Port Credit Walking Tour Summer has finally arrived in the villages! This time of year really brings out the best of village living—from the farmer’s market, to sidewalk sales, festivals and events. It is no wonder that Port Credit and Streetsville are two of Mississauga’s most popular hot spots. They offer a small town feel, within a big city. “Port Credit truly is a diamond in the rough. It is a gem, gleaming on the water’s edge, and a bubble that strikes a balance between the proximity of city living and the charm of a small community. I wake up every day with a smile on my face.” - Jay Springthorpe, Port Credit resident Along the main street strip you can discover all the amenities and services imaginable within walking distance. From the picturesque Waterfront Trail in Port Credit, to Streetsville’s Culham Trail, there is an outdoor oasis at your doorstep. Why leave the comfort of your own neighbourhood when some of the city’s most stunning attractions and finest restaurants are only a hop, skip and a jump away? Walkable Communities Walk Score rates neighbourhoods across Canada and the United States to help people find walkable areas to live. Neighbourhoods are rated on a scale from 1-100, with a walker’s paradise at the top, all the way down to car-dependent. Communities are scored based on their walkability and proximity to nearby amenities. According to Walk Score, the city of Mississauga is ranked the fourth most walkable city in Canada. Within the big city, the village of Streetsville and Port Credit are highly walkable neighbourhoods, meaning that running Continued on page 9

Family Run Business Celebrates 85 Years! By Deanne Clipperton

If you had told Wix Norman Atkinson that his fender bender in the fall of 1929 would result in a business that has lasted 85 years and has involved four generations of his family, I don’t think he would have believed you. But believe it or not that was the beginning of WN Atkinson Insurance. After the minor accident, Wix paid for the repairs to the other car and felt that he should have some type of insurance. He saw an ad for an insurance company on the side of a streetcar and approached them for insurance on his car. They in turn asked him if he would be interested in representing the company in the Streetsville area and as they say the rest is history.

who began to work in the office, continued to grow the business and bring it into the computer age. In 1997 the fourth generation of the family joined the team Don, Jon and Marie’s son and Wix’s great grandson started in the business and in 2003 Jon and Marie’s son-in law Todd Smith also joined the team. In 2004 after 40 years in the insurance industry Jon retired. Don, Marie and Todd are carrying on the business along with their dedicated staff as the business continues to grow.

With the help of his wife Ena, who married Wix after her first husband Captain William Clipperton was killed in WW1, Wix began to operate the insurance business part- time in his farm house near Winston Churchill along with their full time farm. They sold the farm in 1943 and moved into Ena’s (nee Graydon) family home on Thomas Street, with the office now located in the back kitchen of the house. The new office space provided a more central location along with convenient parking for potential clients. With this came an increase in business and selling insurance now became a full time job for Wix. In 1952 Wix and Ena traded homes with their son Graydon Clipperton and his family and relocated the insurance agency to Maiden Lane where they were better able to accommodate the expanding business. Ena continued to assist with the business until she passed away in 1961. During this time Graydon and Doris assisted with the business part time especially when Wix wintered in Florida. In 1964 and 1970 two of Wix’s grandsons Jon and Michael joined the business.

This year WN Atkinson Insurance celebrates 85 years of providing knowledgeable insurance protection in Streetsville and the surrounding communities and would like to thank its clients for their continued patronage over the last 85 years. Don, Marie, Todd and their staff would like to invite their clients to visit the office on Saturday morning June 7 from 9 am-12 pm to meet and greet with the staff and to pick up their complimentary bag of fresh home-made Kettle Corn to enjoy during the Bread and Honey Festival Parade.

WN Atkinson Insurance purchased and moved into its present location in 1972. This move marked the first time that Wix’s home and business were not in the same building. Wix continued to be actively involved in the insurance agency until he was forced to retire due to illness in 1976. Wix’s grandson Jon took over the day to day operations of the business and eventually took over the business when his brother Michael went back to school in 1983. Jon and his wife Marie,

While the location of the office and the companies they represent have changed names and hands since 1929 the core commitment of this family run business remains the same “to provide exceptional service and protection to their clients and the community today and into the future.” WN Atkinson Insurance - Proud of our history, focused on today and planning for the future.

WNA would like to invite clients to join them in celebrating 85 years on June 7 from 9am-12, come and enjoy your complimentary bag of Kettle Corn .

She is accustomed to the conveniences that come from living in the downtown core. Daniella states, “Living in Streetsville is an amazing place to be. The best thing about Streetsville is that all of your local businesses are within walking distance and you create friendships with the owners and managers of the local businesses. In a small town like Streetsville you feel like a part of a large family, not just another customer. The convenience is amazing. There is everything from small pubs to fine dining restaurants and barber shops to elegant decor shops.” For your social outings and casual or fine dining experiences, check out some of the fabulous pubs, bars, restaurants, coffee houses and bakeries in the vicinity. Streetsville Village Square Update: The Wait is Nearly Over!

Parks and Trails The Village of Port Credit and Streetsville are renowned for their scenic parks and trails along the waterfront. These extensive trails offer the perfect opportunity to get active and enjoy the beauty of nature. The Waterfront Trail in Port Credit and Culham Trail in Streetsville draws hundreds of walkers, joggers and cyclists daily. These trails are the perfect route for anyone looking to get some exercise and experience the beautiful wilderness the villages offer.

The new Streetsville Village Square is scheduled for completion by mid-July. Main Street square is undergoing major redevelopments in order to improve the quality and functionality of the space. In the meantime, Main Street road has been temporary closed. During the period of construction, don’t forget to visit your favourite shops along Main Street!

By: Lindsay Howe

Main Street Open for Business While the construction is taking place, all businesses will remain open. Your favourite shops and services will be fully open, and you will be able to access these businesses through their storefront. The following is a list of Streetsville Main Street Square Businesses:

Sarah O’Neill lives in Port Credit, and works in Streetsville. She takes advantage of any opportunity to venture out to the scenic trails, parks and woodlands to appreciate the natural environment surrounding her. Sarah explains, “Port Credit has the tendency to draw you outside of your home. I love visiting one of the countless parks nearby. Just last week my family and I went for a picnic at Richards Memorial Park on the beach, it was beautiful!”

Port Credit and Streetsville are home to the most breathtakingly beautiful parks and trails in the city. Take the time to breathe in the fresh air, absorb the scenery and venture along the breathtaking Waterfront Trail or Culham Trail. Commuters Paradise When heading across town, or out of town, the villages offer city transit and Go Bus options to get you where you are going. The Port Credit and Streetsville Go Station are conveniently located in the heart of both villages, making commutes bearable, and allowing residents to live a “car-lite lifestyle”. Commuters do not have to battle the stress of daily traffic. Instead, they can enjoy reading a book or magazines, or catch up on their emails and work. Most of the residents living in the downtown core of the villages can make it to the train station from their homes in less than five minutes.

The square will be updated and expanded which will enable larger festivals and celebrations to take place in Streetsville. The outdoor space promises to be green, comfortable, and pedestrian friendly. The square will feature a main stage covered by a canopy, more trees and flowers will be added, to increase the natural ambiance of the square and make it more of a green space. Streetsville Village Square will be the perfect setting for movie nights, outdoor concerts, weekend markets, and much more.

Village BIAs Dedication to their Community The Port Credit and Streetsville Business Improvement Areas (BIA) take on many projects and initiatives to keep the streets and parks beautified and clean for residents, businesses and visitors. In addition to upgrades and maintenance, the village BIA works all year round to upgrade and maintain the streetscapes. The BIA does everything from planting shrubs and flowers, to adding new streetlamps, signs and decorative banners.

A little patience and understanding will go a long way. When the new Village Square is unveiled in just over a month, the road closures and ongoing construction will be a distant memory. While Main Street is temporary closed, pedestrians will have access to the area at all times. The on-street parking has been removed on Main Street; however there is plenty of parking available for customer parking. Additional street parking can be found along Church Street (from Main Street to Kerr Street).

The BIAs’ efforts are centered on improving the livelihood of the village and supporting local businesses and residents. The BIA is responsible for our village events and festivals, taking care of planning, marketing, and promotion. These festivals and events are some of the most popular and celebrated events in Mississauga, bringing people from across the city and the GTA to Port Credit and Streetsville, thereby boosting the village’s profile.

The Streetsville BIA appreciates your support and patience during this period of reconstruction. For more information visit www.villageofstreetsville. com. You can contact the Streetsville BIA by phone at (905) 858-5974 or email info@villageofstreetsville.com.

To keep Ward 11 clean and green, Councillor George Carlson hosted his 3rd annual Village Litter Blitz on Sunday, May 4th. Councillor Carlson, MP Brad Butt, MPP Bob Delaney, Streetsville residents and many service groups; Streetsville B.I.A., Streetsville Cadets, Streetsville Rotary, Streetsville Lions Club, The Scouts, and others helped clean up litter in downtown Streetsville. JDRF skate at the Vic

Two families from Kendellhurst Academy in Streetsville came together to raise money with a fun skate that was held at the VJCC for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). Family, friends and classmates of Anni & Ross (two Kendellhurst students living with Type 1 diabetes) came together to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. With the communities support, they raised money and awareness. The JDRF Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes is on June 8th at Lakeside Park. Special thanks to Second Cup in Streetsville and Fit For Life in Streetsville for helping make the event successful.

Inspiration at Camp Enterprise

Students from across the city converged on the University of Toronto – Mississauga Campus for a unique business workshop during Camp Enterprise 2014, which was held from May 7-10. Organized by The Rotary Clubs of Mississauga, the four-day workshop taught high school students in Grade 11 and 12 important leadership and business skills, and included keynote speeches by inspirational speakers, panel discussions, workshops, creativity sessions, business games, presentations and an introduction to the professions and career opportunities facing young people.

National Day of Honour in Canada

On Friday, May 9, 2014, Canada’s National Day of Honour was an historic event hosted by the Streetsville Legion. Canadians across the country were invited to take part in the National Day of Honour. The Government of Canada set aside the day to mark the end of our country’s military mission in Afghanistan. Canadians honoured the legacy of these heroes with a national moment of silence. “Canada has made an important contribution to the world through our mission in Afghanistan. Now that this has come to an end and our brave veterans have returned home, we believe that all Canadian’s should take the time to recognize their sacrifice and service to our country and the world” said MP Brad Butt. “I would like to thank the Streetsville Legion for organizing and providing a way that our community, myself included, can show our appreciation” continued MP Butt.

Camp Enterprise has provided high school students with unique experiences in teambuilding, leadership, business principles and dealing with the challenges of life and business. The objective of Camp Enterprise is to explore, expose, challenge and awaken interest and imagination on the whole concept of business and private enterprise. The ‘Leaders of Tomorrow’ were selected from Mississauga-area high schools because of their leadership skills and activity in various school committees and activities. For many of the students, the camp was their first chance to network with students who had similar career goals, and gain first-hand knowledge from speakers who operated their own business. Port Credit High School student Walt Wachon who attended the camp, said “It is a great experience and I learned that initial failure is not a bad thing.” For more information, visit www. mississaugacampenterprise.ca.

COMMUNITY CORNER | PORT CREDIT “Shipwrecked on a Great Lake” recreates the invasion on Toronto and the sinking of famous Ontario shipwrecks “Hamilton” and “Scourge”

New Mural at the Small Arms Building

Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey hosted an unveiling ceremony on Saturday, May 10th at 1352 Lakeshore Road East (Small Arms Building) for the ‘A Century of Heroism’ murals to commemorate the 100 year mark since World War I. The murals were designed by Alexandra Kaske a student at Peel Alternative School (PAS) South. Alexandra worked with Parks and Forestry Staff, Anna Ferguson to have these murals painted by seniors from the Mississauga Senior’s Centre, Summer Camp participants at Carmen Corbasson and students from the PAS South in Ward 1 Mississauga. The Long Branch Aerodrome and the Long Branch Outdoor Rifle Range which were both located in Mississauga, were the inspiration behind the murals. MP Stella Ambler joined in the unveiling ceremony.

In 1843, Canadian seaman Ned Myers told the story of his life to the famous American writer James Fenimore Cooper. In Cooper’s book, Myers told the story of the 1813 US amphibious attack on Toronto, and the subsequent sinking of the ship he sailed on during the attack. Myers was one of the few survivors of the sinking; the bones of the many other sailors who sank with the ships sat untouched on the bottom of Lake Ontario for 167 years. Now, 201 years after the sinking, “Shipwrecked on a Great Lake” tells the full story of the attack, the sinking, and the discovery and exploration of the deep shipwrecks. The film, from Director Peter Rowe, will premiere on Saturday, June 14 at 7 PM on the main stage of the Mississauga Waterfront Festival.

The Long Branch Aerodrome was Canada’s first airfield and was the location for the Curtiss Flying School. The school opened in 1915 and served as a pilot training school for the war. The Rifle Range however, has an older history as its military usage extends back to 1891. In 1910, the Department of National Defense acquired the property and built wooden baffles which are still on the property today.

“Shipwrecked on a Great Lake” was produced by Pinewood Films Inc for the Port Credit Village Project, and was supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the City of Mississauga, the City of Hamilton, Hamilton and Scourge Project, the Port Credit Community Foundation, the Port Credit BIA, the Hazel McCallion Foundation, the Mississauga Waterfront Festival, and Laser-Quantum Water Screens.

Honouring Acts of Selflessness and Generosity in the Community By: Lindsay Howe

Two Young Girls Make Contribution to Angel Hair for Kids The story of how Streetsville residents Emma Goobie (6 years old) and her sister Amy (4 years old) generously donated their long locks for cancer is both moving and inspiring. Their selfless donation will be used to make a quality wig for a financially disadvantaged child living with cancer. The story begins over the holidays last year when Emma and Amy saw a commercial advertisement for Sick Kids, showing children going through cancer treatments. Emma, a Grade One student at Vista Heights was curious to know why these children were without hair. Her mother, Shobha Goobie explained what cancer was and the effects of radiation, which resulted in the loss of hair. Over the next few weeks, Emma continued to inquire about cancer, feeling empathy for children undergoing this struggle. Emma was inspired to donate her hair to a child experiencing cancer treatments when her mother told her about the Angel Hair for Kids program. She decided on her own volition to commit to the cause, and soon after little Amy resolved that she wanted to donate her hair, like her big sister. The girls had their hair cut at Dolly Mixtures and afterwards they personally hand delivered their donation to Capilia Truly You. The helpful management and staff showed the wigs to the Goobie girls and explained how they are made. The women at Capilia Truly You were delighted to meet Emma and Amy, and thanked the girls for their kind and compassionate act.Emma is quite happy with her new shorter hairdo because she finds it easier to maintain; she no longer has to comb long, tangled hair. Amy on the other hand was initially sad to say goodbye to her long locks, but the hairstyle is starting to grow on her. The girls are very proud of themselves for making this contribution. Emma still talks about the experience, and her desire to grow her hair out and donate her hair once more! About Angel Hair for Kids A Child’s Voice Foundation’s Angel Hair for Kids program provides wigs and hair loss solutions to children in Canada who have lost their hair as a result of medical conditions or treatment. Hair donations are used to create the wigs and are given to a child at no cost. It takes 10-12 donated ponytails to make one hair prosthesis. A Child’s Voice Foundation budgets $800 to $1000 in order to cover manufacturing and related costs. The wigs and hair loss solutions provided help to increase a child’s self-esteem and promote a positive self-image during this period of difficulty in their lives. The aim of the foundation is to help these children face their condition and daily life with greater confidence. This story of Emma and Amy will hopefully inspire other families to donate their hair or raise funds for the cause. Donating your hair is a meaningful way to support someone on a cancer journey. For more information on how you can get involved visit www.cancer.ca or www.acvf.ca.

The Monster Rock Orchestra

By: Lindsay Howe

The Monster Rock Orchestra (MRO) won the People’s Choice Award at the 2014 MARTYs, beating out 122 other nominees across all categories. The MRO was picked by the people of Mississauga out of a diverse pool of artistic talent.

Buskerfest returns to Port Credit Friday, August 15th through to the 17th. This awe-inspiring and fun-filled festival features an array of talented daredevils performing magnificent stunts. From fire shows, to street theatre, Buskerfest has entertaining acts that will keep audiences enthralled and amazed.

“The idea with the MRO was to do something that had never been done before,” says Vikas Kohli, Artistic Director of the MRO. “We are so glad it has proven to be such a success and are honoured to win the People’s Choice Award.”

Buskerfest features talent from across the globe including: Austria, Germany, Japan, UK and Australia. There are lots of new acts to experience, along with a few of your old favorites. Some of the exciting performances to see this year include: spectacular fire performances, aerial acts, break-dancing, stilt walking, acrobatics, and juggling. Among the talented buskers you will experience amazing magicians, escape artists, mimes, comedians and cartoonists.

This innovative, world-class musical experience combines a laser show with a family-friendly rock concert, with a set list featuring both classic and modern hits, from rock to Top 40. This exciting win for the MRO cements it as one of the most unique and cutting-edge musical productions to hit the arts scene to date. The 2014 MARTY Awards, presented by the Mississauga Arts Council, were held on Thursday, May 8 at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga, showcasing the best of the city’s art scene for the 20th year in a row.

Buskerfest’s Saturday night showcase will have an East Coast / West Coast theme, featuring the infamous Flying Tortillas from the West coast, and Wacky Chad from the East Coast. Local musician Jeff Niderman will be performing throughout the showcase. Port Credit’s Buskerfest favourite is the world renowned Flame Oz featuring a group of 5 Australian performers. You also don’t want to miss out on a spectacular fire act that has never been seen before in Canada!

With the MARTYs going bigger than ever this year, the MRO won the People’s Choice Award by a landslide. Over 7,500 people voted for their favourite act through the Mississauga Arts Council’s website.

Buskerfest’s Xtreme Finale takes place on Sunday, August 17th. All of the performers team up for one big show. Buskers will be performing devilish acts to showcase their sheer talent and leave their audiences in awe.

The Monster Rock Orchestra will be returning on June 13 and 14 as the signature entertainment act of the Mississauga Waterfront Festival. Now in its third year, this year’s show incorporates bigger screen effects and even more lasers than before. Reaching an audience of 45,000 people each year, the MRO puts on a show as wild and electric as its name suggests.

Among the phenomenally talented entertainers at Buskerfest, many have performed in Cirque du Soleil. These performers have since moved on, going back to their roots and performing on the streets and giving back to the people. Buskerfest entertainers are travelers of the world, and make a living from it.

Ask Marsha Marsha Schofield, B.A. Gerontology - Business Development Manager- East & Central Mississauga. www.comfortkeepers.ca Dear Marsha, Recently, my friend told me that one of your caregivers is assisting her mother every Wednesday for three hours. This has got me thinking about assistance for my own mother on a weekly basis too? “Mama,” raised 6 children, but has never really socialized much with others outside of family members, neighbors or ladies from our parish. She loves to cook traditional Italian food and package it up for me, my siblings and our families. Lately, she has been complaining that her arthritis is causing her pain and it is difficult for her to do the things she likes. How can your caregivers help our mother continue with the tasks that she loves to do with little interference? Theresa F. Dear Theresa, Comfort Keepers can certainly satisfy your mother’s needs by offering what we call “Interactive Caregiving.” This is our client centered approach that helps seniors or older adults like your mother to transform routine tasks into opportunities. Instead of “doing for” the client we provide care by “doing with the client,” engaging their participation at their level of physical and cognitive function. What this means for your mother is that if she enjoys cooking but, has difficulty chopping vegetables and kneading dough, one of our caregivers can do it for her. More importantly, your mother’s input as to what is required to prepare the recipe and how it should be done are the key ingredients in this process. Our caregivers will do their best to ensure personalized and thoughtful attention while meeting your mother’s needs, so those wonderful and familiar dishes will not be lost. Marsha Schofield Dear Marsha, My 78 year old Aunt lives in Mississauga and once a week on my day off I travel from my home in Burlington to take her shopping. “Aunt B” spends the entire week scouring newspapers for coupons which means that I have to take her to at least 3 different stores and waste four to five hours of my time so she may get the best deal on something. Every time I go out with her lately I no longer feel like I am doing a good deed. Instead, I feel like she is wasting and abusing my valuable and irreplaceable time. Is there a way that Comfort Keepers can help us both out and reduce my conflicting feelings of anger and guilt? Kevin from Burlington Dear Kevin, One of the differences between how older folks think and those who are younger, are in the “concept of the passage of time.” Since both of you are at different stages of your lives; your goals, obligations, responsibilities and desires about how time is spent is very different. Unfortunately Kevin, you are now faced with the choice of continuing this task as a companion escort or declaring your need to spend this time on other personal matters; suggesting to your Aunt that Comfort Keepers help out. Gently let her know that it is no longer possible for you to continually help with this task alone. Tell her that you would like to investigate the possibility of having a caregiver assist at least every other week for just a few hours, to help keep the costs at a minimum. “Comfort Keepers” additional support may just be what both of you need? Your Aunt will gain a new friend plus, the anger and guilt that you feel towards this outing may be minimized. Holly’s Tips: De-cluttering your home Are your closets crowded, drawers jumbled, shelves overflowing? If the car won’t fit in the garage and you’ve been thinking about adding a shed in the backyard for storage space, here are some tips and ideas to help de-clutter your home! Keep in mind, de-cluttering isn’t about perfection; it’s about clearing up areas in your home that inhibit proper functioning; areas that make you feel bad when you look at them or areas that simply don’t work! Remember to start with whatever irritates you the most; organizing the most annoying clutter zone will be motivating! Do one job at a time. It’s easy to get pulled from one clutter zone to another and the first area you tackle will be the most difficult. Stay focused on the one area until you’ve completed it. Set time limits for de-cluttering and start small. Initially work in one hour bouts, even if this means you’ll need two or three or even more sessions to complete an area (like the kitchen, garage or entrance closet).

Sort as you go. Use four plastic laundry hampers (they’re easy to carry and see into and best of all, they are reusable). Label them; keep in this room, store elsewhere, garage sale and not sure. Organize what you plan to deep in this area/room and distribute the rest into the area or rooms where they should be. Choose an area in the basement or garage to store your garage sale items. Let no box go unmarked. Use masking tape, label maker or permanent marker to label any box of items to be stored. Get everyone in your household on the de-cluttering bandwagon! Make a ten minute pick up on the way to bed, part of everyone’s daily routine.

Assign each person in your family a room or area that they are responsible for keeping clutter-free and organized. Establish a specific place for the things you use every day; hooks for keys and backpacks, a basket for mail, etc. Shallow plastic containers under beds are ideal for storing seasonal items and sports gear. Put hooks on the backs or doors, closets, cupboards and cabinet doors. Assign a box or bowl for each member of your household to store the things that come out of their pockets! De-cluttering is about establishing new habits and attitudes. Remember a little time continually spent on de-cluttering will keep your home clutter-free!

SLIP! SLOP! SLAP! By Silvia Yeomans, Queen Spectacle

Did you know that Australia has some of the highest UV levels in the world and has one of the highest rates of skin cancer? 2 in 3 Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they turn 70! For those reasons, there’s an amazing campaign that they have for sun protection that we could embrace and remember to use with our own children. They call it, SLIP! SLOP! SLAP! SLIP! On clothing SLOP! On sunscreen SLAP! On a hat And they’ve added, SEEK! Shade and SLIDE! On sunglasses SLIP! One of the best ways to protect your family from the sun is to cover up and shield skin from UV rays. One way to ensure that clothes will shield harmful UV rays, place your hand inside the garments and make sure you can’t see it through them. SLOP! Lots of good sunscreens are available for kids; for sensitive skin, brands with fun scents, long-lasting waterproof and sweat-proof versions, and easyapplication varieties in spray bottles. What matters most in a sunscreen are the degree of protection from UV rays it provides and the compliance of the application? SLOP on the sunscreen whenever kids will be in the sun. SLOP on the sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before kids go outside so there’s a good layer of protection. Remember their lips, hands, ears, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck. Lift up bathing suit straps and apply sunscreen underneath them (in case the straps shift as they move). Reapply sunscreen often, approximately every 2 hours and after a child has been sweating or swimming. SLAP on a hat. Hats with broader brims and bucket shape give you more shade and protect your face, ears, neck and head. SEEK shade. The shade from a hat will protect your face, but a wide umbrella or canopy will give you added UV protection and is great for a cool and comfortable space to play and rest. SLIDE on sunglasses. Use protective eyewear for children. Sun exposure damages the eyes as well as the skin. Even 1 day in the sun can result in a burned cornea (the outermost, clear membrane layer of the eye). Prolonged exposure can lead to cataracts (clouding of the eye lens, which leads to blurred vision) later in life. The best way to protect eyes is to wear sunglasses. Not all sunglasses provide the same level of ultraviolet protection. Some darkened plastic lenses are made without special UV filters and just trick the eyes into a false sense of safety. Purchase sunglasses with labels ensuring that they provide 100% UV protection. Some children don’t enjoy wearing sunglasses, especially the first few times. To encourage them to wear sunglasses, put yours on. If you’re wearing them, they will be more likely to wear theirs too. Providing sunglasses early in childhood will encourage the habit of wearing them in the future. SLIP! SLOP! SLAP! SEEK! SLIDE! If you remember what the Aussies are doing, it’ll make your summer more enjoyable and you will teach your children sun safety. Sometimes the things you learn are as a result of other’s misfortune. This was an article encouraged by my Johnson & Johnson sales representative for the ACUVUE brand contact lenses. Acuvue contact lenses are the only brand of contact lenses that have UVA and UVB protection. She knows I’m passionate about UV protection, as is she. Hopefully you will be too! The Top 3 Landscaping Trends

Thinking of Selling Your Home? Your Curb Appeal or that Amazing Backyard could net you more Money in Your Pocket. 1. Livable Outdoor Spaces Many homeowners are treating their patios and backyards as another room of the house. By adding outdoor kitchens with pizza ovens and using decorative planters and garden art, you can put your unique stamp on the space. How can you make your space more livable?

3. Gardening for Wellness It’s no secret that whole foods are the key to good health. Many people have turned to their own yards to grow the fruits and vegetables required for good nutrition. Not only are you able to see the fruits of your labor grow and flourish, but gardening can also burn up to 400 calories an hour. So get outdoors and get growing. Preparing your soil is the key to yields of healthy plants. To check if your soil is healthy, dig a hole and look for earthworms. The more worms you see, the healthier your soil is. Or, send a sample to a lab for a complete analysis of the nutrients in your soil. Plant what you love. Make a list of the fruits and vegetables that you love, before you shop for seedlings. This will help to ensure that most of what you grow is consumed. Some popular plants to start with include pole beans, squash, tomatoes, peppers, salad greens, collards, herbs and strawberries.

Add a deck or patio. Great for entertaining or for lounging during your free time, a deck or patio is a must-have feature. If natural stone or brick patio pavers are out of your budget, concrete pavers are a budget-friendly alternative. Enhance your lighting. Set the mood and enjoy your patio into the evening with the right lighting. LED and solar are becoming increasingly popular. Use strings of lights, torches or LED glass pavers that can be incorporated into the hardscape. Also don’t forget about your comfort. Homeowners are turning their patios into outdoor living rooms. Out with the plastic patio furniture; in with over-sized sofas, armchairs and tables made for the outdoors.

For all local condo owners, No yard, No problem! If you don’t have the yard to grow a garden, grow what you love in containers instead. Find a sunny spot on your deck or patio, and arrange your portable garden for optimal light.

2. Low Maintenance Landscapes Water conservation efforts in many areas of the country are prompting homeowners to make their landscapes drought- tolerant. One of the benefits of these landscapes is that they are lower in maintenance.

Green grass, plants and flowers in your front yard welcome a potential buyer when they visit your home. They can be wowed by that great first impression. If they proceed through a clean, neat and tidy interior and then finish with a backyard visit that has cozy patio and comfy chairs, it is more than likely you will have a buyer ready to present an offer on your home.

Native plants that are typically found in your area will have adapted to soil, water and local weather conditions. It is easier to care for them and, if perennials, you can enjoy them year after year.

If your are thinking of selling your home or condo this summer call me over to offer tips for adding more green to your space whether it be a condo balcony, or a front or backyard. Consultations are always complimentary.

Practice xeriscaping - this is ideal for areas that don’t naturally get a lot of water, xeriscaping utilizes low-water-use plants, native grasses, mulch and other elements to create a low-water, low maintenance landscape. In areas where grass just will not grow, try installing artificial turf. It looks like grass but requires less maintenance and water.

With spring in my step By Ric Cooper, Ric’s Recollection

Finally spring has sprung after what seemed the longest and one of the worst winters in recent memory.

I’ll offer a few final words of advice to both the seller and collector. Sellers, if you have really clean records from the 60’s forward, make an effort to get to the store for your best value. Buyers, collect what you like and be nice to the seller. After all, it is part of their (DNA) life history and something that meant a lot to them.

That long winter did have one benefit as far as vinyl enthusiasts were concerned; more time to sit and enjoy a full album of music! Spring and summer tend to be a time when people spend less time indoors listening to music. The tunes tend to be background music while you’re sitting on the deck enjoying the weather and your favourite beverage. Another spring past time is the plethora of garage sales and outdoor flea markets. For a record collector, these sales can be a goldmine but usually they’re just a waste of time. You’ll be lucky to get a few playable records out of the hundreds that you have to go through. Moldy, scratched records are the norm. So are the Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, Don Ho and countless others that fill the boxes (no offence to the fans of these artists!). Finding an original pressing of most 60’s rock bands in near mint condition is almost impossible. I find it strange that when someone does have some “gems” that they haven’t tried bringing them to the store to get a fair payment instead of the $1 each usually paid at these sales. I have paid $600 for a single record for re-sale. Granted it was “super rare” and in fantastic condition but these rarities are out there! Quite often I get phone calls regarding evaluating collections or people just wondering “how much is my record worth?” Unfortunately, I don’t have time to do evaluations, and not to sound crass, but what’s in it for me? If you think you do have some REALLY GOOD CONDITION rock, blues or small combo jazz records then give me a call to set up an appointment to bring them into the store. I can guarantee that I won’t offer just a buck a piece! I’m not guaranteeing that you’ll get rich but ...who knows!

Enjoy the summer, shop local and keep Port Credit clean. We all benefit by being nice to each other.

Import records tend to be more sought after as they often have different graphics on the cover and different song listings. “One hit Wonders” carry the misconception that they are automatically rare. Not so. There is no set formula for making an LP rare and valuable but just because the band “didn’t make it” commercially does not make it sought after. Many of these, apart from the hit, are just unlistenable.

The Ant and the Grasshopper

Family Fables: Count Your Blessings

Port Credit’s Leading Children’s Boutique Celebrates One Year By: Lindsay Howe

By Deanne Clipperton

The Ant and the Grasshopper is a charming children’s store located in the heart of Port Credit. This children’s boutique specializes in selling children and infant clothes, toys and accessories.

I recently read a blog on Today’s Parent.com that cited a study suggesting “there are benefits that come from stressful and life-changing situations we experience with our children.”

The Ant and the Grasshopper carries one-of-a-kind items you can’t find anywhere else. The shop also works with everyone’s budget, offering quality items at all price points. Customers can’t get enough of the store brand Too Cute for Words, which offers a large selection of quality hand crafted items. Come check out their new spring and summer stock on shelves now at The Ant and the Grasshopper!

The parent writing the blog indicated that “while parenting a child with special needs definitely has tough moments, I notice and appreciate the good ones more than ever before.” This struck a chord with me. So, lately I have tried to slow down and keep this in mind while searching out the positives and appreciating every accomplishment and blessing, no matter what the size. I have found that I am surprised and delighted every day with the happy moments my children give to me.

The Ant and the Grasshopper celebrated its one year anniversary on Saturday, April 5th. In just a little over a year, this boutique for children has made quite a buzz in the village. The Ant and the Grasshopper has become a popular destination for Port Credit families and tourists visiting the area. This boutique receives so many walk-ins because passers-by are drawn to the adorable clothing or precious trinkets they see in the display window and want to come in to take a closer peek. The Ant and the Grasshopper has a fairytale-like ambiance, with a beautifully painted mural on the back wall, and a life size tree.

Graydon my three year old experienced complication with his heart and lungs during my pregnancy, his prognosis was unknown prior to his birth. He had a procedure in utero and now has a clean bill of health. Last night he played his first soccer game and was so excited that it was finally his turn to do something and have his family watch him. He woke up at 6:00 am and came into my room asking to get ready for soccer, he wanted to get dressed in is uniform. After much debate and explanation that soccer was not until after breakfast, lunch and dinner he was appeased with a little practise outside with mom until it was game time. As he cuddled with my husband on the side lines after his first shift during the soccer game I caught myself smiling and giving a silent prayer for the gift of our little boy, who at one time had an uncertain future.

Owner Laurie Soissa started her own brand of children’s apparel four years ago called Too Cute for Words. Initially her items were sold online, but now these precious items can be found in store at The Ant and the Grasshopper. Many of the carefully hand crafted items are sewn by Laurie herself. She also takes special requests to make specific items for her customers. What inspired Laurie to start Too Cute for Words was seeing how her son and all the other boys in his class were dressed in the same or similar clothing from head to toe. With nearly identical clothing it was difficult to keep track of which clothes belonged to which child. Her vision for Too Cute for Words came from her desire to see children dressed uniquely; wearing clothing and accessories that reflect a child’s individual style. At The Ant and the Grasshopper new pieces are constantly being brought in, so there is always new gems to discover in store.

Mckenzie who is 5 and very much her own person but who struggles to find her niche in the middle of her two competitive and active brothers, has mastered the monkey bars. She was so proud of herself and could not wait to show me what she had done on the creative playground on her outdoor break at school. “Mom watch this” and off she went, all on her own she completed each rung of the monkey bars. All the way across she had a smile from ear to ear and a gritted determination as I cheered her on and her little brother watched in awe. A new achievement on her list of amazing accomplishments in her 5 year old existence. Nolan my 7 year old has had some struggles with reading. So, a few weeks ago when he began reading me a passage from his reader with animated voices and hand gestures my heart skipped a beat. The pride and sense of accomplishment in his whole demeanor was wonderful to see as just a few short months ago getting him to read with assistance let alone independently was a struggle.

Laurie loves hosting events at her store because it is an opportunity to bring in artists, and promote their work. The events are also good exposure for the boutique. This summer The Ant and the Grasshopper plans to host a customer appreciation BBQ. In addition to putting on art events, The Ant and the Grasshopper also offers art classes and travelling art parties. Children can explore their creativity and imagination by taking part in art classes offered on Monday evenings, or Sunday mornings. With travelling art parties, The Ant and the Grasshopper come to your house or backyard to put on an arts and crafts workshop for the birthday child and their friends. The Ant and the Grasshopper can work with any birthday theme, bring all the supplies with them, set up and tidy up, and leave a special free gift for the birthday child.

I know that life is busy, stressful and is not always rosy. But if we just take a few minutes and change our perspective and try to look at things half way full as opposed to half empty, we may be surprised at all the blessings that we receive on a daily basis that brings joy into our lives. I think that one of the blessings of being a parent is that you get to experience moments of your own but also those of your children. I wish you many blessings!

The Ant and the Grasshopper is located at 151 Lakeshore Road East in Port Credit. For more information call 905- 271-5858 or email info@theantandthegrasshopper. ca. Visit The Ant and the Grasshopper online at www.theantandthegrasshopper.ca.

The Brubacher Report

Limit your kids screen time this summer!

Toronto Real Estate Board President Dianne Usher announced that during April – the first full month of spring – Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported a 1.8 per cent year-over-year increase in sales through the Toronto MLS system. Total April 2014 sales amounted to 9,706, compared to 9,535 transactions in April 2013.

LMFitness and R3 Evolution Fitness Studio are excited to present the Let’s Move! 2 Week Fitness summer camp for Kids! The Let’s Move Fitness program has been created by the one and only Child & Youth Health and Fitness Educator, Liz Martino! Liz understands the importance of bringing back the fun in being physically active for our children and youth of today! With her Masters of Education, Personal Training Certification and years of experience working with kids, Liz has created a solution to put an end to childhood obesity! “I had to deal with my own health issues too late in my life, which could have been avoided if I was equipped with the proper tools and skills needed to live a healthy life.” Liz exclaims.

“April marked the beginning of the spring market, during which time we generally see the highest monthly sales totals in a given year. Despite the persistent shortage of listings, a substantial number of GTA residents were able to come to terms on a home that met their needs. However, sales levels would have been higher, but for the lack of supply,” said Ms. Usher. “A number of factors underlie the constrained supply of listings. Studies and polling suggest that the additional upfront land transfer tax in the City of Toronto has prompted some households to stay put and renovate rather than list their home and move. In the broader GTA context, above trend home sales in the years leading up to the recession have meant that many households who purchased during this period simply aren’t ready to move again,” continued Ms. Usher. The average sale price in Mississauga for April 2014 was $517,939 according to the MLS statistics on the Toronto Real Estate board MLS system.

It is not the actual hair that is affected, it is the hide or leather that can dry out, become stiff and crack. The optimum storage temperature is 45 degrees F. and 50% humidity. In Bazinas Furs’ storage vaults, the room is dark which prevents bleaching and fading of the colour. Moths and insects cannot survive at that temperature. Furs that are properly stored during hot weather can last up to fifty years or more. If you decide not to use a professional storage facility, do not store your coat in a cedar closet or chest. The oils can harm the fur. Keep the furs in the coolest closet possible and always in the dark. Check frequently for insect activity - especially moths.

Whether your retirement begins tomorrow or somewhere down the road, the time to begin real retirement planning is now – especially when it comes to ensuring you’ll have the retirement income you need to realize all your retirement dreams. Here’s your retirement planning quick start guide.

1. Decide when your want to retire. If you decide to retire ‘early’ you’ll have fewer years to save for retirement. If you retire after 65, you can continue the tax-saving, income-building advantages of investments held in your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) until the end of the year in which you turn 71. 2. Decide on your retirement lifestyle. Will you keep working at least part of the time, or even start a business? If so, you can save less in advance because even a little extra employment income can go a long way. 3. Conduct a retirement/income analysis. Estimate your monthly retirement living expenses like utilities, insurance and mortgage payments. Also consider additional costs such as travel, hobbies, and other forms of entertainment. 4. Know your government sources of income. Find out how much income you can expect from government sources like the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) or the Québec Pension Plan (QPP) and Old Age Security (OAS). Get good info at www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/services/pensions/infocard/janmar14.shtml. 5. Know your pension at work – if you have one. Determine whether your employer-provided pension plan is a defined benefit plan or a defined contribution plan. If it’s a defined benefit plan the Pension Administrator can give you a monthly benefit payout estimate. If it’s a defined contribution plan, you’ll have to do your own estimate of monthly pension. 6. Add in your savings. Know what you can expect from investments held in your Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA), RRSP and other investments. Also know the rules governing the withdrawal of income and the taxes that may be applied. 7. Do the math. Add up all sources of monthly retirement income including your savings and investment withdrawals. Compare this against your estimate of monthly retirement living expenses. If you come up short, you may need to re-think your planned retirement lifestyle, ramp up your savings strategies, or both. 8. Aim to manage taxes in retirement. Strategies can include income or pension splitting with your spouse, sharing CPP/QPP benefits, and investing in a tax-advantaged mutual fund-based Monthly Income Portfolio. 9. Get professional advice. Now that you know exactly what you want in retirement, meet with your professional advisor to develop a plan that will ensure you are adequately prepared for the costs of your retirement.

The team of professionals at Car Care Extraordinaire shares the philosophy of doing the best job they can do on a daily basis, and treating each customer like their first. The management and staff work hard to make the experience of getting your vehicle cleaned as easy and pleasant as possible. Car Care is known for setting realistic deadlines they know can be met. The family business began a few decades ago with eldest brother Tom Ross opening up Tom’s Car Cleaning, which was located across from Centre Plaza, in the Mississauga Chrysler Dealership building. Andrew, Tom’s younger brother took over ownership in 1988, changing the name of the shop to Car Care Extraordinaire. The business moved around the village a couple times, before settling in at their current location at 5 Alpha Mills Road. After 10 years at this location, Andrew and younger brother Chris have built a thriving business, and a strong customer base. Andrew believes in the importance of being sincere and showing customers how much you care. The trusted team at Car Care show their customers courtesy and consideration and are attentive to each customer’s needs. Andrew comments, “I’ve seen so much growth and development within the village over the years, and yet Streetsville remains a small town in respect to people’s needs. At Care Extraordinaire we guarantee our work and promise our complete attention to detail. If there is something a customer is not happy with, we welcome you to bring your car back to be fixed to your satisfaction.” Commenting on the success of his business, Andrew states, “The key to longevity in business is doing a great job and earning the trust and respect of your customers. If you provide a great service at a good price then people will spread the word.” In light of Car Care’s success providing car care services to the retail community, the team has branched out, handling large corporate accounts, detailing cars for major manufacturers from coast to coast!

Red Day Renew, Energize and Donate is a Keller Williams world-wide initiative dedicated to improving local communities. On May 8th, Keller Williams Real Estate Offices around the world closed their doors for the sole purpose of giving back to their community. Keller Williams Realty Solutions staff set out to take on two projects with special requirements. The first was a family in need of a major change to their home in order to bring their 1 year old son, Cristiano, home from The Hospital. Cristiano was born 26 weeks early, weighing only 910g and was transferred to the NICU unit. The combination of a complication with premature lungs and a condition called Omphalocele (organs growing into his umbilical cord), concerned the doctors. The doctor’s outcome was that Cristiano is incompatible with life and that they should consider end of life care. The family decided to give their son the chance to live, irrespective of how it may affect their lives. The second initiative of the Keller Williams Realty Solutions team was to volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Society, and to spend time with the Day Program Participants. The Keller team and volunteers set out their spring cleaning efforts at the Alzheimer’s facility, with raking, weeding and cleaning the yard and area. Decks were power washed and in perfect shape for the Day Program participants to enjoy the spring and summer months of the facility inside and outside as well. Of course, no program can be successful without the initiatives of the organizers, support staff, participants and sponsors. Keller Williams proudly acknowledges sponsors who donated food, equipment, supplies, services or their time. The Gratifying Harvest Journal

Value For Money Investing means we wish to allocate and use our hardearned resources in order to improve investment outcomes in a continuous and sustainable way at a fair and equitable price. In other words, achieve good investment returns AND receive fair value for the services provided. Costs do matter!

because the fund company remunerated a sales person when the fund was sold to you (some companies will try to characterize it otherwise). This means you likely do have an advisor involved with your account. Before doing anything else stop and evaluate whether you need or desire an ongoing advisor. An advisor costs money, (between upfront commissions and annual trailer fees the advisor is earning 1% a year on average) and if you need one, you will pay in some form. If you are about to transfer your funds to another advisor that is also compensated by the fund company, either through DSC funds, Front Load funds or no load funds (ironic name) with a large trailer, think again. You will trigger the redemption fee AND still have a high MER (management expense ratio). You have made your situation worse, not better. So maybe we need to also think about the advisor, not just the fund company. For new or small investors, mutual funds do provide a wonderful way to enter the markets beyond GICs. However, a high percentage of mutual funds are sold by commissioned advisors, many for whom the key word is commission, NOT advisors. This unfortunately often includes the banks, who are also product driven distributors. Additionally, the problem is not always only the advisor, but the timid investor, who is afraid to ask to get what they are paying for. Demand a good, complete financial plan of your advisor or financial planner. Expect it and ask for it. That is what you are paying the high MERs for. If your advisor is unable to provide it, then you have a clear answer and it is time to move on. As always, do be vigilant in understanding the advisor`s motivation for any recommendations they make at this time.

Seeking Redemption Again (Fees). I have been getting multiple inquiries about redemption fees so I thought this month I would take the time to look at this issue again. The possibility of redemption fees arise when you purchase a mutual fund with a deferred sales charge (DSC). Like no load funds, the mutual fund company does invest 100% of your deposit with them BUT if the fund is sold within a specified amount of time it will trigger redemption fees. This is due to the fund company not having sufficient time to recover the investment it made in obtaining the sale. Remember, these mutual funds have annual charges deducted (included in the management expenses or MER) each year and the fund company is counting on making money on you annually for enough years to satisfy their business plan. The redemption fees are usually a sliding scale, from about 6% to 0%, over a seven or eight year period. If you are unhappy with the fund you are in, you may usually transfer it to another fund within the same class of funds at the same company without triggering the fee. It is usually required to move to a similar class of funds because the management fees are set differently on DSC funds than other classes. The mutual fund company is happy to be able to continue to charge you as planned, albeit in a different fund. With many mutual fund companies having large offerings of funds, this is very commonly the route used to get out of a fund you are unhappy with. Interestingly, the most common sliding scale is a seven year period and the average holding period for a mutual fund in the Canadian marketplace has always hovered around seven years. Huh! I guess Canadians as a group do not like to pay redemption fees.

If you can find an advisor that specializes in lower cost funds or you are going to manage your own account, you can now evaluate the decision to dump your existing fund company on a return on investment basis. If your current funds have an MER of 2.5% and you can reduce the MER to 1.5% with another comparable fund with an advisor attached, then you have a basis for saving 1% per year. It may take you five or six years to reap the savings, so not much pay back for making the change. You will need other reasons like lack of confidence or poor service or inability to provide a good financial plan, etc. to trigger a change. However, if the current cost is over 4%, like I saw just last week, very different story with lots of opportunity to save. Before we leave that thought, just like in all your other shopping experiences, there are comparable products at very different price points, you just need to know where to shop. Few funds in Canada are completely unique regardless of the marketing materials that say otherwise, so lowering your costs is always an option.

If you decide that you would like to change fund companies before the expiry of the set time, you will confront these redemption fees. Now the fee is there

Advice For A Fee

tirement liabilityere

Now if you have decided to abandon the use of a company paid advisor altogether, for doing it yourself or using a fee only advisor, you can get a much different result. If much of your holdings are in very large funds that tend to track the index, move to an index fund or ETF. MER costs will fall below 0.5% and now with a 2% yearly savings you will have your money back in just a few years. If you seek out a fee only planner, set your expectations correctly. It is difficult to provide any worthwhile detailed plan for under $800, which is a high percentage cost when you only have a few dollars to invest. With additional fees each year for review, you may save some, but if you need or desire an advisor, it will be an ongoing cost. The average fee only planner is charging $200 to $250 per hour, but many do have discounts and lower rates to help out small or new investors, we do. Best of all, find a Portfolio Manager that also offers financial planning.

Increase your income through intelligent financial planning decisions.

Whisper

Three weeks and counting

By Linda Benne, Linda’s Craftique

By Marion Klinnert

Whisper Cardigan or Vest

On April 26 of this year in front of Private Moments Lingerie and Ladies Wear, a small but supportive group watched me get my head shaved. Ok, it was a number 2 guide on the shaver but to say it was shaved off was good enough! It only took about 7-8 minutes. The wind took my locks off down the sidewalk intermingled with Marilyn’s silver hair. My friend Marilyn joined me (brave soul) for the cause. You see, we both have the same friend who has cancer badly. I have many contacts due to serving mastectomy clients not to diminish anyone’s fight and that was the reason for this exercise and fundraiser.

Size: Small/Medium (Medium/Large) Measurements: width across back 18(22)” Length at center back for cardigan: 22” For vest: 26” Sleeve: 15” Materials: 1 skein Zambezi 1000m/125gr 1 pair 5.5mm needles, 5.5mm 16” circular needle Gauge: 14sts/4” on 5.5mm in stocking st

Afterwards friends gathered around me and “at-a-girl” was chanted. Brave! You are oh so brave (really?) My first look in the mirror resulted in shock! Then came the smile of oh-well, it will grow back. Soon, yes?

Note about sizing: This is a very loose flowing garment. Don’t let the width of the back fool you. I am a 42 bust and the small/medium fits me fine because of all the fabric in the front. I have also had a size “2” try on the small/medium and it was perfect on her. If you are doing thevest you should measure across your shoulders and do the back that wide. You can always give the garment more width by doing the fronts a bit longer. This cardigan is worked from side to side in one piece starting at right front edge.

The first night I went to bed sporting a polar fleece toque. Pretty? My head was cold, my ears were cold and I was COLD all over. Amazing at how warm our hair keeps us! During the night I woke up and felt agitated. The hat was too tight and my head was hot. Hmm, day/night 1. The next day I was cold and agitated again. I had to wear a scarf on April 28th as my neck was cold. I became whinny and couldn’t get warm. The hat and scarf my constant companions. This all went on for many, many days. In the meanwhile I was collecting money for the Betty Wallace Breast Cancer Screening Center. And then I had an “aha” moment. I put on Facebook that I was cold, whinny, agitated, anxious and healthy! Shame on me! Shame, shame on me. Healthy and whinny. My good friend Susan wrote back, you got it, you get it! Yes, I did “get it”. I thought of all the women, men and children, friends and family who have gone through the horrible ordeal of drug and cancer treatments. What and how do they feeling? Scared, anxious, whinny, agitated, cold? This was probably only a few emotions that I could think of. To be blessed with good health is to be truly blessed. Now that may sound religious or spiritual but it’s true. It’s a good thing to be healthy. And I am happy that I am.

Body: With 5.5mm needles using longtail/thumb cast on 75sts using 2 strands of yarn. Drop one strand of yarn and starting with a knit row work in stocking st until piece measures 22(24)”. Armhole opening: Using a contrast yarn knit the first 32 sts. Slip these 32 sts back onto left hand needle. Now using main yarn knit across all sts. Continue working in stocking st as before until piece measures 18(20)” from the contrast yarn. Repeat the armhole opening. Continue in stocking st for 22(24)” from second armhole contrast ending with a right side row. Using 2 strands of yarn cast off in knit.

The weather is getting warmer, I am less cold and my hair is growing. I have stopped whinning.

Sew Shoulders: Fold at contrast yarn with right sides together. Sew shoulders in 6” from side edge. Repeat for other side. Sleeve: With circular needle pick up the main yarn sts on either side of the contrast yarn. You will have 64sts on needle. Unravel the contrast colour. Starting at armhole join yarn and knit. If you find there are some gaps at the armhole and the shoulder pick up a few sts to tidy up the joins. Continue in stocking st. Work even until sleeve measures 15” from start of sleeve. Cast off purlwise using 2 strands of yarn. Vest: Work as given for body of cardigan casting on 89 sts instead of 75. Armhole Edge: Pick up as for sleeves of cardigan version. Using two strands of yarn cast off in purl.
