She has performed at theatres all over musicals, three children’s books and is the co-host of Edmonton’s CityTv’s Breakfast Television. As if that wasn’t enough, in 2010 she was named Woman of the Year by the Consumer Choice Awards in Edmonton, was the spokesperson for Canadian Liver Foundation, The Kidney Foundation of Canada and received the Award of Merit in 2009 for her work with the Easter Seals. She’s acted in, directed and written many shows; for television, film and stage. But it hasn’t been all sunshine and roses for Ryan and that’s what her show ‘Here’s to the Ladies Who Laugh’ is about. Accompanied by Jen McMillian on piano and vocals, Ryan tells the audience stories of her life, the ups and downs, many that the crowd can relate to. Ryan’s story-telling comedy is interspersed with parodied songs from ABBA, Foreigner, Queen and show tunes, leaving you humming the songs she sings and laughing out loud at her stories. With an option to attend the Community Centre for cocktails and dinner before the show, the crowd was in the mood to be entertained. And entertained they were. Ryan’s show was brought to Coronation by the The Royal Performing Arts group, a nonprofit organization. Funding is made available through the Coronation Community Centre Society and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Linda McLarty, of L & C Bookkeeping in Coronation, explained that members of the board of the Royal Performing Arts group chose Ryan from a showcase in Red Deer that they attended last year. “The artists had 20 minutes to show us their performances,” said McLarty. This is the seventh year for the Royal Performing Arts Series. There are two more shows scheduled this year: Jimmy Rankin and Dave Gunning.

Resident tells of three year gap in Alix utility bills Alix town councillors learned at their regular village council meeting on Wed. CAO Bonnie Cretzman referred it to council stating it was a slip up on the village’s part because it should

For almost 50 million years, manatees have grazed the earth’s tropical lagoons, rivers and bays. In Florida alone, there were once thousands of manatees. But now there are less than 3,000 in Florida. They are in danger of becoming extinct. All too often the people who like to go boating in these same waters ignore the Caution signs. STETTLER TOWN COUNCIL

Stettler swimming pool reopens to public D. Johnston

Review Reporter Stettler Pool is back in business after a closure for maintenance over the Christmas holidays. CAO Greg Switenky was pleased with the job Parks and Leisure staff did with getting the pool maintenance done a day ahead of the expected reopening date, he explained during his report to council at the Jan. 6 meeting. Coun. Sernecky had fielded a few complaints from residents about the timing of the maintenance closure. When contacted for comment, Lee Penner, Director of Parks and Leisure

Services, explained that Christmas is traditionally a slower time of year for the pool so it was hoped the closure would affect less people. Penner was impressed with the work completed by staff in seven days. The maintenance included draining the pool and resealing the expansions joints, resealing water slide joints, repairing water guns and some painting. The pool is now open and back up to a full slate of activities. Stettler Family and Community Support Services Director Shelley Potter presented council with the FCSS budget for 2015. Council approved the budget, which

remains the same as last year. The total budget for FCSS for 2015 is $379,563 of which the town of Stettler’s portion is $32,739. The remainder of the funding comes from a Stettler County grant for $34,623 with provincial grants making up the remainder of the funding. FCSS offers community services for all segments of the community from childcare to seniors support. A full list of services offered is available at www.stettlerfcss.com. Council also heard from the Stettler Regional Board of Trade Executive Director Aubrey Brown and Manager Stacey Benjamin as they presented the Board of Trade’s 2015 budget.

Total funding for 2015 is $358,220, of which the town will contribute $217,670 from business taxes, business licenses and general taxes. Board of Trade generated revenue makes up the remainder of the funding. According to Brown, one of the highlights of 2014 was the successful Pheasant Festival, a new joint venture with Canadian Badlands, which turned a profit of $13,788. The festival will continue in 2015. Other projects planned for 2015 include retrofitting the parade float and further economic development projects and promotion.

Damages being assessed

Cont’d from Pg 1 The workshop is open to all elected officials. “It would be good information for you,” said Coun. Fehr stating that both he and Mayor Peterson had taken the course and “found it well worthwhile”. Cretzman reported that the year end audit was going well with the first full year on the new upgraded accounting system. Auditors spent less time on the preliminary 2014 audit, said Cretzman, and will be in to finish up in February. “It has really helped to have Anna [Dupuis] this year,” said Cretzman “not having to put in any late hours this year,” to get year end done. Council passed a motion accepting the new Snow Plowing & Ice Control Policy after Cretzman reported that no comments were forthcoming so no changes had been made since it was presented to council at the December meeting. Residents have 48 hours to clean their sidewalks of snow, however, the 2006 policy of the village public works being

responsible for cleaning five blocks on Main St. is still in place. Mayor Peterson confirmed the reason for this policy being established in 2006 was because it was more cost effective for public works to use equipment than to manually shovel the blocks owned by the village including the office, library, and medical building. The vandalism damages to the Bulk Water Station in October or November, stated Cretzman in a phone interview, is presently being assessed by the insurance company and their adjuster. Repairs will begin on the building once the claim has been settled. Council accepted the Alix Public Library by-laws for information. “We don’t know that they’ve changed” said Mayor Peterson as there is no indication in the report what the changes were so it’s hard to approve them. Councillors met in-camera for 20 minutes regarding a land issue with no motions resulting.

and the Chamber, when Reid was asked, has $12,000 secured and are awaiting the results of grant applications. Councillor Brigley motioned that Council give the Chamber a letter of support that they could attach to grant applications, all agreed. Council members all acknowledged that the sign was a great idea “and great for business too” said Reid. The $5000 originally sought by Chamber was discussed. Councillor Keith Griffiths, via Skype, asked if there was a budget alloted to that. CAO Kulyk said that they would be budgeting for it in the 2015 year. CAO Kulyk said “We don’t know what our funding from the province is this year.” Mayor Mark Stannard said “That’s the big one. That’s the one that scares me.” Councillor Brigley made a motion to give the Chamber of Commerce $3000 for the electronic sign project. Council reminded Reid that Chambers could come back in a new budget year for the other $2000.

A discussion had been held about half masting the flag and as there was not a very good protocol for it CAO Kulyk elaborated on the half masting provisions under the policy. The wording has been changed from “a local RCMP officer to “a serving RCMP officer”. Turn to Distribution, Pg 4

OpiniOn

It’s not my vote

by Rick Strankman MLA, Drumheller Stettler To properly hold our elected representatives to account, we need to distinguish the difference between responsibility and accountability. Responsibility refers to the obligation you have to act on behalf of those who have entrusted you with their best-interests. Accountability, on the other hand, is the obligation to answer for your actions when carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to you. As the elected member of the Alberta Legislature for Drumheller/Stettler, I feel I am personally accountable to all of the 16,000 residents in the riding. That accountability came of my own free-will when I allowed my name to stand for the Wildrose party on the ballot in the last 2012 general election. My responsibility and accountability is to every constituent - with no exceptions. The rights of the electorate to duly elect their representation should never be undermined by anyone; that right still stands true even after the polls have closed. It’s important to consider that the electorate have certain reasonable expectations of their duly elected representatives based on the policies and principles they campaigned on. As an employee of the people, their minimal expectations based on what was promised should be respected, just as it should be with any employer. A few days ago, while travelling to Calgary along Hwy 9, I stopped at the gas station in Youngstown at around 6:30 a.m. for a hot chocolate and a fill-up. On this cold January morning there was a lot full of vehicles and a store full of people. As a regular at this establishment, the conversation from customers and staff quickly turned to reassurance that Strankman my resolve to live up to my end of the bargain was the right decision. With double thumbs up from a few of the folks, I knew I had made the right decision to stand by the Wildrose policies and principles. Ultimately, in my mind, the decision whether to cross the floor or to stay the course was never mine to make. It’s not my vote. For me to change the vote of the majority is undemocratic and not something I was willing to do. The lack of respect for democracy and accountability in Alberta has been met with cynicism and anger from voters leading to a feeling that the average Albertan has no influence or voice on issues that affect them personally; creating a deficit in democracy in Alberta. Our provincial representation has evolved into a process that has become largely undemocratic. The lack of free votes in the Legislature that affects Government MLAs to tow the party line without question, removes the responsibility given to them by the electorate. This government’s elected representatives, generally have little, if any, real input into the decisions that impact the lives of those who voted for them. The Wildrose policy allowing MLAs a free vote, allows me the ability to vote freely putting the constituents first, which is ultimately the responsibility they gave to me and it makes me fully accountable to them, as it should be.

‘Not-so-honourable’ Dear Editor, It’s no surprise that the ‘not-sohonourable’ Danielle Smith walked across the floor. But it would be interesting to know if she bought her new shoes or if they were supplied by our cowardly Prime Minister Mr. Harper who ran and hid in a closet when gunfire rang out in the stone fortress (Parliament). Or were they supplied by The Honourable Preston Manning, or did she borrow a used pair from the not-so-rightful Honourable John Crosby. In May of 2011, I received a letter from Danielle Smith saying what a great day it was for Canadians that Mr. Harper had won such a victorious election. At that time I tried to convince my neighbour that she was and had never been anything

else than a full-fledged Progressive Conservative. He did not agree, of course, because he thought she was the next best thing to WaterLoo Boys (tractors). I think the questionable Premier Prentice would do well to slip Smith out the back door on a dark night when no one is watching because anyone who would ever vote for her or the party she is involved in would have to be a questionable supporter of a party. Betrayal is nothing new in politics, just ask John Crosby. He would probably never admit in my 80 plus years. I have only known two honourable politicians, Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Ralph Klein. From what I hear, a lot of people are not going to vote for Smith or Mr. Prentice if she remains in the

party. What a disappointment that will be to our Prime Minister. I have not heard much of Smith since she took her walk, maybe she hiked all the way to meet her best friend, Redford. If she would have told me she was going to do this hike, I would have bought her a pair of roller blades. Politics have been sleazy and full of betrayal since the beginning of time. I will most likely support the Wildrose Party in the next election if they have a qualified leader and at this time I would like to nominate Brenda Schimke. Anyone wishing to discuss this issue are free to call me at 780-7553234 except Doug Griffiths. Harold Baker Edgerton, Ab.

In the envelope is the final verdict on a battery of tests, etc. to determine whether or not you have Huntington’s Disease (HD). This was the story of a family in Castor early in 2014. They are doing well and continue to receive great support from family and friends. But their experience prompted a group of people from the local churches of Castor to spearhead an event to raise funds for HD research. HD is a hereditary brain disorder affecting one in every 1000 Canadians directly or indirectly. Each child born to a parent with HD has a 50 per cent chance of being diagnosed with HD. Currently there is no cure. “Laugh Again” will give people an opportunity to learn more about the work of the Huntington Society of Canada and current research efforts, and to contribute to further research. In addition, the event will feature wellknown Christian speaker, radio personality, author and “really funny guy” Phil Callaway. Phil will bring a positive message for all who find themselves in the “hard places” in life. Also included in the evening will be a “festival of desserts”, a silent auction, and special music by ‘The Singing Nuns’. Tickets are free and can be obtained by calling Basil or Christine Nichols at 403882-3924 or 403-323-0365. Donations for the silent auction are welcome! Call Cliff 403-882-3182 or Janet 403-740-6314. “Laugh Again” takes place on Saturday, January 24, at the Castor Community Hall beginning at 7:00 pm. This is an adult event, 16 plus. CORONATION/STETTLER, AB

JANUARY 15'15

A devoted follower of Jesus from a very young age Lyle Marvin Schaitel was born on November 21, 1941 in Herbert, Saskatchewan as the eldest of four siblings and lived there on the family farm until the age of five. He later moved to the family farm in Morse, Saskatchewan and lived there until 1949 when the family moved to a farm at Fleet, Alberta. He attended school in Coronation and graduated in 1959 as the valedictorian of his class. Lyle was a devoted follower of Schaitel Jesus from a very young age and always had a heart to serve God with his life. In view of this, he attended Mountain View Bible College in Didsbury, Alberta obtaining a three year bible diploma. Afterwards he attended the University of Alberta (U of A) where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science. His first job after university was in the radioisotope lab at the U of A hospital. Lyle met Sharon Hunsperger and was married to her in 1966. They then decided to become missionaries in Africa from 1968-1972. They moved back to Coronation where John joined the family in 1973 and Karisa in 1974. Lyle and Sharon then moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta in 1978 where Lyle worked for Syncrude Canada. Brent joined the family in 1982. Lyle worked for Syncrude until 1996 when he retired at the age of 55. Once Brent had graduated from high school in the year 2000, Lyle and Sharon retired to Spruce Grove and were there until Sharon passed away in 2002. Shortly after that Lyle decided to move to Sri Lanka to work as a missionary for New Life Literature. He lived and worked there until he became abruptly ill in 2007 and had to be medically escorted back to Canada. Upon recovery from his illness he moved back to his home area of Coronation and shortly afterwards was married to Arla McComish in September of 2007. Their marriage greatly expanded both their families. Lyle was an avid curler, fisherman, hunter and golfer. He also loved to eat great home cooked food made by all those that loved to cook for him. He and Arla have been living in Coronation since and have enjoyed a very happy life together. Lyle Schaitel peacefully passed away after a short battle with cancer at the age of 73 on January 5, 2015 at Coronation, Alberta. He is survived by his wife Arla Schaitel, his children John (Terri) Schaitel, Karisa (Jeff) Thompson, Brent (Brooke) Schaitel; Clayton (Tammy) McComish, Karswell McComish and Dan McComish. He is also survived by his grandchildren Taylor Luedee, Connor McComish, Denver McComish, Emma Schaitel, Ashton Schaitel, Isla Schaitel, Cohen Schaitel, Esther Schaitel, Levi Schaitel, Lola Thompson and Olive Thompson. Forecast maps for insect management Coronation/Stettler, ab.

Agri-News Forecast maps are an excellent tool when preparing to deal with potential insect problems, said an Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development specialist. “One of the challenges that can impact yield and grain quality is insect pests,” said Mark Cutts, crop specialist, Alberta Ag-Info Centre, Stettler. “A number of insects can cause crop damage at various times throughout the growing season. For example, insects can impact canola from the time of emergence (e.g. cutworms) to the pod ripening stage (e.g. lygus bugs). It’s important to understand the potential risks that insect pests cause.” One important tool that producers can use for this is forecast maps, said Cutts. “ARD produces a number of forecast maps for various insect pests in Alberta. These forecast maps are updated annually, are published on the ARD website and cover

canola, cereal and pulse crop insects.” Several of the forecast maps are produced from data collected in the fall and are made available prior to the growing season. Forecast maps for grasshoppers, wheat midge and wheat stem sawfly are generated from fall sampling. These maps allow producers to evaluate whether any of these insects could be a concern in the upcoming growing season. A second type of forecast map provides insect updates during the growing season. “This type of map allows producers to receive timely information on the number of insects in their farming area,” said Cutts. “Bertha armyworm and diamondback moth activity is monitored through the use of pheromone traps during a portion of the growing season. The number of moths captured in the traps is updated weekly. Areas with high moth counts are more likely to see feeding damage by the larvae

that emerge later in the growing season.” There are also forecast maps based on surveys performed the previous growing season. These include the maps for pea leaf weevil and cabbage seed pod weevil. “Although they are not strictly forecast maps the information is still beneficial,” said Cutts. “Areas with high numbers of these pests in one growing season are at risk to have economically damaging populations the next.” Cutts cautioned that forecast maps should not be used in isolation. “It’s important to note that while forecast maps provide insight into a potential insect pest, they cannot replace a field scouting program. Field scouting allows producers to evaluate the type and number of insect pests present, the presence of any insect damage, and the growth stage of the crop. “They can then use this information to make an appropriate management

New collection of grain elevator lists adds to online trove of Prairie history submitted/University of Alberta Western Canadian grain elevator lists are the latest online addition to the University of Alberta Libraries’ (UAL) website Peel’s Prairie Provinces, which helps tell the story of the prairies. Researchers and everyday history buffs alike have free and open access to millions of pages of the digitized collection. The new collection enhances UAL’s ongoing commitment to working with community partners to preserve and share Western Canada’s history by putting historical resources online for everyone to explore, said Geoff Harder, Associate University Librarian. “It falls to the University of Alberta and memory institutions like us to ensure that Western Canada’s story is available for future generations. “Identifying and digitizing collections is a good way of moving us closer to that goal,” Harder said. “The U of A’s first president, Henry Marshall Tory, spoke of ‘uplifting the whole people’, and one way

we support that ambition is by working with our communities and helping them know where they came from “Access to historical information helps in understanding how we got to where we are today and knowing where we want to go tomorrow.” The Peel’s Prairie Provinces website focuses on material related to Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. “We collect things that fall within that geographic boundary and it is a wealth of information”, yielding insights into urban development and political and social trends to ethnic views and even the history of marketing across the prairies, Harder said. Thanks to a partnership with the Canadian Grain Commission, more than 80 years’ worth of historical information on grain elevators in Canada is now available online. Records kept by the commission span 1912 to 1998 and list licensed grain elevators, their locations across Canada and

At one time, the tall wooden sentinels dotted farming communities across the Prairies and were instrumental in the grain trade. “The newly available online data will help anyone exploring diverse but related fields like transportation, railway history and prairie agricultural economics,” said Peggy Sue Ewanyshyn, digitization librarian.
