Bashaw’s Majestic Theatre marks 100th anniversary Lisa Joy

ECA Review Reporter Bashaw’s Majestic Theatre celebrated a milestone Sat. Aug. 22 - its 100th anniversary. Step back a century to 1915 when the Majestic was built. Alberta women were fighting for the right to vote and Albertans ratified the new liquor act – paving the way for prohibition. Streets were dry, dusty dirt until it rained, or the snow melted, and then they turned into soupy messes. Horses

and buggies crowded the streets with a few motorcars vying for space. In 1915, the first coast-to-coast land line phone call was made and Canadians were mailing letters to each other en masse. Agriculture was a top industry and threshing crews harvested crops. A loaf of bread cost six cents, a sirloin steak was 49 cents and eggs were 34 cents a dozen. Pollyanna Grows Up was a best seller and the song “It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary” topped the charts. Turn to Last, Pg 2

A process that began two and a half years ago has finally culminated in a new physician practising in Stettler. Dr. Marvin Bailey began accepting patients at the Stettler Medical Clinic on Monday after receiving his practice papers from Royal College (of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada). Bailey, who hails from South Africa, is one of the doctors recruited through the Stettler Town and County Physician Recruitment program. Moving to Stettler has been a positive experience explained Bailey. The recruitment team went above Bailey and beyond to make the doctor and his fiancé feel welcome when they arrived, even stocking the fridge and outfitting their new home. The efforts of the team made Bailey’s transition to Canada much easier. The process of coming to Canada to work is a lengthy one, described Bailey. Getting documents verified and to the proper authorities took time and was expensive. As well, physicians must pass a qualifying exam here in Canada to allow them to practice. The process from beginning to end is quite lengthy and physicians must be prepared to carry the additional financial burden for that period. A significant part of Bailey’s South

Mission of the Order of the Eastern Star Page 14

African practice dealt with severe trauma and diseases that are prevalent in poverty. Bailey expects a somewhat different aspect of practice in Canada with less trauma and more diseases related to aging or lifestyle. Bailey specializes in orthopedics, emergency room/trauma, surgery and is applying for obstetric privileges. He has a special interest in men’s and women’s health, as well as sports medicine and takes a team approach to treating patients. “You need to treat the whole individual,” stated Bailey. He sees complimentary practitioners like physiotherapists or psychologists as part of a patient’s entire treatment. Treatment of an individual is a 50/50 endeavour for Bailey where the patients participate actively with the doctor to improve their own health. Part of Bailey’s reason for coming to Canada was opportunity. He describes the economy of South Africa as quite bad with limited future opportunities. He and his fiancé have the eventual goal of Canadian citizenship. Bailey will be practising full time in Stettler and he encourages those without a family physician to visit him. He stressed the need for people to have a family doctor. Emergency care is available but without a family doctor to follow up on care, a patient’s health can suffer in the long run.

Last remaining theatre Cont’d from Pg 1 Vaudeville and silent movies, starring America’s sweetheart Mary Pickford and baggy pants Charlie Chaplin with his over-sized shoes, were all the hype. Movie tickets cost 10 to 15 cents. And during this time, the Village of Bashaw with a population of 250, built the Majestic Theatre. Now today – 100 years later – because of the foresight of a few, the restored Majestic Theatre is believed to be the last remaining theatre of its kind in Western Canada. “Places like the Majestic are essential to preserving the stories, to capture our Alberta history,” said Lois Mitchell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta on Aug. 22 at the Majestic’s Centennial Celebration in Bashaw. Mitchell added that the measure of a vibrant cultural sector in any community isn’t the size or number of renowned professional companies, but rather the strength of amateur arts programs. “Amateur companies have the ability to bring the arts directly into peoples’ lives in a profound way and places like the Majestic have the power to serve as true incubators of creativity in a community.” Betty Clark, from Friends

of the Majestic, said, “It’s truly remarkable,” the theatre is the last of the Boomtown style, which once dotted Alberta’s landscape in the 1900s and 1910s. The Majestic was home to silent movies, magic lantern shows, local theatre productions and early films with sound. For a while the theatre was converted into a Catholic Church before it was changed into a movie theatre in the 1940s and named the Dixy Theatre. In 1998, the Friends of the Majestic Theatre Society formed to restore and preserve the structure. They also started the Majestic Players, an amateur theatre group to fundraise for the theatre. In 2000, the Majestic was designated as an Alberta Registered Historical Resource. In 2004, the exterior of the Majestic was restored to its 1930 (circa) façade, and except for the white paint, the Majestic looks like it did in 1915. Andrea Newton, the great granddaughter of the Town of Bashaw’s founder, Eugene Bashaw, presented the theatre group a $2,100 cheque from the Bashaw family. “May your exterior siding remain solid and your great hall be forever filled with song, theatre and dancing feet,” she said.

The Stettler U12 Boys Soccer Provincial Champions visited Stettler Town Council Aug. 18 to be recognized for their achievement. “It’s a big job to hold up the Stettler banner when you’re out there,” Mayor Dick Richards told the team. The team had a 28-0 undefeated record for the season and won the provincials, held in Vermilion, with shut outs for every game. From the left: Asst. Coach Nadine Lang, Yannick Zondag, Gage Loyst, Lincoln Broemeling, Eric Bridge, Brody Lang, Mayor Richards, Frank Philipsen, Thomas Glasier, Jacob Cottam, Japheth Wildeboer, Hayden Smyth, Josh Deguzman and Coach Steven Wildeboer at the back. New Delburne councillor sworn in Debra Johnston

ECA Review Reporter Bill Chandler took the oath of office at the Aug. 18 Delburne council meeting as Delburne’s newest councillor. The resignation of former Coun. Judy Hogan triggered a by-election. However, the election was unnecessary as Chandler was the only nominee and therefore acclaimed to office.

Roadwork set to proceed

The 21 Avenue infrastructure upgrade is on track following word that Delburne received a Small Communities Fund (SCF) grant for $1,246,666. Total cost of the project is $1,870,000, one third of which will be borne by the village, a third by the province and a third federally.

Water tower leaning

The CNR water tower of the Anthony Henday Museum in Delburne is starting to lean slightly due to a large crack across the concrete base of the tower, causing part of the base to slope downwards. Mayor Ray Reckseidler, who is also president of the Anthony Henday Historical Society, is hopeful the organization can repair the structure if they are successful in attaining a grant through the Canada 150

Kitchen talk

by Rick Strankman, MLA Drumheller/Stettler Constituency There is a near-epidemic of provincial debt in Canada. B.C.’s debt is $65$70 billion—nearly $60,000 for every family of four. Manitoba’s debt exceeds $33 billion—$100,000 per family. Quebec’s gross public sector debt, according to the Montreal Economic Institute, stands at $277 billion—$134,000 per family. And Ontario has the dubious honour of being the largest sub-sovereign debtor in the world. It owes $314.5 billion. Interest rates are low, so debt servicing costs are manageable. Yet interest rates are like oil prices. They fluctuate. (Many will remember 20% home mortgages.) Today, Ontario pays $11.4 billion a year to service debt. Yet if interest rates should rise into the 6%-10% range, debt servicing costs could climb near $20-$25 billion, which would put enormous pressure on their health and education programs. (Every dollar spent on interest is a dollar less to spend elsewhere.) Between 1982 and 1992, Alberta piled up debt— about $23 billion. Based on our population at the time, the amount owed was roughly $35,000 for every family of four. Debt ate deep into the government’s ability to deliver core services. By 1992, nearly 10% of provincial revenue was devoted to servicing debt—an amount equal to 32% of health care spending, 36% of basic and advanced education, or 75% of the social services budget.

Joyce Webster Publisher/Editor publisher@ECAreview.com

Albertans were shelling out multiple billions in taxes for which they got absolutely nothing in return. When Ralph Klein took office in 1992, the one-year projected deficit was $2.8 billion, and the province was borrowing 25% of its annual revenue. Debt servicing costs were $1.4 billion per year. Almost immediately, Klein started reigning in the size and cost of government. Some people complained, although it was obvious that this level of borrowing and spending simply couldn’t be maintained. In 2004, twelve years after Klein became premier, Alberta declared itself debt free. Finance Minister Patricia Nelson said, “It’s over with. We can go home to our kids and our grandkids and say, ‘We have protected your future so you will not be carrying the burdens of the past.’” The government of that era did a great service to Albertans. It ensured that tax dollars would pay for real government services instead of being poured down a black hole simply to cover interest on debt. Future taxpayers were assured that they wouldn’t be paying for government services already consumed by their parents and grandparents. Today, Alberta is at a financial crossroads. Earlier this year, a financial report indicated that the province’s debt was on the cusp of $12 billion, with annual interest payments reaching $714 million. Turn to No debate, Pg 11

Bridge Construction Hwy 590 at the Red Deer River

PERIODIC BRIDGE CLOSURES

Construction of the new Kneehill County Administration/Medical Clinic building is in full swing. According to Thomas Sypkes of Shunda Construction, the site contractor, shingling of the roof will begin this week as well as window installation. Following that, roughing in of electrical and plumbing can begin. According to Kneehill County’s website, the project is due for completion in the spring of 2016. ECA Review/D.Johnston

No debate Cont’d from Pg 6 Nevertheless, instead of introducing a spring budget in the legislature that would have addressed the growing debt problem, the premier issued an internal order authorizing her government to borrow yet another $6 billion. No budget. No debate. More debt. Former Finance Minister Nelson was anxious for people to tell their children: “We have protected your future.” Rachel Notley is headed in the opposite direction. Thus far, her strategy for debt has been to accumulate more debt. But the real question she should be asking is whether Albertans ought to follow in the deep tracks of debt laid down by Ontario and Quebec, or forge our own path of fiscal responsibility by staying away from debt and controlling the cost of government.

Bulls 10, cowboys zero at Halkirk Bullarama Ten bullriders and 10 saddle bronc riders took part in the 20th annual Halkirk Bullarama on Sat. Aug. 22. The saddle bronc riders had a competitive day which ended up with Casey Bertram taking home the top

prize, a saddle, with a total of 147 points on his two rides. The bull riding wasn’t so successful as no one was able to stay on for the full eight-seconds on stock provided by Rafter Anchor and Outlaw

Buckers. A highlight of the event was Niki Flundra with her Liberty Horse Act, which she has also performed in Las Vegas. The event also included The Ladies

of the Heartland riding for Kira Richardson; a seven year old girl currently undergoing treatments for osteosarcoma. Nadine Maxwell of Botha took home the monies from the 50/50 draw.

Left, Quinton Bock, riding Rye & Coke, was one of the many cowboys who lost to the bulls at the Annual Halkirk Elks Bullarama on Aug. 22. None of the bullriders lasted the eight seconds. Above, Tyler Wilson riding saddle bronc, Grape Girl in Halkirk Sat. Aug. 22.

Located in CAMROSE next to the Smith Clinic LATISSE® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.03% is a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis used to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker, and darker. Eyelash hypotrichosis is another name for having inadequate or not enough eyelashes. Important Safety Information

If you are using, or have used, prescription products for any eye pressure problems, only use LATISSE® under close doctor care.

LATISSE® use may cause increased brown pigmentation of the colored part of the eye, which is likely permanent. Eyelid skin darkening may occur, which may be reversible.

Only apply at the base of the upper eyelashes. DO NOT APPLY to the lower eyelid. Hair growth may occur in other skin areas that LATISSE® solution frequently touches. If you develop or experience any eye problems or have eye surgery, consult your doctor immediately about continued use of LATISSE®. The most common side effects after using LATISSE® solution are itchy eyes and/or eye redness. If discontinued, lashes will gradually return to their previous appearance. Full Prescribing Information has been provided to your doctor, or you can click here.
