All in the family for 4-H champions John MacNeil

Review Reporter As always, it was a family affair for the Doolaege clan last week at the Coronation District 4-H Show and Sale in Consort. Castor cousins and Paintearth 4-H Beef Club members Kallista (Kalli) Doolaege and Cassandra (Cassie) Doolaege were in the winners’ circle June 4 as the two-day show closed at Consort Sportex. Kallista earned top honours for the grand champion steer, while Cassandra entered the reserve champion steer. Both girls are 15 years old and Grade 9 students at Theresetta Catholic School in Castor. “I was surprised,” Kallista said minutes after receiving the grand-champion award. “When we had all 20 steers in (the show ring), I didn’t know. I had no idea (who might win). They all looked really good.” And they were entertaining, too.

“Extremely intense,” a smiling Cassandra said of her entry. “My calf wouldn’t really stand good, but it was fun. A cool experience.” Along with Paintearth, clubs represented at the district show were Altario, Brownfield, Coronation and the host Consort 4-H Beef Club. On three occasions in his closing remarks, the judge complimented the finalists for raising “just an outstanding set of steers.” The 4-H members were rewarded for doing their homework. “I brushed my calf every night after school, for the past three months,” Cassandra said. “Mostly when the snow starts to melt, then you can be out there easier, because it’s not as cold.” Kallista added: “Whenever you have a second, or 10 minutes or so, you just go out there.” The Doolaege cousins, whose birthdays

are just a month apart, farm south of Castor. Both have had siblings involved in 4-H, as well as cousins from Consort. Kallista and Cassandra have been active in 4-H for six years, since they were in Grade 4. They say it’s taught them even more than the tricks of the agricultural trade. “With 4-H, the motto is Learn to do by Doing,” said Kallista, whose school activities include badminton. “Your parents can’t help you, so you have to do it all by yourself at the show, for sure. “In public-speaking, I got third in regionals this year. You learn so much from (that experience). It’s really annoying to write the speech, but it pays off in the end.” Kallista followed older brothers Benjamin and Matthew into 4-H. Matthew has since graduated, but he was back at the show last week to offer his support, as was eldest sibling Cody and his wife.

Cassandra’s 4-H family includes older sister Riki and younger brothers Spencer and Kelton. Cassandra is also busy on the sports front. She plays hockey, club volleyball and multiple school sports — basketball, badminton and volleyball. She still finds time for 4-H, and enjoys the camaraderie among members. “You get a lot of friendships, there’s camps, and public-speaking is really good,” Cassandra said. “Even just learning to do the books and taming a calf, you learn all that.” The Doolaege girls said they didn’t necessarily have names for their calves, but were open to suggestions. Kallista chose Fred as a moniker for her grand champion. Barney — Fred’s buddy in the Flintstones — might be a good bet for Cassandra’s reserve champion.
