$15 Million Palm Cove Villa Project Attracts Strong Investor Interest Dixon Homes Cairns has announced the launch of a luxury villa project in the sought-after North Queensland beach precinct of Palm Cove. Comprising of 17 four-bedroom villas in a gated private-entry estate, the development to be known as Iluka is strategically positioned just 500 metres from Palm Cove Beach, cafés and restaurants. Construction is expected to start towards the end of the 2nd quarter with an estimated completion date of early 2017. Managing director of Dixon Homes Cairns, Andrew Thomas, said enquiry levels were already strong amongst local, interstate and international investors. Priced from $800,000 to $950,000 the villas feature four bedrooms, ensuites, double garages plus extensive living and outdoor areas. The contemporary, energy efficient designs include the use of bi-fold doors and louvres to maximise airflow, high ceilings and windows accentuating natural light, quality fittings, designer ensuites and walk in robes.
Mr Thomas said security and location were the other key features driving demand. “It is a quality gated, private and secure estate just 500 metres from the beach bars, restaurants, cafés and boutique shops.”
just 500 metres from the beach bars, restaurants, cafés & boutique shops “More than half the villas back onto peaceful rainforest, all within 30 minutes’ drive from Cairns CBD and airport, and 40 minutes from Port Douglas.” For sales enquiries or further information call Dixon Homes Cairns on 1300 10 10 10.
Private swimming pools, rainforest backdrop and extensive landscaping throughout the homes and surrounding area capture the essence of tropical North Queensland living at its finest. Lot sizes range from 442 sqm to 530 sqm, with an average size of 460 sqm. “Palm Cove is one of Australia’s most popular beach destinations, with southern and international visitors all year round as well as savvy investors,’’ Mr Thomas said. “There are only a small number of opportunities in this boutique location with excellent returns for the holiday let villas.” “Overnight rates in peak season expected to be around $700 per night per villa providing excellent incentive for local, interstate and overseas buyers’’ he said.

LIFE Foreword
FOREWORD June is a great month for Cairns, with the start of our season of headline events. From IRONMAN to the NQ Games it’s all happening here. This month we have chosen to feature some of our locally owned, well known franchise names. At CairnsLife we love local business. We ourselves are a local business, based in Cairns, busy creating local jobs and not sending money out of state or overseas. Likewise many franchises are locally owned and operated, but have chosen to operate under a well known brand. From Telstra to Red Rooster, from Howard’s Storage to Jim’s, we know the names and we should support these businesses as vigorously as their other local cousins. Another coup for the region is the appointment of the North Queensland ambassador for Jaguar, the lovely, local and ubiquitous Olivia White. This month she, and the equally vivacious Louise Struber from Cairns

LIFE Grumpy Mum
Fighting
T A L K w i t h M i che l l e S t a c po o l e
make it easy for them? In order to develop the skills required to handle bumps in the road while they find their way, it is important for us to let go of the reins a little now while we are there to help and guide them.
Recently, my seven-year-old daughter had her first fight with a friend. It was over alleged namecalling, and quickly descended into an “I said/ she said” debacle. “I just don’t understand. Why did this happen Mum?” she sobbed, with tears streaming down her little face, her words tumbling out in a garbled mess.
2. Does your child know how to fail? Some of the greatest successes in life are born from failure. In the words of Literature Professor and famous author C.S. Lewis, “Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement”. Learning from our mistakes is a necessary stepping stone to achieving our goals.
Initially I wasn’t sure how to respond. I hadn’t yet read the handbook on dealing with schoolyard altercations. My boys are still in Kindy, so phrases such as “Don’t wrap your doodle around your fork,” and “Quit shoving peas up your nose!” are still in my repertoire. This was new territory. In that moment, I only had my own experiences from eons ago to draw from, but I wasn’t sure what the new rules were. In the world of modern parenting, what do you do when a kid calls your child a “bloody sucker”? With Millennial kids (AKA Gen Y) as the latest generation in higher education, there is a new phrase that has been coined in relation to students. Professors and lecturers around the world refer to them as “tea cups”, because their fragile exteriors crack at the first sign of hot water. A by-product of the helicopter parenting tactics employed by Gen X, Millennials supposedly lack the resilience of previous generations. Gross generalisations aside, Millennials, who have surpassed the Baby Boomers as the largest living generation, have grown up in a world where mum and dad fix everything. From living on a budget to reading a map, many haven’t
developed the skill sets required to take care of themselves. While the aim of every parent is to provide a better life for their children, how do we keep up the ethos of positive parenting without sending our kids out into the big wide world with the inner strength of a packet of Licorice Allsorts? In undertaking my research into “Operation No Marshmallows” I found a plethora of information from leading universities written for parents of Millennials. From case studies to tips on coping with separation anxiety, three key points became apparent. 1. Do you handle everything? When your child is faced with an obstacle, do you enable them to work through to a solution or do you snow plough everything out of the way to
CairnsLife 8 Magazine
3. How does your child react to criticism, and how do you react to criticism of your child? Equipped with the tools to turn a negative into a positive is a life skill of many successful people, but when it comes to your little darling, do they (and you) graciously accept the input, or is the other person always in the wrong? While it would have been great to have these pointers on hand when dealing with my daughter’s critical dilemma, at the end of the day I needn’t have worried. After she wiped away her tears, she took a deep breath, pulled up her big girl pants and said, “It’s ok mum, I’m going to say sorry for my part in it.” Millennials may be tea cups, but there is a chance that Gen Z will be Teflon coated and bullet proof. With a little bit of help of course. When all is said and done, we did invent helicopter parenting, and we’re bloody good at it.... Michelle Stacpoole is a writer and mother of three, who takes parenting one day at a time, and always with strong coffee. michelle@cairnslifemag.com.au

Brett Interview with
by S u z y Gri n t e r
There are some people in this world who, within two minutes of talking to them, make you feel like you’ve spent your life asleep. Watching and listening to them is like waiting for a popcorn machine to do its thing. Little golden pods of energy waiting to take the world by storm if you take the lid off. Brett Olds is one of those people, although it seems to me he doesn’t realise it yet. Brett, newly appointed Cairns Regional Councillor for Division 9, is passionate about his new role. He’s the epitome of a family man, a hard worker, and an achiever, but he’s too humble to admit the latter. The only thing he hasn’t achieved is becoming the actor he aspired to be. But that was due to meeting the love of his life and being committed to mirroring his own happy childhood through his own family of four.
OLDS “When I was very young, Dad sold our house, rented out his cabinet making factories, packed the family into a caravan, and we travelled Australia, with mum home schooling us. He was always so busy, and he did this because he realised he just wasn’t spending enough time with us,” explains Brett.
I was to discover that the fruit definitely didn’t fall far from the tree. Brett now runs a very successful business selling state of the art diesel and oil filters.
While living in Perth, Brett’s mum and dad went to bible college and became ministers, and Brett’s dad was asked to help build a hospital in Burma.
“I’ve had a stab at everything. I met my wife Sarah in Dallas when I took up a job as a water ski instructor. I worked my way up in hospitality and we stayed in the U.S. for seven or eight years. I went with nothing and before we left to come here, we were living the dream; two cars, a house, and rental properties in Oklahoma.
“Dad had no idea of the potential dangers given the war at the time. Totally oblivious to the atrocities going on around us, we enjoyed a great life, as kids, we hunted feral animals, learned the local language, it was a great life. In 1988, little did we know that in downtown Rangoon, thousands of peaceful pro-democracy demonstrators were being massacred by police,” says Brett.
“People say I’ve been very lucky, but the harder you work, the more opportunities fall in your path. I’m passionate about this job, really excited about it. I’m doing this because I’m a family man, I care about their future, and our community. I’ve always been very involved in the community, and now I feel I have an even better opportunity to make a difference,” Brett enthuses.
The family ended up in Cairns when Brett was just twelve in 1989, Brett and his sister attending Trinity Beach State School. The family has lived at Clifton Beach ever since.
“I’m in this for the long term to ensure Division 9 residents have a strong voice in Council to achieve our needs and wants,” he adds.
“Dad went back to the building industry. He didn’t need to, but he’s a bit of a workaholic.

Interview with
NEIL Murray
KS NAID C WEEK@TAN
by Di n a A m i n
The popular Singing Up Country showcase returns to Tanks Arts Centre for NAIDOC Week this year, featuring an enviable line-up that includes Leah Flanaghan, Neil Murray and Chris Tamwoy. Celebrating Indigenous Australian history and culture, NAIDOC week is an annual initiative born out of a collective appeal to increase awareness and recognition. Held annually in the first week of July, this year’s NAIDOC Week theme is Songlines: The Living Narrative of Our Nation, and the Singing Up Country showcase will perfectly embody this by sharing songs inspired by Australian country and Indigenous Australian culture. Founding member of country and roots group the Warumpi Band and songwriter of iconic Australian anthems such as My Island Home and Blackfella Whitefella, Neil Murray needs no introduction to Indigenous Australia. He is considered one of the most influential and respected songwriters of our time. With an impressive solo career – including his most recent album Bring Thunder and Rain (2014), which cited by Rhythms magazine as “One of the finest albums of Murray’s 25-year recording career” – Neil is a regular face on the festival circuit around the country.
SINGING UP COUNTRY
It has been almost 10 years since Neil has performed at Tanks Arts Centre and he says he is looking forward to being part of the Singing Up Country show. “I feel very grateful and humble that I’ve been asked to be a part of this; I don’t take that lightly,” he says. “NAIDOC Week is a very important day in the national calendar and I think more and more mainstream people should be getting behind it. The wonderful thing about Indigenous culture is that it shares, it embraces and it encourages people to become one with it; there’s a place for everybody and that’s what I love most about it.”
WITH LEAH FLANAGAN, NEIL MURRAY AND CHRIS TAMWOY
FRIDAY 1 JULY A NAIDOC Week event with great Australian songwriters Leah Flanagan, Neil Murray and Chris Tamwoy, sharing their musical inspirations and a not to be missed finale’ collaboration.
Neil says his part of the showcase will include several tracks from Bring Thunder and Rain, plus a selection of classic Warumpi Band anthems, including of course the national favourite, My Island Home, which was awarded the APRA song of the year in 1995. “I will be singing songs that are relevant to NAIDOC week — songs in language, songs about country and belonging,” he says.
An event informed by the 2016 NAIDOC WEEK theme – Songlines: The living narrative of our nation. Leah Flanagan possesses versatility and stylistic range that has seen her work with a long list of musicians, most recently with Paul Kelly, Shane Howard and Archie Roach. She is joined by Neil Murray, well known for his solo career, as founding member of the Warumpi Band and his legendary song, My Island Home. Alongside these two fabulous artists is Chris Tamwoy who is in high-demand at major festivals like Byron Bay Bluesfest and Woodford Folk Festival. A magical night of song, story and connection MC’d by Narelle Nicole.
Neil’s passion for Indigenous land and people arose from an innate desire to experience and share their culture. “It was a calling from within; I have a deep, innate love of the land,” he explains. “I think if you’re truly Australian you have to love this land in a deep way, and Indigenous people have got that. Growing up, I intuitively felt that I had to learn from these people who knew the land the best and the longest; I needed to be with them.”

SPORTING
Wo rds by Mi che l l e St acpo o l e
As Australians we love our sport. No matter the game or code, we all support a team or individual at a professional level. Whether it be cheering on the Wallabies against the All Blacks, getting behind our cricketers as they decimate the Pomes, or throwing our support behind the men and women representing our country at international level in swimming, cycling, and track and field among others. Our sports men and women are revered, not only for their ability and dedication, but for the weight we place on their shoulders to do our nation proud. The immortal Don Bradman summed it up perfectly. “When considering the stature of an athlete, or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his or her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness.”

Whether we like it or not we’re likely to be stuck in a low interest-rate environment for a while and if you want to get ahead it’s important to know what to look for, here are some of my top tips… • Shop around: savers and retirees have to find the best yields for their cash. High interest rate cash accounts come with trade-offs such as minimum monthly deposits, online transacting, or withdrawal limits. An extra 1 per cent usually makes the limits worth it, but watch for high honeymoon rates that reduce a few months later. • Up the curve: for better returns than a government-guaranteed cash account, but without high risk, look for unitised funds whose assets are in fixed interest assets (bonds, cash). They are aggressively traded to get better yields – sometimes 1 or 1.5 per cent above cash returns. If you want the higher risk-andreturns of shares, you should get advice and always have a diversified portfolio.
is comparison rate is true only for the example(s) u for full details. Yellow Brick Road Finance Pty Ltd
For a couple of decades I have been working with clients to maximize their financial situations and I can honestly say historically low reserve bank interest rates remain a mixed blessing. Is another drop in interest rates a good thing for you? On a positive side, there are variable rate home loans well under 4 per cent including our current rate here at Yellow Brick Road. But to be fair yet another drop, isn’t going to be welcomed by retirees now living on cash deposits yielding only 2.5 per cent or less. And with the latest bank forecasts showing a flat-toreducing yield curve on 10-year bonds, don’t hold your breath for rates to rise soon. • Property: low-rate mortgages make buying your first home seem attractive. But variable rates go up and down. That’s why the ‘qualifying rate’ applied to loan applicants – the rate at which you have to be able to prove you can repay – is still 7 to 8 per cent, basically where it was two or three years ago. First-home buyers hate to hear this but it’s a responsible lending practice. • Budget: every lender has their own expenses calculation they attribute to you and you must also declare all actual expenses. So keep your spending down and get yourself a better loan product. • Risk: home loan interest rates depend on your borrowing requirements and lenders price a loan based on risk and purpose. Typically, an owner-occupier repaying principal and interest, with at least 20 percent equity, is deemed the lowest risk and receives on average the lowest rates. If you fall outside this group, brokers can help identify the
CairnsLife 21 Magazine
lender and loan that best fits your needs. • Equity: if you already have a mortgage, think about increasing your equity in the property by raising your repayment amount. Repaying extra when interest rates are low creates a buffer for future rate rises. • Fees: the fees charged in managed funds and superannuation range from around 0.7 per cent to 2.5 per cent of your balance. Shop around for the lowest fees and keep your money compounding in your investment. A 1.0 per cent difference in fees is significant when the fund only returns 5 per cent. There are winners and losers in a low rate environment but there are things everyone can do to make the best of their situation. You can always give Corina or myself call and we can give you a free and frank appraisal of your financial situation. Scott Burness YBR

Chardonnay - Tumbarumba V E RT I C A L T A S T I N G Mi chae l Ryan Vertical tastings are a rare treat when one gets the chance to really focus on a particular wine, wine region and vintage. Even though such tastings are usually around wines like Grange or Hill of Grace, they still are of great value and interest to passionate students of the vine. My own favourite vertical involved late ’60’s vintages of Seppelts Show Reserve Sparking Burgundy (as it was then known) with my father and wine legends Max Lake and Len Evans. Details are vivid although it was a long time ago; Max spent most of the night cooking vichyssoise and the rest milled around him in his kitchen popping the corks out of the most magnificent of old unique wines. The 4 wines on display in the more recent and modest tasting were assessed excitedly by our family group. The wines displayed a commonality in some of their cool climate characteristics. Peach, melon, grapefruit and light buttery oak flavours from
secondary (malolactic) fermentation were clearly evident. There was a sense of uniformity in the wine structure which one would expect. There were however subtle differences as well which were quite intriguing because, some tasters preferred different characteristics over others. The 2011 for instance (the oldest wine) had developed flavours with a honey straw colour and savoury fruit. The wine also had some confectionary flavours which indicated perhaps a slightly forced fermentation. It was also the lowest alcohol at 12.5% vs 13.5% for the others – again suggesting difficulties. The 2013 vintage, the smartest wine of the group, in my opinion, was pale and flinty with a more mouth watering acidic backbone supporting the exquisite fruit. The discussion turned to why we had these big ranges in alcohol and bottle age. The vintage charts for
the region helped answer the question. 2011 was rated 4/10, a really poor vintage that gave us the answer as to why this wine seemed the most different of the 4. The 2012 and 2014 vintages were ranked 7/10 and the 2013, 9/10. The tasting generally identified the high quality 2013 vintage as the class wine. So what does this all mean? Well firstly – it was a lot of fun for all involved! Secondly, but of primary interest going forward, the exercise tells us that 2013 in this important wine region is the stand out of recent times and 2011 was a very poor vintage. This will inform our subsequent interest in wine buying from this region and ensure that we can avoid any ‘special offers’ of inferior wine and instead focus on the 2013 vintage from regional producers.

NICK Holloway Google Nu Nu, and the first page of search results reveals only Nu Nu Restaurant at Palm Cove. Further research links Nu Nu to the League of Legends. How appropriate. Wikipedia advises Nu Nu is a mood enhancing substance used by Amazon hunters, with the potential to effect changes that the user may find extremely pleasant, indeed addictive. So there we have it. Nu Nu is in the League of Legends and extremely addictive. And that is why Dr Google, and the world, love the supremely classy Nu Nu Restaurant. Nu Nu’s co-owner, our very own television celebrity MasterChef Nick Holloway, says the restaurant’s original name was Husk, a name they were forced to change after discovering Husk was shared by a prominent clothing company. Nu, means coconut in East Timorese. In Portuguese, Nu means nude. “Take the husk away, and you’ve got a nude coconut, and so Nu Nu was born,” laughs Nick. A new boy in the city studying for an Engineering Science degree, Nick took a part time job as a kitchenhand in a Melbourne restaurant. “I fell in love with this colourful, creative and dynamic world full of disparate pirates and crazy people. It ticked all my boxes and I dropped out of university. My parents, both professionals, were aghast. “I met acclaimed Master Chef Geoff Lindsay at a Chef Symposium, and starting as his apprentice, he was my mentor and guru for nine years. I ended up running his flagship restaurant, Pearl, one of Melbourne’s finest restaurants at the time. Nick’s wife Amy was working with Melbourne restaurateur Jason Rowbotham, who returned

Warm the butter in a heavy based sauce pan and gently fry the ginger and garlic until faintly caramelised, aromatic and translucent. Crush the raw rice into fine grains in a blender and then add to the pot, stirring with a wooden spoon to ensure it is incorporated into the buttery goodness. Add the stock and heat to a gentle simmer, stirring regularly to stop the rice catching on the bottom. Continue to cook for about 15 minutes until a sweet, perfumed and starchy porridge is achieved, and then
remove from the heat to rest for 5 minutes. Dice the reserved prawn meat into chunks and then stir into the porridge with the corn kernels and leave off the heat whilst the prawn meat cooks through. Season with salt and white pepper and adjust the consistency with a tickle more stock if required. The porridge should be hearty but not too thick nor too thin. Divide the porridge between four deep bowls and garnish with lashings of xo prawn oil, popcorn meal, husk powder, prawn crackers and petals Fish and corn stock Using a simple fish stock as a base add 2 cobs of corn chopped into chunks and simmer for 20 minutes. Rest the resulting stock off the heat for a further 10 minutes and then strain. Once cooked strip away the husk and reserve for husk powder. Cut the kernels away from the cob and reserve half for the porridge and the other half for the husk powder. The left over cob stem can be added to the fish and corn stock. from a Cairns holiday brimming with enthusiasm about opportunity for the two families. “We all decided to come to Cairns on a whim, be our own boss in a little beachside restaurant, and nurture our passion. “But Nu Nu was quickly and immensely successful, and we garnered the attention of national media,” says Nick. “Ten years on, the Nu Nu brand outgrew its old location. The move to its current location was hugely beneficial, more befitting Nu Nu’s tag of barefoot luxury. “Nu Nu doesn’t have the pretention of the city, but it does embody all the good qualities of metropolitan dining,” says Nick. “The Nu Nu brand is not just about me as a chef, we’re a highly multicultural team, and we’re all involved. We put everyone’s ideas through the Nu Nu’iser, and they come out the other end as perfect Nu Nu, a distillation of all our ideas, and everything the region has to offer. “Nu Nu’s style is luxurious, but we’re accessible to all, an ‘everyday luxury’ embodying the abundance of the Tropics. We’re ever-evolving, dynamic, and fresh. “Our food comes from Rusty’s Market and our local farmer friends. There’s more to it than ‘cooking with the seasons’. We’re celebrating food of the sun. Pure Nu Nu,” enthuses Nick. A world away from the hustle and bustle of our modern lives (but just a short drive from Cairns CBD) is The Florists Coffee Shop & Tea Room in Edmonton, a place reminiscent of a time gone by and resembling the style of a 1950’s English Tea Room. It is testament to the vision held by Alan and Kath Maclean to create a traditional experience unlike any other in the region. The sweet perfume of fresh cut flowers, soothing tunes and smiling faces combine to create an environment that is simultaneously relaxing and interesting. Scattered couches come replete with a selection of books and magazines, making it easy to put your phone down and while away the time.

Alan and Kath purchased the business in September last year. At the time, Kath was studying a Masters in Business and says ‘We had been looking at different businesses for a while, Alan had worked as a florist as a lad, and I liked the idea of an authentic high tea experience’. The combination of florist and café piqued their interest. With Alan being five weeks into his retirement after a career spent travelling the world as an electrical engineer, the timing was ideal. When they reopened in January they had transformed the space – not only aesthetically, but also ensuring ease of access for customers with mobility issues. High tea is served on fine Noritake china (which Alan and Kath retail along with a range of gifts and knickknacks) and can be described quite simply as three tiers of deliciousness. There’s a mix of cold cuts and vegetarian sandwich fingers, and a delectable selection of ‘dainties’, or as I recall them: bite-sized morsels of heaven! Buttermilk scones, melting moments with real raspberry cream filling, coconut custard tarts, cream horns, pistachio stuffed dates…very decadent, but with the humble price of $25 per head. Serving their customers at the table, the menu (all available as take-away) offers all-day breakfast, lunch, home-made sweets and a range of hot and cold beverages. Alan and Kath are introducing ‘Evening Intimate Dining’, a new initiative commencing on the 3rd of June, offering a 3 – 5 course homestyle dining experience every Friday evening. Bookings are essential as numbers will be strictly limited to guarantee truly personalised service to their patrons.

Perhaps we’re beginning to appreciate the value of supporting small business and personalised service, but I think we’ve also become justifiably curious – why indeed is all supermarket meet uniformly coloured in its Styrofoam packaging?
The rebirth of popularity of the local butcher’s shop is not at all surprising. After all, it offers real meat, nothing but the meat, hand-picked for quality and very competitively priced. Trinity Beach Quality Meats is one such butcher, definitely a cut above, an expert cut at that. Brett and Shendel Harland live and talk meat all day, and have a tangible passion for good old fashioned service and high quality products. Brett and Shendel took out a swathe of awards in the Australian Meat Industry Council’s Regional Sausage King Competition last year. After taking out gold for their Lamb, Pepper, Coriander and Basil sausage, silver for their Lamb, Mint & Rosemary and gold for their Spicy Chorizo, regional Sausage King followed for their Traditional Pork Sausage. “We proceeded to the Queensland titles, winning Best in Queensland for our Traditional Pork Sausage. “In February this year we went to the National titles, achieving third place in Australia for our Traditional Pork Sausage,” says Brett. “We’d like to get placed again this year, maybe with our beef sausage,” adds Shendel. Business growth has been significant since the awards, with many new customers coming to try the famous sausages, meet the Sausage King and experience their other high quality products. The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is on your doorstep…
Covering almost 900,000 hectares between Cooktown and Townsville, the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is extraordinarily diverse, encompassing myriad natural and cultural landscapes. It is so exceptional that in 1988 it was awarded World Heritage status for its outstanding universal value, which includes breathtaking beauty, rich biodiversity and ancient plant lineages. The Wet Tropics Management Authority was established in 1993 to ensure the values of this significant place are protected, conserved, presented, rehabilitated and transmitted to future generations. To achieve this, we work with Rainforest Aboriginal people, landholders, farmers, conservationists, schools, scientists, councils, government agencies, community
groups and tour operators—all who play an integral role in caring for this precious global asset and we support and celebrate them wherever possible.
Take the opportunity to learn more about and connect with the irreplaceable Wet Tropics landscape with some of our exciting upcoming events and activities:
We proudly collaborate with our partners to support management and presentation of the Area. We work closely with Rainforest Aboriginal people to provide capacity-building workshops—‘project planning’ is the focus of the 14 June workshop. Our Wet Tropics Tour Guide program, held twice a year, delivers specialised training to the tourism and education industries to continually improve how the Area is portrayed to our domestic and international visitors. Find out more: www.wettropics.gov.au/tour-guide-training.
‘Keep it Wild’ eco-art competition School kids from across the Wet Tropics are invited to flex their creative muscles and construct a piece of eco-art themed around ‘living lightly’ in the Area. Great prizes are offered by our local sponsors, Skyrail and Cairns Harbour & Sunset Cruises. Entries close on Friday 22 July. For more information see our website.
There are many volunteer organisations working throughout the Area, with new members and volunteers always welcome. These groups contribute greatly through their participation in important projects including field studies, tree plantings and injured wildlife rescues. We encourage you to get involved wherever possible. Find out more: www.wettropics.gov.au/volunteering. With so many individuals and organisations participating in the protection and management of the Area, we are excited to announce the return of the Cassowary Awards in 2016. The awards recognise outstanding contributions and exceptional efforts. Nominations will be open from 1 July until 31 August 2016 with information and nomination forms available on our website.
‘Wild Exposures’ A series of free events including displays and presentations relating to the Area held at the Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre. In June, the Hike ‘n’ Bike exhibition promotes the walking and cycling opportunities around Cairns and includes a community bike ride on Sunday 12 June and guided walk on Sunday 26 June.

With globally-recognised landscapes underpinning our urban and rural lifestyles, the Wet Tropics Management Authority encourages community stewardship of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. We believe everyone can play an important part in caring for the Area.
‘Wild Talks’ Come along to the Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre and enjoy a free ‘cuppa’ and interesting presentations about the Area by local experts. Upcoming topics are ‘Wildlife under the canopy’ in two parts, 4 June and 13 August. ‘Creepy crawlies’ presentation is on 10 September. According to the Griffith University’s Franchising Australia survey, sales turnover of the national franchising sector for 2014, was estimated at $144 billion. Even with a declining interest in mining investment and the weakened state of the labour market, the franchise sector has experienced net growth in both the number of franchises opened and sales turnover. The benefits to owning a franchise appear to speak for themselves. Franchise owners receive access to an established product or service which already enjoys widespread brand name recognition. They are also provided with proven management and workplace practises, ongoing support, training and operational assistance, greater purchasing power and access to bulk purchasing and national marketing and advertising. Statistically the risk of failure tends to be smaller with franchises, as owners
are not starting off with a blank slate. They are aligning themselves with products and methods that have already been proven, saving them the time and effort of having to build a reputation while giving them access to a broad client base which would otherwise have taken years to establish. When we hear the word Franchise, we automatically think of large chain stores such as MacDonald’s and KFC but there is another “face” to franchising, which is all too often overlooked because of this “big brand recognition”. As consumers we look at a franchise and we see a business operated under some of Australia’s most recognized brands but a large number of franchises throughout the Cairns region, have a local face as well. They are owned and operated by local people who have a vested interest in this beautiful region. These business owners know their market intimately and understand what it is like to live here. They apply this knowledge to their own businesses,
CairnsLife 31 Magazine
adding their own personal touches and style, within the framework of the Franchise. More often than not, Franchise owners have families and personal ties to the community. These are the same people who donate money to local schools, hold positions on local committees, take part in community activities and coach junior sports teams. Through their businesses they create job opportunities for other locals and contribute to the overall improvement of the local economy. Despite being part of a larger organisation, Franchise owners appreciate on a local level, the importance of providing good customer service to ensure their customer base remains loyal and satisfied. When these businesses get it right, it becomes a perfect blending of the personal touch of small business ownership supported by the benefits of big business networking.

CAIRNSLIFE TALKS TO THE CAIRNS FACE OF TELSTRA, TROY STONE
While he cites a lack of skill riding the waves pouring water on his dream job of pro-surfer, Troy says he loves what he does and embraces the daily challenges that he says is truly rewarding, not just for himself but also witnessing the development of his committed team. “Seeing the people in my business develop and achieve their own goals is always exciting.” Growing up on the Sunshine Coast and then etching a career in retail management in Brisbane, Troy was ripe for a

No one day is ever the same for Troy Stone. As the man behind Telstra’s Cairns Central and Smith eld retail hubs and Business Centre, this is a man constantly on the move – from inducting new staff to sharing the ‘ oor’ with his retail team, it’s his agile approach to management and results-driven outcomes make him a powerful and inspiring force to be reckoned with.
Talking Telstra, Troy says it is not just the tele communica ons that have built the business and the brand. It is also the people.
“After 10 years in the video industry we were looking to diversify our business and Telstra were looking for someone to open a store in Cairns Central. We applied for the license and after a very thorough process we were approved and granted a license for Cairns Central. We then opened the Smithfield store in 2006 and the Business Centre in 2010,” he said. Talking Telstra, Troy says it is not just the telecommunications that have built the business and the brand. It is also the people. “We have a very diverse and
technicians. The best bit, they are all based here in Cairns.”
Troy says that after spending 23 years in retail and management he understands what it takes to be successful and is more than willing to share. “I'm very driven and always looking for improvement and ways to make it easy for our customers to get digitally connected. I'm very hands-on in the business and have a strong desire to see my people be successful. Whatever they choose to do in their life I always hope that we've given them some of the skills they

need to achieve success.”
From a technological point of view and today’s rapidly changing face of communications, Troy says he is glad to be at the helm with Telstra. “Whether it's a new office phone system for our business customers, products and technology for the ‘connected’ home or helping clients streamline their own business with technology on-the-go and apps - there's always something new happening.” When not at work, overseeing his many and varied Telstra related responsibilities, Troy loves nothing more than to spend down time with his wife and three daughters. However, when you hear what he does, it is hardly down time!
“We love to go camping, fishing, travel and simply relaxing and trying to switch off. I do try to keep fit and have done the Cairns Ironman 70.3 a few times and when I have time I try to squeeze in some triathlon training.” Troy Stone - in three words according to his mates“Loyal, reliable, honest I had to ask a couple before I got any answers I liked,” he jokes.

Before Damon Caldwell and Vikki Monte took over the operation of Red Rooster Raintrees earlier this year, they undertook a ten-week inductiontraining program, which included seven weeks in-store training. They also had to undergo a comprehensive screening process and meet with the Queensland State Manager before being given preliminary approval to become Franchise Partners with Red Rooster. “The training was very intensive, and it fully equipped us with the skills required to confidently be able to hit the ground running,” says Damon. Supported by a strong team of twentyfive, some of whom have been employed at the restaurant for many years, Vikki feels that their experience has proven to be invaluable.

There are very few companies that can trace their history back over four centuries. Allied Pickfords has been synonymous with moving services since the seventeenth century, and with over forty branches across Australia, and in over six hundred locations around the globe, they are the largest removalist company in the world. “Our removals experience makes us a market leader. With a removals heritage dating back almost four hundred years, we have proven techniques and processes to ensure we meet the promises we make,” says Michael Josephs, Branch Manager of Allied Pickfords Cairns. With over seventeen years experience in the relocation industry, Michael has a keen eye for detail, a strong customer focus, and exposure to all levels of the industry, starting his career as a removalist before
working his way up to sales and ultimately management. Sharing a long association with the region, the Cairns depot originated from humble beginnings over twenty-five years ago. “We started in a small shed in Manoora servicing the local area back in 1990. Since then we have grown into our current facility at Portsmith, offering secure storage for household goods,” says Michael. While removals in the region can be problematic at times due to remoteness of locations and weather conditions, Michael relies on the knowledge of his team to make each move a success. “The many years experience of the staff in Cairns means that every situation is considered thoroughly when planning by our operations department, who take into consideration local weather events that can cause delays,” he says. Joining Michael in the Cairns branch is Operations Manager Scott Smith. Recently completing his Diploma in Logistics, Scott began his career as a trainee removalist in Adelaide, and brings over twenty years industry experience to his role. Team Leaders Derek Wieczorek and Robert Jamieson round out the management team, each bringing with them decades of experience in remote relocations. With a core value to provide world-class relocation service to clients worldwide, Allied Pickfords focus on service and CairnsLife 35 Magazine
delivery, and providing a safe and healthy environment for their staff. Currently in negotiation with many of the hotel chains in the Cairns region to provide internal moving services and office relocations, Michael is hopeful this will consolidate their place in the market as leaders, and continue to develop the brand by offering value for money removal services. “We have the depth and logistical planning to handle any size relocation, from a single bedroom unit on the eighth floor to the relocation of a multi-story office complex, down to the relocation of a family heirloom,” he says. When it comes to choosing a removalist company, Michael says that it is important to take the time to cover all bases. “Make sure that you get a detailed quote, that the service promised is listed on that quote, and that you’re dealing with the same company at the delivery end,” he advises. M A RVELOUS MARLA FROM
Howard’s Storage World By Silvia Mogorovich
Eleven years ago, Marla Georgouras visited Howard’s Storage World on the Gold Coast and less than three months later, she walked out of their Sydney Head Office as the first franchisee of the company north of the Sunshine Coast. Taking on a loan by herself (when her daughters were 14 and 16 years old), the early years were a challenge even for someone like Marla, who modestly describes herself as ‘quite organised’! However, she has had amazing support from loyal staff members, with an average length of service of over 5 years. In today’s world of transience, keeping good staff for such a long time is a credit to her warm and personable nature and exceptional management skills. She is also generous in her support of the local community, and has helped out in many ways. Marla’s background in renovating homes began in Sydney, and she is a wealth of
advice when it comes to creative storage and design solutions. Recently she was consulted by a client with a need to conserve space after moving into an apartment and she was able to recommend the innovative solution of a pull-out clothes airer that holds a full load of laundry and folds away into a closet.
Additionally, the Howard’s Rewards program is free and convenient – there’s no card, just signup on the spot with your phone or email and receive a $10 voucher! Every $200 spent will earn you another $10 voucher, and you’ll be celebrated on your birthday with another voucher.
One of the pioneers of the current trend of ‘pop-up shops’ in Cairns, they regularly appear in Cairns Central. The pop-up shop holds an ample selection of the range that is available at their premises at 108 Scott Street, which has plenty of parking space and is conveniently located right by Industry One coffee shop. Out of about 3500 items, ventilated shelving is one of their bestselling products, with the store winning a national Howard’s Achievement Award last year for most units sold. All of the products instore have been through rigorous testing by Howard’s Storage World to ensure you can trust the quality of your purchases.
Offering friendly, expert advice and fully informed about their incredible products, the team at Howard’s Storage World Cairns can help you sort out a solution that works for you and our tropical environment!

Julian BROWN Even though MacDonnells Law Senior Associate Julian Brown was born in Melbourne, his connection with both Cairns and the firm goes back through his family’s generations. “My father was born in Cairns and my family are from the Far North,” the personal injury and employment law specialist said. “It’s quite a coincidence that Dad went to Melbourne for his first job (with the Department of Defence), and I came to Cairns for my first job. “MacDonnells is one of Queensland’s largest and longest-established firms and has quite a history,” he said. “A great aunt of mine, Joyce Stewart, worked as a personal secretary for Sir Thomas Covacevich who was a partner at the firm for many years.” Julian, who is also a Legal Member of the Far North Queensland Human Research Ethics Committee and was President of the Far North Queensland Law Association from 2010 to 2013, joined MacDonnells 11 years ago.
In that time he has developed a strong personal injury practice, specialising in insurance-related inquiries, personal injury litigation, WorkCover claims and workplace health and safety (including mines safety). As a senior member of the firm’s statewide Dispute Resolution and Litigation practice group, Julian also leads the firm’s employment law team, which represents employers in workplace accident claims and advise both employees and employers on general employment law. With both a Bachelor of Science (Anatomy) degree and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours to his credit, Julian’s education is an extra advantage for his clients in medical negligence and public liability claims. “I was interested in medical science but I realised I didn’t want to be a doctor,” he said. “But because of that I am now able to use that medical knowledge to assist clients in personal injury cases.”
Julian was also president of the Cairns Community Legal Centre between 2010 and 2013, and was appointed to WorkCover Queensland’s panel in 2008. While he loves playing cricket and being part of the Cairns Choral Society, which he joined when moving to Cairns and where he met his wife Rebecca, he is proud to be associated with MacDonnells Law.
“There’s quite a history to the firm,” he said. “When you walk through the front door you’ll see a lot of memorabilia. It’s quite a legacy that we’re carrying on here at MacDonnells Law.”

Rebekah BASSANO Bassano Law principal Rebekah Bassano started helping people receive justice when she was just 16 years old, and she hasn’t stopped for a moment since. The well-respected Cairns solicitor, who has been specialising in family law, divorce, separation, child protection and domestic violence for 13 years, had her first taste of the legal system when she was a teenage employee at a pizza outlet in Tasmania and discovered management was underpaying staff. That didn’t sit right with her, so she made a complaint to the Tasmanian Department of Industrial Relations, which took the case to court. “The State prosecuted the case and I was their only witness because no one else would come forward,” she recalled. “I had to give evidence as a 16-year-old, and it was extremely nerve-wracking. But, in the end, I helped get people their back-pay, which was wonderful.” From then on, her fate was sealed.
“I suppose I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer because I believed in right and wrong and in doing the right thing,” she said. Rebekah started her legal career in Tasmania before moving to Cairns and working with larger law firms as well as the Community Legal Sector. She opened her own practice in 2014. Her passion for righteousness has steadily increased. She is a member of the Queensland Law Society (QLS), the QLS Ethics Committee, QLS Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, QLS Family Law Committee and Australian Institute of Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators. She is also Chairman of the Family Law Pathways Network for Far North Queensland and was recently appointed to the Board of the Shelter Housing Action Cairns. CairnsLife 39 Magazine
She also gave evidence at the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry, completed the College of Law’s Master of Law (Family Law) and the Clayton Utz Intensive Negotiations skills training and last year became a qualified Family Law Arbitrator. These credentials, along with her passion for justice and her experience in both the corporate and community legal sectors, enables Rebekah to give her clients the best help in separation, child matters, property settlements, child protection and family violence matters. She became interested family law while working in Tasmania for now Federal Circuit Court Judge Terry McGuire, who was then focused primarily on family law. “I really like helping people so they can make a difference in not only their own lives, but in the lives of their children,” she said. Philip Bovey AND COMPANY LAWYERS
With over 32 years’ post admission experience Philip Bovey is North Queensland’s most experienced criminal lawyer. Using this experience Philip gives insight into areas clients should be aware of, specifically a client’s rights and the client/ lawyer relationship and costs. “One of the few advantages a person suspected of committing a crime has is the right to silence,” Philip said. “That right should never be given up before speaking to an experienced criminal lawyer. “In my view, because of costs and resources, the criminal justice system is tilted very much in favour of the prosecution. So a strong client/lawyer relationship is important. “There’s no doubt a lawyer develops a closer relationship with the client than a barrister does. Generally speaking, a barrister is engaged just prior to the matter going to a court hearing. The lawyer is engaged with the client and often their family since the process begins, giving the lawyer a better understanding of what might be the best outcome for the client.
“Costs are also a major issue,” he added. “There’s a significant difference in costs in not retaining a barrister to conduct all court proceedings.” Due to Philip’s extensive experience in practising criminal law, Philip is able to undertake many proceedings that would normally require other firms to engage the services of a barrister. Because Philip conducts much of the in-court advocacy himself, this can provide significant cost savings to the client. Nevertheless, Philip uses the services of experienced criminal barristers when the circumstances warrant. Philip says he discovered quickly when speaking with clients who had previous experiences with other lawyers that one of the most significant areas of complaint was uncertainty about costs. CairnsLife 40 Magazine
Philip and his team have aimed to alleviate the stress surrounding issues of costs by implementing a fixed fee retainer system. “Because most lawyers charge hourly rates, there’s no certainty as to the final cost,” he said. “I settled on a fixed fee relationship with clients early in private practice.” “This gives the clients complete certainty about what service is to be provided and what costs will be incurred.” Philip is supported by two skilled criminal lawyers who undertake the full range of criminal matters. These solicitors work under Philip’s guidance and with his support. As a result the firm can offer clients a range of fixed fees covering the various stages of the legal process. “There is no substitute for experience when it comes to obtaining the best possible result available for the client.” CL
Girgenti LAWYERS
One question any business leader should be asking themselves is “How will my business look in ten years’ time?” Girgenti Lawyers is one of the businesses looking to the future and investing in the local legal leaders of the future. That’s because Girgenti Lawyers believes that by investing in local youth, they are able to grow the next generation of legal practitioners in Cairns. Currently, the firm employs a spread of junior and up-and-coming practitioners, including Rachelle Parker who has been admitted as a solicitor for over two years and Dylan Carey who was admitted as a solicitor earlier this year, and Cara Olufson who is currently studying a Bachelor of Laws at James Cook University, who works as a legal secretary and paralegal at Girgenti Lawyers. Rachelle Parker, primarily based in the Mareeba Office and Cairns by appointment, deals in the areas of Property and Commercial Law, Family Law and Wills and Estates.
Dylan Carey, primarily based in the Cairns Office, deals in areas of Litigation, Commercial Law and Insolvency Law. Cara Olufson, who has always been enthralled by the precise and delicate nature of the family law area and has the dream of establishing herself as a successful family law practitioner within the family law team at Girgenti Lawyers. “Across these three team members, we have the next generation of inspirational legal leaders for Cairns and the Far North Queensland region”, said Director Pietro Girgenti. “It is from their youth, extensive knowledge of evolving technology and media, and the currency of their knowledge, that we are able to design the way we will deliver legal services over the next 5 to 10 years.” With three offices around Queensland in Cairns, Mareeba and Brisbane; Girgenti Lawyers is able to engage in a large variety of work across many aspects of law. Breaking down the walls of traditional practice, their Cairns and Mareeba solicitors are routinely able to work on matters originating from the firm’s Brisbane office. Thereby bringing enormous experience to the practice by working on and engaging with complex legal issues arising out of South East Queensland and servicing clients Australia wide and internationally. “Our young professionals have grown in leaps and bounds by being able to incorporate this experience into their

respective practices locally”, says Mr Girgenti on the experiences gained by his younger practitioners. “This inherently increases the standard and expertise of legal advice that is provided by our Firm to our local Far North Queensland clients.” Pietro Girgenti, supervises and directs each of the practitioners within the firm and provides wholesome guidance and leadership to the firm generally. Pietro, being a young entrepreneur himself, understands and harnesses the value in investing in young dedicated solicitors who are willing to learn and take on challenges when and where they arise. Girgenti Lawyers brings the next generation of solicitors to the forefront by drawing on what we can achieve as a state-wide organisation. By investing in these young leaders, we are harnessing and developing the potential of the future legal practitioners within the Far North Queensland area. CL

With a combination of Aboriginal, Dutch, English and German heritage, Samantha has championed for the evolution of the fashion world. “When I first started modelling there was much less diversity in the industry, so it’s a great relief to see this change over the past few years, both here in Australia and on the international modelling scene,” she says. In Cairns in July to launch the 2016 Face of Cairns Central competition, Samantha is looking forward to spending some time back in her home state. “I am excited to see what talent we can find in Cairns, along with the chance to meet some of my fans. I love coming home to Queensland, and I am really excited to visit Cairns for this fabulous event,” she says.
Grace Taylor
Samantha is passionate about inspiring young people to get out and live their dreams. With a career that has enabled her the opportunity to travel to many places around the world and work with talented and creative people, she speaks highly of competitions such as this as a platform for launching modelling careers. “My very first taste of modelling started in a similar styled event when I was very young,” she says. Joining Samantha at the launch will be the 2015 Face of Cairns Central Grace Taylor, and runner-up Mary Anderson.
Fresh from her recent catwalk debut at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia, Grace will be on hand to speak about her experiences over the past year which include securing a contract with Chic Model Management, modelling for the cult brand PE Nation, and as part of the New Generation designer show for Anna Quan, Holystone, Jason Hewitt, Kaliver, Monster Alphabets and Third Form. Signed by Dally’s Models, Mary is currently the face of the Cairns Central Autumn/Winter campaign, and features in the fashion pages for the June edition of CairnsLife Magazine. Cairns Central Centre Manager Christie-Lee Jackson says the prestigious event will incorporate an exciting new concept which will enable more opportunities for entrants. “This year we are introducing both a Spring/Summer and Autumn/ Winter Face of Cairns Central. This will enable us to further the careers of two models, and give more opportunities for them to work on various campaigns both locally and on the national stage,” she says. With a prize pool of over $10,000, including modelling contracts with Chic Model Management and Dally’s Models, Samantha has some sound advice for entrants. “Work hard and be dedicated to achieving your goals,” she says. WOMEN making a
difference
The Cairns community has an abundance of strong, successful women making their mark in a diverse range of industries and professions. Not only does this set a healthy precedence for a regional town, but it ensures that the young women of today have a number of role models to inspire their dreams. The first American woman in space, Sally Ride, said “Young girls need to see role models in whatever careers they may choose, just so they can picture themselves doing those jobs someday. You can’t be what you can’t see”. It’s crucial to recognise the benefits for the community that empowered women generate. CairnsLife is proud to celebrate women who have broken the glass ceiling and are successful in their field. Intelligent, creative and inspiring: these five local women are making a difference in our community, and proving beyond a doubt that it’s possible to live out your dream in your own backyard.
Franca Forde “I always listen to what is required and put myself in my clients shoes,” says Franca Forde, Operations Manager of Staffing Solution. Working in recruitment since 1964, Franca brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table, and with a background in hotel management she is passionate about hospitality. “You might say I eat and breathe the industry,” she says. After relocating to Cairns to manage a local hotel and experiencing first hand the shortage of skilled staff in the area, Franca established the Black and White Brigade in 1989, ultimately becoming Staffing Solution. Franca attributes her success to surrounding herself with good staff who mirror her enthusiasm, as well as developing and maintaining close relationships with her clients.
CairnsLife 54 Magazine
Making a difference in the Cairns region by offering professional and skilled staff to her clients, Franca feels that this in turn enables them to provide exceptional service to their own customers and guests. “My high expectations of presentation see us supplying staff for five star properties equal to large city service,” she says. Motivated by having belief in what she does, Franca’s honesty, integrity and “good old fashioned service” are what set her as a leader in the industry. When it comes to running your own business in a competitive market, Franca says that it is important to never be afraid to try new things. “Be prepared to take risks and go above and beyond the expectations of your client,” she adds. With years of experience working in successful sports-based clinics in Sydney, Megan and husband Chris opened PhyxMe in Cairns with the knowledge that clients get better outcomes in an interactive environment.
Positioning PhyxMe as the chosen clinic for local sporting teams and highly successful international athletes, all PhyxMe therapists are involved in and work with sporting clubs in Cairns. Megan herself is one of the few female physiotherapists in Cairns who runs onto the sporting field to treat athletes.
Megan and the PhyxMe team provide a range of treatment methods such as physio, exercise, massage and biomechanical assessments to ensure the very best result for every patient.
“We know sports, we play sports, we cover sports and we get the type of results that sports people are chasing,” says Megan.
“I believe the whole treatment experience at PhyxMe cannot be found anywhere else in Cairns,” Megan says. “PhyxMe is a physiotherapy clinic that looks, feels and operates differently.”
Acknowledging that her strong work ethic has played a key role in her success, Megan believes that it was ultimately the clarity of her vision that has enabled her to make a difference.
Inspired by seeing the PhyxMe community grow and thrive in Cairns, Megan takes pride in having a clinic where her staff have fun and

Ingrid Steed A passion for making a difference in the field of health care has led Ingrid Steed to her current role as Chief Executive Officer of Health Reimagined. A not-for-profit, nongovernment organization, Health Reimagined specialise in Program Facilitation and Delivery Services to the public and private health sectors. “We deliver government programs such as Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) and Closing the Gap, and offer our services to the private health sector using our unique electronic system HealthE Platform,” says Ingrid. Created by the team at Health Reimagined, the HealthE Platform is a cloud- based program, developed after the need was identified to streamline the administration management of the facilitation and delivery of government health programs in Far North Queensland.
Inspired by those who have achieved greatness inspite of obstacles and personal cost, Ingrid believes in the “Pay It Forward” system, where small good deeds have the capacity to touch the lives of many, producing a groundswell of transformative outcomes. Attributing her success to always embracing whatever life presents, Ingrid feels that you won’t get the chance to say yes to an opportunity twice.
“I use the uncertainty of the future as a driving force towards success. I commit to a plan, stay positive, engage and ignite others in the journey. I am a great believer that together, we are greater than the sum of our parts,” she says.CL Health Reimagined Ph: 07 4044 8902 www.healthreimagined. com.au
“I see my patients as people and aim to improve their wellbeing. I don’t see them as customers or business opportunities,” says Kylie Cloney. As the owner of Cairns Naturopathic Clinic, Kylie offers her patients Integrative Medicine, where they work with both herself and their doctors to embrace conventional and alternative medicines together.
“My core directive is to support the integration of modern medicine and complementary medicine,” she says. As a Health Scientist, Kylie has a strong science background as a base, and believes that there is a need for integration of the two modalities to provide dynamic and effective broad spectrum health care. “I work in collaboration with doctors and not against them,” she says.
Kylie Cloney
Reflected in her business catch phrase “Wellness for Life – because Life should be lived”, Kylie promotes a health model focused on optimal health and wellbeing, rather than disease management. With her principal motivation her patients, Kylie’s compassion for people keeps her focused on overcoming business obstacles. “I have a higher purpose, bigger than my needs and income,” she says. Advising those wanting to start out with a new business opportunity to be brave enough to stand alone in your endeavours, Kylie feels that new ideas develop from a willingness to step outside of the box. “Be brave enough to plant the seed, and patient enough to let it grow,” she says.CL Cairns Naturopathic Clinic Ph: 07 4054 6573 www.cairnsnaturopathicclinic.com.au

THE END OF THE LINES
LIFE Motoring Half this year has gone, and with it could be heard the death knell of two very different off-road icons.
By D av i d Lei t h The last and best (so far) of the Defenders are available from Trinity Land Rover starting from $54K plus onroads and the FJ Cruiser will continue to be available form Pacific Toyota staring from around $46K plus onroads
The first month of the year heralded the news that the the nearly 70 year run of the Land Rover Defender had finally come to an end, with the last ever of these rolling out of the Solihull factory. The Defender was a testament to the underdog, designed during post war austerity to utilise the left over materials from conflict, it’s run went to span an unbelievable two generations with very little being changed in it’s outward appearance and overall design. One can’t help feeling that this was not so much intention, as a reflection of the lack of a development budget and the frugal “don’t fix what ain’t broke” Midlands attitude. There is no denying the vehicle was successful, and so wide spread that it gave rise to the claim that it was the first car seen by over a third of the world’s population. As it pottered, spluttered and stubbornly pushed it’s way into the least hospitable places, furthest from the tarmac and other automotive civilisation. The only thing that stopped the Defender from taking over the world, is probably the same reason that it nearly managed to conquer it. The technological doldrums, coupled with a high level of low expectation of build quality and reliability amongst it’s many owners. Bit’s broke, fell off or wore out, but hey, it was a Land Rover - you just fixed it up and carried on. It was the British way - reckless, even foolhardy, but character building. Unfortunately, this was the antithesis of what was emerging from the motor houses of Japan. Which brings us neatly onto the other iconic casualty of automotive culling, the recently announced end of the Toyota FJ Cruiser. This is a vehicle that really didn’t have a home, it looked weird
CairnsLife 61 Magazine
and cool at the same time. Toyota were worried it would cannibalise sales of the Prado from which the FJ gleaned its underpinnings. Toyota thought it would be a hit in the US and Middle Eastern markets, so gave it a large 4-litre petrol engine, acceptable with the low cost of fuel in those target countries, and sat back to wait for the sales. They came, but not as predicted, and after 3 years of mediocrity the FJ reached our fine shores. It was a hit, the quirky styling, the superb off-road performance and mildly absurd barn doors all added to the charm of supreme reliability that the Japanese had long ago stolen from the Germans. Even the lack of a diesel option couldn’t stop the volume of sales and with good reason - this was not a boring car, it was fun and had style (some even said stylish, but quietly and behind closed doors). Toyotas were great, they could conquer the moon, or at least the outback and finally there was something in the line up which hadn’t traded clinical engineering for utilitarian (yes, I suppose I mean boring) styling - it was like a Land Rover that had been born in Tokyo and we liked it. But sadly after August there will be no more, when production ceased for the US market, used FJs started to appreciate - so strong was their following. That may not happen here, as the FJ will have remained virtually unchanged for it’s entire 8 year production run, not quite the 68 years of the Defender, but it’s a sign that if they build the right vehicle, we will buy them! Land Rover are about to launch their Defender for the 21st century, which will hit the showrooms in 2018 - I hope the demise of the FJ cruiser is met with a similarly exciting resurrection.

THE ART OF PERFORMANCE
The driving face of Jaguar
Olivia White
Jaguar F-Type
words by Michelle Stacpoole
Sleek. Stylish. Sophisticated. These are three words that are synonymous with the Jaguar brand since it began production on its performance cars in 1935. According to Jaguar, life is not about figures, it’s about feelings and moments that feed your soul. It’s the “Art of Performance”, and it’s this passion that is manifested in their cars. Olivia White also embodies style and sophistication. With a strong social media following, the Cairns identity’s infectious personality, high level of professionalism and standing in the community has positioned her as a leader in the field of marketing and branding. In a match made in sophistication heaven, Olivia has teamed up with iconic car manufacturer to be the Trinity Auto Groups Jaguar Ambassador for Far North Queensland. “Jaguar were looking for local ambassadors all over the country to represent their brand. Of course it was something I was keen to be involved in, so after being nominated I put together a proposal, wrapped up it up in a gift box and bow, sprayed it with my perfume and sent it through to Jaguar to win the role” she laughs. Olivia’s unique proposal method had the desired affect, and she was appointed the Jaguar Ambassador for 2016. In her role as Ambassador, Olivia uses her social media platforms to promote and
represent Jaguar, hosts and attends various Jaguar events in the region and conducts media interviews on behalf of the company. And of course there is the added bonus of driving a Jag. While waiting for the new F Pace Jaguar to be launched in Cairns in September, Olivia has a busy test-driving the rest of the Jaguar fleet. “The exciting thing about the F Pace is that it’s an SUV. Jaguar has never had an SUV before, so this is completely groundbreaking for the Jaguar brand,” she says. With the same engine and makeup of a sports car, but the comfort and space of a family sedan, Olivia is passionate about Jaguar’s new direction. “Jaguar have had a massive transformation from where they were to where they are now in looks, shape, style, even the type of car they are. They used to be such a gentleman’s car. You could imagine your professor or doctor driving an old Jaguar in the emerald green. Now they’re super sporty, a lot more fun and the price tag isn’t anywhere near as exorbitant as it used to be,” she says. In encouraging people to go and check out the latest Jaguar offerings, Olivia gives us her reviews, with all the style and sophistication we have come to expect for this dynamic and energetic Jaguar Ambassador.

Literally the most exciting car I have ever driven!! As the roar and clap from the engine and exhaust working together redlines your adrenaline levels and your unknown desire to be a racing driver suddenly comes to life. Go over 95kms/ph and as you take your foot off the accelerator to slow watch the wing come up at the back to help you slow down.
Jaguar XE This is the car I am proudly driving and loudly loving, it combines the style and class of Jaguar with a totally new and luxuriously sporty frame with the engine and extras to back it up. It has the size, the affordable price and the convenience of ‘touch of a button’ features perfect for a mums car, yet there’s nothing "mumsy" about it. The XE has everything you’ve ever wanted in a car, complete with a range of accessories like a backseat jacket hanger for the busy women or man going between meetings or events. The XE not only makes you feel good but also look good, what more could you want?
Jaguar XF This is the new boss man’s car, if you appreciate style and class, with undeniable power under the hood and all the extras then the XF is the only car for you. I don’t know which I love more; being in the car or just taking time to appreciate the exterior with its sleek lines and curves.

Good old fashioned family values and a desire to provide quality workmanship at a good price has proven to be a successful business formula for Cairns couple Michael and Robyn Walsh. The owners of Hannam Street Mufflers have been operating out of their Hannam Street premises for over 19 years and credit their long connection with the Cairns region and the “family atmosphere” they provide as the reason for their loyal customer base. “People always say they come here for the family feel,” business owner Robyn said. “We are very family oriented and we try to provide good personal service that keeps people coming back.” Robyn grew up in Atherton and married husband Michael, who was born and bred in Cairns, in 1981. “Michael’s family were quite well known throughout the region for their own business Walsh’s Auto. Michael did his apprenticeship locally with Irelands, travelled for a little while before returning to Cairns to open his own shop, which back then was attached to his family’s business.” Eventually the couple set up shop next door and they have been hard at work ever since, while also raising three children Brian, Kerry and Geoff.

Situated at the northern end of Palm Cove since 1953, the club has always been immensely popular as a meeting and eating place for both locals and tourists. I have wonderful memories of the rear garden at the old clubhouse to which we could walk from Clifton and Kewarra Beaches to catch up with friends. I could say, “Those were the days”, when everyone knew one another, the meals were huge, tasty and inexpensive, and we enjoyed camaraderie in the perfect environment of a tropical beachfront. But though the building has changed, nothing else has. There’s still that wonderful sense of community and family, the meals are still exceptional value, the beer’s still cold, and the gentle waters of the Coral Sea still lick the white sanded, palm fringed beach a stone’s throw away. Club Manager Lawrence Green has been with the Club for nine years, and saw the Club metamorphose in November 2012 with the opening of the new Clubhouse.

“We’re looking to fill a gap in conference facilities for the local market. At present there are very few or no alternatives to big resort hotels and little community halls. We will cater for the middle ground. “The added benefit of using the Surf Life Saving Club conference and associated amenities and services is that all the money goes back into the community, into surf life saving,” says Lawrence. “We are so fortunate to have our own car parking area behind The Surf Club. Of course it will be extended with the new developments, hopefully starting in June or July, with an undercover drop off area for weddings and other functions,” Lawrence says. The club has a typical club menu catering for families, with its widely acclaimed generous portions utilising the freshest local produce.

St Andrew’s Catholic College was established in 2001 as a Pre-School to Year 4 College with an enrolment of 89 students. It is situated in the Parish of the Northern Beaches of Cairns. The founding Principal of the College, Mrs Lauretta Graham, worked tirelessly to establish not only a world class learning facility but a venue in which the whole community could share. By 2012 enrolments had reached 1650, catering for students from Prep to Year 12. As one of the newest educational institutes in Cairns, St Andrew’s enjoys new and modern facilities. In 2009, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cairns, the Cairns Regional Council and the Queensland State Government developed the Redlynch Community Sports Facility in the grounds of St Andrew’s. The aim was to provide sporting

facilities for the local schools and community. During school hours this facility is used by all schools within the area for various sporting events and the facility is available for district sporting teams outside school hours. In 2010 All Saints’ Chapel was constructed within the College grounds. This had been a vision of Mrs Graham’s for many years. The Chapel has been nominated for a number of architectural awards. In 2012 a new era for St Andrew’s began with the appointment of a new Principal Mr Lee MacMaster. The buildings have been designed to enhance the natural environment of the campus. They have been grouped on the design plans to provide for the needs of Junior Years (Prep to Year 5), Middle Years (Year 6 to Year 9) and Senior Years (Year 10 to Year 12). Geographically, St Andrew’s Catholic College is situated in Redlynch Valley and is part of the Northern Beaches Parish of Holy Cross. In partnership with the Parish, the College hosts Sunday Mass and a number of liturgical gatherings of students, families and members of the wider community in All Saints’ Chapel, situated within the heart of the College grounds. An overwhelming strength of St Andrew’s Catholic College is the experienced staff who are caring, dedicated and committed to providing a quality education for all students. Overall program structures and philosophies are monitored by a highly skilled and experienced senior staff, whilst enthusiastic and committed teachers work to meet the individual needs of students, supporting each student so as to encourage them to develop a ‘love of learning’.

HEALTH & CHARACTER
Requirements for Immigration
All people who are not Australian citizens require a visa to enter Australia. One of the conditions for the grant of a visa is that the applicant must meet the legal requirements for entry to Australia, in particular health and character criteria. People who want to migrate to Australia are required to meet health requirements which may mean undergoing a health examination. The type of health examination required depends on your circumstances, including the proposed length of your stay, your intended activities in Australia, your country of residence and other factors.
that are in short supply in Australia then they may be refused a visa as they do not meet the health criteria. Some visa classes have a waiver component which allows DIBP to consider waiving the health requirement if the costs to the community and access to health care services by Australians would not be undue. However a waiver cannot be exercised where the visa applicant is assessed as representing a risk to public health and safety. Similarly, all visa applicants entering Australia are required to be of good character and are assessed against the character requirements. Section 501 of the Migration Act contains a character test to assess the suitability of people to enter and stay in Australia and has discretionary powers to either refuse or cancel visas if the person fails the character test.
Applicants applying for permanent residency are required to undergo a medical examination, a chest x-ray if over 11 years of age and a HIV/AIDS test if 15 years of age or older. Applicants for temporary entry into Australia may require a chest x-ray, medical examination and other tests, if requested. Health examinations for Australian immigration may only be conducted by a qualified doctor or radiologist who is nominated as a panel doctor.
A person will fail the character test where they have a substantial criminal record, or where they have or have had an association with an individual, group or organisation suspected of having been or being involved in criminal conduct. Where a person’s past and present criminal conduct or general conduct is found to be not of good character or where there is a significant risk that the person will engage in criminal conduct in Australia they will also fail the character test.
If an individual has a costly health condition or they have a condition that will require treatment, care or community services

Miserable Divorce Suzanne Hadl e y
Separation and divorce, even when a couple part on good terms, can be very difficult. If only couples could simply say to each other the words of the Kenny Chesney song “Nothing left, no regrets; No hard feelings wish you all the best; No blame, no shame. Just time to say it’s over I guess. We both agree it’s the right thing. The only thing left to do. You win, I win, we lose” When it comes to separation and divorce, there are those who insist on taking all the right steps to have a thoroughly miserable divorce to ensure their relationship with their former partner and their family is tainted for a long time. There are 5 easy steps to a miserable separation and divorce 1. Hire the cheapest lawyer in town. Don’t use a family lawyer. You get what you pay for and the lawyer can be the difference in having a good divorce or a miserable divorce. Not all lawyers are equal. If you are looking for someone to guide you through your divorce, not using a Family Lawyer is a bad decision. Lack of knowledge in what is a specialised area leads to poor advice and increased costs. An Accredited Family Law Specialist is just that, someone who is recognised as an expert in their field, specialising in Family Law. So go ahead, hire the cheapest non family lawyer available to be sure of an uncomfortable miserable divorce. 2. Find a shark. Get out there and find the toughest meanest most aggressive lawyer in town. Make sure he/she is very expensive. Look for the biggest advertisement and find a lawyer’s photograph on their website. Pick the one who looks the angriest. This will guarantee to increase the conflict in your divorce make things altogether miserable for both you and your spouse. Make sure you don’t consider
mediation. Mediation would minimise conflict, can assist a couple achieve a negotiated outcome without court proceedings and gives each party control of the process, not the professionals. On the other hand by increasing conflict, your pet shark will perform outstanding work, clocking up billable hours with a care factor about you of zero. Increased conflict means increased billable hours and what little goodwill existed between you and your ex-partner soon disappears like mist in the morning sun. You will have many years ahead to ponder the hatred and animosity generated. When the case is over or may be even before it gets to that court room door, your wallet will be empty your ex-partner’s wallet will be empty and the lawyers will have the rest. Best of all, any money that may have paid for your children’s education will help put your lawyers children through their education instead.
very public shouting and swearing. That’s sure way to ensure your children share your misery. By growing up to have their own depression, relationship problems, obsessive compulsive disorders, eating disorders and drug addictions, or your children will grow to resent you . This really makes a miserable divorce and separation. In time they may have their own miserable divorce. Studies have shown that where there is conflict in divorce and separation more harm is done to the children through the conflict than the separation itself. Parents who minimise conflict in their separation and ensure the children are insulated from the effects of family breakdown , who focus on parenting, not parental conflict, have happier healthier children who cope with the parental separation and change in living arrangements far more easily than those parents who fail to follow this simple rule.
3. Don’t consider counselling. To ensure a thoroughly miserable separation and divorce, you won’t want any help with that emotional turmoil. You want to be fuelled by anxiety, depression, guilt and anger. It makes you feel so bad. Engaging a counsellor would guide you through the feelings of grief at the loss of the relationship and help alleviate the stress of separation. Counselling would also help you make better decisions for you and your family, helping to minimise the conflict. So to have a thoroughly miserable divorce and separation, avoid mental health professionals. Stay away. Try to deal with it by yourself and all your friends on Facebook. Let your emotions blossom into a full blown temporary psychosis that will continue to fester. enjoy your misery at leisure.
5. Insist on justice. To ensure misery in your separation and divorce insist on justice. Spend a lot of time, money and energy seeking it. Don’t compromise unless your idea of justice and equity is met. Because your ex-partner and the courts probably have very different opinion sof what just and equitable means, this technique is particularly effective to increase your disappointment. Experienced Family lawyers know there is no such thing as Justice in the Family Court. A just and equitable result, which treats each party fairly is the outcome Family Lawyers seek to achieve and the court seeks to deliver.
4. Involve the children. Don’t leave anyone out of your miserable divorce and separation. Try to destroy your children in the process. By increasing the conflict between you and your partner and engaging the children in the conflict will increase your misery tenfold. use them as messengers for adult business. Make sure you tell them about how horrible their parent is. Share your opinion about their parent to make sure they too are as miserable as you. Take a hard line on every minute with your children that you can. Every minute. Make sure changeovers involved a lot of

In speaking with a number of candidates lately, I’ve noticed a pattern. They have either resigned or been made redundant at the end of the year and knowing that it was traditionally a ‘nohire’ period, and they had the means to continue to support themselves and their families, they decided to take a well-deserved break. That in itself is fine, we all need a break now and again and especially if you have been through the stress of a redundancy, a break is a good thing. By late January, early February most have commenced the process of looking for work. However, it’s now April and they are still looking. This can be a bit of a shock, especially to those who have never been out of work for long periods before. If you are ever faced with this situation, no matter what time of the year it is, here are five tips to better preparing yourself for re-entering the market place again:
1. Register with at least 2-3 reputable Recruitment firms. Do this as soon as you leave your last role. Email your resume to them, then follow up with a call. Get the name of your contact there and try to meet with them. Advise them you are not in a rush, but to keep you informed of opportunities regardless. This way, should a role come through, you can always negotiate a later start date and still have that break.
‘head hunted’, however, it’s extremely important to have a clear, defined summary of your capabilities, your achievements and your employment history. Remember this is an evolving document and will need to be targeted (along with a suitable cover letter) to each role you apply for.
2. Stay active on LinkedIn. Don’t just put up ‘looking for opportunities’ then walk away. Stay active on a daily basis, search the job board, update your status, and keep an eye on what is happening in your sector.
5. Last but not least, enjoy your break, relax, spend time with your family, but don’t turn down conversations, meetings, etc because ‘you’re on a sabbatical’. Take an hour a week at least to do all of the above and I promise you, when you do start searching again, it will be a much smoother transition back into the world of job hunting!
3. Call your contacts. If you are back on the job market, call your contacts. Let them know you are available and to keep you in mind should they hear of any openings. Again, this could take weeks, but at least you’re in the mind of a prospective employer or referral.

4. Is your resume up to date? Is it applicable? Many Executives have not required a resume for years due to being

“It hurts to go!” - CYSTITIS Cystitis
• More common in females than in males because the urethra or pipe emptying the bladder is shorter in women. • Patients with diabetes also have an increased chance of urinary tract infection. • Drinking more than 2 litres of water per day can assist with preventing infections. • Cranberry juice or tablets are the only “natural treatments” which may help reduce the incidence of infection.

Urinary tract infection or cystitis is usually caused by a bacterial infection. It is more common in females than in males because the urethra or pipe emptying the bladder is shorter in women. The infecting organisms usually enter through the urethra and into the bladder giving symptoms of frequency of urination, burning and stinging and occasionally incontinence, bed wetting and blood in the urine. There may also be cramping lower abdominal pain. The organisms get into the urethra from the surrounding tissues. A woman does not have to be dirty or lacking in hygiene to get a urinary infection. In sexually active women infection is sometimes massaged into the bladder through the actions of intercourse. If bowels are not regular or there is diarrhoea on a recurrent basis then there is an increased chance of urinary tract infection. Some women have a reduction in the amount or quality of mucus which is normally present around the urethra. This usually assists with protection against infection. Sometimes changes in the mucus are the result of a hormonal abnormality. Patients with diabetes also have an increased chance of urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infection is usually diagnosed by finding bacteria in a urine specimen at the laboratory where the type of infection is identified and the bacteria are tested against antibiotics to see which are effective. The test generally takes approximately 24 hours. Treatment is often started with the antibiotics most likely to help as judged by the doctor’s experience. Usually antibiotics are required from 1 to 5 days. Drinking more than 2 litres of water per day can assist with preventing infections. Alcohol and caffeine containing drinks (tea, coffee and cola
drinks) can cause significant bladder irritation and worsen symptoms. After emptying the bladder, the urethra should be wiped from front to back and never in the opposite direction. It is incorrect to rub as if drying with a towel as that will cause further irritation. It is important to maintain a good regular bowel habit and a high fibre diet is encouraged. For women who develop symptoms after intercourse, the bladder should be emptied at a reasonable interval afterwards and a glass of water (approximately 400mls) should be consumed. This assists with flushing the bladder out to help keep it clean. Medications such as Ural or Citravescent change the pH of the urine from acid to alkaline. This has the effect of reducing stinging and irritation at the time of urination. They will not cure infection. Cranberry juice or tablets are the only “natural treatments” which may help reduce the incidence of infection. If cystitis is recurrent a doctor should be consulted regarding preventative treatment. Further investigations such as scans or an examination of the bladder with a “telescope” may be necessary. The use of low dose antibiotics or urinary antiseptics may be required to prevent infections. Occasionally a breakthrough infection or possibly a resistant infection can occur despite that. MEN DO PILATES TOO! Janine Noopetch It’s true, Pilates classes are often dominated by woman, however it is interesting to learn that Joseph Pilates initially created Pilates formerly known as “Contrology” for German soldiers injured and bedridden during World War 1. Growing up as a sickly child suffering from Asthma and other ailments, Joseph turned to exercise and athletics to battle these ailments. He became intrigued by the classical Greek ideal of a man being balanced in Mind, Body and Spirit and studied various forms of exercise and began to develop his own exercise regime based on this concept of Mind, body and Spirit. Joe rigged springs to hospital beds enabling the bedridden German soldiers to exercise using resistance. This is why when you look at the Pilates equipment today e.g. Pilates Reformer and Cadillac it still has this resemblance. Men come to Pilates for various reasons, many times with a referral for injury rehabilitation or simply to discover for themselves the benefits of Pilates in improving posture, core strength, endurance, and flexibility. Pilates uses the intricate muscles that are often ignored during gym sessions and other workouts. Mens just want to have those BIG STRONG BICEPS. Pilates really creates a balance in the body’s muscular and skeletal systems. With a big focus on breathing and the TRANSVERSE ABDOMINIS, the muscles that sit behind your six-pack (Rectus Abdominis) – basically YOUR CORSET MUSCLES or CORE as it is widely known today. This helps the pelvis to fall into its natural alignment and the spine is then able to move into its natural curves. You will feel taller after taking a Pilates session
as it alleviates the compression within the spinal discs. It truly is amazing. Many men particularly tradesmen or those sitting for long periods of time suffer from back pain and regular Pilates Reformer sessions can help strengthen, lengthen and create better flexibility. We have a few regular male clients coming into our stunning studio in Smithfield that have suffered with back pain due to their type of work or injury and by the time we have completed our warm up and footwork on the reformer – they often say their pain has gone. Pilates is also a game changer for men involved in sports like golf, running, swimming and triathlons. Many top-level sportsmen have a secret weapon of PILATES in their training schedule. If you are a male and would like to try Pilates – don’t think its just for the ladies, it is a challenging workout and practice that will benefit your life ten fold. Give us a call or find a studio near you and give it a go. You will be surprised at the challenge and the amazing feeling you will experience after your session. Pilates will truly change your life and how you live and move in it. Pictured is Shayne Smith – Master Trainer for basi PILATES®, who came to Pilates with a Karate injury – knee dislocation requiring surgery. In time Shayne was able to rehab his knee with footwork alignment and muscle development. Surgery was not needed. Shane will be at Cairns Pilates Barre for basi PILATES® Comprehensive Training commencing in February 2017.

It’s not hard to see why Cairns Cat Oasis Resort is so named. Walk through the doors and you’re in another world. The sound of trickling water is reminiscent of a high class spa, and I have to pinch myself to remind myself that this is indeed a cat resort, yes, a resort. The word cattery doesn’t belong here. This is the vision of Rhonda Boyle, no crazy cat lady here, this is the business venture of an astute lady who recognised a need, and with her husband Martin, catered for it more than admirably with huge success. “I designed it based on my own experiences of leaving my own cats in boarding facilities. Where level of care was a huge factor, security was the biggest issue. Owners need to go away with the absolute conviction that their beloved pets will be safe and secure” says Rhonda. The result of over two years’ planning and construction, Cairns Cat Oasis Resort is a state of the art facility designed specifically for the most discerning moggy. I marvel at the superbly appointed huge enclosures equipped with shelves and hideaways, climbing apparatus and beds at various levels. And not a cat poo in sight, not the merest whiff of feline in the airy interior. I expressed amazement at the immaculate state of the entire facility, every single surface was spotless. Well planned drains allow the enclosures to be completely disinfected and hosed out. In the large and equally pristine kitchen, row upon row

of metal feeding bowls had been scrupulously sterilised ready for the next moggie meal. The enclosures overlook an atrium, comprising a beautiful water feature running the length of the centre of the Cat Oasis, babbling waterfalls providing a soothing background noise. “There’s always gentle noise here. The radio and the waterfalls go all day, and at night we play animal healing CDs. It means that whatever loud noises happen outside, the cats cannot hear and be frightened” says Rhonda. It’s hard to imagine that we are in the city. Situated in McCoombe Street in the heart of the industrial area, the Oasis is just that. “Throughout the year we can always provide accommodation. The period between Xmas and New Year is always a very high demand period, so then the large Oasis enclosures are divided into two enclosures. We have sufficient resources to cater for the majority of boarding requirements of Cairns’ pet cat population. “Our clients’ pet vaccination updates are forwarded to us to keep on file. This is particularly advantageous in case of needing emergency accommodation. We do everything strictly by the book, and pride ourselves on exemplary pet care and organisation,” says Rhonda. A dedicated team is the backbone of the caring of the cats and the cleanliness of the Resort. Shirley, Jo, Nina, Jodie and Gordon, are compassionate, reliable, cat loving employees, clocking up many years of experience between them. At any one time, there will be six or seven precious felines exploring outside their enclosures, just being cats and occasionally stopping for a bit of attention - something no cat at the Oasis lacks.

YOUR BUILDING CONTRACT can be individually tailored to you I’ve recently heard about some issues regarding owners not being aware of what is and what is not included in their building contract. Just about anything related to your new home construction should be included; or you may prefer to perform some works yourself so that can also be excluded and this allows you to tailor your home to your requirements.
and drawings, whether preliminary or full working drawings, to be included as relevant documents and also provide for PS and PC items to be detailed.
is a cost involved then the builder can price this up and include it on the variation. This may extend the construction period if more work in involved. If you have any questions about the building contract process talk to your builder and if you need any further information you can contact the relevant industry body providing the contract and discuss it with their experts.
Your builder may have many homes under construction so don’t rely on their memory …..or yours.
As an addition to these documents there should be some form of selection portfolio that will include your colours, individual fixture and fittings and any other relevant information for the construction of your new home. This document does not have to form part of the building contract as this information is usually done after the contract is signed but this information should always be signed and approved by the owners. The builder and trades will refer to this document as it should be what the owner is expecting to be included in their new home. Photos, product specs, individual finishing details etc. can be included in this document.
The building contract, whether it be Queensland Master Builders, Housing Industry Association or Queensland Building and Construction Commission, provides for any scope of works to be included. They require a specification
The industry stipulates that any information should be in writing, even if you see something on site that you want to change you will need to go back to the builder and they will provide a variation to the contract to reflect your requested changes. If there
Whilst builders will try to include everything the owners want it is ultimately the owners’ responsibility to make sure everything they are expecting to be included is in writing, so that there is no misunderstanding during the construction process. Verbal discussion is not enough to change something.

LIFE Conference & Events
Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef are the
Natural Place to meet The words of TTNQs business and conference campaign ring as true for us locally as they do for businesses out of state and beyond.
In the following pages we feature some of the best venues the region has to offer, all with their own twist on making your meeting, conference or event successful. Company meetings run outside of the office can be great motivational tools. An off-site meeting can really shake things up and excite and energise your employees, building team spirit and getting everyone’s creative juices flowing. Adding a one night stay for a meeting “away from home” is often an amazing way renew enthusiasm create new ideas, and increase commitment to company goals. However, an off-site meeting that is not wellplanned or carefully thought out beforehand can be an absolute disaster. All it takes is one bad course of Chicken Snitzel or one botched trustbuilding exercise and the day becomes memorable for the wrong reasons! To help your event run smoothly we have assembled the top 10 tips for planning a successful off-site meeting: Make it outstanding. When planning an off-site meeting, people often set their expectations too low. Considering the day strategically can make it more than just a simple bonding experience; it can grow to be an opportunity to solve problems, generate new strategies, and help employees develop. Try to anchor any meeting with goals that actually mean something to the business. Be creative with the location. A mediocre location will produce mediocre results. The surroundings of your off-site meeting can make an enormous difference. Hotels and conference centres are
great locations, be sure to visit a venue first and go through exactly how you plan to use them. Consider break-out areas, adjacent activities, and even the view - all these things can contribute to the overall tone. Think outside the box, use space and location in quirky way. Go see. When selecting your meeting site, be sure to take a tour beforehand, including “back of the house.” Ensure ample storage space for supplies, secure areas for employees to put their personal gear, check that their are sufficient number of toilets (and that they are clean!) and importantly eat some of the food. Don’t scrimp on the fun. This may be a business meeting, but don’t neglect the recreational opportunities. Many conference centres and hotels offer a wide range of physical activities such as golf and tennis, which can offer unique team-building exercises. The day’s schedule should include time to allow employees to take advantage of any extras. Do the costings. Be sure to set your budget ahead of time. Things to consider: Cost of transportation, facility rental, equipment rental, accommodation, catering, and possibly a guest speaker or entertainer. Bring the right stuff. Today’s meetings call for more than just a few chairs and a powerpoint. Attendees will almost certainly bring laptops and tablets to share data, so you’ll need a means of projecting that information. Where possible ensure the internet is available, you should also consider beforehand whether you’ll need Internet access in the meeting venue, or if this is a time to be “off the grid.”
CairnsLife 94 Magazine
Select two dates. When choosing a date for your off-site meeting, keep at least two possible — a preferred date and an alternative. When you start looking at available facilities, you’ll be able to choose the best option based on the number of attendees. Alternative dates can also help you can negotiate a better price. Create a detailed timetable. Work backwards from your event date to determine what needs to be done beforehand, and when. Remember production lead time, shipping times for deliveries, and anything else that needs to be thought out before the meeting day. Plan the day intelligently. Remember to include travel time to and from the site, and set an agenda that reflects that. Additionally, make sure that all attendees have transport to get to the venue on time. Decide whether you want the day to be a high-intensity or laid-back and relaxing or a balanced program combining a little of each. If you decide to mix work with play, carefully consider which should come first. Do PR in advance. Circulate a pre-event agenda that lets people know what the objectives are for the off-site meeting. This will give employees an opportunity to prepare ahead for full and constructive participation. Where appropriate, give pre-meeting homework that employees need to bring to the meeting. It will also help build up excitement for the big day! Hopefully you’re now your inspired to take up the challenge and use our fantastic region to help do better business!
