Coronation School golf team finished fifth at the 2014 Alberta Schools’ Association (ASAA) provincial championship in Cochrane Sept. 29 and 30. According to Doug Gardiner, golf coach at Coronation School, provincials were hosted by Cochrane High School but the tournament was actually held at two golf courses outside of Cochrane. “On the first day, we played Redwood Meadows Golf and Country Club and we shot a 243 and that gave us a shot at the bronze medal as we were only six shots behind the third place team,” said Gardiner. “We played River Spirit Golf Course on day two but the weather turned crappy. It was windy, cold and raining. It was the same conditions for

everyone but it really affected our game. Our number one golfer, Linden Heidecker, shot a 98 on day two so the weather definitely had an impact on his game.” The golf team ended up shooting a one-round, total score of 268 on day two causing the team to drop into fifth place. Gardiner discussed the calibre of golf at this year’s provincial championship. “The competition was really good and the team that won the title shot a 212 in that first round, 31 shots ahead of us, so they were a really good team,” Gardiner said. Coronation School’s golf team earned the right to compete at the provincial level after winning the zone championship, which took place at Silver Creek Golf and Country Club.

Decisions on Stettler schools configuration top priority for Clearview school trustees Brenda Schimke

News Reporter

“The status quo is not tenable; not okay; we have to do something”, said newlyappointed superintendent, Peter Barren, when speaking to the Stettler school situation at the board meeting of trustees on Oct. 9. In May 2013 a unanimous motion was passed by the then-board directing administration to analyze the potential benefits and implications of amalgamating in whole or in part all of the Stettler schools. With the departure of the elementary principal at the end of that school year, one principal has been in charge of the middle and elementary schools since Sept. 2013. High school and outreach have separate principals. The original flag that changes were necessary was that the middle and outreach schools in Stettler always had a deficit budget. “The situation in Stettler has been going on longer than any of us have been here, but we are the ones who are responsible,” said chairman Ken Checkel (Coronation/ Brownfield). “We don’t want to put the onus on principals or administrators, we are responsible for it because we can change it.”

Stettler Outreach

“When schools are under the banner of K-12, the funding issues relating to middle and outreach schools don’t show up,” said trustee Karen Holloway (Castor). Castor and Coronation do not have principal costs allocated to their outreach schools and their outreach schools run distance

learning and alternate learning programs that help their bottom lines. In Stettler, there is a separate principal and Wm E. Hay high school run the distance learning and alternate learning programs. “We’ve given no direction on how Wm E. Hay and Stettler outreach should work together’, said Checkel. “Financially they look so different because operationally they are run quite different,” concluded Holloway. Stettler Middle School Trustee Cheri Neitz (Donalda, Erskine) spoke to the problem that most feeder schools are configured with a junior high (Grs. 7 to 9) whereas Stettler has the middle school format (Grs. 6 – 8). A student coming to Stettler in grade 7 has to transition into the second year at middle school, a grade 10 student into second year at high school and a grade 9 student directly into high school. Botha school stopped offering grade 6 so that students could transfer into the first year of middle school. The fewer transitions for a student the better! “Middle school is a very pivotal age for kids and I think grade nines are lost in the shuffle in high school,” said trustee Staci Gerlitz (Stettler). “Educationally I feel the middle school model best serves the students, but funding wise it is probably the worst,” said trustee Dave Goodwin (Stettler). Goodwin also expressed concern about marginalizing grade 9 students by putting them into high school. Provincial curriculum, options, provincial achievement tests are all based on full-year not semester, so there are definite disadvantages. “Sporting wise not only does it put the

Newly-appointed education minister, Gordon Dirks, popped in for an unexpected visit at the Clearview school division offices on Oct. 8 while on his byelection campaign trail. Superintendent Peter Barron, when questioned the next day at the Clearview Board meeting, told trustees that the point was clearly made that there is a distinct difference between rural and urban school jurisdictions and that one size does not fit all. School boards and administrators are hopeful that Premier Prentice’s mandate to the education minister about the need for education funding to be sustainable and predictable be realized.

School visits

Wetter in May; Coronation and Brownfield in June, colony schools in Stettler County in March/April and colony schools in Paintearth in April/May 2015. Visits to schools will focus on talking with school leadership, staff and students about education priorities, successes schools have experienced in student learning and any barriers in moving the school division forward.

Erskine School acoustic remediation

Unanimous approval was given to hire Acoustic Solutions to undertake acoustics remediation at Erskine School in the amount of $45,000.

Strategic Action Plan

Clearview trustees approved the draft three-year strategic action plan. It will now be taken to school leaders for their feedback. Final approval will be given in November.

“One of the main jobs that a trustee has is to understand our schools so that we can make better decisions,” said Trustee Karen Holloway when speaking in favour of having as many trustees as possible attend each school visit. School visits by trustees planned Drumheller – Stettler Progressive Conservative Association for the 2014-15 school year are: Erskine and Donalda in Jan. 2015; Big Valley and Byemoor in 2:00 – 4:00 pm at Hanna Senior Circle Feb.; Stettler elementary and 519 3 Ave W, Hanna, AB middle schools in For further information please contact March; Wm. grade 9s in turmoil, it causes troubles with grades 10, 11, and 12,” said trustee Yvette Cassidy (Big Valley/Erskine). Grade 9 students miss out on collegiate sports with other schools in the district that have a junior high setup, and there is a large physical difference between grade 9s and grade 12s playing on the same teams. “There is a huge, huge disconnect from rural schools, said Cassidy. “If they come for grade 9 they get an opportunity to take French and band, but they lose their friends.” Kids coming into Stettler in grade 10 feel uncomfortable joining either program because they are a year behind their contemporaries.

Shared facilities

“When I see a library in every school (in Stettler), it drives me crazy”, said Cassidy. “I don’t like the separation.” “We have an example of the middle schools’ shop area being too small for their needs, whereas the high school’s CTS wing easily could accommodate both middle and high school classes,” said Neitz. “The gym in the middle school is another example where it is too small, but the high school gym could possibily be used instead.” Trustee Neitz noted that governments are basing more of their funding decisions on sharing and cooperation, and pointed to the current efforts to get a new gym at the middle school. Without a joint-use/ funding agreement with the town and/or county, funding approval will likely never happen.

Competition

Many trustees spoke to the lack of team work and sharing (teachers, resources, spaces) between the Stettler schools and the need for principals to work as a team, not as individuals. “Parents don’t see competition between schools or outreach and if parents don’t

see it, then we as administration need to eliminate it,” said Goodwin. “There is no mechanism right now to produce an overall vision of what we want to do within Stettler schools,” said chairman Checkel. “By virtue of the current structure, it promotes competition. It’s been going on so long that it’s become a cultural thing.” Trustee Goodwin lobbied for sharedadministration to be off the table, but he was overruled. The general consensus is ‘everything is on the table’! Trustee Cassidy summed up the discussion by saying, “at the end of all of this, the board must do what is best financially and educationally and commit to it.” The board will consult with staff, parents and students before reaching any conclusions.

Hamlet of Mirror poised for future growth Lisa Joy

Review Reporter The tiny Hamlet of Mirror is poised for future growth and Lacombe County is laying the groundwork that could serve as a template for other hamlets including Tees and Joffre. “We need to create opportunities and I would go one step further and say if we can build a template in this hamlet would there be anything wrong in going this direction with other hamlets as well, create opportunities in all other hamlets, Tees, and Joffre,” said Lacombe County Coun. Brenda Knight at the county’s regular meeting Oct. 9. Likewise, Coun. Rod McDermand agreed. “I like this as a template for other hamlets. We have to encourage (growth) and that we are open for business,” he added. Coun. Ken Wigmore questioned what chance developers will come along if the county opens Mirror up. Dale Freitag, Manager of Planning Services for the county, said, “If we open this up there is a chance a developer will come along.” In 2003 Mirror rescinded its village status in favour of becoming a

hamlet in Lacombe County. Since then the county has been working with the community on the Hamlet of Mirror Area Structure Plan (ASP) and adopted one in 2007. It was updated in 2008 and is being reviewed now with it finished in 2015. The county sees numerous economic opportunities expected to contribute to Mirror’s growth including its central location and access to a large population along the QEII. In addition, there’s an increased interest in small town living. The updated ASP includes a mobile home district with homes not older than 10 years allowed, country residential lots with a minimum size of .5 acres and maximum of one acre and allowance for single detached dwellings and secondary suites. The commercial area near Hwy 50 and 50 Ave. will be designated for neighbourhood convenience, personal services, such as offices, banks and retail stores. The commercial area adjacent Hwy 21 will be set aside for those who need larger amounts of land and servicing the travelling public, such as motels, truck stops, automotive and equipment services and service stations. The ASP calls for the county to

revitalize Mirror’s main street with planters, banners, historical plaques and street furniture. In addition, the county will work with Boomtown Trails in their Community Transformation Initiative, which selected the Hamlet of Mirror as a participating community. A campground and recreation area was included in the updated ASP. One issue facing the county with developing Mirror is infrastructure. “A part of the problem is it’s an inefficient utility system because it’s over a large geographic area,” Terry Hager County Commissioner said. “It’s difficult to accumulate reserves to do any work. We’re frustrated by that.” Coun. Ken Wigmore said, “When does the county pony up and start improving service lots or lots that are there? Are we talking millions or do we do it over 10 years? If we don’t start some place it will never happen,” added Coun. Wigmore. “The day will come to pony up,” agreed Coun. Knight. Coun. Knight suggested the county put in a deferred service agreement in Mirror similar to what they did in Sylvan Lake. “If we could have those options now with deferred service

agreements we wouldn’t lay a bunch of cash out and hope someone comes along. Then we could find out if the growth would happen. I would struggle laying millions in the ground hoping they come.” Coun. Barb Shepherd said

this is an opportunity for the county to develop a plan “to locate businesses here.” The county set a public meeting at the Mirror Community Hall on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. to bring draft ASP to the area residents for feedback.

Vicious dogs in Stettler have tasted blood Brenda Schimke

News reporter

County administration have been directed to review and bring back to council a strengthened county dog by-law dealing with vicious dogs that have attacked another domestic animal, adult or child. Wanda Webster and Brandy Vasseur attended the Oct. 8 Stettler county council meeting to give a first-hand account of the incident that occurred on Webster’s rural property on Sept. 15. Two un-collared pit bulls, owned by Stettler residents, had wandered onto Webster’s private property, attacked and killed their family pet, a chocolate lab. They had also attacked Webster when attempting to rescue her dog. By the next day, these dogs had been released back to the owners. The current county bylaw does not have a provision allowing animal control personnel to hold the animal(s) until a proper assessment has been made by a qualified person or a court has ordered the animal(s) put down. “We have vicious dogs in Stettler that have tasted blood, the likelihood is they will kill again,” said a shaken Webster. “I have young children,” said Brandy, “we’re afraid for them to play in the yard at grandma’s place anymore.” The children are afraid too, we had an instance this past weekend where the kids were playing in the yard, heard/saw something and ran screaming for the house,” said Webster. The owners of the pit bulls will be in court in Stettler on Oct. 23 at 10 a.m.

Wireless service

Industry Canada has a 50/50 costsharing grant available to upgrade the high speed internet capacity in areas of rural Canada that are unserved or underserved. Stettler county is eligible for accessing these funds. Currently there are four companies courting the county to become partners. Ponoka county is probably the best served rural area in the province, but they invested over $1 million to fund a series of towers.

Gravel contract

Council approved a five-year contract with James Marshall Trucking Ltd. to supply, haul and surface gravel in the amount of $4.16 million. The

total estimated quantity of gravel to be supplied under this tender is 250,000. Although a publically-tendered contract, only one bid was received. A provision was also approved to extend the contract to a maximum of another five years subject to negotiation and mutual acceptance.

Parkland Regional Library

Unanimous support was given to approve the county’s portion to fund the 2015 Parkland regional library budget. “We couldn’t function as a Stettler library without Parkland’s support as they provide the much-needed technical support,” said Coun. Les Stulberg.

Rodeo windup

The rodeo and concert were well received although the bottom line was not financially positive, directors were told at their Sept. 11 rodeo windup meeting. The board is looking at new ideas and welcoming any input to help make the rodeo more successful next year.

Protective services

This past month there were a total of nine complaints investigated by Protective Services including road damage, missing/damaged signs, speeding abandoned vehicle and trailer, dog attack and pipeline gas leak (Newalta area). There were a total of eight enforcement actions for speeding, driver documents and general traffic bylaw offences

(parking trailer on highway, abandoned vehicle). The worse example of speeding was a driver clocked at 146 kms/hr in a 100-km zone on highway 835 south of Erskine.

Remarkable lack of knowledge Dear Editor, I found it very telling recently that none of the mainstream, national media apparently took note of the fact that Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau didn’t know what Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty was during an interview on October 8. He had to ask the reporter what Article 5 is. This agreement states very simply that an attack on any one member of NATO is considered an attack on all members. While it offers great protection for NATO member countries like Canada, it also comes with significant responsibility. For someone who insists they are able to lead a country, this shows a remarkable lack of knowledge which verges on

Stettler purchases valuable lifesaving piece of equipment Brenda Schimke

News Reporter

A unanimous motion was passed at the Stettler town council meeting on Oct. 7 to purchase a thermal image camera and accessories for $19,121 from Wholesale Fire & Rescue Ltd. (WFR), the lowest of two bidders. Final purchase is dependent on the County of Stettler approving their portion of the cost. Coun. Malcolm Fischer experienced first-hand the difference between the old camera and the newer version. “The room was thick with smoke, and the clarity of vision was very impressive,” said Fischer. “The camera is definitely a valuable lifesaving piece of equipment.”

Less money from gas tax fund

Stettler received notification from Municipal Affairs that their 2014 allocation from the gas tax fund will be $312,000, down $13,000 from last year. CAO Greg Switenky explained that although the federal and provincial governments both put more money into the pot, because the formula is populationbased and other communities are growing faster than ours, we got less. More flexibility has been built into the program. In addition to roads and underground services, funds can now be applied to recreational, amateur sport, cultural infrastructure, regional and local airports, broadband connectivity, disaster mitigation infrastructure and brownfield redevelopment.

Skateboard park

“The skateboard park was opened on Sept. 13 and is already a well-used facility with estimates of between 50 and 200 kids using it daily,” said Switenky. “An official opening will be scheduled for spring when the donor plaques are installed. Landscaping will continue through the fall and all areas will be seeded. “Connecting pathways have been finished with Quincy Schowalter Concrete donating the north pad. Communities in Bloom

The town of Stettler received a 5-bloom rating and a special mention for Project: Walk ‘N’ Roll during the 2014 National symposium and awards ceremonies in Charlottetown, PEI. Stettler also received an outstanding achievement award for the Natura tidiness award. Rob Spencer, chairman of the committee, was at the meeting to thank Council for sponsoring his and his wife’s trip to participate in the Charlottetown event. “It was a tremendous experience to attend this year’s event as it was the 20th anniversary of Communities in Bloom,” said Spencer. “ It’s invaluable being able to share back and forth with other communities about what they are doing to improve community sustainability, social value and quality of life. Spencer mentioned his future emphasis is to engage more residents to become involved in the program. The more people we get involved to champion these initiatives, the more things we can do,” said Spencer. Coun. Bachman, on behalf of council and the citizens of Stettler, thanked Spencer and his committee for all the good work they do.

Parkland Library budget

Approval was given to the Parkland Regional library 2015 budget representing a three per cent increase. The total cost to Stettler is $1,322 based on the town’s population of 5,748. The summer village of White Sands is now a member of the Parkland Regional Library and has designated their portion of the rural grant and book allotment, $810, to the Stettler Library.

Airport signage

Coun. Karen Sernecky indicated the airport committee is looking at painting a 5’ by 22’ sign on the flying club tank to welcome people who fly into the Stettler airport.

Coronation School junior Angels defeated the Theresetta Knights in junior girls volleyball action on Wednesday, Oct. 8. The Angels soared to a straight sets victory over the Knights winning the first set 25-20 and the second set 25-8. The Angels started out slowly scoring the first eight points but the Knights came right back to keep the game close. Both teams battled hard and exchanged points but the Knights couldn’t overcome the strong serves from Angels player Koryn Duncan. “I think we played well but we came out a little rusty to start the game,” said Angels head coach Dave Duncan. “But then the girls got back to playing normal volleyball.” The Angels came out quickly to start the second set, scoring the first nine points. The Knights were able to mount a small comeback but the Angels sailed to the easy 25-9 victory. “We never gave up the lead in the second set and sailed to the easy win,” said Duncan. “Usually, the girls start out slow and then find their groove. Once they start having fun, they start to do pretty good.” “I was pleased with today’s win. The girls played hard but more importantly, all of the girls played and they all had fun.” This was the Angels first league game of the season but Duncan shared his expecta-

Cont’d from Pg 1 “The boys did exceptionally well as they won our zone. I believe there were 15 teams and we finished first. “It was a combined score and the way they worked it was they took the three best combined scores on each hole and we shot a one-round, total score of 245,” Gardiner said. “The boys shot really well during zones and we were led by Heidecker, who shot a 75. Heidecker ended up second overall out of approximately 100 golfers.” Gardiner admitted that the school hasn’t had a team go to provincials since the late 1980’s, so he was really proud of this year’s team. “This season probably ranks amongst the best seasons we have ever had and this was probably the second best group of kids I have had as a golf coach. This was a really excellent season and a season the kids can look back on for many years to come,” said Gardiner. “It was a very successful season but from my perspective, I was just happy to see the boys accomplish what they did. Winning zones was definitely a highlight, but coming fifth at provincials is probably the biggest highlight of the entire golf season.”

Common sense firearms measures Leon Benoit, Member of Parliament for Vegreville-Wainwright, welcomed the introduction of the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act by Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney on Tuesday. “Our Government has always been committed to red tape reduction and providing safe and simple firearms policies,” said Benoit. “This legislation will deliver on our commitments to lawful gun owners and public safety.” The new legislation would make amendments to the Firearms Act as well as the Criminal Code, and would: - Create a six-month grace period at the end of the five-year licence period to stop people from immediately becoming criminalized for paperwork delays around license renewals; - Streamline the licensing system by eliminating the Possession Only Licence (POL) and converting all existing POLs to

Possession and Acquisition Licences (PALs); - Make classroom participation in firearms safety training mandatory for first-time licence applicants; - Amend the Criminal Code to strengthen the provisions relating to orders prohibiting the possession of firearms where a person is convicted of an offence involving domestic violence; - End needless paperwork around Authorizations to Transport by making them a condition of a licence for certain routine and lawful activities; - Provide for the discretionary authority of Chief Firearms Officers to be subject to limit by regulation, ensuring the firearms program is applied fairly across the country; - Authorize firearms import information sharing between the Canada Border Services Agency and the RCMP when

restricted and prohibited firearms are imported into Canada by businesses; and, - Allow the Government to have the final say on classification decisions, following the receipt of independent expert advice. “Changes to the Criminal Code, as well as the classification regime would enable the Government to take steps to ensure the rights of law-abiding gun owners are respected,” explained Benoit. Benoit noted that he is looking forward to seeing the legislation go up for debate in the House. “We have a clear record through nine years of government on standing up for our farmers, hunters and sport-shooters. Ours is a balanced approach – protecting the safety of Canadians while, at the same time, providing clarity to the firearms regime and reducing the administrative burden for farmers, hunters and sport-shooters.”

Bashaw Pistol Club gets okay from Lacombe County Lisa Joy

Review Reporter Lacombe County council unanimously approved the Bashaw Pistol Club development application to continue its range. Doug Orom, representing the club, told county council at its Oct. 9 Municipal Planning meeting that they follow strict rules set out by the National Firearms Association (NFA). “It’s a recreational facility,” he said. The pistol only gun range is on the northwest portion of NW 29-4021-W4M and is open to the public seven days a week from May to October. Access to the range is off Range Road 21-5, which becomes a dead end and there are no residences on the quarter section of land. The nearest residence is a quarter mile south of Range Road 21-5. All members must have a firearms permit and license to become a member. The Bashaw Pistol Club hosts a shoot once a month with a certified range officer present.

Berni Kuntz, Development Officer for Lacombe County, told council that over the many years of the range’s existence only a couple of complaints were received from one landowner, who has since moved, that the noise was scaring their animals. The county gave the Bashaw Pistol Club nine conditions with the approval, including pay the county $133 for a rural sign on the property, access to the parcel is to be graveled, parking for the range must be contained onsite and the hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. May to November.

County tackles bad internet service

Lacombe County wants to see improved Internet service to the eastern portions and is working with CCI Wireless to make this happen. County council, at its Oct. 9 regular meeting, voted in favour of giving CCI Wireless a letter of support for its Industry Canada grant application to enhance rural broadband service.

Tim Timmons, Manager of Corporate Services for the county, told council that a consultant specializing in broadband service, hired by Lacombe County, did a survey and the overwhelming response from Haynes, Tees, Joffre, and those south of Clive say they aren’t pleased with the level of Internet service. An application for provincial grant funding was denied so now the hopes are with CCI Wireless and its federal grant application. The federal government recently announced its $305 million Connecting Canadians Grant Program, aimed at enhancing high speed broadband to an additional 280,000 homes in rural communities over the next five years. Coun. Brenda Knight said she strongly urges cell providers to cohabitate towers. There are no budget implications for the county at this time but they set aside $250,000 in the 2014 capital budget for a broadband initiative.

Get a job in the oil patch Now you know a bit more about the oil patch, how do you get a job? There’s an entire industry built around a single word. There are people out there that offer complete courses, books, seminars, and even camps to help you get there. That magic word? Motivation. To motivate you is to provide a motive, or reason for you to do something. Websters defines ‘motive’ (in part) as: “something (as a need or desire) that causes a person to act” You see people in every profession that make wads of money doing a job that they love, and many of them came from the poorest of families and started out with nothing. It obviously can be done. What’s the difference between you and the most successful people out there? Why do some people have better jobs or make more money than others? Why are some people phenomenally successful, while others flip burgers? Why do some people get all the promotions while others stay at the bottom of the ladder? It all comes down to motivation. Plain and simple. These people saw something that they wanted, and they went out and got it... and when they failed, they got up and tried again. Why did they keep trying after they failed a couple of times, instead of giving up or putting it off ‘till tomorrow’? Because they had a motive to succeed. For every goal, you need something

that gets you excited about accomplishing that goal--something that drives you to succeed every moment of every day. • A few examples of goals: • Start your own business • Work on an oil rig • Become an engineer • Save enough money to retire at 50 • Learn a new language A few examples of motives for success: • The desire to provide a better life for your family • The desire to spend more time with family • The desire to provide the best education for your children • The desire to get out of debt • The desire to be popular with people • The desire for steady, secure employment • The desire for respect or admiration • The desire to do a job that you consider important • The desire for more free time It doesn’t really matter what motivates you to accomplish something, as long as it works. You don’t need to tell anyone what it is that really drives you. Maybe your sole motivation for becoming the CEO of a fortune 500 company is to make your mom proud, or to prove that your 5th grade teacher was wrong, or to spite your ex-girlfriend. As long as it’s enough to motivate you to keep putting 100% of your effort into accomplishing your goal, every day. Turn to Hundreds, Pg 14

A Guide to Careers in Oil & Gas

Hundreds of ‘motivational speakers’ Cont’d from Pg 13 Write down all of the things that motivate you to succeed in the things that you do, and every time you notice yourself getting distracted from your goals, sit down and go over your motives. For those that are motivationally challenged, there are hundreds of ‘motivational speakers’ out there, as well as goalsetting workshops, seminars, and books everywhere you look. The rest of this article will focus on the goal of getting a job in the oil patch. Getting a job in the oil industry is like getting a job anywhere else... If you want a good job, you can’t sit around waiting for it to fall into your lap. It’s like losing weight or quitting smoking or learning another language or becoming a brain surgeon. If you want it bad enough, and you’re willing to do whatever it takes to get it, then it’s as good as yours already. While you’re looking for work, make a full time job out of it. Spend a few hours every day faxing resumes, making phone calls, and responding to job postings online and in local newspapers. Persistence will get you a job. Before you start, you need to decide which industry field(s) you are interested in working in. Will it be a trade that you already know? A seismic driller’s helper position? Maybe seismic or legal surveying? There is a wealth of information on all of these fields on the internet. A bit of research in the beginning could save you years of moving between jobs that you don’t like. Next, make a list of reasons that an employer should hire you. List your strengths, skills and talents, qualifications, interests, and other traits that make you the best candidate. Now take that list and rephrase all of the features to show a benefit to your employer. For example, ‘Emergency First Aid Certificate’ is a feature that should appear in your resume. ‘Certified to provide emergency first aid assistance’ is a benefit to your employer that should appear in your cover letter. Cover letter and resume format and design are beyond the scope of this article --There are hundreds of pages online that deal specifically with resumes and cover letters, and have many tips and tutorials available. Prepare a semi-generic cover letter for each of the industry fields that you have chosen, leaving the recipient’s name blank. The idea is to re-focus the letter to show the benefits of your skills in another industry field. You may also choose to use the same cover letter for every employer. For any company that is high on your list of favorite prospective employers, you may want to create a separate cover letter and follow up letter that emphasizes your desire to work for that specific company, and shows that you are educated about the company and their operations. Fax machines may seem really old fashioned, but most companies still find a use for them. They’re a lot more likely to look at a paper resume than an email resume. If you don’t have the yellow pages from an oil active city, you can find them at your local library or online. Another excellent resource for Canadian companies is the Canadian Oilfield Service and Supply Directory. It’s a yellow pages style book that can be found in most motel rooms in Alberta. It’s also available at www.cossd.com.

If you have experience in the Be sure that every cover position that you’re applying letter sent is properly for, and depending on current addressed to the company it is oilfield activity, you may find being sent to. If you know the several companies that want person’s name, use it. to hire you on the first day of Otherwise, “Dear Sir/ your job search. If this is the Madam,” is the standard case, you can afford to be a bit acceptable opening. more picky about the position Spell check EVERYTHING and wage that you accept. that you sent to any potential Don’t stall too long though, or employers. the position will be filled by Turn to Your personality, Pg 15 someone else.

First aid certification can be obtained from several places, such as the Red Cross organization, or through St. John Ambulance. An ATV Safety course may also be required if you’re working in a field that makes extensive use of off-road vehicles, such as surveying or seismic exploration. Many of the training courses and certifications that are required for work in this industry are not exclusive to the oil industry. Relevant courses can be taken in nearly any city. Check your local yellow pages for training centers.

Your personality trumps any of these points

Cont’d from Pg 14 Things that will help you get a job: • A couple of previous employers as references • Any recent safety training from a recognized instructor-- such as WHMIS, H2S, or First Aid • Any oilfield experience • Experience outside of the oil industry in a similar position to the one you’re applying for • Do you know anyone that is in a position to help you find a job? (Like the field personnel manager of a major oil drilling company?) Maybe you know someone else that does. One of the best ways to get a good job is by knowing someone... If you know someone who can help, ask them • Be drug-free. Many companies conduct pre-employment drug screenings and random testing of employees Things that will hinder your job search: • An incomplete resume • Spelling and grammatical errors on your resume or cover letter • Many short periods of employment on your resume. They aren’t going to spend money to train you if you’re going to quit in a week. • Long periods of unemployment • Unfavorable references from previous employers • No driver’s license • Living too far away from an active oil area • Applying for jobs during the slow season while companies are struggling to provide work for their current employees

Egyptians used a process called embalming to preserve people’s bodies. It took a long time and had many steps.

What is a mummy? A mummy is a dead body that has been preserved. When people die, the body usually begins to decay. Soft parts, such as the skin and other organs, soon rot away. But in mummies, the body does not decay. Sometimes the bodies were preserved on purpose. Other times, the body is preserved by accident. It might have been frozen, left in a very dry place or even covered by a peat bog.

This mystifying mummy is trying to trick you. Can you separate fact from fiction? Follow the mummy’s wrappings to check your mummy memory.

Making hay when the sun don’t shine Agri-News When dealing with forage put up under less than ideal moisture time is of the essence. “Cool and wet fall weather is great for pasture recovery and for easing forages into dormancy, but not so good for drying hay,” says Linda Hunt, forage specialist, Alberta Ag-Info Centre, Stettler. “It’s not uncommon for fall conditions in the central and northern areas of the province to be too cool and wet to allow the swath to get down to the ideal 15-18 per cent moisture. So what do you do when your second cut is on the ground and it is too dry to silage but too wet for hay?” Hunt says the short answer is to salvage what can be salvaged and feed it quickly. “The big advantage we have in Canada is the cool fall temperatures give us some grace to bale forage up tough and still come out okay. It’s sort of like storing your salad in the fridge rather than on the counter. The cooler temperatures can slow down the rate of spoilage giving you a chance to get the forage fed while there is still value. It’s definitely not the ideal situation, and is highly dependent on the weather, but it is a useful strategy when snow is in the forecast.” Forage baled between 18-35 per cent is highly variable and unpredictable so should be fed first and with caution, advises Hunt. “Wet warm bales provide an ideal habitat for bacteria and mold growth, and it is the activity of the mold and bacteria that

cause the bales to heat. Protein in bales that reach 50 degrees Celsius or higher lose their value as the protein is converted to a form that is unavailable to livestock. The cool fall temperatures reduce the amount of heat produced in the bale by slowing down the activity of the bacteria and mold, as well as cooling the bales faster and keeping them from reaching the critical 50 degrees Celsius.” So use the assets that living in a northern climate provide, says Hunt. Ag Info Centre beef forage specialist Ken Ziegler suggests “only putting 900 lbs of feed into the space of a 1200 bale. When the bale is popped out of the baler, you will be able to slip you hand into the side of the bale quite far and quite easily compared to a tightly made bale. This allows the moisture to exit easier and the heat to dissipate.”

Line bales up in north-south rows to minimize the exposure to the sun, says Hunt, and increase the surface area exposed to the westerly fall winds. “Leave a 4-6 inch gab between bales within the row, Tri-Ag Tri-Ag Implements t Implements Tri-Ag Implements orrt l cial Pfa iaelciae cYour Tri-Ag Implements Implements Tri-Ag Implements Don’t Gamble With Your Livelihood or Life! p pseS p S and space the rows far apart to Tri-Ag S s l l t t f s f Tri-Ag Implements r Tri-Ag Implements r l o t o f ia ia Tri-Ag Implements o ia k c eee krW h cep ee kc Pa Ptha r e psea WP rfec lo W0 eeS eS th ia 0f2 rrt ciae cp tPsfo f 1,32o0 s1ee,k3S 2op 2otth ea f 13 ,8krr increase circulation and M a8 arrLife! fo 2 Pfo S 2e1kr e -2 e We WP Make Safety A WayMOf -2 tpseeaS e -2 W0 f 3tPs e 1ea 8 1rfo r3W o tefsekSop e,3 121 th h kr 0 r th ra ch cM h 2Pa f Off 0a1 f r2th rfo c f f , P 2 a W eh r fo 2 , a O c e O W e 3 2 f -2 -2 1 e 0 M 18 18-2 for thfor th2fo 0r f %l 5% enhance cooling.
