Halkirk, Sedgewick events net cowboy cash, aches John MacNeil

Review Reporter On the home stretch of travelling about 15 hours in his camper-truck on the Aug. 22-24 weekend, young cowboy Cody Resch summed up his latest rodeo marathon in one word. “Long,” the Leader, Sask., native said with a smile Sunday in Sedgewick after the second of his back-to-back bronc-riding performances in east-central Alberta, including a Halkirk stop on Saturday. Resch took home $498 from the Halkirk bull-a-rama and $745 from a runner-up finish at the Sedgewick Roughstock Rodeo, after opening the weekend Friday at the Edam indoor rodeo in northern Saskatchewan, five hours from his home in the southwestern part of the province. Including $77 at Edam, he picked up $1,320 on a whirlwind weekend. “It was a good weekend,” said Resch, 19, the Canadian Cowboys’ Association novice saddle-bronc champion last year. “These bronc deals are always a good thing. I love comin’ to em’, no matter how far (away they are). A guy tries to do everything he can to get to them.” Resch gave gutsy efforts in the Halkirk and Sedgewick events, and his winnings were well-earned. He limped off the rodeo grounds Sunday evening after posting matching scores of 74 in Sedgewick’s long and short rounds. He also managed two qualified rides in Halkirk, where all of the bronc- and bull-riders each received a second go. It was a rough-and-tumble night for Resch, who needed help as he left the rodeo arena after his second of two painful — but

And then, the horse before that stepped on my arm and all that stuff. “The (second) horse was buckin’ pretty hard and just kind of threw me down.” It’s been hard to keep Resch down this season as he continues to be one of the busiest and most successful cowboys in the CCA. He’s doing doubleduty in riding broncs in open and novice categories. Leading up to the finals in the fall, Resch is sniffing at the top 10 in the open category and he’s among the top three broncriders in the novice division. “I did both last year, too,” he said. “I feel the more horses you get on, the better it is. More practice. Doing the novice and the open every rodeo, I’m already used to hopping on a bunch of horses. “Last year, I ended up winning every round at the (CCA) novice finals (in Yorkton, Sask.), and took first there.” Resch is making the most of his first year of pro, living the road-warrior lifestyle of cowboys in his trusty 1979 73-Ford truck. On many of those trips, he teams up with fellow Leader cowboy Jarryd Elsasser, who also competed in Halkirk and Sedgewick last weekend. Even before he graduated from high school in 2013, Resch knew the rodeo path was for him. “This is pretty much the summer,” he said. “It takes up most of your weekends. And during the week, you kind of work to pay for the weekends. “You make friends here that you see every weekend. Lots of my friends that I graduated

Resch and his CCA buddies are bound for Stettler this weekend for the Steel Wheel Stampede. Police charge woman in theft of home property John MacNeil

Review Reporter For a while last Wednesday morning, Aug. 20, it appeared as though the Coronation RCMP detachment had moved its base just down the street. Four police vehicles were parked outside a Norfolk Avenue residence, where they found “a large quantity” of outdoor and gardening property believed to have been stolen from local homeowners. “Maybe it’s a bit of an unusual sight for Coronation, but we didn’t have an unusually high number of police officers present for an operation like this,” said Sgt. Darcy McGunigal, the head of the Coronation detachment. “We had four officers on site.” RCMP arrested one of the home’s occupants, 36-year-old Connie Elizabeth Polege, and charged her with theft and possession of stolen property. Polege is scheduled to appear in Coronation provincial court on Nov. 14. Until then, she’s required to abide by conditions that include a curfew between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. “We seized a large quantity of items … general outdoor and gardening items,” Sgt. McGunigal said. “We’ve had a number of investigations into complaints recently about property being stolen from local yards ... around town.” Police executed the search warrant after gaining a key tip in their investigation the previous weekend. “There was some evidence we obtained, in particular, this past weekend that enabled us to apply for a search warrant earlier this week, and the search warrant was approved and granted by a justice of the peace for us to enter the property and search today,” Sgt. McGunigal said

Transportation Minister Wayne Drysdale was the guest speaker. The first phase was completed in 2009. The 142-kilometre pipeline brought potable water to the

communities of Halkirk, Castor, Veteran, Coronation and Consort and the counties of Paintearth, Stettler, and Special Areas 2, 3 and 4. The water is drawn from the Red Deer River and is treated at the Town of Stettler water-treatment facility. The total estimated cost of Phase 1 was $50 million and the total cost of Phase 2 and 3 is about $14 million. Further plans for extending the

line to South Buffalo Lake (Rochon Sands and White Sands) and farther north to the County of Camrose, villages of Rosalind and Bawlf, and west to the County of Lacombe, are planned for when funding becomes available. ‘What shall we do with what we know?’

by Rev. Barbara Zimmerman, Knox United Church, Castor Reflecting on various ways we know things and how our experiences shape us, I am aware that, in our community, it seems we have had way more than our fair share of knowing thrust on us these days. We have heard things lately that we never wanted to know. We have been told that two boys who grew up in this area (Castor) and attended our schools, played with our children, and visited our homes, are being charged with murders of the most cold and calculating kind. We have said, since last December, that we want to know what happened out there on the Klaus farm; and yet, now that evidence has been compiled and charges made, we don’t want to know that we have been so very wrong in our assumptions over the past 30 or 40 years. It is a spiritual dilemma! I remember a line from a movie I saw once. A devastated woman who has been through crisis says, “Now that I know what I know, I cannot go back. If I could, I would tear my eyes out so I may not see what I have seen. I would puncture my ear drums so I may not hear what I’ve heard. I do not want to know what I know.” But we do know that the police have laid charges of murder against two boys who grew up among us; two sons and grandsons of Castor people. We know, too, that they have families and friends who are devastated, who can never go back. One other fact we know is that they are not little boys anymore, even though that may be the picture that flashes into your mind when their names are said. But, no, they are adults, meant to take their place in a responsible world, and are therefore responsible for whatever they may have chosen to do or say — just like every other adult member of our community. But, what do we know from our experience of being followers of Christ? One thing has been proven both Biblically and historically: innocent people suffer. Innocent, good, people suffer and die at the hands of those who choose a dark path. Jesus was put to death by those who chose that for him. And yet, Jesus was made from — and made of — love. And love cannot be killed. And our experience of Jesus through scripture includes his great command-

ment: love one another … We, too, are created from love, and while we walk this earth, that is our primary commandment — to love. Now we have this horrific situation where our knowledge, based on the past, has collided with today’s new developments, and what are we to do? Well, based on the teachings of Christ, I would like to name three things we can and must do (three things that would be helpful and healthy), and three things we must not choose (three unhelpful, unhealthy, paths we should try to avoid).

The ‘do not-s’

Let’s start with the “do not-s”: Because there are two men charged, let’s not pit their families against each other: choosing sides, saying, “Oh he started it,” or “one forced bad choices on the other …” Let’s remember that these are two adult individuals who made their own choices about what or who would influence them. Choosing sides only aggravates an already unbearably painful experience for the community. And let’s not be too quick to place blame. There is an old saying that goes: “We cannot walk a mile in another’s shoes.” Jesus put it this way (and I paraphrase): “Let he who is completely without sin cast the first stone.” Blaming is unhelpful and unhealthy. And the third one almost goes without saying (I’ve said it so often before): we are not the judge. Let’s not set ourselves up as judges. That is not helpful or healthy. These three things would be the easiest things in the world for us to do. It feels so natural and normal to blame and to choose sides and to pass judgment. But, in the long run, these three are unhelpful for everyone involved, and unhealthy, not only for the community, but for our own hearts and souls.

The ‘do-s’

The “do-s” are harder. So let’s start with the easiest of those: pray! Take all your pain and all your frustration and fears and outrage to God. Pray for understanding in your own heart. Pray for peace, and calm, and a sense of trust to return to our community. Turn to ‘Try to be present’, Pg 5

‘Try to be present to those hurting’ Cont’d from Pg 4 Pray that pain will be eased for the families involved, and that true justice — God’s justice — will be served. Secondly, listen! Not only listening for God’s response in between our prayers, but — here’s the hard part — we need to listen to the stories and the cries of our friends and neighbours: those who have been hurt by these events. Be careful here! When I say listen to what others have to say, I mean listen as Jesus would listen: listen with patience and compassion, without judgment, with a sense of calm. Hear the stories. Hear the pain. Do not let yourself fall into the all-too-human unhelpful, unhealthy practice of responding with judgment or despair. That is very hard, but as Christians, it is not our place to heap anger upon anger or add despair to despair. It is our place to offer peace. Instead of judgment and blame, offer consolation and compassion in response to what you hear. You do not have to — nor is it possible to — fix anything. Any vengeful action, or prejudice, only adds more negative energy to an already devastatingly negative situation. As a rule of thumb, remember this: all human beings are created by God and

CoronAtion/StEttlEr, Ab

all deserve compassion from other human beings.

Helpful questions

Questions like these can be helpful when talking to those who are hurting: “Is there something I can do for you?” (Notice, I said “something” not “anything” — be specific); “Do you want company?” “Do you need someone to stand beside you?” (in court, for instance). These types of questions are used in the practice of a ministry of presence, and we should all try to be present to those who are hurting.

Helped him cry

I’m sure you’ve heard the story of the three-year-old who begged his mom to let him go see his elderly bereaved neighbour (a man devastated by the loss of his wife); and then, he just climbed up in the old man’s lap and sat there for a long time. Later, when his mother asked him what he had said to the man, he said, “I didn’t say anything Mommy. I just helped him cry.” Sometimes that is the most healthy, and helpful, thing we can do. Whatever you do in the coming weeks and months, remember, there are still flowers blooming, there are still friends and neighbours smiling and celebrating. The

air is still fresh and new every morning. Be kind to yourself, as well as others, in these days. Do not stop appreciating the

beauty you see, for God’s love is made visible in it. And, then — most importantly — let Jesus set the tone for all you

Coronation-area 4-H alumni accepted Healy Estate bursary scholarships during a presentation at the Coronation fair. in the back row (from left) are gerene Cole, bradley Schroeder and logan Kopas. in the front row (from left) are laura Davis, Paige Cole, Dallas Creasy, taylor Eno and brandy buxton. other recipients are listed in the story below. ECA Review/Submitted

4-H graduates earn Healy scholarships Submitted Coronation-area 4-H alumni received $40,000 worth of scholarships last week during the Coronation fair. The scholarships from the Healy Estate Bursary are in support of students’ post-secondary education pursuits. Among the recipients in attendance for the awards ceremony were Gerene Cole, Bradley Schroeder, Logan Kopas, Laura Davis, Paige Cole, Dallas Creasy, Taylor Eno and Brandy Buxton. Also awarded scholarships were Bettina Barnes, Blair Barnes, Jessica Buxton, Tyson Glazier, Jenna (Cole) Hanger, Claire Richardson, Evan Rodvang, Julia Scheffelmaier, Sasha Scheffelmaier, Jordan Schroeder, Katelyn Smith and Brendon Wakefield. The awards were made possible with an inheritance from Keith Healy in 1993 that he designated for 4-H members in the Coronation area. A committee of representatives of

the four clubs involved and a community member was formed and the bursary awards criteria was developed. The committee continues to review applications each year. Successful applicants must submit an application, essay and their 4-H diaries initially, and then send in their marks annually. Awards are given for any type of post-secondary education that meets the “generous criteria.” More than $130,000 has been awarded in the past three years. Clubs involved are the Brownfield Beef Club, Brownfield CRR Multi Club (the former Coronation Range Riders), Coronation Beef Club and the Talbot Sharp Edges 4-H Club. For further information, contact a member of the committee: Hugh McLarty (chair), Avis Buxton, Carol Funnell, Darolyn Black, Kurt Cole, Lynda Leuck, Jo-Ann Sieger, Yvonne Barnes and Carole Tkach (key leader).

Historians ‘happy, helpful’ Cont’d from Pg 7 The homemade dress was “all hand-stitched,” Young marvelled as she handed it over to appreciative community historians Bubbles Bullick, Karen Bridge and Janet Zimmer, all members of the Coronation museum committee. “They were very happy and very helpful,” she said of the reaction of the museum volunteers, who met with the visitors Thursday morning for the dress presentation. The sisters also perused old newspapers at the Review office and toured other points of interest in the Coronation area, where five of the family’s eight children were born. “They were born here in

Coronation, Silver Heights (and) Brownfield,” said the B.C.-born Young. “And our (maternal) grandparents are laid to rest at the Fairview cemetery, with our sister Stella. She died as a little girl.” Romey Young, born in Kansas City, was 60 in 1955 when he died while working for CN Railway in Kitimat, B.C. His Wales-born wife, Lilly Davies, later returned to Alberta and is buried in Wetaskiwin. She died in 1972 at the age of 74. Her wedding dress might not be the end of donations to Coronation from the Young descendants. “I have a few other items that’ll probably come (this way through time),” Young said.
