Friends of the Battle River Railway celebrate inaugural weekend Bethany Zacharias
ECA Review Reporter July 6 - 7 marked the inaugural weekend celebration of the Friends of the Battle River Railway tourism project. The recently purchased 76 person passenger car was bought from the Kamloops Heritage Society and is owned by the Friends of the Battle River Railway Society. The passenger train left Forestburg for Heisler July 7 at 11 a.m. with the final destination of Camrose County Park. Guests aboard the train also stopped at Rosalind and Kelsey for snacks and site-seeing. “We think everyone loves a train,” said Ken Eshpeter, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Battle River Railway. “We feel the local community support of this project
clearly demonstrates this love of trains.” The Battle River Railway story began in the fall of 2008 when farmers loading producer cars learned CN would no longer provide train service along the 50 mile strip that stretches from Alliance to Highway 56, just south of Camrose. The 185 producer car loaders decided to form the New Generation Co-op and purchased the line from CN. They then began selling shares under the title of ‘Battle River Railway’. Shares were sold to farmers, agricultural societies, seed plants, local businesses, people and municipalities. In total, the New Generation Co-op raised $3.5 million. With the money raised, combined with a loan from Agriculture Financial Services Corporation, the Battle River Railway Co-op bought
the 50 mile strip of line and the locomotive on December 14, 2010. With the addition of a passenger
car, the Battle River Railway line also moves liquid fertilizer, oil tankers and grain.
CASTOR COUNCIL
Council to decide on energy provider Bethany Zacharias
ECA Review Reporter At the end of 2013 the Town of Castor’s contract with energy provider Alberta Municipal Services Corporation (AMSC) will come to an end. The Town now has an option to buy into another one year or five year contract with AMSC or sign with 8760 Energy, an affiliate of the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties. “Once AMSC does the aggregation process, we will know what the price
will be per kilowatt hour,” said Sandi Jackson, CAO of the Town of Castor. The Town is hoping to lock into a fixed price, but they won’t know what that price will be until the last round of aggregation is done in mid-August. “A fixed price structured block will reduce our exposure to escalating energy prices,” said Jackson. Jackson said she will be watching the aggregation process over the next two weeks and will present more information to Council at the next meeting, July 22, 2013.

Ash has covered some of the words in the story below. Can you decide where each word here belongs?
It isn’t unusual for a fossil hunter to occasionally find a fossil or two, but when paleontologist Dr. Michael Voorhies was looking for fossils near Orchard, Neb., he found a lot more!
ore than 11 million years ago, a huge volcanic eruption in what is now Idaho blanketed northeastern Nebraska with about a foot of ash. Many of the animals in the area, which later came to be called Ashfall, were grass eaters. As they foraged through the ash to find and eat grass, they breathed in the fine, deadly ash.
Within a few days, their lungs had filled with ash, and they suffocated. Over the next few days, winds blew the loose ash around. Eventually the ash settled in the lowest places. The fossils that Voorhies found were in an ancient watering hole that got covered by about eight feet of ash. The ash covered the animals completely, keeping their remains safe from predators and other destruction for millions of years.
“Near sundown on a long day of fossil prospecting,” Voorhies remembers, “I was walking along the valley rim above a creek. In cuts and slopes, erosion had laid bare a bed of silvery gray volcanic ash— the fossil-bearing kind—sandwiched between layers of sandstone.” Voorhies discovered part of a baby rhinoceros skull sticking out of the ash. As Voorhies dug deeper, he found an entire baby rhinoceros skeleton! The skeleton was fully articulated, which means that all the bones were still intact and neatly laid out in order. Over the next few days, Voorhies and his team discovered 12 more complete skeletons from an area no larger than your classroom.
here is no other site in the world like Ashfall. Rhinos, horses, camels, birds, and turtles were all caught in the falling ash. Their quick death and burial preserved not only their skeletons, but in some cases the food in their stomachs when they died. The remains of undigested food help scientists understand the plant life and eating habits of animals that lived millions of years ago.
Look through today’s newspaper to find: • four common nouns • four proper nouns • four pronouns • four adjectives • four verbs
Drs. Heimdahl & ZoBell are pleased to announce D Voorhies had discovered the remains of mammals that were more than 11 million years old. These animals had died at a watering hole following a massive volcanic eruption in what is now the state of Idaho.

STETTLER COUNCIL
Troubles at 70th Street Brenda Schimke
ECA Review Reporter There has been an ongoing problem with commercial and passenger vehicles using the service road north of Highway 12, just west of 70th Street, as a shortcut to avoid the traffic lights at the intersection of 70th Street and Highway 12. On July 2, 2013 the Town of Stettler passed a motion to sign the road “Local Traffic Only”, giving the RCMP the authority to issue tickets for violations. Speed has also been an issue. The Town had previously asked the Transportation Department to reduce the speed limit to 50 km/hour. “If the lights were right, we wouldn’t be
having this problem,” said Councillor Steven Wildeboer. “I’ve seen more than eight vehicles backed up waiting for the light to change because of the infrequency of the green light going north and south.” A motion was unanimously passed to write a letter directly to the Transportation Minister, Hon. Ric McIvor, highlighting the need to make timely changes to what has become a very dangerous intersection. Parking lot sweeping The Town has provided free power sweeping for all businesses, institutions and churches since 1994 because there were no private providers. CAO, Rob Stoutenberg advised that currently about 20 parking lots are swept in the spring,
costing the town around $4,000. These include larger areas such as the mall, Walmart, motels, and organizations that do not pay taxes such as the Stettler Housing Authority Lodge, hospital and schools. WTS Manufacturing & Sales Inc., is interested in starting a business in the community offering parking lot power sweeping, line painting, pressure washing and welding. In a unanimous vote, councillors requested Administration to bring back an amended policy which would eliminate municipally-provided parking lot power sweeping, except for not-forprofits. If the option is there, councillors prefer the private sector do the job as a municipality’s mandate is to provide ser-
vices only up to property lines. A used compactor (asphalt roller) has been purchased by the Town for $63,000, including tax, and an additional $5,000 was budgeted to cover shipping fees, from Vulcan, Ab., and to service the machine. The existing roller is smaller and it is good for potholes and small compaction areas. The new purchase will be used to complete road oil projects and asphalt patches. Doctors There are two site visits planned for potential new doctors to Stettler, one on July 6 and another on July 22, 2013. Aubrey Brown, Executive Director, Stettler Regional Board of Trade and Community Development, is coordinating the visits.

Town bills Colony for ‘business license’ Local residents of Coronation were surprised to not find the Suncrest Colony Farms vegetable truck in its usual place near the post office on Tuesday, July 2. That’s because Suncrest Colony Farms received a bill two weeks prior to July 5 from the Town of Coronation, totalling $100, which would cover the cost for an annual business license for businesses located outside of Coronation. “The ‘new business’ by-law was rewritten three years ago to include all businesses,” said Town of Coronation CAO, Sandra Kulyk.
Mu
“The old by-law said agricultural producers didn’t have to pay the by-law fee,” continued Kulyk. Suncrest Colony Farms manager, Paul Hofer said this is the first year the colony received a bill for a business license. “We understand there is a demand for our product in Coronation,” said Hofer. “We plan to pay the fee and continue to sell our product in town.” In Coronation, a ‘business license’ is $50 annually for businesses located within town limits and $100 annually for businesses located outside. The colony truck only missed one day and were back in business Friday, July 5.

ALLIANCE
Quite an economic impact Diane Dammann It was pretty exciting to see the tourist train inaugural run come into town on Saturday. The group of passengers toured the town, went to the museum and had lunch at the Valley Inn. When a group of about 70 comes to a village the size of Alliance it makes quite an economic impact. Heisler has had three passenger trains stop in the last couple of weeks. Most of the passengers got off and bought ice cream That has to be a big business boost. The sidewalks in Alliance are done and they look very nice but Main Street looks a little bare without the trees. The big Spruce trees and flowering plum are still in front of the Valley Inn and also in front of the E.O. Lysne Manor but the ones out on the street are gone. There was a break in attempt at the grocery store on July 5 or 6. The thief or thieves did not get into the building but the lock on the front door was damaged and had to be replaced. There is new siding on the front of Main Street Medley. There will be a picnic after the church service on July 21. A general invitation is extended to all to come out and join us. It will be the kick off for the Children’s Summer Program. The program will run July 22 - 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. The Women’s Institute has a program called Take 10. It lists little things that take about 10 minutes to do to “grow a healthier you”. July’s Take 10 list is: celebrate July 1 with pride, plan a day at the beach, hunt for treasures at the beach, pick a bouquet of your garden flowers and share them with someone who doesn’t have a garden, stay at a bed and breakfast in your own province, visit a vacation farm in your area, visit your provinces tourism website or read their tourism brochures to
familiarize yourself with all that is available in your province and have a ‘stay-cation’.

Passed away peacefully in Victoria SUNDBERG, Hazel Mae March 26th, 1916 – May 5th, 2013 Hazel passed away peacefully in the Victoria Hospice. Hazel was born in Consort, Ab. and lived in Coronation, Ab. When Hazel was only 2 years old, her Father, Jack Maxfield, passed away during the 1918 flu epidemic. Hazel’s Mother, Inez Perkins, remarried to Bill Graydon in Coronation, who moved his new family to Calgary, Ab. where Hazel in Sundberg later years, attended Western Canada High School. Hazel met and married Lawrence George Sundberg in May 1937. During the few years in Calgary Sons Bob and Don were born. During the War the family moved to Victoria, B.C. where Larry worked for 2 ½ years at Yarrow’s Ship Yard. After this, they returned to Calgary where Daughter Linda was born and Larry set up his own shop. In August, 1980 Hazel and Larry
returned to Victoria, B.C. to start their retirement years. After Larry passed away in July 1985 Hazel kept busy knitting and participating in the “SHARPS” seniors’ group activities. Hazel is particularly proud of her contributions of hand-made “preemie” caps which were donated to Victoria Hospitals and “people dolls” which were donated to the Crige in Victoria. Hazel was predecease by son Bob (Maureen) in Jan. 2011 (Calgary, AB.). Hazel will be missed by Son Don (Vi) (Sicamous, B.C.), Daughter Linda (Eugene), (Lacombe, AB). Eight Grandchildren and 14 Great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Many thanks go to the compassionate and wonderfully skilled medical staff at Victoria Hospice who made Hazel’s Final Journey so peaceful. At Hazel’s request there will be no formal service. Hazel asked that donations be made to the Victoria Hospice Society.

OPINION
Making a difference Brenda Schimke
ECA Review Editorialist The Southern Alberta floods bear this fact out: it’s easier to recruit volunteers when a high profile event happens, such as downtown Calgary under water. Typically, volunteers are the ones who lead rescue and recovery efforts when disasters strike, so what is transpiring in Calgary and surrounding area is quite normal. But tragedies aside, Statistics Canada reports volunteering hours are stagnating in Canada and only a very small proportion of volunteers do most of the work. In fact, 10 per cent of volunteers accounted for 53 per cent of all the volunteer hours given in 2010. Tragedies aside, We need volunteers year Statistics Canada round. They continue to be a reports volunteering powerful economic and social hours are stagnating force in Canada. As more serin Canada. vices are downloaded unto charities and not-forprofits, volunteers are becoming even more critical. In April 2013, TD Economists, Craig Alexander and Sonya Gulati, reported that volunteering in Canada creates a minimum of $50 billion annually in economic value. They said, “If the value of volunteer work were a company, it would be in the league of the largest firms in Canada listed in the S&P/TSX Composite Index, sandwiched between corporate giants like Suncor Energy and Canadian National Railway.” An astounding statistic and to think that only 10 per cent provide 53 per cent of that total! Many of those who volunteered in Calgary and Southern Alberta over the past two weeks have never volunteered before. Let’s hope this newfound volunteerism will carry into other areas long after the media and hype is gone. Canada needs givers, selfless people and servant hearts to turn the tide on “meism” and consumerism--trends that have hurt our moral fabric for far too many years. Volunteers strengthen our communities and whether it is babysitting or shovelling snow for no pay, or working with a charity or local sports team, volunteers are the people who truly make our country a better place.

Environmentalists ignore impacts of renewables Recent research indicates that Texas wind farms cause more heating and climate change than the Keystone XL Pipeline; consequently prospects of the President approving Keystone look brighter for thousands of jobless Americans. Based on US State Department parameters, Keystone is calculated to potentially contribute just 0.00002 °C in 50 years, while Texas wind Farms have been shown to have increased local temperatures by 1°C, at the same time requiring inordinate amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) intense cement during construction. Anyone that is interested in helping out can meet at the High River Agricultural Society Rodeo Grounds. Volunteers are asked to bring their own supplies such as rubber boots, face masks, gloves, shovels, garbage bags and buckets. Aid to the community can come in many forms, not just physical labour. Donating to the Alberta Floods Fund through Canadian Red Cross is also a way to lend support to the victims. For information on donating please call the Red Cross at 1-800-418-1111. ECA REVIEW
Huge increase in the acres of crop sprayed with fungicide Agri-News Warm, moist conditions in spring over the last few years have caused a huge increase in the acres of crop sprayed with fungicide. As with most pesticides, the product has to be sprayed at the right time and correct rate to address the identified problem. Fungicides do not translocate as well as some herbicides, and sufficient water volumes are needed to get good plant coverage,” says Harry Brook, crop specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “To get the protection you are paying for, time of spraying is also crucial. Each particular crop disease needs to be treated at the appropriate time.” Blackleg of canola, once a debilitating canola disease, is making a comeback in Central Alberta. The crop has to be sprayed at the 2 to 6 leaf stage to be protected. Producers should look for spots on the leaves. For most canola crops, it is already too late to spray due to crop development. “If you are looking to protect a canola crop against sclerotinia, you need to wait until the canola is between 20 and 50 per cent full bloom,” says Brook. “For this disease, it is most effective to spray when you can maximize the number of flower petals that will be covered with the fungicide, thus preventing the sclerotinia organism from beginning growth. “This occurs well before the crop shows any symptoms and the decision to spray has to be evaluated on a number of factors to try and assess the potential risk. If there are enough risk factors present, the
decision to spray is made. As for timing, spraying will be done within the next week or 10 days.” Pulses need to be sprayed for disease when they show initial symptoms such as leaf spotting. Under the present weather conditions, pea diseases can rapidly spread and cut crop yields. On the cereals side, a lot of producers are being told to include a half rate of fungicide in with the herbicide when weed spraying. This would only be a good idea if the crop is already showing signs of disease at the 4 to 6 leaf stage. “There is no benefit in spraying fungicide if the crop shows no symptoms, and it might even be detrimental,” says Brook. “Using a pesticide when the pest is not visibly present may hasten the onset of resistance in the pest. Also, a half rate of pesticide can encourage moderately resistant organisms to thrive and overcome the particular mode of action of the pesticide.” The majority of diseases in cereals can be divided into those that affect the roots, usually seed or soil borne diseases, and those that affect the leaves and the filling of the head. Seed treatment will give protection for seed borne diseases and some root rots for a couple of weeks. Fungicide application on cereals to protect crop yield involves protecting the top two or three leaves from disease by spraying from flag leaf emergence to head emergence. The spray decision is based again on risk factors and also on presence of disease in the lower canopy. “The decision to spray with fungicides should never be a matter of routine,” says Brook.
Generic liquid Ivermectin for horses Agri-News Collaboration between Alberta Agriculture, Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency, Alberta Veterinary Labs, and Horse Industry Association of Alberta has led to the formulation of a generic liquid Ivermectin dewormer, called Ivermectin Liquid for Horses. The generic product is manufactured in Calgary. It is administered orally, either directly into the mouth with a syringe or top dressed on grain and fed to the horse. “Since it is a water-based product, horses will eat it when added to sweet feed. This is great news for horses that have been a problem to deworm,” states Merle Olson of Alberta Veterinary Labs. Horse owners can look forward to significant savings. Treatment with a brand name dewormer imported into Canada costs horse owners between $15-$30 dollars. Ivermectin Liquid for Horses will be available for a quarter of the cost, at around $5 for an average 500 kg horse. “Until recently a manufacturing plant of large volume, sterile and non-sterile, veterinary pharmaceuticals did not exist in Canada, creating a situation where these products had to be imported from other countries outside of Canada,” states Olson. “The lack of domestic manufacturing lead to artificially inflated pharmaceutical prices for Alberta livestock producers, but also the loss of jobs and revenue generation here in Alberta.”
“It is expected that the costs of deworming horses will also decrease as it did when these same people came out with a similar cattle product over 18 months ago,” says Les Burwash, manager of Horse Programs with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development.

“You have to assess risk in terms of crop rotations, varietal disease resistance, weather conditions, potential damage and costs versus benefits. Alberta’s current humid, warm conditions are perfect for the development of disease, but some field walking and thoughtful evaluation are still required to make the best decision for
your crop. “As with all pesticides, it is important to keep in mind the pre-harvest intervals when deciding to spray. With enough information, you can make the right decision and don’t forget that a good crop rotation can prevent a lot of disease problems from occurring.

Exhaustion-free gardening

Mowing, weeding, digging, planting, hoeing, pushing a wheelbarrow, and lifting bags of soil are all great ways
to stay in shape. In fact, gardening on a regular basis builds cardiovascular strength and endurance, improves flexibility and helps reduce stress. However, because you use lots of different muscles when gardening, it is a good idea to prepare for every session in order to prevent pain and avoid injury. First of all, warm up. The following are all good exercises, if you do them slowly and maintain the position for 10- 30 seconds: squats; Gardening on a regular basis builds cardiovascular strength and endurance, improves flexibility, and helps reduce stress.

forward bends (at an angle of 25° to 40°); and shoulder, neck, and back stretches. For optimal effect, repeat each stretch three times. Before heading out to the garden, think about the jobs you have to do and divide them up so as not to do all the most demanding tasks on the same day. You could decide to dig over a flower bed for a few minutes to strengthen your muscles and follow it up with a job

SPORT Shorts • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe. com: “Cleveland rookie linebacker Ausar Walcott was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted murder after he allegedly punched a man in the head last weekend. SLAP SHOTS
Canucks’ stunning move: Luongo stays Bruce Penton If Vancouver Canucks could somehow put that gigantic contract of Roberto Luongo’s between the pipes next season, new coach John Tortorella’s team might never give up a goal. Unfortunately, the massive 12-year contract extension he signed in 2009 sits in a file cabinet in the Canucks’ front office while Luongo tries to fill the space between the pipes and pretend he’s happy. If the Canucks and Luongo were a married couple, they’d Penton have separate bedrooms. How does Luongo feel, knowing he will be the starting goalie next year for the Canucks after realizing his contract made him untradeable last
year after the Canucks publicly tried and tried and tried to get rid of him? In fact, former backup Cory Schneider appeared to be so secure in his No. 1 role in the Canucks net that when Vancouver fans put together their list of ‘untouchables’, they started with Daniel and Henrik Sedin and then listed Schneider. But in one of the strangest turns of events during the NHL draft on June 30, the Canucks traded Schneider to New Jersey, giving up their 27-year-old goalie of the future and keeping the 34-year-old Luongo. One of them had to go: Ultimately, it was Schneider, because Luongo’s contract was like a huge anchor tying him to the Lower Mainland. No other NHL team would agree to take on the nine years and about $40 million
that remains on the contract signed four years ago by Luongo, whose skills are in rapid decline. In exchange for Schneider, the Canucks received a first-round draft pick that became Bo Horvat, an Ontario junior leaguer from London. (Another Vancouver first-rounder was Medicine Hat’s Hunter Shinkaruk.) Poor Schneider. He spent two years as backup to Luongo and now returns to a No. 2 role behind certain Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur in New Jersey. The Schneider trade was a continuation of the Gillis Follies, a series of questionable moves by general manager Mike Gillis, the object of scorn by many Canucks’ fans. Meanwhile, if Luongo can somehow use that contract as goalpad stuffing, it may work out for Vancouver after all.
