Clarkson Welcomes New Businesses to the Village

The Most Successful Sign in Mississauga!

By: Lindsay Howe

Clarkson is a growing and thriving community in Mississauga. Many of the flourishing businesses in the village have been around for decades and continue to be successful, with a sizeable customer base that continues to grow. Whereas other long-standing businesses have recently closed their doors, making room for new Clarkson hot spots. The long-established Village of Clarkson is over 200 years old, and the community is eager to welcome new businesses to give the neighbourhood a more modern ambiance. New businesses continue to pop up in Clarkson Village. Most recently, a coffee house, bakery, restaurant, hardware and a home accessory store have moved to the village. Clarkson offers many unique dining locations, pubs and cafes. Whether you are looking for a quick bite, or an elegant fine dining experience, Clarkson has the venue to satisfy your taste buds. Additionally, the village offers boutique shops and specialty stores to suit all your needs. Hockey teams from the City of Mississauga, City of Brampton, Mattamy Homes, Tim Hortons and the Village Times competed in a series of thrilling hockey games in support of local charities. This was the fifth year for the fundraising hockey tournament organized by Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson. Lorne Park Public School Celebrates 90 Years

LET’S GO TO THE SYMPHONY!

By J. Knox On Saturday, May 11, 2013, Lorne Park Public School celebrated its 90th Anniversary by inviting parents, community and Alumni to enjoy an afternoon of historical memorabilia, games, music, spirited dancing and cake.

Join the MSO for our exciting 42nd season under the baton of newly-appointed conductor Denis Mastromonaco. On October 12th, “Russian Treasures” introduces the mysteries of the Slavic soul, with Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila Overture, and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, performed by world-renowned pianist Valerie Tryon. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition brings the concert to a majestic close. Trumpeter Guy Few has long been a favourite with MSO audiences. On November 23rd, he headlines “Heroic Brass”, playing Haydn’s light-hearted Trumpet Concerto. Verdi’s Nabucco Overture and Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony complete the program.

Among some of the VIP Alumni in attendance was Rita Kennedy, whose maiden name was Rita Curran when she attended the school’s inaugural year in 1923.

Help us ring in the season at our “Holiday Spectacular” on December 14th. Joined by the Mississauga Youth Orchestra, we play all your favourites, from Tchaikovsky to Leroy Anderson. As always, you and your children can visit the Long & McQuade “Petting Zoo” and shop for arts and crafts created by our talented musicians. Don’t forget your sleigh bells!

The successful event was “a year in the making” said the school’s principal Michael Bartalos who credits parent volunteer, Christine Scott for planning and organizing the momentous occasion.

Join us on February 8th for “Young at Heart”, a casual concert of family favourites like Peter and the Wolf, The Blue Danube Waltz and the playful Toy Symphony, with a performance by the winner of the First Annual MSO Youth Concerto Competition. On March 22nd, we offer “Classical Origins” in a concert of Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms. Soloist Peter Longworth returns to our stage to perform Brahms’s passionate Piano Concerto No. 2. Our audience traditionally leaps to its feet and cheers when Mr. Longworth finishes playing! Our season ends on May 10th with the oft-requested return of The Band of the Royal Regiment of Canada. Band and orchestra will give you “The Royal Treatment” in a program by Respighi, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, and a special arrangement of Pirates of the Caribbean. Truly a season not to be missed! COMMUNITY CORNER Putting an end to violence and sexual abuse against women, one step at a time Local residents and business groups walked the streets of Clarkson for the 3rd Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraising event. This event took place on Saturday May 11th at Clarkson Crossing (Southdown Road and Lakeshore Road). Walk a Mile in Her Shoes raises money for abused women and children and promotes awareness of this abuse. The money raised goes to Armagh House, a second-stage housing resource in the Peel Region for women and children who have suffered abuse or sexual violence.

Childhelp Cut-a-Thon Sunday, April 21st was a big day for the staff at Michael’s Hair Body in Clarkson. It marked the end of a month long effort to raise funds and awareness for the abused and neglected children supported by ChildHelp Canada. ChildHelp is a national non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of child abuse, neglect and at-risk children through advocacy, prevention, treatment and community outreach. This cause is one that Michael’s Hair has supported for several years. Every April, which is national child abuse awareness month, the effort at the salon is amplified to help end the cycle of child abuse in homes in Canada. Michael’s Hair held a cut-a-thon and its stylists donated their time and talents and 100% of all the money made in services was donated to the foundation. With the help of its aesthetics and colour departments, they were able to offer even more services and raised even more money for the foundation. In an effort to add even more fun to the fundraising, Michael’s Hair offered $10 balloon pops, each balloon holding a winning prize, which proved to be plenty of fun for children and adults alike. Thank you to the team at Michael’s Hair and the giving citizens of Clarkson for making this day a wonderful success. Working as a team we can help stop child abuse.

Men literally walked a mile in her shoes, as they were expected to walk the mile distance in a pair of high heels. Countless males came out in support of The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence. According to the Peel Committee Against Woman Abuse, 1in 4 women will experience abuse in a relationship in their lifetime, and only 25% of these abuse incidents are reported. The walk raises awareness for men, so that they can better understand and appreciate women’s experience. The walk helps to open communication and discussions about sexualized violence and its causes. A special thanks to all of the men who came out to Walk a Mile in her Shoes to support putting an end to violence against women and girls. Clarkson Village Club Day Club Day in Clarkson Village will take place on Thursday, June 6 from 6:30 pm – 9 pm (Rain date Friday, June 7, 6:30 pm – 9 pm). Club Day is an evening where our neighbours of all ages are invited to join groups, associations, clubs, teams and informal groups. Groups have been invited to set up along Lakeshore Road and provide information and registration about their different organizations. Some of the many participants are: kids/youth day camps, youth groups, cubs, brownies, guides, scouts, cadets, gardening, cooking, book, movie, swimming, fishing, boating, sailing, walking, hiking, card, board/video game clubs; theatre, music troupes, bands; sports teams; new mothers groups, seniors groups, service clubs... and more. Even folks who meet somewhere at a standard time to enjoy each other’s company while they partake in an activity like walking, jogging, fishing, chess, board games, pick-up games of soccer, basketball, baseball or ball hockey will be there to welcome new members.

A&E - MARTY

Saga Summer Camps 2013

By: Hugh Smith

by Gabsy Evans, Volunteer Director www.clarksonbia.com

Stephanie McKenzie remembers her 2012 MARTY Awards experience. Attending as a media delegate, she had an intuitive moment during an interview.

Did you know that in any given week of the summer there are 120 children making new friends, playing games, and learning new skills right in your neighbourhood?

“While I was being interviewed by one of the TV channels last year, I said this year that I would be attending as a nominee,” McKenzie said. McKenzie, who is currently the host of HazeFM.ca’s Saturday night show, SugarNSpice, would be proven accurate this year, as she was nominated for the People’s Choice Award by the Vice President of the Clarkson Business Improvement Association, Alice Fahey. “I was really honoured,” McKenzie said of the nomination. “My jaw hit the floor. I almost cried because [Alice Fahey’s] referral letter really did talk about my passion and my dedication to the city of Mississauga.” The Mississauga Arts Awards, or MARTYs, have been presented by the Mississauga Arts Council for the past 19 years, honouring artists in 14 different categories for their contribution to the Mississauga arts scene. Luiza Sadowski, MAC’s communications coordinator, said that McKenzie has contributed to many initiatives in Mississauga. “She’s definitely shown a lot of leadership for not-for-profit organizations,” Sadowski said. “She helps out the Mississauga Earth Council a lot through promoting a lot of our events.” It was through this work with organizations such as the Clarkson BIA that helped McKenzie win the People’s Choice Award with over 3000 votes, representing a record breaking 50% of the votes cast.

Run out of Chartwell Baptist Church in the heart of Clarkson Village, Saga Summer Camps have operated for the past eight years and are entering their ninth summer. Open to all children in the community who have completed grade 1 up to those who have completed grade 6 (or grade 7 for Sports Camp), Saga offers the complete day camp experience for a fraction of the cost. For only $25 dollars a week for Day Camp and $60 dollars a week for Sports Camp (which includes the cost of the sports equipment campers keep afterwards), campers at Day Camp get a jam-packed week of games, sports, crafts, and trips to the local swimming pool and places such as the Ontario Science Centre and the ROM. Campers at Sports Camp have the opportunity to not only play sports, but to develop skills through drills and training.

“It comes right back to being humbled,” McKenzie said of her feelings on winning the award. “Knowing that that many people out there supported me being that young fresh talent in Mississauga.” The award could present McKenzie with many future opportunities, according to Sadowski. Past winners have included Oscar Peterson, Mose Scarlett, and JUNO award winner Liberty Silver. “With all the congratulatory messages that did come in, people have said ‘this is just the start for you,’” said McKenzie. “There’s so much more going forward in the future, and I will always remember the Mississauga Arts Council for being the outlet in which I was able to receive the People’s Choice Award.”

The low cost is part of Saga’s commitment to inclusivity and bringing the Clarkson Village neighbourhood together. Community Pastor Jamie Bay explains it “community happens when neighbours gets together, and that’s what Saga does best”. If you have been part of Saga before you know that campers will have a chance to spend the summer making new friends from the neighbourhood as they experience programs created just for them by a team of energetic and dedicated staff. If you haven’t been involved in the past, this year is your chance to learn why last summer 248 families brought their children back week after week to Saga Summer Camp. Saga Day Camp and Sports Camp runs for seven weeks in the summer, from July 2nd to August 15th. Registration is available through their website at www.chartwellmississauga.com/saga or through the Chartwell offices at 905-855-5001. All weeks are still open for registration but space is limited. Sign up today to give your children a safe and fun experience right in your home neighbourhood.

Is Your Kids Safe at School? By J.Knox

Concerned Peel Parents for the Health & Safety of ALL Children hosted a Wi-Fi information session at the Port Credit Legion on May 9th and believe our children’s health while they are at school is at risk, the evenings Keynote speakers Dr. Magda Havas of Trent University and former Microsoft Canada President Frank Clegg, agree also. In March of 2012, the Peel District School Board approved $7 million Learning and Technology Plan that once implemented would see all Peel Elementary and Secondary Schools installed with Wi-Fi Internet connection by fall of 2013. Wi-Fi is a technology that allows electronic devices to exchange data wirelessly using electromagnetic (radio frequency) radiation, the same technology that is used in microwaves, baby monitors, cell phones/cell towers, smart meters and cordless phones. Dr. Magda Havas, a Canadian expert on the health effects of electromagnetic radiation, warns that students and teachers are going to become ill and states that Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 (SC6), a document that school boards use as their guideline to the safe use of, or exposure to radiation emitting devices, is outdated.

Numerous published scientific studies suggest that mobile and wireless technologies may pose a health risk, especially to children. Studies have found that Exposure to a Wi-Fi router can increase heart rates in some people and exposure to a Wi-Fi enabled laptop can decrease human sperm motility and fragment human DNA. Electromagnetic fields from Wi-Fi transmitters have been found to have detrimental effects on attention and mental activity as well as affecting brain development in children and young people.

Criticism from the world’s leading scientists of the standards set out in SC6 during public hearings of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health three years ago encouraged the World Health Organization to place all radio-frequency radiation on the Class 2b Cancer watch-list in 2011.

Concerned Parents of Peel are asking that the Peel Board of Education take precautionary measures and opt for hard wiring school Internet connections with Ethernet or fiber-optic wiring instead of the potentially lethal Wi-Fi. Dr. Havas points out that hard wiring for Internet use is faster, more secure, is energy efficient and poses no health risks.

“Now we have the American Academy of Environmental Medicine writing a letter to our school boards saying their doctors are already treating kids who are sick from school Wi-Fi exposure.” says Frank Clegg, CEO of Citizens 4 Safe Technology. “It’s unconscionable to ignore all these warnings and instead hide behind the only authority left that is lagging behind (SC6/Health Canada). If the School Board is going to enforce 21st Century learning then they should adhere to a 21st Century standard of safety.” says Frank.

School Mural is a Symbol of Hope for the Credit River

Michael’s Hair Body Mind’s Spa gets you summer ready

By J. Knox

On Friday, April 3rd, students and staff at Lorne Park Public School revealed their very own Stream of Dreams Mural with over 200 hand-painted fish that swirl and flow through a length of chain link fencing at the front of their school.

Welcome the heat by experiencing a city getaway at Michael’s Hair Body Mind’s Spa! Take a break from the kids and your busy life…let us ease your stress away.

Stream of Dreams is an educational program offered by the Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) and the Stream of Dreams Murals Society. As well as creating their dream fish mural, students participated in a workshop led by the CVC and learned about the importance of their local watersheds and the things they can do to protect it.

Our city getaway is customized for each individual’s needs. You can experience total body relaxation from head to toe. Choose from a variety of treatments designed to pamper you and indulge your senses, from Full Body Massages and Body Exfoliations, to Manicures and Pedicures, as well as Facial Treatments. Get bikini ready with waxing or IPL treatments. Our team of professionals personalizes your treatment by choosing high quality products from exotic Mango and Pomegranate Lime Soaks, Peña Colada and Wild Berry Masks, to Green Apple, Lemon, and Coconut Waxes. Your tropical getaway is just a phone call away! Call us to book your appointment today!

Parent volunteer Christine Scott who spear-headed the project with the CVC, helped to organize the students and parent volunteers in cutting out, painting and installing their ‘Dreamfish’. Community partners who also helped in the project were RBC, Rona at Royal Windsor and General Paint.

While you enjoy the sun and fun of summer, don’t forget to take care of your hair as well as your skin. Just as we use sunscreen to protect our hair from the harmful UV rays, protecting your hair is essential to keeping it hydrated and healthy. Michael’s recommends using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner along with a leave in treatment with sunscreen, like the Davines SU leave-in spray. Su was created to help protect your hair from the damage caused by sun, chlorine and salt water by removing left over residue and replenishing lost moisture. If it’s your colour you’re worried about, Davines Alchemic shampoo and conditioning treatments will keep your reds redder, your brunettes richer and keep your blondes away from a brassy fate. However you protect your hair from the wares of summer, don’t forget the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, and come in to Michael’s for a trim and deep conditioning treatment to start the season off right. Michael’s Hair Body Mind is located at 1735 Lakeshore Road West in Mississauga. Phone: 905-822-0112

Recipe of the Month!

Investment Myths that Could Cost You Money

By Chef John Paul Angheloni Solstice Restaurant and Wine Bar Summer is upon us, this salad is a great one to bring to a family bbq or picnic.

Sometimes investor beliefs turn out to be myths that may cause investing mistakes. Here are some of the more popular myths that may hold a grain of truth, but are probably best avoided.

Summer Orzo Salad Ingredients: 250g cooked orzo pasta 8 pieces Sliced sundried tomatoes ½ cup pitted and halved kalamata olives 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes 1 cup finely chopped celery as well as some celery leaves 1/3 cup chopped Italian parsley ½ cup crumbled feta cheese ½ cup halved artichoke hearts ½ cup extra virgin olive oil ¼ cup rice wine vinegar ¼ cup fresh lemon juice Salt and pepper to taste.

A high yield means a high return. Whether you invest in bonds with the highest interest rate or stocks with the highest dividend yield, high yield typically comes with high risk. Consider the risk of a bond default or dividend cut, which typically lowers the price of the bond or stock, as well as the income. (Keep in mind that dividends may be increased, decreased or eliminated at any point without notice.) The U.S. dollar will decline. No one has a good track record in forecasting currencies. Since we don’t know which way the U.S. dollar will move, basing portfolio decisions on such a specific prediction is risky. Keep in mind that many U.S. companies receive more than half of their profits from outside the country, so not all will be hurt by a declining U.S. dollar. So instead of avoiding U.S. investments because of an expectation for the U.S. dollar to decline, consider making them an appropriate part of your international investments.

Method: In a large bowl place orzo with all the dry ingredients, then add liquids and seasoning. It is best to make at least 8 hours in advance for best flavor.

The best investments have the lowest fees. Fees matter, but returns after fees and taxes are what you keep. So consider whether the fees pay for something valuable, such as better liquidity, enhanced asset selection or improved diversification, though keep in mind that diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Don’t be misled into thinking that all low-fee investments provide high returns. You may pay higher fees to own bond or equity funds, but these fees are often more than justified by the benefits they provide to your portfolio.

Have a great summer!

You can’t be too diversified. Owning many similar investments tends to increase the complexity of your portfolio without increasing the return or reducing the risk. If you own individual stocks and bonds, you should consider constructing your portfolio carefully to ensure adequate diversification. To start, each stock or bond should constitute no more than 5% of your portfolio, and they should be spread across a variety of industries. If you own mutual funds as well, you’ll need fewer to achieve adequate diversification, but you’ll want to own funds that complement each other. Speak with your financial advisor to learn more about these and other myths that could keep you from meeting your long-term goals. Edward Jones, Member Canadian Investor Protection Fund. Sousa Nominated As Liberal Party Candidate www.clarksonbia.com

Looks towards the future of Mississauga South Yesterday, at Oasis Convention Centre, a strong contingent of supporters from Mississauga South turned out to nominate Mississauga South MPP Charles Sousa the Ontario Liberal Party candidate to run in the next provincial election. Joined by his wife Zenny, daughter Jessica and father Antonio Sousa, the local MPP was humbled by the kind words spoken by a young Mississauga South liberal Kyle Gerow, who nominated the local MPP. Sousa, who was first elected to represent the riding in 2007, reflected on the progress the community has made during his tenure, from fighting for air quality, to education reform by requiring schools to teach financial literacy. However, the recently appointed Finance Minister also stated that there is still work to be done, both locally and provincially with the revitalization of our waterfront, and the elimination of our deficit.

“I am truly honored and grateful for the tremendous show of support. We’ve made incredible progress together, but we still have more to do. That’s why I am seeking the nomination as your Liberal MPP”— Mississauga South MPP and Liberal candidate Charles Sousa

“We are tremendously happy to nominate Charles as our candidate for the next provincial election. He has demonstrated time and time again his commitment not only to his constituents, but to his province as well. To have a man of such high character representing us at Queens park is truly an honour, and we look forward to his continued service not only as our local MPP, but as our Finance Minister as well” – Heather Kirkconnell, President Mississauga South Provincial Liberal Association

“Charles is the guy I want by my side: as Finance Minister, as a committed representative of his constituents, and as a friend; he has proved himself again and again. He works hard for this province every day, and he has accomplished so much for his community and for Ontario. I couldn’t be prouder that he’s a part of our team.”— Kathleen Wynne, Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party and Premier of Ontario
