Lucas Latimer of the Consort Comets takes a shot on net at the Jan.4 game against the Coronation Royals. The Royals won with a 4-2 victory over the Comets.

Stettler RCMP and EMS responded to a 911 call reporting that a male had been shot in the northwest area of the town of Stettler at 4:47 p.m. on Dec. 31, according to RCMP press release. Investigators arrived to find the 37 year old man suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital by STARS air ambulance with serious, non-life threatening injuries. Eyewitnesses reported that there was a collision between two vehicles prior to the Bauer shooting. Shots were fired and the shooter was last seen driving away in a blue Dodge pick up truck. Castor Ag Society - Debt retirement on hall progressing by Helen Pickles Happy New Year to everyone! Special thanks to all the people who have made donations in the past year to the Castor & District Ag Society to help pay down the debt on the Castor Community Hall. Your donations have been greatly appreciated. Over the past five years this Ag Society has paid a total of $206,362 to the town towards debt retirement and have a debt remaining of $204,416. The 2014 rodeo was a hit even though it had to be re-scheduled because of inclement weather. The Fair was great and had more participants enter their items. The Ag Society hosted a free pancake breakfast. The Ag Society donated $500 scholarships to 11 recipients furthering their education. The Farmer’s Market held successful markets and served a luncheon at each. The first market for the new year will be March 5, 2015. Please call Kelsey Seth, our new manager to book a table. The ‘famous’ light pole at the hall did

not get moved as was planned but is scheduled to be move in the spring of 2015. We received a Community Enhancement Grant and are waiting word from the Ag Initiatives Grant applied for. These monies are to purchase a floor scrubber for the hall. We also ordered 275 new place setting and cutlery that should be arriving soon with donation monies from Castor Little Theatre and a Community Enhancement grant. We made some money from our fundraiser, the raffle that was drawn on Dec. 11 with winners: Side by Side and trailer Joe Bell, Castor; 500 Quad - Jim and Cheryl Moore, Mirror; small Quad Roxanne Bolt, Coronation; $1,000 - Bob Long, Coronation; and $500 - Debbi Taylor, Coronation. The agricultural society and it’s committees are always looking for volunteers to help organize and promote the many community events in Castor and donations are always welcome. The executive was re-elected at the annual meeting: Tony Nichols, president;

Apache Canada Foreman, Shell Roste, made a special visit to the Coronation Food Bank to present Diane Schmidt, Food Bank Coordinator, with a $1,000 donation. Apache is proud to support local programs in the areas which we live and operate in.

The Castor and Area Food Bank was pleased to see Apache Canada Lead Operator, Jeff Ensign, who stopped by to present a cheque to Susan Goodkey, Food Bank Coordinator. Apache happily contributed $1000 towards food costs.

Henry Michielsen, Dave Kneller, Brian Spady, Doug Zimmerman, Kelsey Seth and Lisa Bagshaw. Have a great 2015!

them. With family still living in that small town my connection to the ongoing need for growth in our rural areas has always been close to mind. I don’t think there is anyone from my Ontario days who ever thought I’d be where I am today- miles away from family and close friends. In the past my father has said “Out of all of you kids, your mother and I always thought you’d be the one to stick close to home.” To be honest, so did I. Moving all alone to a new place, with new people and new surroundings to get to know is both exciting and scary. It takes a lot of courage. Just like it takes a lot of courage to approach a stranger and say ‘hello’. I say a lot of hellos in my day and it’s nice when people approach me. So if you see me out at events or around town make sure to say hi, it’s important to me to get to know the people in the communities I work for. If you have something you’d like me to write about or investigate a little more let me know. You can email me, call me, or tell me when you see me. I look forward to meeting you, Beth

place that taught me a lot. It was there in a small coffee shop, that I jumped at the chance to work with a talented editor who fueled my desire to write. And it was there that my writing career began. I’m a sincere person who believes in equality and fairness, with a passion for the environment and nature. I love to learn about people, places and the substance that makes them what they are. I’ve fought some tough battles in my life, both for myself and for other people. So please know that your opinion counts to me. I’ve taken the opportunity to travel Alberta from north to south, east to west. I take the back roads, getting dusty and dirty while I get to know her landscape and the people and animals that call it home. I continue to find myself surprised by our Alberta and the people that bring her alive. Small towns along the way are what keep Alberta connected. Getting to know them are important to me. My grandparents lived on a farm outside a small town, where I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time. I feel deeply connected to the farmers, the land, their families and the people who surround

The year to re-connect Beth Causley

Review Reporter Our world is forcing us to become detached from other human beings. Online schooling and shopping, bank machines, self checkouts, ear phones to block out the world and facebook with our five hundred and twenty-two ‘friends’. All of it is helping human interaction to slowly slip away from us. The modern day conveniences that allow us to do things anonymously are allowing us to avoid unwanted communications. Have a higher-thanyou-can-afford bill that needs to be paid? Do it at the bank machine and no one is the wiser. Need to order a pair of pants in a much larger size? Do it over the internet and you’ll save yourself a most awkward conversation with the sales help at the store. Too embarrassed to go back to school? Do it online and no one will know how old you are or how many questions you ask. Can’t be bothered to get off the couch to meet a friend? Spend 15 minutes texting with them instead. By doing these things, without talking to another person face to face, the internet and mobile telecommunications are destroying the meaningfulness of contact with others. Those small interactions in life help to keep us grounded, keep us connected to our society and that can’t be simulated on line. Yet.

The world with little human interaction leaves us isolated, focused on ourselves and forgetting about the people around us. The shooting in Stettler and other recent events have reminded us that even we are not sheltered from the pains of the world. We live in small communities where it’s essential to know our neighbours and other recurring people that make up our everyday world. Studies have proven that faceto-face interaction comforts us and provides us with some important sense of wellbeing. We need to rekindle the quality of our interactions. 2015 should be the year to reconnect, a year for human interaction. The simple act of acknowledging someone on the sidewalk is an easy beginning. Go into the bank, pay for your gas at the counter, put the iPhone down, take the ear phones out of your ears and start noticing the people around you. While the smiley icons we attached to the text or email we sent to our friend is nice, it hardly compares to their smiling eyes and toothy grin we get sitting across from them. So at the start of this new year my resolution is to re-connect and do more things face to face. We need to see each other, even for the small stuff. Because don’t forget: it’s the small things that count. Happy new year everyone.

Succession Planning has been earmarked by the Agricultural Industry as one of the sector's biggest challenges to be addressed over the next decade due to demographics and the number of farms that will transfer. The potential financial and emotional consequences of transferring the farm could have a significant impact on the farm family dynamic. NEW MECHANIC on Staff

Lights are still on in the Wildrose camp by Rick Strankman MLA, Drumheller Stettler, Member of the Official Wildrose Opposition In mid November the Wildrose party had 21,227 members; of those, 21,216 are still involved in an ongoing movement that has been underway since 2008, I am proud to say 698 of those are in the Drumheller-Stettler constituency. As time passed, the number of people holding memberships in the party has fluctuated, but has steadily increased since its inception. Like any other party, people have come and gone for a number of personal reasons.

the 11 members that

left the party weakened only the legislative side, not the driving force behind the movement - its people and

their resolve.

Since November, 11 members left the party and made their way to another, leading some pundits to quip that, “the party is over.” In spite of the 11 members who decided to seek what they perceived as greener pastures, the party that was formed to bring much needed change to how we are governed in Alberta, remains viable and fully intact. The party was always intended to be grassroots-oriented and operated, so how can the exit of any 11 members be declared its demise? A grassroots organization, by definition, considers the rank-and-file members

and voters themselves, as equals to the leadership of the party or organization. With this in mind, it stands to reason that as an elected representative within that organization, no special status exists. One member - one vote; regardless of what position they hold, is the true democracy that can foster a healthy grassroots organization. The 11 members that left the party weakened only the legislative side, not the driving force behind the movement - its people and their resolve. All too often the line between the party and legislative sides of political organizations are blurred, ignored, or just plain misunderstood. A healthy respect of those boundaries is something we as MLAs should be continuously vigilant of. Throughout the Wildrose party, as with any party, there are a lot of rank-and-file members that volunteer countless hours based on what they believe will be best for our province. If the 21,216 people that didn’t leave the party would have suddenly resigned, then an obituary would have been in order. A phrase that best encapsulates true grassroots democracy was coined in a speech delivered by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln on November 19, 1863, better known as the Gettysburg Address. Within that historic speech he clearly defines what should be the mantra of every democratically-elected government, “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” The astute words of Abraham Lincoln have stood the test of time and I suspect they always will. The response the Wildrose Party has received from the public since the defections has been overwhelming; which has only strengthened my resolve to work towards achieving responsible and accountable government for Albertans. The policies and principles that are the basis for why people support the party

ONE MANY VS

haven’t changed. Judging by the response we are getting from Albertans, their resolve to have accountability in government has not changed either. The lights are still on in the Wildrose camp because even after 11 walked, the PARTY is far from over!
