HANNA TOWN COUNCIL
Train coming to Hanna Beth Causley
ECA Review Reporter
Kode Peacock and Logan Golby, both of Coronation, enjoyed the warmer weather on May 18 as they splash each other in the Coronation pool which opened on May 17. ECA Review/B.Causley
Hanna Town Council agreed to subsidize the rental of the Camrose Chamber of Commerce Train on August 7, 2015 in conjunction with the Fall Fair and CN Reunion to a maximum of $750 at their regular meeting on May 12. Sheila Taylor, president of the Hanna and District Historical Society presented the proposal to rent the train and bring it to Hanna along with the Cactus Corridor Economic Development Corporation and the Hanna Roundhouse Society. The train will be used to transport people between sites at the different events. Council decided to give the full amount of the train rental to the groups and not have a charge for the ride as they did not want anyone to miss out on the opportunity to ride the train if they couldn’t afford the $3 fare that was being proposed.
Taxes stay the same
The tax rate bylaw was given three readings and passed at the meeting. The town will not be increasing taxes.
Hanna Wake students chosen
Danny Davies and Katie Davies, the two students who were chosen for the annual student exchange between Hanna and Wake, Japan were the only two who applied. Both students are from the same family and will have to pay 50 per cent of the costs and will be in Japan for three weeks. The other 50 per cent of the costs will be covered by the Town. Preliminary preparations are underway and the town will be recruiting home stay families for the end of July to host our Japan students. Hanna’s students will return to Japan for the month of August. Over 35 packages were picked up by various students who were interested in the exchange program.
Coronation Hospital - Celebrating one hundred years Beth Causley
ECA Review Reporter Coronation celebrated 100 years of having a hospital in the town on May 14. Speeches were given by the Mayor and selected residents and then an afternoon tea was enjoyed. The ‘Back in Time’ history book, which is compiled from the files of the Coronation ECA Review used to be known as, has a whole chapter dedicated to the history of the hospital, beginning when the first bylaw was passed in 1914 ‘authorizing the issues of debentures for hospital purposes’. Also in that year Mayor Northwood and Dr. Hurlburt were successful in securing the property for the hospital. The two men
managed to negotiate the C.P.R. Company officials in Calgary from the original price of $1500 to $500, saving taxpayers in Coronation $1000. Miss Allison of Calgary, the matron of the new hospital, along with the new care takers, Mr. and Mrs. Foy of Calgary, both arrived in Coronation. The Coronation Review on Jan. 7, 1915 reported that the Coronation Public Hospital was now open and treating patients. It was a frame, three story high building with a basement and an attic. It cost about $12,000 and had accommodation for 16 patients, while “20 could be accommodated in a pinch”, according to one of the entries from 1917.
The hospital had two public wards, one semi private and five private wards and was equipped with an operating room. The hospital staff at the time consisted of the matron, two nurses, a cook and a caretaker. Dr. J.S. Brookman and Dr. E.L. Little were attending physicians. Prior to this hospital, Coronation had two private hospitals, one operated by Mrs. Clark and the other by Mrs. McKenzie, according to the ‘Heart of Caring” book published at the time of the 75 year history of hospitals in Coronation. It noted references to operations begin performed at the McKenzie Hospital and in 1913 Mrs. McKenzie took over the Alberta Hotel and had it remodelled and refurbished into

an ‘up-to-date hospital with a registered nursed in attendance. As far as doctors during this time period, it was noted that in early 1912, Dr. Hurlburt was appointed Medical Offcer for the Coronation area with no salary; he was paid by case. The more patients he visited the greater his salary. In June of 1912 he was put on a salary of $15 monthly. In May of 1929 the Coronation hospital board erected a building for the nurses’ sleeping quarters.
