A novel of triumph over circumstance Katie Davis

News Reporter Straight from the introductory section of ‘What Did You Say? Memories on a Road Less Travelled’ by Throne and Coronation native Douglas (Hugh) Gillard, it becomes plain that the autobiographical nature of this novel will spare no courtesy in recollecting the incredibly painful experiences that marked the journey of a man born with a single cleft lip and palate. His tale begins at a pivotal and telling point in his journey: a new early twenties University graduate in marketing with his first big interview with a multi-national oil company. Though he’d purchased a fresh, new suit for the occasion and held hopes that his high marks and summer experience in the patch would aid his chances, he is quickly struck down two questions into the interview with an offhand remark: “There’s no way you can be a marketer with the way you talk.” The emotional punch Gillard the reader feels at this moment, though a fraction of what Gillard experienced firsthand, is to carry forth through this highly engaging personal autobiography. His is a journey through deep hardship to discover the triumph of character of a young man born with a physical condition; one that would colour much of his worldly understanding throughout his lifetime, both inspirationally and tragically.

Don’t try to read the Income Tax Act by Jeff Bowes, Research Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is warning Canadians not to try and read the Income Tax Act before filling out their tax forms, because if they do, they will end up missing the deadline for filing. The current Income Tax Act is 3,206 pages long – consisting of 1,038,162 words. The average adult can read 300 words per minute, which means it would take 57 hours and 41 minutes to read the Income Tax Act, without any breaks. “If you read the Income Tax Act for an hour every night before going to sleep, it would take you nearly two months to get through it… not that anyone would be crazy enough to want to do that,” said CTF Research Director Jeff Bowes. First passed in 1917 as a temporary measure to help cover the cost of the First World War, Canada’s federal tax law was originally 11 pages long. By 1948, it had grown to 88 pages. The 1970 edition was 424 pages, and Canadians were frustrated with the complexity of the Act. After a

Royal commission, and public consultations a major tax reform bill was passed in 1971, but it just replaced one complex tax system with another. The Harper-led Conservative government has amended the act 22 times, introducing dozens of boutique tax credits. In the process they’ve added 631 pages to the Income Tax Act – that’s 220,356 words. More amendments are contained in C-31, the 362-page federal budget implementation bill. “Our tax system has gotten more complicated every single year,” continued Bowes. “We need to get rid of boutique tax credits for special interests,” said Bowes. “We could toss thousands of pages from the Income Tax Act, cut the number of tax brackets, and cut tax rates for everybody.” Bowes noted that in addition to the Income Tax Act there are 1,619 additional pages of regulations that explain and further define the actual law. “It doesn’t need to be this complicated,” Bowes concluded.

by Vitor Marciano, Press Secretary to the Leader of the Official Opposition Alberta power consumers will soon be guaranteeing massive profits for one of the world’s wealthiest individuals once the sale of AltaLink from SNC-Lavalin to Berkshire Hathaway is finalized, the Wildrose Official Opposition said on Monday, May 5. Berkshire Hathaway is owned by investor Warren Buffet, consistently ranked among the world’s wealthiest people. The sale means Buffet’s company will own AltaLink’s transmission infrastructure - for which Albertans paid 100 per cent of the costs - and inherit a handsome guaranteed annual return. Not only were Albertans forced to purchase expensive and unnecessary power lines for AltaLink through Bill 50, the sole-sourced contract also guaranteed the

company a minimum nine per cent annual return on all lines built, Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith said. “Alberta families and small businesses continue to pay more and more on their power bills and now one of the world’s wealthiest men stands to reap all the benefits,” Smith said. In Question Period, Wildrose Electricity Critic Joe Anglin blasted the government for allowing Alberta power consumers to repeatedly be gouged. “Given SNC-Lavalin is going to profit $2.35 Billion thanks to Alberta’s ratepayers and given Alberta’s ratepayers will guarantee Warren Buffet, one of the wealthiest men in the world, an annual income of nine per cent on all future transmission lines built, what’s in this deal for Albertans and who is looking after them?” Anglin asked.

Orville will be lovingly remembered by his sister ‘Leola’ Muhlbeier and nieces and nephews Robert (Marilyn) Muhlbeier, Ken Muhlbeier, Wayne Muhlbeier, Judy (Larry) Pals, Fred Muhlbeier, Carol (John) MacNeil, Brenda Gebhardt, Dianne (Patrick) Page, Darcy (Tracy Quinlan) Muhlbeier, Kurt (Claudette) Swanson and Heather (Gord Gauthier) Embree Swanson; fourteen great nieces and nephews and nine great-great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Charles in 1935, his mother Clara (Ellergodt), sister Ione Swanson, brothersin-law Albert Swanson and Frank Muhlbeier, nephew-in-law Andy Gebhardt, great nephew Jarrett Gebhardt and brother Arthur Embree on April 26, 2014. Orville was born in Castor on July 26, 1924, the first son and second child to Clara and Charles Embree. They resided south of Castor, moved to Coronation in 1926, and then to their present home in 1931. Orville graduated from Coronation School and joined the Canadian Air Force. He trained in Prince Edward Island and became a Navigational Instructor at Gander, Newfoundland. Thankfully, the war ended before he was deployed. Orville then went on to work at the Canadian Pacific Railway as a Messenger on the Kerrobert Line and the Crowsnest Pass Line. He then worked as a Night Foreman at the CPR Truck Terminal in Red Deer until his retirement. Orville was a shareholder at the Red Deer Golf and Country Club, trained the Juniors and golfed himself as much as possible. Orville retired in Coronation, and

further enjoyed golfing and goose hunting with Mike, his Labrador dog. Orville also loved to collect various items including golf cards from around the world, plates and many other special items. Orville set up and managed several bluebird runs to help reintroduce bluebirds into east central Alberta and supported Ducks Unlimited with birdhouses for auction. He enjoyed making and doing puzzles, painted wood working of birdhouses and wooden characters on his scroll saw. He enjoyed living in Coronation Long Term Care with Arthur since 2011. Here he kept busy with his penny puzzle and Sudoku. A memorial service took place at the Trinity United Church on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Susan Hertell officiating. GAR DENING

ECA rEviEw

Gardening without breaking the bank Generally speaking, gardening is an inexpensive activity, requiring only a minimum of equipment. However, when gardeners start to roam the big box stores and garden centres looking for inspiration, they can easily become horrified at the thought of having to purchase dozens of different products. But gardeners don’t need every available gardening tool. A few quality tools are sufficient for taking care of your flowerbeds or vegetable gardens. A healthy garden is a garden that costs less money. Why? Problems rarely arise if you choose plants adapted to your area. They’ll be naturally more resistant and will know how to protect themselves from pest infestations. Gardeners also need to learn to accept the presence of insects, which, in many

cases, do not harm plants. If necessary, there are lots of different household remedies. For example, in the event of an aphid invasion, instead of buying a commercial pesticide, you can spray the affected plant with a jet of water from the garden hose or prepare a decoction of rhubarb leaves. Trading is another good way to save money; it is also a cherished practice among gardeners, wherein neighbours might exchange some peony tubers for a few prized heirloom tomato seeds. Public gardens often hold plant sales, and some amateur gardening associations offer group purchases to their members. Keep in mind that garage sales in your neighbourhood are great opportunities for finding tools and decorative objects at low cost.

Roses aren’t that complicated Elderly gardeners love saying that flowerbeds without roses aren’t true flowerbeds! However, many amateur gardeners decline to grow roses out of the belief that they require too much care. And yet, roses are hardy and are accepting of the vagaries of Mother Nature. To ensure that the queen of flowers flourishes throughout the summer months, a gardener need only follow a few basic rules.

to water it during heat waves in order to encourage new growth and lovely blooms.

OPENING MAY 1ST

Fertilizers

Products specifically designed for roses are available on the market. One application before the flowering season will encourage blooms. Deadhead faded blooms in order to extend the flowering season.

Weeding

The soil around rose bushes must be kept clear, as they do not like having to compete with other plants. Hoeing the soil regularly will allow rainwater to infiltrate more easily. If you are thinking of applying a layer of mulch in order to keep the ground moist and prevent weeds from growing, be sure to avoid using pine bark mulch; it will add too much acidity to the soil.

Watering

Even though it’s extremely rare for a rose bush to die of thirst, it is still important

Compost

Roses flourish easily in good garden soil. They also grow well in other types of soil, as long as they are enriched with compost. A generous application — about 10 centimetres — at the beginning of the spring will give good results. In addition, compost lightens heavy soils and gives consistency to light, sandy soils. Avoid applying compost during the growing season, as it could harm young shoots.

INFERNO™ DUO DELIVERS A DOUBLEBARREL BURNDOWN SOLUTION TO PROBLEM WEEDS. Tough broadleaves and flushing grassy weeds in spring wheat have met their match. INFERNO™ DUO Herbicide from Arysta LifeScience goes to work with both barrels blazing, as two active ingredients work together with glyphosate to deliver added benefit on target broadleaf and grass weeds.

“In the past, spring wheat growers had to choose between investing in either a grassy weed product or sticking with a broadleaf-only product like Express® Pro or PrePass™ with their glyphosate burndown. Now with INFERNO DUO, they don’t have to choose,” says Trent McCrea, Arysta LifeScience Marketing Manager, Herbicides.

NO BURNDOWN PRODUCT IS MORE RUTHLESS INFERNO DUO combines the enhanced broadleaf activity of tribenuron (the same active ingredient in Express® SG) with the broadleaf and longerlasting soil activity on grasses of flucarbazone. “INFERNO DUO with glyphosate gets control of hard-to-kill weeds like dandelion, hawk’s beard, foxtail barley* and Roundup Ready® canola, while providing longer lasting residual control of grassy weeds like flushing wild oats** and green foxtail,” says Debbie Michielsen of Meadowland Ag Chem Sales.

AND FOR BROADLEAVES ONLY, THERE’S INFERNO Arysta LifeScience is also offering an alternative burndown product to Express SG. Growers can boost their glyphosate performance on weeds 14051TA0 14044TA1 like volunteer Roundup Ready canola and more, by adding INFERNO Herbicide in an equivalent high-quality WDG formulation. For more information on INFERNO DUO and INFERNO, visit Meadowland Ag Chem Sales, or call 1-866-761-9397

*With 900 gae/ha rate of glyphosate. ** Up to 2 weeks residual control.

Record cattle prices spark increased demand for livestock price insurance by the Alberta Beef Producers As Alberta’s Livestock Price Insurance Program expands across Western Canada this month, demand for price insurance in Alberta is growing as cattle producers witness cattle prices that have been hitting record highs over the last few months. “Cattle producers are experiencing some of the strongest prices in history on their cattle, and they don’t want to risk losing that money if prices fall for some reason. That’s why so many Alberta producers are using price insurance to protect the high cattle prices they’re seeing today. Participation in cattle price insurance has tripled in Alberta over the last year because it gives producers an Alberta floor price that locks in up to 95 per cent of the future forecasted price on their cattle. And it doesn’t put a ceiling on the price they can sell their cattle for if markets keep climbing,” Now renamed the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program (WLPIP), Hagen says the success and uptake of price insurance in Alberta was a major factor in the decision to expand it across Western Canada this spring. AFSC will now deliver the program – which has only been available in Alberta – to cattle and hog producers across the West on behalf of the federal and provincial governments. As WLPIP rolls out across the region, there will be no changes to the program in Alberta, says Hagen. “Other than a new logo and website at www.wlpip.ca, it’s the same program Alberta producers have used for years to protect themselves from any risk that could cause these high cattle prices to drop below their insured floor price,” she says, noting, “We’re adding settlement indexes and coverage levels for the other provinces, but coverage and settlement prices in Alberta will still be based on the Alberta cattle market.” The expansion of WLPIP comes at a good time, says Brian Perillat, a senior

Alberta cattle market analyst with Canfax. Cattle prices have jumped about 20 per cent over the last four months – and those higher prices bring higher risk, says Perillat, especially for feedlots and backgrounders that buy high-priced calves and feeder cattle to place on feed or pasture. “Those producers have more money on the table than ever before. And with the increased market volatility that often comes with high prices, producers could easily lose a lot more money a lot faster if they’re not using tools like price insurance in today’s markets,” he explains. While there’s every indication today’s strong prices will continue through 2014 – due to tight cattle supplies in Canada and the U.S., a weak Canadian dollar, and low feed costs – there are always unexpected risks that can come out of nowhere and change that picture, adds Perillat. “For example, the Canadian dollar can be extremely volatile and negatively impact cattle prices. Or if there’s a drought or some other weather concern that results in a small U.S. grain crop, that could reduce cattle prices this year,” he explains. “There’s too much at stake not to protect the high prices we’re seeing today with price insurance. That’s why we actively promote WLPIP to our members,” says Reg Schmidt, with the Feeder Associations of Alberta (FAA), an industry group that sat on the steering committee that developed livestock price insurance in Alberta. The FAA helps producers finance feeder cattle purchases through a Loan Guarantee Program. “We also finance WLPIP premiums with our loans so every producer can purchase coverage if they wish,” says Schmidt, noting that as cattle prices have increased, so have the floor prices producers can lock in with WLPIP. About 40 per cent of FAA members enrol in WLPIP through the Cattle Price Insurance Program (WCPIP). Schmidt

anticipates that number could double because “producers are realizing price insurance is a necessary part of doing business. It’s bankable so they can take it to their lender to access credit more easily. And you don’t have to look hard for examples of how WLPIP has helped cattle producers manage their price risk,” he says, pointing to the XL Foods plant closure in Brooks almost two years ago due to E. coli concerns. “Feeder cattle fell nearly $20 per 100 pounds at that time, and producers who had price insurance were getting payouts of nearly $200/ head,” he says. WLPIP programs are available yearround for fed cattle, feeder cattle, and hogs. The only exception is WCPIP-Calf which is offered from February to May due to the seasonality of calf sales, says Hagen, noting the deadline to purchase WCPIP-Calf policies this year is May 29.

ECA REVIEW

CORONATION/STETTLER, AB.

The cruelty of judgemental people Professional Directory Cont’d from Pg 1 His siblings did not treat him differently, nor did his parents, so for many years Gillard recalls youthful struggles and jovial moments not unlike any other child of that era and age. He recalls the anxiety-ridden asking for money to attend films at Coronation’s Avalon Theatre, and the unique experience of attending a one-room schoolhouse in Throne, with pristine detail of both the physical settings and childhood inner monologue. He often infuses a paragraph or an observation with reflexive humour, which demonstrates a honed wit and selfdepreciating comedy that lightened the read and added variety to the flow of the novel. When Gillard reached Grade 2, wherein he and his siblings are transferred to the Coronation School, he is side-swiped by a teacher’s lack of empathy for a child she does not understand, literally and figuratively. It is in this moment of embarrassment and sadness experienced by the young boy that the reader is enlightened to a theme Gillard encounters many times: the cruelty of judgemental people who lack sympathetic comprehension skills. Gillard’s novel memoir recounts his journey through adolescent dating and attempts to discover his life purpose, among a myriad of other situations, that show a deep internal questioning which would ultimately lead to much self-growth. Through unexpected friendships that would bring him self-confidence, a blind date that would usher in a long and happy marriage, to a career journey in marketing that led him to great heights in the Oil and Gas industry; Gillard weaves an inspirational monologue that demonstrates the viability of perseverance over hardship and faith in oneself to overcoming obstacles. Also intimately present within his text are examples of the true, manifest beauty of the human condition. Many times in the book, Gillard recollects moments where his fellow man and woman stood up for him as a collective: from students reciting his name in sequence for his

Grade 3 teacher to his fellow graduating classmates writing a petition against his treatment by the multinational oil company, the novel demonstrates how the actions of others can be liberating and lead to profound memories, many years later.

The process

Gillard said this novel was something he always had ambition to write, though the motivation to pen his journey evolved over time. “I had always wanted to write a little bit of family history for future generations, as I wish we had had that,” he reflected in an interview on Monday, May 5. “I was always encouraged to write about my humorous stories and others encouraged me to write something inspirational, given my challenges and career success.” What began conceptually as a threebook series became one single novel memoir with humourous mini-stories, deep personal reflection and historical accounts woven into a single narrative. “Initially the book was for close friends and family, but my publisher convinced me there was a wider audience for it,” he noted, in reference not only to his personal history and those who might enjoy his humour, but also to individuals who may be suffering from the social and psychological effects of a cleft lip and palate. Gillard said the book was an effort in understanding the complexities of the written word that took him a years worth of trial and error to ease into. “I’m not a writer. As I say in the book I don’t have a creative bone in my body, though I think I can write humour,” he said. “The process was harder than I thought. As I began to write it I got writer’s block almost immediately.” Gillard said that he eventually found a flow of prose he was comfortable with, sequencing the book in unique sections to keep individuals interested and get his message across. “It took a couple of years of writing and rewriting, having it edited,” Gillard mused. “I’m quite satisfied with it now it but it was a challenge.” Aspects of the novel memoir are deeply

personal, which Gillard noted was integral to having people understand his journey more thoroughly. “I felt that it was important to have people understand who I really was, to tie it all together,” he said. “But I did have my moments when the memories were difficult to put down. They brought back not just the good times, so to put those down in words was sometimes emotionally challenging for me.” In reviewing his personal history, Gillard said the support he felt from his classmates, parents, siblings and mentors in his life had a profound affect on the man he was to become. “I had tremendous support of friends and teachers in general,” he noted of both his one-room school in Throne and his experience at the Coronation School. His upbringing, he said, also built solid roots of security from a young age. “My family taught me the value of hard work, honesty and ethics,” he said. “Between that and growing up in the [Throne and Coronation] area, I think it set good values for the rest of my life, without a doubt.” Once convinced to publish the book, Gillard decided to donate all the proceeds from the novel to the charity Operation Rainbow Canada, a non-profit out of Vancouver that funds doctors and nurses to perform cleft palate surgery on children worldwide. For individuals reading his novel who may have a cleft lip or cleft palate, he said he hopes they gain an understanding that their physical body should not prevent them from pursuing their aspirations. “I would hope [these readers] would gain that they can do anything they want,” said Gillard. “They can achieve whatever they want, if they work hard, do a good job when the opportunity is there and move forward as if they are absolutely normal.” ‘What Did You Say?’ is available on Amazon.ca in hardcopy and Kindle, on Kobo and can be ordered from 4thfloorpress.com. The author can also be contacted at hughgillard@shaw.ca.

The wheels keep turning for new Camrose Chrysler Sales Rep Ed Rye was sold on Camrose Chrysler long before he began working as a sales representative for the company. In 2003 he bought a car from Mike Rodin, who is now the dealer principal. It was a 300M and the best car he’s ever owned. “Never missed a beat,” says Ed. “and still going strong.” After a life of working in the oil patch and driving trucks, Ed decided to take it a little easier. All those jangled miles on the road were taking a toll on his lower back. However, life in his recliner was tougher on him than bouncing around on a long haul, so he picked up the phone and called Mike, wondering if they had any opportunities. A new door opened. “Here I am,” says Ed with a big friendly smile. “It’s a blessing.” He absolutely enjoys the work, meeting people and staying vital. If you’re looking for a new vehicle, give Ed a call. You’ll be impressed by how hard he’ll work for you.

Oh deer! A collection of these majestic animals was spotted on the move in a field east of Pioneer Trail in Hanna on Wednesday, April 30.

Are you heron what I’m heron? A massive flock of the long-billed birds was mulling about in a field south of Township Road 360 on Wednesday, April 30. The photo above shows a mere slice of the hundreds of birds hanging out in the spring air. ECA Review/K. Davis

The Brownfield/Coronation Range Riders MultiClub highway clean-up on Saturday, May 3 was a huge success although the weather was cold. The task was made much easier by kind words and kind gestures from the community as well as air horns from passing semi trucks. Overall, it was a big job, said Jeremy Burkinshaw, but the clean ditches afterwards was very rewarding. (L-R) Back Row: Kylan Huber, Wade Black, Norman Black, Michael Black and Jeremy Burkinshaw.
