Electronically tracked

Bauer explained how the birds are tracked to determine the

winner of a race. Each racing bird has an electronic band around its leg that is tracked by GPS. Every bird is registered prior to the race and its number entered into a computer program. When the birds are released at the start point of the race, the GPS coordinates are recorded. As each bird returns to its loft, an electronic device at the loft records the time the bird returned.

Ron Benjamin’s flock of racing pigeons circles above their loft ready to land after a morning exercise session. The Central Alberta Racing Pigeon Club member keeps a few hundred birds, some are racers, and some are breeding stock. The birds are trained to return home first from their home area, then from 50 miles away, and then in additional increments of 50 miles up to 250 miles for yearlings, and longer distances for mature birds. Can fly over 500 miles Cont’d from Pg 1 Birds can fly up to 50 miles an hour at a steady pace depending on weather conditions or hazards, like hawks preying on the pigeons. More mature flyers can fly 400 or 500 miles or longer in a single race while yearling birds generally train for shorter trips under 250 miles. When birds are released at the beginning of a race, they will often fly together, even ‘loft hopping’ or stopping at other lofts until they reach their own. The birds can live to 20 years of age but their racing years are the first seven or eight. Bauer allows his birds to hatch out chicks no more than once a year. They would set more often but that would result in too large a flock. Both male and female pigeons, who mate for life unless one of the pair dies, take turns sitting on the eggs. Bauer explained that pigeons are not at all as messy as their reputation indicates. The birds

and their loft are kept clean, while the birds are inoculated and fed a particular diet to keep them healthy.

Opinion

A study in contradictions Brenda Schimke

ECA Review

There is one thing that can be said for mankind, we’re a people of contradiction. Take for example the “looking young forever obsession”. We have all sorts of expensive products and procedures to keep our skin young forever, but every dermatologist, who is not making money off this multi-billion dollar business, say the same thing. If you want younger looking skin longer, don’t smoke, always wear sun screen, never use a tanning bed, get adequate sleep and, of course, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. Yet many use cigarettes to stay slim. Most first world Caucasians think a golden skin makes one look healthier. Far too many of us are so attached to gaming, smart phones and movies that the amount of sleep we’re receiving is far below what is healthy. And, last but not least, we are becoming a society of growing obesity because we don’t get enough exercise and fast foods dominate many of our diets.

We unknowingly or unwillingly ignore the contradictions we embrace when it comes to expecting much from government by paying little.

It’s not just skin beauty where we fall victim to contradiction, it’s found also in our obsession for lower taxes. For the last quarter century, we’ve been conditioned to believe taxes of any kind are evil, even to the point we now consider CPP contributions a tax rather than an investment towards our future retirement. EI as a tax rather than a premium for a benefit that kicks in when something totally outside our control happens—losing a job when oil prices tank. We want baby bonus cheques for kids all the way up to 16 years of age, home improvement rebates, OAS (Old Age Security) cheques and CPP cheques when we turn 65. We want “tough on crime” and increased security which comes with more police, more judges, more crown prosecutors, more jail space, more guards, more prisons, more military, more operational and capital spending on military, more veteran benefits, more spies, and the list goes on. We want to build our luxury homes on flood plains but then we want the government to bail us out when we’re flooded---sometimes over and over again. We want to be free-market farmers without border restrictions, able to negotiate the best prices for our crops, but when drought or flood conditions occur, we want the government to send us a bailout cheque. We want government help when BSE or avian or swine diseases attack our respective livestock herds. We want nursing homes, seniors’ homes and hospitals in small communities for the

R

economic spinoff and keep our seniors close to home. We want universal health care, home care, short wait times for surgeries and cancer treatments. If we have family or friends suffering from mental illness, dementia and all its forms, physical disabilities or an addiction, we want government supports. We want schools in small communities and smaller classes in larger communities. We want timely training and affordable postsecondary education. We even expect our “private” schools to get a portion of “public” money which is a complete contradiction. We want to do extreme sports or let our kids ride SUVs and then expect rescue teams, paramedics, emergency rooms, surgeries, ICUs and publically-funded hospital beds close at hand. We want to smoke, eat an unhealthy diet, maintain an unhealthy weight, not wear helmets or seatbeats, speed and generally increase our probability of being a long-term drag on the public health care system. We want community halls, skating arenas, curling rinks, seniors’ centers, libraries, swimming pools, recreation centers, ball diamonds, soccer pitches and football fields. We want well-maintained roads, graded in the summer, snow plowed in the winter and absent of pot holes. For those living in urban areas, we want sidewalks, sewers, treated water, garbage pickup and public transportation. We want safe drinking water, irrigation, clean rivers and lakes for fishing, water use and recreation. We want electricity and natural gas for our homes and although we think we’re paying a lot for utilities, if not for government assistance, we’d be paying much more. Now the vast majority of these are needs of an advanced society, and some are just pure wants or self-centeredness of a wealthy society. But in all cases, who would argue that 100 per cent of the populous are okay with government, ergo taxes, paying for 90 per cent of the above wants and needs. Therein lies the problem behind our lives of contradiction. The sure treatment for healthy skin is no smoking, sunning or tanning beds and lots of sleep, good food and exercise. Yet we prefer to spend billions of dollars on un-scientific anti-aging products, undergo cosmetic surgery, drink concoctions, inject ourselves with Botox or hope acupuncture will do the trick. We may think our politicians do a lot of double-speak but surely we, the voters are a major part of the problem. We unknowingly or unwillingly ignore the contradictions we embrace when it comes to expecting much from government by paying little. Ignorance is bliss, they say! Alas, we seem much happier complaining about high taxes than owning up to the truth that every day of each year, we all use government-funded infrastructure or access some benefit, information, service or government program that is available -- because of taxes!

Reflections, musings Cattle liner rollover near Castor Dear Editor, On a recent tour through your area with a group from A.L.L.(Alberta Life-wide Living) Writing Centre, I took the opportunity to write about some of my reflections and musings regarding the area. I want

On Thursday, August 13, 2015, at 6:36 pm, Coronation RCMP were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover involving a cattle trailer on Highway 36, approximately eight kilometres south of Castor, Ab. Fire crews from Castor and Coronation were also dispatched to the scene and

remained well into the night to clear the vehicle and debris. The driver of the semi was evaluated by EMS and was released on scene with minor injuries. Many of the 46 cattle died as a result of the collision and two were euthanized by police. The cause of the collision is under investigation, however

driver error is believed to be a contributing factor.

Improvement in Bashaw health services Equipment For Sale • Case IH Combine Axial Flow 1680

Lisa Joy

ECA Review Reporter The Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN), which brings patient centred care to residents is working in Bashaw. “We are on the right track in Bashaw,” Stacey Strilchuk Executive Director, told Bashaw council at its Aug. 13 meeting. “It took us a bit of time.” Last fall the PCN was searching for a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to work alongside the doctor in the Bashaw Health Centre and focusing on screening for medical issues. An LPN has since been hired, which enables the PCN to bring a team-based approach to care to patients. “The doctor and LPN are stream lining (services), said Strilchuk. The PCN, which started in 2005, utilizes health care in a team approach co-ordinating with doctors, pharmcists, nurses, dietitians and sometimes social workers and mental health liaisons. The PCN, which works with 36 family doctors and 25 health care providers in six clinics and four

hospitals/health care facilities, is an extension of doctor services in Bashaw, Camrose, Daysland, Forestburg, Hardisty, Killam and Tofield. The PCN helps bring health services to patients who may not be able to travel. Medical records will become electronic and patients can meet with health team members and social workers via Skype if the individual isn’t able to drive to a larger centre and don’t want to move from Bashaw. “What a wonderful asset for our town,” said Mayor Penny Shantz. “It’s an excellent program.” Likewise, Coun. Rosella Peterman agreed, saying, ”It sounds really good.” Bashaw Chief Administrative Officer Theresa Fuller said the PCN is “very necessary and a big necessity” for Bashaw, adding that she sees it appeal for seniors.

Concern over conflict of interest

The Hanna Rock & Roll Reunion 2015 Aug. 14 - 15 wrapped up Saturday evening at the Hanna Community Centre with the Hanna bands returning to perform including Hitek, Fascinations, Odium Reproach, Fox Lake Blues Band and Prairie Grass Disaster along with Go Go Dancers, Nadine Hein, Robin and Sarah Warwick and Katie Campbell. Mark Fecho opened up the show singing the original song of the Rock & Roll Reunion, ‘Hanna Saturday Night’, to the approximate 400 attendees. ECA Review/J. Webster

Roadway partially blocked Cont’d from Pg 5 A northbound semi hauling a load of fertilizer left the roadway and entered the east ditch, with the trailer partially blocking the roadway. Fire and towing crews worked for several hours to clear the roadway, resulting in a laneway closure until the vehicle, trailers, and debris could be cleared. Environmental and Sustainable Resource Development also attended the scene due to phosphorus fertilizer spilling from the trailer. The driver of the semi was transported by EMS to hospital where he was treated for non life threatening injuries. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

Alcohol a factor in fatal January collision

Police have confirmed that alcohol consumption was a factor in a single vehicle rollover that resulted in the death of a 19 year-old man from the Castor area in January. On Jan. 19, 2015, a pickup truck rolled near Castor on Highway 12. The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle died on scene. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was found to have had a blood alcohol concentration of over twice the legal limit. Coronation RCMP would like to take this opportunity to remind citizens to always buckle up when driving, and also to find alternate transportation after drinking. Fatal impaired driving collisions are preventable - do your part and arrive alive.

New provider for animal services

Old MacDonald Kennels of Ponoka will take over animal control services for the county after Alberta Animal Services of Red Deer terminated the existing contract, citing the contract was not cost effective. Peace Officer John Bishop reviewed the costs and policies for animal services from both companies. Alberta Animal Services was offering a new contract for call outs at a cost of a minimum three hours charged at $100 per hour rather than the previous ‘special rate’ of $100 per hour. Old MacDonald offered $85 per hour charged to actual hours. Old MacDonald operates as an animal rescue facility with the objective being adoptions where possible over euthanasia.

Mission project close to home

by Pastor Gloria Swain The Strome Community Church held their annual week long Vacation Bible School July 13 - 17 for children ages six to 12. One of the projects for the week was doing a village clean up on Thursday instead of the usual sports activities. Their efforts were rewarded by the village office with a beautiful Strome bag which constrained a can of pop and a bag of cheesies. This year the children’s mission project for the week was the Axelsen family. The children wanted to help support

Mrs. Axelsen and her two boys of Stettler, following the recent loss of their father, Colin along with their 10 month old daughter, Madeline. Some of the children who attend Daysland School knew of Colin through the coaching sports teams when he was teaching in Pigeon Lake. The children along with the guests who attended our barbeque on the last day were able to raise approximately $450 to help support the Axelson family. We find our children love to be involved in community projects where they are helping others.

Debt now advancing further

Cont’d from Pg 4 There hasn’t been a shortage of government money in Alberta. Instead, there’s been an absolute deluge of government spending and waste. Successive Alberta governments have been fiscal failures, and the new Premier, Rachel Notley, isn’t even trying to balance the budget. Instead, she hiked spending and is piling on debt. This summer, the NDP used its majority to give themselves a brand new $6 billion credit card. That card will be maxed out before the end of this fiscal year, when they’ll be looking for even more credit and debt. This isn’t emergency money, or borrowing for a one-time crisis. This is cash for day-today incidentals and operations—like a

normal person borrowing loonies on a daily basis just to head over to Tim’s for coffee and a doughnut. Many analysts say that Notley’s level of spending and borrowing could easily bring Alberta debt to between $40-$50 billion by 2019 or 2020. Simply put, Alberta needs to get its fiscal house in order. All responsible parents and grandparents want their kids to have more opportunities than they had. The notion of bequeathing a legacy of personal debt to their loved ones would be abhorrent to them. Yet this is exactly the situation that successive Alberta governments have created, and that the NDP government is now further advancing.

Customer Satisfaction is our business

A letter will be sent from the Town of Castor to TransCanada detailing their support for the development of the Energy East Pipeline town council decided at their regular meeting on Aug. 10. The Energy East Pipeline, being developed by TransCanada, is a 4,600 km batch crude oil pipeline that will carry 1.1-million barrels of crude oil per day from Alberta and Saskatchewan to refineries in Eastern Canada. The exact route is still unclear for the pipeline and will only be determined after a public and regulatory review but the planned starting point is a new tank terminal in Hardisty, Ab. According the company’s website website currently, the project has the following major components: - Converting an existing natural gas pipeline to an oil transportation pipeline. - Constructing new pipelines in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Eastern Ontario, Québec and New Brunswick to link up with the converted pipe. - Constructing the associated facilities, pump stations and tank terminals required to move crude oil from Alberta to Québec and New Brunswick, including marine facilities that enable

Castor’s Small Communities Fund grant was approved which will see the town receiving $1,315,100 from each of the Provincial and the Federal Governments. The Town of Castor will also have to provide that amount over a four year period.

How to react when grades drop?

Stay calm

Remaining calm and taking a step back is essential when parents realize that children’s grades are dropping. After all, a report card is nothing more than a tool that provides information about your children’s strengths and areas that need work. Of course, you can’t just ignore poor grades, but you must try to emphasize the good results and congratulate your child for them.

Prevent panicking during exams

If you’re a bit phobic about exams, there are two things you shouldn’t overlook: good studying techniques and excellent mental preparation. 1. Be very disciplined about studying for your exam on a daily basis, and be sure to have a course outline you can refer to. This will save you from having to do lots of last minute cramming, which can be really discouraging. 2. When prepping for an exam, be creative and invent original or humorous memorizing tricks. They will save you a lot of study time and will leave the material etched in your memory for years to come. 3. During the exam, adopt a positive attitude. It’s really surprising how beneficial this approach can be for relaxing as well as for concentrating. 4. Give yourself time to read all the questions. A good understanding of them is
