Changes in legislation seek to address rail challenges Katie Davis News Reporter

The Fair Rail for Grain Farmers Act was introduced in Parliament to address grain transport and rail capacity issues in western Canada, noted a Governement of Canada press release on Wednesday, March 26. Speaking to Parliament in Ottawa, Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Transportation Minister Lisa Raitt said that the amendments to the Canada Transportation Act and Grain Act would increase transparency within the supply chain, encourage stronger contracts between shippers and producers and prioritize grain handling and shipping efficiency. The press release also highlighted steps to address medium and longer-term consequences of extreme cold weather and higher crop yields, with efforts to ensure more timely data and monitoring of grain movements by railway companies. Of the legislation, Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Verlyn Olson said he was pleased such concerns were being addressed. The release provided some statistics on the booming yield of the past year’s crop, which came in at 76 billion tonnes, or 50 per cent higher yield than average. It was noted that this was a significant strain on the transportation system, which in recent months has been a major cause for concern for farmers. “The legislation incorporates several improvements recommended by Alberta, including an extension of interswitching distances to allow shippers greater access to service from more than one rail company, provisions to clearly define supply chain service requirements, increased reporting of commodity movements and enhanced federal authority to more quickly address inadequate service during

extraordinary circumstances,” Olson said.

The other side In response to the new legislation, the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association (WCWGA) distributed a press release on March 27 outlining that while the legislation does have some positive elements, it does not address the nucleus of the grain shipping capacity issue. “These measures do not adequately tackle the backlog in grain shipments,” said Levi Wood, President of the Wheat Growers, in the release. “They also do not position our industry to meet the longterm needs of prairie farmers or our customers.” One of the central complaints outlined by the Wheat Growers press release was the fixed minimum grain shipping requirement at one million tonnes per week, or 11,000 railcars, effective from April 7 to August 3, 2014. The Wheat Growers noted that this would entail grain carryout on prairie farms exceeding 20 million tonnes in advance of the next harvest, resulting in the continued presence of severe price discounts, or wide basis levels. “Grain prices to farmers will remain artificially depressed until the backlog is cleared up and the elevator system has the capacity available to offer competitive bids for our grain,” said Wood. The Wheat Growers had recommended a minimum shipment of 1.2 million tonnes, or 13,000 railcars. Other recommendations not included in the legislation were incentive-based revenue cap, expanded shipping capacity long-term and steps that would see shortlines and other operators given the ability to add capacity to the shipping network if Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific (CP) rail lines are unwilling or unable to meet market demand.

Coronation council receives audit report Katie Davis News Reporter

Council received a verbal report of their 2013 financial audit by Curtis Gabinet of Endeavor Chartered Accountants at their regular meeting on Monday, March 31. In summary, Gabinet noted that there were no glaring errors to be found during the audit. “Compared to prior years and budget, everything is spot on with very little variance,” Gabinet said. “It’s nice to see but not a whole lot to talk about.”

Waste management agreement

Council voted to enter into an agreement with Can Pak Environmental for waste management services, beginning April 1, 2014. CAO Sandra Kulyk noted that the agreement was straightforward and simple: a three year term was outlined,

with option to extend for an additional one or two years if desired. It was noted a fuel surcharge would be applied if the cost of diesel was in excess of $1.40 per litre for more than 30 consecutive days.

Council motioned to establish three new handicap parking spots on Victoria Avenue, Windsor Avenue and Royal Street near the Coronation Provincial Building. The discussion of this was prompted by correspondence received from Alberta Health Services concerning a request for a handicap spot in front of the Provincial Building. It was noted that the town lacked designated handicap stalls on either Royal Street or Victoria Avenue and that the corners of some intersections were the only access points for wheelchairs. An unconventionally perfect final act The final show of the Coronation Royal Performing Arts series was held on Friday, March 28 with comedian Robert Post entertaining a sizeable crowd at the Coronation Community Centre. With the new lineup of the 2014 - 2015 shows distributed amongst the tables and a season of highly engaging performances behind him, Post’s production was to signify an end to one era of entertainment and the beginnings of another. Post’s humble entrance on stage, wholly alone and dressed in modest casual attire, was suggestive that his introduction was not to his performance, but an introduction of himself and his unique mind. He began chatting with the audience about his show after the lead-up performance by Yellow Bird, a student band from Consort and Coronation; casually noting that it was difficult to describe what he does “so good luck.” With that foreboding warning, Post launched into a series of strange, surreal movements and gestures, his odd facial expressions emulated a man made of rubber as he played out an exaggerated football tossing scene, reversed it and played it again in perfect slow motion. Without warning, Post launched into another casually sarcastic monologue about the beauty of Canadian spring: it was this unpredictable navigation of extremes that was to colour his performance throughout the night. His first real embodied act was a pantomime of an unlucky burglar, who’s every step seemed to get him into ever-evolving difficulties. In a background of pure silence, Post’s gestural manner of acting and voice-play of irritated cats, snoring homeowners and crying children stood out like vibrant sparks, perfectly describing a looter who’s ambitions were eventually thwarted by a series of frustrating mishaps.

Dancing with space and time

Next, Post introduced the audience silently to a dance partner - a red unitard underwear, which he manipulated and tossed about in an unreal waltz. His fluid manipulation of the piece of cloth to appear as though it was an active dance partner in the production, including a frisky grabbing of Post’s posterior, was impressive in both skill and hilarity. Post’s banter with the audience continually infused a sassy take on Coronation life that was debilitatingly honest and tongue-in-cheek. He introduced his piece on the speed of life by noting that it paled in comparison to the speed of life in Coronation, which he described as “like a blur.” With his background noise provided by the sound system, Post played the part of an over-stressed businessman attempting to juggle family and work life in a frenzy of speed and anxious encounters. From buzzing coworkers to traffic turmoil, Post painted a picture of modern urban life for the rat race crowd. Only upon exiting the scene temporarily via a wormhole in time did Post find himself suddenly on a beach sipping a cool beverage: a paradise crafted in Hawiian music and the sounds of waves and seagulls. The lights dimmed and raised to the tune of his madness, giving the production itself a multidimensional feel. After, Post mused that perhaps local residents might see parallels of the piece in their daily affairs. “I’m sure you saw a lot of Coronation in that piece,” he joked seriously. “The city, the taxis... a traffic jam is two cars facing each other in a duel.” One resident noted via shout that it would be two “trucks,” which Post swiftly took up and modified his joke accordingly.

Surreal adventures

Posts performances kept coming with a ferocity and uniqueness that was continually captivating and entertaining. From a father teaching his son in vain how to work a manual “truck” to a scene where Post played the part of a pilot, plane and

mountain, his works boggled the mind with their ingenuity and energy. In a theatrical murder mystery behind a black rectangle, Post played a dowdy British detective, French mistress, affluent German and dead man (to name but a few characters). He swiftly and seamlessly switched between characters, leading the audience through the twists and turns of a sordid production of murder, lust and intrigue. Post’s ability to mediate between personalities was nothing short of remarkable - he became each character completely, right down to the most subtle differences in facial expressiveness. In his final act, Post played Pasquale, a perfectly quintessential television chef with a passion for food and an equally

vibrant excitement for tossing pots and pans about in a exaggerated fashion. From a battle of wits with a frisky fish to a litany of cheesy phrases; a Soviet melodrama making Russian delicacies to an appearance by Darth Vadar; Post flashed all over the character map in a mania. His variety and charm succeeded in making the entire evening speed by with constant energy and the ending seemed to come too soon. As a performance artist and entertainer, Post demonstrated that the unconventional and strange make for remarkably entertaining fare. As the final production for the Coronation Royal Performing Arts, Post was an unconventionally perfect final act.

Coronation Community Centre discusses successes Katie Davis News Reporter

was in good stead for the new year.

The Coronation Community Centre Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on Thursday, March 27 to discuss the upcoming season of shows and provide general information regarding the centre. The AGM took place a day before the final Coronation Royal Performing Arts performance with Robert Post. The 2014 - 2015 pending performance season was introduced via a distributed flyer. Shows included Melody A. Johnson’s “Miss Caledonia,” a theatrical comedy; The Inclines, a Patsy Cline Tribute Band; Bridget Ryan’s “Here’s to the ladies who laugh,” a musical theatre production; Jimmy Rankin, celtic/pop and former member of the Rankin Family and Dave Gunning, a folk/country production. Flyers this year included websites to direct potential patrons to view acts online prior to attending concerts. Successes outlined for the 2013 year included a grant obtained for sound equipment, which made a significant improvement in the sound quality of the shows. A BFI grant of $3000 was also received for a new wheel-chair access ramp. The Committee mentioned they had applied for a grant to re-do the carpeting, yet has not heard back on the matter. It was discussed that the 2013 - 2014 season was a success, with the calendar seeing good performance attendance and the addition of meals adding to the allure of the acts. Also referenced was the availability of 10 ad spaces for the upcoming calendar; an overview of the July casino and the funds received from the volunteer-led initiative and a general agreement that financially the Community Centre

Alberta Cultural grants funding to anti-oil institution by Derek Fildebrandt, Alberta Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) released more documents on Wednesday, March 26, showing the Government of Alberta is funnelling large sums of money to the Pembina Institute, an anti-oil, antipipeline activist group. Documents obtained by the CTF through Freedom of Information (FOIP) requests show that the Department of Energy gave the Pembina Institute $224,971 over the last three years for providing advice, organizing a forum and sitting on a Carbon Capture and Storage Program committee. The department’s funding averages $74,990 a year. Revelations of the funding from the Department of Energy come just one day after the CTF released documents showing that the Department of Culture

provided the Pembina Institute with $88,381 over the last five years. “This is now two departments in the Government of Alberta that we have found shovelling money to anti-pipeline political activists,” said CTF Alberta Director Derek Fildebrandt. “It’s absolutely ludicrous for the government to be out fighting tooth and nail for the Keystone XL and Northern Gateway pipeline and than to be giving questionable contracts and grants to the very people who are opposing these pipelines.” “Paying the CTF or the Fraser Institute to sit on a taxation policy committee would be equally as ridiculous because it’s just wrong to force taxpayers to subsidize political organizations with which they may not agree.” Fildebrandt concluded, “For what it’s worth, our advice to government is free.”

Truth and Reconciliation Commission Dear Editor, I would be interested to know how many of your readers were aware of the Indian Residential Schools here in Canada?? These schools spanned from the 1870’s until 1996 when the last one was finally closed. About 150,000 First Nations children attended approximately 130 schools throughout Canada. These schools were government funded and a majority of them were church operated. The principal reason for these schools were to culturally and spiritually transform the aboriginal people. Bonds were broken between parent and child and families were literally ripped apart. A majority of the children lost their identity, their hair was cut, they were made to wear a uniform, their aboriginal names were replaced with a EuroCanadian one and a number. For a majority of them they were punished for speaking their native language. Many children were strapped, humiliated, beaten, locked in cellars and sexually abused!!! The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada was formed in 2008. This panel held seven national events throughout Canada. The seventh and final event was held in Edmonton this past week. Essential and greatly appreciated Cont’d from Pg 4 Like the Prime Minister, I agree that this day should be used to recognize the sacrifices that have been made - not only by our men and women in uniform but by their families as well, who have sacrificed so much for such long periods of time. I encourage all Canadians to also use this day as an opportunity to give back to your community and to reflect on the values that make Canada the best country in the world in which to live: peace, security, human rights, democracy and the rule of law. The work that our Forces members do on our behalf every day is essential and

greatly appreciated. With competence, pride and commitment, they uphold and protect our values. Please know that my colleagues and I will continue to work hard for veterans and soldiers - even

though whatever I or our government does can never be enough - and that we will always try to find ways to do more. This is the least that we owe to our brave men and women in uniform.

His love never wavered Richard A. “Dick” Wylie Richard A. “Dick” Wylie of Castor, Alberta was born in Edmonton on March 6, 1941 to Norman and Muriel Wylie, a younger brother to Norman Jr. The boys grew up in the Strathearn area of Edmonton. Dick invited Jesus into his heart when he was around eight years old and his faith grew stronger over the years until it became a Wylie part of all he was. In 1960 he began working for the provincial government where he remained for 42 years. He began his career in the department of Public Works moving on to the office of the Public Trustee where he became a Senior Trust Officer. Dick was married to his first wife for 19 years and they were blessed with three wonderful daughters. Following his divorce he met Catherine in 1983 at church in Edmonton. They were married in 1985 and added three more wonderful daughters to their union. Six daughters and Dick couldn’t have been happier. Dick was an active volunteer in many areas but was particularly honoured to sit on the board of the Evangelical Tract Society, having been supportive of their mission for many years. Dick retired in 2002 and the Wylies moved to Brownfield where they discovered the joys of rural life and developed many friendships. Not one to sit around, Dick continued working, first for Scheff Farms, then Thieleman’s Greenhouse and finally Wal-Mart in Stettler, a job he thoroughly loved! During his time of illness, his faith, his love for his wife and family and friends never wavered. He went to be with the Lord on March 16, 2014 with his loving family by his side. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on March 29, 2014 at the Evangelical Missionary Church, Castor, Alberta with Pastor Grant Sikstrom officiating.

by Lyndsey Smith, Editor of RealAgriculture.com From the very simple to the GPSreference, cloud-shared and multi-user type, the number of made-for-agriculture online applications (apps) grows each month. If you have a current smartphone or tablet, you are set to begin incorporating these handy time savers and data-management tools into your farm. If you are somewhat overwhelmed by the technology, fear not. Some apps are really just task-specific calculators like those from Beyond Agronomy, which include a tank mix guide and a seeding rate calculator. Others are simply in-hand, on-the-go resources, like the International Plant Nutrition Institute nutrient removal app. As farmers adopt the use of the technology, apps and app developers are quickly heeding the call for what farmers need. Recently, six new made-in-westernCanada apps rolled out that cover everything from estimating combine losses, to choosing a buffer zone while spraying, to narrowing down nozzle selection. If you are looking to get more interactive or fully integrate apps into data management on your farm, there is more than a few ways to do so. Field scouting apps like FieldNotes and ScoutDoc allow you to GPS-reference what you are seeing or measuring in a field. Farm At Hand is a free app that allows you, and up to five other users to track bin storage, field activities, and contract commitments from your phone or your desktop. Then there is information management. Just about every major agriculture media company has its own app. However, if you are looking for an app that doubles as a price discovery and

Is it time to “fix” your farm mortgage rate? Agri-News A question that always comes up during mortgage loan term negotiations is whether to lock into a fixed long-term mortgage rate or stay in a variable rate. “Since 1975, the majority of the time, the variable interest rate has been the better option and has saved producers money,” says Rick Dehod, farm financial specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “We are seeing that the US economy is slowly coming back, and poised to accelerate. Fiveyear Government of Canada and US Treasury bond yields were at a 2.5 year highs early in January 2014, on an improving global outlook. As bond yields rise, the cost of funds for lenders also rise, putting pressure on business borrowing costs including long-term mortgage rates. “Economists do not see much change in the Bank of Canada rate until the third quarter of 2015, and then they predict rates will slowly climb. It may take some time for rates to climb, but we may not see these low interest rates again for some time. Bank prime rates have not exceeded 3.0 per cent since January 22, 2009, and posted 5-year mortgage rates have not exceeded 6.0 per cent in this same period. Interest rates have not been a barrier to financing.” Alberta Farmers have a strong balance sheet. In 2011, an average Alberta farm had assets of $2,438,491 with total liabilities of $322,406, for a net worth of $2,116,085 or 86.7 per cent. But this varies with the age of the farm manager and where they are the farm’s business cycle. “We have seen farm debt outstanding in Alberta grow from $13,147,232 in 2008 to $15,890,762 in 2012,” notes Dehod. “Many beginning farmers have incurred debt to finance entrance into the business

of farming or expansion. Their debt loads are much larger than the average Alberta farmer and are subject to some financial risk should interest rates rise.” The majority of farm managers have chosen the variable rate term on their mortgages or one year fixed in the past. Going forward, as mortgages are reviewed on their renewal date, a five-year fixed term should be part of the discussion. Bank economists are suggesting, from their interest rate outlook, there is an advantage to choosing a fixed rate. Though peace of mind comes at a price as 5-year fixed mortgages are presently posted at 2.0 per cent higher than prime. Some farm managers have been able to negotiate a better long-term rate. If interest rates climb in the next couple of years, this difference will quickly erode. Changes in Canada’s and world economies will drive variable rates higher. A fixed rate will give the borrower certainty in their interest costs, and that certainly is worth something to those who have a higher debt load. A small premium on fixed rate mortgages could represent inexpensive protection to an interest rate spike into the future. Determining how soon to act when rates do start to rise, will be based on several factors. Knowing your interest costs and your farms sensitivity to an interest rate increase is a good start. With recent crop margins tightening, it’s important to figure out in advance whether the farm’s loan repayment capacity handle a 2, 4, or 6 per cent increase in interest rates. It’s prudent to check your debt servicing requirements considering possible changes. Debt servicing analysis is broken down into two main sections – debt servicing capacity (DSC), and debt servicing requirements (DSR). These are calculated as

50 + Yearlings Performance & Calving Ease

follows: • DSC = Accrued Net Farm Income + depreciation expense + interest expense + off-farm income – family withdrawals – farm Income Tax paid • DSR = Total Accrued Interest Expense + total term loan principal payments (for a fiscal year) “The difference between DSC and DSR must be positive,” says Dehod. “Once you’ve done the calculations using current numbers, see if the farm can withstand an interest rate increase of 2 per cent. Add 2 per cent to your average interest rate on all of the farm’s debt to calculate the total accrued interest expense. Then check to see if the difference between your DSC and DSR is still positive, or if the increase in interest rate significantly changes your repayment risk.” Lenders often use a Debt Servicing Ratio. This is calculated as Debt Servicing Ratio = DSC / DSR. Industry benchmarks for this ratio vary from one financial institution to another, but generally, the following benchmarks apply: • greater that 1.5 is low risk • to 1.5 is medium risk • less than 1.1 represents high risk “Remember, interest rates are part of your interest expense calculation, and your interest rate does not show up on your Income and Expense statement,” says Dehod. “The other part of the calculation of interest expense is what you owe. If in the short run, you have an aggressive principal repayment plan to reduce your farm’s total debt, then an increase in interest rate may not worry you. But if you don’t, fixing your interest rate may be a good option.” Currently, mortgage funds are readily available to agriculture producers as banks compete for market share and retention of good customers. It is a good time,

for those who have not got the financial flexibility to endure a large interest rate hike (typically beginning farmers and those who have chosen to significantly grow) to look at a fixed rate and negotiate the best possible 5-year fixed rate. Any potential extra cost for peace of mind now appears a short-term price for long-term viability. Fixing your interest rate could be the insurance you require to manage your financial risk. Each producer and farm business manager has a different risk appetite and risk mitigating strategy, the choice remains an individual one.” For further information, check out the Farm Manager – Your Business resource.

Crop Protection 2014 Update

Protection publication. This continues the recent trend where the majority of new products consist of (1) active ingredients that are already available through previously registered products or (2) new mixes of existing products. “It is important to recognize this trend when selecting pesticides,” notes Cutts. “Producers should continue to purchase pesticide products based on chemical group and active ingredient. Purchasing pesticides products based on newly registered product names could lead to repeated use of a chemical group and increase the risk of developing pesticide resistance.” Copies of the Crop Protection book can be ordered through the Publications Office, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. One of the most widely requested publications available through Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development is the Crop Protection book, also known as the “Blue Book.” This publication is updated annually and provides the most recent information on registered pesticide products. Updates for the pesticide products included in the 2014 Crop Protection book have been recently completed. “An important component of the annual update is the addition of newly registered products,” says Mark Cutts, crop specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “For the 2014 Blue Book there were several new pesticide entries added. New products were added to the four pesticide sections (herbicides, insecticides, seed treatments and foliar fungicides) in the publication. The newly registered foliar fungicides cover a wide range of crops and diseases. For the new seed treatments entries, active ingredients have been added to previously registered seed treatments to provide additional disease control. There has also been the addition of new seed treatment products that are registered for (1) early season wireworm protection in cereals and (2) cutworm control in oilseed crops. The new herbicide entries included products registered for use as pre-seed, in-crop, chemical fallow and post-harvest.” A limited number of new active ingredients were added to the 2014 Crop

ECA REVIEW

An engaging tale CORONATION/STETTLER, AB.

Katie Davis News Reporter No doubt many were wondering what lay behind the minds of many a character in Michael and Susan Parker’s What is Susan’s Secret, a Stage Hanna production viewed in Hanna on Saturday, March 29. Centering around the quaint Cider Mill Inn - ‘C’ askew - the play revolved around the unique elderly duo of Susan and Michael Edwards (Corinne Taylor and Finlay Currie), who couldn’t keep each other’s names straight but had enough cunning to fool many a house-guest into spearheading their inventive renovation schemes. Though the couple appeared at first glance to be somewhat senile or increasingly imaginative, they swiftly managed to convince the audience they had smarts enough to swindle plumbers, carpenters and electricians into renovating their aging lodge via the cunning use of fine print on their check-in forms. Through advertising a whopping 90 per cent off and a free dinner for each visiting tradesman, the two accumulated a growing list of begrudging help, each more surprised and confused than the last. Through three acts, the duo interacted with a wealth of interesting characters - from an undercover hotel critic engaging in a weekend affair to a leatherbound priest straight out of Hell’s Angels. The cast of characters never ceased to be interesting and add a unique flavour to the pace of the tale.

Gregson played a welcome combination of well-meaning, dominant wife and good-natured, easygoing husband caught up in an unintended whirlwind. The second couple of Bobby and Jenny, newlyweds in the throes of emotional upheaval, were played to a ‘T’ by Bryce Limpert and Kirby Stevenson. As Bobby, a quiet, gentle cowboy with an “aw, shucks” demeanour, Limpert appeared both caring and laidback when it came to his oversensitive new wife Jenny. Stevenson played a stereotypical spoiled bride, deeply troubled by her new husband’s 3 a.m. ‘demands’ that were strikingly trivial and youthfully naive. As Jeffrey and Penny, Shane Stevenson and Tammy David played the quintessential ‘odd couple.’ David was a seductive, cynical woman bored to death and taking solace in wine, who became more animated as time - and wine flowed onward. Stevenson played an increasingly out of touch, wideeyed carpenter whom his wife described as having the intellectual capacity of a tuna sandwich. With a New York-esque accent, scrunched face and odd gait, Stevenson was uproarious as he rambled about counting leaves and had a knack for shouting “hallow!” in greetings at the most inconvenient times. Bill, the second character of Gregson, was a shrewd high society journalist secretly penning reviews for Country Inns of America. With swagger and a hint of masculine potency, he was a

clever match for Julie (Tina Mohl), an oversexed vixen who’s secret liaison with Bill provided the perfect fodder for Susan’s blackmail upon discovering an unfavourable review is afoot. Kelly and Paul, played by Candice Gordon and Bryce Limpert, were a charming young couple attempting to escape the prying eyes of their elders by having a secret rendezvous that turned terribly awry in a manner that involved cross-dressing and much time spent ‘in the closet.’ As Bertha, Gwen Snell played a former army sergeant that nobody would mess with, much less her brother Michael. Her gruff demeanor was complimented well by her own tendency to forget things in a subtle way, demonstrating that wayward brains ran in the family. In perhaps what was one of the most unique characters of the play, Shane Stevenson held his second role as Murray, a Reverend without a cause. Dressed in leather motorcycle gear with the southern drawl of a prime-time preacher, Stevenson swaggered and preached his hippy-brand of ethics to all, including his observation that “if Jesus rode into Jerusalem, it’d be on a hog, not a donkey!” Catching up on the latest ‘Brangelina’ gossip and gesturing the sign of the cross after an obviously significant washroom break, his character was an idiosyncratic and entertaining compliment to the final act of the unique play.

The key players

As Michael and Susan Edwards, Currie and Taylor had a charming air of innocence and obliviousness, permeated frequently by displays of bold, clever deception. As Michael, Currie played a man of many faces, embodied characters of folklore and history as swiftly as he could fall asleep in his rocking chair. As Susan, Taylor played a matronly old gal strongly invested in her business, deeply in love with her husband and profoundly cunning. She was typically in charge of the duties of the Inn, which included lecturing her forgetful husband when he was led astray by his mind and pulling shrewd tactics on her patrons with the cool intensity of a Wall Street lawyer. Jean and Larry, played by Cheryl Stevenson and James Gregson, were the first unlucky tradesmen couple to fall upon the Inn’s recipe for trickery. As a duo, Stevenson and

As Julie and Bill (Tina Mohl and James Gregson) silently planned their evening together, Jeffery (Shane Stevenson) stood alone and awkward, rambling on about nothing important, during the Stage Hanna production of What Is Susan’s Secret, at the Hanna Community Centre on March 29, 2014. JOHNSON CONNOR www.johnsonconnor.com AGENCIES RATE Yourself – It’s Quick It’s Easy AGENCIES Call or Click – We work for you! Ed Rye was sold on Camrose Chrysler long before he began working as a sales representative for the company. In 2003 he bought a car from Mike Rodin, who is now the dealer principal. It was a 300M and the best car he’s ever owned. “Never missed a beat,” says Ed. “and still going strong.” After a life of working in the oil patch and driving trucks, Ed decided to take it a little easier. All those jangled miles on the road were taking a toll on his lower back. However, life in his recliner was tougher on him than bouncing around on a long haul, so he picked up the phone and called Mike, wondering if they had any opportunities. A new door opened. “Here I am,” says Ed with a big friendly smile. “It’s a blessing.” He absolutely enjoys the work, meeting people and staying vital. If you’re looking for a new vehicle, give Ed a call. You’ll be impressed by how hard he’ll work for you.

many visitors with comfort and dignity and also allowed her family to be there continuously to comfort her. We would especially like to thank the extraordinary efforts of Dr. Mdawe and the nursing staff of the Hanna Hospital for accommodating our every need in a comforting and considerate manner. The support we have received will give us strength as we attempt to move forward in the manner that Kathy would want us to. EXPRESSION of Thanks The family of the late Kathy Czar would like to express their gratitude for the thoughtful acts of Kathy’s care givers, friends and relatives during her extended time in the Palliative suite of the Hanna Hospital prior to her passing on February 15th, 2014, and in the many cards of condolence we have since received. We found the expressions of sympathy heartwarming, as many have included a line or two explaining what Kathy meant to them. We are also grateful for the numerous other kindnesses that were directed at Kathy and the rest of the family, such as food being brought both to the hospital and to the ranch, bouquets of flowers sent to her room and later to her memorial service, the many visitors who shared their memories, and the many generous donors who gave to the Palliative suite of the Hanna Hospital in Kathy’s memory. The furnishings and space within this suite allowed Kathy to enjoy her
