Alberta region. “It’s all within a 75-mile radius, but some of the kids are 75 miles southeast (of Veteran), and then the (Damon) Zimmer boy is from Daysland, so they’re 150 miles apart from each other,” said Bulls coach Graham Schetzsle of Veteran. “It’s kind of mind-boggling.” Not to mention travel for games. The Bulls opened the season with three games in Lacombe two weekends ago, and headed to St. Albert last weekend for AAA tournament action. This weekend, they’re off to Sherwood Park for another AAA tourney. “It’s a challenge, no matter what community you’re in,” Schetzsle said of trying to find enough competitive players to field teams in rural communities. “Stettler is a pretty big community, but for Castor, Coronation, Veteran, Consort, Oyen and (others), it’s just impossible in this day and age to have one competitive team in each place.” Community collaboration and the commitment of coaches, players, parents and sponsors have enabled the Bulls to step up to the plate against some of the best players in the province. “The luxury of it is it allows kids in our area to play a little bit better baseball,” said Schetzsle, whose coaching staff includes Barry Logan of Oyen, Trevor Fawcett of Consort and Brad Zimmer of Daysland. “We aren’t in the AAA league, because of extra travel demands, but we have been competing closely with the AAA teams for the last couple of years. Some of our kids are an hour away (from Veteran), but at least it’s (worthy ball

It’s the only competitive baseball team in this age group in the east-central region.” The Stettler Sliders operated last season at the bantam AA level, but they aren’t back this season because most of those players have graduated from bantam. Two former Sliders — Taylor Frank of Castor and Paul Georget of Stettler — are now with the Bulls. Coronation, Brownfield, Veteran, Consort, Hardisty, Amisk and Czar are among the other communities represented in East Central’s 14-man lineup, including affiliate Jarek Sopracolle of Coronation. “This particular age group, we’ve had to reach out far and wide to get the numbers,” said Schetzsle, whose son Hayden is among the nine first-year bantams with the Bulls. “I’ve coached the core of this team since 2008. We’ve lost and gained a few pieces along the way, but there’s five originals from 2008, so those kids were eight years old at that time.” Last season, those Bulls won the provincial peewee AA Tier 1 championship. “We won Tier 1 provincials last year as a peewee team, and I have no reason to believe we won’t at least qualify for Tier 1 (bantam) provincials this year,” coach Schetzsle said. “I don’t know whether we’ll win or not, but who knows.” The Bulls hope to host a round of provincial qualifying at Veteran in early June. On the season-opening weekend, East Central posted three wins in as many games — 7-6 over Camrose Cougars Royal, 15-0 over Lacombe Dodgers Blue and 12-2 over the Heisler Junior Cardinals. East-central cadets gain slice of dough John MacNeil
Review Reporter The new Coronation-based cadet squadron marched door-to-door last week in the final phase of a pizza fundraiser. The cadets delivered pizza and other food products to east-central Alberta homes last Wednesday night to gain a slice of the profits. “We earned over $7,000 for selling the pizzas,” said Annette Allen, the squadron sponsoring committee chair of the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron No. 572. “Our cut of it was about $1,600. So it really helps out.” After a four-month hiatus, the former Castor squadron resumed operations at the end of March in the group’s new base, Coronation. Along with the recruitment of more civilian instructors, the revamped squadron has stepped up fundraising efforts. “We’ve had some really great supporters,” Allen said. “The Elks came through. They donated the rental of the hall (in Coronation) this year. “Next year, since we’re getting too big now for the hall that we’re (training) in, we’ve cleared it with Cam Brown, the principal of Coronation School, that we can use the gymnasium on Mondays, starting in September. So that’s great — that’s a big area to work with.” The cadets and their leaders turned to pizza to make dough in support of their activities. “Coco Brooks (Pizza of Calgary) offered so much more this year,” Allen said. “They had Buffalo burgers and meat packs and everything this year, so it was a big seller.” The east-central squadron made a major move this winter, not so much geographically, but organizationally, as it relocated to Coronation from just down Highway 12 in Castor. In the process, the to-be-named 572 squadron added adult officers, a shortage of whom had threatened the future of the local organization and caused its wintertime suspension of operations. “We got a whole new whack of civilian
instructors, which is what we needed,” Allen said Friday. “A lot of women have stepped up and are willing to help out. “We need a couple of more male instructors. We have one male civilian instructor right now, and then the commanding officer, of course. But we have five civilian instructors that are women. We could really use another male influence in there.” The instructors teach the classes, but previous experience in a cadet squadron isn’t a prerequisite, Allen said. “You can learn right along with the cadets. I’ve taught classes … Actually, it’s quite educational.” Before they regrouped March 24, the cadets hadn’t marched together since Remembrance Day ceremonies last Nov. 11. Seemingly, they haven’t missed a beat on the membership front. The membership remains stable and shows signs of growth, Allen reported. “I believe we’re standing at 14 (members), including 11 from the Castor squadron. We’ve got three new members, but we have more coming. They’re just not 12 years old yet. They want to sign up next year. “They can be from anywhere in this area. They’re mostly from Coronation, but we also have cadets that come from Byemoor, Hanna, Brownfield and Castor, and hopefully next year we’ll have some from Veteran and Consort.” The 572 squadron has lost its Stettler content, but cadets from that area have the option to join squadrons closer to their home, such as those in Ponoka, Red Deer and Penhold, Allen said. “It has to usually stay within your 100-kilometre range. So they could go to Ponoka or they could come to us. It’s their choice.” The Coronation squadron, still mulling a potential moniker to match its 572 trademark, has confirmed that Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 119 of Castor agreed to remain the sponsor of the local cadet group. The cadets plan to gather in Coronation on Saturday (May 24) to practise air-rifle shooting and to make up classes. On June 1, the air cadets are scheduled to take flight at the Netook Gliding Centre outside Olds.
The squadron’s annual cadet review is slated for June 7 at the Coronation community hall.
The event runs from 3 to 4 p.m., and the cutoff time for public seating is 2:45.

Bulls ramp up training with AAA tournaments Cont’d from Pg 1 With spring seemingly stranded on first base, it’s been difficult for all teams to gain an accurate read on their prospects for this baseball season. “I think we’ll be OK,” Schetzsle said as the Bulls practised May 14 on a rare sunny night. “It’s hard to tell, because it’s been so bloody cold, for one reason. We’ve been practising out here in very cold weather. We started on April 20, so we’ve been at it just about a month. There’s been a lot of cold weather. This would be about our seventh practice. It seems every one has been plus-2 with a wind.” The Bulls ramped up their training by entering Edmonton-area AAA tournaments on back-to-back weekends. “This weekend will be a stiffer test,” Schetzsle said. “It’s just for development. It doesn’t do anyone any good to win (convincingly). If you’re winning 15-0, it’s not even a good practice this early in the season. And we’ve always attended one AAA event, as a rule, per year. There’s some very talented kids in the province — and they put time and work into it — and it allows us to see what level we need to get to, or that we can get to. You only get better by playing better people — plain and simple.” Schetzsle speaks from experience on the Veteran field
where he’s watched generations of baseball. “I kind of grew up on this ball diamond,” he said. “My dad and a few other guys had a senior team here for a lot of years — the Veteran Angels. “When I came home from college, we had a senior team for three or four years … until I quit playing (and began coaching) when my son was old enough to play.” Son Hayden has just turned 14 years old. For baseball families, spring and summer weekends on the road are a way of life. The Bulls hope they’re on
course for the provincial championship tournament in late July. “We’ll only get a couple of weekends off from now until the end of July, so it’s pretty intense travel and schedule,” coach Schetzsle said. “And that’s part of the reason why there isn’t a lot of (competitive) teams like this, because not everybody wants to put in this time commitment.” The Bulls are banking on pitching contributions from multiple sources, with “eight or nine kids that can throw strikes and get people out.” As for starters, Schetzsle listed newcomers Frank and Georget and
incumbents Brendan and Gavin Logan of Oyen and Carver Zimmer of Coronation. ECA Review Journalist There’s more to Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) than has been discussed in most media reports. Sure, there’s the all-toofamiliar “entitled” Canadians that have such poor work habits that employers prefer spending the extra $5,000 to get a temporary foreign worker. And then we have those heart-wrenching stories of select employers treating temporary foreign workers more as slaves and hostages than employees. Or we have stories of long-term employees being dumped in favour of cheaper foreign workers. But most agree, especially resource-based provinces such as Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland, that there is a shortage of workers prepared to work in low-paying service industry jobs. It’s a problem, but our provincial and federal government policies have created the worker shortages. The root problem, that everyone avoids talking about, is the current economic growth model, which is to extract natural resources at break-neck speed. The current Canadian population and its immigrants are just unable to keep up with job growth even though Canada has the highest immigration rate per capita in the world. There is a belief that temporary workers are the magic bullet. Use them and lose them. It saves taxpayers from dealing with their, or their family’s education, health, old age pensions, and the like. But alas, it’s never that simplistic. No temporary foreign worker program has ever been successful in any country when it has been overused. France, the Netherlands or the United States with its illegal immigrant “unofficial” program, are classic examples of TFWPs gone bad. Over-usage of temporary workers always means greed and convenience have surpassed need and human rights. If we don’t want all the inherent problems that come with a massive TFW program, there are options. Slow down resource development is primary. That would go a long way to solving many problems. Other solutions would be to offer affordable child care similar to Quebec so that foreign nannies aren’t necessary. Or even better, let oldfashion supply and demand market-economics work. If a service industry has labour shortages, higher wages will attract new job seekers to the industry. If you bring foreign workers over your intention may be to use them, then lose them, but their intention is to get a foot in the door and eventually move themselves and their families to Canada for a better life. I’m only a second-generation Canadian and I know that is exactly why my four grandparents came to Canada.

ZAP! Theatre supports international cause Lisa Joy
Review Reporter A group of homeschool students from across Central Alberta — wanting to continue acting beyond high school and fundraise for an orphanage in Tanzania — helped create ZAP! Theatre group. Now, ZAP! Theatre, which started in May 2012, returns this year with its biggest production yet, The 3½ Musketeers. Most of its performers are from Lacombe, Ponoka area and Red Deer. The cast has 18 members ranging in age from 16 to 24. “Unwilling to simply accept what they were told was ‘reality’ and ‘growing up,’ these actors banded together to keep on acting, despite the hectic schedules created by work and university,” said Paige Mansell, assistant manager
of ZAP! Theatre. “The actors all wound up together because of Debbie and Dean Zepick (of Lacombe), who have used the performing arts to bring the homeschool students of Alberta together through winter drama productions, choirs and intensive summer camps,” she added. The family-friendly musical in two acts is a spoof, with apologies to Alexandre Dumas’ classic story. The performances, produced by special arrangement with Baker’s Plays, are at Asker Luther Church east of Ponoka. The 17th century ball gowns couldn’t be found in thrift stores, so the cast and families took on the challenge of making most of the costumes from scratch, under the direction of costume coordinator Lyndall Cave, said Mansell. They
rented one costume from the costume department at Red Deer College. Laurel Mansell painted the set. Music is by Jack Sharkey and the play is directed by Debbie and Dean Zepick. The theatre group helps street boys of Mwanza at the Christian Life Orphanage, which is supported by the Central Alberta Homeschool Choir. The actors, directors, managers and stagehands are all volunteers and pay for the production, period costumes and props out of their own pockets. At their productions, they have free-will offerings to help offset these costs. In addition, the group has launched a flexible funding video on Youtube at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ zap-theatre-presents-the-threeand-a-half-musketeers with a goal
of raising $2,500 from May 5 to June 4. As of Tuesday they were able to raise $1,260. The troupe just wrapped up its May performances and will

When someone does something tragic to others, for example the recent killing of five promising young people in Calgary by a detective’s son for no apparent reason, we ask, “How can that be?” “We know so much about technology, and although there is much study on the brain, we don’t really have any idea what’s happening in other people’s minds,” said Charalee Graydon. Graydon was in Red Deer over the long weekend promoting her recently published book, “The Judgement Game.” The Judgement Game” is a series of case studies which allows you to take part in the criminal and civil justice systems of the fictional country of Torcia. The country faces many of our present-day problems — domestic abuse, addictive behaviours, home invasion, impaired driving offences, sex and greed. The Judgement Game is about returning justice to the people and is interactive requiring you to make the decisions on the type of punishment Torcia will use. ‘Endangered’ means nothing on a lucrative scale
Cont’d from Pg 4 To belittle the positive impact on the economy from the oilsands would be a comment bred in ignorance: many have succeeded in acquiring jobs in Alberta through this means. It brings a transient, fluid economy all across the province and it provides much revenue for Canada more broadly. Many would not have jobs without the “patch,” and it has put Alberta on the map — for better or for worse — on a global scale.
The risk
The extremes between catering to big oil and maintaining a natural balance are always being negotiated in this province. More recently, the oil interests muscled out a quieter, less hostile enemy with the aid of the Alberta government: the habitat of endangered mountain caribou. The government proceeded with auctioning off of 1,700 hectares, or seven plots, of land north of Grande Cache for oil development. The area to be auctioned off includes territory for the 100-animal RedrockPrairie Creek and 78-animal Narraway herds, which have both been severely affected in numbers due to environmental disturbance caused by development more broadly. If the numbers of these herds seem low, that can be directly attributed to their endangered status: the highest, most devastating designation a species can acquire, denoting that without proper monitoring and safety measures the species is at peak risk for extinction. For impact: these creatures, at this very moment, are at a high risk from complete and total annihilation from the planet. The government, declining to acknowledge this endangered classification nor hold a moratorium to discuss the sale, is persisting with the argument that property is being sold within strict development guidelines — guidelines that many within the environmental and conservation sector say aren’t sufficient to
actually keep the risk of extinction at bay. Despite the fact that more measures, including longer-distance drilling and a more aggressive stance on reforestation, have been suggested to be added to the drilling provisions to ensure the animals can maintain a healthy lifestyle in their territory, the government has firmly locked it’s horns on selling the land under its rules.
My opinion
To privilege the acquisition of monetary gains over the maintenance and restoration of living creatures is an uncalculated risk; disrupting the province’s natural biosphere and potentially eliminating the ability to maintain Alberta’s most beautiful and holistic natural resource: its nature. Relinquishing the homeland of multiple endangered species to money-making machines, when the oil industry is presently thriving within Alberta and elsewhere, is greed manifest. Natural resources such as animal species and living lands aren’t as lucrative financially as oil — but they contribute to the health of the Earth and the variety and attraction of Alberta. Think of the tourism ads promoting the province on television: one doesn’t see sweeping, slowmotion images of the oilseeds, but brilliant video of the mountains, the pastures: Alberta’s nature. This natural landscape used to promote the province to outsiders is the same one that clears the skies so we have breathable air, nourishes the ground so we have cultivatable land and maintains the cycles through which our lives are governed. We have already begun to see the ill-effects of natural destruction on a global scale, such as a study that determined a link between pollution in Asia and erratic weather patterns in the U.S. When it comes to nature, nothing is done in isolation and certainly nothing is benign and harmless. To rush with haste into a potentially

planet-altering decision demonstrates a cold, militaristic style of governance: one which has an agenda, one which ignores non-governmental opinion, one which does as it pleases without any democratic discourse. Given the atrocious state of seniors care, health care, emergency planning and social services in the province, one wonders where this money will end up anyhow. When we put a dollar sign on nature, we potentially risk causing irreversible damage — in a very short timespan — to something that has been here for millions of years. Yet the word ‘endangered’ means nothing on a lucrative scale, as endangered species do not generate revenue. When the government becomes a slave to money, obsessed with revenue despite mounting debt, it will not act in accordance to a more balanced understanding of what it means to govern. To govern means to be a steward to all aspects of a province: its natural resources, its economy, its people and its longevity. As the government continues to

These choices do not have to include abortion, but I am quite sure that what he is referring to is abortion and not adoption or some other choice that would preserve the life of the fetus. You can sugar coat this issue with all the soft weasel words you like but it does not change the fact that when the life of a fetus is deliberately terminated, it is murder! When a woman chooses to abort a fetus, she chooses to end the life of what would have been a human like herself. It demonstrates a total lack of respect for human life. In far too many situations, abortion is used as a form of birth control. What makes abortion even more odious is that it is paid for with the tax dollars of the people that are strongly opposed to the termination of life for the most vulnerable. If women want choice, they could choose to make sure they do not participate in unprotected sex. Trudeau has demonstrated on more than one occasion that he does not believe in democracy. He once stated in an interview that his idea of a model government is China.
He believes that his Liberal candidates must represent his views on pro-choice, not the views of their constituents. So if the majority of an MP’s constituents believe in pro-life, Trudeau would demand that the MP vote pro-choice. In demanding that his candidates be pro-choice instead of being pro-life, Justin Trudeau is asking his candidates and our society to support irresponsible intimate personal behaviour. I think the real problem with this issue is political correctness. We need to call a spade a spade. In my opinion, abortion is murder pure and simple. If it was referred to that way and people understood it that way, I am sure there would be far less of it. Stettler county backs skate park Lisa Joy
Review Reporter County of Stettler council, at its May 14 meeting, approved $30,000 in cash or inkind work for the Stettler Skate Park. The skate park committee has received more than $150,000 from the Town of Stettler, $75,000 from province in a Community Facility Enhancement Fund grant and have raised more than $58,000 themselves. The land for the park is provided by the town and will remain under town ownership. The first phase, a heart-shaped portion, will be developed first. Mike Lawlor, representing the skate park committee, told county council that the community response has been good and they expect more donations. “We’re just trucking along,” he said. Exactly what day they will break ground hasn’t been nailed down, said Lawlor, but he added it will be determined when they get closer to their fundraising goal. Coun. Les Stulberg voted against the county funding $30,000. County council approved $88,881 for a survey to correct the Old Bolin Subdivision encroachments. The Summer Village of Rochon Sands, in its Buffalo Lake South Shore Intermunicipal Development Plan (BLSSIDP) allows them to work jointly with the County of Stettler to survey the encroachment and give affected landowners a chance to buy the reserve land from the county. The first phase of the project costs about $34,279, which the county budgeted $28,902. The Summer Village of Rochon Sands’ portion is $5,377, but the county will pay it and recover the funds from the summer village later this year. In a split 4-3 vote, county council voted in favour of re-supplying calcium for up to 10 residents along 19-3, two miles south of 39-2 and two residences east of 39-2. The road was initially surfaced with calcium in 2011, but the application only lasted about two to three weeks because of heavy volume of traffic. “It’s a main thoroughfare,” Larry Mulgrove told county council at its May 14
regular meeting. “After the three weeks, the calcium is a dirty dust.” Township Road 39-2 is the only through road from Stettler to Halkirk and connects many landowners from east and northeast of Stettler. In addition, an eightlot subdivision application was registered in 2012 in the area. Stettler Auction Mart also generates a large amount of heavy truck and trailer traffic. Oilfield companies and large farm machinery also use three miles of 39-2 road. New commercial businesses in the area have also translated into increased traffic. Councillors James Nibourg, Les Stulberg and Dave Grover voted against the motion. County council unanimously agreed to administration’s recommendation that the county consider the upgrading of roads as a condition for a development permit or subdivision approval. For residential development the county will base its decision whether upgrades are needed on the impact the application will have on road function. If upgrades are needed, the county will add the upgrades to the road construction program as its budget allows. A report prepared by John van der Bank, director of planning and development, stated this approach was needed because many county roads don’t meet current new construction road standards. Councillor Les Stulberg said the changes will make the county more user-friendly. The Donalda and District Ag Society will see about $6,000 in funding after County of Stettler council agreed to help fund a hot water tank and furnace for the Donalda Community Hall. Last fall, their furnace and hot water heater quit and had to be replaced right away because the hall couldn’t operate without them. They had unsuccessfully applied for grant money from the Recreational Special Project Funding. The Donalda and District Ag Society provided an updated financial statement that revealed its limited surplus to cover the unexpected expense. The $6,000 will come out of the county’s Operating Recreation Reserve, leaving a balance of about $47,000.

‘Definitely something I’ll remember’ Cont’d from Pg 7 Most revealing was “just the landscape of the Prairies,” said Bays, who plays competitive hockey. “But it’s been a nice, interesting change.” Bays, a saxophonist, was matched with Connor Sheppard, a Grade 9 student from Consort who plays bass guitar. While they might come from varied backgrounds, it seems common themes emerge among teenagers. “You know the (same) video games,” Bays said with a smile. “Listen to music, play music.” Sheppard, 15, said the Albertans made the most of their week in Ottawa and beyond. “It was fun,” he said of a tour that included visits to Parliament Hill and Montreal, rockclimbing and a taste of Poutine. “Lots of great experiences. Met a lot of awesome people. It was definitely something I’ll remember. “I mostly just like meeting all the people there. It was cool to see. Things aren’t that much different there, but they’re still different. One thing that I just remember, because it was funny, is that their milk comes in bags. “The Parliament buildings were really cool. It was awesome to see where it’s all done (politically). Lot more people than here in Consort. I got used to it. I liked
the bigger city over the small town.” Wherever he settles as an adult, Sheppard hopes music remains an influence. “I’m definitely going to play music my entire life,” he said. “I like playing music and listening to it. “After I graduate,
I’m planning on going to university and becoming an architect.” Sheppard described his billet mate — Bays — with words that finished atop the chart during the music exchange. “He was just really fun and cool and awesome.”

The County of Paintearth No. 18 mailed the property tax notices for 2014. The deadline for payment of 2014 property taxes is June 30, 2014. Balances still owing after June 30, 2014 will be subject to a penalty of 5% and a further 10% penalty on all outstanding balances after September 30, 2014. Payment can be made by cheque, cash, or debit at the County Administration Office located at #1 Crowfoot Crossing, Highway 12 and Twp Road 374; at the TD Canada Trust in Coronation, or the ATB Financial branches located in Halkirk, Castor, or Coronation.
