They decided to bring the coal back to the family in St Odenrode, along with a few sacks filled with potatoes. When they arrived in the town, the Ardennes breakthrough occured, so the family insisted the crew leave immediately. “Everyone cried because we would never see each other again,” said Fielding. However, 16 years later in 1961, when Fielding was station in Germany with NATO, he decided to pay the family in Holland a surprise visit. When he knocked on the door a young man, about 21 years old, answered the door and Fielding asked him if the Verheggen’s still lived here. The young man exclaimed, “You must be Charlie!” Fielding replied and said “You must be Peter but you wouldn’t remember me as you were five years old.”

The young man replied “Yes, we remember your crew, you gave us food when we were hungry and coal when we were cold.” After that initial meeting, Fielding kept in contact with the family every Christmas for 35 years, but lost touch with them in 1996. In 2004, Fielding and his son travelled to Europe to find the family but were unable to do so. It was only until late 2012 that Fielding was able to reconnect with the family. One of Fielding’s sons found the phone number of the youngest Verheggen son, a boy who was born after the war and named Carl, which means Charlie in Dutch. On May 1, 2013 Fielding’s story was published in St Odenrode’s Dutch newspaper. The article was published to show the community’s respect and gratitude for their freedom. Fielding is now 94 years old and lives in Hanna, AB. He recalls his time overseas like it was yesterday and is thankful he has once again found the family in Holland he helped during the war nearly 70 years ago.

At around 9 p.m. on July 22 Bassano RCMP received the call that a woman had been shot at a rural residence approximately three kilometres east of the Town of Bassano. VIEWPOINTS Newspapers far from obsolete

Newspapers are alive and well in Canada. Eight in 10 Canadians have read a newspaper in the last week in print or on a newspaper site. And each day, more than half of Canadians read. If we just consider print newspapers for a moment, today there are 21 per cent more print newspapers than there were in 1970. Furthermore, there were 10 new print newspapers launched in last year. Canadians love print newspapers. Many newspapers offer flyers both in print and electronic form. Eighty five per cent of Canadians use flyers – and by far (90 per cent) tell us they use the print flyer. Canadians are embracing newspapers across all devices. Research shows the average Canadian touches newspaper media six times in a day: two times in print, two times on the web, once via tablet and once via phone. Canadians want newspapers; they also want newspaper ads. They expect newspapers to have ads and trust advertising in newspapers both–in print and online– more than ads in other media. So why the misconception about our newspapers? The data for Canadian newspapers is not the case in the United States. And their bad news spills over the border. In the U.S., cities might have one local paper. In Canada, many of our cities have lots of options in terms of newspapers. More papers equal more competition which keeps the industry on its toes. As such, Canadian papers provide readers and advertisers with lots of innovative options such as more colour, unique ad shapes and placement, QR codes, multimedia opportunities and more. In the U.S., papers had the opportunity to get sleepy (and they did). Newspapers in Canada are vibrant. About a quarter of all ad dollars are spent on newspapers. This roughly matches the amount spent on TV and is more than the amount spent on internet advertising. Advertisers clearly agree on the power of newspapers. Suzanne Raitt, VP Marketing and Innovation, Newspapers Canada

“Hire a Student” important Dear Editor, I agree with Mr. McFadzean’s comments in his letter to the editor in the July 25 issue of the ECA Review titled ‘Taxation destroys jobs’, but I argue that “Hire a Student” programs are an important exception to the rule. These particular students are taking a summer break from post-secondary institutions, which should help them get a good job upon graduation, but they are not ready for the workplace yet. The Canada Summer Jobs and similar programs are designed to give job experience in the students’ areas of training and to provide a needed community service. So, no Robert, I haven’t forgotten my Reform roots. Leon Benoit, MP Mannville, AB

middle names of the baby’s grandfather, Prince Charles.

ECA Review Reporter The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge didn’t veer from tradition when it came to naming their newborn son. The royal baby, at last, has a name: George Alexander Louis. Kensington Palace revealed July 24 that the third-in-line to the throne will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge. The last British royal named George was the boy’s greatgreat-grandfather King George VI, who was Queen Elizabeth’s father. Alexandra is the Queen’s middle name, and may have inspired the name “Alexander.” Louis -- to be pronounced “Lou-ee,” not “Lewis” -- is one of Prince William’s middle names, as well as one of the

Coronation’s royal history On April 11, 1935 Coronation Town Council decided to have an illuminated address sent from the Town of Coronation to his Majesty George V, the boy’s great-great-great grandfather for the occasion of the 25th anniversary of His Majesty’s accession to the throne. Not even a year later on January 20, 1936 King George V died and his son George VI, who was second-in-line to the throne was crowned King after his older brother King Edward VIII abdicated--becoming the first King in Great Britain to abdicate in over 500 years. Also, keeping with Coronation’s royal history, George Street was named after the late King George V.

The East Central Bulls won gold at the AA Alberta Championship in Okotoks July 25 - 28. This year the team comprised of: (L - R) Front row: Mason Love-Hollman (Red Deer), Chase Logan (Oyen), Gage Nelson (Hardisty). Middle row: Brandon Buxton (Amisk), Brooke Fawcett (Consort), Damon Zimmer (Heisler), Greg Nelson (Veteran). Back row: Teryll Sherman (Forestburg), Brendan Logan (Oyen), Gavin Logan (Oyen), Hayden Schetzsle (Veteran), Carver Zimmer (Coronation). Coaches: Brad Zimmer (Assistant coach), Graham Schetzsle (Head coach) and Barry Logan (Assistant coach).

East Central Bulls win gold medal After completing the preliminary rounds of Baseball Alberta play with a win - loss record of 17 - 1, the 12 and under East Central Bulls headed to Okotoks, on July 25, as the favourite to win the AA Alberta Championship. After a crucial, nail-biting 6 - 4 win over Camrose, the Bulls defeated Sherwood Park in convincing fashion on July 26. This set up a July 27 afternoon game against the Okotoks Outlaws. After defeating the Outlaws three times previously in the season, the Outlaws had their way with the Bulls, winning 14 - 4. This put the pressure on the team to beat St. Albert on July 28 in order to reach the gold medal game. The Bulls came out swinging furiously, as the first five batters of the game reached with base hits, eventually scoring seven runs in the first inning. This led to a shutout victory, setting the stage for a rematch with Okotoks for in the championship game on July 28. The host team, Okotoks, seemingly had all the momentum going into the final game. With a win over the Bulls on the previous day, and the home crowd and home field, the smart money was on the Outlaws. However, a scrappy, resilient Bulls squad erased a 5 - 3 deficit in the sixth inning, to eventually secure a 9 - 6 win, to win the AA Alberta Baseball Championship. The victory sends the Bulls to Red Deer August 2 - 4 to compete in Alberta Baseball AAA championships and also to Swift Current, Saskatchewan to play in the Western Canadian Championships August 16 - 18.

It’s been a very successful season thus far, and the Bulls hope to keep it going.
