henever I need a fresh breath of air, I often walk the gorgeous Esplanade. I find myself getting lost in all the beauty of the boats along the marina, daydreaming about which yacht is mine, enjoying the boardwalk - if the heels aren’t on! The sound of a GBR helicopter taking off, the aromas of the many restaurants and I’m happily immersed in la la land; until I bump into a tourist. Oops! Then I’m back to reality and staring at his crisp white t-shirt with I J Cairns. What a perfect reminder to be grateful for this piece of paradise that’s better than any daydream! HELLO SPRING. IT’S THE END OF THE DRY SEASON AND THE HUMIDITY IS STARTING TO BUILD. THERE’S A FEAST OF THINGS TO DO AND SEE. HERE’S OUR PICK OF THE BEST OVER SEPTEMBER.
FEEL GOOD FRIDAY’S WITH LAUGH’S, DRINK’S AND CHARITY 29 SEPTEMBER Either you’re new to our beautiful region of Cairns or you’ve been living under a rock, if you haven’t had the pleasure of hearing about Shad Wicka, a local radio identity that has his sights set on building a wonderful longterm project for Cairns Comedy. Shad had the ingenious idea of putting together Guilt Free Comedy - together with Steven Richards (Guilt Free Comedy) and Peter James (Laughing Heart comedy) - and couldn’t have fullfilled the vision without the help of the talented Catherine Pacey from Eato’s on Grafton Street. The vision is simple: to provide the audience with outstanding entertainment and laughter, and give new comedians a space to polish their set, while raising much needed cash for local charities - ALL drink sales go directly to various charities. Previous beneficiaries include Camp Quality, Booyah! and Oz Harvest. Guilt Free Comedy have also branched out into events at Cairns Dinner Theatre with various Australian and international comedians. It’s held on the last Friday of every month and they are currently on the lookout for a new space, as August marked the last time that pay-it-forward cafe Eatos’s will host the event. Shocking news, we know! Maybe you know the perfect place for them to make their next home? Ideally, it would be in the CBD, somewhere that is generally unused after hours and would (most importantly!) be in a position to support Guilt Free Comedy with the charitable side of the project so they can continue their philanthropy. If you’d like to get on board and offer a great venue - only once a month! - please get in contact via their Facebook page. And while you are there, ‘Like’ their page to follow their events. Tell your friends about this fun way to support local talent, with shows that give you the good feels!
REMEMBER Last Friday of every month, doors open at 7pm and show starts at 7.30pm.

EXCITING TALENT JOINS THE FIRM P e t e r s
B o s e l
L a w y e r s
UNMATCHED experience and a proud commitment to supporting Cairns is what drives the team at Peters Bosel Lawyers. From their involvement in the local community to the staff they hire, experienced firm partners Mark Peters and Julie Bosel know that providing quality, strategic and professional legal advice is just part of the service they provide. And now Peters Bosel is continuing that local tradition with the addition of commercial litigation and employment law solicitor Madonna Galeano. “The opportunity to work exclusively in employment law and workplace relations was very attractive,” she says. “I really enjoy the challenges of the work and I’m very lucky to be working with Mark and Julie, who are the most experienced in town.”
“We’re
thrilled to have her”
Words by Michael Serenc Photos by Blueclick Photography
A born and bred Cairns girl, Madonna has a stellar track record in a wide range of disputes including award entitlements, show cause processes, unfair dismissal applications and defending Fair Work prosecutions. The promising lawyer says she loves working in her home city, helping clients achieve the legal outcome which best suits their individual needs. “It’s very rewarding because you’re helping people build their businesses by drafting workplace policies and assisting employers to navigate day-to-day workplace issues to maximise productivity,” she says. “I really see employment law as an area of growth and the way in which employment will be undertaken in the future will be different. I’m really looking forward to working through those challenges as they arise and Peters Bosel Lawyers is the perfect place to do that.” The firm has the most experienced team of employment law and workplace relations lawyers outside of south-east Queensland, providing their clients with first rate advice on areas such as executive contracts, terminations, subcontracts, enterprise agreements, restructures and redundancies, discrimination, workplace investigations and much more. “We have a great depth of experience, we know the law in the area very well and that’s what sets us apart,” Julie says. “We also have a very firm grasp of local issues, the dynamics of how this city operates and what’s important in doing business in Cairns.” Both Mark and Julie are full of praise for their new recruit Madonna, seeing a locally grown product as an absolute asset to Peters Bosel’s local focus. “We’re thrilled to have her,” Mark says. “She already had a reputation as a young
lawyer in town who is very good at commercial litigation and employment law.” After joining forces with Julie in 2011 to create Peters Bosel Lawyers, Mark says the firm has been on a rapid growth trajectory as local businesses seek advice in the ever-changing field of workplace relations and employment law. “We have top people that can match any competitor in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne and we’re right on the doorstep for local clients,” he says. “Cairns has been through a very difficult time financially, right from the time we set up in 2011. But we’ve grown well through the period since then. Seeing where Cairns is now heading, I think we’re all feeling really buoyant about the future.” With three lawyers, two support staff and a business manager, the firm is set to grow even more as their client base expands. “We work with a number of established, high-profile local businesses and entities that demonstrate we have a commitment to the local region,” Julie says. The firm also plays an active role in the Cairns community, proud of its buy local policy and regularly gives pro bono legal advice to a range of local not-for-profit organisations and charities. “We are very focused on using local services for anything, whether it be design and fit-outs for buildings, computer services, stationery supplies, printing or equipment. And local businesses are really supportive of us,” Mark says. “There’s definitely a bright future for Cairns and we are excited about our firm’s future with the addition of a top young lawyer like Madonna to our team,” concludes Julie.

WHETHER you’re in need of reconstructive plastic surgery or some cosmetic work, finding the right surgeon can be challenging. But for Dr Marcia Mickelburgh of Trinity Breast and Plastic Surgery, quality, experience and patient care are all front of mind. Based in Cairns, Marcia can perform a wide range of procedures including breast reconstruction, breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift, rhinoplasty, hand surgery, skin cancer surgery and much, much more. Plastic and reconstructive surgery can be a vulnerable experience for any patient and Marcia says she takes the utmost care in making them feel as comfortable as possible.

“My aim is to have high quality patient outcomes and for surgery to be performed as safely as possible.” Marcia says being based in the city eliminates the risk of “cosmetic tourism” for patients, who can access quality and affordable plastic and reconstructive surgery on their doorstep. “People should be aware that what they want to have done can be provided in their home town. They don’t need to travel,” she says. “You shouldn’t be disadvantaged simply because you choose to live in Far North Queensland.”

DRIVING DIGITAL INNOVATION
Adam Guerin

DON’T know your SEO from your SEM? Are you trying to gain a foothold for your business in the competitive world of social media? Then Adam Guerin is here to help. The SEO Shop owner loves to educate his clients on the immense benefits of digital exposure, which involves both Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM)/Pay Per Click Advertising. “For most people, they want their business to work in the digital age,” Adam explains. “The most common service I do is free, which is answering a phone call from a local business owner who might say “Mate, I’m stuffed, business is going down. I used to be in the Yellow Pages but they want $20,000 to advertise and I can’t afford it and there’s 300 people in Cairns doing what I do. Can you help?”. “That’s the start of the conversation and from there I can tell them what their options are.”
The SEO Shop can teach clients SEO, which uses certain keywords to attract customers to your website through Google searches and SEM or Pay Per Click advertising, where you pay Google to display an advertisement relevant to the customer’s search.
not all about just sales “andIt’sadvertising where you go out and sell a package,” Adam says. “Clients are really picky. They know what they want. For some it’s that their brand and business gets visibility. For others, they want to be number one on Google for a pre-set series of keywords and search terms.”

The SEO Shop
Recognising a niche in the market for SEO and SEM education instead of just providing businesses a service, Adam started The SEO Shop six years ago in Perth. A visit to Cairns by his wife two years ago prompted Adam to move to the city, where he has been able to tap in to a market brimming with potential. With no lock-in contracts and an affordable pay-as-you-go service, Adam is able to build trust and rapport with his many clients, ranging from sole trader entrepreneurs to large, established firms. “They all essentially want the same thing – more business in an ever-competitive and tightening market,” he says. “That’s what makes me passionate about it. I enjoy helping my clients succeed.”
PROMOTING A LOVE OF LEARNING
Words by Janie Barton
TA S E a r l y L e a r n i n g C e n t r e
One of the best ways to put your children on the path to a successful education is to start early and enrol them in TAS Kindy and Prep classes. “Research tells us that positive early learning experiences help shape brain development and sets the foundation for success in later learning, behaviour and health,” TAS Principal Paul Sjogren. “We work in partnership with parents and carers to ensure we are providing the best educational opportunities for each child. By working together, we can help them to establish a love of learning.” TAS Kindy classes stand above the rest for a number of reasons. They offer a small, personal learning environment, nature play within magnificent grounds and a buddy system with a Year 2 or 3 TAS student. “This program integrates children into junior school from the beginning and assists when Kindergarten students graduate to Prep,” Mr Sjogren said. “It makes them feel part of the larger school, so commencing in Junior School is not so daunting for them.” Kindy students also participate in full primary school Sports Carnivals, have regular access to the TAS junior school library and are introduced to the Prep program and facilities, making the transition to junior school seamless. Prep students are also fortunate to get the best start in their education. They have the benefit of learning from experienced teachers who specialise in Early Years Learning, class sizes that allow individualised
instruction and specialist music, Japanese, swimming and physical education programs. “We also have a genuine open-door policy and encourage parent engagement,” Mr Sjogren added. The school’s Prep classes also offer cutting-edge teaching and learning technology, reading readiness and perceptual motor skills training programs, all in purpose- built learning environments. It also includes development of the literacy and numeracy skills needed for students to be successful at school, like Jump Start, a learning program that provides an enjoyable and nurturing start to education, which includes; Kitchen Garden and healthy eating program. “Families tell us that a Kindy and Prep education at TAS sets young students up for the behaviours needed to excel in life,” Principal Sjogren added. “Our passionate teachers ensure each child receives a high level of individual attention to develop their intellectual, social, emotional and physical skills.”

EXCELLING AT EDUCATION Words by Janie Barton
TA S L e a d e r s O f T h e F u t u r e Trinity Anglican School (TAS) is highly respected for its strong academic achievements where graduating students consistently attain high results, and there is more than one secret to the school’s outstanding success. A contributing part of its success is the fact that students love going to TAS. The school cultivates an environment where it’s “cool” for students to try their best academically and provides a wide range of free tutoring options for all. They also benefit from and enjoy the relationships they build with their teachers and the fact that their teachers want them to learn. “We have terrific teachers who are genuinely interested in helping each student reach their academic personal best,” Principal Paul Sjogren said.
They’re happy “ to spend time with
students outside of class helping them.
”

Parents also recognise the dedication of TAS educators. “In our parent survey responses, parents consistently recognise and commend the efforts and professionalism of our terrific staff.”
CairnsLife 17 Magazine
Once again, the school’s NAPLAN results this year were very strong. At each year level, in each of the five strands, students were at or near the top for all Cairns schools. “However, we are more interested in how they have progressed over the last two years since last sitting NAPLAN,” Principal Sjogren said. “We were really pleased that our students improved at a higher rate than the national mean improvement. “This is even more pleasing because in most cases the students measured their improvement against a high starting point two years ago. We also feed the data back from NAPLAN to identify areas where we can improve curriculum or pedagogy, which creates a continual selfimprovement loop.” The high standard coeducational environment of TAS is built upon a framework of Anglican values where students can experience the highly successful educational journey Anglican schools provide. “Our students also learn the value of service to others and to be grateful for their lives, including that they have been given the opportunity to attend TAS. “All students are given the opportunity and support to shine. Our core belief is that every student can reach their academic potential, and we work hard to assist them to do so.”

A LONG-HELD desire to help those doing it tough is what drives solicitor Andrea Turner every time she walks through the office front door. The Turner Freeman Associate and Cairns branch manager has a big responsibility, dealing with any number of clients in compensation law and superannuation disability claims. The daughter of a British police officer, Andrea developed a clear sense of right and wrong early in life. Those principles were crystallised when she started working as a Compulsory Third Party (CTP) claims manager for an insurance firm in 2005 before deciding to study law at Charles Darwin University. “I realised some of these people have gone from having everyday jobs and
a normal life to being involved in a motor vehicle accident and their life being turned upside down,” Andrea explains.
when “That’s I realised
I wanted to be on the other side of the table helping people through the process.
”
Admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of Queensland and High Court of Australia in 2010, Andrea ensures her clients get the best possible advice CairnsLife 20 Magazine
and most importantly, a sympathetic ear. “For me, it’s the challenge of being able to try and help someone who is vulnerable,” she says. “I’ve been doing this for so long that I look back and think how privileged we are that our clients are letting us into their lives.” The mum-of-two runs a tight ship at her Mulgrave Rd office where she was named a finalist in the Manager of the Year category in the 2017 Cairns Business Woman of the Year Awards. But fighting for the underdog will always be Andrea’s passion. “We will try and help anyone that we can.”

SOLVING THE PROPERTY PUZZLE Trevor Gard N o r t h e r n P ro p e r t y Va l u e r s STRONG local ties and an unmatched industry pedigree has Northern Property Valuers excited about their future. With a total of 12 staff spread over four offices in Cairns, Mareeba, Papua New Guinea and the Sunshine Coast, Northern Property Valuers have a strong presence in regional Queensland, built on more than 30 years of knowledge and experience. Since taking over the business five years ago from veteran valuer Max Dickenson, managing director Trevor Gard has gone from strength to strength, together with colleague Bruce Coates, who has part ownership of Northern Property Valuers’ offices in Mareeba, Papua New Guinea and the Sunshine Coast. “We’ve doubled our turnover from five years ago,” Trevor says. “We have a lot of drive and determination in what we do. We relate to a lot of small businesses in the area because we are one. “We’ve been ranked very highly amongst the major banks but we also look after smaller financial institutions such as credit unions and building societies.” Rural, commercial and residential property valuations can all be performed by the firm, which has now added yet another string to its bow of expertise. The business recently became Cairns’ first licensed Buyer’s Agency. Our clientele range from small commercial investors to large international companies, all looking for a property that suits their particular needs. “We’re physically out on the ground looking for properties for these investors,” Trevor says. “Through our local knowledge, and using our extensive database of properties throughout the region,

we provide a professional and thorough service.” It’s an area which Trevor knows has solid growth potential, as the business continues to diversify in a time of increasing competition. “We’re now a complete, professional property firm, not just a valuation firm,” he says. “Mal Floyd has joined our agency in Cairns. With his 30 years of experience in real estate, he has become a real asset to our business. Through our database and his network, we’re able to find the right property for our various clients.” With a long family history in Far North Queensland dating back to his grandfather on his mother’s side, who owned a real estate business in Cairns in the early 1900’s, and his grandfather on his father’s side owning a cane farm in Ingham, Trevor believes he has been guided towards his current position running Northern Property Valuers. He loves nothing more than getting out on the open road to meet his diverse array of clients. “I’m not stuck in an office. I love the Far North and it gives me an opportunity to travel along many of the region’s backroads. There’s some truly glorious hidden places!” he says.
In all our “ locations we have created boutique, professional offices providing a personal service.

GAME CHANGER IN HEALTH INDUSTRY Words by Janie Barton | Photos by Silvia Mogorovich
Peter Daley Cryo Australia A new health revolution has arrived in Cairns, and it’s about to help you feel more revived, invigorated and healthier than you have felt in a long time. Cryotherapy, which originated in Japan, has been taking Europe and the United States by storm and Cryo Australia, which opened in Brisbane in 2016, has brought these noninvasive, hyper-cooling treatments to Cairns. Cryotherapy is a process of using cold temperatures for weight loss, improving recovery up to eight times faster from injuries, decreasing pain, slowing cell aging and enhancing overall health, to name just some of its amazing benefits. “It really is cutting-edge technology, said Cryo Australia’s General Manager Nathan Canilho. “Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen vapours safely to help people through a myriad of different treatments, and has been delivering outstanding results.” Cryo Australia uses its state-of-theart Cryosauna to cool customers’ body temperatures for a maximum of three minutes. The Cryo X sauna is the coldest of it’s kind in the world going down to a temperature of -196 degrees. The body’s natural reaction to the cold sends the blood to the vital organs where it is then nourished, once exiting the sauna the body then increases blood flow to the skin, which delivers oxygen, enzymes and nutrients throughout the body and in the process allows clients to burn up to 800 calories. The result is inflammation is reduced, muscular endurance is enhanced and energy levels are highly boosted. “Yes, it’s very cold, but is absolutely invigorating,” Nathan said. “Unlike in an ice bath, water is not touching your skin so your body stays completely dry. After the three minutes when you come out of the Cryosauna you feel incredibly invigorated and the results people get are just amazing.” Cryo Australia are also the research and development partners with the Brisbane Broncos, who are using a portable cryo chamber with the results being analysed by the University of Queensland to study the effects of the treatment on the athletes, including game performance and recovery from injury. Cryotherapy is also excellent for anti-aging
It really is “ cutting-edge technology” facial, neck and hand treatments. Trained staff use Localised Cryotherapy to reduce any inflammation and puffiness, while also decreasing the size of customer’s pores. As the temperature decreases, the body responds by producing more collagen. From this reaction, fine lines and wrinkles begin to disappear. Another amazing service Cryo Australia provide is the Cryo Sculpting Fat Reduction treatment which uses cool temperature technology to spot reduce fat in stubborn areas such as love handles, stomach, back and thighs. The best thing is that it is extremely affordable compared to any other competitor on the market Peter Daley opened the Cairns clinic in late August after experiencing first hand the results of Cryotherapy in Brisbane. “I suffered from a bad back as well as tennis elbow, and the results after Cryotherapy were quite amazing,” he said. “I’m pain free now. I know the benefits of Cryotherapy, and I’m passionate about sharing them with others.” Peter said Cryotherpay is also excellent for weight loss, inflammation, skin rejuvenation and treating acne, psoriasis and eczema and rheumatoid arthritis. Another ground-breaking health treatment offered by Cryo Australia is through its IV iRefresh vitamin lounge, a modern hydration and nutritional therapy through IV infusions. “The IV iRefresh therapy is fantastic,” Peter said. “It’s great for rehydration, boosting your immune system, jet lag, detoxifying the body, hangovers and increasing strength and energy levels.” Cryo Australia offers eight different IV options, all packed with pure vitamins and essential minerals. “The IV therapy really exploded in Brisbane,” Peter said. “Customers see the effects immediately, especially those who are feeling sick and run down.” Cairns is the second clinic in the Cryo Australia group with other clinics opening in the coming months in Sydney and Brisbane with plans to expand into all States and major cities. “Cryotherapy and IV therapy are game changers,” Peter said. “They’re really affordable and the most important thing is that they really do work.”

GET THAT WINNING SMILE
Dr Rhonda Coyne
Words by Michael Serenc
Dr Rhonda Coyne believes the key to being successful is simple – just smile! The NQ Ortho owner and qualified orthodontist is passionate about her profession, always putting the comfort and well-being of her patients first.

“
Changing someone’s smile can actually change their life quite significantly
”
“I like to empower my patients. It’s more than just having straight teeth,” Rhonda explained.
“Changing someone’s smile can actually change their life quite significantly,” she says.
“It’s everything that goes with that, such as building self-esteem and looking at the positives as much as possible.”
“One of the nicest comments I had was that I made a young boy as beautiful on the outside as he was on the inside. It was very special and rewarding to see that.”
A spurned dream to become a fighter pilot didn’t stop Rhonda from soaring to success in her younger days, instead putting her energy into studying dentistry and later, orthodontics, at university. After joining her father Dr Laurie Coyne’s family practice in the late 1990s, Rhonda now oversees three practices in Cairns, Innisfail and Atherton.
Children doing it tough are not forgotten by Rhonda either, who performs pro-bono work as part of the Australian Society of Orthodontists’ Give a Smile charity. Using the latest technology available in orthodontics, such as aligners, iTero digital scanning software and the Dental Monitoring phone app, NQ Ortho is able to give patients the right treatment with minimal fuss.
CairnsLife 28 Magazine
“We really embrace user technology and try to make it as accessible and affordable as possible,” Rhonda says. “I love what I do and I like educating people about oral health.” In fact, Rhonda is such an advocate for new technologies that she has addressed major orthodontics conferences in Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore on the use of aligners and digital scanning. With first class orthodontic care and flexible payment plans available for patients, there’s no doubt Rhonda sees a bright future for NQ Ortho in the region. “The industry is in a bit of a paradigm shift as we switch from analogue to digital technology and I see it as a great challenge and opportunity,” she says. “What we can offer people now is so much more than just braces. It’s simply amazing and I think we’re in for a pretty exciting time.”

DEFENCE BLOOD CHALLENGE
Every year teams from the Navy, Army, Air Force and Defence Public Servants compete to give the most blood donations to the Red Cross Blood Service and save the most lives.
Last year, the Challenge resulted in 6,991 donations, which saved up to 20,700 lives. This year, the target is again 7,000 donations – and you can help us achieve it.
The Defence Blood Challenge is now in its ninth year and this year is poised to be the most successful yet. The Challenge runs from 1 September to 8 December and friends and families of those in the services can join in.
Donations can be whole blood or plasma, and every donation you make after registering for Navy’s ‘Red25’ team, counts to Navy’s tally, as part of the Red Cross Blood Service campaign to raise 25 per cent of the nation’s blood supply through corporate challenges.
New donors and existing donors who may not have made an appointment in a while are encouraged to support the local Defence presence of HMAS Cairns and give blood for the Navy team. This year there’s a ‘push for plasma’ as donations can be made as frequently as every two weeks. While there’s a bit of friendly competition between services, the main aim is to motivate people to donate and save lives.
So get onboard and support your sailors, register for Red25 Navy. To enroll to donate blood or plasma, visit www.donateblood.com. au or call 13 19 45. Registration for Red25 Navy can also be done via the website or over the phone. You can keep track of progress during the challenge at the Red Cross Blood Service website and then following the links to Red25 Result Tallies.

CELEBRATING THE PAST, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FUTURE CHRISTOPHER Zilm may have only been principal of Cairns State High School for 12 months, but already he reckons he’s the luckiest bloke in the world. In a career spanning 30 years, the veteran educator is honoured to be part of the school’s centenary celebrations and excited about what the future holds.
Chris Zilm
“It’s an exciting future.”
“The history of Cairns High is really the history of Cairns,” says Christopher. “With our centenary, we’ve got an opportunity to look back on the history of the school and we’re bringing a lot of old staff and students back for a trip down memory lane. But it’s also an excellent opportunity to decide where we’re heading and what we want to do. “It’s been a year of so many highs and that’s been fantastic because the students at this school just never stop amazing you.” With more than 1600 students and 160 staff, Christopher says Cairns State High is “future-proofing” the city’s next generation of leaders with a focus on academic and extracurricular excellence. Programs and activities such as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, languages, performing and visual arts and music have opened up a range of pathways for students – an initiative driven by former long-serving principal Bernie MacKenzie. The school has even established a partnership with Advance Cairns, aimed at giving young people a voice in the future economic and infrastructure development of the city. “My job now is to keep that going and adapt it to the modern age,” Christopher explains. “We want to make sure our young people are ready for anything that happens in the modern world, which is fastpaced and changing. “In a big school you want to make sure you have the systems in place that support individual growth and development.” As the 18th principal to serve the school, Christopher is all too aware of the importance of Cairns State High’s values of excellence, respect, responsibility and resilience as his students prepare to take on the world. “Our vision statement is to be the best we can be. It underpins everything we stand for,” he says. “It’s an exciting future.”

She is a transparent and honest lady who led by example, always presented well and had high expectations of both herself and others. an award for Leadership in the Profession, following 21 years as a principal at three high schools. As a part of this award it was also noted that he chaired teams that go into schools and enable them to gain Council of International Schools international accreditation.
Originally a Deputy Principal at Cairns State High in the late 80s Trevor Gordon became Principal in 2000. Trevor was keen on football, cricket and tennis however had gained a scholarship at James Cook University in Townsville while he was studying Science there. Part of the requirements of the scholarship was to teach for a least two years. Therefore he completed his Diploma of Education at the University of Queensland and went to teach Mathematics at Sarina State High School. He and his wife Yvonne taught for a year in Mt Isa before he became Head of Maths at Mareeba State High School. Yvonne became the Head of the History Department there. After nine years they and their two daughters moved to Cairns. Trevor worked at Woree High in its inaugural year before his term as Deputy Principal at Cairns State High School. He was then promoted to Principal at Biloela State High School with Yvonne as Deputy. After three years Trevor was then Mareeba State High School’s Principal for six and a half years before taking on the role of Principal at Cairns State High School. The role of technology was of high focus during his tenure at Cairns High. He wanted Cairns High to “always seen to be at the cutting edge of change”. Just prior to his appointment Cairns High was chosen as one of the schools to be part of the Secondary School Renewal Program and granted considerable money for facilities upgrades. Trevor announced his retirement at the 2010 Annual Queensland Secondary Principals Conference where he was presented with
He is honoured to have been involved in the lives of the young people who have walked the hallways of the school over the years, who have successfully established themselves, many achieving extraordinary things,
Since leaving Cairns High Mr Gordon has continued to work in education and has had the opportunity to visit schools in all parts of the country. Trevor enjoys his new life in education but does miss the achievements and challenges that occupied every day at Cairns High. He feels that the heroes of education are the school leaders and teachers who, on a daily basis work with young people, encouraging them and challenging them, and experience the joys and disappointments, that are inevitable; and at Cairns High “they are an extraordinarily talented and dedicated group”.
“Equally importantly, I am convinced that the interactions with students from diverse backgrounds will give students the tolerance and flexibility so necessary to build a cohesive and happy society” STATED MR TREVOR GORDON.
He wishes all members, past and present, of the Cairns High community all the best for the Centenary Celebrations and is looking forward to catching up with many.
Mr Bernie MacKenzie is extremely and justifiably proud of the achievements of the students and teachers at Cairns High. As Principal from 1979 to 1999, Bernie came to Cairns High with his wife Avryl and young family after a 20 year teaching career, specialising in Maths and Science in both rural and central Queensland. In fact it was during his teaching post in Winton that Bernie discovered by accident his talent for singing after he was invited to perform at a wedding. It was this occasion that would lead to his lifelong joy and interest in singing and performing, including a Lifetime membership within the Cairns Choral Society. Bernie’s goal for his 20 years of principalship was the achievement of excellence in performance of students in all aspects of endeavour associated with their life at school, and it was this school life which he, and his team, wanted to make as rich and potentially fulfilling as it possibly could be. The concept of excellence continues to permeate the school into every corner of student and teacher endeavour. What he created at Cairns High was an environment which stimulated the usage of these qualities proposed by the students towards the highest levels of performance possible. Bernie feels enormously grateful that so many people were able to achieve so much during those twenty years, to make Cairns High what it has grown in to. A school that is capable

“influenced I hope by the broad philosophy that whatever their talents, Cairns State High School was able to play a major role in their development and helped to launch them well into a successful and happy future”, MR BERNIE MACKENZIE COMMENTED.
Mr MacKenzie is very proud of the school’s community spirit, which has seen the community cope with adversity, trauma and grief experienced on 4 February 1987 when the Gillies Highway Bus Accident occurred. Mr MacKenzie was rewarded for his efforts both on the day and in the years after with a deserved Cairns Citizen of the Year Award in 1988. The 30th anniversary of the tragic bus accident was commemorated at a memorial service at St Monica’s on Saturday 4 February 2017. Mr MacKenzie sang the Lord’s Prayer, as he did at the original Memorial Service on 4 February 1987. In May 1999, Bernie was awarded with a lifetime achievement award at the Queensland Secondary Principals Association conference for his services to education. As a dedication to Bernie’s contribution to Cairns High and the school community, Cairns High will open MacKenzie Walk on Friday, 15 September 2017. The Walk is a beautiful shady decking area which encapsulates the rainforest area, enhancing the natural gardens and also includes a pergola and seating for students.

THE OLLIE McGILL TRIO JAZZ UP NORTH 2017 SATURDAY 7 OCTOBER We all know him as keyboardist and backing vocalist for the world’s favourite party band, The Cat Empire, now Ollie McGill returns to Tanks to perform his progressive style of jazz with his new project The Ollie McGill Trio. Aside from his membership in one of Australia’s most successful musical exports, The Cat Empire, Ollie plays part in several other Melbourne-based bands including The Conglomerate (a modern jazz quartet), Peaking Duck, The Future, 77 and Past Ollie’s Bedtime. A producer and multi-instrumentalist, Ollie also composed the top 10 iTunes hit song ‘Dumb Ways to Die” for metro Trains Melbourne. The video went viral, achieving over 6 million views in three days. Describing their sound as electronic inspired jazz with progressive rock influences, prepare yourselves for an auditory experience unlike anything you’ve heard before.

He sings, plays a multitude of instruments, tours the world with one of Australia’s greatest party bands, and makes catchy advertising campaigns to boot. Ollie McGill is a quiet yet powerful force often found behind the scenes of success. Born Oliver James McGill, Ollie is the keyboard magician and a backing vocalist for The Cat Empire (TCE) - an iconic Australian ska and jazz band formed almost 20 years ago. The longevity and success of TCE has allowed the nine-piece party band a continuous world-tour roster that has spanned two decades, including regular stop-offs at the Tanks Arts Centre in Cairns. In June last year, TCE played not one, not two, but three sold out shows at the Tanks due to popular demand. In October this year, Ollie will take to the Tanks stage as part of the 2017 Jazz Up North music series, but without his Empire. “It always feels strange going on the road with a band other than The Cat Empire,” Ollie admits. “To have a different bunch of ‘cats’ around you is an unfamiliar feeling, but it is heaps of fun getting to know new musicians and being on the road is the best way to get to know someone.” This will be Ollie’s third trip to the tropics in three years. Last year Ollie joined fellow TCE band member Harry James Angus as part of another jazz side-project. During their visit, Ollie played an intimate gig with Cairns band The Montgomery Brothers. “I met the guys from The Montgomery Brothers at the Tanks Arts Centre in 2016,” Ollie says. “We were at the Tank 5 residency house where Sahara Beck’s band was having a little shindig. Remarkably, there are two pianos there – back to back; conducive to some pretty exciting jams, which we did until the sun came up.” The jamming led to Ollie’s recent guest performer spot for The Montgomery Brothers’ shows in Melbourne and Sydney earlier this month, as part of the band’s album release tour. From experimental funk, to classic dreamy jazz, Ollie crosses instruments and projects like the rolling waves of the ocean. In 2012 Ollie added composer to his plethora of accolades; writing the music and helping produce the acclaimed Australian public service announcement “Dumb Ways to Die”, for Metro Trains Melbourne. The campaign was a massive success, going viral and achieving over 6 million views in just three days, and reaching the top 10 of the iTunes charts within 24 hours. After years of mucking around on synthesisers and sound toys, crafting weird and wonderful sounds, Ollie has made a return to his original weapon of choice – the organic sound of the piano. Joined by James Hauptmann on drums and Jonathan Zwartz on bass, Ollie describes his latest venture, The Ollie McGill Trio as a progressive jazz ensemble. “It has a groove, it is harmonically adventurous; it’s new and exciting and has a bit of edge,” Ollie explains. “I’d never had a band that was purely my own. I had a collection of tunes I had written over the years so when I moved to Sydney about 7 years ago, I hooked up with Jonathan and James, booked a gig and off we went.” Catch Ollie when he performs with The Ollie McGill Trio at the Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday 7 October as part of the 2017 World Music series. NO #1 FEMALE BUSINESS COACH CHARMAIN CAMPBELL AND GOLD MEDAL WINTER OLYMPIAN STEVEN BRADBURY TOUR REGIONAL AREAS FOR BUSINESS ROADSHOW?
The Go for Gold Regional Business Roadshow will be hitting the highway and coming to Townsville, to make sure regional businesses don’t fall or lose direction. These game-changing workshops, brought to you by The Driven Business Edge with the support of Advance Queensland and ADPR Media, will travel to Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Gladstone and Rockhampton. The roadshow will provide specialist advice to small businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs looking to survive and thrive beyond the crucial first years. Regional businesses will get access to The Driven Business Edge director Charmain Campbell -- the #1 Female Business Action Coach in the Asia Pacific region and among the Top 10 Action Coaches globally. Charmain Campbell said there are more than 414,000 small businesses in Queensland and ensuring they have the tools to succeed is key to growing employment and the economy. “ABS statistics show that more than 60
percent of small businesses cease operating within the first three years of starting so it is imperative that anyone starting a business is equipped with everything they need to ensure the success of their venture.” she said. Charmain, who learned everything she knows from owning a regional business and 10 years of working 1-2-1 with over 120 businesses across numerous industries, will be joined by Steven Bradbury, the Aussie Winter Olympian gold medallist. Steven loves that his strategies for success in business and in life can inspire and help people. “I talk about real life and about some of the lessons and experiences that I’ve had through Olympics and business and hopefully inspire people to try a bit harder in what their pursuits are,” he said. HORRIBLE BOSSES EVA GRABNER Eva Grabner Managing Director Elite Executive Pty Ltd www.eliteexecutive.com.au 0409 59 11 88
Throughout our career we will be exposed to so many different personalities, from colleagues to clients to bosses. And no doubt a few of us will have a few ‘horrible boss’ stories tucked away for that dinner party reveal after a few wines! I for one, have had many Managers during my numerous lives and careers, ranging from a crazy Austrian hotelier who measured the liquor bottles in the bar to ensure we weren’t filling them with cheap replacements, to an amazing Chief Purser on ships who made margaritas and played The Offspring during meetings (so much fun!). I have also been lucky to have had a Manager who supported and mentored me wholeheartedly and whose advice I remember to this day. Good and Bad leadership. It’s everywhere, right? Nowadays people are more ‘emotionally intelligent’, not like the old days when you were yelled at until you perfected whatever task was expected of you. Now there are many different policies, rules and laws to prevent bosses from getting away with inappropriate behaviour. But it’s not always about behaviour is it? It’s about support, empowerment, advocacy and fairness. I read recently a report that revealed that “Taking credit for employee’s work” is the most unacceptable boss behaviour for workers and as much as 17% have actually quit their jobs as a result! Further behaviours included: • Not trusting or empowering employees • Lack of care if employees are overworked • Not appearing to advocate for employees in terms of compensation • Recruiting or promoting the wrong people Interestingly, male and female employees rated bad boss behaviours differently. Women rated 19 of the 24 listed ‘bad’ behaviours as being more unacceptable compared to the male respondents. Behaviours that men rated as more unacceptable compared to women included “refusing to friend you on social media”, “not liking to spend time together outside of work” and “requiring you to take personal days for mental wellbeing”. 44% of all respondents in the report said that they have quit a job primarily because of their bosses. Top characteristics that made them leave include “management style”, “a condescending attitude”,
“meanness or a bad temper”, “inappropriate behaviour” and “harassment of employees”. Is this surprising that nowadays people will quit over a bad boss? It’s a horrible situation considering how much time we spend in the workplace and I understand why some situations can be too hard to deal with and in some cases, just easier to quit. So how do we reduce these figures? Should we speak up? I recommend you do. If you are going through a rough time with a manager or supervisor, speak to your HR Manager and ask their advice. They should be able to assist you in taking action whether it be making a formal complaint or confronting the individual with support, or just some direction on how to proceed. For those who work in a small business and may not have a HR Manager, write down your grievances, sit down with your boss and be honest. You never know, in some cases perhaps they may be unaware of their behaviour or actions and how they affect you. How can employers improve? How can you keep your employees happy? Well, it’s simple really - ask them. Have regular one on one sessions where you listen and they speak. Encourage an environment where they can speak openly, even to criticize you, without you taking offence. None of us are perfect, we are all learning every day and perhaps if we both took the time to sit down, talk and hear each other out, those statistics above would drop. I’d love to hear about your good and bad boss experiences (anonymously of course), so feel free to email me at eva@eliteexecutive.com.au There may even be a prize for the best (or worst!) story! “What annoys you most in your workplace?” – tell us and be in the running to win a dinner for two at NOA Restaurant, Edgehill The last two months have been about family law mediation, which is serious stuff. This month I am back to workplace disputes and because it has been a long year I wanted to lighten the mood a little. I think that a workplace dispute often starts from an incident that in itself, might be quite insignificant but it is then snowballs to become more serious. A classic example is the ‘stealing’ of food from the office communal fridge; I heard a story where it started out as a bit of a prank but ended up in a serious dispute between colleagues resulting in someone being sacked.
I also did a workplace mediation where the boss was severely criticised by other staff for use of the “F-word” in the workplace. There were other issues about this particular boss, but the most common complaint was the loud swearing; it made other staff feel uncomfortable; some even felt bullied. It didn’t end well. And what about the “ not answering of phones” “taking too long at lunch”..these are all common workplace gripes that if not properly addressed can lead to serious disputes. If people were more aware of what bothers other people, these disputes might happen less often! So here is your chance to say what annoys you the most - about your boss, your staff, your fellow workers – and who knows, maybe someone reading next months article might see something happening in their workplace in time to do something about it, before it becomes major. I look forward to hearing what you have to say! M: 0428 526 568 P: (07) 4212 5666 E: nardine@collierlawyers.com.au W: www.collierlawyers.com.au

THE POWER OF PR WHY SPONSORSHIP?
DAN A E J O NE S
There is no question in business that we get asked to contribute to so many organisations and sponsor so many causes. And it’s sometimes easier to just say no so people stop bothering you and asking you to put your hand in your pocket. But I’d like you to think about it differently for a moment. Have you ever sat down and really thought about what organisations, charities, not for profits or causes align with you and your business? The cause doesn’t need to be associated with your industry, but the organisation might embody a whole heap of goodness that is important in life and to you and your team emotionally. I encourage you to sit down with your team and take the time to brainstorm this. Then choose one or a handful of entities you wish to support. Now I don’t want you to think that you need to contribute significantly to all of these organisations, it might be something considered quite small for you, but could be received as something very big for that organisation.
Da nae J o n es i s P ri n c ip a l o f P R & Ma rket i n g f i rm D a n a e J o n e s Cons ultin g e: danae@d an aej o n es .c o m .a u w : www.d an aej o n es. c o m .a u
If you don’t have surplus cash to donate, consider in-kind support. This could be demonstrated in a variety of ways – here are just a few ideas: • A member of your team sitting on their Board or Committee and offering your skill sets to that organisation on a pro bono basis • Offering to initiate a third-party fundraising event to help raise funds for the organisation. It could be something as simple as you decide to chip in $1,000 and you ask your team to come up with a fun way to match the donation. It might be a morning tea or a dress a certain colour day to work in return for gold coin donations from your staff. This might be a regular activity that you run over a period of 3 months to build up the fundraising bucket for the organisation before you do the official hand over. • It could even be something as simple as purchasing tables at one of the charity events throughout the year and encouraging all your big spending clients to come along and also help raise money for the cause.
My point is, sponsorship does not have to be for big business, everyone in business can get involved in some way shape or form and attract a mutual benefit from it. Sponsorship Marketing has been defined as: “A corporate sponsorship is a form of marketing in which a corporation pays for all or some of the costs associated with a project or program in exchange for recognition.” Source: Investopedia Sponsorship is a Marketing and PR tool just like any other form that you can use in your business to help you achieve your desired goals. Before entering into a sponsorship agreement you need to first be clear about your reasons for doing it, how much you want to spend on it, and what you want to achieve from it. Do you want to do it as part of your marketing mix, or do you just want to do it because it makes you ‘feel good’ (i.e. contributing to your child’s school or sporting team) with no expectation of anything in return. Once you are clear on what you do or don’t want to get out of it, then you can start to work up your sponsorship plan. Let’s assume you do want to achieve recognition from the sponsorship – then you need to develop a sponsorship strategy so you achieve best BANG for BUCK. Just some benefits of Corporate Sponsorship include: • Improving your public image or perception in the marketplace as a ‘good corporate citizen’ • Increase your degree of influence • Increase your brand awareness • Increase employee satisfaction • Increase sales • Assist with market research • Target a niche group The key to the most successful Corporate Sponsorships is ‘mutually beneficial’ agreements.
INSURANCE A NATURAL FIT FOR HOMEMAKERS GRAHAM KOCH

When you think about insurance, you generally think about protecting things you can put a dollar value on. So when that insurance is for a person, the most obvious place to start is their income. But what if that person doesn’t have an income? Homemakers may not have an income, but there are few people more valuable.
• Trauma cover pays a lump sum if you are seriously injured in an accident, or if you are diagnosed with one of a number of serious medical conditions, like cancer and heart attack. The proceeds can be used to meet medical treatment costs as well as provide financial support if your spouse wishes to take time off work to look after you.
Unfortunately, homemakers often ‘slip through the cracks’ from an insurance perspective, as many families focus on insuring the main bread-winner.
• Living expense cover pays a monthly benefit if you are disabled by an illness or injury. Specifically designed for people who work casually, it can help you keep up with your everyday household expenses until you recover.
The problem with this is that homemakers are often playing two vital roles in any household. Firstly, they are providing care for children or possibly elderly relatives. Secondly, their contribution is enabling their partner to go to work.
•TPD cover pays a lump sum if you are totally and permanently disabled. This may help you repay debts and medical bills, make modifications to your home and motor vehicle as well as meet lifetime living costs.
If a homemaker gets seriously ill or injured, both of these roles are compromised. This may mean that a family needs to pay for some help around the home, or that the working partner has to take time off work to provide care. Either way it can be a very expensive exercise.
With so many different types of life insurance available, it’s important to discuss your own insurance needs with a financial adviser.
For example, the cost of hiring a live-in nanny is around $12-25 per hour while long-day care can cost up to $120 a day.1 With so much riding on their physical wellbeing, it makes sense for all homemakers to have a contingency plan for sickness or injury. What is life insurance? Life insurance pays you money if you suffer an injury or illness that is covered by your policy. There are many different types of insurance covers, including: • Life cover pays a lump sum if you die or are diagnosed with a terminal illness. The lump sum can be used to meet final expenses, pay off the family mortgage so that your family isn’t left without a home, fund future child education fees and set aside money to meet your family’s ongoing living needs.
How much does life insurance cost? Premiums vary depending on the product and a range of other factors. To reduce the impact of life insurance on your budget, you may be able to hold your life and TPD insurance cover inside super. This means you can pay your insurance premiums using super money. The best way to design an affordable insurance strategy that protects yourself, and your family, is to speak to a financial adviser. 1 ‘Cost of child care’ (July 2011) Childcare Support http://www.childcaresupport.org.au/ articles/cost-of-child-care Disclaimer This information may not be appropriate for your individual objectives, financial situation or needs and you should seek advice from your financial adviser before making any investment decisions. FATHER’S DAY
Father’s Day is celebrated across the nation this month, with many ways of celebrating Father’s Day. Around Australia, fathers, including grandfathers, will be lighting up the barbecue, enjoying a day out with the family, enjoying a quiet lunch with the family and of course regaling the family with endless “dad” jokes.
SUZANNE HADLEY
Dads across Australia play an important role in their children’s lives and in the lives of the family as a whole, not just on Father’s Day but throughout their entire lives. Studies of Australian fathers confirm that Dads play a vital role in their families and complementary to that of the mother. While some fathers may feel their role in the family is overlooked, particularly following separation, in our modern society it is recognised very well, that fathers play a pivotal role in the emotional well-being of their children; fathers are capable caretakers of their children. The last century thinking of looking at the father as financial provider and stern disciplinarian and the mother being the homemaker and primary parent has been replaced with a more equal role in modern family life. This change has been effected through the increased participation of both parents in the workforce and recognition by employers of the needs of the family taking a greater priority than there was in the past. Most parents play an equal role in raising the children, each parent defining their own role in the family. Parents who shared the parenting prior to separation expect to continue their parenting role post separation. Some parents find even greater satisfaction in their parenting role following separation, forging a new and warmer relationship with their children than before. The presumption of equal shared parenting
from separated households is reflected in the Family Law Act which in essence, uses shared parenting as the starting point and recognises that fathers play just as much a pivotal role in the emotional well-being of their children as do mothers. Fathers after all are multiskilled, moving between the roles of repairers of broken bikes, a wounded pride, a little girl’ s broken heart, stern disciplinarians, the finders of lost toys and the tellers of the world’s corniest jokes Fathers play an important role in the development of who their children are now and the adults they will become. Girls have Dad as their role model of what a good man is. Boys too learn how to treat a woman by observation of their father’s relationship with the adult women in his life, the child’s mother, grandmothers and aunts. How a man treats these women impacts in turn on the adult relationships children form Children with engaged Dads in their lives, who have positive role models and a good relationship with their fathers, have better adult outcomes. Various studies have found links between fathering (co-parenting and parental warmth) and children’s socio-emotional and learning outcomes , even after taking into account the contribution of mothers. For children and families, fathering really “matters”. There are tangible benefits to be gained from an actively involved father in families, no matter what the status of the family may be. This Father’s day, Dads across Australia are being there, actively teaching important life skills to their children. When the family says “Thank you, Dad”, they are thanking you for your true legacy - the health and well-being of your children, our future generation.

LOVELY GREETINGS FROM TRINITY BEACH
Introducing Christiane Wagner. Christiane became a Registered Nurse in 1984. Since then, Christiane has been continuously participating in training to upgrade her capacity to provide holistic care, advice and support to her clients. Her commitment to achieving exceptional outcomes for clients is evidenced through her establishment and operation of two highly successful businesses for over 20 years. Having emigrated from Germany in 2011, Christiane has now established a new business called Body and Skin Care, Cairns Beaches. By focusing on the whole individual, Christiane is able to tailor treatments to address diverse problems and emotions and support clients to find a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Christiane draws on her extensive, diverse experience to assess client conditions and then applies her deep knowledge of multiple disciplines to provide the treatments which will achieve the best results. With a holistic vision, Christiane applies traditional massage therapies as well as Balneo therapies (the treatment of conditions through a combination of bathing and massage), and lymphatic drainage in a multipronged approach to tackling her clients’ health and wellness issues. After a family member needed her care, who was born without a bladder and the ureter where planted into the gut (1991), she experienced first hand the importance of the pH & gut. She developed a comprehensive pH & gut program and offers to combine all her treatments with it, which makes it possible to get much better improvements. Christiane is also an accomplished rehabilitation therapist. With experience working in a large rehabilitation hospital in German prior to her departure to Australia, Christiane learned alot about back, hip, knee, feet and shoulder injuries and the types of therapies and exercises that yielded the best results. During her own recovery after an accident where she broke her 7th vertebrae she realized that using exercises she realised that using exercises that build up muscles and improve the function of the fascia, is a much better way of healing injuries for both the short and long term.

Christiane therefore teaches clients the most appropriate exercises to treat their injuries and sets strict programs so that the injury receives the exact number of repetitions so as to not over or underwork the joint in question. Body and Skin Care, Cairns Beaches is the actualisation of Christiane’s dream to provide the Cairns community with a health and wellbeing practice that cares for the in and the out. Established in 2015 and drawing on Christiane’s three decades of experience, Body and Skin Care, Cairns Beaches offers: • Massage therapy • Balneo therapy • Manual lymphatic drainage • Rehabilitation training • Dr Hauschka skin & beauty therapy • Comprehensive pH & gut program • Educational workshops This means that Christiane is able to: • assist in the healing of injured soft tissues such as muscles, tendons and ligaments through the use of a wide range of massage techniques • use of massage to promote relaxation, improve circulation and relieve muscle tension • use of lymphatic drainage to encourage the natural drainage of the lymph nodes so that waste products can be carried away from the tissues back toward the heart • assist to get back to a balanced pH and gut, which is basics of health of all organs, including muscles tissue, joints, & skin • apply rehabilitation strategies to assist clients to resolve injuries in the shortest time possible • teach clients techniques to ensure their rehabilitation is conducted in the most appropriate manner • provide skin care through the use of Dr Hauschka’s certified organic products which support the physical cycle of the skin • teach clients how to achieve a balanced, healthy, independent skin Christiane believes to be educated in health is nowadays more important then ever. Therefore she runs different educational classes, which can be booked one to one or in small classes at your place or in the clinic as well.

World renowned award winning singer and recording artist Kamahl improves his hearing during Hearing Awareness Week at AUDiOHEALTH!
aids are medical devices it may be possible to claim a tax rebate. We also make better hearing possible by offering interest- free term repayment plans.”
AUDiOHEALTH are making better hearing affordable and accessible for everyone!
For eligible Pensioners and Veterans there is assistance available. The government has a Commonwealth Hearing Services program run by the Office of Hearing Services which enables eligible Pensioners and Veterans to obtain fully subsidized hearing devices and rehabilitation and there is the option of topping up to better technology by making a personal contribution or using Private Health Insurance as a no gap topup. AUDiOHEALTH are an accredited Provider with this department and having immediate access to the government portal will be able to assist with any inquires, services or assistance required.
What better time to take action and improve your hearing than during Hearing Awareness Week which is exactly what Kamahl did. Kamahl recognized that his hearing was precious and fragile and in need of the best care he visited AUDiOHEALTH where he began his better hearing journey by having his hearing needs and hearing levels assessed by Aaron Magee, director of the third generation family Practice. Kamahl encourages anyone who suspects they have a hearing loss to take the first step and have a hearing check. Aaron makes the process easy by taking the time to understand the challenges you are facing and is able to offer a wide choice of solutions.

Kamahl was fitted with the latest hearing aid technology and was instantly impressed with the ‘clear sound’. The hearing aids are not only clear but are discreet and have the latest operating system utilizing a quad-core microprocessor enhancing speech, reducing background noise and reproducing music clearly. Consequently Kamahl is now able to fully appreciate the world of music that he loves again. Worldwide it is estimated over 360 million people suffer from disabling hearing loss and according to a study by Access Economics hearing loss costs the Australian economy 11.5 billion dollars annually. In addition, people with hearing impairment can earn significantly less than their counterparts with normal hearing. This is only the tip of the iceberg, it does not take into consideration the medical, social, personal, family or community impact. “At AUDiOHEALTH our clients have unlimited choice and access to any product available on the Australian market, explains Aaron. We keep our prices very affordable, often several thousand dollars less a set compared to our competitors. Private health funds offer rebates and as hearing
More education and awareness on what is available is essential as people often come to us with devices with thick old fashioned tubing and large cumbersome ear moulds. Often these have not had a professional clean or in-house service for years and are working most inefficiently if at all. Many people are unaware that they can access new products that are smaller more discreet options with better technology optimizing their hearing often at minimal expense”. Kamahl urges anyone suffering from hearing loss to take action now and call AUDiOHEALTH on 4041 7860 for an obligation free consultation. There’s nothing to lose and a whole new world of sound to experience.

PILATES AND THE GAIT CYCLE JA NIN E N OO PE TC H
Did you realise that the way you walk affects everything from your feet, knees, pelvis, spine and more? We don’t really think a lot about the complexity of our feet while walking and running and yet it is one of the most basic human movements and we continually go about our daily business expecting our feet just to keep us moving day in and day out. Take a moment, get off your chair and go for a little walk, take note of what your feet are actually doing from one step to the next. Try to walk as naturally as possible. You will most likely find that one or both feet will roll in (Pronate) or roll out (Supinate). You may find that your arches are low or non existent. You may even notice a difference between the two sides of your body, one hip may even hike. The complex detail of the gait cycle is due in part to the huge amount of joints that are involved. The hip and knee joint have a huge role in the gait cycle along with the foot, but in saying this the whole body is involved. The feet are the foundation of the body and if there is misalignment in the feet it can result in postural deviations and compensations all the way up the body. The Subtaler Joint controls the inward and outward motion of the foot. You can observe the foot from behind and take a look at the Archillies Tendon. The Tendon should be perpendicular from the ground, if it is not you can help to correct the rolling in or out of the foot with a good Pilates Instructor. You will find there is a big focus on Footwork on

the Pilates Reformer, Tower or Wunda Chair within every class you take. An experienced Pilates Instructor will pay close attention to your position of your feet and adjust you the entire footwork series. Joseph Pilates creator of Pilates (formerly known as Contrology) was a very clever man and was way ahead of his time. A high percentage of us suffer from foot, knee, hip and back issues. Did you ever think that the way we walk may have something to do with those issues? Pilates is an amazing programme for realigning from the feet up particularly with the footwork and hip work we do on the Pilates Equipment. Within 10 session you will notice a difference in your feet, legs, hips, and upper body. If you have heard of Pilates but have no idea of what it is! Now is the time to give us a call, book yourself in for your 3 One on One Sessions and find out why Pilates will change not just the alignment of your feet but a whole myriad of other things and for a lot of people it can be the best hour of the week they spend. You will always walk out of the Pilates session feel uplifted and amazing. We would love to see you in our beautiful studio in Smithfield very soon. Here is to realigning those feet!
CAIRNS SKIN SPECIALISTS THE SKIN CARE CENTRE OF CAIRNS
Dr Des Fernandes, world leading Plastic Surgeon and scientific director of Environ Skincare, says: “Ageing skin is a direct result of sun-induced vitamin A deficiency. Correct the deficiency and you’ll have more radiant, healthy skin.” Everything that defines healthy, beautiful skin is a direct result of vitamin A. It is the only known molecule that keeps the skin healthy and helps to provide anti-ageing benefits. A vitamin A deficiency could lead to skin abnormalities such as pigmentation irregularities, sun damage, ageing, and skin cancer. The most common skin care problem in both men and women is sun-damage and the long-term effects of sun exposure are sinister. Vitamin A is the cornerstone ingredient in the Environ Skincare range, combined with other essential vitamins C, E and nutrients, like antioxidants and peptides. Unique to the Environ Skincare range is the highly effective Vitamin STEP-UP SYSTEM™ helping skin to become gradually more comfortable with increasing doses of vitamin A and other ingredients thereby reducing the likelihood of a skin reaction. The Skin Care Centre of Cairns is one of the leading Environ Skincare clinics in Australia and is proud to offer the complete Environ Skincare range to their clients in conjunction with the signature Environ® Active Vitamin Infusion Facial Treatment.

Congratulations! You’ve made the decision to build a new home and now it’s time to choose your builder. Which one is right for you and your home building project? There are many home builders available to choose from in our area and it’s a big decision to make but ultimately it comes down to looking for someone you feel comfortable with and trust with this big lifestyle investment. You should consider a builder with the appropriate level of experience for the type of home you want to build. Whether you are building your first home, a custom designed home, an investment property, upgrading to a long term family home, or renovating your home the person you are dealing with should have that level of experience and have the backing of a company that can provide it directly to you. If you have a sloping block of land then choose a builder that is experienced in this type of construction and has a track record of knowing the different construction methods and other associated building costs involved. Make sure they discuss options and other costs like site drainage, council requirements, retaining walls, landscaping, requirements for your swimming pool now or in the future, cyclonic building requirements
and how any of these will impact on your construction and budget. A knowledgeable and experienced builder will be able to work within your budget to give you numerous options for your new home in designs and inclusions. They can guide you to the most suitable products and should be able to give you advice on best value for money for your personal choices. If you want to use specialist products and finishes check that you can and are not restricted to that builder’s fixtures or fittings. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t understand. Ask who you will be dealing with after your building contract is signed as some companies will pass you onto another consultant during the actual building process. Above all make sure that you understand and are comfortable with all of the stages of your new home build and have confidence in your builder to provide the home that you will be happy with for many years to come. Here at Affinity Designer Homes and Value Homes we work with you from start to finish and final handover of your new home. So if you are looking to build call me to discuss your options and experience the excitement of planning your new home with our professional team.
