Help you? Pilates is such an amazing modality. Pilates develops many aspects of physical tness including: Coordination, Strength, Agility and Endurance.
• You will learn muscle control and correct muscle activation • Improve balance and proprioception • Low impact, so is safe for all ages and levels of fitness • Focus on breathing techniques which in turn promotes relaxation and tension release • Fantastic for rehabilitating injuries • Improving Posture and body alignment • Helping to keep bone structure and musculature in the best possible state • Pilates also distributes the body mass – you will lengthen and lean out • Pilates is used as a cross training tool for top-level athletes • Pilates is very deceiving, it looks so easy to an outsider, however Pilates practitioners will tell you that is not the case. You will sweat but the wonderful thing is you are not hammering your body. You are working your body completely from head to toe in a balanced and harmonious way • Pilates is also a great de-stresser! If you haven’t already started your Pilates journey, now is a fantastic time especially if you have time off from work. “The gift of hearing opens up new worlds of opportunity for most of us but if you live in poverty then it can make a world of difference to the person and their family. Helping people hear better so they can live better is a privilege.” explains Joanna Magee, director of family practice AUDiOHEALTH. As part of the team involved with the Starkey Foundation (whose goal is to fit one million hearing aids in third world countries before the end of the decade), they have recently helped over 700 children to hear better with properly fitted hearing aids. The Foundation has already fitted over one million hearing aids in 100 countries and continues to assist people who would otherwise be unable to afford a hearing device. “Some of the children we fitted heard their own voice for the first time.” Joanna recalls “the squeals of delight and amazement from the children and tears from the parents. Being able to hear opens up the possibility of communication, education and job prospects for the future. The children are able to make a contribution to their family and community. When we don’t hear properly we mis-communicate, mis-hear, misunderstand and become frustrated, tired, depressed and isolated. It has been proven that hearing health is directly connected to overall health and well-being, and people who are able to hear and engage with the world around them live better and healthier lives. Improving your hearing not only helps you, but your family also have a better quality of life. And who wouldn’t want that?! “Certainly the children we helped in the deaf school in Bali wanted to hear - they came in their hundreds. The heat was grueling but watching the children hear and seeing their eyes light up made the trip a joy.” says Joanna, “I have returned rejuvenated, feeling blessed and fortunate to use some of my experience towards this greater good.” You can help make a difference in these young lives by donating any old hearing aids. KEEP THE FAMILY TOGETHER THIS CHRISTMAS ROB I N G O RD O N
R obin G o rd o n i s t he C EO o f C airns Wo men ’s I m a g in g
December is upon us and that means we’re well underway with the countdown to Christmas. No doubt you’re reading this issue on a quick coffee break, with your reading time falling somewhere between planning your next family get together, deciding what to wear for your next festive event, or madly looking for ideas for that all important shopping list for presents. If you’re anything like us, at this time of year personal priorities go out the window, being replaced instead by impromptu get-togethers, reduced sleep and, quite often, overconsumption of yummy but rich foods. Although this is all very fun, while we’re spending this time with family and friends, it’s actually quite important to spare a thought for our health and in particular, to think about the health of our heart. Quite apt for a season that’s associated with affection and love! Heart health is a topic that’s often thought to be a men’s health issue. The common stereotype is of an older, slightly overweight man clutching at his chest and falling over in pain – an image that is perpetuated in movies and popular culture. As a result, women don’t think heart disease is personally relevant to them, but heart disease is in fact an important consideration for women, and the Australian Heart Foundation has proof that’s specific to our region. According to a study completed earlier this year, the Heart Foundation uncovered a concerning trend in the Far North, with heart-related hospital admissions higher in our region than in many other regions across the State of Queensland. But the kicker for women is in the detail – in Cairns itself, these heart-related hospital admissions were found to be considerably higher for women than for men. The study, aptly titled the Heart Foundation Heart Maps, compared Hospital admissions across Australia and when broken-down by Local Government Area (LGA), the results for Cairns were quite telling. For the Cairns LGA, when compared to all heart related hospital admissions in Australia, male patient admissions were ranked 20 out of 87 (with 1 being the worst/highest rate of admissions). In contrast, females were ranked a worrying 10 out of 87 for all heart related hospital admissions in Australia. The findings indicate that in Far North Queensland, the prevalence of heart-related health symptoms are higher in females than in men. The reason for the difference was found to be lifestyle factors, with data indicating
obesity, smoking and physical inactivity as major contributing factors behind the hospital admissions. High cholesterol, poorly controlled diabetes, menopause and depression also played a role. According to the Heart Foundation, heart disease is the single biggest killer of Australian women with women three times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer. This is a staggering figure when you consider the implications. However, a key difference is that many risk factors associated with heart disease can be reduced through positive lifestyle changes. Like men, women can be diagnosed with a range of conditions that include angina, heart attack, heart failure and abnormal heart rhythms. It’s a common belief that women tend to look after themselves better than men but when it comes to heart health, research shows that many women don’t – they often put the needs of others before themselves and fail to commit to the lifestyle changes needed for good health. Family and friends therefore play an important role in supporting women to live well with heart disease. If you’re concerned about one or more risk factors, the important thing to remember is that you can arrange a heart health check-up with your GP, who will help you understand your personal risk factors for developing heart disease. With this information you can take active steps to lower your risk – even while enjoying the festive season. During the check-up process there are several tests that may be recommended by your Doctor to assist in assessing heart health. These include an Echocardiogram (heart ultrasound), Stress Echocardiogram, Computed Tomography Coronary Angiogram (CTCA), Cardiac MRI, a Myocardial Perfusion Study, or even a simple Chest X-ray. If you’re referred for any of these procedures you don’t need to travel south to access the latest equipment and services. All of these tests are performed through our rooms at 121 Sheridan Street. Keep the family together this Christmas by making time for yourself, your health and your body – as well as the people you love – to ensure you have a strong, healthy heart. And whatever you do don’t feel guilty about it! Without good health you won’t enjoy the festivities. Enjoy this special time and remember to stop, breathe, and take a moment to be in the present. Merry Christmas!

SHEARER
CAIRNS HA E M ATOL O G Y & ON CO L O G Y CL I N I C WORDS BY SUZY GRINTER P H O T O B Y S I LV I A M O G O R O V I C H
Dr Andrew Shearer spent 12 years at Cairns Hospital before realising his dream of providing specialist haematology services to prevent patients having to travel south for treatment. Owner of the newly established Cairns Haematology & Oncology Clinic, Andrew helped build the public service at Cairns Hospital, originally working with just one other clinician and a handful of nurses. Dr Shearer continues to work part-time at The Liz Plummer Cancer Care Centre, which opened in 2011, employing approximately 50 staff. “The Centre quickly reached its capacity and we had some patients falling through the gaps, referred to Brisbane or Townsville, away from their families, and returning with big holes in their pockets. “There was no local private service for them to turn to. So, I made the decision to set up a private clinic to address the shortfall. “I could have stayed within the security of the public service, but something needed to be done to address the deficit and enable all patients to receive treatment here in Cairns.
“My wife Meredine and I have strong Christian beliefs, and I’ve always been focused on service rather than my academic career. We considered it a blessing to be able to do something positive to serve the community, and so we decided to branch out and open a haematology and oncology clinic in Cairns. “Driving home one day about two years ago, I saw a place to rent or buy and it seemed like a sign. We decided to bite the bullet and just do it,” says Dr Shearer. The clinic is light, airy and colourful, an uplifting environment where Andrew and two other haematologists and a radiation oncologist diagnose and treat blood related diseases, including cancer. “We do have plans for medical oncology, palliative care and allied health practitioners to join us as we build up our services. Born in Brisbane, Andrew completed his medical studies at the University of Queensland, followed by specialist medical training for oncology and haematology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney and private and public practice in Sydney and regional NSW.
CairnsLife 71 Magazine
Andrew and Meredine met at St. Vincent’s, where Meredine worked as a security officer. “Working with challenging patients, we used to question who was looking after who,” laughs Andrew. “She’s been so supportive all the way, and now works as my very efficient but unpaid Office Manager. Meredine designed the clinic; we wanted a peaceful, calm and healing environment. “It’s been a long process setting up, but seeing people survive life threatening disease, their joy, and that of their families, makes it all worthwhile,” Andrew adds. “Everything is the same here as Brisbane. You don’t have to leave Cairns for haematology treatments except in the case of very rare cancers that require highly specialised treatment. “Anti cancer treatment has changed dramatically, away from the traditional chemotherapy, towards anti neoplastic enzyme and protein inhibitors. For example, for chronic myeloidleukaemia, previous curative treatment was stem cell transplant, but now most patients can just take a tablet,” says Andrew.

Oh Christmas, here you are again, highlighting that we are at the end of yet another year. Another year older, wiser and busier (we hope!). As we will all be inundated with Christmas blogs, many about office parties, I decided instead to tell you a bit about Christmas and New Year when you’re in the hospitality industry. It’s easy to forget the hundreds of people who voluntarily work through the holidays and don’t get to spend it with family. I have no idea how I did it for so long because now, as a mother, I need to be with family at this time of the year. However, when you are young and you love hospitality, it’s what you do. And no, you don’t do it for the money! For those of you not in the ‘know’, hospitality Christmas parties happen usually in January. Yes, January. When it’s all over and no one feels even slightly Christmassy. Most of us are well done with Christmas by then, but typical hospitality workers, we could party like its 1999 no matter the occasion! But let me tell you about Christmas on cruise ships. No matter whether you were cruising or working, everyone was in the same boat (forgive the pun!) and the atmosphere was always festive. Since the majority of our cruisers were from the US and being a US based company we had to say “Happy Holidays” just so we covered as many beliefs as possible. There were always the grinches who loved to come to Guest Relations and complain that there were “too many decorations”, “too much Christmas music” and even one year we had a guest complain that Santa was on board! One of my funniest and most favourite memories is when Santa came onboard in a tender (lifeboat), climbed onboard and walked through the centre of the ship with his bag of goodies. Santa lovers young and old would line up for the opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap and receive their present. The faces of the children were magical and what really makes Christmas so special, but the face on Santa when an 86 year old widower with too many eggnogs under her belt decided she wanted to sit on Santa’s lap too, was absolutely priceless! As crew it was business as usual and we

worked hard to ensure our guests had the most memorable and enjoyable Christmas ever, no matter their beliefs around Christmas. We always found the time to have a few celebratory drinks and the chefs always put on a good feed for us. It was always hard being away from family but our family consisted of our fellow crewmembers some of which I still consider family to this day. The one thing I struggled with (and still do) is celebrating Christmas in the heat. Christmas is supposed to be cold and snowy, not hot and sweaty! So one year, my good Austrian friend Sascha and I decided we didn’t want to get off the ship in Jamaica so we sat in our cabin, heated up some Glühwein, turned down the a/c, put on our sweaters and celebrated Christmas in the cold! To everyone working on Christmas day, whether it is in hospitality or any other service industry, we salute and thank you for your hard work, dedication and love for what you do because you sacrifice more than any of us. I hope you celebrate somehow, not matter how big or small and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I’m off to the snow this year and will post some envious photos on my Facebook page to make you all jealous! Frohe Weihnachten! At this time of year a lot of families travel and enjoy time with their loved ones over the festive season. While it is an enjoyable time for most it is also a time of year where more accidents occur. The reality is road deaths are on the rise across our country. According to the Federal Government’s BITRE Annual Road Deaths Australia Report, alarmingly there were 39 deaths on Australian roads last Christmas period (2015), which was up 2 per cent on the previous year. These statistics are a timely reminder to not only travel safe and take all the appropriate precautions when on the road at Christmas time, but it also indicates that people need to be prepared for the worst and have their affairs in order. So let me ask the tough question – do you have your affairs in order before you set off on your holidays this year? If not, it is worth going and seeing a financial planner and lawyer and making sure your life insurance policy, will and power of attorney documentation are up to date. It is a negative thing to have to think about at this time of year I know, but an imperative one in my opinion.

the line and more often than not it is your loved ones that are inevitably left behind who are forced to foot the bill, struggle to pay the mortgage, work harder to make ends meet and miss key life opportunities, like being able to afford quality education when children are involved. A lack of protection when a loved one is lost can hit the family left behind quite hard financially. I have seen it happen many times before and it is heart breaking to witness. Getting your affairs in order before you set off on your journey needs to be a priority and if you seek advice from a qualified financial planner and lawyer then the process will be a hassle free one and can be done in no time as we’re used to doing this kind of thing for people on a daily basis. e: manager@kibgroup.com.au w: www.kibcairns.com.au Disclaimer This information may not be appropriate for your individual objectives, financial situation or needs and you should seek advice from your financial adviser or insurance broker before making any investment or insurance decisions. TIME TO FRESHEN UP! RACHE L FA I R WE AT HE R
Logos are considered to be the face of a product or service your business is selling but let’s face it we don’t always get logo design right and sometimes it’s just time for a freshen up. Redesigning a logo can be just as hard as creating a new one but it can also be one of the most rewarding changes a business can invest in. A logo refresh will take you to a whole new level.
font or vice versa is sometimes all it takes.
Some questions you may ask yourself before you start are: • How much do you want to change it? • What elements should be kept? • And will the redesign still be recognisable as your brand you already have?
4. BUSINESS / PRODUCT MEANING Perhaps your logo doesn’t quite make sense. Sometimes logos do too much and are way too busy or sometimes a logo is too simple that is doesn’t portray nearly enough as it should. The logo design needs to be appropriate and speak to your audience.
Redesigning your logo needs to be done the right way, that can’t be taken lightly. Unless you are completely unhappy with your logo, don’t start from scratch. Here are some tips on how you can freshen up your existing logo:
Rachel F ai rw eat h e r is th e Own e r of Im p ress Art G ra p h ic D e s ig n s
1. Simplify It Simplifying your logo can ultimately end up being beneficial because a simple design is much easier to recognise than a busier, complex design. If your current logo design has alot of elements, try to figure out which ones can be eliminated. Break down the original design, simplify it and come out with something extraordinary for your brand. You may need to only rework or redesign one element in your logo. The idea is to get rid of the excess baggage your logo is carrying. Keep the most prominent, defining features. 2. FONT CHANGE Another pretty simple and subtle fix is changing the style of the font your logo may have, just changing a serif font to a san serif
3. CHANGE THE COLOURS Picking the right colours for anything can mean success. Changing the colours on your logo can end up being either a slight or dramatic change, depending on what it is you want to achieve. Even a subtle shade change can do the trick.
OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW Redesigning a logo is definitely a timing thing, but usually has to be done at some point. It will mean a refresh of all your marketing collateral, signage and corporate stationary so it needs to be approached with this in mind. Determine what it is you are trying to accomplish and use at least one, if not a combination, of the ideas above. Always keep in mind your customers wants and needs and even what the competition is doing. Remain creative, inspired and excited by the process, and you’re sure to create a great logo! Just remember though, not all businesses need a logo freshen up - you know the old saying “if it’s not broken - don’t fix it!”. But all businesses I have ever done a redesign for comment on the many benefits a freshen up brings with it - so it’s worth consideration as we enter a new calendar year. Merry Christmas!

THE POWER OF PR MEDIA TRAINING D AN A E J O NE S

”
Danae Jo n es i s P r in c ip a l o f PR & Market i n g f i rm D a n a e J o n e s Consu l t i n g
Last month I have given you some media interview techniques to use when dealing with the media, so this month I thought it only fitting to explain the benefits of media training and how it can create confidence, internal strength and a willingness to want to deal with the media, no matter what the topic. The media can be a very powerful tool for you and your business if used effectively and it’s something worth considering doing more of in 2017. Having worked in all forms of media throughout my career, I’d have to say that there’s not too many people that don’t get a case of the nerves when it comes to doing interviews, but what I can say is it can be overcome easily with training. Media Training is something any spokesperson of a company or organisation should undertake. Even if it’s to learn how to deal with your
CairnsLife 76 Magazine
nerves and how to express yourself with correct body language, it’d be well worth it. But it’s not just dealing with nerves that media training can assist you with, everything from interview techniques, how to present well on camera and how to deal with difficult journalists are addressed during media training courses. Media Training also gives people an in depth understanding of the media and what it is they are looking for when it comes to you and your story. The media aren’t the evil people they are often made out to be, they are just doing a job and trying to write their stories objectively. It’s up to you to deliver the information to them to keep the stories balanced. What it all comes down to, is being comfortable in telling your story and getting your message out there, no matter what the situation may be. Media Interview Tips: Don’t Waffle – keep your answers direct and to the point Be prepared and know what you’re talking about Don’t Lie – when people lie it’s obvious Show emotion where necessary – if it’s a happy story, don’t be afraid to smile Relax – try and think calming thoughts At the end of the day, remember the media aren’t out to get you, they’re out to tell stories to the best of their abilities. If you use the media effectively, they can be a very powerful tool to get your message into the public arena and attract some free publicity for your business. e: danae@danaejones.com.au w: www.danaejones.com.au

DEVELOPING A DIGITAL STRATEGY M A RK D E N NE R T
M ark Den n ert is th e Ma n a g in g Di rect o r o f E m e r g e n t C o n s u ltin g .
These days no business or organisation can afford not to be investing in digital technology. Most consumers are already using digital technology in some way shape or form throughout their daily lives, and like it or not - its not going away! Those not willing to make the transition will forfeit new opportunities and lose ground to those who do embrace digital technology in its various forms. Developing a digital strategy can be overwhelming even for those familiar with using digital technology. The digital marketing landscape in particular is complex and with constant changes in the technology and its application - it makes it difficult to keep up. The typical questions we come across with clients include: Why should I bother? How much will I need to invest? What return on investment can I expect? How can I measure the effectiveness of these investments over the longer term? What will it change in my day-to-day business processes? These are all valid questions to ask. Investments in digital should be seen no differently to any other investment - its all about taking a long term view and ensuring you have a clear strategy.
Why businesses and organisations need to develop a digital marketing strategy in particular: • The majority of Australian consumers use Google for online search (approx. 94%). • Australians aged 18 years+ spend over 28 hours per month browsing content on smart phones or iPads. • Almost 50% of consumers aged 18-29 years now access social media every day, yet only 31% of SME businesses actively implement a social media engagement strategy. • Approximately 55% of businessto-business (B2B) buyers search for product or vendor information on social media, meaning that an online presence is essential. Primarily, people are looking for the testimonials of other people online. Those who can establish a competitive advantage through a clear digital strategy that is well executed will find that new opportunities emerge and over the longer term benefits will outweigh the investments made. Do you wish you had someone who could explain how to use digital technology in simple, easy to understand language?

FIVE TOP TIPS FOR YOUR FIRST CHRISTMAS AS A SEPARATED PARENT SU Z A N N E H A DL E Y
The first Christmas as a newly separated parent can be difficult. Here are my five top tips to make it through the Christmas season with grace and charm to make the festive season truly festive for you and your family Communicate well in advance about child arrangements. If you and the other parent are finding easy communication difficult, there are options to help you negotiate. Your family lawyer is able to help you with this by directing you to resources such as mediators, a parental communication website such as talkingparents.com or by negotiating directly with the other parent. A courtroom is not the place to negotiate with the other parent Most importantly, don’t ask the children to choose. That is asking them to choose between parents. Don’t make them feel responsible for making the adults happy. Adults make decisions about the children. Children should not make adult decisions. Make your priority about making happy memories for the children. Children love both parents and Christmas is a special time in every child’s life. Focussing on what is best for the children is the way to a happier festive season, Yes the children in your day at Christmas was how it always was for you, just like it was for the other parent. It’s not about you. Now is the time for a new way. What is best for the children is always the best guide. Create new traditions. Try not to split Christmas Day. Ask yourself, do you want this for the children or you? Splitting Christmas day may seem like a fair thing to the parents but for the children it can be a time of upheaval and uncertainty and sadly an opportunity for parental conflict at changeover. Double stuffing is how children have referred to sharing Christmas Day, with parents
and their extended families wanting to spoil the children. The morning parent wants to give the children the very best and children are quite naturally plied with wondrous mountains of food. Then half way through the day, just as they are settling after gift giving and breakfast, away they go to the other parent also wanting to do the best for their children and again abundant food is involved. Double stuffing indeed. Make it easier all round for your children. Some parents negotiate for alternate Christmas Eve Christmas Days. This works well for a lot of families creating new traditions. Remember Christmas is not just one day Keep it real. It’s not a competition about gift giving; Gift mountains are a recipe for financial disaster. Keep gift giving as simple as possible. Show your children it’s not about the value of the gift but the gift of giving. Don’t forget you are still parenting. Teach your children about giving to others, perhaps by donating food to the less fortunate. With younger children, help them choose a gift or perhaps help them make something special for the other parent. It’s about the children giving to the other parent, not about you. Importantly, no inquisitions about gift giving. Take some time to be peaceful. Christmas need not be a constant round of activity. Quiet family time singing Christmas carols, reading stories, sitting on the beach or a quiet walk along the Esplanade can be a special time. Children not with you this Christmas? Take time out for you. Read that novel, take that long walk, spend time with friends or volunteer to help those less fortunate to have a happier Christmas. You will reap the benefits too. Above all, enjoy the festive season and all the opportunities it offers. Remember, It’s a season, not a single day.

All Australian Citizens enjoy the privilege of voting to help elect Australia’s Government, they can seek election to parliament, can hold an Australian passport and enter Australia freely. Other privileges include being able to seek assistance from Australian diplomatic representatives whilst overseas and citizens also have a broader range of employment opportunities in the Australian Defence Force and the Australian Public Service. The responsibilities of being an Australian Citizen include voting in Commonwealth, state and territory elections and at referenda, serving on a jury if called to do so and defending Australia should the need arise. Eligibility for Australian Citizenship depends on your individual circumstances. There are many ways to be eligible for Australian Citizenship and the process of applying depends on your eligibility whether it is Citizenship by conferral, by descent, by adoption or by resuming citizenship. If you have migrated to Australia, eligibility is generally under the Citizenship by Conferral grounds. Most people are required to pass the citizenship test which assesses whether applicants
have an adequate knowledge of Australia and of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship and possess a basic level of English. Citizenship by Conferral eligibility also requires that the applicant be over 18, be an Australian permanent resident, be of good character and also meet a residence requirement. The residence requirement is based on the time you have lived in Australia and the time you have spent outside Australia. You must have been living in Australia on a valid Australian visa for four years immediately before applying which must include the last 12 months as a permanent resident, and not have been absent from Australia for more than one year in total, in the 4 year period, including no more than 90 days in the year before applying. Other ways of being eligible for Australian Citizenship may be if one of your parents is or was an Australian Citizen. Certain New Zealand Citizens may also be eligible for Australian Citizenship depending on the date of their arrival into Australia. For further information and eligibility you should seek the assistance of a Registered Migration Agent who can give advice and guidance on the right citizenship application for you.

She’s the highly energetic achiever who topped her class in Family Law, with numerous awards under her belt, obtained her Master’s degree in family law, and was runner up in the prestigious WLAQ (Women Lawyers Association of Queensland) Regional Woman Lawyer of the Year in 2015. He’s the retired Cairns lawyer of 37 years’ experience, a gentleman of the old school, sagacious, calm and highly organised, the consummate legal Office Manager, with a wealth of knowledge and a second, extremely valuable, opinion. They are the perfect foil for one another, a brilliant combination. Vast experience and accumulated knowledge joins top of the class dynamic lawyer to form a winning partnership, a sharp and invincible doubleedged sword to fight for clients’ rights. Lisa Stansfield and Chris Rose are changing the face of client interaction in Cairns’ legal field, recognising that wood panelled offices, power suits and bookshelves full of outdated legal tomes do not make clients feel comfortable or get the job done. “Lisa Stansfield Lawyers (“LSL”) is the leader of change for affordable access to legal advice, a basic right for everyone and long overdue in the Cairns region,” says Chris. Personal service, a warm welcome, ready Irish wit and the positive attitude of Lisa are the ingredients leading to client trust and confidence, ensuring continuing return business and referrals, and often, the forging of lifelong client relationships. “Instead of having your matter referred from senior partner to young paralegals, you’re being personally supported by someone who has diverse life experience before taking up
law. That’s me, and I’m right there at every step,” says Lisa. Lisa has been through it all – divorce, property settlement, fighting to make ends meet and retain her home. She has that empathy that only comes from personal experience, always wishing she could have accessed affordable legal advice when she needed it. In addition, she found it almost impossible to communicate directly with her lawyer. “You can ring our office, speak directly to the principal of the firm and get a quote on the spot,” says Chris. Every one of Lisa’s clients has her private mobile telephone number. “The average mum and dad can’t always afford a lawyer, indeed forty percent of people in the Family Courts are selfrepresented. “In many cases, we can meet, have a consultation, and provide initial advice that will give you knowledge, direction and empowerment. An initial consultation costs $220 for up to an hour. Then I might suggest that before engaging our services, in a property settlement matter for instance, you first contact your bank, Super fund and accountant to gain knowledge of your finances, approach a real estate agent for some appraisals, enabling you to have a meaningful conversation with your spouse. I’ll suggest free mediation services, although I can organise private mediations if you’re in a hurry, and sometimes you have to do that. “There are so many things I could do for my clients, charging them an arm and a leg itemising every communication, every moment on the phone or every email, but it makes so much more sense for them to do the leg work themselves, saving a huge amount of money.
CairnsLife 83 Magazine
“Then after I prepare them thoroughly, some of my clients may feel confident enough to take themselves to court. We know the matters that our clients can handle themselves and again, this saves them thousands of dollars. If the matter is too complex or the client lacking confidence, then of course we are here to take on the load. “Our speciality is family law, but that’s not just about divorce, property settlement or custody issues; it can be losing your licence, a neighbour dispute, writing or changing your Will, dealing with deceased estates. I’m there for you through all that life throws before you,” says Lisa. “We do not always promise to tell you what you want to hear, but we promise we’ll tell you what you need to hear.” “We don’t get out of bed in the morning with the sole intention of simply making money. We must also have job and professional satisfaction, and we both have a strong sense of community,” says Lisa. In that regard Lisa also volunteers her free time and advice to both the Cairns Community Legal Centre and its outreach clinic in Mareeba.
Lisa can be contacted at Lisa Stansfield Lawyers located at Suite 9, The Conservatory 12 -14 Lake Street, Cairns. According to Sarah Lally, a good commercial lawyer possesses a strong understanding of how businesses operate, really understands their clients’ objectives and is able to advise and advocate on that basis and not on the law in isolation. In addition to these valuable skills, when Sarah joined Williams Graham Carman (WGC) as a Senior Associate, she also brought her strong experience in structuring and investments to the team. Working with Partner and commercial law expert Michael Huelin, Sarah is quickly gaining a reputation as a stand out commercial lawyer in the Cairns region.

“I enjoy that the role is often about facilitating a deal and helping clients achieve their commercial objectives. It’s having that technical knowledge of the law but also having a commercial approach to help clients to get the best outcome and ensure their interests are adequately protected,” she says. A graduate of both the University of Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology, Sarah gained extensive experience working in both private practice and corporate roles in Brisbane before moving to

Sydney in an in-house legal counsel role where she gained exposure to commercial transactions on an international scale. With an ability to both anticipate and understand a client’s needs, Sarah has recently acted for property developers, large regulated funds, international investors, small businesses, selfmanaged super funds and other corporate entities. Lured to Cairns by the enviable lifestyle on offer, Sarah has found the calibre of work available in the region to be quite sophisticated, and is motivated by her desire to help her clients to successfully achieve their goals and giving guidance in a broad commercial sense. Sarah’s experience in both private practice and in-house corporate roles makes her a valuable asset to the WGC stable. “Having had exposure to global transactions involving a variety of deal structures across different jurisdictions gives me an edge as I am able to bring the high end advice and practices in those deals down to a more local and bespoke level,” she says.

If ever there was a perception that lawyers were unapproachable, Nardine Collier aims to dispel it at her boutique office in Edgehill Village, where she encourages people to pay her a visit and say hello, even if they are not in need of her legal expertise. She will even shout you a coffee or wine next door at NOA. Although she has over twenty years experience in Family Law and Mediation and Workplace and Employment Law and is currently operating three successful practices, Nardine initially envisaged a different career path.

”
MacDonnells Law Cairns Partners (L-R): Luckbir Singh, Melinda Foley, Russell Beer, Joanne Parisi
While Eleanor Scott’s rise through the ranks in a relatively short time since she joined MacDonnells Law is indicative of her hard work and commitment to the firm, she refuses to take all the credit. Eleanor, who was named Australia’s leading Government Partner at the Lawyers Weekly inaugural Partner of the Year Awards in Sydney in July, was made a partner at MacDonnells Law, one of Queensland’s largest and longest-established independent law firms, in 2015 after joining the firm as a graduate in 2007. “I am so proud and humbled to be recognised in such a manner by my peers, and am grateful to MacDonnells Law for having the confidence in me to appoint me as partner and government practice group leader,” Ms Scott said. “No one wins an award on their own, and this award is testament to the dedication, skill and commitment of my team and colleagues at MacDonnells Law.” Ms Scott, who lived in Papua New Guinea before moving to Cairns, studied law externally in PNG before finishing at James Cook University (JCU) in Cairns and starting at MacDonnells Law after she graduated. “MacDonnells has always been supportive of graduates who come from JCU, and I’m another product of the firm’s confidence in JCU graduates.”
Ms Scott practices in the areas of property and commercial law acting predominately for government clients. She was also part of a team of senior staff and management from the firm’s three offices (Cairns, Brisbane and Townsville) who developed a three-year strategic plan to further modernise one of the city’s most-established firms. Their strategic plan focuses on innovation, growth, customer service and staff development and progression, and was developed in response to the changing face of the legal services industry, how customers engage with the sector and the advent of digital disruption.
“It gives people a snapshot to see if they are eligible to make a claim,” Ms Scott said. “It’s an example of how we have made access to legal services easier and more relevant to the changing times.”
“We’re embracing technology to respond to the way people access legal services,” Ms Scott said. “Our website has new functions that are very user-friendly to help our clients and improve our customer service.”
“We have always looked after and developed our people, and this is a real focus area for us so our lawyers and staff have the tools, ability, support and mentoring in a much more structured way to progress their careers.”
For example, in order to respond to the growing demand for instant online legal advice the firm has developed and implemented highly-responsive and user-friendly case assessment tools that provide consumers with legally sound advice relevant to their individual situations in areas like personal injury compensation and will disputes. The tools help people assess if they are entitled to make a claim before they engage the services of a lawyer.
CairnsLife 87 Magazine
The firm’s growth is tightly linked to the development of its staff. “While we do cover every area of law, we have specialists in niche areas as well,” Ms Scott said. “Our lawyers are experts in what they do, and that has allowed us to tap into new markets including areas like intellectual property, renewable energy and innovative business development.
While MacDonnells Law supports and encourages it staff, it also prioritises the needs of its clients. “MacDonnells strives to be a firm that provides the best possible service for all our clients,” said Ms Scott. Eleanor Scott MacDonnells Law Ph: 1800 632 930

I don’t mince my words; as sometimes there’s no opportunity for that when we are working in a very time sensitive area. “There’s times when you need to placate someone, to make them feel supported. Equally there are times I need to advise that if they go down a certain track, they’re not going to get a good outcome.

Rebekah’s office is eclectic and welcoming with brightly coloured paintings adorning the walls. In recognition of her clients’ work and other commitments, Rebekah will happily meet with clients between 7am and 8pm by appointment. “I can and do adapt my communication style to gain the trust and confidence of my clients, but of course, I dress appropriately for Court,” Rebekah laughs.

Born in Launceston, Tasmania, Rebekah, the eldest child of four knew she was going to be a lawyer from Grade 5 at school. “I believed in doing the right thing, and was always advocating for the underdog. I won a scholarship to Scotch Oakburn College and did my first year of uni in Launceston, finishing a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Law at University of Tasmania in 2003. “In the mid 2003, I moved from Hobart to work for a law firm in Devonport, staying about 14 months, before returning to work at another law firm in Launceston. About ten years ago, with my partner, now my husband, I moved to Cairns, working at two private practices and a community legal centre here before starting my own business. “I’ve a great interest in psychology and mental health and considered going back to uni to do a Medicine/ Psychiatry, but it would take about 12 years to complete part-time. My husband said, ‘But aren’t you helping people now?’’, and he’s right. “I‘ve always believed that your area of law chooses you, rather than the other way around. When you start in law you do everything. You can go buy a house for someone or get them into a business, but it’s not nearly as rewarding as advising and supporting them through a dramatic life event so they can walk safely in their next path,” says Rebekah.

Shine Lawyers Carrie Thomas’ passion for the law makes it easy to understand her success in battling on behalf of her clients for fair compensation. “We’re here to help anyone who’s been injured at work, in a motor vehicle accident or in a public place through no fault of their own,” says Carrie. Carrie was born and raised in Cairns and leads a close-knit team of four lawyers, two paralegals and two administration staff, almost all Cairns born. Carrie completed her education at Trinity Bay State School before studying law at James Cook University (JCU) in Townsville. “I’ve always been passionate about helping people,” says Carrie. “I’ve always stood up for the underdog and the law became a natural fit for me.” After completing her degree and a legal practice course in Brisbane, Carrie moved into family law. “I was young and naïve and came from a loving, happy family, so it was hard at first, but Cairns’ legal fraternity is very collegiate and supportive, so it was a great learning curve at the beginning of my career,” said Carrie. After three years in family law, Carrie spent eight years in insurance law before

taking a break to have a family and work in business with her husband. “Then my husband had a serious accident at work, so that’s why I came back to law. “Going through the long and challenging journey with him gave me another layer of empathy. I have full understanding of the psychological distress as well as the physical distress that can follow an injury, and how this can impact a family. “No amount of money ever makes up for what you’ve been through, and the process can be daunting. It’s not just about providing legal advice, it’s about navigating and guiding people through the process and ensuring they understand they have support at each stage in the journey. “We have a lot of clients who come in here frightened to make a claim because they’re worried about their job security, but for the most part, employers are fair. “It’s really important that they feel supported throughout the process so they can maintain normality and stability for themselves and for their family,” says Carrie. Carrie and her legal team are happy to visit clients when it’s difficult for them to come to the office.

LIFE Leaders in Law Receiving comprehensive, easy-to-understand advice from a lawyer who can clearly explain the legalities around individual circumstances is one of the most important aspects people and businesses look for when choosing a lawyer. Another essential factor is the fees involved. Luckily for Cairns’ residents, a new firm – Esposito Lawyers – makes it simple to get the best easy-to-understand legal advice at a fixed affordable rate. The boutique practice, is led by director/principal Mel Esposito who has been in the Cairns legal industry for 13 years. Services include work, health and safety, employment law, auditing and compliance, estate planning, litigation and debt collection, investigations and small business startups. Mel, whose experience also includes working for national law firms in Cairns and Mackay for five years, opened her own law firm earlier this year after identifying clients’ needs for more direct contact with their lawyer as well as a clear understanding of the overall fees involved. “With our fixed-fee pricing, clients are not charged for every minute we spend on their case but on the agreed fee for the work that will be done,” she said. “Fixed fees enable our clients to know exactly what their cost will be from the onset, which makes it so much easier for them.” Clients of Esposito Lawyers, which services not only Cairns but all of Queensland, include individuals, sole traders, partnerships, companies, non-for-profit groups and government organisations. “We also do what I call preventative law through our consulting services to assist employers before it goes to the next level,” she said. “I come from a very strong litigation background, so when you’re good at suing people you’re also quite good at working out how people can avoid that.” Mel and her team place a strong emphasis on client/ lawyer engagement, ensuring the client deals directly with their lawyer and not assistants. “We find that clients feel more empowered when they work closely with their lawyer who explains things in layman’s terms,” Mel said. “It’s important to us that our clients clearly understand their legal situation.” As far as she can remember, Mel has wanted to be a lawyer. She worked part time at the Courthouse in her home town in Victoria during high school and following high school she studied at the University of New England (AU) to gain her Bachelor of Laws degree before getting her Graduate Diploma Legal Practice from the Australian National University. “I love being a lawyer,” the happily married mother-of-two said. “It is very hard work, but it’s very rewarding when you help people.” Esposito Lawyers 5/92 Pease Street, Manoora Ph: 4032 2236 www.espositolawyers.com.au

LEXUS OF CAIRNS HAS TEMPORARILY MOVED
Last month the staff at Lexus Of Cairns moved across the road to 250 Mulgrave road so that renovations could commence on the showroom. This temporary move will allow Kier Constructions to complete their work on the newly renovated showroom as soon as possible, and at this stage hope to be opening the doors in April 2017. Lexus’ most recently available October results were very impressive, with the strongest October result in nine years. The luxury brand delivered an impressive 923 passenger Cars and SUV’s last month. This month was second only to a four figure result in October 2007.
CairnsLife 94 Magazine
Lexus Of Cairns is proud to be able to update their showroom, to truly reflect the growth and strength of this amazing brand. While the staff can’t wait to be introducing you to their new showroom, for now they are more than happy to welcome you to their temporary location at 250 Mulgrave road (Straight across the road). Currently there are some great offers available on 2016 plate stock, due to clearance ready for the newyear. The other day I was introduced to the slightly amusing and definitely sinister statistic that in Russia an average of half a million baseball bats are sold each year. In 2015 this was balanced against the sale of just one, rather frightened and lonely baseball. It is difficult to believe this is merely a huge misunderstanding on the rules of the game, especially as the primary retailers for this particular sporting good are car salons and auto care shops. It seems that the Russians and in particular Muscovites have taken to working out their driving infringements without resorting to traffic court. By comparison our own local roads seem quaint, safe and well mannered. With the recent introduction of SMS speeding tickets simply a way of decreasing possible human friction, like email, social media and internet dating. I won’t, in fact probably can’t from a legal standpoint, advocate the fun and frolics of speed. Nor can I, in all good conscience, pretend that speed doesn’t kill, as part of any equation it contributes a potentially lethal quotient when compared with say, being stationary. But the sending of fines by sms does give the whole
CairnsLife 95 Magazine
affair an air of causality. It implies infringement is now so commonplace that it is acceptable to have an instantaneous method of delivery. Would we not be better to look at why that might be, rather than applying what appears to be a thinly veiled tax on our stupidity rather than any real deterrent. A high proportion of offences occur in a narrow band of less than 10kph over the posted limits in 60 zones. Consequently it would seem they are more likely lapse in judgment, or temporarily finding empty road. Vehicles have changed since our limits were introduced; they are safer to drive, faster to stop and far more pedestrian friendly than ever before. If the tolerances of road safety are as little as 3kph in a 60 zone then sending an instant fine is not going to save many lives. Working with vehicle manufacturers to give driver feedback as to conditions and road speed would seem like a better bet - especially as the speedo alone just isn’t cutting it. Agreed, if you don’t break the limit you won’t get a fine, but it’s time for our government to decide to defecate or get off the pot. Either work with everyone for safer roads or admit that the money is coming in handy!

For 22 years, students at Tropical North Learning Academy Trinity Beach State School have been luckier than most, thanks to one of the school’s longest-serving and most dedicated teachers. Sue Whipp, who joined the school when she first graduated from James Cook University, has been instrumental in encouraging hundreds of young children to succeed in life. “Not only is Sue a fantastic teacher and school community member, she has always been at the forefront of any of the new pedagogical learning and teaching changes we’ve made at our school, ” principal Matthew Denzin said. “She’s an incredibly caring and compassionate teacher, and her relationship with her students is just beautiful.” Sue, who has taught students from Years 1 to 7, goes above and beyond her teaching duties. As well as being a passionate educator, she coordinates the Year 6 camps, oversees the Student Leaders, ensures the Transition to High School Program is successful and co-ordinates the Year 5’s Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre Science Extension Program among the numerous other programs she dedicates her time to. Working outside school hours is normal for her, and she can always be seen helping out at the school’s discos and after-hours events. “She’s always participating in everything within the in the school,” Mr Denzin said. “She’s just one of those people who are just a fantastic school community member. It was formed in 2014 and is designed to present worldclass programs from the early years through to university, with a mission to engage young minds to grow and succeed. It is one of only a few partnerships of its type anywhere in Australia. “The TNLA partnership is awesome,” Sue said. “We’ve taken students to Smithfield regularly for activities, which helps them feel more comfortable going to high school, and we’ve also taken our Year 6 students to JCU to give them that university experience so they can set themselves some goals for high school. It’s been fantastic.” Sue said she will find it difficult to leave Trinity Beach State School after being there her entire teaching life. “It’s definitely going to be hard to leave after all these years,” she said. “The school has been an awesome place to work.
