Unknown person(s) attempted to gain access to a Ford Pickup truck in the 4600 block of 56 Ave in Provost during the night of April 2 through April 3. The unknown suspect(s) were not successful in entering the vehicle, however damage was caused to the locking mechanism of the vehicle in the process.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have information regarding these occurrences to contact the RCMP.

Hit and Run

A dark coloured dodge pickup hit a chain link fence at the corner of 53 Avenue and 45 Street in Provost on April 1 at approximately 1:30 am. The fence has extensive damage requiring replacement. There should be extensive damage to the front end of the pickup truck.

According to a RCMP press release there was a significant amount of damage to the vehicle along with some paint transfer. Damages are estimated at $3000.

Motor vehicle collision

Coronation RCMP, Castor Fire, and Castor EMS responded to a single vehicle rollover collision on highway 12 near Castor on Wednesday, April 1 at 4:30 pm.

The passenger of the vehicle received medical treatment on scene and was released, while the driver of the vehicle received

treatment at Coronation Hospital for minor injuries and was later released.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the collision and the investigation is ongoing.

Brad Wiebe, CEO of Palliser Regional Municipal Services came to the council meeting on March 30, to present the proposed revisions to the Town of Coronation Land Use Bylaw and Municipal Development Plan (MDP).

In the MDP package provided it states that “the purpose of the MDP is to establish a statutory statement of goals and objectives for land use and development in the Town of Coronation and to outline strategies for achieving them.”

The MDP is a comprehensive framework for Council, businesses, developers and the public to make future oriented decisions and to aid in making more detailed plans and policies, for example; future development, the coordination of land use and the protection of agricultural operations.

It provides the direction for future growth, policies to affect that growth and the most appropriate location for growth to occur for the various land uses.

Weibe added that it can always be amended, should the need arise, according to the Municipal Government Act. The document also highlighted that the MDP “shall not relieve a person from compliance with the Land Use Bylaw nor any other document established by the Municipal Government Act.”

Consort RCMP and Consort Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the Village of Consort at approximately 4 p.m. on April 1.

Upon arrival the house was fully engulfed in flames. There were no injuries related to this incident, and the home was completely destroyed. This fire is not thought to be suspicious. The investigation is ongoing at this time according to a RCMP report.

The Hanna Museum was taken over by ghosts on March 29 when the All Aboard Project introduced their second showcase, The Hanna Ghost Walk.

The first showcase was the Hanna/ Parker Wedding where paying guests don’t just watch the play about the Hanna/ Parker wedding, they actually become part of it, interacting with the characters in the wedding, thus becoming part of the show.

Trish Sewall of the Cactus Corridor explained in a telephone interview that by putting on the Hanna Ghost Walk showcase, the people of Hanna and the surrounding area could see what the project was about and see it in action, just as visitors to the town would.

Novak, who is from Nova Scotia, has worked on simular projects in Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan and was brought to Hanna where he researched Hanna history and helped produce a script for the event.

Coronation has a high proportion of people moving to the town for employment in the oil and gas exploration and servicing fields and these people often need immediate housing and demand a more affordable type of dwelling as they also tend to have a shorter period of stay than the average resident.

ECA Review - Serving a niche The ECA Review often hears comments about how little of the news in the paper is from Coronation even though our office is located in Coronation.

The Coronation Review, as the ECA Review was first known as, was a local paper that wanted to grow and prosper, as is the nature of good businesses. To do so, we recognized that we had to reach people outside of Coronation.

Businesses in the area also wanted to reach the widest possible area for potential customers, as they too wanted to grow and prosper. It was in the best interest of the paper to keep those advertising dollars and hence, the decision to become the ECA Review, a regional paper that covers east central Alberta.

Our news coverage of Coronation is not any less than what it was 20 years ago.

What news coverage is less is the ‘submitted’ columns from the area; the sports news including bowling, hockey, curling and golf, school news, Chamber, library, Silver Club, Communities in Bloom committee updates and local people with local only news.

It’s unfortunate that these news columns are being transferred to a flyer produced with our tax dollars, the town newsletter.

We have only ever had one reporter/ photographer and we still do. We still cover Coronation town council and as much of the other events and meetings that we can get to, or know about.

We still continue to ask for those submitted articles.

We work long hours, well after 5 p.m.,

The article ‘Earthquakes, explosions and leaking wells’ article printed in March 19 issue the company name Cenovus was inaccurate when reporting on fracking under Fox Creek, Alberta.

The 4th paragraph should have read.

Kathy Klassen, Pastor of Adult Discipleship, First Alliance Church in Toronto goes as far as to say Christians need to vote for parties most serving the least of us—even at the cost of higher taxes.

Ironically, she speaks out of the same denomination where taxadverse Harper has been a long term member. Another pastor in the Alliance church said if Christians aren’t sensibly pouring into the lives of the oppressed, we have no impact.

Buying votes

by Herman Schwenk The Alberta PC’s are about to bring down their budget and have made noises about calling a snap election a year early to supposedly get a mandate to implement the budget. I think what they are really trying to do is take advantage of the Wildrose and Liberal opposition parties while they are in the process of choosing new leaders.

If they waited until next year when the election is supposed to be called the people will realize that this is still the same old PC government. By calling an early election they seem to be confident that if an election is called now they can secure a land slide victory Schwenk and thus be able to impose more draconian legislation on the citizens of Alberta as they have in the past with their property rights legislation.

I attended a meeting and a social event where discussions have taken place about services provided by the sitting MLA. Somehow over the years the PC’s with their landslide after landslide victories have been able to convince people that unless you have a government MLA representing your constituency you are not going to get the same service you would with an opposition MLA. Since the last election the Drumheller/ Stettler constituency has been represented by an opposition MLA. I was asked in a discussion by a person so “what has your MLA

done for you?” The implication being that the government will only provide service to citizens if they elect an MLA on the government side of the house.

If you take a close look at the record of this government there is a lot of truth to this implication. The person that I was talking to either is or was [I’m not sure which] a school board trustee. Clearly he felt that more government money would flow to the school board with a government MLA than with an opposition MLA. I have had indications from comments by municipal councilors that they almost go paranoid at the thought of being represented by an opposition MLA. I believe that the Wildrose MLA’s that crossed the floor were convinced by the Premier and other members of the government that they could get more government resources for the constituents by being on the government side of the house.

Kerry Towle the MLA from Innisfail/ Sylvan Lake said she decided to cross the floor because she could better represent her constituents. Why should that make a difference?

I was told that the government put more resources into High River as soon as Danielle Smith became a PC MLA instead of a Wildrose MLA. It would appear that this government is as morally bankrupt as previous governments. All citizens should be treated equally regardless of who is their MLA.

Rose loved travel and loved the arts: she frequented the ‘Citadel and Jubilee’ – especially in the days when the dress code involved long gowns!

Family was always a priority & she doted on the grandkids. She lived near Edmonton’s river valley as long as she could, and treasured Old Strathcona; her daughter, Susan Morrow, operated and revived ‘the Princess’ as a repertory theater for 15 years.

At 89, Rose moved to the Lodge in Castor and transferred in 2010 to higher care in Coronation. She entertained staff with her unexpected whit, and maintained genuine concern for others; one never knew what to expect! She passed away peacefully at 96 ½ years, on April 2, 2015.

Rose was predeceased by all her siblings, both husbands, her son Dennis, and grandson, Matthew. She leaves to remember her: Douglas (Janice) Duncan, BC, Susan (Stan Gent) Edmonds, WA,

Community mattered

by Dan Gorcak Let me begin by thanking Diane and the family for asking me to share a few words about my good friend. I am both humbled and honored.

Gary Maurice Ulseth joined our world on April 11, 1952.

He was the third child of Joyce and Dean Ulseth, following Gayle and Susan.

After Gary, came Wendy, Colin, Brenda, Corrine and Kelly to complete their family Ulseth of 8 children.

The Ulseth’s were farmers and Gary’s early life was pretty similar to any other child raised in a rural setting.

Values were straight forward and simple. The farm was a few miles south of Veteran, where Colin still resides.

The family lived across the street from the school in Veteran but would move out to the farm in the summer months. Dean also operated South Side Service in Veteran and Gary often could be found at the garage helping out in various capacities.

Gary and I became friends when we started school, so that puts our friendship in the 55 to 56 year range. Gary attended school in Veteran from grades 1 to 9 and then in Coronation for grades 10 through 12. As we grew older and into our teens we began spending more time together which resulted in a pretty close friendship.

His passion in early life was definitely sports. Oh how he loved to participate and talk about sports. In his early years he was a Maple Leaf fan and I was a Canadien fan so we

had quite a rivalry going.

Gary (or Dean as he was known in his early years) was skilled in sports, whether it be hockey, baseball, basketball, volleyball or whatever sport he tried.

He might not have been the most athletic specimen created but he made up for that with his knowledge of how to play the game. He just knew what to do and when to do it.

He was always a great teammate, not just because of his loyalty to the team, but because of his passion for winning. Losing really wasn’t on the radar. He knew how to exploit the opposition’s weakness and didn’t hesitate to share this with his teammates.

He wasn’t always right but that really didn’t matter.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that also at this time Gary already had his love of music. He would play the piano and sing at every opportunity.

After his school years, Gary went to work on the rigs, mainly with Precision Drilling. We still kept in contact, but he was away quite a bit so we didn’t see each other as often. Many friendships developed for him while he worked the rigs and I know he kept in touch with many of these people. He shared many stories with me and others of his rig working days; they were good times for him.

About this time or probably a bit earlier, he began dating Dianne Tellier. They made a nice couple right from the start

and Gary would have liked to ask her to marry him after about half a dozen dates.

He loved her dearly – I know this because he told me many times.

So after they had dated a couple years, he caught me one day and said he was going to propose that evening. I thought great, until he told me he was nervous and would I mind coming along. I suggested that it was probably a bit of a more intimate moment than I wanted to be part of.

So off he went, but he chickened out that night anyway. Shortly after, however, he did propose and Dianne accepted.

That same evening, at about 2:00 a.m., I heard my bedroom window open and as I awoke I could see legs coming through the open window. I jumped up and grabbed the legs and Gary said “It’s just me.” I asked him what the hell he was doing and he said he didn’t want to wake my Dad so he thought he would use the window.

His love of Veteran was intense Cont’d from Pg 8 He then told me Dianne had agreed to marry him and he wanted me to know as soon as possible.

So we sat on the bed talking. He was on cloud nine that night, as happy as a man could be. As we sat there talking, he says “Are you going back to sleep?” I said I was and he said “mind if I crawl in, I’m kind of tired.” So Gary and I slept together the night he proposed to Dianne, and as any of his sisters can attest, of course, I had to scratch his back before he went to sleep.

Gary and Dianne married on July 27, 1974 and were blessed with three children: Carla in 1975, Kelly Dean in 1978 and Kevin in 1981. Oh, how he loved and was so proud of you three.

He ended his rig working days shortly after he and Dianne were married, and began his farming life of working as a hand and then farming on his own. As the children grew, Gary and Dianne always lived in and around Veteran. He had to, because his love of Veteran and the surrounding area was intense. He couldn’t comprehend why anyone would want to live elsewhere.

He kept track of people better than anyone I know. His visits were legendary.

If you had an open door and a cup of coffee, you were on the hit list. He came over often to visit and sometimes the visits got quite long. One particular evening we both fell asleep while watching TV. When I awoke I told him to turn off the TV when he left and I went to bed. He just said “yeah, OK” and went back to sleep.

He was gone in the morning.

I know that as I speak about Gary, who had by this time become “Snowball”, everyone here has been thinking about a time, an incident or a favorite Snowball story, and there are a lot of them. This is a good thing. It is important that we share and reminisce.

Who else but Snowball would stop at Daysland on his way to Edmonton, because there were cars around the community centre, and lo and behold if there wasn’t a pancake breakfast to join in on.

Who else would go to the lodges, the assisted living, or the long term care regularly to play the piano and sing. The residents loved and adored him for that.

Who else but Snowball would suggest, after he and I woke up, having spent the night sleeping in his yellow Mustang (because we consumed about a dozen bottles of wine), that we should slip over and have coffee and a visit with Mrs. Kennedy ( an elderly former Veteran resident). Not only did we do this, but she was elated to see these two hung-over gentlemen.

Who else would give up many evenings during the Christmas season and even Christmas Eve to make sure the young and elderly alike would get a chance to experience Santa. He absolutely loved being Santa and as I think about it today, maybe, just maybe he was Santa.

As Gary and Dianne’s family grew into

fine young adults, the next step was to leave home, get married and have their own children. Carla married Brad Sparks in 1998 and they have three children; Dylan, Sydney and Pacey. Kelly Dean married Andrea Scheffelmaier in 2004 and they have two children; Kendra and Kyle. Kevin married Lisa Benedict also in 2004 and they have four children; Taniell, Taylor, Bryson and Jackson.

These nine grandkids made Gary so very, very proud. Grandpa loved you kids dearly.

Sometime ago Gary and Dianne relocated into the house where he grew up, across from the school. They instantly began a yard transformation, or should we call it a beautification program.

Gary and I would talk often about what looks good where, how to trim trees and grass, how to grow vegetables and so on.

It didn’t take long and they had their yard looking great. They were both so proud of what they accomplished, as they should.

Gary loved to entertain. There was no predicting when he might throw a wiener roast, a BBQ or just a real good meal.

They would cook up meals and the range of people he would invite was as wide as a prairie skyline. I have to also mention that these meals would often have “crub” on the menu. He was “the master crub chef”.

A few years ago Gary began employment at M&N Construction and you guys, who I know are here, should be proud because he spoke highly of your operation and really enjoyed his time with you. His M&N stories were always very positive in nature.

I also have to mention Gary’s love of the Edmonton Oilers. Even though that love has been tested severely the last few years, he always remained loyal. He knew what was wrong with them; he just never got to tell the right people.

A few years ago, Gary started a custom farming operation – mainly swathing and baling. He really enjoyed that. I think it kept the farming blood flowing through his veins.

As I start to wind down, I just want everyone to remember that this was a man who would do anything for anybody – you might have to return the favor, but that is what friends do for each other; they give and they receive.

In the last couple years Gary’s diabetes was gripping him more and more; but never did he complain. He always told me he felt fine but that he just needed that kidney. Even then we spent time driving the countryside sharing thoughts, reminiscing, trying to figure out what was wrong with the world, even though neither of us really knew what was happening outside the Special Areas.

Five or six weeks ago Gary fell ill and was admitted to hospital. His illness was more severe than his body and medicine could overcome.

‘Rest in peace my friend’ Cont’d from Pg 9 Even the love and prayers of his family and friends were unable to strengthen him enough to recover. On Monday, March 23 with his family close by, he left us.

Gary would be overwhelmed by the people who have gathered here today. It is a tribute, not just to Gary, but also to our community, that so many would come to support Dianne and the family through this difficult period.

Until we meet again; rest in peace my friend.

Gary passed away surrounded by his loving family on March 23, 2015 in the Red Deer Hospital at the age of 62 years.

Gary is survived by his wife Dianne; daughter: Carla (Brad) Sparks and their children, Dylan, Sydney and Pacey; Sons: Kelly (Andrea) Ulseth and their children, Kendra and Kyle; and Kevin (Lisa) Ulseth and their children, Taniell, Taylor, Bryson and Jackson.

Also his mother-in-law Ruth Tellier; siblings: Susan (Jim) Schetzsle, Wendy (Marv) Pixley, Colin (Barb) Ulseth, Brenda Smith (Randy Tellier), Corinne (Gaston) Gill, Kelly (Brian) Richter sisterin-law Dolores (Ken) Neal, brother-in-law Bryan (Betty) Tellier; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Gary was predeceased by his sister Gayle in 1980, brother-in-law Danny Smith in 1996, his parents Dean in 2000, Joyce in 2002 and his father-in-law Louis in 1990.

Service

The funeral service to honour Gary Maurice Ulseth took place at Coronation Community Centre, Coronation, Alberta on Wed. April 1, 2015 at 1 p.m. 0fficiating was Pastor Darrel Durksen. Musicians were Carolyn Devereux, Nils and Jeanette Berg; they played for the congregational hymn “Amazing Grace” as well as a special musical tribute “Danny Boy”. Gary’s sister Susan Schetzsle gave the scripture readings. Soloist Bob Hocking sang “Suppertime”. Long-time friend Dan Gorcak shared a tribute.

Family memories were shared by Gary’s sons Kelly-Dean and Kevin Ulseth.

A video tribute was played prior to the service. Honourary pallbearers were “All of Snowball’s Friends”. The active pallbearers were; Leslie Elliott, Archie Merchant, Dwayne Glasier, Lorne Anhorn, Gerald Anhorn, Jim Smith, Dale Brigley, Carter Stickel, Elden Stickel and John Simkin.

Family and friends gathered in the Community Centre for a luncheon prepared and served by the Coronation Funeral Lunch Committee.

The interment followed the lunch at the Veteran Cemetery, Veteran, AB. OBITUARY

Long time Castor resident Evelyn Matthias, long time resident of Castor, passed away March 26, 2015 at Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital in Castor, Alberta at the age of 93 years.

Evelyn was born the fifth child of Ida and Auguste Dumas in a small community near Montréal Quebec.

Evelyn was baptized Marie Eveline Alphéda Dumas although Matthias was known as Evelyn.

She was predeceased by her husband Allan Matthias in May of 1996, both her parents, older brothers Roland, Roger and Omer Dumas, older sister Augustine Fournier, younger sister Elaine Williams and their spouses.

She will be lovingly remembered by; her son Philip Matthias (Karen) of Calgary, her grandson Nolan Matthias (Jen) and great grandson Jackson all of Calgary; her daughter Marilyn Thornton (Bill) of Coronation, granddaughter Tracey Woods (Blaine) great grandsons Clayton, Scott and Brodie all of Camrose, grandson Kevin Thornton (Cathy) great grandson Carlin and great granddaughter Aspen all of Coronation and granddaughter Lisa Burgess (Justin) great granddaughters Breena and Anna of Lougheed.

At a young age Evelyn and the Dumas family moved to Alberta and settled in Lac La Biche where Evelyn and her older sister Augustine attended school at a convent administrated by Catholic Nuns.

After finishing school she moved to Edmonton and worked for the Hudson Bay Company.

While visiting her brother Omer she met and later in March of 1944 married Matthew Arnold Smith who was a flying officer in the RCAF and in the same

squadron as her brother Omer.

Evelyn returned to Edmonton where their son Matthew Philip was born prior to her being widowed.

At the suggestion of her brother Roger who was living in Castor she relocated and started her own hairdressing business.

Evelyn met Allan Matthias in Castor and they were married in June of 1948. Their daughter Marilyn Evelyn was born several years later.

Evelyn continued hairdressing and later she went to work for Our Lady of the Rosary Hospital, first as a ward aid and then in the administration office where she continued until her retirement.

Evelyn and Allan were long term residents of the Town of Castor and were always involved in the community.

They had many wonderful trips with the J.I. Case Company. They enjoyed good times at the cottage in the summer, first at Sylvan Lake and then at Moose Lake.

After retirement they spent the winters in Hawaii, a very favourite place. They appreciated nature, loved their pet dogs and budgie bird “Dickie.”

When the grandchildren came it was a special time and joy.

After Allan passed away Evelyn lived for many years at the Paintearth Lodge, and then as her health declined she moved to the long term care centre in December 2013 until her passing.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 2 p.m. in Knox United Church Castor, Alberta with Reverend Barbara Zimmerman officiating. Grandson Nolan Matthias offered the eulogy and long time friend Sylvia Wold gave a tribute.

Other memories from the grandchildren were given by Tracey Woods, Kevin Thornton, and Lisa Burgess.

Review Reporter The Canadian government approved the first genetically modified (GM) apple, the Arctic apple, on March 20.

In Febuary, the United States (U.S.).

Department of Agriculture approved the GM apple for growth and sale in the U.S. and almost exactly a month later Canada has followed suit.

Within days of receiving approval in the U.S., Okanagan Specialty Fruit, the creator of the Arctic Apple, entered into an agreement to be purchased by Intrexon a U.S. biotechnology firm.

This will add further economic pressure to bring this apple to market as soon as possible.

This apple doesn’t brown for 15 to 18 days after being cut.

New genetic material, including a plant virus and two different bacteria, is inserted to “silence” the browning gene.

The GM apple will look fresh, even when it’s not.

While the Arctic apple will be labelled with the name ‘Arctic’ it will not be labelled as a being a GM fruit.

Critics have wondered why a non browning apple was needed when there are other ways to keep the fruit from browning, like putting lemon juice on the cut pieces.

In a CBC radio interview, Neil Carter, owner of Speciality Fruits, said that he created the Arctic apple because as a grower he’s seen a decline in apple consumption and wanted to do something about it.

“The world is changing,” he said,”and we (as producers) have to change too.”

Alberta Health Services has refused to reopen the active beds in the Consort Hospital. The former MLA in this constituency has hinted that had he been re-elected the hospital would be back in business.

The PC Government of Alberta has used this method to buy votes with taxpayer money for a long time. The priority has been to get elected with a landslide.

Once elected the bureaucracy were then allowed to spend money without control or oversight. This has resulted in a top heavy over paid bureaucracy.

This is the real reason for our deficit.

You will notice that with all the premier’s twisting and turning on how to solve his revenue shortfall he has not talked about reducing bureaucrats or their pay, just reducing pay over time for front line workers.

Closing of AFSC Beth Causley

Review Reporter The Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) is closing it’s office in Castor.

The company provides farmers, agribusinesses and other small businesses loans, crop insurance and farm income disaster assistance.

AFSC has provided Alberta farmers with hail insurance for over 75 years and has grown into a diverse corporation with several core businesses; crop insurance, livestock price insurance, farm loans, commercial loans and farm income disaster assistance.

The ECA Review was told that the Castor office had been open for more than 42 years.

The ECA Review had attempted to speak with Kelly Thompson, the area manager (west) for AFSC but our message was returned

by Nicky Booth, Communication Supervisor for AFSC in Edmonton.

In a telephone interview Booth stated that the Castor office would be closing May 1.

She said that when the company looked at the flow of commerce they saw a need for consolidation and that Castor clients were able to be served in other locations, clarifying that the closest office would be in Stettler, 60 kilometres away from the Castor office.

Booth confirmed that eight other offices across the province were also being closed. Out of the three staff from the Castor office, only one of them is being transferred to the Stettler office while the other two staff members are being terminated.

No one at the Castor office would provide a quote to the press.

Three hundred and seventeen insurance clients from the area are served at the Castor office. Booth said that the company is taking the time between now and the May closing date “to work with the clients so that all clients understand what is happening and can transfer their files to other offices.”

When asked how she thought that the closure of the Castor office would affect farmers she said that AFSC “considered their clients and the efficiency for serving them” and that the company determined that it was not a significant impact on them.

“We are working closely with [our Castor clients]. We want the transition to be seamless and we want to continue with our unique financial service.

We want to find

efficiency to serve them,” Booth said.

“This is just one more thing that they are taking away from the area,” said Coronation councillor Brett Alderdice when the announcement was made at the Coronation town council meeting on March 30.

“They are taking it away from an area where all the farmers are,” said Coronation Mayor Mark Stannard.

CONSTRUCTION CREW FOREMAN FOREMAN III SALARY: $64,511 - $78,789 per annum

YOUNGSTOWN: The Special Areas Board requires a Construction Crew Foreman to supervise a 14 man crew in the construction of roads throughout Special Areas. This position is a permanent full time position and will be reporting to the Construction Supervisor.

The duties of this position will involve supervision of a crew in the construction and stabilization of local roads and work with third party engineering to ensure specifications are met. Supervise the construction camp, aid in hauling supplies, maintain timesheets, daily records and log books. Organize third party contractors in the supply and application of product for the purpose of dust control and soil stabilization. This position also includes minor repairs of equipment and instruction to operators in the care and servicing of equipment.

Record keeping is also a requirement. This position is responsible for a strong safety program.

During the off season, the candidate will perform routine servicing and repair of equipment as well operating equipment and other related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of 3 years’ experience in operating equipment and road construction. The successful applicant must have strong leadership and team work skill. A valid class 5 Drivers License is necessary. Supervisory experience and computer skills are an asset. Equivalencies will be considered. The successful applicant will be required to obtain a class 3 driver’s license within the first year of employment. Nature Alberta’s 45th birthday Submitted On April 4 the bravest of the brave ventured out to West Stettler Park for a Nature Alberta 45th Anniversary celebration.

It was a blustery day, with snow falling in the morning, a brisk east wind and the temperature reaching only four degrees.

April 4, 1970, was the date of incorporation of the Federation of Alberta Naturalists (now known as Nature Alberta) and that became the date to be commemorated by the local nature club, The Buffalo Lake Naturalists.

Biologist Tim Schowalter had put together a display of skeletal pieces which had been regurgitated by various birds in their pellets. Many participants

were surprised to learn that Kingfishers produced pellets full of froglet bones and ravens can regurgitated a pellet.

Schowalter supplied rubber gloves and sanitizer for those wishing to take apart an actual owl pellet.

This activity held the interest of children for a long time and prompted scientific discussion of birds, rodents and amphibians.

Otis the owl and Judy Boyd from Medicine River Wildlife Centre, answered questions from people in attendance and distracted them from the cold.

Otis, perched on Judy’s wrist, preened and gave a double wing wave back to his waving audience.

Battle River Shock seek international exposure

Submitted On April 4 the Shock held its first home game at ME Global Athletic Park in Lacombe.

The visiting Lloyminster Red Dogs came to provide an entertaining football game.

Although the weather attempted to put a damper on the teams, the clubs were not prepared to give in.

The well matched teams played a hard fought, back-and-forth game during the first half with neither team putting points on the board.

There were chances for both sides as they were able to march the ball down to inside the opponent’s 10 yard line.

Penalties were a factor, calling back scoring plays for both sides.

The Red Dogs were able to put points on the board with a converted touchdown in the third, seeing the momentum of the game swing to the Red Dog advantage.

A safety and another converted touchdown in the fourth, saw the final score of the game 16-0 in favour of Lloydminster.

year for the Battle River Shock (the Shock), a spring midget football club made up of players from many communities in central Alberta, including Stettler, Red Willow, Bashaw, Ponoka, Lacombe, Wetaskiwin, Maskawics, Camrose, Buck Lake.

Since being part of the Shock family since its inaugural year, co-head coach Maren Stevens has watched the club grow.

A fundamental part of the Shock belief is the promotion of the sport through play.

This will be a chance for the team to play American rules football, creating new and likely lasting friendships through the sport.

Last year, Stevens introduced the idea of an international game to the team and this year he has found an opportunity for the team to be part of a jamboree in August, hosted in San Diego, California.

As this was the Saturday of the Easter weekend, it was most fitting that a super-sized rabbit was in attendance and the children enjoyed a chance to pet and learn more about rabbits. Other exhibits were Buffalo Lake Naturalists’ historical documents and photographs, and a poster of Alberta owls.

Nature Alberta’s Important Bird Area and Alberta Bird Checklist booklets were free for the taking and Medicine River Wildlife Centre calendars and owl buttons were offered as well.

The Buffalo Lake Naturalists hold regular monthly meetings (indoors!) in Stettler and have several outdoor excursions planned as well, all focussed on nature study.

The Buffalo Lake Naturalists have been a member club of Nature Alberta since 1973.
