97% of the world’s water is in oceans. The remaining 3% is fresh water. That 3% of fresh water divides into 77% contained in icecaps and glaciers, 22% in groundwater aquifers (drinking water) and 1% in lakes and streams.
1. Fill your bowl with warm water. 2. Gently place the egg in the water. What happens? 1. Remove the egg and stir at least one cup of salt into the water. Stir until you can’t see any grains of salt. 2. The water will look cloudy. Place the egg in the salty water. What happens?

Dahlgren receives Pioneers of Rodeo award Logan Taylor
ECA Review Reporter This year Frank Dahlgren of Cadogan, Alberta received the esteemed Pioneers of Rodeo award this year at the Calgary Stampede, getting a champion’s welcome at the Stampede for the extraordinary time he has spent competing in the rodeo. Mr. Dahlgren first started attending the stampede in 1953, trailing bucking horses down to Calgary when he was only 12.
In 1957 he started as a barn-hand with Hank Willard the chuck wagon legend. And the next year he began competing as an outrider with Jack Gill. It didn’t take long for this tremendous young horseman to be recognized. He went on to compete in wild horse racing, wild cow milking, and saddle bronc. But wagon racing has always been Frank’s favourite event, even his favourite to watch after he retired in 1978. “It was the one that kept drawing me back,” he said. Frank competed in the Calgary
Stampede often and did very well, but didn’t receive a buckle until 1973, as an outrider in the wagon races. He says the biggest change to the sport of rodeo since he started has been the money, “Both the cost of competing in rodeo and the winnings have increased, and as a result things have become much more professional. It used to be just a hobby.” Frank still deeply enjoys rodeo, despite no longer competing. “I look forward to spring every year,” he said.

Horne misled Albertans on High River Hospital The revelation that High River General Hospital faces a drastic cutback in long-term care beds following the flooding disaster shows Health Minister Fred Horne deliberately misled Albertans by saying services at the facility would return to pre-flood levels, the Wildrose Official Opposition said today. On July 26, Horne was quoted as saying “We’re going to restore the health services the way they were in operation prior to the flood incident.” However, the United Nurses of Alberta have revealed today that 35 beds (25 long-term care, 10 alternatelevel-of-care) at the hospital will be eliminated. Wildrose Official Opposition Leader and Highwood MLA Danielle Smith said the bed eliminations will have devastating consequences for family members in the community and blasted Horne for misleading the community about their hospital. “Minister Horne promised High River that their hospital would return to pre-flood service levels. That promise has been broken,” Smith said. “Now, we have no idea what will be left of our hospital or what further closures and reductions are planned. Minister Horne needs to stop the misinformation and come clean about what further services are being cut at the High River Hospital. His claims that services won’t be affected are simply not credible.” Smith said if Horne and the PC government will use a natural disaster as cover to close down services at small hospitals, there’s no telling how low they will go in slashing front-line services across the province. “This is about as low as you can get,” Smith said. “Talk about kicking a community while we are down. Albertans should be very concerned that this government is willing to gut services in smaller centres right after a devastating natural disaster.”

And that’s just what is public. The Conservatives have been accused of stonewalling the RCMP investigation into the whole tawdry affair. Instead of giving us the straight goods, Mr. Harper has clamped down and put on a cone of silence. LEGISLATURE
NEW BUSINESS ANALYST
Time for a re-assessment
Rick Strankman, MLA Drumheller-Stettler The citizens of Drumheller may be facing a very serious issue with the release of the recent flood hazard map released by Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD). The map has designated a significant portion of the residences in the Drumheller valley as being in a “floodway.” With this designation, the provincial government will be registering caveats on the affected properties to ensure nobody unknowingly buys a floodway property without prior knowledge. As most of us can appreciate, this would be the responsible thing to do for the protection of homebuyers across Alberta. However, in the case of the Drumheller Valley, many people feel it has been improperly assessed and that it should be reas-
sessed by ESRD. A number of homeowners have contacted my Drumheller office with their concerns about the impact this will surely have on property values and resale of their homes. With the good planning by the town of Drumheller and flood mitigation work that was done throughout the valley, it should have Strankman reflected these efforts in the new maps issued by ESRD. It seems that these efforts have been overlooked in the new hastily issued maps that have been described as a “death sentence” for the town. Attempts at this time are being made to have ESRD review their
findings and take into consideration all of the factors that could drastically change the disposition of a great many properties in the area. As your Member in the Alberta Legislature and a Member of the Official Opposition, there are responsibilities that I must fulfill. Opposing legislation, policies or actions by the government that is detrimental to the Drumheller-Stettler constituency, is crucial to protecting the viability of your property. In this particular case, exposing decisions made by the Alberta government that will have a negative effect on homes in the Drumheller valley is a critical step in the corrective actions which will not unfairly penalize homeowners is also a responsibility of my office. Terracotta, wood, and warm tones are all the rage
Fun, food, and relaxation
and cranny. To stay in keeping with the latest trends, pots and containers should be made of terracotta, wood, or stone. These can be found in natural colours or in vibrant shades like the warm tones of your patio furniture. In the yard, pots decorate pathways and bring a touch of colour and warmth to the landscape. Speaking of landscaping, flowers that bloom all summer long are in great demand again this year. We’re talking about gardens that are in flower from spring to fall. Let yourself succumb to the charms of ornamental grasses, and you’ll be right in keeping with the trend.
Pots here, there, and everywhere
Be greener than green
Container planting, far from being a thing of the past, is more popular than ever. Balcony gardens and urban vegetable plots are definitely in. Why? Because this type of gardening is ultra “green”. You can savour your own potted organic tomatoes, grow fresh herbs to sprinkle over your pasta, and plant fragrant native flowers in every nook
You can never be green enough, or so they say. For 2013 and into the future, opt for methods that save water and energy, such as rainwater recuperation, the installation of a drip irrigation system, and lowenergy lighting. In other words, think first and foremost about the environment as you plan your garden and yard.
PHOTO: JUPITERIMAGES / THINKSTOCK
The infatuation with cocooning or outdooring, or whatever else you’d like to call this phenomenon, is catching. People want to make the most of their homes and are organizing their yards so they can spend as much time there as possible, day as well as night. Outdoor kitchens and living areas are more popular than ever, and numerous products are in the stores to prove it. The beauty of outdoor furniture is remarkable, and the quality of the materials and fabrics, exceptional. Forget about those soaking wet cushions after a few drops of rain, or colours that fade with exposure to the sun!
Wood furniture is still popular for 2013. It can be elegant or rustic and it always fits perfectly with consumers concerned about the environment. But, because wood is more expensive to buy and also requires upkeep, many people are turning towards synthetic rattan, a resin that can be recycled and that is often mistaken for a natural fibre. The trend in colours for cushions and accessories is turning towards warm tones, such as red, poppy, lemon yellow, royal blue, or emerald green. These are the same colours that are dictating summer clothing fashions this year.
For 2013, outdoor furniture is embellished with accessories in warm tones such as red, poppy, lemon yellow, royal blue, or emerald green.

Plastic is out; long live terracotta! That is a pretty accurate summary of the trends that will shape the 2013 gardening season. Green, as in environmental and natural, is everywhere. With eco-friendly design in the spotlight, the yard is being transformed into an outdoor room where all the family loves to hang out.
The trendiest balcony gardeners use pots and containers made of terracotta, wood, or stone.

CHALKBOARD DÉCOR Who said that writing on a chalkboard was the prerogative of teachers? Even though chalkboards are falling out of favour in classrooms, chalk and slate are now finding a place in the comfort of our homes as a decorative focal point. With chalkboard paint, available in a variety of colours, you can turn any surface into a useful fully-erasable surface. If you like this idea but are short on inspiration, here are a few ideas to take note of — in chalk of course!

Alternative measures in best interests of the public Cont’d from Pg 5 Along with Opposing and Exposing the shortcomings of the government, it is critical that we as the Opposition Propose alternative measures that would be in the best interests of the public. In light of the impact the decisions will have on the town of Drumheller, it is imperative that ESRD review their data to ensure all the factors have been included
in their decision. In early July, I was in attendance at a meeting with federal Public Safety Minister Vic Toews and town officials, to discuss flood mitigation and the successful actions that were taken by the town of Drumheller that minimized flood damage in the valley. In the meetings Minister Toews commended the town of Drumheller’s actions and said it
was an example of how to do proper flood mitigation. The town of Drumheller officials and I are committed to pressuring ESRD to re-assess the final data that can play a significant role in Drumheller’s future. For more information you can view the flood maps on the ESRD interactive website at: www. envinfo.gov.ab.ca/FloodHazard/.

SPORT Shorts • Greg Cote of the Miami Herald: “Chicagoans were outraged to see a photo of Justin Bieber in the Blackhawks locker room posing with the Stanley Cup. What that tells us is, except for adolescent girls who haven’t defected to One Direction yet, just about everybody hates Justin Bieber.” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha World-Herald: “The Edmonton Oilers fired coach Ralph Krueger over Skype. Ah, the age we live in. Krueger was then able to moon the owner on Instagram.” • Cote again: “The Marlins had a magician, Michael Grandinetti, performing during a recent game. Fans were disappointed, though, when he failed to make owner Jeffrey Loria disappear.” • Alex Kaseberg on O.J. Simpson, who has gained a few pounds while in jail: “O.J. Simpson is so fat he wants to go on a long slow police chase in a Good Humor truck.” • Colin Cowherd of ESPN, on Twitter, about Alex Rodriguez playing in the minors on a rehab assignment two days prior to his anticipated suspension announcement: “ARod batting second, playing third and pleading the fifth in Trenton tonight.”

WASN’T THAT A PARTY ........... I don’t even know where to start with the thank yous for our centennial. There were so many hardworking dedicated people from the Youngstown and surrounding area that we decided not to name names for fear of leaving some individuals out. A huge thank you to everyone that came together and helped out in so many ways, from the cookie baking gals to the cleanup crews. Many of you wore more than one hat. I must say everyone worked toward a common goal and did it with a smile which in turn made it pleasurable for everyone. We are so proud of our small community. A special thank you goes to our generous sponsors without each and everyone of you our centennial would not of been such a great success. Also, thank you to our Centennial Committee for working so tirelessly for over 2 years. You were a great bunch to work with. Last but not least, a big thank you to everyone that attended our centennial celebration, it would not of been a success without you.
