Emerson Drive headlines Delburne’s 100th anniversary Bethany Zacharias

ECA Review Reporter Emerson Drive played to a sold out crowd June 29 at Delburne Agriplex to help celebrate the Town’s 100th birthday. In an interview with the band before the concert, lead singer, Brad Mates, said the band came together because of “fate”. Mates, originally from Grand Prairie,

Alberta, and band members live in Nashville, Tennessee and have been living there for 10 years writing and recording music. “We’ve been gone a long time and kind of lost touch with some of our fan base in Canada,” said Mates. “It’s been nice to play more shows closer to home.” The band arrived in Delburne after travelling overnight from Dauphin,

Manitoba where they were one of the headliners at the Dauphin Country Fest June 28. Emerson Drive comprised of Mates (lead vocals), Danick Dupelle (guitar and background vocals), David Pichette (fiddle), Mike Melancon (drums) and Dale Wallace (keyboard and background vocals), recently released “Roll”, an 11-track album, which they’ve promoted in Canada

since March while on tour with Canadian band, Doc Walker. Emerson Drive has racked up countless award nominations in both the U.S. country market at the (ACM’s) and (CMA’s), as well as in Canada where they have picked up multiple trophies for Group or Duo of the Year from the CCMA (Canadian Country Music Association). Stock trailer crashes, kills two cows Bethany Zacharias

ECA Review Reporter On Wednesday June 26, 14 miles south of Coronation, on Highway 872 the RCMP were called to a crash site at 11:15 a.m. involving a stock trailer and single vehicle rollover. The young man driving the truck, who’s name cannot be released because charges are pending, was travelling northbound when he lost control of his truck and hit an approach causing his

vehicle to partially rollover. At the time of the accident, the man was pulling six cows and 18 calves in a stock trailer. The stock trailer ended up landing on the man’s truck after impact. Two cows were killed in the crash. RCMP said the young man caused the accident when he went to change the dial on his radio, which momentarily distracted him from the road. The RCMP also said the situation could have been a lot worse and that the young man is fortunate to be alive.

A dead cow laid beside a rollover truck along Highway 872 June 26. A young man pulling a stock trailer crashed after he went to turn dial on radio, said RCMP.

Coronation Pro Rodeo Queen contestants My name is Payton Butterwick. I was born on March 13, 1997 and I am sixteen years old. I live in Brownfield, Alberta and go to school in Coronation. I was an active member in 4-H beef for six years and I currently participate Butterwick at dog shows where I have shown many different types of dogs. I am running for Coronation Pro Rodeo Queen this year because if I was fortunate enough to win I would love promoting the Town of Coronation as well as the pro rodeo. Payton Butterwick

Brenda Schimke Legislation to enforce a threeyear contract between the Alberta Government, the Teachers’ Association, and Alberta School Boards has now been proclaimed. At their regular meeting on June 20, 2013 the Clearview School Board started the process to establish a local Internal School Jurisdiction Committee mandated under the new framework agreement. To better describe the committee, Clearview Trustees have chosen to call it the Internal Teacher Workload Committee (ITWC). It is a joint committee comprised of two trustees, a central office representative, teachers named by the bargaining unit, and a facilitator provided by Alberta Education. The ITWC is not to be adversarial, but collaborative and

cooperative in working towards a common goal—reducing “overhead” for teachers so that they can get on with the job of teaching. “I’m interested to know what issues are coming up. If we (the school board) have policies and procedures that aren’t central to the educational goals of our district, then we would like to change,” said Ken Checkel, board chairman. There are appeal mechanisms in place should problems arise amongst committee members. The board appointed Karen Holloway of Castor and Patty Dittrick of Stettler to sit on the committee. Superintendent, John Bailey will represent central office and Bill Hoppins has been appointed provincial facilitator. The first meeting was held in Stettler on June 27, 2013 with school principals, Corey van Zandbergen of Byemoor and Daram Van Oers of Castor repre-

Southern Alberta flood relief: Four RV dealers, four weeks, one goal: $300,000 In the wake of the devastating damage caused by flooding in southern Alberta, four Alberta RV dealerships have banded together to raise $300,000 to contribute to the ongoing flood relief efforts provided by non-profit organizations such as Samaritan’s Purse Canada and Canadian Red Cross. Until July 21, 2013, Fraserway RV Calgary, Fraserway RV Edmonton, Lacombe RV and Roadmaster RV of Leduc, Alberta will donate $1,000 from every RV sold to Samaritan’s Purse Canada or Canadian Red

Cross to help the thousands of Albertans who are displaced or in crisis during to flooding of their homes and communities. Fraserway has already assisted Samaritan’s Purse in their immediate disaster response and will continue to do so. Tell your friends about one of these four dealerships and their efforts to help with flood relief in Alberta. When you refer a friend or family member you are helping in the relief effort. Stettler Gym Space There is a community feeling in Stettler that more gym space is needed. The idea of a jointly-owned gym, built on school board property, has been bounced around for some time. Clearview Trustees, at their regular board meeting on June 27, 2013, felt it important to first analyze what the facility needs are at the Stettler Schools before any approach is made to the Town and County of Stettler. Trustees Cheri Neitz of Erskine and Patty Dittrick of Stettler have been named to work with the appropriate division staff and the principals of the Stettler Schools to gather information and report back to the board in early fall. A final decision on whether to approach the Town, County and government on a jointly-funded

gym will be made after the elections and the new school board is in place.

Grad dresses donated to flood relief in High River and Calgary Bethany Zacharias

ECA Review Reporter

Rowena Swahn and Teresa Gerber of Coronation looked at a polka-dotted grad dress June 30 before they loaded it into a truck headed for Calgary. Swahn and Gerber collected grad dress donations for the graduating class in High River, Alberta.

In the wake of the flooding and devastation in High River, Calgary and much of southern Alberta, many people began to wonder what they could do to help. Rowena Swahn of Coronation, Alberta came across a Facebook page titled ‘Beautiful Calgary Brides’ and noticed they were asking for grad dress donations, which would be sent to graduates in High River because many of them had lost their graduation clothes during the flood. Swahn decided she would take to her own Facebook page to see if anyone in the local area was interested in donating their used grad dress. The response Swahn received was “unbelievable”.

“I posted my message on June 25 and by the end of the day I had over 20 offers from in and around the area,” said Swahn. On June 30 Swahn and her friend Terese Gerber loaded up Gerber’s car with the donated grad dresses, which Gerber would deliver to Calgary by the end of that night. In total Swahn and Gerber collected 34 grad dresses from a total of six towns: Coronation, Castor, Consort, Sedgewick, Hardisty and Czar. “I’m really impressed with everyone’s generosity,” said Swahn. “It makes me proud to live in the community that I do.” Graduations in High River have been postponed till further notice. ‘Beautiful Calgary Brides’ on Facebook will be collecting grad dresses until July 12.

Castor will host ACDC cover band at ‘Bashin’ the Beaverdome’ On July 13 the Castor Arena will host a concert called “Castor Rocks!” featuring an ACDC tribute band from Toronto named “THUNDERSTRUCK”. The event has been dubbed as the “Bashin’ the Beaverdome” THUNDERSTRUCK is billed as Canada and North America’s number one ACDC tribute band. The band has shared the stage in Alberta with star recording acts such as: Trooper, BTO and Loverboy where Thunderstruck was reviewed to have “stole the show” for their sound, vocals, and overall stage performance. Event Chair Todd Pawsey gave them top marks in showmanship for their level of engagement with the crowd during their shows. “Their look, their music and characters… are spot on with ACDC. If you close your eyes and listen, you’d think it was the real thing,” said Pawsey. “And Rich - their “Angus” - puts on a real treat for the crowd, you have to see it,” added Pawsey.

Thunderstruck will not be alone on stage. Cold Tie Walker, a classic rock band with a hint of blues from Bonnyville, Alberta will be performing before them.

Cold Tie Walker is a frequent headliner at many Alberta and Saskatchewan music festivals. They play a mix of recognizable classics from Johnny Cash and Led Zeppelin to Billy Idol or the Tragically Hip. The concert has been in the making for many years and it will

coincide with the slo-pitch/baseball tournament and high school reunion in Castor on the same weekend. Tickets are on sale for $25 and the show starts at 7 p.m. and goes till 1 a.m. “We kept the price reasonable. We want people to come out and bring their friends, their block, their neighbourhood … to have a great night out,” said Pawsey. “As a fundraiser for the Castor Minor Sports programs, we also wanted an event that the parents and volunteers can have fun at and show their support at the same time. Our small towns don’t often get to put this on, so we are hopeful the area will turn out in support,” continued Pawsey. Tickets for those 18 or older are available in Castor at the recreation office and the Castor UFA and in Coronation at Golby Hardware. Stettler ticket outlets include CR Glass, and

Pfeiffer Music. Committee members will also have tickets for sale, check out the Facebook page at ‘Castor Rocks! “Thunderstruck” is Bashin’ the Beaverdome!’ or call the recreation office at 403-882-3225.

Firearms seized from High River residents Bethany Zacharias

ECA Review Reporter On June 30 residents of High River were allowed to collect firearms taken from their homes during the flood by RCMP. Residents were escorted to the detachment to retrieve their firearms and then escorted back to the checkpoint. RCMP took possession of firearms during flood relief operations in High River to locate and rescue residents. All guns were tagged with the information required to ensure they could be returned to their lawful owner. OPINION

The next big one Brenda Schimke

ECA Review Journalist Should we be concerned, or should we just mark the recent Southern Alberta floods down as a 100year event? How we look on this flood will determine whether any decisive action is taken to mitigate damage from future floods. Conservatives have a hard time acknowledging climate change because it’s seen as “anti-business”. But if we don’t believe human activities affect our climate negatively, is there not a point where we acknowledge even without humans, weather patterns change naturally? Most people can agree that our land was once covered completely in ice. Those who studied the Southern Alberta flood of 2005, which was then labeled as a 100-year flood event, believed there were social and economic reasons to be more prepared for the next big flood. The Committee, led by then-Conservative MLA, and local High River farmer, George Groeneveld, made 18 recommendations. The report was finished in 2006 and sat on a shelf collecting dust until Premier Allison Redford pulled it out, six years after its completion. If only four of the 18 recommendations had been enacted in 2006, this current Alberta tragedy, for families, businesses and taxpayers, would have not been so bad. It was recommended that the government do a flood mapping of the province. They were also strongly urged to stop the sale of Crown land on flood plains to developers. Another recommendation was to mandate titles on “flood plain lands” note it so that buyers were informed and wouldn’t get a nasty surprise at a later date. In that report there were 54 municipalities identified as having a potential for catastrophic floods. Back then, authors of the report recommended that a mere $300 million be spent in those identified areas to mitigate damages from future floods. Today the province has committed $1 billion for cleanup. The Federal government will have to cough up some of their budget dollars as well. This will be a hard exercise for two governments that philosophical can’t get their heads around climate change, natural or man-made. But the reality of the flood of 2013 is that it was “anti-business”. CIBC World Market economists said Canada’s economic growth could be cut in half this year because of the floods. It crippled downtown Calgary, head office capital of Western Canada. It caused economic harm for towns in B.C. and Alberta, hurt truckers, temporarily shut-down pipelines, curtailed oil and gas activities, caused losses in the service sectors and flooded farmlands. And unfortunately, it created more government debt. But numbers say little when compared to the human heartache—the lost lives, lost homes, lost businesses and lost dreams. It’s these stories which will hopefully spur governments to get off their butts and start preparing today for the next big one.

Actions of the High River RCMP very disturbing Dear Editor, The actions of the RCMP In High River, Alberta is very disturbing in a free and democratic society. Using the flooding disaster as an excuse to break into private homes and removing private property is a criminal offence. This kind of behaviour one would expect from a common criminal. What sets Canada apart from third world dictators is the rule of law. This kind of behaviour is a breach of public trust. No one can

Did the RCMP break into these homes to rescue their firearms? I think the RCMP need to rethink their role in a civil society. Wearing a uniform doesn’t give them a licence to break the law. I always thought their job was to serve and to protect the public. A judicial inquiry should be called to investigate this incident in High River. Stacking agronomic practices to maximize wheat yield Agri-News A new research study could increase yields and profitability for Alberta wheat producers. “The research is investigating three agronomic practices: supplemental nitrogen fertilizer, plant growth regulators (PGRs) and foliar fungicide applications,” says Sheri Strydhorst, agronomic research scientist, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD), Barrhead. Strydhorst is leading the new research which aims to determine the synergistic benefits of stacking agronomic practices to maximize wheat yield. “There have been a number of studies

looking at these individual practices, but there is very limited research testing their combined, and potentially synergistic, effects,” she says. “For example, supplemental nitrogen fertilizer and foliar fungicides may each individually increase yields by five per cent, but when used in combination with PGRs is it possible to achieve a 20 per cent yield increase?” Nitrogen fertilizer applications can increase yield and profitability. Supplemental nitrogen fertilizer applied at the time of maximum crop uptake can maximize yield potential, while late season applications tend to only increase grain protein content.

Get with the ‘Program’

High nitrogen fertilizer rates can cause crop lodging. The research study will investigate the yield benefits associated with applying urea ammonium nitrate at multiple rates with and without a urease inhibitor, during the time of maximum crop uptake. “There is a lot of interest in using PGRs in intensive management systems,” says Strydhorst. “If applied at the correct growth stage and under ideal conditions, PGRs will produce shorter (2 to 15 cm shorter), thicker and stronger stems that improve lodging resistance. Forty eight treatments in agronomic practices study Cont’d from Pg 6 “Although occasional yield increases have been reported, the main purpose of PGRs is to reduce lodging associated with high input production, reduce combine harvest time, and reduce straw production. The research project will study the effects of two PGRs (Cycocel and Ethrel) in high input production systems. Foliar fungicides must protect the upper canopy leaves to permit a longer period for grain fill, which leads to higher yields, and increased kernel weight. The research project will study the effects of single foliar fungicide applications made at the time of flag leaf extension and a second foliar fungicide application made 14 days later when the wheat head is half emerged. The final component of this study is to examine genetic responses to agronomic practices. “International research has shown that cultivars respond differently to supplemental nitrogen fertilizer, PGRs and foliar fungicides, explains Strydhorst. “This study will investigate how current Alberta wheat varieties respond to intensive agronomic management and if some cultivars

are more responsive than others. There are 48 treatments in this study to examine the synergistic benefits of stacking two and/or three of these agronomic practices. “In addition to assessing yield benefits, a basic economic analysis will be conducted to determine the return on investment associated with individual and stacked agronomic practices, says Strydhorst. “One of the study’s guiding principles is to ensure that the increased wheat yields will cover the additional input costs associated with these intensive management systems. Field trials are being grown at Barrhead, Willingdon and Lacombe, Alberta, in 2013. Plot tours showcasing this research are planned for June 26 and July 22 in Barrhead. To register, call Kelly or Cindy at 780-674-8268.

ride on the rise

Bruce Penton It’s just past mid-season, and Toronto Blue Jays have had more ups and downs than a rollercoaster fanatic at the summer fair. In the pre-season, many experts had the Jays bound for the World Series. They were coming off a winter of major acquisitions — pitchers R.A. Dickey, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, .330 hitters Jose Reyes and Melky Cabrera. Add those stars to longtime Jays Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Brett Lawrie and, well. . . the Jays had Penton to be on their way. Unfortunately, however, the season started. For the first two months, the Jays were among the three or four worst teams in Major League Baseball. They needed the Hubble telescope to see the leaders in the American League East and fans all over Canada were calling for the heads of manager John Gibbons and general manager Alex Anthopoulos. The roller coaster then started to rise. Up, up it went. Toronto seemingly couldn’t lose. Adam Lind, so bad last year that the Jays sent him down to their Triple A team in Las Vegas to try to reinvent himself, started performing

like Babe Ruth. Four in a row . . . seven straight. . . 11 victories in a row. Suddenly, the Jays were at .500, and their 2.36 team earned-run-average in June was MLB’s best. Best of all, the Blue Jays were back in the pennant race by the end of June. Those preseason predictions were starting to resemble fact, not fiction. “It was a battle early on, we all know that,” manager Gibbons told MLB. com. “We always figured it was just a matter of time before we started playing better .” The biggest surprise has been the generally inconsistent Lind, whose status at the start of 2013 was a part-time first-baseman, occasional DH. If he hit .260 with a dozen or 15 homers, the Jays would have been overjoyed, but through June, his numbers were spectacular: .322 average and 11 home runs, with still about 50 per cent of the season to be played. “You know if it stays like this, those are MVPcalibre numbers,” Lind told the Toronto Star. “I mean I’d love to be that, but I’ve been around long enough, you guys know how my seasons go.“ His season may go all the way to October, with that Jays rollercoaster riding high well into hockey season.

Delburne’s 100th anniversary party Brenda Schimke

ECA Review reporter The residents of Delburne were in a mood for a party, and party they did, over the Canada Day weekend as they celebrated their Village’s 100th Anniversary. The Village was to be called Wilburne, but had to be changed when the Registrar of Towns advised that another town had already been incorporated under that name. Using words rhyming with Wilburne, Delburne was eventually chosen as the Village’s name. Breakfasts, ball games, gymkhana, sheep herding, working horse demos, tractor pulls, children’s entertainment, wild water zorbing, suppers, and beer gardens were some of the many activities that filled the three-day event starting on June 29 and ending on July 1, 2013. Emerson Drive performed at a sold-out concert on Saturday evening and many danced in the sweltering heat to the tunes of the Emeralds on Sunday evening. Monday, with the sun shining and the heat rising, large crowds descended on the streets of Delburne to celebrate their Village and enjoy the parade entrants. The first recorded minutes of a Delburne Village Council meeting was January 13, 1913. But there was a thriving community before Delburne was incorporated in the fall of 1912. It began with the survey of the Grand Truck Pacific Railway in 1910 and W.G. Clendening and M.J. Manning purchasing the townsite on October 4, 1910. In a year, the town grew to have two general stores, two hardware stores, two butcher shops, two boarding houses, a furniture store, stationery, bank, newspaper, livery barn and stable, pool room and barber shop, lumber yard, auction mart, blacksmith shop, real estate office, doctor’s office, three implement agents, music hall and two churches. There was a gun club, baseball and tennis clubs as well as a hockey team. With the arrival of the railway, the Delburne Creamery opened its doors. The railway also led to the construction of the first grain elevator in 1914 and subsequent elevators in 1927 and 1929. In 1926 the first electrical lights were installed in businesses. Today the industry base has changed to industrial and commercial facilities including a business incubator facility. Many young families have chosen Delburne as a good place to raise their children. In the 2006 census, the median age of residents was 37 and the largest age groups were 30 – 45 years of age and 0 – 15. At midnight on July 1, a spectacular fireworks show wrapped up Delburne’s 100th Anniversary celebrations and Canada’s 146th Birthday Party.

Delburne Library float depicts ‘first reading room!”

Nine year old, Aiden Srahnlek of Red Deer, Alberta participated in ‘Wild Water Zorbing’ June 29 at Delburne’s recreation area during the Town’s centennial weekend celebration.

Streets were lined with residents, former residents home for the celebrations and visitors including Erik & Bryanna Sibrian with son Kamilo.

Lead singer, Brad Mates belted out song after song during a 90 minute concert at Delburne’s Agrixplex June 29.

Nine year old, Kegan Bishell of Consort, Alberta rode the mechanical bull June 29 at Delburne’s 100th birthday celebration.

Five year old, Nate Smith of Innisfail, Alberta looked to his grandparents as he tested out a vintage car at the ‘Vintage Machinary Display’ at Delburne’s centennial.

Oldtimers were honoured with riding the 100th Anniversary Delburne float on Monday, July 1. (L-R) Front row: Mary McInenly and Hazel Bysterveld, middle row: Margaret Jones and Flora MacDonald with Myrtle Jeffrey in the third row.
