very pleased with his work. Krips said that the accolades should go to his staff and Flagstaff County who worked hard to secure the project with Paterson Grain. He also said that there may be 15 - 20 construction jobs available and around 10 - 15 permanent jobs upon completion of the build and that Paterson Grain have indicated that where possible, they will source local services and materials.

APPROXIMATELY 1200 UNITS

Paterson Grain has been given approval to build a new unit train loading facility near Daysland, town council learned at their regular meeting on July 28. “The efficient truck handling capability proposed for the new Daysland Facility, combined with highly efficient rail car loading will allow Paterson Grain to offer excellent customer service to

local producers even during the busy harvest season,” a press release from Paterson Grain said. This is Paterson Grain’s third Inland Export Terminal in Alberta and has capacity of over 55,000 metric tonnes and promises to incorporate “the most modern grain handling and storage concepts” which assists to minimize train loading times. Mayor Watt thanked CAO Rod Krips for all the work he did with Paterson Grain saying she was

Most valuable player’s (MVP) were: Cody Cooper in the first game; Brynn Scoville in the second game; Isaac Grubisic in the third game and Zac Bossert in the fourth game. In the final game there were two MVP’S, Keaton Shipton and Evan Golby. The tournament MVP went to Isaac Grubisic who played outstanding baseball all weekend. Wade Golby had a hard time picking MVP’S, if he could, everybody would have gotten an award. This group of kids played there hearts out. The final game was a nail biter with a 6 - 5 win. Evan Golby pitched the entire game and Isaac Grubisic hit the winning run in. Every kid showed up to play and their fielding was exceptional with very few errors. Communities in Bloom Skystone Engineering 2015 Fall judges in Coronation TRAINING COURSES by Sheri Wuzinski The Communities in Bloom (CiB) volunteers were host to two outstanding judges from the CIB judging committee on July 22. Sherry Cote and Dr. Mohyddin Mirza spent the day in Coronation with a jam packed itinerary. It was evident that Sherry was the warm and fuzzy judge who loved seeing all the progress in our town and had some wonderful questions that actually showcased our town better than we could, just by showing it off. Then Dr. Mirza was the quiet visionary type who came up with the

most profound questions when you least expected them. They went all over town making stops at the museum, the transfer station, the golf course, the ball diamonds, all the parks and even out to the Zinger Barn. A wonderful lunch was served by the Dafoe’s out at the dam where we were joined by all the volunteers who assist throughout the year. We really do have a gorgeous little town and I was very proud when the judges commented on something that has been done in such a small town with such a huge heart and passion for keeping up everything that we do.

OBITUARY

Lilly (Heidebrecht) Vreeman (nee Kary)

Lilly (Lil) was born on July 1st, 1925 at Zetland, Alberta, the seventh and last child born to Chris and Emily (nee Heinz) Kary. She was called Home to be with her Lord on June 26th, 2015, just five days before her 90th birthday. Lil will be lovingly remembered by her husband John of Clearwater, B.C., to whom she was married for 44 years; her son, Kerry (Phyllis) Heidebrecht of Vernon, B.C.; her daughter, Sheila (Byron) Anderson of Little Fort, B.C.; her grandchildren, Daryl (Nancy), Alisa (Ed), Jesse (Colleen), Peter (Shannon) and Kathryn (Brody); her greatgrandchildren, Grace, Nate, Hope, Lillian, Fynn, Kiana, Hayden, Nicolas and another one to arrive in the fall. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Peter Heidebrecht; her parents, Chris and Emily Kary; two sisters, Martha Burtis and Paulina Rennich; and four brothers, Adolph Kary, Robert Kary, George Kary and Gus Kary. Lil was born and raised on the family farm at Hemaruka and received her education there at a nearby country school, mostly comprised of children that had the last name of Kary as the extended family was a large one. She grew up on the farm, working hard, and surrounded by the support of her family, friends and church. Lil left Hemaruka when her parents sold the farm and moved to Lacombe, Alberta in 1948. She went to

Calgary, worked at the Carolina Restaurant while also attending Berean Bible College for a year or two. On April 7th, 1951 she married Peter Heidebrecht in Calgary and settled into farm life at Lacombe where Peter had bought his parent’s farm. On February 13th, 1964 Peter died at the age of 43 years of cancer and in July 1967, Lil moved from Lacombe with her children to Kelowna, B.C. In April, 1971 she married John Vreeman and moved up to Clearwater where she remained until John’s retirement. They then moved to Kelowna and resided there from 19892007 at which time because of failing health, they moved back up to the Clearwater area so they could receive the care they needed and be close to Sheila. A Graveside Service took place at the River View Cemetery in Clearwater, B.C. with a Celebration Of Lil’s Life following in the Chapel of North Thompson Funeral Services on the day of her 90th Birthday, July 1st, 2015. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family through Bethel Funeral Chapel Ltd., 5605-27th Street, Vernon, B.C. V1T 8Z5 (250-5421187) or bethelchapel@uniserve.com

Halkirk group trying to save village school Beth Causley

ECA Review Reporter J.D and Sandra Johnston, parents from Mother Teresa School in Halkirk, came to the County of Painteath council meeting on July 30 to talk about cutbacks to teacher’s hours at the school. They requested a letter of support from council asking if more funding could be available for the school and suggested it be sent to the principal of the school, Veronica Pinkoski, Superintendent Charlie McCormack and trustee Rob Nichols. All agreed to write the letter of support. The school has 37 students from grades 1 through 9 and did have 3.1 full time teacher positions but as of June 23 a budget cut saw the teacher position down to 2.3 for the school. Johnston presented to council an email written by the group and sent to Pinkoski, which stated that Byemoor school with 33 students has 2.85 teachers and Brownfield with 34 students has 3.1 teachers and stressed to her the importance of finding the funding to keep the .75 of the

teacher position. “Losing .75 of a teacher has repercussions far deeper than balancing a budget,” the email stated. Johnston told council that Mother Teresa School has classes with four and five different grades in one class and that the school group is looking at possibly cutting Shop and Home Economic classes as they are classes that take place in Castor. While the group also looked at parents volunteering their time to teach these classes themselves, they have found that it can’t be done as policies state that a teacher must still be present. Johnston also stated that a teacher cannot teach a class they aren’t paid for, even if they wanted to. Johnston also said that the group had considered the potential of the school becoming a “blended” school, one where there were physical teachers but also where using technology with online resources was part of the curriculum. Johnston questioned council if it was possible that the school taxes in the community be put

toward their school but council said that wasn’t possible. CAO Tarolyn Peach explained that all school taxes were essentially pooled and then divided out to both public and catholic schools dependant on the number of students of each school. While there is lots of support from the community with fundraising activities, the Elks and casino incomes it was clarified that private persons cannot pay for a teacher or administration at a school. “A school is paramount to the success of a small town, which in turn is essential to the survival of a community,” the group wrote. The Johnston’s have a meeting with the Clearview Board on August 24 and also meeting with the Superintendent in August.

State of Awareness for County declared

With many counties in Alberta declaring states of emergency due to lack of rainfall and grasshopper devastation, council debated about declaring a state of

Concerns over false alarms Cont’d from Pg 1 explained Watt, and the false alarms tie up emergency crews. “Police are getting concerned with false alarms,” said Watt. Discussion enfolded into the increase of the amount of door to door sales people that council have encountered. “I’m getting a little irritable about this,” said Coun. Kuslik, who suggested that the out of town business licences given to these types of companies be higher than the current $20 that everyone pays regardless of where they live or where their business is located. No other discussion was held on the subject of raising the licence fee for out-of-town businesses. ECA Review/C. Scoville Mayor Watt asked administration to research alarm system companies “so it’s a positive experience for residents and not a negative one for the RCMP.” “We want to know [all companies coming into Daysland] are legit,” said Deputy Mayor Butch Robertson.

Education for council

Council will meet once a month to watch videos that were bought by CAO Krips as an educational tool for council. The videos, called “Good Governance by George” are a series produced by George B. Cuff and according to Cuff, are a training tool for council. The videos claim to take a broad look at governance, what it is and some of the problems associated with councils and boards who misunderstand the basic functions. Cuff served four terms as mayor of Spruce Grove and George is also a past president of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (198283) and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (1988-89). - Amanda Harder; 13-15 Barrels Blayde Melaney; Pony Express - Brittany Dommasch; Wild Cow Milking - Greg Moulton Team. Back this year was the 2nd Annual Meston Invitational on Aug. 3. Jax Meston, 12, and Maria Meston, 14, spearheaded the event to raise money for the Alberta Children’s Hospital in care of the Rotary Flames House. Meston said the event was started last year to help an Alix family who was staying at the Rotary Flames House while their son was hospitalized for cancer, and eventually passed. “That place provided something really special for them,” said Meston. “That place is something near and dear to our hearts.” She added that the Tees 4H Wranglers helped and many volunteers in the area helped with the steer riding and barrel racing fundraiser Monday. “It gave everybody a good feeling at the of the day.”

Dust flew as heavy hoofs hit the Tees rodeo grounds over the long weekend with more than 450 contestants vying to be top cowboy or cowgirl in their category. Tees’ 40th Annual Rodeo - sanctioned by the Central Alberta Rodeo Association and dubbed “the Biggest Little Rodeo in Canada” - was held Aug. 1 and 2. The event featured everything from a Wild Pony Race, Men’s Costumed Barrel Racing, a Pony Express Race and Mile Stock Horse Race to beer gardens with live entertainment and music by Ransom and Backroad Traveler. “We had full entries in all events,” said organizer Tanya Meston Tuesday, adding that participants came from across Central and Eastern Alberta. Meston said Tees Rode ads extra events for the kids, which contributes to the rodeo’s popularity. The winners were: Saddle Bronc - Nick Patterson; Bareback - Justin Aspden and Jake Plotts - tied for first; Bull Riding Sean Clark; Ladies BORROW PAYMENT Cow Riding $ 10,000 $49.93 Martina Holtkamp Current 5 Year Fixed $ 20,000 $99.85 and Kim Rate 3.09* $ 50,000 $249.64 Arbuthnott - tied $10,000 $47.79 for first; Ladies $100,000 $499.25 Current 5 Year Fixed $20,000 $95.58 Barrels - Jalaine Rate 3.09* $ 50,000 $200,000 $998.54 $238.94 Anderson; Tie $10,000 $47.79 $100,000 $477.88 $300,000 $1,497.81 $20,000 $95.58 Down Roping $200,000 Pay off Your $955.75 Bills $400,000 $1,997.08 $ 50,000 Duane Ganske; $238.94 $300,000 $1,433.63 $500,000 $2,496.35 $100,000 $477.88 Lower Your Payments $400,000 $1,911.50 Team Roping - Kyle $200,000 $500,000 $2,389.38 Keates and Jesse $955.75 Refinance or Buy a Home! $300,000 $1,433.63 Call Dale Field Martin; 7-12 Steers • No Application Fee $400,000 $1,911.50 1-866-880-8829 - Dylan Conners; $500,000 $2,389.38 • Inquiries & Applications by Phone Email: dalefield@mcsnet.ca Field 1-866-880-8829 13-15 Steers - Call RyleeDale • Credit Good - Fair - Poor www.northernalbertamortgages.ca Storey; 7-12 Email: dalefield@mcsnet.ca • Money for Almost Any Purpose Breakaway - www.norther Trey Call Dale Field 1-866-880-8829nalbertamortgages.ca Members of Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association, Erion; 13-15 Email: dalefield@mcsnet.ca Better Business Bureau, Canadian Institute of Breakaway Mortgage Borkers & Lenders and www.norther Haydennalbertamortgages.ca Warren; Licensed by Real Estate Council of Alberta 7-12 Barrels

Excited for the trip

Cont’d from Pg 7 Katie had to work but Danny said that they were both excited for the trip and he was looking forward to seeing the big cities in Japan like Tokyo. Last year’s exchange student Emily Campbell was there to answer questions and show some of the things she got while in Japan.

Oilfield Services She said she still keeps in touch with her exchange students and would recommend the program to everyone. She admitted that the language was difficult and that it was a bit of a culture shock, being one of the few Caucasian people in Wake. The night also included live entertainment with piano music, singers, a Hanna Ghost Walk performance and ending with Hanna’s very own band with singer and guitarist Mayor Chris Warwick. The night was a celebration put on by Hanna in Bloom, part

of the Communities in Bloom project of Canada. Gwen Snell, Community Services Director for the town, said that the Community in Bloom judges were quite impressed with Hanna but the town won’t know who won until the official announcement at the National Conference in Kamloops Sept. 30. She contributes the success to the Bloom to you awards that were given out by the town during the summer season and stressed that it wasn’t about how big the

display was or even that you had a display but more that you were looking after your property, keeping it clean and neat and that it was an all year round attitude of the community.

“It’s about how we view ourselves and it tells people coming into Hanna that this community must have pride in itself making them think it’s a good place to live,” said Snell.

Tax relief given for hay Cont’d from Pg 3 as they had seen higher rainfall over the spring and summer. Many councils though, expressed concern over the lack of rainfall other areas have seen. Reeve George Glazier commented on the various stages of growth of some crops as you travel throughout the county giving the example of fields of canola with some crops still green and others just miles away in full, yellow bloom saying that the difference in rainfall was huge. He also stated that even with the lack of rain the lawns were still green. A tax relief has already been given for hay, which has taken a huge hit due to the lack of rainfall and has seen farmers looking for land for pasture and hay. A number of councillors said that they had already had calls of concern about the county declaring the state of emergency but the decision from council was if they did do that the only real benefit would be to assist with extra funding and that it brings attention to the area. While there is still time to declare

the state of emergency everyone is hoping they won’t have to.

More construction for landfill

Progressive Waste will be building a new entrance in the Coronation landfill and construction will begin as soon as development permits are handed in and approved by the county. Dan Rochette and John Rush from Progressive Waste presented the proposal to council which will move the entrance from the north side of the landfill off Twp Road 370 onto a side road which will help reduce truck traffic on the busier township road. The entrance will be moved to the east side along the road and will help redirect trucks south along the eastern border of the landfill and then directly west along the south end of the site. The construction would also move the facility buildings and infrastructure to the south end. John Rush said that they hoped it would also help with illegal dumping and that the new plan is “a long term solution to a lot of problems.”

Good turnout for Big Valley MĂŠtis Rendezvous Debra Johnston

ECA Review Reporter Lively, jigging fiddle music filled the air prior to the opening ceremonies of the MĂŠtis Hivernant Rendezvous held in Big Valley July 31 to August 2. Over 175 people attended the 12th annual rendezvous, some far as far away as the Northwest Territories. Visitors were treated to a number of activities including music, story telling, games, meals and a talent contest featuring singing, jigging and

fiddling. A number of displays and silent auction items filled the Big Valley Seniors Centre, the meeting place for the rendezvous.
