Police recover ‘items of interest’ from Battle River John MacNeil

Review Reporter RCMP divers recovered “items of particular interest” from the Battle River on the July 26-27 weekend, but police refused to identify what case they were investigating near the Big Knife Provincial Park. A dive team from the RCMP’s E Division in British Columbia spent the weekend combing the Battle River, Staff-Sgt. Ron Campbell of Alberta’s K Division confirmed July 28. “That was just the continuation of an ongoing investigation,” he said.

“It’s been going on for several months. “They were looking for items of particular interest, which I can say some were located, but I can’t reveal what those were.” Police wouldn’t say whether the river search was part of the investigation into the Klaus family farm triple murder near Castor last December. “It’s an ongoing investigation, and I’m not going to identify which one it is at this point, to protect the integrity of the investigation,” said Staff-Sgt. Campbell, the head of the strategic communications unit for K Division.

He revealed, however, that RCMP are close to making “a major announcement” in connection with the dive team’s findings.

Major announcement

“I was speaking with one of the investigators today and they plan on going public here probably within two weeks,” Staff-Sgt. Campbell said. “They’ll have a major announcement at that time. They’re just trying to put the pieces together here now. They should be ready in a couple of weeks to go public with what they found and why, and what it’s related to and all that stuff.” E Division divers spent “two or

three days over the weekend” searching the Battle River, Staff-Sgt. Campbell said. Three members of one Castor-area family — Gordon and Sandra Klaus and their adult daughter Monica — perished in a house fire at the Klaus farm Dec. 8, 2013. In February 2014, police said they believe the deaths were homicides, but they didn’t make any charges in the case. RCMP confirmed at the time that the remains of Gordon Klaus, 61, and Monica Klaus, 40, were found in the burnt-out house, but that the remains for Sandra Klaus, 62, hadn’t been located.

OBITUARY

Former Veteran mayor ‘possessed a quiet, sure faith’

THULIEN, Kermit E. 1917 — 2014 Kermit Thulien passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord earlier this spring. It would have been his 97th birthday this week. Kermit was a resident of Veteran for more than 63 years. He then retired to Lions Bay, B.C., in 1980, where he and his wife Jean spent 17 years before moving to nearby Vancouver for the past 16 years. Dad enjoyed his family and home, and with loving care from family, was able to stay in his home for 96 years. A lovely memorial was held in his honour at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Home in Vancouver. Kermit was a man who possessed a quiet and sure faith. He was a devoted husband and father, a successful businessman and an active member of the community. He owned and operated a farm implement and automobile dealership in Veteran for more than 35 years, preceded by some years as a grain buyer/ elevator agent in his early 20s. Kermit served in the local church in Veteran, as mayor and councillor for many years, as coach for young men’s hockey, and in many other aspects of community life. Yet, Dad still made time for many trips and countless family drives and picnics in the surrounding area, the Nose Hills, etc. After retiring to Lions Bay, he remained active in the community church and was asked to serve on the board of variance of the village for a number of years, where

his sound judgment was valued. Kermit was also a longtime member of the Gideon’s Society, placing Bibles in hotels, schools, hospitals and doctor’s offices as invited. One would have to look long and hard to find a person with such a generous spirit, and with grace and kindness in combination as Kermit possessed. He worked by the adage that a deal is only a good deal when it’s good for both parties. And often in business, he gave the benefit of the doubt to the customer. Dad was respected by all who knew him, loved by those who knew him well, and loved very much by those who knew him best. He’s greatly missed by his beloved wife of almost 69 years, Jean, his daughter Janice Fawcett (Alan) of Edmonton, son Cameron (Jane) of Vancouver, son Gavin (Jann) of Ottawa, and sister Lorraine Gilbert (Jim) of Abbotsford, B.C. As one who always enjoyed his garden and his home, it is a special comfort to know that now Dad is truly home, and we have the joyous prospect of being together again in a coming day. Kermit had a life well-lived and was an admirable yet humble man, and an example to many.

Card of thanks

The family would like to sincerely thank the many who have sent tributes, cards and condolences since his passing. It’s deeply appreciated.

rural Alberta. “People in the city are trying to get into small schools,” said Prentice, noting his high school graduation class had just eight students. Prentice, 58, has advocated a smaller cabinet for the Alberta government. “There’s not a province our size that has 30 cabinet ministers,” he said. He recommended a cure for provincial health-care administrative woes, suggesting a model that puts less authority in the hands of a single agency head. Prentice said local health-care advisory boards should report to the health minister to create a system representative of the community. He agreed with one man who expressed concern about the loss of emergency care at the Consort hospital. “I’ve heard about challenges in Consort … in one respect, I’m not surprised to hear about it,” Prentice said. “There are already enough challenges for rural Albertans. We shouldn’t be adding to those challenges.” Prentice said he doesn’t consider himself tied to the current provincial PC regime. “I do represent a clean slate. I come at this from the outside.”

None of the above

An East Central Alberta Review online poll asked readers to vote on who would make the best leader of the Alberta PC Party. The winner through Sunday, July 27, was “none of the above,” which accounted for 47 of the 77 votes. It’s otherwise a close race. Ric McIver received 13 votes, Thomas Lukaszuk garnered nine and Jim Prentice had eight.

Man dies east of Bashaw in two-vehicle collision John MacNeil

Review Reporter One man died in one of two crashes near Bashaw on the July 26-27 weekend. STARS air ambulance was needed to transport accident victims in both cases, Sgt. Cameron Paul of Bashaw RCMP reported Monday, July 28. An adult whose identity wasn’t immediately released died on the scene of a two-vehicle collision Sunday east of Bashaw on Highway 53 at Range Road 204, which leads to the Pelican Point campground. The man who died was a passenger in an eastbound SUV that turned left to go north on Range Road 204 and collided with a westbound SUV, Sgt. Paul said. “The driver of that vehicle was airlifted by STARS (and) three other occupants of that vehicle were taken (to hospital) by ground ambulance for

further treatment and assessment,” along with an occupant of the other SUV. The crash was reported to RCMP at 3:55 p.m. on Sunday. “Alcohol is not considered a factor, and weather and road conditions were favourable, so it’s a driving-error issue,” Sgt. Paul said. The occupants of both SUVs weren’t from the Bashaw area, he said. Bashaw RCMP also responded to an ATV accident shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday. The ATV rolled over on Range Road 231, and the 40-year-old driver was being treated for “numerous injuries” after he was transported to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Sgt. Paul said. “Alcohol was not suspected to be involved. And the investigation is still ongoing.”

Wacky weather postpones Castor rodeo to mid-August John MacNeil

Review Reporter With relentless rain and wild winds wreaking havoc throughout Alberta last Friday, July 25, the Castor rodeo didn’t get out of the bucking chutes. Organizers postponed the annual rodeo to Aug. 15 and 16, with a program matching the lineup intended for July 25 and 26. “Everything will go forward as planned, just a different day and maybe a bit of tweaking of the time,” said Heide Andersen, secretary of the Castor and District Ag Society’s 37th annual family rodeo. “The parade will carry on as usual, as well as the rodeo and the gymkhana for the other members.” The rescheduled times for the two midAugust rodeo performances were still to be finalized early this week. “We haven’t come to a 100 per cent plan yet,” Andersen said Sunday, July 27. “There’s four other rodeos on within the LRA (Lakeland Rodeo Association) and WRA (Wildrose Rodeo Association) circuits, for that weekend, so we have to try and figure out the best time to run our performances, in order for the cowboys to make as many of the rodeos … as possible. “Tentatively, we’re going with slack on Friday morning, with the rodeo performances Friday evening and Saturday at 1 o’clock, but that’s not confirmed yet.” A colourful rainbow draped the Castor rodeo grounds, four miles north of town, at 6 p.m. last Friday, but most of the day was deluged with heavy rain, strong winds and cool temperatures. Weather was just one of the factors in deciding earlier Friday to postpone the rodeo, Andersen said. “I mean, cowboys are used to performing in a lot of (adverse) conditions,”

she said. “And I’m sure they would have been able to manage with the conditions that day. “But for the rodeo committee, our goal is to make our rodeo able to cover expenses. We don’t ever make a lot of money with our rodeo. We need to cover our expenses, though. And with weather like that, we wouldn’t get spectators coming in the gate and we wouldn’t get people attending the beer gardens and we wouldn’t get people buying the food at the concession. “So we thought this was the best decision we could make, from that aspect of things. There’s no doubt that the rodeo could have carried on. We have really great facilities and volunteers that would have been able to pull it off, but from a financial standpoint, we were just worried we would take too big of a loss to run the rodeo that weekend.” Last weekend wasn’t a total wipeout for the Castor rodeo, which managed to stage its opening-night family dance, with Prairie Fire performing at the Castor community hall, instead of at the rodeo grounds. “It wasn’t an ideal situation, but we tried to make the best of it,” Andersen said. “We ended up going forward with the family dance and supper that night, and it was a lot more successful than we could have hoped. It was a really well-attended event and everybody had a lot of fun. We had lots of food and the kids and adults alike really enjoyed listening to the live band and dancing. “Even though it was last minute, it worked out really well.” Organizers tried to spread the word last Friday that the rodeo was postponed to mid-August. “We did the best we could with notifying everyone ... as fast as we could so we could help spread the word,” Andersen said.

The birds are taking flight in Stettler. The release of 3,000 birds is among the highlights planned for the first Canadian Badlands Pheasant Festival, scheduled for Oct. 15-19 in Stettler. “This is a great opportunity to showcase our community and provide economic benefit to our local business on an annual basis,” chairman Darcy Pollack said July 25 in announcing the festival. “With a 3,000-bird release, including 300 hens, we will also be making a significant conservation effort with regards to our local pheasant population.”

Canadian Badlands president Bob Long said the organization hopes the five-day Stettler event is “the first of many pheasant festivals” in the group’s membership communities. “Canadian Badlands is pleased to be supporting the community of Stettler as they host the first Canadian Badlands Pheasant Festival. We are always striving to bring value to our members by promoting tourism in this unique and important part of Alberta.” More information on the organization is available at canadianbadlands.com.

I would like to thank the Coronation community for all the support, positive thoughts and prayers. On June 6, 2014, our world was turned upside down. Exactly one week after we proudly watched Harmony graduate, she was hit by a car and we were watching her fight for her life. The doctors were skeptical, and the outcome was uncertain. Surrounded by close friends and family, I prayed, I begged and I pleaded that she would not be taken from me. As the days passed, we started receiving well-wishes, love and support from all around. But I

was overwhelmed by all the support we received from the town I grew up in. The financial support we received from everyone involved in the fundraisers, and the generous donations made by local businesses, made it possible for Harmony’s family to stay by her side during her amazing recovery. I believe a huge part of her recovery is due to all the positive thoughts and prayers sent her way ... they found her! There are just too many people to thank, so I hope this expression of gratitude finds you. Sincerely, Lynn (Towns), Chloe, Harmony and her Really Big Family

On Monday, July 28, the centennial of the outbreak of the First World War, a unique battlefield artefact went on display at The Military Museums: a letter written home by Canadian solder Edward Iley on the fabric from the wing of a German aircraft his unit shot down. University of Calgary student Michael Hilton, Iley’s greatgrandson, donated the letter to The Military Museums. He stumbled upon it by accident and consulted war diaries and other documents in the university’s library and archives at The Military Museums

to research Edward Iley’s unit, the Canadian 12th Railroad Division. Hilton’s research turned up just two more letters in the world — located in France and Australia — that were written on the fabric of airplane wings. His great-grandfather’s letter, along with a pocket watch belonging to the German gunner of the plane, are among 300 artefacts from the First World War going on public display, starting Monday, at The Military Museums in the exhibition Wild Rose Overseas: Albertans in the Great War.

Royals fight back to earn provincial gold John MacNeil

That victory via the mercy rule all but guaranteed Coronation top spot in its three-team pool, and made Sunday morning’s 8-4 loss to Bawlf less significant. “We got lots of guys on the field and saved our two better pitchers for the semifinal and the final, so it worked out in our favour,” coach Brown said of the Bawlf game. With his son (and Zimmer) graduating, it was Brown’s swan song as the midget team’s coach. “It was a great way to go out, that’s for sure,” he said. Scouts from Tier 1 and Tier 2

teams watched the Tier 3 provincials and might call on the likes of Zimmer and Brown for pitching depth in their respective provincials on the Aug. 1-3 weekend. “Trey will be drafted, for sure,” coach Brown said. “He played Tier 1 last year.” The Tier 1 and 2 tournaments are set for Fort Saskatchewan and Okotoks, respectively. The Clive Coyotes, featuring players from east-central Alberta, are among the Tier 1 contenders.

Bulls go for provincial gold at home John MacNeil

Review Reporter The East Central Bulls are sitting pretty as they host the provincial bantam AA Tier 1 baseball championship Aug. 1-3 in Stettler. The Bulls have been the pacesetters in Baseball Alberta play this season, posting a 17-1 record that includes a 6-0 slate in Round 3. “I think we have a pretty good chance in provincials,” said Bulls second baseman Carver Zimmer of Coronation. “If we play like we have been all year, I think we have a good shot. “When everyone is in ready position and battin’ good, and playing good defence, (we’re at our best).”

Zimmer, a first-year bantam who just turned 14 on July 2, thrives on the action in the middle infield. “I like turning double plays with (shortstop) Brendan Logan,” said Zimmer, who is going into Grade 9. Zimmer, also a hockey and volleyball player, is following in big brother Trey’s athletic footsteps. On the diamond, Carver is also a starting pitcher and a switchhitter whom head coach Graham Schetzsle describes as an allaround ball player. In this weekend’s eight-team provincial tournament, the Veteran-based Bulls expect Red Deer and Camrose to be among the strongest opponents, Zimmer said. “Red Deer was in Tier 2, but

they came up to Tier 1. They were the only team to beat us all year.” The Bulls are a regional team made up of 12 players from widespread parts of east-central Alberta. “It’s a better opportunity, better competition,” Zimmer said of playing at the bantam AA Tier 1 level. East Central is in Pool A with North Peace, Red Deer and St. Albert. Pool B is made up of Camrose Royal, Edmonton and two South Jasper Place teams. In preliminary play, the Bulls face St. Albert at 6 p.m. Friday, Red Deer at noon Saturday and North Peace at 6 p.m. Saturday. Playoff action is scheduled for Sunday, with the gold-medal game

Pitching depth fuels East Central bantams John MacNeil

Review Reporter Potent pitching is expected to work favourably for the East Central Bulls as they host the provincial bantam AA Tier 1 baseball championship Aug. 1-3 in Stettler. The Bulls can count on multiple arms to deliver the goods in starting and relief roles. “We really have eight legitimate arms,” said coach Graham Schetzsle. “Without naming names, we’ve got four or five kids that I would trust to start in a semifinal or a final, and there’s three other kids that are right there that throw strikes. “They’re not quite as dominant, but I would trust them in virtually any situation, as well. “And I think that’s going to be our advantage when it comes to (this) weekend. Whether we win or we lose, I believe we’ll have as much pitching (depth) as anybody.” Along with pitching riches, the Bulls are strong at all positions, defensively and offensively. Schetzsle gave a breakdown of his 12-man roster, by position:

CATCHER

“Our starting catcher is Gavin Logan (Oyen). He’s got a remarkable throwing arm. He’s just a first-year kid. I would categorize him as one of the top 14-year-old catchers in the province. “Josh Fawcett (Consort) is a second-year bantam. He’s a big, strong kid who hits in the middle of our lineup. He’s been probably

our most consistent hitter all year long. When he’s not catching, he plays a little bit of outfield.”

FIRST BASE

“My own son, Hayden (Schetzsle, Veteran), he’s very good defensively. He’s not a powerhitter, but he makes contact and has a pretty good line-drive swing.”

SECOND BASE

“Carver Zimmer (Coronation) is very good defensively and runs well. He’s a very good all-around ball player. He’s one of our top pitchers, as well. “Robby Gilbertson (Brownfield) also plays second base. He’s just a natural athlete. The kid can just flat-out run and do things that a lot of other kids can’t do.”

SHORTSTOP

“Brendan Logan (Oyen), one of our top pitchers, is also our starting shortstop. The only downside to when he’s pitching, he’s not at shortstop, and we miss him when he’s not at shortstop, because he’s defensively awesome. “(When Brendan Logan is pitching), Carver Zimmer will usually slide over to short.”

THIRD BASE

“Typically, we have Damon Zimmer (Daysland), who is a pitcher also. He hits in the middle of our lineup. He’s a good pitcher who throws lots of strikes. He’s been hot at the plate as of late and we’ll need him to continue that to

have a chance. “Paul Georget (Stettler), another third baseman, he’s also hitting in the middle of our lineup. He’s got great velocity as a pitcher and he’s a very good all-around player. He’s strong — he can hit the ball with some thump.”

OUTFIELD

“Parker Grabler (Czar) has been very solid in centre-field. He tracks the ball well. He started off the year (hitting) well — he’s going through some tough times now, but we hope he’ll be ready for (this) weekend. “Same thing with Brandon Buxton (Amisk). He’s a sparkplug when he gets on base. He can fly. He makes things happen when he’s on. He’s struggled as of late, hitting, but all he has to do is put the ball in play and he can make things happen, because he does run so well and he’s been pitching very well for us. “Nick Brigley (Coronation) has been playing the outfield. He’s coming along defensively. He’s not physically strong, but he puts the ball in play and he’s a real battler. He’s a gamer. He wants to play and you never have to worry about him not being in the game. “Taylor Frank (Castor), when he’s playing outfield and a little bit of first base, he’s decent defensively. He puts the ball in play, at the plate, as well. His hitting has been improving and he’s been pitching phenomenally. He’s been one of our most consistent pitchers all year long.”

at 3 p.m., or 5 p.m. if tiebreakers are needed. “It all comes down to one game on Sunday, whether it be the semifinal or the final,” Schetzsle said. “Anything can happen. There’s lots of other good teams. We’ll do our best. “We just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing all year, which is throwing lots of strikes and playing airtight defence. We had a little lapse (two weekends ago), but other than that, the boys have played really sound defensively. That’s our game, and we usually scratch out enough runs, so we’ll go with the same formula (this) weekend.” After playing the entire regular season on the road, mostly at Edmonton-area parks, the Bulls are relatively close to home in Stettler, the hometown of one East Central player — pitcher and third baseman Paul Georget. Georget’s father, Collin, led the effort to bring the provincials to Stettler, and he’s chairing the tournament. “He’s a great organizer, and without him, we wouldn’t even

be thinking of (hosting),” Schetzsle said of Georget. “We’ve been on the road all year long, and that’s OK. But it will be nicer to play a little bit closer to home, especially for some of the local people. I think we’ll have a good local following of spectators.” Along with Coronation and Stettler, the Bulls include players from Amisk, Brownfield, Castor, Consort, Czar, Daysland, Oyen and Veteran. Schetzsle is from Veteran. His assistants are Barry Logan of Oyen, Trevor Fawcett of Consort and Brad Zimmer of Daysland.

Summer Games

At the Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie, Oyen cousins Brendan and Gavin Logan won bronze medals with Zone 2, which defeated Zone 4 (including Stettler’s Paul Georget) 10-0 in the third-place game. A fourth member of the Bulls, Brandon Buxton of Amisk, played with Zone 7, which placed seventh in the eight-team tournament.

representative for the company. In 2003 he bought a car from Mike Rodin, who is now the dealer principal. It was a 300M and the best car he’s ever owned. “Never missed a beat,” says Ed. “and still going strong.” After a life of working in the oil patch and driving trucks, Ed decided to take it a little easier. All those jangled miles on the road were taking a toll on his lower back. However, life in his recliner was tougher on him than bouncing around on a long haul, so he picked up the phone and called Mike, wondering if they had any opportunities. A new door opened. “Here I am,” says Ed with a big friendly smile. “It’s a blessing.” He absolutely enjoys the work, meeting people and staying vital. If you’re looking for a new vehicle, give Ed a call. You’ll be impressed by how hard he’ll work for you.
