The Shorefront Festival The Second Annual Shorefront Festival sponsored by the Lakeshore Village BIA is happening on Saturday, September 6th from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Shorefront Festival is a free, family friendly, fun filled event for all ages. Events are happening across Lake Shore Boulevard West, from First Street to Twelfth Street. Visit the Shorefront Festival to experience Star of the Shore Talent Competition, Youth Zone, Kids Zone, Artisans, Newfie Corner, Beer Tent, Market Place and so much more…

Once again STAR OF THE SHORE – YOUTH TALENT CONTEST is a part of the Shorefront Festival Star of the Shore! A youth talent contest for singers ages 8 to 18 will take place on the main stage. Star of the Shore is hosted by celebrity host and judge Farley Flex (former judge of Canadian Idol pictured at right). Last year was the first time The Shorefront Festival hosted the Star of the Shore and it was a great success with performers of all ages!

The event is continuing the tradition and is excited to have Farley back as host. Farley gave valuable advice to the contestants and with his knowledge and experience provides a wealth of knowledge to this event. First prize is $500 to the winning contestant!

Shop the Shore – from its initial beginnings as a community driven event to encourage and promote local business along the Lakeshore.

Each year the festival has expanded and grown and is now organized by the Lakeshore Village BIA. They have kept the focus on FREE Family Fun and have added new elements so that there is something for everyone.

An Evening of Elvis on the Main Stage - Come listen and swoon to two of the Best Elvis Tribute artists around. You can dance, sing along or just listen and have a great time.

NEW - Newfie Corner – The Lakeshore area has always had a strong and proud community of Newfoundlanders and in celebration of the East Coast Heritage, they have comedy, live music and a beer tent.

NEW – Youth Zone - For the kid in all of us there are carnival games and challenges including the classic Strong Man Bell and more.

Market Lane – Shop and explore products local artisans and businesses have to offer. From custom jewellery to new product ideas and arts. This market is a great way to kick off any early Christmas shopping.

Once again favourites return including the popular Kids Zone with games and activities and Community Corner with Military Displays and Fire Safety. There will be live music all day at the main stage.

Small business affected by this year’s crazy weather Plummeting winter temperatures, loads of snow and recent rainy and cold spells this summer have posed numerous challenges for small businesses across the Lakeshore. From a small business perspective, the weather has had significant impact on the bottom line this year.

Many small businesses have grappled not only with the weather this year but other issues like disruption to roads and public transportation, making it a struggle for customers to shop locally.

Businesses can be affected by both good and bad weather. Consumer’s behaviors change during different weather conditions and this affects retailers, restaurants and pubs, and in fact all types of small businesses are directly influenced by how their customers react to the weather.

Bernard Trottier Hosts the Annual Gems of the Lakeshore Awards Ceremony A Wonderful Evening Recognizing Local Business Excellence On July 10, 2014 Bernard Trottier, Member of Parliament for Etobicoke – Lakeshore and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services, was honoured to host the annual Gems of Etobicoke-Lakeshore awards ceremony .

Community Service – Village Mosaic The Village Mosaic is run by the Sisters of St. Joseph. It is a welcoming place for seniors to stay connected and stay active. Seniors can take part in a variety of activities, including light exercise, computers, crafts and line dancing.

Retail – Mimico Pharmacy The managers and cashiers of Mimico Pharmacy are always smiling and always helpful. They give advice without any vested interest. The atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming.

Nominations were open for two months and the general public was invited to nominate businesses and community organizations they felt deserved to be recognized for their outstanding service. All nominations were evaluated and winners selected by an independent judging panel which consisted of members from the various Business Improvement Areas along with other community leaders.

New Business – Maurya East Indian Roti Maurya’s offers a variety of delicious foods with lots of options. Whether you dine-in or take-out, the service is quick and courteous.

“We are blessed here in Etobicoke – Lakeshore to be home to some of the finest small and medium sized businesses in Canada”, stated MP Trottier. “It is an honour to pay tribute to the excellent work these businesses do and to the richness that they add to our community. Community Corner Ukrainian Project CTO Project CTO - that means “one hundred” in Ukrainian - commemorated the 100th anniversary of the War Measures Act. 11 am on Friday August 22nd marked the 100th Anniversary of Canada’s First National Internment Operations. A first ever event in Canadian history, 100 plaques were unveiled at the same date and same time from coast to coast to commemorate the event.

The Retro Ramblers in concert at Humber Valley United Church Are you feeling nostalgic for the old Barbershop and Doo Wop music? Come to Humber Valley United Church, 76 Anglesey Blvd. on Saturday, October 18, 2014 for a concert featuring The Retro Ramblers, a quartet of men who sing songs from the ‘old days’ but with a taste for the contemporary. The Retro Ramblers have been playing sold out venues throughout the city and are now embarking on a series of concerts in Toronto churches. The concert starts at 3 pm with a reception to follow.

Announcing Mimico’s Newest Addition Ice harvesting is an occupation now obsolete due to the development of technology, but was a necessary commodity in the days before air conditioning and refrigeration. The manageable width of the Humber River made it a relatively easy source for extraction. The newest mural in Mimico “Morning Ice Harvest on the Humber River” honours the men and the businesses who made this craft their profession.

Skate on Eight The second annual Skate on Eight took place on Saturday, August 8th at the Eighth Street Skate Park. This bright sunny day provided the perfect conditions for participants. The event had skaters in two age categories; 16 and under and 17 and older. The competition gave skateboarders the opportunity to perform their best tricks on different obstacles. Eighth Street Skatepark features handrails, quarter pipe, ledges, stairs, and a bowl resembling an empty swimming pool.

The artist team comprised of professional mural artist, Jim Bravo and youth apprentice, Emma Ciobanica (www.artexploration.wordpress.com) collaborated to create a design that captures the work of this long, gone profession and complement the existing mural that depicts a nostalgic view of swimmers about to bath in the Mimico Creek circa 1920s.

Since 2012, Lakeshore Arts (www.lakeshorearts.ca), a west end community arts organization, has played a key role in creating murals in the Mimico community that focus on a unique community asset – the water. Located in the southwest end of Toronto, Mimico, evokes a small town feeling within the big city. It is a neighbourhood of parks, small family run businesses and access to the lake.

The mural is located on the east side of Kaboodles Restaurant at 2491 Lake Shore Blvd West. This public art piece was made possible by the generous support of the City of Toronto’s Economic Development Mural Program and the Mimico-by-the-Lake Business Improvement Association.

The long term goal of this project is to create a third mural in 2016 forming a triptych that captures a historic view of the Mimico area based on its proximity to the lake and the relationship the community has had with it.

Grand Re-opening Rotary Peace Park Playground was officially reopened on July 30th. A ribbon cutting ceremony with City Councillor Mark Grimes and the Friends of Rotary Peace Park officially reopened the new playground which includes new junior and senior play structures, new landscaping, lighting, pathway and drainage improvements, and new benches.

Delivering Results for Canadians

By Bernard Trottier, MP Etobicoke-Lakeshore During the productive spring sitting of the House of Commons, our Conservative Government delivered important legislation to address the issues that are important to families in Etobicoke.

We know that the economy continues to be the top priority of Canadians, which is why it’s our Government’s top priority. This spring, our efforts to strengthen the economy and help create jobs were bolstered by passing key aspects of our Economic Action Plan. These measures include connecting Canadians with available jobs as well as delivering better training for the workforce of tomorrow.

At the same time, our Government believes that families have a right to feel safe in their homes and on their streets. That’s why we continue to take steps to help improve the safety of our communities. This spring, we were able to pass a number of bills that support victims of crime and put the safety of Canadian families first. For example, in response to concerns from victims and their families, we passed the Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act. This bill will help ensure that the safety of communities and victims are paramount in the decision-making process for those found NCR. It implements some commonsense reforms, such as creating a “high-risk” designation which would block the release of those who may pose a danger to the public, without jeopardizing their ability to receive treatment. It will also enhance victim involvement in the process and give them a more effective voice.

We were able to introduce the landmark Canadian Victims Bill of Rights. The Victims Bill of Rights will permanently entrench the rights of victims into a single document at the federal level—a first in Canadian history. It will guarantee that the justice system recognizes a victims’ rights in four key areas: information, protection, participation and restitution.

Canadians can also be proud that our Government delivered two important pieces of legislation—the Fair Elections Act and the Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act— that will help safeguard our democracy and protect the value of Canadian citizenship.

Our Government will continue to work hard this summer and stay focused on what matters most to Canadians. The Opposition either have no economic plan or promote policies that would us back economically. Thomas Mulcair and the NDP continue to push risky economic schemes that would raise the cost of living for families and push us deep into deficit. Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau has stayed silent on job creation and how to support Canada’s economy. Instead, he’s made the legalization of marijuana the centrepiece of his platform. This lack of good judgement shows he’s out of touch with the priorities of hard-working families.

Canadians can count on our Government to keep Canada’s finances sound so that we can create jobs, balance the budget in 2015, deliver more tax relief for families and keep Canada strong and prosperous.
