Savour the Flavour at this Year’s Taste of the Kingsway Festival Experience Food and Entertainment at its Finest

The award winning Taste of the Kingsway Festival is just around the corner! This weekend long culinary festival takes place Friday September 6th through to Sunday September 8th. The Kingsway BIA, in association with Humberview, Mantella Corporation, and Westhaven Townhomes, proudly present the Taste of the Kingsway festival. The Taste runs along Bloor Street West, between Prince Edward Drive and Montgomery Road. With over 200 exhibitors participating in this year’s festival, there is so much to see, experience and taste at the Taste of the Kingsway. Come out to experience delicious food, live entertainment, and fun activities for all ages!

Aside from the mouthwatering dishes from the various restaurants, attendees can enjoy the array of entertainment the Taste has to offer including the famous Scotiabank Dog Show, rock climbing wall and Midway carnival rides and games.

Live entertainment at the Taste will be in full swing this year, with two main stages set-up. The festival will feature live entertainment, including performances from well-known artists, performers and musicians. You won’t want to miss the talented buskers and street performers parading Bloor Street West. Another popular hang out at the Taste is the beer and wine gardens along Bloor Street.

There is so much for children to see and experience at the Taste of the Kingsway. The Kids Zone is a popular designation for kids of all ages. The popular Kingsley the Kingsway Bear will be posing for photos. Everyone can experience and enjoy the various markets, artisans and crafters pavilions, vehicle displays, boxing, taekwondo and fitness demonstrations, and various community exhibits. Local Homecare Services Provider receives Accreditation Status Wendy Nicklin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Accreditation Canada have extended her sincerest congratulations to Premier Homecare Services for their participation in the Qmentum accreditation program.

Savour the Flavour

continued from front cover Many of the Kingsway’s celebrated restaurants and street vendors will be serving delicious samples of international cuisines. An Outdoor Fresh Market and the Dairy Farmers of Canada Hands on Kitchen are among the many attractions that continue to draw over 200,000 people to the festival each year. The festival benefits not only the community but also local businesses and charities.

Businesses will be showcasing their products on the street and offering sales to draw in more customers, thereby giving businesses additional exposure. The Taste also gives back, supporting local charities, including the Annual Pancake Breakfast with proceeds this year going to the Dorothy Ley Hospice program.

With the Kingsway’s strong English influences both in Food and Architecture, the English theme has been added to the 2013 Taste of the Kingsway. This theme allows patrons to embrace and acknowledge the neighbourhoods strong English Roots. Englishmen Robert Home Smith, a resident of Etobicoke a century ago, largely developed the Kingsway. Smith envisioned the Kingsway as an affluent neighbourhood with an English design, calling it “a little bit of England far from England”. Let’s celebrate the Kingsway’s origins by playing the part; come to the Taste dressed up like royalty!

The Taste also celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the Kingsway BIA with a ‘Now and Then’ tent to commemorate the area’s long-standing history and showcase how the Kingsway has evolved over the years. The Etobicoke Historical Society will be on hand to answer your questions about the Kingsway and its rich history. Visit the tent to view the showcase of photos capturing the Kingsway’s finest moment.

The Kingsway BIA would like to thank all of the dedicated volunteers and sponsors who help make this event possible. When attending the Taste this September, avoid the hassle of trying to find parking and leave your car at home. Take the TTC to Royal York Station where the Taste is conveniently located. Please note: the hours of the Taste of the Kingsway festival this year have been extended on Friday and Saturday night until 10 p.m. The festival operates: Friday, September 6th from 6:00p.m. to 10:00p.m., Saturday, September 7th from 11:00a.m.

The man I never seemed to find time for, had all along planned for me to take over his practice. He felt, that I would carry on with the same attention to detail for his clients as he had done for so many years. Thankfully, his family helped me do just that!

To understand the importance of proper examinations and eyewear, let me take you on a journey of how we have come to be recognized as leaders in the field.

I started working with Dr. Jarvis in 1986, fitting patients with contact lenses. At that time, Peter Wyckoff was the premier contact lens fitter and I was the fortunate beneficiary of his genius tutelage and mentoring. His practice was one of the few specialty lens fitting clinics in the city and he, as well as his company, LENS DESIGN, were well known and respected among the community and city at large. Thousands of patients who were fitted with contact lenses never forgot the experience or Peter.

We, as the new owners, of Lens Design are not new in the neighbourhood.

Beaulieu Vision Care has been in the Kingsway for over 35 years. Now with the addition of the custom fitted medical contact lens practice, we offer a complete eye care regime.

This was a man I admired and wanted to emulate. As a result of that experience, I vowed to learn and perfect the lens fitting techniques he so generously shared with me.

When Peter decided to retire, we had a celebratory lunch at Swiss Chalet. I was surprised when he suggested I take over the practice, because I know it would have meant taking over where he left off. Those were big shoes to fill, and I was not ready for a retail type practice. I was content with current situation. My association with Dr. Jarvis and Dr. Smythe, also with the credit valley eye associates Dr. Miller, Dr. Vettese and my work with the college of opticians chair of Competency and Examination. It just was not the right time for me to take over his practice, but I was happy to hear that Chris Pachul, a long time friend with whom I had worked with briefly at Eatons Yorkdale Optical Department. We had very similar working styles and both chose the best lab and lens materials to work with. We had a great deal of respect for the Optical industry we would often share our ideas, and even discussed amalgamating our businesses, but we didn’t have time to plan such an undertaking.

This is one of the things I regret, not making the time to have lunch with Chris.

There were no shortages of restaurants in the Kingsway, but we just never seemed to have the time. When Chris was diagnosed with Liver Cancer, he needed some time off and asked if I could give him a hand. Specifically he wanted me to handle his more complicated contact lens fittings. He did not want to leave his patients uncared for, because he cared deeply for them.

On Friday, September 6 at 8 pm, Lens Design will host a celebration of Chris Pachuls life, All are welcomed to reminisce, meet and hear from his family. The Guest of honour will be Peter Wyckoff. This is our way of bidding a fond farewell to Chris, a welcome return to Peter and the grand re-opening of Lens Design.

Chris passed away in August of 2012, and during the few months that I worked at Lens Design, it was clear to see that Chris Pachul was a very Talented Eye Care Provider that cared for his patients deeply. After his death, meeting his family, further confirmed his loyalty to his profession and love for his family and many friends.

It is with great pleasure that I present to you the 2013 Taste of the Kingsway (TOTK). Every year we make it bigger and better, to suite and connect to the character of this community, and give something for everyone that visits.

Please, take a walk and see all the beautiful churches. As a business community we are very blessed with so many places where one can calm the mind and lighten the heart and spirit. Some of the best ideas have been born in Church basements, including the Taste of the Kingsway Festival. It was a local church that started this community event, inviting one and all to join in.

At the Taste be sure to check out the lineup of entertainment on the stages. Take a look at the historic tent, to see the Kingsway then and now. You are invited to walk in to the businesses and ask if they have a Kingsway special. You may be pleasantly surprised as to what you are offered just by asking.

To truly get a taste of the KINGSWAY, you should visit as many businesses as you can.

The Kingsway is unique with its medians and overflowing with flowers more so than any other business community. Did you know that because of the medians, there is a significant drop in the road pedestrian casualties? We hope you take the time to visit us during the street festival, and we invite you to come during other times of the year. Along the Kingsway you will find very friendly merchants and real neighbours.

Here is the lineup of exciting events happening in the Kingsway this fall: The Annual Bed Race will take place in October in support of the Dorothy Lea Hospice. Saturday, October 26th is Pumpkin Fest where awards will be given for best costume and best pumpkin decoration.

On November 23rd, 2013 at 1:30 p.m., Our Lady of Sorrows hosts Carolling in the Kingsway in support of the Out of the Cold Program. This non-ticketed annual Christmas Concert has graced the Kingsway for over 12 years. The concert is a standing room only, non-denominational Christmas concert. Choirs from 6 local churches are under the leadership of the talented Conductor, Shawn Grenke. People come back year after year for this charity concert, as it is that good. Come out to experience this beautiful Christmas concert and support a good cause!

Check out the restaurants after the concert on November 23rd and later join us at 6:30 p.m. for the Cavalcade of Lights ceremony. We will have a real Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

The Kingsway is full of service-oriented businesses. Please walk in to a nail spa and get polished up. • Between 1906 and 1912, Robert Home Smith bought 3000 acres of land along the Humber River between Eglinton and Lake Ontario, which he developed into subdivisions such as Baby Point, Riverside Drive and Kingsway Park (now usually just called “The Kingsway”.)

The Importance of Eye Exams

By Bernard Trottier, MP Etobicoke-Lakeshore I was delighted to participate in the ribbon-cutting for Phase 2 of the Mimico Waterfront Park at the beginning of June.

Having your eyes checked regularly is an essential part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle because there is nothing more precious than your vision.

Connecting Humber Bay Shores Park with the first phase of the Mimico Waterfront Park, we now can enjoy a continuous recreational amenity from Grand Harbour to Norris Crescent Parkette. The project was a great demonstration of collaboration between the Toronto Region Conservation Authority, Waterfront Toronto and all three levels of government.

Eye examinations are important for people of all ages and people of all degrees of physical health.

An eye care professional can be the first to discover and treat any eye diseases as well as being able to detect common chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Revitalization of the waterfront of Canada’s largest city remains a priority for the federal government. Each level of government has committed $500 million in seed money and has given Waterfront Toronto effective development control over government-owned lands along the shores of Lake Ontario within the City of Toronto. The revitalization of Toronto’s waterfront is the largest urban redevelopment project currently underway in North America, comprising over 800 hectares – 4 times the size of Monaco. The pace of change along the waterfront is accelerating as we prepare to welcome Pan Am / ParaPan Am Games visitors in July and August of 2015, with the redevelopment of the West Don Lands for the Athletes’ Village.

Eye exams are especially important for children. Children should first have their eye examination at 6 months old. Yearly eye examinations for school aged children are important to confirm proper development as well as to maximize academic success. Children who have eye problems may be struggling with schoolwork and may not be aware that their vision is restricting them from achieving their potential in school.

Eye examinations are also essential for those who work with computers. Spending over 6 hours a day looking at a computer screen can be demanding on your eyes. Frequent computer use and cause fatigue, eyestrain, headaches and dry eyes. An eye care professional can give you proper computer eyewear and advice on computer usage along with promoting preventative eye health for those individual who use technology frequently at home or at work.

Often I am asked about the federal government’s involvement in making our city even greater. Perhaps the federal government is less visible to residents of Etobicoke-Lakeshore than the municipal and provincial governments, due to our seat of activity in Ottawa. However, I can assure you that the federal government’s support for Toronto is large and consistent. Since 2006, the federal government has invested over $4.5 billion in infrastructure in the GTA, with noteworthy projects including $622 million for the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension, $250 million for GO Transit improvements and $133 million for Union Station Revitalization. It includes $2.2 billion in Gas Tax funds directly to GTA municipalities, of which more than $1 billion was for the City of Toronto. In addition, the federal government has contributed over $700 million to the Public Transit Fund and Public Transit Capital Trust to the Province of Ontario since 2006. We’re helping Toronto get moving!

There are several aspects to a proper professional eye exam. The first part of an eye exam involves several screening tests including: visual field testing, color vision testing and depth perception testing. In the second part of an eye exam, the doctor will determine your prescription for glasses. Contact lenses can be fit if desired and if the patient is a good candidate for wearing contact lenses. In the final part of an eye exam the eye care physician will check the health of the patient’s eyes. The doctor will examine both the front segment and the back of the eye including the retina. This examination will be able to determine if there are any eye diseases present including: dry eye, conjunctivitis (superficial eye infection), cataracts, glaucoma or macular degeneration.

Back to the subject of parks, the federal government announced in the Throne Speech of May 2011 that we would create the Rouge National Urban Park. Much of 2012 was spent conducting consultations, and Parks Canada is now working on the park concept and vision. The Rouge Park is a first of its kind in Canada, being our only national urban park – with 20% of Canada’s population within easy reach (and accessible by transit.) The Park will be 5600 hectares in area, or more than 13 times the area of Stanley Park in Vancouver. Rouge Park will be a tremendous addition to our city, and will allow us to connect to our country’s rich natural heritage.

An optometrist can diagnose and treat eye related diseases and also specializes in determining glasses prescriptions and fitting contacts. Diabetes and Your Eyes

Diabetes is the single largest cause of blindness in Canada.

The guidelines that I’ve always promoted in my business and have explained how to achieve what you and your family requires to make a lifestyle and/or environment transitions that will best suit your needs and wants. In essence, it is about making the decision that most makes sense to you, and not one that is dictated by the media.

Yes, you read that correctly. Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to produce (or use) insulin to help control blood sugar levels. We need blood sugar (glucose) to energize our body’s cells. But, too much glucose in our blood for a long time can cause damage to many organs including the heart, kidneys, blood vessels and the small blood vessels in the eyes.

I have written about how your goals and dreams can become reality by having the right people on your side. From the Real Estate Professional to the Financial Advisor, to the Interior Decorator, it’s about who is best suited to helping you fulfill your real estate needs and wants and make a strong and critical change in your and your family’s life.

Diabetic retinopathy, the most common diabetic eye disease, is when the blood vessels in the retina swell or leak fluid or close off completely. Sometimes, abnormal and weak new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. These new blood vessels break up and leak blood into the eye so the retina cannot project images to the brain. At first, diabetic retinopathy may cause no symptoms or only mild vision problems. Once this leakage occurs, it can lead to blindness.

SOME VERY IMPORTANT TIPS ON CHOOSING YOUR MILLWORK

Diabetic retinopathy can develop in anyone who has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

Maintaining optimal blood glucose levels (A1C of 7.0 or less) and visiting your optometrist at least once a year is recommended. Some optometrists may recommend more frequent exams. Women with type 1 or type 2 who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant should be screened before conception, during the first trimester, and as recommended during pregnancy and post-partum.

When choosing the cabinets for your kitchen or bathrooms, or maybe for a cozy corner or reading area in your living room, it is important to speak to a knowledgeable person that understands the different “species” of cabinetry. Of course, which product you choose can be a base for all subsequent decisions such as colour, texture and themes of the room. Make sure you know what it is that you want to accomplish first.

Diabetes is part of my life. My daughter has Type 1 diabetes and is insulin dependent. Diabetes has taught my family how to eat, how not to eat, and the importance of good overall health. It’s hard fighting with a 5 year old about sugar.

But when I research all the damage done by high blood glucose levels, I find myself in a position to emphasize the importance of an annual eye examination.

After a long search, the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to appoint Denis Mastromonaco as its new Music Director.

Local Contractor renovates INSTYLE and on schedule

Rico Bumbaca and Rico of Italy Hair Salon and Spa: 50 Fabulous Years

With Fall just around the corner, construction bins are popping up all over The Kingsway, Thorncrest Village and Princess Anne Manor and contractors will be setting up shop for another busy season.

At the age of 17, Federico Bumbaca, commonly known as Rico, left Siderno, a town in southern Italy, to join his two brothers, Joseph and Michael who were already in Canada.

Local residence and owners of Instyle Kitchens and Bathroom, Michael Lamarche and Gerry Turino, have been renovating in the area for over 12 years. With over 400 completed local renovation projects they have strong support from past clients who are now acting as references for their renovations of local kitchens, bathroom, basements, additions and large custom homes (see updated website www.ikb.ca for details).

He began working at Joseph’s Coiffures, his brother’s beauty salon, located in the Kingsway.

This is where he met Rita, another talented hair stylist.

Seven years later, in 1963, he opened Rico of Italy Hair Salon and Spa at 2989 Bloor Street West, in the heart of the Kingsway. Two months later, Rico and Rita were married. Fifty years later, they now have three sons, Riccardo, Domenico, and Leonardo, daughters-in-law and seven grandchildren.
