Castor cakery hopes to slay on prime-time’s Dragon’s Den Katie Davis

Local Castor business Today’s Sweet cakery will soon venture deep into the prodigious caverns of CBC’s Dragon’s Den and slay the cunning beasts of commerce at the Calgary auditions for the show February 1, 2014.

Owner/operator duo Eva Wylie and fiancée Cody Borek will be showcasing their wares and innovative vision to judges during the day-long audition at Mount Royal University, in hopes of making it on the show for the upcoming season.

Borek, a Stettler native, describes the opportunity as a valuable chance to connect with successful entrepreneurs and businesspeople in furthering their company vision.

“We’ve got a really great idea [for our business] and this is a great way to advertise us, expand and make really great partnerships,” Borek says.

“You want to partner with the smartest, best people in the world so you can learn and grow.”

In preparation for the audition, Borek has spared no effort in educating himself on the expectations of the show’s notoriously demanding judging panel, which includes Boston Pizza and Mr. Lube franchising mogul Jim Treliving, marketing expert Arlene Dickinson and controversial television personality and investment pundit Kevin O’Leary.

all of our numbers [and] studying all the top cakeries in the world,” Borek says. “I feel like I’m fairly prepared.”

Though Borek is mum on details of their idea, he will admit that they’re not thinking of the traditional expansion of stores. He also noted that they’ve been formulating healthy cupcakes with higher nutrient counts to add healthy value to the sweet treats, which have been popular with Castor and area patrons. Borek notes that since Today’s Sweet opened in September 2012 the community support has been essential in their continued presence in the town.

“Castor’s been absolutely amazing to us,” he says. “We’re very young, so there’s no way we could have started this business in a city [due to the costs]. So by starting in Castor and expanding outwards, it’s really been a very smart move.”

Borek says he respects the charitable work the Den panel does outside of their business ventures and seeks to do the same with his own work.

Todays Sweet presently donates to the Stettler Animal Shelter and other community charities and if chosen for the show, the pair plan on renting the Castor or Stettler Community Hall and have a charity event and showing of their wares for free.

“We think everyone in the world should enjoy the Today’s Sweet experience,” Borek says with a grin; venturing forth into the Den could be one step closer to that goal.

Funding cuts mean valuable programs in danger Board Chair Ken Checkel spoke to his advocacy of the Healthy Empowered and Resilient Teens (HEaRT) program in the midst of provincial funding cuts.

HEaRT, based on mental health promotion and early intervention practices in during and after-school settings, was lauded as an important program for youth.

Castor pool upgrades revisited Katie Davis News Reporter

A spreadsheet of supplementary funding information and costs submitted by the Town of Castor for pool upgrades was discussed at the County of Paintearth meeting on January 21, 2014. This document was a formal follow-up to the January 7 request by the County to break down what funding sources the Town had applied for in funding their pump upgrades, at a cost of $61,900. The Town is requesting $50,000 from the County.

It was discussed that the spreadsheet did not indicate necessary information required by the County to move forward with funding. It was discussed that the town had not applied for many external grants, as it appeared one grant was applied for the installation of a handicap aquatic lift.

Council agreed to discuss the funding spreadsheet with the Town of Castor representatives at the joint meeting later that evening which was not formally open to the public.

Destruction of records

Council gave approval to dispose of records as per the destruction of records policy. Administration records requested to be destroyed included one banker box of insurance records, policies and schedules from 2001; 10 bankers boxes of EFT payroll, AR, AP, County deposits, GST and cash receipts from 2003 - 2005; two bankers boxes of receiver general remittance material from 1994 – 2006; and two bankers boxes of general correspondence from 2006.

“The HEaRT Program is the Mental Health Capacity Building project in Clearview Public Schools,” Checkel said.

“Funding for these programs has been provided by grants from Alberta Health Services and Alberta Education, but with funding cuts on the horizon valuable programs like this are in danger of being discontinued due to lack of support. We are advocating for this program to continue because of the valuable service it provides to students and families.”

Shared facilities

Clearview Public Schools recognized the need for a recreational facility in Stettler that could be shared with the schools, Town and County of Stettler. A meeting was held on December 19, 2013 with the stakeholders from Clearview and the issue was addressed. It was decided by the committee to create a vision and develop a plan prior to further meetings with potential partners.

Clearview, Wm. E. Hay Composite High School (WEH) and the Stettler Minor

Football Club (MFC) joined in 2007 - 2008 to develop a fieldhouse concept for the community. A fieldhouse would allow teams that hold and host events at the Stettler Complex fields to have washroom and change room facilities available to them apart from those offered at the school. The fieldhouse was already used by the Panthers, Cougars and Wildcats football teams and for other events.

Approximately $269,600 has been spent to date on the facilities.

The following donors have contributed: Stettler Minor Football Club - $124,000 ($60,000 Community Facility Enhancement Grant, $40,000 Football Club, $24,000 Town of Stettler) Clearview Public Schools - $100,600 Wm. E. Hay - $25,000 Wildcat Football Club - $15,000 Encan - $4,000 Superfluit - $1,000

The Stettler Minor Football and Wildcat Football Club amounts encompass donations from community members and businesses.

Clearview Board considered a proposal that the cost to complete the common areas in the fieldhouse be shared equally by three partners consisting of Clearview, the Stettler Minor Football Club and the Wildcat Football Club. Moving forward, estimates on the total cost to complete common areas and concession area will be developed.

Coronation trip proposal

The Board granted preliminary approval to Coronation School for a student trip to Ottawa and Montreal in April 2014. Coronation School is teaming up with Consort School for this SEVEC (Society for Educational Visits and Exchanges in Canada) trip.

Electronic diagnoses device

The Board decided to purchase two Automated External Defibrillator (AED) units for the division. One will go to Gus Wetter School and the other for Coronation School. A possible source of support for AEDs has been identified through a federally-funded program with the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Proposed program changes

Council received correspondence from the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) regarding proposed changes to the Local Road Bridge Program (LRBP).

Background provided by the document indicated that the review committee participated in a handful of 2012 meetings to evaluate the LRBP and conducted a member survey, which determined 52 per cent of respondents supported the committee’s recommendation that municipalities be awarded full control over local bridge structures and that the program should adopt a formula-based funding model (51 per cent). The document indicated that shortly after the survey was closed the Alberta Government said the LRBP was indefinitely zero-funded, leaving the committee in suspension.

The document ultimately asked councils to address any concerns, comments or statements regarding the LRBP moving forward, so that a greater perspective on the program could be ascertained in anticipation of a proposal to the Minister of Transportation in 2014.

Reeve George Glazier noted that the program was one County “Didn’t want to lose.” Some issues Council discussed in brief included the scope of environmental regulations on bridges on lower-travelled roads, which was generally viewed as overwhelming.

It was a full house at the Coronation Town Council meeting on January 27, 2014 as the gallery had a collection of delegates waiting to eventually speak to Council. Once again Councillor Keith Griffiths conference called in to the meeting from his vacation. A land matter - offer to purchase - was added to the agenda.

and that the RCMP does not view paying staff for this transport as an issue.

Also discussed were oversized vehicles entering town and not using the appropriate lane (Railway Ave). Fitzgerald said he’d talk to RCMP in Stettler who have weigh-scales and know the trucks “inside-out” to get some information.

Municipal library

Library Manager Lauren Reid and Chairperson Marilyn Polege presented for the Coronation Municipal library as a delegation, presenting Council with their draft budget and handing out pamphlets to Council members which outlined new services, social media accounts and offers. Some highlights of the delegation include a winter reading program, an extended DVD collection, video game rental and online magazine

The Coronation and District Chamber of Commerce has launched their Shop Local program throughout Coronation Chamber members to encourage community members to support local business.

The program encourages a Coronation focus to commerce by allowing patrons to deposit their receipts for $50 or more for a chance to win a monthly draw of $50 Coronation Cash when shopping at businesses that belong to the Coronation and District Chamber of Commerce. The new initiative, developed and adopted from the

Council discussed the future of Municipal Reserve lot Katie Davis News Reporter Council discussed the future of Municipal Reserve (MR) lot at 4110 - 46 Avenue in Stettler during the Town Council meeting on January 21, 2013.

The history of the parcel of land has been coloured by the location of the parcel: sitting at the intersection of 48 Avenue and 42 Street, south of Lyster Farms.

In 1993 the Town Council motioned that the land be left as a buffer zone until “the Lyster family has disposed of the property.” At present, the MR lot and Lyster Farm are in the middle of an industrial park with a long-term perspective of industrial development.

It was discussed that if the MR designation were to be removed, the Town could lease or sell the property in accordance with the Municipal Government Act, with profits used for other park related development. It was mentioned that the developing industries surround the buffer zone and area north of it, effectively surrounding the properties.

It was noted by CAO Rob Stoutenberg that approaches to the development of the lot could include going ahead with the MR disposition process and community notification to allow citizens to voice concerns or discussing the issue with the Lyster property owners to identify the plan to move into an industrial disposition.

It was also discussed that at present the lot is not in great shape due to some ailing trees with limbs fallen down due to heavy winds.

Ultimately, after an in-camera session, Council motioned to enter into discussion with the current landowners of the

adjacent property in regards to the existing industrial development in the area and to determine the need for separation of the MR lot.

Reports

Winnie Bissett presented the 2014 budget for the Heartland Youth Center.

She introduced the budget by mentioning successes the Center, which included an anticipated membership of around 300 participants, a rundown of the myriad of projects the Center has initiated successfully and the tales of two participants, Kirsten Doccerty and Dustin Jackson who both participated in and have achieved great personal and professional successes through their involvement with the Center.

The Stettler and District Handi-Bus Society also presented their budget to Council.

Council discussed correspondence from the Government of Alberta Municipal Affairs Department regarding the New Home Buyer Protection Act (NHBPA), which comes into effect February 1 and mandates that all new homes built in Alberta must have a home warranty in place.

As per the document received, the act “applies only to new homes constructed under a building permit applied for after this section comes into force.” It was taken as information and general discussion was suggestive that Council thought it would provide new owners with some form of protection which would be a positive.

In 1979 David married Lois Little and to this union was added two children: Karissa (Brian Weeks) and Jeffrey (Dakota Melin). David’s children and grandchildren were the joy of his life and he was so proud of all their accomplishments. The day that he went into the hospital we had driven to Castor to see the granddaughters in their Sunday School Christmas program.

David was a part of an active toastmasters club while living in Biggar, which he enjoyed.

Since retiring to Coronation he joined the Seniors group and disked with them every

BFI not renewing waste collection Cont’d from Pg 3

BFI Canada sent correspondence to the Town that they would not be renewing the Residential and Commercial Waste Collection in the Town of Coronation at the end of their contract, which expires April 1.

CAO Sandra Kulyk noted that upon receiving the notification of termination contract, she drafted a Request for Proposals (RFP) for waste management to five companies operating in Alix, Red Deer, Hanna and Hardisty.

Kulyk noted that it was her administrative responsibility to issue an RFP as soon as possible to ensure waste collection would be in place for the town.

“So I’m presenting this more as an information item until I receive proposals,” she said, noting that she’d included a recycling option as part of the proposal.

To ensure a new garbage collection service would be operative by April 1, she set the closing deadline for RFP submission as January 31, 2014.

Town newsletter

ECA Review Publisher Joyce Webster asked to speak to Item 5a on the agenda, pertaining to costs on inserting the town newsletter into the Review.

Webster noted that at present Coronation residents receive 894 copies of the newspaper, less store issues, which would be a 16 per cent increase in scope of potential readership for the newsletter if it were to be inserted in distributed copies of the Review. She noted that a 16 per cent savings could be achieved for the Town between the present Canada Post rate of distribution versus the ECA Review rate.

Webster noted that if town news, including library news and bowling news were to go in the Review, labour, paper and copying costs would decrease.

She also noted that advertising that goes in the newsletter for free was competing against the Review, which was a

taxpaying business. An example Webster used was fundraising events such as those hosted by the Wellness Centre wherein the town doesn’t supply the entertainment or liquor for free, in competition with town liquor stores, so she queried why the town should supply advertising for free.

After Webster left, Council discussed the issue further. Councillor Griffiths said he would like to see a cost and savings comparison chart. Council discussed that some of the organizations using the newsletter as advertising were perhaps unable to pay for advertising themselves.

Councillor Liz Adams noted that the scope of news for those solely advertising in the newsletter, like the golf course or recreational curling, were missing out on the wide scope of audience that would read about these subjects in the Review.

“I think it’s a disgrace that we’re not using a taxpaying business in town,” she said.

Motion was carried to begin distribution of the newsletter in the ECA Review.

Cenotaph repairs

Council deliberated repairing the Coronation Cenotaph at Windsor Avenue and Royal Street, as it was determined in the summer of 2013 that there was a gas leak at the monument.

Discussed were liability concerns, including having propane out in the open and potentially subject to tampering.

Barricades around the gas were considered; so too was the issue that such barricades might take away from the look of the Cenotaph. Ultimately it was decided that more research should be conducted before coming to a decision on the matter.

Land matter

Council entered into an in-camera session regarding a land matter at 8:33 p.m., which lasted until 8:45. Motion was made from this session to sell a parcel of land at 5117 Railway Avenue at the price of $11,180 plus tax.

Members of the Killam/Forestburg RCMP Detachment executed a search warrant at a rural property in Flagstaff County on January 21, 2014. A multitude of stolen property was recovered during the course of a two day search. The value of the property is estimated to be in excess of $40,000 and included items such as ATVs, a utility trailer, generators, miscellaneous tools and a 1,000 gallon propane tank. The search warrant was the result of a lengthy investigation into stolen property. Curtis Schaaf (39) of Flagstaff County has been charged with a number of criminal offences including possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Schaaf is scheduled to appear in Killam Provincial Court on February 4, 2014.

Paintearth 4 - H Club news

by Tara van Zandbergen, Club Reporter The Paintearth 4 - H Multi Club has started 2013-14 off with a bang.

Our club started by decorating a tree for the Festival of Trees and afterwards we went bowling at Galahad for our Christmas party.

We have been very active outside the club too. Four members went to Regional Fun Day in Stettler. There were a total of 122 members in attendance. Members got to go swimming, make bird feeders, get their faces painted, play ‘minute to win it’ plus many more exciting activities. The

day ended with an ice cream social.

The next weekend members attended a District Fun Day of bowling in Coronation. We held our annual visit to Painteath Lodge in Castor where members played new and old versions of board games.

Our club is holding the District ski night February 7 at the Alliance Ski Hill. On Friday, February 28 we are holding our club presentations and public speaking at Gus Wetter school. All are welcome to attend.

The first period was fast paced end to end action with both teams demonstrating excellent defensive strategies until Lexi Antos took advantage of a Storm defensive breakdown, scoring on a breakaway with 2:30 left in the period.
