The 2015 Budget Bylaw 638-15 that was passed with a 5 - 2 vote at the May 5 special meeting held by the County of Paintearth will see the tax rate increased by 10 per cent. A copy of the 2015 final budget provided to the ECA Review had council salaries listed at $165,000 for wages and $30,000 benefits but that number

was not broken down into the amount received by each councillor. Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Tarolyn Peach clarified that the $165,000 is an estimate based on previous years actual expenditures for the seven elected officials. Peach confirmed that councillors receive a monthly allowance of $400, deputy reeve is $600 and the reeve is $800, as per policy. Peach, in an email, reported that along with that

monthly allowance councillors also receive a per diem meeting rate of $200 per day and $100 per half day for each meeting they attend. Councillors have not had an increase to the per diem rates since 2009, she said. Doing the math, if council had 24 council meetings a year including the per diem, the reeve would make $24,000; deputy reeve $19,200; and the five remaining councillors pay

gravel in 2015. The gravel may only be expensed when the gravel is applied on the road. The 1.4 million is gravel acquired for future use that cannot be taxed until it is applied to the right of way. This increases the County’s assets but decreases their cash flow.

ECA Review Reporter When Councillor Rocky Dahmer questioned the gravel program budget, at the May 5 meeting County of Paintearth meeting, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Tarolyn Peach advised that the cost for the program is 3.2 million a year and only 1.8 million of that is taxable. It is budgeted for the County to use 70, 000 yards of

A letter received from Deputy Minister Brad Pickering informed council that Municipal

Sustainability Initiative (MSI) funding requests made by the County have been approved, council heard at their regular meeting on May 20. The letter explained that the municipality may apply the amounts of MSI funding capital to the qualifying costs of the projects requested. The MSI requests that were approved for the County are; grader purchases for $470,000, bridge upgrades for $367,534 and

No municipal tax increase for Coronation residents Beth Causley

ECA Review Reporter Coronation residents will not have their municipal taxes increased but they still might see a rise in their tax bill due to increased assessments, council heard at their regular meeting on May 25. Coronation council amended the proposed Operating and Capital budget for 2015 at their special May 20 meeting by deleting the purchase of a 3-ton truck that will save the town $30,000 to $45,000. They also increased the capital budget for rehabilitation of the campground road from $20,000 to $26,000 and changed the MSI Operating allocations. The budget was approved at the May 20 meeting which allowed Chief Administration Officer (CAO) Sandra Kulyk to present the tax rate bylaw at the May 25 meeting. The town had estimated municipal expenditures and transfers in the budget at $3,627,527.47 and estimated municipal revenues and transfers from all sources other than taxation estimated at $2,145,168.82 and the balance of $1,488,562 to be raised by general municipal tax.

ECA Review Reporter Stettler Mayor Dick Richards described the 2015 Operating Budget as “a fairly substantial budget” but also “a very responsible budget” that council passed at the May 19 council meeting. Richards stated that the $17,221,863 budget is definitely more of a need to do and not a want to do budget in reference to projects planned for the year. Stettlerites will see a three per cent municipal tax increase for both residential and non-residential properties following council’s approval of Tax Bylaw 2064-15. The interim budget had previously predicted an increase. Assessments are also up slightly in 2015. Residential properties on average went up 2.09 per cent while non-residential properties increased 1.47 per cent.

New play space

A new playground is set for construction at West Stettler Park. Kinette Club representative Allison Baird presented council with an update on the progress of the park. To date, the Kinettes have raised $186,000 towards the $215,000 cost of the playground construction. The Kinettes are hoping the remaining funds will come from a Community Facility Enhancement Program grant. The town has agreed to contribute labour and machinery to excavate the 3,160 square foot space for the playground site.

Skatepark gets lit up

The Stettler Skatepark will be open for business longer in the evenings once lighting is installed at the park. Stettler Skatepark Association will pay for the cost of two solar lights at $3,090 each and the town will install them. The lights will remain on a trial basis with the town having the option to remove them at the town’s discretion. In that case, the town will buy out the lights and move them to another suitable location.

Tender awarded

J. Branco and Sons was awarded the tender to replace sidewalks and concrete on the west side of 54 Street from 48 to 50 Avenue. The tender of $233,084.70 was the lesser of two submitted. The capital budget had approved up to $255,000 for the projects.

Hanna firefighters receive medals By Kim Neill, Chief Administration Officer, Town of Hanna The Town of Hanna is pleased to congratulate 12 of Hanna’s Volunteer Firefighters who were recipients of the Alberta Emergency Services Medal and Certificate on May 22, 2015. The Alberta Emergency Services Medal and Certificate is awarded to recognize the contribution to our community of the Hanna Volunteer Fire Fighters, specifically members who have reached a milestone with the Department. These members are receiving the Alberta Emergency Services medal for giving 12 or more years of service. To be eligible, personnel must have been serving on or after January 1, 2000 in a sector of the Alberta emergency management system. Recipients of the awards were: Deputy Fire Chief Brent Olesen, Fire Fighter Rhys Bevan, Lieutenant Kevin Burgemeister, Fire Fighter Adrian Mohl, Lieutenant Glen Durand, Fire Fighter Lindsay Gall, Lieutenant Tina Mohl, Fire Fighter Jill Olesen, Lieutenant Rob Palmer, Fire Fighter Candice Gordon, Fire Fighter Murray Orr and Fire Fighter Kelly Peterson. “Each one of these fire fighters have exemplified the qualities of good service, loyalty and conduct. They have dedicated untold hours to the Fire Service in Hanna and area; giving up their weekends to take training, evenings for practices or equipment checks and responding to the fire pager whenever needed.” Said Mayor Warwick, during his congratulatory speech. “The Town of Hanna is proud of their

Big Valley mayor steps down Debra Johnston

ECA Review Reporter According to CAO Michelle White, Big Valley Mayor Gail Knudson has stepped down as mayor and councillor. At this time, it is unclear whether the resignation was effective immediately or if Knudson will formally resign at the May 28 council meeting. Both Knudson and White were contacted by phone for further clarification and comment but did not respond prior to press time. In a prior conversation with White, when asked whether Knudson’s decision had anything to do with the recent arguments over replica guns, White responded that she thought it was more that Knudson just had enough after seven years of public service. The resignation triggers a by-election which, according to White, will likely not be an acclamation as there are a number of interested parties.

accomplishments and pleased to know that the province of Alberta recognizes their years of loyal service to the people of Alberta.” The evening began with a meal followed by congratulatory speeches and medal presentations. “Whether they serve as

Deputy Chief, Lieutenant, or Fire Fighter and whether they have served for 12 years or 25 years, their conduct when representing the Town of Hanna Fire Department has always been of the highest standard,” said Hanna Fire Chief, David Mohl.

OBITUARIES

Dedicated member of Oil Wives and Legion Lucille Shirley Hansen was born September 24, 1932 in Berwyn, Ab. She was the third child of four born to Chester and Edna Ricker (nee Showman). Lucille passed away peacefully on May 11, 2015 at the Coronation Hospital & Health Care Centre at the age of 82 years. On October 20, 1950 Lucille married Donald Alderdice of Hardisty, Ab. at the age of 18. They had two sons, Lorne, born March 13, 1953 and Hansen Brian, born June 2, 1958. Lucille was always a very hard worker; she helped with many of the farm chores. She also worked

for neighbouring farmers cooking meals and baking pies for their hired hands. Lucille, Donald and the boys did move to Penticton, B.C where Donald worked for Lucille’s brother for approximately one and a half years. Lucille and Donald then moved back into Hardisty where Lucille worked in the hospital cooking in the kitchen and at other jobs as well. Lucille later relocated to the Coronation area where she met and eventually married Soren Hansen on September 24, 1976. They had a very successful tank truck business (Hansen’s Trucking) hauling crude oil contracted under Gibson’s Petroleum

in Hardisty. Lucille dispatched for a while out of their home but eventually went to work in various places in Coronation. She worked for Coronation Farm Equipment, Co-op, Dobson’s Jewellery, Pearl’s and Parker’s Variety Store. Lucille was a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion for many years in Coronation. When the Legion disbanded in town years ago, she later joined the Stettler Legion. Lucille was also a very active member for many years for the Association of Oil Wives Clubs - Coronation. Lucille was diagnosed with Dementia last summer which forced her to move to Assisted Living September 3, 2014. She made new friends and reunited

Museum became her passion Wilda Vesta Gibbon joined her beloved Earl on May 14, 2015, age 89, at the Stettler Hospital surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Wilda was born August 18, 1925, the third of the five children of William and Vesta Schreiber who farmed south of Stettler. Wilda was inspired to be a Gibbon teacher, entering Normal School at 16 years of age with her first teaching assignment in northern Alberta. She later taught at Union Hall, Nevis and Erskine schools and many learned “See Dick run, see Jane run” from Wilda. It was with determined resolve and sacrifice that she attended summer school and night school and was awarded her B.Ed in 1975. On September 15, 1944, she married RCAF airman Earl Gibbon and they purchased a farm south of Nevis. To this union was born the twins, Bob and Bill (1947) and Brenda (1961). Wilda opened her home as a sanctuary for many children and provided love, guidance and tutelage to many. Wilda and Earl sold the Nevis farm and moved to Stettler in 1972. After teaching for 36 years Wilda retired in 1980 and together she and Earl went fishing the lakes of Alberta and visiting relatives in Canada and the United States. They spent 15 winters in Yuma, Arizona, making many new friends and enjoying new adventures. The Stettler Museum became her new passion in life. She accepted

the mantle of Curator and Historian and helped expand and organize the museum and was still working on history notes while in hospital. Wilda is predeceased by her husband Earl (2005) and her siblings Gladys (Anderson), Irene (Woodfin) and Charlie Schreiber. She is survived by her sister Jean Brown (Jim), sons Bob of Nevis, Bill in Vancouver, Wa., daughter Brenda Johnson (Ken) of Acme Ab., grandchildren Amber (Zach) of Ashland, Or.,

Sheena (Dave), Vancouver, BC, and Tim Johnson (Natasha), Calgary Ab. and great grandchildren, Esme and Cedar Barnes of Ashland Oregon. In her passing, Wilda leaves to mourn many relatives, nephews, nieces and friends. Funeral services will be held at the Stettler United Church on Monday, June 1, 2015 at 3 pm. Canada needs a plan B. Schimke ECA Review In his latest book, “The Carbon Bubble”, author Jeff Rubin reminds us of former Premier Peter Lougheed’s 2008 warning in a Globe and Mail article, “the United States would soon be coming after our water, and we need to prepare--the reality is that fresh water is more valuable than crude oil.” The next fight won’t be over oil pipelines, it will likely be over water pipelines and the question becomes, are Canadians ready? California today is a state in water crisis. After a 40-year severe drought and another winter where snow packs were dismally lacking, California Gov. Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency and mandated severe water restrictions.

comments were not made in jest, they were absolutely serious from Dalmia’s worldview perspective. So the fight is on, food and fish or green lawns and clean driveways! What does that mean to Canada? The oil industry in Alberta, when under attack for using fresh water for fracking and other oil-related operations, have always argued that they use only a fraction of fresh water in comparison to what agriculture uses. All of which is true, but again what is more important food or oil? Certainly oil provides the higher paid jobs, but the inherent value of food can’t easily be discounted. The U.S. fight for water will spill over into Canada because no one wants to be told to use less water. So the only other alternative is to go get more water and where better to do that than Canada. Looking for family

Dear Editor, I am looking for family in Canada related to Frederik Adolf Schleppegrel Hyltoft . He was born July 25, 1895 in Randers, Denmark and died November 14, 1989 Randers, Denmark. I know he arrived in Canada in March 1926 and was back in Denmark but travelled back to Canada in June 1934 and crossed the border at Buffalo, New York on October 19, 1934. March 1935 he was back in Denmark, where he stayed until his death. I want to know if he was married in Canada, if he was divorced, if he had

children. I am told that he had a daughter. (Names and dates?). I have a photo taken in Canada with Frederik Hyltoft, a young woman and an elderly couple. His address on February 22, 1935 was Coronation, Alberta, Canada. Any information would be received with thanks. Yours sincerely, Mortensen Skovvej 24 DK 9330 Dronninglund, Denmark email: skovvej.drl@gmail.com Phone: DK+98841958

Comments from our web page County taxes three times higher than they should be I too am alarmed of the 10 per cent rise in County taxes. I question the statement that the average increase on agriculture land will be $25 per quarter, I find my increase will be $35.36 per quarter. Taxes in the County of Paintearth are and have been extremely high when compared to Ponoka County. I happen to own farmland in Ponoka County and taxes for 2015 have actually decreased. The taxes on my highest quarter in Paintearth for 2015 will be $490.75. Taxes on my highest assessed quarter in Ponoka County for 2015 are $222.28. A few comparisons should be made at this time: • Market value: Paintearth land

Art exhibit at Coronation Library

Submitted Sweetened Condensed, Tiny Tales of Wit, Wisdom and Wonder is a new art exhibition that is on now at the Coronation Library. The exhibition contains a series of illustrations and illustrated ceramics by Elizabeth Burritt based on a selection of one-line stories, each by a different writer. The stories were solicited from friends and strangers with the promise that those who penned the selections for the final project

would receive prints of the illustrations in return for their efforts. The project created unique collaborations between writers and artists who used blogs to track progress and to allow viewers to witness developments. Elizabeth Burritt is an artist and designer whose practice includes ceramics, illustration, jewelry and graphic design. Her illustration work is linebased and incorporates gouache, collage and digital mark-making

7

while her ceramics are primarily unglazed porcelain pieces that feature decorations rendered in ceramic pigment and permanently high-fired onto the surfaces. Burritt’s is originally from Ontario but now lives in Medicine Hat with her husband and two children. The art exhibition is presented by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program and will be at the Coronation Library until June 17.

Overall wage increase Cont’d from Pg 1 Glazier at $32,960 and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Tarolyn Peach at $168,238. It also listed salaries for each of the councillors, who all receive different amounts due to the number of events and meetings (per diem) that they attend. The two councillors who voted against the bylaw on May 5 for the increase in taxes are the two councillors who earned the least amount of money last year with Blumhagen earning $13,900 and Dahmer $17,180. Peach also clarified a three per cent wage increase over 2014 was budgeted for all staff taking her salary up to $173,285. That works out to, not including Castor, Halkirk or Coronation, the 2011 census listed the population of Paintearth County as 2029 which would mean that each county resident is paying over $85 towards the CAO’s salary, before adding on the price of benefits. She also stated that the designated officer (assessor) is budgeted at $130,000, which is a contracted position with two

private assessment companies. Each respective contract had an increase in 2015; two per cent and 2.3 per cent as approved by council motion. The contracts were tendered, reviewed and approved by Council. In other observations from the budget, it was noted that Public Works salary and benefits for Shop and Administration is $1,056,798. That number doesn’t include grader operators, seasonal workers, light equipment operator and gravel which is budgeted an additional $2,317,402 for salaries and benefits. The wages and benefits for the by-law officer, development officer, Ag field man, Burma Park attendant and a Utilities Officer for the water is only an estimate done by the Review at approximately $467,575. although those items were blacked out in the budget provided to the ECA Review.

Appealing decision takes money

Dear Editor, Well I guess for me, it is over. The two lots in the very center of the village amid residential properties have been rezoned “industrial” against all the conditions listed in the village land use bylaw, and the conditions required by the Alberta Municipal Government Act, that point out why this should NOT have happened.

The issue was badly handled from the beginning and turned into a “political and emotional” issue, rather than the land use issue it was supposed to be. Heisler now is the “Premier” village with what amounts to a scrap metal yard at the main intersection of the village. The latest is that the owner of said “industrial” property has been issued a “discretionary” permit to occupy the land for it’s present use, a welding, fabricating, manufacturing business. I happen to be the “most affected” by this miscarriage of administration by an obviously biased council. I now have 14 days to appeal this “ development” permit...it is my right apparently. However there is a catch....money. I am

CORONATION/STETTLER, AB

a pensioner with very little spare cash to spread around, but in the government’s wisdom, in order to start the appeal, I must put up a $300 fee. In other words, it is not a right to appeal, it is the right of someone with money, to appeal. Now you may appreciate the fact that three factors that were supposed to protect me from the noise, visual polution and loss of property value along with my quality of life ( reasonable peace and quiet), have already failed to do their proper job. It is now down to me being required to pay for something that right-

MAY 28'15

fully should never have occurred. Since I am unable to finance the appeal, which I may lose anyway, I can look forward to constant, continuous noise which of course, makes life here rather unpleasant. There are times the noise is so intense I have to close my windows to try and block it. This kind of operation does not belong in the middle of the village and especially 50 feet from residential property. Welcome to Heisler....the Premier village....ha!!!! Ben Doolaege and Jillian Schaffner gave the welcoming speech to the 2015 graduating class of Gus Wetter School and their guests at Prom ceremonies at the school on May 23. In the speech the pair welcomed those in attendance and said that it had taken the group 12 years and three different schools coming together to reach graduating. “After surviving three years of Mr. Faber’s many family stories, Ms. T’s 12 minute runs, Mr. Muhlbeier’s mounds of homework, and Mrs. Coupland’s utter enjoyment of quizzes, we have finally reached the end,” said Doolaege. Jacey Gamroth and Clinton Schulmeister gave the farewell speech where they thanked their parents calling them the most influential aspects of their lives, who had done so much for them. “We appreciate all the hard work and dedication you have put into us from being our first teachers to ensuring we do our homework every night through

grade school. Taking us to countless practices and being our loudest fans at every home game. All of your involvement in our lives has shaped us to the bright students you see upon this stage,” the pair said. They went on to thank their teachers, who had guided them through 13 years from kindergarten to grade 12 and said that the students appreciated the teachers commitment to the students futures. Lastly they thanked the communities of Castor, Halkirk and Alliance for “raising us up in a safe and welcoming place we will remember forever. Without your gracious support this prom would not have been possible.” They went on to speak about each student in turn, including memories that either Gamroth or Schulmeister had of the student. The guest speaker Madam Justice Charlene Anderson graduated Gus Wetter in 1979 and spoke to the students about the many and varied jobs she had. “If you don’t know what you want to do, that is okay,” she said, “but continue on in your

education. Take broad and diverse classes and it will take you where you want to be.” She encouraged the students to stay passionate about what they studied and to give back to the community they came from, and those in need. “Make your mind a nice place to spend your spare time,” was her ending advice to the class. A slide presentation was shown which had a variety of photographs of each student from a young age and helped to tell the story of who they were. Ben Doolaege and Jillian Schaffner ended the speeches portion of the night by thanking everyone who was involved in making the night happen and the guest speaker, Charlene Anderson. “And last but not least, we thank our parents for everything they have done for us and for helping us every step of the way. We hope everyone here has a great night, so thank you for joining us this evening,” Doolaege said. The grand march and dance preceded the speeches.

Back for another season

by Jennifer Schetzsle The East Central Bulls are back at it for another season. This year brings a couple of exciting changes. We decided to make the jump to AAA marking the first ever AAA team based in our area. We have an exciting new addition to the coaching staff, Ian Chevalier. Ian, originally from Canmore, attended Prairie Baseball Academy last year in Lethbridge and previously spent three years in the Badlands program in Oyen. Ian brings a fresh, energetic approach to the team and has already brought great value as the Bulls record sits at seven and four, including a silver medal at the Earlybird tournament in St. Albert. Brendan Logan (Oyen) one of the Bulls starting pitchers and middle infielder, son of Cal and Tracy Logan. Gavin Logan (Oyen) is the Bulls starting catcher and will

be relied upon to pitch as well. He is the son of Barry and Erin Logan. Carver Zimmer( Coronation) plays middle infield and is also a pitcher. Carver is son of Tim Zimmer and Dana Shaw. Hayden Schetzsle (Veteran) plays the corner infield positions along with pitching. He is son of Graham and Jen Schetzsle. Brandon Buxton (Amisk) plays centerfield and is a staring pitcher. He is the son of Jason and Jodi Buxton.

Second season players

Teryll Sherman (Forestburg) plays the corner infield positions and is also capable of playing in the outfield. He is the son of Fitz and Pam Sherman. Nicholas Brigley (Coronation) plays a solid left field defense. Parents are Dale and Brenda Brigley. Robbie Gilbertson (Coronation) pulls double duty

as a catcher along with second base. His parents are Shane and Angie Gilbertson.

Four new boys

Eric Johnstone (Veteran) plays second and third base and may see some time in the outfield. Eric is son of Randy and Debbie Johnstone. Jarek Sopracolle (Consort) plays right field and is showing promise as a pitcher. Jarek is the son of Dave and Roxanne Sopracolle. Mason Love-Hollman (Penhold) plays second base and outfield along with some pitching. He is the son to Terry Hollman and Lisa Love-Hollman. Weston Graumann (Hanna) recently returning to baseball Weston is an outfielder excited to be back in the game. He is the son of Wyatt & Randene Graumann.

Upcoming games

The East Central Bulls will

be hosting four weekends in Veteran. There will be a booth on site and admission is free. There will be 50/50 draws daily. We would love to see you there. South Jasper Place, coached by Saad Samuel, comes to Veteran for three games, May 30 and 31 at 3 pm and 6 pm and Sunday at 11 am. Okotoks Dawgs Red June 6 and 7 at 2 pm and 5 pm and Sunday at 11am. Okotoks Dawgs Black June 20 and 21 at 2 pm and 5 pm and Sunday at 11 am. Edmonton Cardinals July 25 and 26 at 2 pm and 5 pm and Sunday at 11 am. Carey Price, the ‘Hart’ of the Habs Price has ties to Veteran, Alberta

by Bruce Penton The last National Hockey League goaltender to win the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player was a Montreal Canadien — Jose Theodore in 2001-02. It was regarded as somewhat of a fluke, one of those lightning-in-a-bottle years, and within four years, Theodore was no longer a Hab. The next Canadien to win a Hart Trophy will be Carey Price, who — regardless of whether he wins the Stanley Cup or loses in the second Penton round of playoffs to Tampa Bay — will nonetheless be announced as the NHL’s Most Valuable Player when the glitzy awards night is held in Las Vegas June 24. This one is no fluke. Barring serious injury or getting caught in a compromising setting with the daughter of the

SPORT Shorts

team president, Price will most likely be a Canadien until he retires, and his Hall of Fame bust will be proudly outfitted with the Bleu, Blanc et Rouge. The Canadiens had a remarkable season, racking up 109 points to finish second overall in the Eastern Conference. Why? Because Price was right — night after night. The Habs had trouble scoring — their 221 goals tied Pittsburgh for fewest among the 16 playoff teams — so night after night they depended on the acrobatic goaltending heroics of Price, the B.C. boy, with ties to Veteran, Ab. where his late grandparents, Eugene (Joe) and Ruth Price lived. Price, who suffered through a couple of lean early years with the Habs after being a first-round draft pick but is unquestionably the NHL’s best at his position today. The 109 points Montreal garnered this year was their highest since 1988-89.

Price’s 44 wins were the most in the league. He had a spectacular 1.96 goalsagainst average and his save percentage was .933. To lead the league in all three of those categories is remarkable; it’s the first time a goalie has accomplished that trifecta in 25 years (Ed Belfour in 1990-91). Back in 2010, the big question in Montreal was Jaroslav Halak or Carey Price? Halak was the playoff hero for the Habs that year as they won two playoff rounds but in the off-season, the Habs in a controversial move kept Price and sent Halak to St. Louis, sending some Montreal fans into a frenzy of criticism and heaping untold pressure on young Price’s shoulders. Turns out it was a great decision. As Montreal’s undisputed No. 1, Price quickly established himself as a dominant goaltender. “I played too fast.” “My shoulders weren’t in the right position.” “My feet were too close to the ball.” “I wasn’t standing properly, but I hit the ball anyway.” These types of comments are often heard on golf courses. Missing a shot only takes a moment of distraction or not being in just the right position. Technique plays an important role, of course, but golf also involves concentration and strength of mind. The proof? It’s estimated that golfers spend, on average, 90 per cent of their time on the golf course thinking and 10 per cent swinging and hitting the ball. It’s a good illustration of the importance of making the right decisions. In other words, the right balance between discipline, movement control and psychology will help you enjoy the game more and improve your score. You also have to learn to control your emotions. It’s often said that a golfer’s behaviour is a reflection of his or her personality. Your main aim should be to play for yourself, to give yourself a challenge. So much the better if you achieve your other goals as well. You missed your shot because you looked up or because your swing was too short? Just forget about it;

National hotel lots sold to local businessman The lots formerly known as the National Hotel property in Hanna has been sold to Dr. David Warwick Professional Corporation as of May 21. “We are very excited to build a facility that will enable us to more efficiently look after the dental needs of the people of East Central Alberta” said Dr. David Warwick, DDS. Dr. Warwick plans to construct a 5000 sq. foot professional dental facility which will include a full dental laboratory. The new space will allow for increased research activity with a focus on the impact of dental health on general health. Planning and construction will begin immediately with plans to open the dental facility in the summer of 2016. “It’s great to see new development in the downtown. This new development will bring additional traffic to the downtown core and it is anticipated the existing downtown businesses should benefit from the increased traffic,” stated Hanna Mayor Chris Warwick. Dr. David Warwick has been in business in Hanna for 34 years.

Sports news

Courtney Beebe and Quinton MacMillan have advanced to Zones for Senior track in Red Deer on May 27 in hopes of qualifying for the Provincial Senior Track Meet in Lethbridge the following week.

At Areas on May 20 Quinton won his javelin event with a throw of 43.30 meter which was nine meter ahead of his competition. Courtney finished second in Javelin with a throw of 28.50 meter which is still not her best, but was only beat by 29 cm. In shot put, Courtney qualified again with a throw of 9.40 meter and that was good enough for second place.

In appreciation

Nearly $1000 was raised in the 30-Hour Famine at HPS with proceeds going to World Vision. Trina Campbell and Dianne Southoff shared their expertise on dough making in junior high option class. These ladies brought bread dough in ready to teach students how to form buns. Then students learned how to make the dough. Everyone enjoyed a delicious hot bun and the rest were frozen to use in the upcoming school hot lunch program.
